Welcome to the annual edition of The Davis Enterprise’s Readers’ Choice results. Yolo County has many wonderful businesses, services and people who go above and beyond. We at The Enterprise like to give them a well-deserved pat on the back by showcasing them here. A special thanks to Enterprise photographers Sue Cockrell, Fred Gladdis and Wayne Tilcock! This year we expanded the number of categories, giving readers the chance to weigh in on even more of their favorites. These winners earn special recognition and bragging rights for the next 12 months, so we suggest you keep the Readers’ Choice edition handy to use throughout the year. To facilitate this becoming your go-to guide, we’ve organized the section by categories: automotive services; education; food and drink; health, fitness and beauty; home services; miscellaneous; pet services; professional services; and shopping and retail. Enjoy!

Crushed headlights and dented doors are a story of the past for customers of A-1 Body Shop, Davis’ top auto body shop as voted by Davis Enterprise readers. This year marks 50 years in Davis for this family-owned auto body shop. Owner Brian Cross took over the shop from his father in 1990, making a livelihood out of caring for his customers and their cars. “We take pride in our work. ... Our goal is to make things right and do things right by our customers, Cross said. Customer loyalty is the cornerstone of the business, with regulars coming back for repairs whenever they are in need and passing along good reviews of the store by word of mouth. “I really appreciate our customers and their sincere loyalty, Cross said.

Second-generation owners David and Danny Astobiza’s parents opened the first European Comfort Shoe Store in 1990 with a focus on shoes that promote foot health. That was a new concept at the time, but it was just what customers in Davis were looking for when Sole Desire Shoes opened here in 2011. Michele Pellagrini, director of marketing for the store, said, “We are so honored to

All Things Right & Relevant
All Things Right & Relevant, known colloquially as “R&R, remains relevant to the Davis community in so many ways, even as it approaches its 25th anniversary this December. The consignment store opened in 1992 on East Eighth Street and relocated to larger quarters on Spafford Drive in the spring of 2012. It’s been a go-to shopping destination for folks of all ages — families, college students, young professionals on a budget. Shoppers know they’ll not only get a great bargain on a gently used article of clothing, piece of jewelry or household item, they’re also helping 10 Yolo County mental-health agencies that receive the store’s proceeds. But shoppers and consignors might be
surprised to know that the business employs mental-health clients. “We thought we would be a stepping stone for mental-health clients — we would train them and they would go on to other things, said co-founder Ruth Shumway, a member of the Friends of Allied Nonprofits board that runs the store. “Instead, we have been steady careers for, on average, 18 mental-health clients, who are involved with sales, merchandising, computer input and even managerial tasks. What would Shumway say to folks to voted for R&R? “They’re very wise, very appreciated, she said. “The reason they’re wise is that their dollar goes for product but also as a benefit to mental health.

The Odd Fellows Hall Best Event Venue
With two halls, a commercial-grade kitchen, dance floor and audio/video system, the Odd Fellows Hall has once again been voted best rental venue by readers of The Davis Enterprise. “Thank you for voting us best rental venue for our third year in a row! We truly appreciate your business! said Allison Vickrey, operations manager. Located at 415 Second St. in downtown Davis, the hall offers a capacity of up to 320 and is used for receptions, fundraisers, concerts, dinners, conferences, trade shows, meetings, weddings and more. The building is run by the Odd Fellows, a fraternal order with roots in England, who have been in the Davis area since 1870. The hall was built in the 1950s and underwent an extensive remodel between 2005 and 2012.
Vickrey said the business recently expanded its in-house catering department to accommodate offsite caterings and obtained a catering liquor license for bar services at offsite events. The Odd Fellows began renting space on a small scale in the 1980s, but expanded its appeal and availability in 2005 after remodeling the Lower Hall — the first of the two banquet rooms. The Upper Hall renovations were completed in 2012. Rental revenue supports charitable work in the community. “The rich history of the Odd Fellows in Davis makes our building a unique location for hosting special events, Vickrey said. Last year came the addition of The Lounge — two doors down from the hall — which is an intimate bar and cocktail lounge available for private rentals, as well as an unusual venue for small dinner and wine parties.

The Pence Gallery – a longtime landmark in downtown Davis – was picked as Best Gallery in this year’s Readers’ Choice balloting. Located in the heart of downtown Davis at 212 D St., the Pence opened in 1976, and went through a remodeling 2005. “We hit our 40th anniversary last year, and we reached 21,000 people — the highest ever — which we served through our gallery visits, workshops, events and outreach, says gallery director Natalie Nelson. “The Pence welcomes locals and visitors to explore the creativity of local and regional artists. We are a nonprofit educational art space, and we welcome you to shop in our gift shop, take a class, or delve into a new
type of exhibit or art form. Nelson said she thinks people might be surprised by the diversity of programs going on at the Pence — from yoga to presentations by the Stories on Stage series, to youth programs. “Thank you to our community, you have supported us from the start! Art serves to connect people of all ages to each other, she says. “We hope that you will come in soon to visit us! The Pence Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and also is open for the Second Friday ArtAbout reception from 6 to 9 p.m. For information about exhibits, classes or renting the gallery for special events, go to www. pencegallery.org or call 530-758-3370.

She is proud when a customer comes in looking for a particular book and Alzada or a staff member can interact with the person to either find that book or find one that will please the customer just as much. Her experience with The Avid Reader
Active has been more challenging. She knew she wanted to fill the niches of a toy store, a science store and a card store that had closed downtown. Ordering from dozens of sales representatives and thousands of choices led to a store full of items that pleased her and happily pleased folks who shop there. Surprised? Yes. Appreciative. You bet. Alzada says that connection with her customers makes coming to work in her two “cool stores on Second Street a pleasure.

Asked to sum up his business, Ken Bradford described Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board as “The Friendly Experts: We’re Serious About Your Fun!” The shop has a long history in Davis, starting with staff, equipment and clients from two older Davis businesses: Ski Racquet (since 1974) and Bike Surgeons (since 1980). Ken’s Bike & Ski officially began in 1988. “We continue to grow,” Bradford said, “with major expansions in 1997-98 and 2004-05,” with the name updated in 2011-12.
Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board at 650 G St. is proud to be a strong local employer. “Many staffers have been here 10 years or more,” Bradford said. “There are only a few university students on staff — we have ‘real jobs’ with real benefits like health insurance, paid vacation, matching IRA contributions and more.” And they also have a large selection of bicycle, snowboard and ski gear, plus a staff devoted to customer service. “We do our best every day, to earn and keep your trust,” Bradford said. For more information about Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board, call 530-758-3223 or visit www.bikeskiboard.com.

By Enterprise staff In 1998, Aziz Fattahi decided to close his car repair business and open a bakery. Within a few months, the self-taught baker was earning a profit at his tiny shop near the Southern Pacific Depot in downtown Davis, and many an Amtrak traveler was beginning the train trip with a sticky bun, scone or large slice of pizza from Village Bakery. Soon, Fattahi was not only serving customers directly, but his ciabatta, focaccia
and other breads were showing up at restaurants across Davis and in Sacramento and San Francisco. In 2005, he moved the bakery to a larger location and four years later, he opened a restaurant in a centuryold house at Fourth and G streets. Manager Raul Cruz credits Fattahi’s bread recipes, the unique brick ovens and the practice of going light on sauce to bring out the flavor of the crust and the local vegetables and toppings as reasons for the popularity of the food.

For more than a century, customers have been turning to First Northern Bank. “First Northern Bank was established in 1910 in Dixon, and has remained faithful to its roots as an institution formed to address specific personalized needs,” said vice president Bianca Filak, financial services manager of the Davis branch. “Our corporate offices and main branch remain in Dixon, and the bank has added eight additional full-service branches located in Davis, Winters, Roseville, Auburn, West Sacramento, Vacaville, Fairfield and Woodland. First Northern offers a wide range of SBA, real estate, commercial, agribusiness and consumer loans, as well as a full array of non-FDIC insured investment and brokerage

Anne Marie knows there are many shops that specialize in sandwiches in Davis and wants to say, “Thank you to our loyal customers for voting us best sandwich. Without you, it would not be possible. She hopes that customers who visit the store will sense that extended family and feel like they’re coming home. In case you didn’t know, Zia’s also caters, so their homemade specialties can appear at your front door.
Anne Marie and Kevin Crilly opened Zia’s Deli in Davis in 1995, fulfilling their dream to follow in the footsteps of Anne Marie’s dad and grandfather, who were both business owners. Anne learned her deli skills at her father’s side and that family tradition has moved east from San Francisco to Davis, where all of Anne Marie and Kevin’s children have spent time working at Zia’s — both in Davis and at their Sacramento store.

Owner Anita Long opened her first Woodland antique store almost a quartercentury ago and the secret of her success was made clear by a recent first-time customer who said simply, “You make us feel so welcome. Anita loves how the Woodland antique stores support each other and she tries to make everyone who comes in to The House Dresser feel like family. She knows many of
her regulars by name and some just stop in to talk about what’s happening with the people in their lives. Children are welcome in The House Dresser and she even has a table where they can do artwork and read. Anita stresses using and displaying antiques so that they don’t collect dust in storage. She loves to show people how to blend one or two sentimental favorites from their collection, or hers, with new items to keep old memories alive while creating new ones.

YoloBerry Yogurt Best Yogurt Enterprise staff YoloBerry Yogurt’s location has remained the same since its opening in 2008. The old house across from Central Park has proved to be an “ideal atmosphere,” in owner Lee Pflugrath’s words. After serving their yogurt or sorbet and picking from the 101 toppings YoloBerry offers, customers can eat and chat at the tables inside or move to the grass, chairs and benches in the front yard on C Street.
When YoloBerry first appeared in the Readers’ Choice balloting in 2010 it was in the “Best Dessert” class. As more and more frozen yogurt shacks opened around town and the chilly treat became a separate category, YoloBerry held its own. This year, its “Best Yogurt” distinction marks eight years as Enterprise readers’ favorite. “We truly appreciate your loyalty,” Pflugrath said. “You are the reason we love YoloBerry.”
