Academic Improvement Center Best Tutoring Service

By Enterprise staff For the fourth year in a row, the Academic Improvement Center, aka “Mike and Terri’s,” got top marks from Davis Enterprise readers for Best Tutoring.

Mike and Terri Leonard arrived in Davis in 1994. Mike left his job as a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and Terri left law school at UC Berkeley to attend medical school at UC Davis. Mike was working in geophysical consulting in the Sacramento area, and originally opened the tutoring business as a part-time job in 1997, while Terri was finishing her last two years of

Terri graduated near the top of her class, but

then both Mike and Terri had second thoughts about the

lifestyle being a doctor would demand. Mike’s tutoring business was

booming, so Terri joined in 1999, and they’ve been working together ever since.

Davis Farmers Market Best Place to Take an Out-of-Towner

By Enterprise staff For 42 years, the Davis Farmers Market has been a community gathering place for farm-fresh, feel-good food and familyfriendly fun. No wonder it’s routinely named Yolo County’s “Best Place to Take an Outof-Towner.”

The market, at 301 C St. in Central Park, draws locals and

tourists alike. Since 1976, it’s been a model for the more than 700 farmers markets in California and more than 7,000 across the country. Today, it serves 7,000 to 10,000 people a week.

Market hours are Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday afternoons (3 to 6 p.m. in fall and winter and 4:30 p.m. to

sunset in spring and summer). Open yearround, rain or shine, the market offers an array of fruits and vegetables, including certified organic produce, meats, chicken, seafood, wine, local eggs and honey, fresh-baked goods, flowers, plants and gifts.

Everything sold in the market is either grown by or made by the seller. More than 70 percent of vendors come from a one-hour radius of Davis.

During daylight saving time, the Wednesday market transforms into Picnic in the Park, open from 4:30 p.m. to sunset. The event adds a wide range of hot food vendors, local beer and wine from Soroptimist

Within a few months, the self-taught baker was earning a profit at his tiny shop near the Amtrak station, and many an Amtrak traveler was beginning the train trip with a sticky bun, scone or large slice of pizza from Village Bakery.

For Bobby Coyote, Dos Coyotes Border Cafe is the result of his love of Santa Fe, N.M., and his Los Angeles childhood.

Coyote grew up eating the most authentic Mexican food, then started cooking his own. He later moved to Santa Fe and connected with chefs who created fusions and hybrids that defined Southwestern cuisine.

After a stint touring with the band War — itself a musical fusion of funk, soul, jazz and rock — he focused on creating a Southwestern-themed restaurant with an equally energetic atmosphere, a location yet to come.

While Bobby was working to advance his culinary knowledge, his sister was enrolled at

The first Dos Coyotes, in The Marketplace shopping center, served delicious food in an engaging atmosphere that the typical college student

“People would be surprised how much fresh produce that we go through — it’s astronomical!” Coyote said, considering all the salsas and salads on the menu.

Dos Coyotes has been voted Best Burrito in the Readers’ Choice survey.

“We’re excited, even after being in business for 27 years,” Coyote said. “We totally appreciate them coming out!”

Coyote has been busy over the past quartercentury. Ten restaurants have opened in five neighboring counties, with another one opening in Citrus Heights in May.

By Enterprise staff For the second year in a row, participants in the Reader’s Choice survey has singled out Wok of Flame as Best Chinese Food.

Wok of Flame opened its doors in September 2006. It was a family business, and soon word spread that there was a really good Chinese restaurant in the El Macero shopping center.

The business has grown over the past 18 years, and now Wok of Flame has more than 20 full- and part-time employees, and often draw a full house of hungry customers for lunch and dinner. The

longtime residents, students, and travelers passing through on Interstate 80 and

looking for a tasty meal.

The menu includes an array of over 40

lunch specials to choose from, and the main entree can be accompanied by side dishes including pork fried rice, vegetable chow mein, steamed vegetables, and steamed white or brown rice.

The dining menu includes Hunan, Mandarin and Szechuanstyle offerings, including tempting appetizers, nine different soups and a variety of noodle dishes, as well as a choice of entrees with pork, chicken, beef, seafood or vegetarian.

Konditorei Austrian Pastry Best Dessert

By Enterprise staff Local lovers of Viennese-style pastries celebrated when Konditorei Austrian Pastry Café opened in 1990 — and quickly became a popular local destination.

Located for the past decade at 2710 Fifth St., owners Albert and Gloria Kutternig invite customers to enjoy indoor and patio dining, with ample parking on the property.

Konditorei is dedicated to bringing the tradition and elegance of the “old” style — reflecting the influence of Austria and neighboring European countries — together with the “new” Vienna culinary art of sugar baking.

Kutternig has a master’s degree in sugar baking, which he completed in Vienna in 1981. He has worked internationally for the Hilton Hotel, Intercontinental Hotels and the renowned Kur Kafe Konditorei Oberlaa and the Rosenberger Hotels and Restaurants in Vienna.

“We’re so happy that folks continue to enjoy our delicious organic salad bar, crazy crafty beer selection and our magnificent cheese counter.

The Davis Food Co-op was established

in 1972, and purchased its current home in 1990. The parking lot was re-graded last fall, and the Co-op just added a new shopping cart “corral.”

And we started this year off right by switching out our coffee cups and soup containers to commercially compostable goods made of 100-percent renewable resources.

“Our ice cream is hand-made in small batches from the finest all-natural ingredients, emphasizing local and organic sources,” said The Good Scoop coowner Stephen Layton.

Stephen and his sister Marnie sold their first scoop of ice cream in Davis on Feb. 27, 2016. The brotherand-sister team, both Davis residents, love ice cream, Stephen said, and wanted to fill the gap they thought was

“All our ice creams are made at our shop in downtown Davis, 1.5 gallons at a time,” Stephen said, “and all of our dairy products come directly from

Straus Organic Dairy.

We believe in making ice cream with the best possible ingredients available; we don’t use artificial flavors or colors.”

But The Good Scoop will not rest on its laurels.

“We are constantly brainstorming fun and creative flavors to make,” Stephen said.

“We are always working in our test kitchen experimenting with spices, herbs and local fruits.”

The Laytons also continue building relationships with local farmers and businesses to help The Good Scoop keep improving.

Kathmandu Kitchen Best Indian Food

BY BOB SCHULTZ Special to The Enterprise Kathmandu Kitchen opened in Davis in 2006, and by 2008 Sukhjeevan Singh began working there and then took over ownership of the restaurant. Sukhjeevan’s longtime friend from San Francisco, Pavitter Singh, joined the business in 2010 and by 2011 the two had become co-owners.

Each partner has a specialty within the business. Sukhjeevan oversees the kitchen to maintain the quality and authenticity of the Northern Indian, Nepali and Himalayan dishes that are served.

The food is traditionally spicy, but milder versions are available for many dishes.

Davis students and residents, making the trek to Woodland for authentic tacos and burritos, suggested that owner Rigo Hernandez open a location in Davis. He listened, and it was so successful that there are now two locations in Davis.

Morgan’s on Main Best Woodland Restaurant

By Enterprise staff When heading out of town, readers of The Davis Enterprise selected Morgan’s on Main, as the Best Woodland Restaurant.

After opening her first restaurant — Maria’s Cantina — owner Kellie Morgan knew she eventually wanted to open two more in Woodland.

She’s been a resident for 30 years and after seeing the growth and change of downtown knew in 2015 that it was time to add the second piece — Morgan’s on Main.

Her son opened Morgan’s Mill (Coffee, beer and wine) in May of last year. There will be one final piece to the restaurant group Yolo Eats, later this year.

Zia’s Delicatessen Best Sandwich

By Enterprise staff Anne Marie and Kevin Crilly opened Zia’s Delicatessen in Davis in 1995, after relocating to Davis from the Bay Area. The San Francisco natives missed their neighborhood deli.

Anne Marie’s father and grandfather both had their own butcher shops in San Francisco.

Anne Marie was accustomed to being behind a meat counter where you might say she grew up.

The Crilly children also have grown up behind the meat and cheese counter at Zia’s.

Sophia’s Thai Kitchen Best Thai Food

BY BOB SCHULTZ Special to The Enterprise Sophia Patterson and her husband Guido started out as the kitchen at the Paragon Grill where Froggy’s/ Tommy J’s Grill now stands. They moved to the current location and opened as Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, Davis’ first Thai restaurant, in 1996.

In 1999, Sophia partnered with Gordon Langstaff and Kevin Wan joined the partnership in 2001, when the business expanded and added a bar. By 2004, Sophia had departed, leaving Gordon and Kevin as the co-owners of her namesake business.

Razor’s Edge Best Barber Shop

Razor’s Edge Barber Shop has won the Readers’ Choice award for four years in a row, and owner Sukh Banwait has worked hard to keep his shop No. 1.

Banwait runs Razor’s Edge by himself, six days a week, never leaving the shop at all most days. He’s had only a week of vacation in nearly four years.

But there’s no place he’d rather be.

Owner and movement enthusiast Laura Cotler opened her Second Street studio — then called The Pilates Studio of Davis — in March 2003 to offer post-rehab Pilates, specializing in clients with chronic pain or who have been released from physical therapy after surgery. The House Dresser Best Antique Store

By Enterprise staff Owner Anita Long opened her first Woodland antique store a quarter-century ago and the secret of her success was made clear by a recent first-time customer who said simply, “You make us feel so welcome.”

Anita loves how the Woodland antique stores support each other and she tries to make everyone who comes in to The House Dresser feel like family.

She knows many of her regulars by name and some just stop in to talk about what’s happening with the people in their lives.

read. Anita stresses using and displaying antiques so that they don’t collect dust in storage. She loves to

show people how to blend one or two sentimental favorites from their collection, or hers, with new items to keep

She’s most proud of being able to share the community’s history through classic furniture, quality-made housewares, china and glassware from the USA and old Europe that she showcases and sells in her 1893 building.

Lexington Apartments Best Apartment Community

By Enterprise staff For the Lexington Apartments on Olive Drive, being voted Yolo County’s best apartment community has become something of an annual tradition.

This is the fourth year in a row that Davis Enterprise readers have bestowed that title upon “The Lex,” whose amenities and proximity to UC Davis and downtown make it a sought-after place to call home.

“It’s easy to be great when you have great residents,” property manager Kazia Hart said. “There is nothing more rewarding than making a difference in people’s lives, and you get to do that in a real way when you work in housing.”

Residents also hail the customer service at The Lex, where the maintenance and management team has helped residents with math homework, fixed bikes, jump-started cars and given students rides to school when they’re hurt.

“If we can help you, we will,” Hart said.

And then there are the nachos. On Fridays during the school year, The Lexington offers a build-your-own nacho bar with all the fixings: chili, shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream, jalapeños, guacamole and nacho cheese, of course.

The management also feeds residents all week during finals.

Future plans include a pool tournament in March and a resident art show in the spring.

Holland, the company’s marketing director, chuckled as he recalled when one man entered the store, took his place on a mattress and slept for about 20 to 25 minutes.

He didn’t wake up in the best mood, proclaiming, “ ‘This mattress is no good.’ I just let him walk away and find his way out of the store,” Holland said.

Had the customer stayed longer, he would have learned that the familyowned company, which has its own staff of delivery drivers, offers a 120-day comfort guarantee. Holland said he gets very few returns after the

four months are up.

“We ask that they give it at least 30 days to break it in,” he said.

Most Matthews Mattress shoppers say comfort is their top necessity. The company believes a good deal is the icing on the cake. Free delivery and removal of the old mattress are included in the price. Financing is available.

The National Sleep Council suggested getting a new mattress about every eight years, Holland said.

He said good ones will last eight to 10 years.

Jeff Likes — who has co-owned Jeff Likes Clean Windows & Gutters with his wife Meaghan for nearly 10 years — describes his window washers and gutter cleaners as trained ninjas, likening what they do to martial arts.

Over the years, a variety of family members have worked as ninjas, including a brother, aunt, uncle and family friends. Jeff can often be found driving around town with their mascot (and beloved dog), Ollie.

Lea Rosenberg Most Effective Volunteer

BY TANYA PEREZ Enterprise staff writer Interests come and go; we all move on to try new experiences.

However, Davis resident Lea Rosenberg is persistent in her devotion to give back to her local community, and has been voted “Most Effective Volunteer” by Enterprise readers.

Rosenberg’s career with community service and volunteering started with the March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies.

“I involved myself in it almost immediately ... I became an area captain, and that’s how it all began,” Rosenberg said.

A tireless commitment to service organizations around Davis has earned Lea Rosenberg the title of “Most Effective Volunteer.”

After her son started elementary school, Rosenberg became part of the PTA board, eventually moving up to be president. She then became interested in various local volunteer organizations, such as Soroptimist

International of Davis, Davis Odd Fellows and SPCA. “All the volunteer organizations I participated in had involvements in the community,” Rosenberg said, adding, “I pass items from thrift

stores to nonprofits I know so it benefits someone somewhere.”

Rosenberg joined the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge in 2004, and has been an active member since.

One of her most memorable moments

during her Odd Fellows service is Breakfast with Santa, Rosenberg says. “We got our Santa all arranged and decorated the halls ... that was really nice.”

Even better, the money earned from this annual event goes back to the community for foster kids or children in crisis.

In addition, Rosenberg has participated in more direct means of community service, including projects such as the highway cleanup between County Roads 27 and 29 north of Davis that required weeks of training.

Despite her busy schedule, Rosenberg doesn't view these projects as difficulties or hardships.

Collins graduated in 2009 from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, focusing on small animal medicine with special interests in emergency medicine, oncology and surgery. He later worked at a large regional specialty veterinary practice, but a desire to work with a smaller team and build relationships with his clients took him to SDVC on Cowell Boulevard in August 2012.

The clinic was opened as a threedoctor practice and was purchased 10 years later by Dr. Cliff Gravem, who had been a Midtown technician while in veterinary school.

Pence Gallery Best Art Gallery

By Enterprise staff Back in 1975, a group of Davis residents, professors and artists began displaying art in the former dental office of Dr. Joe Pence on D Street.

Three decades later, the old building was demolished to make way for a spacious new facility with two gallery spaces and an educational space, designed

by San Francisco architects Barcelon & Jang.

The Pence offers art exhibits, supports the development of local artists and provides educational programs to visitors of all ages.

And for six years running, the Pence has been named Yolo County’s best art gallery.

By Enterprise staff Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board at 650 G St. has long been known for its friendly local experts in outdoor sports, using the tag line “We’re Serious About Your Fun!” The shop has a long history in Davis, starting with staff, equipment and clients from two older Davis businesses: Ski Racquet (since 1974) and Bike Surgeons (since 1980).

Ken’s Bike & Ski brought these together in 1988, and “we continue to grow,” owner Ken Bradford says, “with major expansions in 1997-98 and 200405” and an updated name in 2011-12 to reflect the rise of snowboarding.

Knickerbocker founded The Avid Reader in downtown Davis in 1987. She bought an existing store, Orphesus, and developed it into a general independent bookstore, locally based. She also owns and operates another downtown storefront — Avid Reader Active — a toy, game and card store she opened in 2012.

The owner and staff live in town, and they closely monitored the trends of what books Davis residents want, picking titles that they know will be of interest to their patrons in Davis and the region.

For 31 years, The Avid Reader has been a popular bookstore in downtown Davis, reflecting the tastes and interests of the local community.

“We respect our customers, and share our book knowledge with them,” owner Alzada Knickerbocker said.

By Enterprise staff Diego Rodriguez and Jose Lopez know a little something about being voted best jewelry shop.

Both are former employees of De Luna Jewelers, itself a winner of The Davis Enterprise’s Best of Yolo County contest before the Second Street business closed its doors in 2016 after 48 years in business.

Rodriguez and Lopez branched out from there, opening Lu’Ro Jewelers on Fifth Street later that year with a small inventory and big plans.
