UC Davis Picnic Day

APRIL 2022

Restoring a tradition: Picnic day returns after two years By Caleb Hampton Enterprise staff writer

For the first time since 2019, UC Davis will host Picnic Day as an in-person on-campus event — the only way to truly observe a tradition that’s all about getting outside and spending time with other people. The first Picnic Day was held in 1909 when Davis’ University Farm invited community members to check out its new dairy barn. An estimated two thousand people went, bringing picnic lunches, and the tradition was born. Since then, the event has evolved to encompass a parade, open house, fair, entertainment, dozens of activities — and, yes, usually a bit of partying. The event also serves as an occasion for the campus and wider community to come together. Before the pandemic, Picnic Day routinely attracted

(Picnic Day was celebrated virtually in 2020 and 2021.) This year’s Picnic Day, which

celebrates the theme “Rediscovering Tomorrow,” will be the 108th.

“The excitement generated by this special day reminds us of the bond UC Davis shares with the community,” UC Davis chancellor Gary S. May said in his Enterprise column this month. “This year will feel like a rebirth.” Charged with rekindling the tradition is a group of several dozen students who comprise the Picnic Day Board. In a normal year, organizing Picnic Day, one of the largest student-run events in the nation, is a complicated — and collaborative — undertaking. “There are so many intricate details,” said Picnic Day co-chair Jesse Goodman, a second-year economics major. Organizing it after a two-year interruption is more challenging still. “It’s a lot different this year,” said Picnic Day publicity director Alexis Tornero. The fourth-year managerial economics major is one of just three students on the

C4 THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE 71-member Picnic Day Board who has previously helped organize an in-person Picnic Day. Divided into 15 teams, the board has spent months putting together various aspects of Picnic Day, which range from animal events to open house exhibits to the parade and more. “It’s a lot of external communication,” Tornero said, referring to extensive role community members play in popular events like the Doxie Derby, where mini-dachshunds race each other across the floor of the University Credit Union Center (formerly called the Pavilion). In past years, participants had Picnic Day inked in as an integral part of their calendar. After going almost three years without a Picnic Day, that was no longer the case. Student organizers needed to conduct more outreach than usual to track down previous participants and find new ones, a task that proved easier said than done. “A lot of people aren’t in the same positions,” Tornero said. “We try to contact participants and we’re told, ‘Sorry, this person no

UC Davis Picnic Day longer works here.’” With the big day approaching, students from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, which organizes the Doxie Derby, told the Picnic Day Board they were running short on dachshunds. Participants for the frisbee dog event, hosted by the Canine Medicine Club, were also lacking. The organizers pitched in with recruitment and, in the end, Tornero and Goodman said they were excited to be able to offer a full slate of events, even if some might be slightly smaller than in previous years. This year’s events include a horse polo exhibition match (Horse Barn Arena at 1 p.m.), Fashion and Design Society’s student fashion show (Cruess Hall Annex at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.), Battle of the Bands (Mrak Hall Lawn from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.), chemistry show (Peter A. Rock Hall at 10 a.m.), cockroach races (Briggs Hall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), art activities and exhibitions (Manetti Shrem Museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), jazz performances (Anne E. Pitzer Center Recital Hall

at 12 p.m.) and many other attractions. The parade (the Quad at 10:30 a.m.) lineup features the UC Davis Marching DR. NAM Band, drummers TRAN from Bakuhatsu Picnic Day Taiko Dan, draft Parade Marshal horses, UC Davis Fire Department, U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, McClatchy High School Dance Team, International House, Northern California DeLorean Motor Club and dozens of other groups. Dr. Nam K. Tran, Professor and Senior Director of Clinical Pathology at UC Davis Health, was chosen as this year’s Picnic Day parade marshal. Tran was one of the main architects of Healthy Davis Together’s COVID-19 testing strategy and a member of the California COVID-19 Testing Task Force. “I am proud to share this day with students, staff, faculty, and members of our Davis

community,” he said. In the past, public safety at Picnic Day has proven to be a challenge, with the conduct of both attendees and police officers having come under scrutiny. This year, the UC Davis Police Department will roll out a tiered approach to security, with uniformed police offers, security officers, student police cadets and Aggie Hosts all playing a role. “In past years, we relied pretty much solely on police officers,” said UC Davis Police Chief Joseph Farrow. “This is our new approach. Not every job needs to be done by a police officer.” A big part of providing security for Picnic Day, Farrow said, is directing traffic, getting people in and out in an orderly fashion, and reuniting lost parents and children. Farrow described uniformed police as a “last resort” for this year’s event, with unarmed security personnel playing a larger part during the day and the police presence on campus scaling up in the evening. “We will try to keep the campus as safe as possible

APRIL 2022 without us [police] becoming a focal point,” Farrow said. The Davis Police Department will also be out on Picnic Day, coordinating with downtown businesses where crowds typically spill over from campus for lunch, dinner and afterwards. Campus police generally do not leave campus and Davis police don’t enter it, but both will be available to assist each other if necessary, Farrow said. “It’s important to us that Picnic Day remain a community and family friendly event and your safety and campus security are our utmost priorities,” Farrow and Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said in a joint statement. “When off campus, the same laws apply as any other day.” As the day approached, Picnic Day organizers said they observed growing anticipation fellow students, especially those who enrolled at UC Davis during the pandemic and have yet to experience Picnic Day. “I think this year is gonna feel a little more special,” Tornero said.

UC Davis Picnic Day

APRIL 2022 C15

UC Davis Picnic Day Fashion Show returns in-person Special to The Enterprise Vibrant fashion created by design students returns to the UC Davis campus on Picnic Day when the Fashion and Design Society (FADS) takes their annual fashion show outdoors. “Prism,” this year’s show, will be staged at the new Cruess Hall Makerspace Courtyard on April 23 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The show will feature fashion created and executed by 11 Department of Design undergraduate students in the Signature Collections course. “This year we celebrate our return to a live event, our first since 2019,” said Gozde Goncu-Berk, assistant professor of design. “This year’s collections will display a wide range of concepts — from sustainability, minimalism, craftsmanship to cultural diversity — merged into aesthetic qualities of more than 30 outfits.” Ingrid Yeung, president of FADS, said she is pleased to return to an in-person event. “We wanted to showcase the new Department of Design spaces and move

the event outdoors to be a visible part of Picnic Day,” said Yeung. In addition to the fashion show, the audience will be invited inside the new Cruess Hall Makerspace to view an exhibition highlighting research, renderings and creation of each collection. A limited number of discounted tickets at $10 are on sale through April 16. Thereafter, tickets are $12 for general admission. Tickets may be purchased in person at the UC Davis Ticket Office, located on the north side of Aggie Stadium, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, by phone 530-752-2471 during the same hours, or online at design.ucdavis.edu. The Cruess Hall exhibition will be open to all Picnic Day participants at 2 p.m. after the second show. A show video will be available later in the day on the FADS website https://fadsatucd.org/ fashion-show-2022. The Department of Design is part of the UC Davis College of Letters and Science.
