Adventure Awaits at the 105th annual Picnic Day BY TANYA PEREZ Enterprise staff writer
It’s possible that Davis long-timers have become immune to the wonder that is Picnic Day, the signature event at UC Davis. They may take for granted the expansive open house that showcases so many aspects of the university, not realizing how rare it is for students — yes, students! — to be able to pull off such an event. Yet, since 1909, this family-friendly day of fun and celebration has been happening all over campus on a spring day in April. On Saturday, April 13, the 105th annual Picnic Day will again start with an opening ceremony for the parade at 9:30 a.m. and end with battling marching bands, some time around 10 p.m. The full schedule of events can be found starting on page 5 of this special edition. This year’s theme is “Adventure Awaits,” which the Picnic Day board of directors believes accurately sums up the “day of exploration, opportunity and discovery with more than 200 events to experience and learn from.” The theme also is meant to represent the adventure “that every past, current and future UC Davis student experiences as they pursue their academic and personal goals throughout their college years.” Another tradition of Picnic Day is to honor Davisaffiliated individuals as the parade marshals. This year, the board of directors chose Sarah Stewart, a professor in the department of earth and planetary sciences who won the MacArthur “Genius” Fellow grant in October. Read

more about Stewart and her impressive accomplishments on Page 4. Contributing to the celebration, Picnic Day offers hundreds of UCD-related attractions, including animals, live music, food and interactive demonstrations all across campus. When the weather is just right — currently looking like a lovely 75 degrees and sunny on Saturday — as many as 100,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members attend. This long-standing campus tradition began when the University Farm — then an offshoot of UC Berkeley — invited the surrounding community to view its new dairy barn. Two thousand people attended, bringing picnics to complement the coffee, cream and sugar provided by the university. Following the success of the 1909 picnic, the faculty of the University Farm continued to plan and sponsor the event until a student committee took over the task in 1912. Picnic Day attendance
began to grow by leaps and bounds. In 1915, 5,000 people gathered to enjoy the picnicking and square dancing at the University Farm. The next year, this figure tripled to 15,000, far outnumbering the 314 students hosting the event. This increase in attendance was in large part due to Molly, a dairy cow who performed a record 97-hour cow-walk from Davis to Berkeley to publicize the event. A few years later, Molly’s son, Pete, carried on the traditional walk to Berkeley, following in his mother’s footsteps. By 1925, Picnic Day had grown to such an extent that the student committee felt it necessary to begin planning and organizing the event six weeks in advance. In the years since, the event has expanded to the point that preparations begin the previous June and are handled by the Picnic Day student board of directors, a unit of the Associated Students of UCD. To help Picnic Day
continue for another 105 or more years, consider contributing to the Friends
of the Picnic Day Endowment. According to the Picnic Day website (picnicday. ucdavis.edu), the endowment was established eight years ago. “In May 2011, Tom and Meg Stallard, both former Picnic Day board members, were honored to receive the UC Davis Foundation’s Charles Soderquist Award, which is given in recognition of volunteer leadership and support of philanthropy at UC Davis,” the website says. “The Soderquist Award comes with a $5,000 prize, which recipients designate to the university program of their choosing. Tom and Meg chose to use the prize
to establish the Friends of Picnic Day Endowment.” The Stallards hope the endowment “will help refocus the event on its original purpose — to provide a day of fun that unites campus and community and showcases the many contributions that UC Davis is making in the region, across the country, and around the world.” To donate to Picnic Day, visit https://picnicday.uc davis.edu/give-to-picnicday/. — The UC Davis Picnic Day Committee contributed to this story. Enterprise correspondent UC Davis professor Sarah Stewart will have more duties than watching the Doxie Derby during this year’s Picnic Day. Stewart, who recently won a MacArthur “Genius” grant, was chosen to be the Picnic Day parade marshal. “I’m like a cheerleader of the day,” said Stewart, who was chosen by the Picnic Day planning committee. This year’s theme for the completely student-run event is a good match for the professor: “Adventure Awaits.” Stewart believes that the topic of adventure is perfect for her field of study. As a professor and researcher in the department of Earth and planetary sciences at UCD, Stewart explores the formation of planets and the moon. “The way my science goes, there is always a daily adventure of discovering something new, and at Picnic Day you can show up and discover something new every year,” Stewart said. Some of the theories that she plans to explore may be controversial, she believes,

One of these recently published theories details the concept that the moon may have been formed from the Earth. “My main research area of planet formation and understanding extreme events, like giant impacts, through laboratory experiments, is a very small area, meaning that there aren’t very many people in the world that do these kinds of experiments,” she said. Stewart was chosen for the prestigious grant — one of the highest awards offered in her field as there
is no Nobel prize — after lengthy consideration and interviews with many people in her life. The grant is unique in its lack of restrictions and reporting that is generally required to receive funding. Stewart is excited to have such freedom to explore and experiment in her field. As for Picnic Day, Stewart looks forward to leading the parade, bringing her daughter with her. She is excited to finally see the Doxie Derby, as she has never been early enough to see it, but she managed to secure a
Odd Fellows bring back Picnic Day breakfast Enterprise staff The general public is invited to attend the popular “Picnic Day Pancake Breakfast” at Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday morning, April 13. Breakfast is served from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, juice and sliced oranges.
The cost is $5 per person (reflecting prices from a generation ago), and kids under 5 get breakfast for free. Tickets will be available at the door. The hall is at 415 Second St. in downtown Davis, right on the Picnic Day parade route. This Odd Fellows pancake breakfast is a Davis family
tradition that began in the 1950s and has been offered to the public every year for more than 60 years. The Picnic Day Pancake Breakfast Committee is chaired by Holly Bishop and Nicholas Lundgren, with Kathy Hemness as head cook. “The magic of Picnic Day begins at the Pancake
Breakfast,” Bishop said. “Bring the family and come for breakfast, and then walk outside and stay for the Picnic Day Parade. What a great way to spend Picnic Day morning.” For information about the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, visit the Lodge website at www.davislodge.org.
