Shottenkirk Honda Best Car Dealership Enterprise staff It was a case of new name, same great service for Shottenkirk Honda of Davis, as the longtime Honda dealer on Chiles Road was named Best Car Dealership in Yolo County for the 19th year in a row by Enterprise readers. Manager Shane Golubski gives the credit primarily to Shottenkirk Honda employees. “The same (employees) are here” who worked for University Honda, Golubski said, “and we hope will be the same people who will be here in 10, 15 or 20 years. They are the ones who really won the award.”

Shottenkirk Honda of Davis employees celebrate their 19th win of Best Car Dealership in Yolo County. Greg Shottenkirk’s Shottenkirk Automotive Group, based in

West Burlington, Iowa, bought the former University Honda in

September and the dealership didn’t miss a beat, still offering the

commitment to customers it has since 1978; selling popular Honda models and providing a full line of services for the vehicles it sells. In addition to the local awards the dealership is a six-time winner of the President’s Award from American Honda Motor. It’s a goal for the staff to achieve this every year, one they focus on doing throughout the year. Shottenkirk Automotive Group sells more than 30 car brands at several dealerships, mostly in Iowa and Illinois. Golubski added, “We truly appreciate this recognition. For

Sophia’s Thai Kitchen Best Bar, Best Thai Food By Bob Schultz Sophia’s Thai Kitchen took a pair of awards in the Best of Yolo poll, with Enterprise readers naming it Best Bar and Best Thai Food. Sophia Patterson and her husband Guido started out as the kitchen at the Paragon Grill where Froggy’s/ Tommy J’s Grill now stands. They moved to the current location and opened as Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, Davis’ first Thai restaurant, in 1996. In 1999, Sophia partnered with Gordon Langstaff and Kevin Wan joined the partnership in 2001, when the business expanded and added a bar. By 2004, Sophia had departed, leaving Gordon and Kevin as the co-owners of her namesake business.

Dos Coyotes Best Burrito Enterprise staff Dos Coyotes is the result of two major inspirations: Bobby Coyote’s love of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and his childhood in Los Angeles. He grew up in a quiet corner of West L.A., eating some of the best, most authentic Mexican food you can imagine. As soon as he was old enough, he started making his own Mexican food. As Bobby’s sister was working on her Ph.D. at UC Davis, Bobby realized that Davis was the perfect place to open his first restaurant — in the Marketplace on Cowell Boulevard in 1991. In the 20 plus years since opening that first restaurant, Dos Coyotes has grown, but the

core principles haven’t changed — delicious food, engaging atmosphere and exceptional value. That’s why Bobby started Dos Coyotes and why he goes to work today. He loves watching people walk through the door, enjoying their food and appreciate what they have to offer. Dos Coyotes is also an important part of the community, raising money for many groups, clubs, teams and organizations in Davis, including UCD fraternities and sororities, Davis school clubs, school bands, scout troops, firefighters, police, and military support organizations, including the Yolo County Short Term Emergency Aid

Woodstock’s Pizza Best Happy Hour Enterprise staff Woodstock’s Pizza in Davis has been the proud winner of many a Best Pizza honor in The Enterprise’s Readers’ Choice contest. But this year, they took the Best Happy Hour prize for the first time. The welcoming bar side of Woodstock’s offers a variety of incentives to belly up to the bar. For example, every day customers can get half-off pitchers of beer at Woodstock’s between 4 and 6 p.m. Add to that the

variety of drink specials throughout the week — like “Thirsty Thursdays” where all specialty drinks are $2 off all day, or Friday’s promotional “Friday Shot & a Beer” which gives patrons a variety of beers and spirits for $6 — and a good time will be had by all. And while happy hour is generally thought of as a work-week happening, Sundays are also a day to indulge at Woodstock’s. Every Sunday, all day, the bar offers $5 Bloody Marys and mimosas. Kathmandu Kitchen Best Indian Food BY BOB SCHULTZ Special to The Enterprise Kathmandu Kitchen was 2 years old in 2008 when Sukhjeevan Singh took over ownership of the restaurant. Sukhjeevan’s longtime friend from San Francisco, Pavitter Singh, joined the business in 2010. By 2011 the two had become co-owners and Kathmandu Kitchen had started a string of nine years in a row of being selected as Best Indian Food in Yolo County. Each partner has a specialty within the business. Sukhjeevan oversees the kitchen to maintain the quality and authenticity of the

Northern Indian, Nepali, and Himalayan dishes that are served. The food is traditionally spicy, but milder versions are available for many dishes. Pavitter is the on-thefloor host and customer service specialist making sure the customers feel welcome and well attended to while they dine. Kathmandu recently moved away from their mid-day buffet by expanding the lunch menu with a wide array of lunch choices. Many of the lunch options are priced below their old buffet prices while maintaining the hearty portions and tasty side dishes. Kathmandu fully embraces the variety of delivery

Buckhorn Steakhouse Best Steak, Best Winters Restaurant Enterprise staff Buckhorn Steakhouse in the historic De Vilbiss Hotel in Winters has again won the honors of Best Winters Restaurant and Best Steak. According to its website, the Buckhorn Bar opened in the hotel in the 1930s, and in 1951, “De Vilbiss’ great-grandson, Ben Stephens took over, becoming a fixture at the Buckhorn Bar for a quarter century, retiring in 1976. From 1967 to 1977, Burma and Vic Mentink operated the Buckhorn Dining Room.” The upscale restaurant was acquired in 1980 by John Pickerel, who is proud that “A hundred years later, the same spirit of friendliness that made the Hotel De Vilbiss

popular at the turn of the century, is still found at the Buckhorn; now famous across the state for its beef, lamb and fresh fish.” Customers at the Buckhorn appreciate the weekly specials, such as Monday’s 14 oz. Ribeye, Tri-Tip Tuesdays, all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays, and burger and beer Thursdays. The Buckhorn can also liven up weddings, parties and all kinds of social events with custom-menu catering. “Through our extensive network of local farmers, ranchers, and vintners, we can cater meals featuring local food, sustainably raised whenever possible, to include chicken, lamb, pork, and grass-fed beef, as well as local fruits and vegetables for every season,”

The Davis Creamery crew (from left) Joe Schmidt, Brady Schmidt, Carson Schmidt, Makena Wahl and Jen Schmidt, make ice cream a family business. Enterprise staff The family owned and operated Davis Creamery specializes in Davis-made ice creams and sorbets, as well as cupcakes and gourmet candy apples. The owners, Joe and Jen Schmidt, continue a more than 15-year tradition of producing small batches of frozen treats each week in the downtown store, starting with locally produced milk and ingredients like bananas, avocados or raspberries. The Schmidts especially like to create new flavors based on customer competitions. Annually, Davis Creamery runs a tournament they call “Bracketology!” that coincides with college basketball’s March Madness. Customers provide the key ingredients and clever names, and then twice-weekly brackets are made and voted on until a winner is crowned. People can wander in to Davis Creamery and try the new flavors and vote throughout March on the Sweet 16. Bracketology has provided winners such as Trifecta (Oreos, Butterfingers and Reese’s Peanut

The tea flavors are popular, Jen Schmidt said in a recent television interview, and Davis Creamery has gotten good at blending the tea leaves with the ice cream base to create intense flavors. The Schmidts both come from entrepreneurial families, according to the shop’s website — Joe’s father is a farmer in Iowa; Jen’s father had a successful printing business in the East Bay. They have three children who help at Davis Creamery as well. For more information about Davis Creamery, visit http://originaldavis creamery.com/.

Celebrating 25 years! Jim Matthews opened the first Lamppost Pizza franchise in the Sacramento Region in July of 1982. Jim later met Tim and Marilyn Brophy and together they established the Davis location in January of 1994. Tim passed away in 2001 and Marilyn retired in 2010 leaving Jim and his wife, Linda Prato, continuous sole proprietors. Today, the people you’re most likely to see behind the counter are general manager Mike Bryner and manager Janet Bernauer throwing dough and providing the great customer service our patrons deserve. We take pride in proving great quality food for our customers. We offer only organic leaf produce in our salads, Niman Angus beef on our burgers, EVOO and real butter in our kitchen. Naturally cured pepperoni with no added nitrates or preservatives and, when in season, locally grown heirloom tomatoes add even more delicious taste to our menu.

Davis Food Co-op Best Health/Organic Food, Best Vegetarian Enterprise staff It was two wins for the Davis Food Co-op in the Best of Yolo poll, with the downtown Davis fixture earning Best Health/Organic Food and Best Vegetarian Food. “We want to thank everyone who voted for us the best Health/ Organic Food in town for 11 years in a row,” Johanna Abasto said. “We are so happy that folks continue to enjoy our delicious organic salad bar, crazy crafty beer selection, and our magnificent cheese counter. We are always incorporating new vegetarian options and healthy food in our hot Bar and Grab and Go. With our recent store makeover, we brought more organic and

found that the member-owners are dedicated to local, organic produce and the wastefree shopping options found in the bulk department. They

expressed love for their Co-op, but at the same time provided constructive feedback to improve the store. The makeover focused on two main

points: sustainability and enhancing the shopping experience. Some key highlights are emphasizing the bulk department by moving it to front and center of the store, increasing the grindyour-own-nut-butter selection, expanding the product line in liquid and coffee, upgrading lighting throughout the store and installing more energy-efficient equipment. The new layout makes the store much easier to navigate, with wider aisles and lower shelves, products will be easier to access for everyone. Some changes were behind the scenes, such as staff training. Others were big, like the demolition of the old exterior Safeway stone wall that was

Lamppost Pizza Best Pizza Enterprise staff A community fixture and longtime supporter of local schools and sports, Lamppost Pizza has earned the title of Best Pizza from Davis Enterprise readers. Lampost Pizza started Sacramento in 1982, and added a Davis store in 1994 with only 2,000 square feet. Owners Jim Matthews and Linda Prato actively supported local youth sports and after a few short years business had grown and they added more dining area and storage to increase to its present size of 3,700 squarefeet. Business took another spurt in 2013 when they added craft

beers to the menu. “After several secondplace finishes in the Best of Yolo competition, we are delighted to be chosen No. 1,” Matthews said. Several facelifts over the years to keep up the facility have brought it to its current form. Ever-present is the drive to offer the besttasting food and a healthier menu. Matthews has nothing but praise for Managers, Mike Bryner and Janet Bernauer, with a combined four decades of experience. “I have worked in and owned Lamppost Pizza locations for 40 years,” Matthews said. “When added to Mike and Janet’s tenure at

Morgan’s On Main Best Woodland Restaurant Enterprise staff When heading out of town, readers of The Davis Enterprise selected Morgan’s On Main, as the Best Woodland Restaurant. After opening her first restaurant — Maria’s Cantina — owner Kellie Morgan knew she eventually wanted to open two more in Woodland. She’s been a resident for 30 years and after seeing the growth and change of downtown knew in 2015 that it was time to add the second piece — Morgan’s On Main. Her son opened Morgan’s Mill (coffee, beer and wine) in May of 2017. Kellie developed Lincoln Avenue,

Woodland’s distinguished private event venue for hosting functions; wedding receptions, celebrations and business meetings. One additional piece will be added to her company, Yolo Eats Restaurant Group, later this year.

“The thought behind Morgan’s On Main was the desire to bring something different to Woodland’s offerings,” Morgan said, “a place that gives families and friends the opportunity to celebrate special occasions, couples a

night on the town without heading to Sacramento, and all of our guests a place to feel comfortable enough to walk in from work in jeans to have a spectacular steak or lamb shank by Chef (John) Gamboni.”

The restaurant offers certified Angus beef and fresh seafood cut in-house. Burgers are ground in-house using rib eye, filet mignon and New York steak. Desserts are produced fresh by their own pastry chef. Morgan’s offers distinctive dining areas making each visit a unique experience, including two patios; an enclosed patio in the back with a living succulent wall, and a front patio allowing Main Street dining. “Great food, service and vibe can be found in Yolo County,” Morgan said, “even Woodland. Zia’s Delicatessen Best Sandwich Enterprise staff Anne Marie and Kevin Crilly opened Zia’s Delicatessen in Davis in 1995, after relocating to Davis from the Bay Area. The San Francisco natives missed their neighborhood deli. Anne Marie’s father and grandfather both had their own butcher shops in San Francisco. Anne Marie was accustomed to being behind a meat counter where you might say she grew up. The Crilly children also have grown up behind the meat and cheese counter at Zia’s. They, too, learned the delicatessen business and two of them now manage the Zia’s Sacramento location. Both locations cater, so your next business meeting or family party needs can be stress-free. Where can you find a yogurt place with 101 topping options? YoloBerry Yogurt, of course! Davis’ best yogurt can be found at YoloBerry, 316 C St., in a historic 1929 home across from Central Park. “The fact that this was once a home — an old one at that — provided the ideal atmosphere when I started YoloBerry,” owner Lee Pflugrath said. “We provide an upbeat atmosphere where customers can gather on the front lawn, sit on chairs or benches outside or remain inside. We also provide excellent customer service and teach our employees the importance of friendly, efficient service.” Something not many people know about the business is that Pflugrath’s father, Jack, gave the yogurt shop its name. “Retired from UCD, my dad loves to do maintenance at YoloBerry. He accepts no compensation but gets all the fro-yo he can eat,” the younger Pflugrath said. YoloBerry is known for its unique frozen yogurt creations, which get

Enterprise staff Razor’s Edge Barber Shop has won the Readers’ Choice award five years in a row, and owner Sukh Banwait has worked hard to keep his shop No. 1. Banwait has run Razor’s Edge by himself, six days a week, never leaving the shop at all most days. He’s had only a week of vacation in nearly four years. But there’s no place he’d rather be. “No other place in the world I would work,” he said. Still, he is pleased to be adding a barber to share the work. “After running Razor’s Edge by myself since 2005,” Banwait

Ramirez has been in Davis since 2001, working as a Realtor, JV assistant football coach and substitute teacher. He is completing a barber program in Sacramento this spring. “Although I wasn’t looking,” Banwait said about Ramirez, “I think I found a great fit ... Maybe now I won’t have to send clients to get me coffee and I can actually leave the shop once in a while.” Banwait bought Razor’s Edge from the original owner back in

2003, when the shop was located on Third Street. He moved to G Street in July 2014. His focus has always been keeping a “traditional family vibe,” while also taking the traditional barber shop into the future. “I feel every barber shop has (its) own personality. Dennis T. Vo, DC Best Chiropractor Enterprise staff Dr. Dennis Vo, who practices chiropractic at Physical Edge in Davis, took 2019’s accolade as Best Chiropractor in Yolo County from Enterprise readers. Vo earned his doctorate in chiropractic in 2005 from Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, and studied neurobiology, physiology and behavior as an undergraduate at UC Davis. While earning his doctorate, he was on the Palmer Student Sports Council. There he honed his treatment and management of various athletes, including world-class cyclists, soccer players and runners. Dr. Vo joined the medical team at Institute for Restorative Health in South Davis in October 2008. When IRH closed, Dr. Vo moved next door and began practicing out of Physical Edge in February 2013. “My relationships with the physical therapists at Physical Edge is impactful,” Vo told The Enterprise. “I believe that it has expanded both of our skills and knowledge to better serve the patients we see.

After joining forces with the team at Physical Edge, he embraced the Functional Movement Systems model of care. He works to logically break down dysfunctional movement patterns pinpointing the root cause as a mobility problem or stability/motor control problem. Depending on the results, chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue techniques and corrective exercises are used as treatment. “Dennis is a very experienced, dedicated and caring chiropractor,” said Marianne Moore, Co-owner Physical Edge. “He empathizes with his patients and works diligently to get them back to their best quality of life. We feel incredibly lucky to have him working side by side with our wonderful physical therapy team.” Aside from his dedication to his patients, Dr. Vo is a car enthusiast, and enjoys spending time with his wife and children. Physical Edge is thankful for its patients and members who voted it the best physical therapy center in Yolo County. Mat and Marianne Moore are long time Davisites; they attended Davis High and UC Davis, were married in 1995 and opened Physical Edge in 2003. They believe they complement each other and feel lucky to work side-by-side each day. In 2007, they opened in South Davis at the current location. The goal of Physical Edge is to be the physical-therapy and fitness provider of choice for the greater Davis area by providing the highest-quality services. “We place the highest emphasis on customer service and providing a safe, pristine environment where everyone is made to feel comfortable,” Marianne Moore said. The center has five physical therapists, one physical therapy

assistant and a chiropractor. They specialize in orthopedics, spine and chiropractic care, neurological disorders including the BIG Program for Parkinson’s patients, hand and vestibular therapy, injury prevention, and functional-movement assessment. “Physical Edge is most definitely a ‘teaching’ facility,” according to Moore. “We offer a very comprehensive internship program to primary UC Davis students to promote the field of physical therapy and chiropractic care. In addition, we work with several Physical Therapy DPT programs throughout California and the U.S. to provide 10-14 week clinical affiliations to their physical therapy students.” The Moores remodeled the facility last Spring and are looking forward to continuing to provide the best quality care and experience to their members and patients in 2019.

Her growing enthusiasm and passion for education and living the “pilates lifestyle” inspired her to complete her comprehensive teacher training through Body Arts and Science International in 2007. Sevgi worked for 12 years as an instructor at Balance Point while also teaching elementary school. Barbara Zaro opened Balance Point in 2004. After undergoing back surgery, she fell in love with pilates. She found that pilates was the only form of exercise that could relieve her pain while still healing. She opened the studio nearly 15 years ago so that others would have access to a gentler form of exercise that enabled them to build strength, alleviate pain and continue to heal physically and mentally from various injuries that daily life can bring. When the time came that Zeno was ready

30

to retire, it seemed like a natural, seamless transition for Leno to take over, and she became the new owner in September 2017. During this transition, the studio also moved locations to a larger, more open space, but still remains in the heart of downtown Davis. Leno feels very fortunate to be able to combine her two passions, education and pilates, into a full-time career. “We want to thank all of our wonderful clients and the community for voting Balance Point the best pilates studio in Yolo County,” she told The Enterprise. “We would not be the studio we are today without our dedicated, hard-working, loyal clients.” Almost all of Balance Point’s instructors are, or have been, classroom educators from elementary school teachers to college professors. As educators, they are constantly pushing themselves to learn more, including hosting the Body Arts and Science International mat, foundation and graduate training programs. “By bringing these training programs to the studio we are able to remain an integral part of the educational process,” Zeno said.

In the past eight years, Davis Dermatology has grown into a well-known and well-respected practice and for the eighth year in a row, has been chosen Best Dermatology practice by Davis Enterprise readers. In 2011, Dr. Earlyn Noll took a leap of faith when she left UC Davis Dermatology in Sacramento and opened Davis Dermatology. Many said that in a time when large hospitals and managed care ruled health care, starting a small solo practice was a thing of the past. “Thank you for an amazing eight years,” Noll said. “Thank you for entrusting Davis Dermatology with your skin health and rejuvenation needs. With your continued support, Davis Dermatology is now the premier office for all that is skin. We are committed to excellent patient care and beautiful results. We pride ourselves on our personalized approach to cosmetic dermatology, and are dedicated to staying at the forefront of the latest in cosmetic procedures and products. “Patients often say that we are a ‘small town office with big city results.’ They appreciate that our practice is founded on excellent customer service, great medicine and amazing results,” she said. “I feel that the best results with anti-aging occur when the face is naturally rejuvenated and not distorted.” Dr. Noll’s business model allows her to provide her patients with one of the most important aspects of the doctor visit — time. As most patients will agree, doctor visits at large hospital-based practices are often a short 5

to 10 minutes. At Davis Dermatology, Dr. Noll takes the time to listen to her patients and discuss treatment options. While Dr. Noll is an expert in both medical and cosmetic patients, she says that the majority of her patients seek her for her expertise in cosmetic dermatology. She has patients that travel from as far away as New York and Florida. She says that “trying to navigate between all of the anti-aging procedures and products can be difficult even for the most knowledgeable patient.” Unlike most medspas, patients receive a one-onone consultation with Dr. Noll, a board-certified Dermatologist. “Patients really appreciate the expertise and guidance I offer during their consultations. They appreciate that I am residency trained in cosmetic dermatology and that my goal is to educate them on their options and not simply sell them on procedures or products.” “The field of aesthetic medicine is constantly advancing,” she said. “As a commitment to staying abreast of the latest in aesthetic medicine, I make it a priority to bring new services and products to the practice each year, I am however, very selective. I only add procedures and products that are proven to be the Best in Class. New this year are: Hydrafacial, Vivace microneedling, Instalift, and SkinMedica’s Lumivive. We look forward to another exciting year! Thank you!”

Employees at Matthews Mattress are kept educated on the latest advances of sleep products and why getting a proper level of sleep is so important. “But we try not to overcomplicate it,” said Bill Holland, manager of the 10-store, family-owned business that opened its first outlet June 30, 1991. Holland was brought on board the following August and now oversees the merchandising and advertising for the stores owned by Kevin and Kristin Matthews. Holland, who is based in Vacaville, said much of the information and training comes from the vendors, but the company also uses internet programs and other avenues to get information. “The top vendors we sell put a lot of emphasis on training,” Holland said. The store sells five of the top-selling mattress brands in the nation. Holland said that certainly helps to get people into the store, but it is the staff approach that leads to sales and keeps them coming back. “It’s always comfortable. We always greet them when they come in and make them

Family owned and operated for 38 years, Redwood Barn Nursery is a mainstay in the local nursery business and winner of this year’s Readers’ Choice Award for best nursery. Since it first opened in 1981 in the familiar red barn on Fifth Street, “we’ve watched the city grow and the tastes and styles change, but gardening continues to be a favorite hobby for each successive generation,” owner Don Shor notes. Partnering in that endeavor, Redwood Barn provides a diverse selection of plants and supplies to area gardeners, as well as the information needed to make them successful. In fact, asked what Redwood Barn offers that others don’t, the answer is “Great advice!”

Redwood Barn Nursery 1607 Fifth St., Davis 530-758-2276 Best Nursery Second — Davis Ace Hardware Third — Three Palms Nursery

That advice can be found on-site, as well as in Shor’s regular gardening column in The Davis Enterprise, which he’s been writing for more than 19 years, and in a garden talk show on KDRT-LP, which Shor and Lois Richter have been doing since 2005. “Thanks for making us your local nursery for 38 years,” Shor says.

Matthews Mattress Best Mattress comfortable. We are never pushy,” Holland said. He said the staff works to be available to answer questions, but lets the shoppers explore the store and merchandise at their pace. The result, he said, is that the company has generations of customers who have come back. The company also has faced the many changes in the industry over the years, not the least of which now is online mattress sales. But he trusts the consumer to see for themselves and decide on what he views as the better quality offered at Matthews. Customers may have taken that handson shopping to the limits over the years, actually falling asleep and napping on the mattresses in the store. “I usually leave them alone until they wake up,” Holland has said in past interviews. The company has a staff of delivery drivers and offers a 120-day comfort guarantee. Holland said he gets very few returns after the four months are up. “We ask that they give it at least 30 days to break it in,” he said. “Sleep is an important part of our health and our overall well-being,” Holland said. The right mattress can make a difference.

Jeff learned how to wash windows on grand estates around Lake Tahoe over 10 years ago. “We have been perfecting our own rigorous Jeff Likes Clean Windows training program over the past six years,” Jeff says. Sunny Energy Best Solar Company Enterprise staff Sunny Energy of California was created in August of 2018 with the merger of Sunny Energy of Tempe, Ariz., and Davis-based Talbott Solar. But nothing changed as far as Davis residents are concerned as they once again named the company the Best Solar in Yolo County. Owners Dean Newberry, Joe Cunningham, Chris Wood, Jake Stainbrook and Terry Rials continue their mission to provide homeowners with the latest technology to generate solar energy, store excess energy for use when there is not enough sunlight, and to become involved in the evolution of the electric grid. Sunny’s energetic, knowledgeable and experienced team is highly motivated to make sure every customer is presented with the best options to reach their goals in going green, gaining independence from the utility company, and maximize savings and return on their investment. “We’re not trying to make a quick sale,” spokeswoman Chelsea Dietz said. “Going solar is a personal decision and we truly want to educate homeowners so they can make the

best decision for their family. In order to do this, we have a free ‘Homeowner’s Guide to Solar’ that is available on our website, www. sunnyenergy.solar. The guide addresses topics such as factors to consider before going solar, some common myths, what people should know before meeting with a consultant, how warranties/guarantees work, and other additional information that is valuable to anyone considering solar.”

Lea and her husband Dave are considered community powerhouses, and Lea’s volunteer activities go back some 40 years. If anything, she is more active today than she ever was. Currently, Lea is most active with the Davis Odd Fellows, the Davis Encampment, the Davis Rebekah Lodge, Canton Davis, Soroptimist International of Davis, the Yolo County SPCA Board of Directors, Unleashing the

Midtown Animal Clinic has been a staple of veterinary care in Davis for more than 45 years. The clinic was opened as a three-doctor practice and was purchased 10 years later by Dr. Cliff Gravem, who had been a Midtown technician while in veterinary school. A new clinic replaced the much smaller original offices in 2011, and after 34 years as owner, Gravem sold the practice in 2017 to Dr. Kelly Regan, who was a receptionist and technician at Midtown prior to becoming a veterinary doctor herself. The clinic remains wellloved in town, as evidenced by its selection as best veterinary clinic in the Readers Choice awards of 2019. Chad Carlock Best Attorney Enterprise staff Once again, Chad Carlock can claim “Best Attorney in Davis,” an accolade he has won every year since the category was established. Carlock opened his business in 2000 after working for the Law Offices of David Rosenberg prior to Rosenberg’s appointment as judge of the Yolo Superior Court. “I work as a solo practitioner, with no support staff, no paralegals and no associate attorneys,” Carlock said. “I enjoy providing legal problemsolving through direct, personal and candid communication.” Carlock focuses primarily on business, contract and landlord-tenant law. In addition, he works with service providers for people with devel-

First Northern Bank Best Bank Enterprise staff Enterprise readers once again have voted First Northern as the best bank in Yolo County — its 16th win in 16 years! Maybe it’s because First Northern Bank has had years of practice, having been in business since 1910; it has a proven track record of being good at what it does. But it’s also related to First Northern’s commitment to remain independent, and to support and reinvest in each of the communities the Bank serves. And community service is not just a catchphrase at First Northern. Employees volunteer an average of more than one week per year in community service, and the Bank has donated over $2.3 million to its communities over the past 10 years. First Northern also strives to build long-lasting relationships with its customers, with an annual customer retention rate of more than 97 percent. And, the employees are dedicated, too — 65 percent of them are shareholders of the company, giving them a vested interest in customer satisfaction and the success of the bank. “Community banking is a people

Carlock has been working closely this year with several local nonprofits, including helping to form the Davis Blue Devil Athletic Boosters and the DHS/Holmes Orchestra Boosters. “Thank you to the community for continuing to support me as the Best Attorney in Yolo County!” Carlock said. Chad DeMasi Best Realtor Enterprise staff Once again, Chad DeMasi of the DeMasi Group has come out on top as the top Realtor in Yolo County in the Readers’ Choice Survey. The DeMasi Group includes Chad’s parents Mona and Frank DeMasi, local real estate professionals with decades of Davis experience. “It’s been a two-generation business helping families and friends buy and sell property in Yolo County,” Chad DeMasi said. He added that real estate has always been “a relationship business ... and we focus on relationships.” But with the growing use of mobile apps and online videos, technology has become important, too. “Our alignment with Keller Williams Realty is way above the technology my parents had 30 years ago,” DeMasi said. “If you are a Realtor selling someone’s house, you need to put it out there for all the world to see. “Davis is a wonderful place to work, and call home,” with many “amazing real estate professionals who are collaborative and communicative.”

Carbahal & Company has been a constant champion of the community and an advocate for all clients. “Today we are proud to be a full-service firm, providing high-quality, professional service with a personal touch,” Manny said, “This year is our 35th anniversary and we feel stronger than ever.” The financial firm — which earned the city of Davis’ Excellence in Economic Development Award in 2012 and the Davis Chamber of Commerce Business

Their team is committed to partnering with clients to make the process of obtaining a home loan smooth, stress-free and even a little fun. This is the seventh year in a row The Mengali Group has won this award. “We are thrilled to be named in the Best of Yolo County again,” said Cara Mengali, manager of the local Guild Mortgage branch. “We do not take this honor lightly and feel it is a testament to our knowledge of the lending process, but also to the extremes we go to ensure we are giving the best client experience possible.” Their involvement in the community goes much further than just lending. Every month they sponsor a local charity in their Guild Giving program. Such benefactors have included the Davis Schools Foundation, Yolo County SPCA and the Yolo Food Bank.

Mother & Baby Source Best Place to Buy for Kids Enterprise staff Locally owned and independent since 1995, Mother & Baby Source is again this year’s Best Buy for Kids, as well as Best Independent Retailer. Offering exceptional customer service to help community members select baby shower gifts, breast pumps, nursing bras and a wide selection of baby and toddler products, Mother & Baby Source also provides classes and support groups to help new parents prepare for their little ones. Nichole and Will Arnold took over the business in 2016, making some subtle changes in the offerings and operations of Mother & Baby Source. “These changes include a sharper focus on products for the youngest children (newborn to 3 years old), a modernized point-ofsale and inventory system and a greater role in the larger business community,” Nichole said.

“More people should know about our ‘Mommy Lounge’ with rocking chairs, sofas, nursing pillows, a changing table and a baby scale free for your use,” she said. “It’s an absolute oasis in a bustling downtown, especially when your little one needs a feeding or diaper change!” “Thank you for voting us, once again, the Best Independent Retailer and Best Place to Buy for Kids in Yolo County!” Nichole said. “Our family takes incredible pride in the services we are able to provide our youngest neighbors and their parents. We hope our unique services and products can make it all just a little bit easier and more enjoyable!” For more information, visit the store at 714 Second St. in Davis, go online to www.motherandbaby source.com, email info@ motherandbabysource.com or call 530-756-6667.

Best Place to Buy a Gift Best Independent Furniture Retailer

“We’ve had people who have come in after their online sofa has arrived, to replace it with something they can sit on,” Storm said. “I think they’ve gotten burned too many times.” Storm and her two Design House designers, Adi Braeman 1015 Olive Dr., Davis and Lynn Tracy, first help (530) 758-4610 customers find what fits, then choose the style, color and fabric. Second — Wirth “We help them get Furniture & Interiors something that’s practical. Third — Nakamura People come back 30 years later and get their next Brothers Furniture sofa,” Storm said. “I’m not fooling.” One thing that sets Design House apart is the sale policy. Typically when on sale, showroom items are discounted at 20 percent. If the customer special orders that item to their liking, they get a 30-percent discount. “You get a bigger discount if you’re patient and get the sofa that’s really perfect,” Storm said. With that, she is back to the warehouse to move more sofas.

“We focus on fitting the seat to the customer,” said Noni Storm, owner of Design House Gallery. Storm was in the process of moving a new line of England Furniture Co. sofas into her showroom at 1015 Olive Drive in Davis. Storm established the business nearly 40 years ago in the downtown district before moving 10 years later at 1015 Olive Drive. “We had a little bit of everything,” Storm said. Now while the business sells all furniture, it focuses on “upholstery” — simply put, everything that has upholstery on it, opposed to “case goods” — all-wood furniture. Storm recently noticed that the trend to buying furniture online has shifted back to brick-and-mortar stores.

Second-generation owners David and Danny Astobiza’s parents opened the first European Comfort Shoe Store in 1990, with a focus on shoes that promote foot health. That was a new concept at the time, but it was just what customers in Davis were looking for when Sole Desire Shoes opened here in 2011. Director of marketing Michele Pellagrini said “Our motto has always been to treat our customers and employees like they are all a part of our extended family. We couldn’t be here today without a great team of employees helping us maintain the level of service that Sole Desire is known for.”

Lu’Ro Jewelers Best Jeweler

Diego Rodriguez and Jose Lopez know a little something about being voted best jewelry shop, especially since Lu’Ro Jewelers is the back-to-back winner of The Davis Enterprise’s Best of Yolo County contest. Both are former employees of De Luna Jewelers, itself a winner of the contest before the Second Street business closed its doors in 2016 after 48 years in business. Rodriguez and Lopez branched out from there, opening Lu’Ro Jewelers on Fifth Street later that year with a small inventory and big plans. “We set out with the goal of having a jewelry shop that not only provided great quality services, but also one that could become a place that is truly invested in not only the downtown

are planned for the coming year. Both born and raised in Davis, Rodriguez and Lopez have a combined 15 years’ experience as jewelers and salesmen, having been trained at the prestigious Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco. Working under De Luna owners Richard and Kyoko Miyano Luna, they learned “not only the sales aspect of the industry but also the evaluation and appraisal side of jewelry business and the invaluable unique way to interact with your customers,” Rodriguez said. Lu’Ro Jewelers also offers in-house repairs, restorations, custom designs, engraving and consignment opportunities in a family-friendly environment. The company is
