Academic Improvement Center is the longest-operating tutoring center in Davis. The center provides academic support for students of all abilities, with help individually tailored to the needs of each student. The learning center does not hire employees. All tutoring is done by owners Mike and Terri Leonard who cover all math, science, Spanish, English and social science courses. It’s academic: Mike earned a Ph.D. in geophysics from UC Berkeley. Terri earned her M.D. from UC Davis. Both Mike and Terri also earned California state teaching credentials in math and science from UC Berkeley and have experience teaching in the public school system. They have four children of their own — ages 6 to 10.

Academic Improvement Center is the longest-operating tutoring center in Davis. The center provides academic support for students of all abilities, with help individually tailored to the needs of each student. The learning center does not hire employees. All tutoring is done by owners Mike and Terri Leonard who cover all math, science, Spanish, English and social science courses. It’s academic: Mike earned a Ph.D. in geophysics from UC Berkeley. Terri earned her M.D. from UC Davis. Both Mike and Terri also earned California state teaching credentials in math and science from UC Berkeley and have experience teaching in the public school system. They have four children of their own — ages 6 to 10.

The Root of Happiness was founded in 2012 with the opening of Tyler Blythe and Travis Lowin’s first location in Rancho Cordova. Conceived of a passion for ethnobotany and cultural use of plants, the goal of Root of Happiness Kava is to create a healthy and relaxing atmosphere for adults to enjoy kava and learn about the history of this tradition. After a year of success with their first location, owners set their sights on Davis. This new bar would maintain the same quality standards set by their first location, while offering a new layout and an upstairs lounge. “We think that the most surprising thing about our kava bars is the vibe and the atmosphere that kava fosters,” owners said. “In contrast to traditional bars and clubs, adults are able to relax and unwind while drinking kava, yet remain mentally focused and clear.” “We want readers to know that there is an alternative to traditional bars and clubs.
