Enterprise staff Crushed headlights and dented doors are a story of the past for customers of A-1 Body Shop, Davis’ top auto body shop as voted by Davis Enterprise readers.

The shop was started by the Cross family in 1967. Brian and Dee Cross ran it until selling it to Brian von Tress in 2020, who owns several other body shops in Northern California.

“When we met with the Crosses we felt that A-1 Body Shop met all the same goals as the rest of the Collision Pros family,” von Tress said. “Like the Crosses, Collision Pros believes they are there to serve the community and focus on the best possible repair, but also in a way that makes the process as simple as possible.”

Academic Improvement Center Best Tutoring Center Enterprise staff For the seventh year in a row, the Academic Improvement Center, a.k.a. “Mike and Terri’s,” got top marks from Davis Enterprise readers for Best Tutoring.

Mike Leonard, Ph.D., and Terri Leonard, M.D., — who originally met each other in the teacher credential program at UC Berkeley — arrived in Davis in 1994, after Mike left his job as a geophysicist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and Terri left law school at UC Berkeley to attend medical school at UC Davis.

Mike was working in geophysical consulting in the Sacramento area and originally opened the tutoring business as a part-time job in 1997 while Terri was finishing her last two years of medical

The Odd Fellows Hall, located in the heart of charming Downtown Davis, is available for receptions, fundraisers, dinners, conferences, trade shows, meetings, weddings and more.

Davis’ best event venue has actually been around for longer than the city itself! The Davis Odd Fellows organization was established in 1870, and the city was chartered in 1917. Enterprise staff Since 1976, the Davis Farmers Market has been a community gathering place for farm-fresh, feel-good food and family-friendly fun.

The market, at 301 C St. in

Central Park, draws locals and tourists alike. It’s a model for the more than 700 farmers markets in California and more than 7,000 across the country. Today, it serves 7,000 to 10,000 people a week.

Market hours are Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday afternoons (3 to 6 p.m. in fall and winter, and 4:30 p.m. to sunset in spring and summer). Konditorei Austrian Pastry Café Best Bakery, Best Dessert FOOD & DRINK

Enterprise staff Local lovers of pastries celebrated when Konditorei Austrian Pastry Café opened in 1990. The Viennese-style café quickly became a popular local destination.

Located at 2710 Fifth St., owners Albert and Gloria Kutternig invite customers to enjoy indoor and patio dining, with ample parking on the property.

Albert Kutternig, a native of Austria, and Gloria Kutternig, a native of the Philippines, met in Caracas, Venezuela, when Gloria was the principal dancer for the renowned Ballet Nuevo Mundo de Caracas and Albert was chef pattisier at the Caracas Hilton. Married in Vienna in 1986, they emigrated to the U.S. in 1990.

Enterprise staff Taqueria Guadalajara started with a small restaurant in Woodland in 1991. Davis students and residents, making the trek to Woodland for authentic tacos and burritos, suggested that owner Rigo Hernandez open a location in Davis. He listened, and it was so successful that there are now two locations in Davis.

Special to The Enterprise Many of the diners who voted Wok of Flame its fifth consecutive Best Chinese Food award probably didn’t even notice the change of ownership in 2019. Vivien Zheng and her brother Jay Lin came to Davis looking for a thriving Chinese restaurant to continue successfully rather than one in need of rescue found it in the El Macero shopping center.

After some formulation experimentation, each week two flavors are placed head-to-head so customers can sample and vote for their most preferred.

Special to The Enterprise Sukhjeevan Singh took over ownership of Kathmandu Kitchen in 2008 and brought in his longtime friend from San Francisco, Pavitter Singh in 2010. By 2011 the two had become co-owners and had started a string of ten years in a row of being selected as Best Indian Food in Yolo County.

After establishing a successful parlor in Sacramento back in 1982, Jim Matthews and Linda Prato partnered with Tim and Marilyn Brophy to bring Lamppost Pizza to Davis in 1994.

Since that time, they expanded the dining room, added a patio, extended the menu and added a fine selection of craft beers. Tim passed away in 2001 and Marilyn retired in 2010.

Jim and Linda still own Lamppost but Davis natives Mike Bryner and Janet Bernauer are the

That’s been his focus since 2003, when he opened the Italian eatery Osteria Fasulo in Village Homes. Eighteen years later, readers of The Davis Enterprise named it their top choice for romantic dining in the community.

“Our cuisine is traditional but also innovative,” Fasulo said. “We always think of a new dish to please the palate of our guests.”

Sophia’s Thai Kitchen Best Thai Food

Special to The Enterprise Once again, locals agree; Sophia’s Thai Kitchen is the top Thai food in Davis.

Sophia Patterson and her husband Guido started out running the kitchen at the Paragon Grill, where Froggy’s now stands. They moved to the current location (the site of a former Moroccan eatery) and opened as Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, Davis’ first Thai restaurant, in 1996.

In 1999, Sophia partnered with Gordon Langstaff and Kevin Wan joined the partnership in 2001, when the business expanded and added a bar. By 2004, Sophia had departed, leaving Gordon and Kevin as the co-owners of her namesake business.

When asked what makes Sophia’s unique now that there

are several local Thai restaurants, Wan said, “A neighborhood vibe. A coffee shop vibe.

We aren’t just an eating and drinking place. We are a place for people to drop by, gather and run into friends.”

The owners also contribute to the community through fundraisers for different UCD programs, donations to school auctions and sports organizations and support for the SPCA. They are especially proud to donate to UCD graduate school programs and to the law school.

Wan and Langstaff also want to say, “2020 was a challenging year, but we were blown away by the community support. We thank each and every person who came out, dined in the cold, and picked up a takeout order. Our lights have stayed on because of you!”

“People walk in almost daily having never heard of something quite as silly as a water store,” says owner Paul Taylor, who operates the 878-squarefoot business with his wife Barbara in the Oak Tree Plaza shopping center.

But what you see is what you get — water, and lots of it.

There’s distilled, reverse osmosis and alkaline varieties, available for delivery or purchase on-site.

Our machines are set, calibrated, tested and tinkered with daily for maximum efficiency,” Taylor says. “We are in a state of constant improvement, and the results really do speak for themselves.”

Marlaina Schroeder Spivey founded the company in 2009 on the principle “that if a young person wants to participate and work hard, there’s a place for them at MIDC.” “We offer competitive dance styles for all ages and we do not believe in tryouts,” the company says.

Over the years, Mirror Image grew from a group of 20 dancers renting local space to 80 dancers in its own studio at 2121 Second St. For six years in a row, the company has been invited to compete at both Nationals and Worlds.

Massage Envy Best Massage Caleb Hampton

Enterprise staff writer In 2012, Stephanie Bautista began working at the front desk at Massage Envy, a nationwide chain that opened a clinic five years earlier at the Marketplace in North Davis.

She grew into a management position and eventually, in 2017, she purchased the Davis clinic, which is now located on 110 F St. in Downtown Davis.

That kind of loyalty and the close-knit community of its 30-plus employees is part of what makes it so popular, Bautista told The Enterprise.

“For the past 14 years, Massage Envy has been able to consistently serve the people of this wonderful community,” she said. “Some of our members have been with us since inception.”

When it first opened in

Davis, Massage Envy offered massages and four different facial services. Since then, it has added assisted stretch sessions, facial waxing and advanced skin care treatments such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion infusion.

The reason Bautista purchased the branch, she said, was because she “fully believes in the physical and mental benefits Massage Envy, and the employees, are able to provide the members,” she said.

Out of more than a thousand Massage Envy locations nationwide, the Davis location has repeatedly been the topranked clinic in member retention and satisfaction.

That’s thanks to people like Natalie Solorio, the lead massage therapist who has been with Massage Envy in Davis since it opened in 2007. Solorio now trains all the massage

Enterprise staff writer Every year, the Yolo Food Bank (YFB) coordinates the collection and storage of more than six million pounds of food, serving the nutrition needs of over 45,000 Yolo County residents each month.

During the pandemic, demand for food assistance increased 60% and the YFB has adapted and expanded to meet the need.

One of the people responsible for the food bank’s preparedness for the pandemic is Jodie Liederman, a long-time Davis resident and community leader.

Since moving to Davis in 2002, Liederman founded the Davis Parent University lecture series, featuring presentations on parent education and childrearing, as well

“It was so easy [to raise funds] because the food bank plays such an important role in the community,” Liederman said. According to recent estimates, roughly 32% of Yolo County adults live in a food insecure household, more than double the state and national average.

In March 2019, a year after Liederman began fundraising, the YFB moved into its new Costco-sized facility, with state-of-the-art refrigerators the size of condominiums, expanding its storage capacity and its ability to serve the community.

A year later, when the coronavirus pandemic hit local residents financially and caused the need for nutrition assistance to nearly double, the food bank was able to rise to the occasion. “It was miraculous that we had moved to

our new facility,” Liederman said. “We had capacity to care for thousands more people. I don’t know how the food bank ever would have been able to handle this if we didn’t have the new space.”

Liederman finished her donor relations role at the YFB last year, but she continues to advocate for the food bank and serve as an unofficial ambassador, she said.

Nowadays, she is using her fundraising skills to help expand EMERGE, a local center for social and emotional learning that caters to the needs of young people, another community resource, Liederman said, that the pandemic has made all the more vital.

“I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with incredibly amazing people,” she said.

“Together, we all thrive.”

Grace Valley Christian Center was founded in 1974 by the Rev. P.G. Mathew and started as a small and poor group of students. Almost 50 years later, it is a growing and prospering community with 24-acres, a school, and several hundred members, voted “best church” by Enterprise readers.

“We are a covenant community of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ,” according to associate pastor Greg Broderick. “We are committed to preaching the Gospel as found in the Holy Scriptures,”which are the very word of God, and living for God by His grace.”

Despite its growth from a small band to a large Church, it remain a close community dedicated to serving God and one another in covenant love.

The congregation fellowships with one another so that they know each other’s needs and can help one another to serve.

Through the pandemic, the church has been faithfully meeting outdoors since May, even in inclement weather. They look forward to continue to grow in numbers “and in Grace” in 2021.

“We are serious about preaching the Word of God and living it out,” Broderick said.

Despite the unpredictable circumstances of the past year, Regan went above and beyond to continue earning the community’s trust.

Professional training is a constant commitment for the staff. Doctors have completed programs in dentistry, physical rehabilitation, stem cell therapy and ultrasound. “We employ a high number of registered veterinary technicians to care for people’s pets,” Bradley said. “Fourteen of our 32 staff have this additional training and certification and three others have completed the training program. Two of our veterinarians have completed fellowships at UC Davis in ultrasound and clinical pathology.”

The Pence Gallery Association was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1976 after a year of exhibiting art by both local and regional artists. For years, the Pence served the community through exhibiting art, history, and anthropological subjects of importance.

Through its Bach lunch program and Garden Tour events, the Pence served to unite the community through direct experience in art, music, and history.

Fast-forward four decades, the Pence has grown in leaps and bounds to serve the community even better. This is the ninth year the Pence has been named Yolo County’s best art gallery.

“With the advent of a new facility in 2005, the Pence has grown to host over 400 artists’

Many members of the public might be surprised by how many different events the Pence hosted, pre-COVID — from birthday parties and yoga to theater and poetry readings. It also has live music frequently during its art receptions. Now it is doing video tours of exhibits and virtual talks and art classes via Zoom. Nelson hopes to continue this, and to add more offerings for kids.

Both the bookstore and the sister toy store on the same block, Avid & Co., went from a purely brick and mortar establishment to a robust online

store presence, while continuing to answer phones and provide the people of Yolo County with every book they desired.

Staff began delivering books

directly to doorsteps of Davis residents who were unable to leave their homes. Avid reports a depth of gratitude for their local community that surpasses these present times and spans three decades of loyalty.

The Avid Reader has supported the community through donations to and ticket sales for local fundraisers. Additionally, they are excited to restart their robust in-person event schedule when limitations for indoor gatherings are lifted.

Over the years, The Avid Reader has won top awards from The Davis Enterprise’ annual Best of Yolo County competition. This year is no exception as it garnered the awards for Best Bookstore, Best Independent Retailer, Best Place to Buy a Gift, and Best Independent Store for Kids.

Yolo County SPCA Thrift Store Best Consignment / Thrift Store Enterprise staff The Yolo County SPCA Thrift store started in a small store on Third Street. It has expanded into two stores — the main store, and a furniture store two doors down. It is also now able to sell on many online sites and work with outside apps such as Nytch.

The purpose of the Yolo County SPCA Thrift Store is to increase awareness and raise money to help fund animal-rescue programs and services. A large portion of funding to care for fostered animals is supplied by profits made at the Yolo County SPCA Thrift Store.

The store carries many brand name items and have a specific rack just for UC Davis swag. They also receive donations that have the original tags. It offers sales to the

Newsbeat Best Independent Retailer Enterprise staff Since opening as a small kiosk at University Mall in 1986, Newsbeat has moved three times. Now at 514 Third St., the business is one of the only true brick and mortar newsstands left in Davis.

“The eclectic nature of our store is based on the almost extinct model of a newsagent,” said Janis Lott, who bought the store in 1989 with her husband Terrence Lott.

A newsstand and convenience store, Newsbeat offers a wide selection of daily newspapers, magazines, periodicals, books, greeting cards, stationary, tobacco, beverages, snacks, candy, toys, games and puzzles.

It’s a business model that has been in existence for a century and a half, according to Lott. However, with the

advent of the internet — and its impact on how the public consumes the news — Newsbeat has had to adapt. It has done so by creating an atmosphere that continues to draw customers.

“Our goal is to provide these items and create a place of belonging and an ambiance where all people can feel comfortable and convivial and happy,” Lott said. “The bottom line is we are as much about community and relationships

as we are about hand picking products for the store. Newsbeat is a place where everyone is welcome to come as they are, which helps to make the store itself a living breathing space.”

For the owners, one of the greatest rewards of maintaining a brick and mortar retail business over the past three decades has been the sense of community it brings.

“We have amazing customers,” Lott said. “Most we 55

would never have met if not for hosting a storefront. It rings true that if you sit in one place long enough, the whole world will pass by!”

Newsbeat has earned numerous accolades, including awards from the Sacramento News & Review for The Best Place to Lose Track of Time and The Best Literary Section of Periodicals. For twenty years, the Lotts ran a Newsbeat store in Downtown Sacramento, which closed in 2011.

“Happily, we still retain a loyal following of faithful Sacramento customers who cruise over the causeway just to see us in Davis,” Lott said.

To be acknowledged by Enterprise readers was an affirmation of her and her husband’s vision over the years and especially over the turbulent past year, Lott said.

In the 1990s, Lea was

recognized as the Davis Citizen of the Year, and she has never let up. She has served as president or a member of the board of many community and charitable organizations over the past decades. But her real community involvement is one-on-one. When folks call Lea for help, she finds a way to do so.

“Being a community volunteer is my calling,” said Lea. “I’m happy to be part of a strong network of community volunteers in Davis.”

In a community of volunteers like Davis, it is a remarkable honor to be recognized as the “most effective” community volunteer. But Lea Rosenberg has done it again.

A perennial winner in the minds of readers of the Enterprise, Lea Rosenberg has been chosen — for the eighth year — as “Most Effective Volunteer” for her wide-ranging and influential community involvement.

Lea and her husband Dave Rosenberg (who was chosen No. 2 most effective volunteer this year) are considered community powerhouses. Lea’s volunteer activities go back some 40 years.

If anything, she is more active today than she ever was.

Currently, Lea is most active with Soroptimist Interna-

tional of Davis, the Davis Odd Fellows, the Davis Encampment, the Davis Rebekah Lodge, Canton Davis, the Yolo County SPCA Board of Directors, Unleashing the Possibilities, Inc. Board, and the Sutter Davis Foundation Board.

She is actively engaged in a wide variety of charitable and community work ranging from the quest to build a new animal shelter for Yolo County, to calling Bingo every month helping different beneficiaries in the community, to Breakfast with Santa, a Taste of Davis, the Davis Classic Film Festival, the Davis Chocolate Festival, highway environmental cleanup, folding diapers for the Yolo Diaper Bank, or collecting toilet articles for folks in shelters, among others.
