He and his wife, Christie, own Crème de la Crème, a European gift and home accents store in downtown Davis. After several years as a general manager of a local property management company, Zamora came to a juncture in his life. He recalls the time when watching a replay of the 2005 commencement address by Steve Jobs at Stanford. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life,” Jobs said. With that, he went to the courthouse and applied for a business license to start Z1 Properties. The tough part was that he couldn’t bring any of his previous clients. He started anew, with a new business model for a boutique property management company focusing on premier homes and premier clients. “You’re my tenant, I treat you like family. Any inconvenience, we’re on it,” Zamora said. When a client moves to Davis and feels the need to buy a home, Zamora prefers a

different approach. “Enjoy the neighborhood. Davis is a wonderful community. Rent for a year and see where your friends hang out. Discover Davis and Yolo, where your kids go to school, where your kids’ friendships are,” Zamora said. “When you find the opportunity to buy we’re going to jump on it.” Z1 staff takes care of the cleaning and finding a new client for the rental. “You do things like this and you take care of someone, folks hear. Now they call me,” Zamora said. “I love turning a tenant into a homeowner. It’s a thrill.” For one, he knows how they treat their homes and that they’ll be a great addition to the neighborhood. Word gets around. When Zamora learned that Z1 Properties was voted best property management company this year, “It filled my heart. What great way to say thank you.” “For just a 5-year-old company and truly believing in what we do, the way we treat our clients, the way we respond, it matters,” Zamora said. “Of course, we are grateful. It comes complete with a commercial-grade kitchen, a dance floor and an audio/video system. “It offers an in-house catering department, which streamlines planning for special events and allows customers to customize their events right on-site,” said Allison Vickrey, who handles lodge rentals. The building is run by the Odd Fellows, a fraternal order with roots in England, who have been in the Davis area since 1870. The hall was built in 1955 and underwent an extensive remodel between 2005 and 2012.

The Odd Fellows began renting space on a small scale in the 1980s, but expanded its appeal and availability in 2005 after remodeling the Lower Hall — the first of the two banquet rooms. The Upper Hall renovations were completed in 2012. Rental revenue supports charitable work in the community. “The rich history of the Odd Fellows in Davis makes our building a unique location for hosting special events,” Vickrey said. “This year The Lodge plans to open The Lounge, two doors down from our current location on Second Street. The Lounge will be an intimate bar and cocktail lounge available for private rentals, and will offer a unique venue for small dinner and wine parties,” Vickrey said.

De Vere’s Irish Pub opened in Davis in late 2011 and has been popular with locals ever since. Co-owner Henry de Vere White believes part of the pub’s popularity comes from the environment. “We offer our guests a comfortable home-away-from-home to enjoy,” de Vere White said. “A pub is all about the people in it, from our staff to our guests, the

The Turkovich family are farmers in this county starting three generations ago. A Davis fixture since 2003, Physical Edge has been voted the city’s best provider of physical therapy by readers of The Davis Enterprise. Formerly located on Lake Boulevard in West Davis, Physical Edge moved to Drew Avenue in South Davis in 2006, bringing its entire staff together and providing owners Mathew and Marianne Moore — Davis residents since childhood — an opportunity to expand their services. Currently, the business comprises six physical therapists, a physical therapy assistant, a chiropractor and fitness staff. “We rehabilitate using a functional movement model,” says Marianne Moore. “The system promotes collaboration between

performance and rehabilitation professionals through the use of two tools — the Functional Movement Screen and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment. “Both tools evaluate movement but are separated by a clear distinct marker. That marker is pain. If movement produces pain, the individual would be sent through SFMA. If pain is not present, then the FMS is the appropriate tool, which is used primarily by personal trainers and strength coaches.” Physical Edge also prides itself on being a teaching facility, working with several universities to provide 12-week clinical instruction and mentorship programs to physical therapy students.
