Enterprise staff Crushed headlights and dented doors are a story of the past for customers of A-1 Body Shop, Davis’ top auto body shop as voted by Davis Enterprise readers.

This year marks 53 years in Davis for this family-owned auto body shop. Owner Brian Cross took over the shop from his father in 1990, making a livelihood out of caring for his customers and their cars.

Center City Automotive Best Auto Repair Shop Enterprise staff Doug Hatton has been in the automotive profession since the age of 16 when he began working with his father, Pete Hatton, at the elder Hatton’s Ford dealership at the corner of Fifth and G streets in downtown Davis.

He worked just about every job possible there and was particularly drawn to the service department.

So when Pete Hatton retired in 1982, his son decided to keep the service department open under a new name: Center City Automotive.

The rest is history. Center City Automotive moved in 1997 from that corner downtown to its current location on Madson Place but much else remained the same.

“Our employees have a

combined total of more than 220 years of expertise in working in the automotive repair industry and all but one was raised (here) and went to Davis school,” the company says.

The business prides itself on providing the best in automotive repair and customer service and appreciates the business it receives in return.

“We’re very grateful for the trust that our customers have placed in us and have continued to place in us with their continued patronage over the years,” the Hattons say.

“We enjoy the interaction with our customers and have many customers that are the third generation of their families to be bringing their vehicles to us. It’s been amazing to be a part of their lives and we consider them, and they consider us, family.”

Special to The Enterprise When Doug Malinoff, owner of University Honda, decided to retire and pass the dealership to Greg Shottenkirk, he announced, “After careful thought and consideration, the time has come to pass the dealership on to a new family.” That choice of words acknowledges why University Honda won this award 18 times in a row and Shottenkirk has continued that family tradition by winning Best of Yolo in its first two years.

Mike Leonard, Ph.D., and Terri Leonard, M.D., — who originally met each other in the teacher credential program at UC Berkeley — arrived in Davis in 1994, after Mike left his job as a geophysicist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and Terri left law school at UC Berkeley to attend medical school at UC Davis.

Mike was working in geophysical consulting in the Sacramento area and originally opened the tutoring business as a part-time job in 1997 while Terri was finishing her last two years of medical school.

Special to The Enterprise If you’re one of the many diners who voted Wok of Flame to win its fourth consecutive Best Chinese Food award, you’re probably surprised to hear that the restaurant changed ownership six months ago.

New owners Vivien Zheng and her brother Jay Lin had previously owned a Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area.

They came to Davis looking for a thriving Chinese restaurant to continue successfully rather than one in need of changes.

Although Vivien’s first language is Mandarin, while some of the chefs speak Cantonese, communication is seen as a key reason Wok of Flame is so successful. The two general managers, Richana Phim and Daniel

from a deep menu with over 50 options and even more combinations.

The chefs know the menu well and strive to be sure that an entrée ordered today will taste just like that food tasted two weeks ago. They get shipments of local farm vegetables three to four times a week to diminish the time from farm to chopsticks.

Some fans come for the best American style Chinese Food, but the chefs prepare traditional Mandarin, Hunan, Szechuan and vegetarian options to match every palate.

Favorite dishes include pork chow mein, salt and pepper chicken, general chicken, cream cheese wontons, egg rolls and, surprisingly, Gunther’s Ice Cream.

Davis Creamery Best Ice Cream

Enterprise staff Friends of Joe and Jen Schmidt, Dave and Stephanie Robert, started Davis Creamery in 2007. Business partners in cupcakes and cookies ultimately led to the renaming of the business as Jake’s Desserts. However, the Roberts ultimately brought back the Davis Creamery names in 2016.

The Schmidt family were excited about carrying on the tradition of Davis-made frozen treats and purchased the business from the Roberts later that year. Over the past four years, the sweet shoppe has expanded its offerings to include gourmet candied apples, french macarons, chocolates (including vegan) and other candy.

“Many are surprised that we make 100% of our frozen treats in the back of the store,” Joe says. “Though it ranges based on demand, we usually

make our ice creams and sorbets at least three times per week!” So the scoops are always fresh.

Another very unique feature is the annual “Bracketology,” a customer-idea competition each spring.

Customers submit flavor ideas in late February to early March in the store. Jen and Joe then select 16 that they haven’t previously made, that are unique and feasible to make.

They are placed in a bracket in a single-elimination tournament with customers coming into the store to place votes for their most preferred of the two that are head-tohead at that time. The tournament continues until there is a champion.

Kathmandu Kitchen Best Indian Food

Special to The Enterprise Kathmandu Kitchen was 2 years old in 2008 when Sukhjeevan Singh took over ownership of the restaurant.

Sukhjeevan’s longtime friend from San Francisco, Pavitter Singh, joined the business in 2010. By 2011 the two had become co-owners and Kathmandu Kitchen had started a string of 10 years in a row of being selected as Best Indian Food in Yolo County.

Each partner has a specialty within the business.

Sukhjeevan oversees the kitchen to maintain the quality and authenticity of the Northern Indian, Nepali, and Himalayan dishes that are served. The food is traditionally spicy, but milder versions are available for many dishes.

Anne Marie’s father and grandfather both had their own butcher shops in San Francisco. Anne Marie was accustomed to being behind a meat counter where you might say she grew up.

Sophia’s Thai Kitchen Best Thai Restaurant

Special to The Enterprise Sophia Patterson and her husband Guido started out running the kitchen at the Paragon Grill where Froggy’s now stands. They moved to the current location and opened as Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, Davis’ first Thai restaurant, in 1996.

In 1999, Sophia partnered with Gordon Langstaff and Kevin Wan joined the partnership in 2001, when the business expanded and added a bar. By 2004, Sophia had departed, leaving Gordon and Kevin as the co-owners of her namesake business.

Enterprise staff Originally opened in 1986, current owner Sukh Banwait bought Razor’s Edge Barber Shop in 2002. Readers have voted Razor’s Edge the Best Barber Shop in town for six years running.

After running the shop by himself for more than a decade, Banwait hired a new barber, Juan Ramirez, in 2019.

Ramirez had been a longtime client who finished barber school last year before joining Razor’s Edge in July 2019.

Banwait has kept his shop on the cutting edge of barbering, keeping up with new trends that have taken off in the last two or three years.

That’s the motto of the Pamela Trokanski Dance Workshop, named “Best Dance Studio” for the fourth year in a row.

“We believe in the dancer within every person and that movement is an act of life, whether you are a 3-year-old, a dancer in their 90s or somewhere in between,” says Trokanski, who has been teaching dance in Davis since 1984.

PTDW moved into its current location in Mace Ranch in 2002 and currently offers everything from ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap and hiphop to Pilates, PBT (progressing ballet technique), yoga and belly dancing. In addition, award-winning screenwriter Sterling Anderson is

Classes are available for all ages and levels, with performance opportunities for those who want them, or ongoing training for those who just

Fridays during the year.

A strong faculty of eleven teachers brings a diverse range of training to students.

Trokanski herself holds a teaching credential and teaches dance at Davis High School, in addition to running the Pamela Trokanski Dance Theatre, a non-profit, contemporary dance company, for the past 35 years. Her most recent project was an expansion of Art in 4 Dimensions, originally funded by an arts grant from the city of Davis and now funded by the PTDT. This year’s performance series featured a collaboration of 24 artists in different mediums, creating eight unique works of art through the visual arts, music, poetry, video, and movement.

Many Pilates aficionados in Davis have found that second home in Balance Point Pilates Studio, which for the second year in a row has been voted Best Pilates Studio by readers of The Davis Enterprise.

Established in 2004 by the studio’s previous owner, Barbara Zaro, Balance Point today operates under the helm of Sevgi Leno, who started out as a client and whose passion for Pilates inspired her to become an instructor in 2007.

She took over the studio when Zaro retired in 2017.

Lea and her husband Dave Rosenberg (who was chosen No. 2 most effective volunteer this year) are considered community powerhouses. Lea’s volunteer activities go back some 40 years.

Fast-forward to 2020 and they are deep into a construction project rebuilding the West Davis Veterinary Center from the ground up.

Pence Gallery Best Art Gallery Enterprise staff Longtime Davis residents may remember a small yellow building at Second and D streets holding exhibits that were a little unusual for the small town in the ’70s and ’80s.

Its first show, the “Tooth Show,” back in 1976, included artists’ interpretations of teeth and dentistry in honor of the gallery’s namesake. The Pence is named after Dr. Joe Pence and his wife Hazel, who donated the original building and land to the city of Davis for use by the community.

Enterprise staff For the past 33 years, The Avid Reader independent bookstore has served the Davis campus and community. From the time of the bookstore’s opening in January of 1987, the goal of original owner Alzada Knickerbocker has been to have it be the best in book selection and service, while reflecting and representing the interests of Davis residents as shown in their history of requests and purchasing.

As well, The Avid Reader has supported the community through donations to and ticket sales for local fundraisers. It has also been the sole retail outlet for downtown gift certificate sales, the place for monthly book club meetings, and the setting for campus gatherings.

The store began when Knickerbocker purchased an existing store in the downtown, Orpheus, and developed it into a general independent bookstore, locally based. It moved into its current location in the early nineties. Today the bookstore’s offerings also incorporate other popular gift items, among them T-shirts, socks, tea towels, soaps and mugs.

Its history has included four additional storefronts, the most recent, a toy, game and card shop — Avid Reader Active — in the same downtown block as the bookstore.

The other three — a children’s store in downtown Davis and two full service bookstores in Sacramento — have since closed. A fifth storefront — Avid Reader on Broadway — remains open and is owned separately by Knickerbocker’s former business partner, Stan Forbes.

Since its doors opened, The Avid Reader — in combination with Avid Reader Active — has processed more than two million transactions at its registers, provided books for more than 3,000 in-store and off-site book events, and employed hundreds of

Sole Desire Shoes Best Women’s Shoe Store Enterprise staff Started in 1990 in Sonoma County by the parents of current owners David and Daniel Astobiza, Sole Desire now has 16 locations throughout California, including their store at 801 Second Street in downtown Davis.

The store is a family business through and through.

Anicia, Daniel’s wife, manages office operations, while David’s wife Michele Pellagrini works as the marketing and social media manager.
