For the last 25 years, Buddhist monks have brought their culture and teachings to Placerville on their annual fundraising tour in the U.S. “We, at Placerville Friends of Tibet, are grateful for the support of the community, their interest in the culture, art, teachings and the kindness of the monks,” shared Placerville Friends of Tibet tour organizer Wendy Wood.

“The monks continue to make an impact on the area and, for that, we are grateful.”

After two years of training, recently appointed El Dorado County Treasurer-Tax Collector Sean M. Coppola has taken on his new role.

Coppola replaces Karen Coleman, who retired after nearly seven years in the SEAN COPPOLA elected position. He was appointed on Dec. 2 by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors to take the leadership role effective Dec. 27 and serve out her term, which ends Jan. 2, 2027. The filing period is now open to get on the June 2026 ballot for a full, four-year term.

A tearful and bittersweet key ceremony was held Nov. 22, 2025, for 2021 Caldor Fire survivors Mac McNeil and Cathie Adams of Grizzly Flat, celebrating the efforts of all who contributed to the new home built for the couple.

The project, years in the making, was a collaborative effort between nonprofit and community groups and local leaders.

Eugene Emerald Larsen Sept. 4, 1931 – Nov. 19, 2025

Roberta “Bertie” F. Larsen July 24, 1930 – Nov. 6, 2025

In Loving memory of Gene and Bertie. They were beloved parents, grandparents and great grandparents. They met as teenagers and married when he was 19 and she was 20. They lived amazing lives in Camino for 75 years and passed away within days of each other at 94 and 95 years old. Farming was their goal for all those years along with truck driving and school bus driving. They raised two sons Larry and Ray and enjoyed their family always. Gene served on the board of EID, Placerville Fruit Growers and as a school board member. The community and their friends wherever they went as travelers brought joy to both, never knowing a stranger.

Gene and Bertie will be greatly missed by their loving family and friends. They were laid to rest together in their Camino Cemetery in a family service. A Celebration of Life will be held in Larsen Park in May.

Virner L. Nickell

Oct. 1, 1942 – Dec. 20, 2025

Virner L. Nickell, 83, passed peacefully in his sleep, December 20th, 2025. Born in 1942, Virn spent his life in the Sierra Nevada foothills, as a general contractor and avid racing fan. Survived by his loving wife, Lue, of 59 years, daughter Corina, son-in-law Tim, 3 granddaughters, a grandson-in-law and 2 great grandchildren. He loved racing cars with his daughter and sharing his passions with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virn was well known for his tradesmen skills within his community and wellloved for his good humor by everyone he met. An informal memorial was held Saturday, Jan. 3. Please refrain from reaching out to Lue at this time. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Ranch animal sanctuary (www.AtTheRanch.org) in Virn’s name.

Kay Marie Kilbourne

June 24,1957 – Nov 26, 2025

Kay Marie Kilbourne passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, in her Placerville home following her courageous and graceful twoyear battle with glioblastoma brain cancer at the age of 68.

Kay was born in Astoria, Oregon, to parents Patricia and Darrell Greenlee.

The family relocated to West Linn, OR, and Kay attended Sunset Primary School, West Linn High School, and studied piano at Marylhurst School.

After high school, Kay moved to Germany with her then-husband, who was in the Air Force. She later settled in the Sacramento area, where she met her husband, Rob. Kay and her family moved to Placerville in 1995, where she lived the remainder of her life. She was employed as a law office manager and legal secretary for most of her career, primarily in the field of workers’ compensation law, and enjoyed helping clients with their legal matters.

Kay was devoted to her family and friends. She served as a Girl Scout troop leader, middle school cheerleading coach, and late-night project creator.

Kay was unfailingly kind. She was exceptionally resilient in her mindset and organized in her daily life, making those around her feel well taken care of and supported unconditionally. She especially loved to show up for and support her children and grandchildren. Whenever possible, she’d enthusiastically attend performances, games, or Grandparents Day. Kay also had deep and lasting friendships throughout her adulthood, some of whom affectionately are referred to as “the coven.”

Throughout her life, she cherished countless joyful and laughter-filled “coven” and family gatherings.

Kay was a lifelong lover of horses and avid horseback rider, taking many trail rides, camping, and packing trips over the years. Later in life, she loved to go on bike rides with her husband, Rob. Quick-witted and sharp, she was a formidable opponent for any card or board game. She was a voracious reader throughout her life, enjoying fantasy and science fiction novels in particular.

Kay was preceded in death by her infant son, Jonathan; mother, Patricia; and father, Darrell. Kay is survived by her husband of thirty-eight years, Rob; children: Patricia Noel Escobar and Willa Amanda Kilbourne; her daughter-in-law, Laina Yoswein; her three grandchildren: Kaylee Staggers, Hunter Staggers, and Tyler Escobar; her brothers: Doug Greenlee, Gary Greenlee (Debbie), and Jeff Greenlee; brother-in-law, Pete Kilbourne (Kathryn); and many nieces and nephews and their children.

She also leaves behind her dog, Kami, and horse, Dixie.

A remembrance and celebration of life is scheduled for January 10th, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Sierra Vista Winery at 4560 Cabernet Way in Placerville. Internment will take place at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga at a later date.

Donations in her honor are welcome to be made to the Glioblastoma Foundation or to UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, where Kay received compassionate and excellent care.

Kathleen “Kay” Murdock Aug. 17, 1927 – Dec. 10, 2025

In loving memory of Kathleen “Kay” Murdock.

She passed away peacefully at Marshall Hospital surrounded by family, on December 10, 2025 at the age of 98. Kay was born in Los Angeles, CA to Gladys and Ernest King.

Having moved to Sacramento in 1935, Kay attended school and graduated from Sacramento High School in1945. She attended U. C. Berkeley and graduated in 1949. She was a member of Delta Zeta National Sorority. She remembers her college days living in the Delta Zeta House with great affection.

Kay married Walter Adam in 1949, right after they graduated from Berkeley. They had two girls, Cheryl and Susan. After living in southern California (Long Beach and Hermosa Beach) for many years, Kay and Walt retired to Placerville in 1981 and built their own home. Kay became active with the El Dorado County Historical Society and both museums, the El Dorado County Museum and the Fountain & Tallman Museum.

She was a docent for 37 years, including doing all the volunteers scheduling. She said she enjoyed every minute promoting our great history to visitors from around the world! Kay was also active in Placerville Shakespeare Club, Native Daughters of the Golden West and Eastern Star where she met Walter Murdock. Kay and Walt were Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron in 1996. She was also in charge of the Elder Hostel Program in Placerville for several years.

Kay is survived by her daughters Susan Adam, Cheryl Johnson and fiancé Craig White, granddaughter Shawna Murawski and husband Nathen Murawski, and great grandson Asher Murawski. She was the most loving and wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and wife. Kay will be greatly missed by family, many friends and her dear neighbors.

She said “I have lived a long and happy life!”

Martha Rosalie “Sally” Falk Pearce May 28, 1938 – Dec. 19, 2025

Sally Pearce, 87, of El Dorado Hills, California, passed away on December 19, 2025, in Placerville, California, after being briefly hospitalized for an illness.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Sally was adopted by her parents, Harry N. and Elizabeth M. Falk. She and her brother Steve joined their sister Antonie in Glenview, Illinois.

When she was a young teen, the family moved to Southern California where Sally attended Sacred Heart Academy and Chadwick School.

She and her late former husband, Paul Pearce, raised their family in Orange County, California.

Sally took up rock climbing when she was in her thirties. After training in Yosemite, she summited Half Dome via the Snake Dike route and climbed often in Tahquitz and Joshua Tree. For a decade, she ran a retail mountaineering business in Laguna Beach, California. Sally and her partner, Farley, moved north to the Placerville area in the early 1980s and their lovely home, full of art and warmth, was a favorite destination for many traveling friends and family.

A stunning genealogy discovery in recent years dramatically expanded Sally’s family, bringing three beloved ‘new’ siblings into her life: twins Diana and the late Diane, along with another brother, Jerome, and many treasured new nieces and nephews.

Playful, irreverent, and generous, Sally made every occasion lighthearted and memorable. Kids in town may have seen her drive by the school bus in her Mini Cooper wearing Groucho glasses, which she kept handy in the center console. She entertained us with stories of her Jeep trips to the Rubicon Trail where you could spot her tent by the flamingo out front and the rubber chicken on the clothesline.

Sally’s legendary excursions with her First, Second and Third Wives Club and her annual trips to Mexico were frequent highlights. She loved a good pun and a costume party and we expect many photos of her to surface, no doubt to the occasional amused chagrin of her children. Above all, she loved to laugh.

Sally is survived by her children, Cynthia Pearce, Keith (Tress) Pearce and Barbara Pearce; sister, Diana Granlund; sister-in-law, Barbara Feick (late James); her brothers, Stephen (Sue) Falk and Jerome (Lynne) Saluzzo; her grandchildren, Grant (Katie) Pearce, Drew Pearce, Austin Pearce, Jonathon Stetter and Nicholas (Laura) Stetter; five greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her partner, Farley F. Rice; her sisters, Antonie Falk and Diane Lanctot; and her former husband, Paul G. Pearce.

She leaves behind a treasured circle of devoted friends who share our heartbreak and our solace in the memories we have of this remarkable, spirited, one-of-a-kind woman.

A celebration of Sally’s life will take place in the spring.

Volunteers needed to count homeless News release

Volunteers are needed on Jan. 29 to assist with the 2026 Point In Time count. The PIT count is a federally required, nation-wide count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night during the last ten days in January.

Each count is planned, coordinated and carried out locally. Help from the community is important in capturing this crucial community data.

The community depends on teams of volunteers to canvas the community and ensure that those experiencing homelessness are counted. No prior experience is necessary; training will be provided and volunteers will work in pairs or small groups.

California homeowners could qualify for grants for new roofs and fire safety Levi Sumagaysay Cal Matters

Some homeowners in areas of California with high wildfire risk could eventually get money for new roofs or to build fire-resistant zones around their properties under a new state law that goes into effect today.

The Safe Homes grant program is designed to help lowand middle-income homeowners with fire mitigation. People who qualify could use grants to create 5-foot ember-resistant zones around properties, also known as Zone Zero, as required by law in some areas. The program will also contribute toward costs for fire-safe roofs.

The state’s Insurance Department, which is responsible for implementing the program, is working out the details around eligibility, the amount of and the distribution of grants.

It is now developing an application portal that it hopes to have ready

by March, said Michael Soller, spokesperson for the department.

The insurance department will be handling all the details of the grants, said Mike Dayton, chief of staff of Assemblymember Lisa Calderon, the Los Angeles-area Democrat and chair of the Assembly Insurance Committee who wrote the law, and has so far secured $3 million in the state budget to get

the program started.

Soller said homeowners who have policies with admitted insurance carriers or the last-resort FAIR Plan and who live in highrisk areas will have to meet income limits set by the state housing department to be eligible for the grants, whose amounts have not been determined.

Communities, cities and counties with mitigation projects could also apply for grants.

He also said the insurance department plans to advocate for additional and ongoing funding for the program.

Another source of funding could be the federal government, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Soller said. But Gov. Gavin Newsom recently tried to meet with

FEMA to talk about disaster aid related to the Los Angeles County fires and was unsuccessful.

Also, two Californians in Congress have proposed legislation that would establish a federal grant program and tax credits for mitigation.

U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson, a Napa Democrat, and Doug LaMalfa, an Oroville Republican, have introduced their bill for the past two sessions, but it has not made it to a floor vote. Note: LaMalfa’s death was announced on Jan. 6.

The California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection recently extended the finalization of rules regarding Zone Zero buffers around properties to the first half of next year. The rules are expected to take effect for existing homes in 2029.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of Camron Lee, also known as Saroeun Chea, Tae Won Lee, Taewon Lee or “Major.” Lee allegedly fled prosecution for murder and other charges in Sacramento County.

The FBI and Sacramento Police Department are continuing their efforts to locate Lee and his two toddler children, Athena Lee, now 5, and Mateo Lee, now 3. Keep the fire burning

S

eems like yesterday that we were making New Year’s resolutions. Time flies by!

Since time goes by so quickly the first resolution we all might consider making is to savor the moment.

Every day is a gift and a GLENN MOLLETTE celebration. Savor your work, family, friends, entertainment, hobbies, church, meals, nature and every aspect of life. Don’t rush 2026 because it will be over in the blink of your eye.

Plan your holidays in advance for 2026. Let’s make the holidays count. Consider celebrating the holidays in 2026 on days other than the actual holiday dates. Families can only be one place at a time. Why not have your get togethers a week or even two before? Celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas at different times so you can include more people and different places. Give it a thought for each holiday and I believe you will have more unrushed friend and family gatherings.

Plan to create good memories in 2026. Too often we spend our time reflecting on mistakes, sickness, death and unfortunate things that happened in the past. Determine to do something as often as you can that will create a good memory for you and others who might be impacted.

Think about what you want to accomplish in 2026 and try. What do you have to lose? If you

That feeling, I don’t wish on anybody. Nothing is worse than feeling like nobody would care if you weren’t here or that they would trade you for somebody else in a heartbeat. it’s hard being blinded by insecurities, insufficiencies and comparison.

I envied being special. I couldn’t help but look at myself in the mirror and see everything wrong with myself. I felt undeserving of basic human needs like love, loyalty and confidence. I’m still in this. I haven’t gotten away from it.

It’s easy for me to look at the people around me who I love and see them as genuine perfection.

It’s harder when it’s your own face looking back at you. I believe beneath these superficial worries is fear. Fear that I will lose the people I care about because I’m not worthy, enough. Worried that someone will choose another over me.

I know one thing for sure; every one of us is beautifully unique. I know deep inside of myself

that I am beyond special. I am one of a kind. We all are.

In dark moments, it’s easy to look at another and see everything you are insufficient in. But we were built with an unimaginable amount of love.

Nobody is exactly the same. Meticulous care was put into every detail that makes you who you are — beautiful.

I am blinded right now, but not forever. One day when the clouds have parted and my heart will speak to me. I will finally be able to look beyond the fog and see that I am beautifully me — that no one is better at being me than me. In that moment, I will feel deep regret for allowing this blindfold to stop me from blessing the earth with my individuality.

I pray true sight finds you. Nothing is more breathtaking than someone who is blatantly themselves. I can assure you one thing; you are more beautiful than your eyes could ever imagine.

And, I promise you, everyone around you notices.

You might not yet, but one day the clouds will part for you.

EVs were to be the panacea to transportation, global warming (a fiction also created by leftist governments) and our allegedly dwindling supply of petroleum. Turns out that the leftist central planners were all wrong. Petroleum-powered vehicles are still 95% of the market, global warming is a complete fiction and our petroleum supplies are growing with many experts claiming we have at least a 500 year supply or more. Do you need more reasons why socialist/communist societies and governments fail?

Tesla makes remarkable cars and the stock is approaching $500. The Model S is beautiful and it drives wonderfully, but it still suffers from limited range and takes too long to refuel, never mind the lack of refueling stations. for quality products that do perform as good as the claims. Tesla will supply that 5% niche of EVs to the public that wants them and whose driving characteristics work well with an EV. It will also be successful with its robo-taxis and other unique markets. In fact, sales will grow as other EV makers fall by the wayside.

Why will this happen? Blame all the false promises made mostly by left-leaning scientists and politicians.

Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog reintroduced Julia Bonney Tahoe National Forest

Meet the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog. As its name suggests, this small frog is native to the Sierra Nevada. Unfortunately, this species has seen population declines due to the widespread introduction of nonnative trout, fungal disease and habitat loss.

SNYLF are currently listed as federally endangered and state threatened. To help this species recover, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Forest ServiceTahoe National Forest, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and San Francisco Zoo and Gardens have partnered on a multi-year project to reintroduce the frog to its native habitat within the western side of the Tahoe National Forest.

The area where frogs are being reintroduced was historically fishless and formerly contained a persistent SNYLF population. However, for decades, the area received plants of nonnative trout, which prey on early frog life stages. The fish plants stopped in the late 1990’s, but some nonnative fish remained.

To prepare the area for reintroduction of SNYLF to the area, CDFW removed the small population of remaining trout from 2020 to 2022. to prepare for a reintroduction of SNYLF.

Frogs were transported to their new homes in canisters surrounded by towels and ice packs.

Then, last fall, CDFW and TNF wildlife biologists collected about 200 SNYLF tadpoles from a nearby population on Tahoe National Forest land and transported them to the SF Zoo, where zoo staff raised the frogs to maturity.

Raising frogs at the zoo greatly increases young frogs’ chances of survival by eliminating natural threats and providing treatment for a widespread fungal pathogen, known as amphibian chytrid fungus.

And during the summer of 2025, the fully grown frogs were transported back to the forest and released in high alpine lakes.

How do you transport nearly 200 frogs into the backcountry?

Engage the power of partnership! Lucky for these frogs, a team of TNF, CDFW and SF Zoo staff were excited to be a part of the reintroduction and assisted in carrying the frogs to their new home.

Frogs were housed in individual tubs with air holes, then those tubs were placed inside bear-resistant food canisters for transport.

Keeping the frogs cool for the journey was a top priority, and the canisters were wrapped with towels, extra clothes, and ice packs to keep the temperature low inside backpacks. Upon arrival, staff released the frogs into several different lakes.

In the coming years, CDFW and TNF will continue to monitor this newly reestablished frog population. Future frog reintroductions at this site are planned, with the goal of boosting the population and increasing genetic diversity. The goal is to have this native species once again maintaining a self-sustaining population in its native habitat resulting in healthier forests and watersheds in public lands.

Set to enter year 11 under the Russell Motorsports Inc. banner, the El Dorado County Fairgrounds based Placerville Speedway has released its schedule of events for the 2026 season.

Since opening in 1965, the Placerville Speedway has been a favorite among fans throughout Northern California.

Well known for its steep banks, distinctive red clay, loyal fan base and extremely close action, the track is located just 40 minutes up the hill from the capital city of Sacramento.

The season starts off with a Test and Tune on March 7 followed by the opening point race on March 21. The 23rd annual Tribute to Al Hinds launches the first of 15 championship point races.

Points paying divisions will be comprised of Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Limited Late Models, Pure Stocks and Mini Trucks. The weekly action, as noted, opens on March 21 and concludes on Sept.

Off to the races — Placerville Speedway hosts exciting events all season long at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds. straight year Legends Weekend will occur at the Shootout as fans celebrate 61-years of racing in Old Hangtown.

The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour is primed to open its ninth season of action at Placerville Speedway during the April 4 Thrill on the Hill.

The Challenge Tour returns on May 30 for the second annual Davy Thomas Memorial as the event shifts to a Saturday date in 2026.

The final appearance by the SCCT 360s will occur on Saturday, July 18, with the Gold Pan Rampage as part of Western Sprint Tour Speedweek.

The annual Carnett Clash presented by Ford’s Only is back on Aug. 1. More details on the event

The Kubota High Limit Racing Winged 410 Sprint Cars make their third-ever Placerville appearance on Saturday, Aug. 22.

The Gold Rush Classic is sure to bring a starstudded field to the red clay after a thrilling show last season.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, the NARC 410 Sprint Cars will crown a series champion at Placerville Speedway during the Pay Dirt Showdown presented by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. It marks the lone NARC King of the West show of the season.

One of the more anticipated events each year returns with the annual Hangtown 100 set to commence in November. The USAC NOS Energy Drink

National Midgets will tackle the speedway for two exciting nights of competition on Nov. 13 & 14. For the initial time, Winged 360 Sprint Cars will be the companion division each night.

The colorful coupes of the Nor-Cal Dwarf Car Association make seven appearances this coming year. Dwarf Cars have a rich history at Placerville Speedway and will play a big part in the 61st season of racing.

The Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Cars are set to make a pair of stops on the red clay once again this year, with those dates occurring on March 28 and June 27.

Mom, son killed in Cameron Park home

A Cameron Park neighborhood’s peaceful façade was shattered on Aug. 21, 2025, when gunshots rang out and El Dorado County sheriff ’s officials confirmed a mother and her young son were dead.

The victims were identified as Marissa Herzog, 29, and her son Josiah. A second juvenile who resided in the home was later located safe.

Investigators identified Cal Fire law enforcement officer Darin McFarlin, 47, of Cameron Park as a person of interest. The suspect, Herzog’s boyfriend, was detained in Mono County without incident and booked into the El Dorado County Jail on Aug. 22, where he remains in custody without bail.

The criminal complaint filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office alleges McFarlin attacked Herzog in the bedroom of the Oakwood Road home the couple shared in Cameron

Park. After Herzog left the room and used her cellphone, McFarlin obtained the gun and “did unlawfully, and with malice aforethought, murder Marissa Herzog, a human being.”

Count 2 further alleges McFarlin shot and killed the juvenile boy to prevent testimony as the child was witness to a crime and Count 3 asserts the suspect attempted to murder the second child.

McFarlin was arraigned Aug. 25, 2025, facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder with special allegations that a firearm was used in the crimes. He also faces charges of domestic violence and child abuse.

If convicted of first-degree murder with special circumstances, McFarlin faces life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His next court appearance is scheduled for March 9 in El Dorado County Superior Court.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Belltower the evening of Jan. 12, 2025, to mourn the loss of two local teens, Joslyn Mae Walthers, 14, and Noah Chesterman, 15, both of Placerville, who perished in a house fire in Somerset on Jan. 1, 2025.

Friends and family tearfully signed memorials placed near the teens’ photos and lit candles. According to loved ones who spoke with media outlets, the fire started from a space heater that was too close to a Christmas tree at the friend’s house where the teens spent New Year’s

Many students went up to the stage, two at a time to express their feelings toward the youths.

“Noah was a special young man,” said Pioneer Bible Church youth group intern Pastor Jesse Withrow. “In this time, it is important for us as a community in Christ to reach out to those in his youth group, in his friend group and let them know that they are not alone. And I want us all to remember Noah and Joslyn’s examples.”

Federated Church opened the ceremony with a prayer, which was followed by remarks from State Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil. She praised the Title 25 program, for which this home was the first in the fire-devastated community, as “a model for other areas of the state.”

Next was an emotional speech by District 2 Supervisor George Turnboo, whose district includes much of the Caldor Fire-ravaged area. Turnboo was instrumental in getting the Title 25 program off the ground. He stated emphatically, “I am not giving up the fight for individual assistance for the residents of Grizzly Flat.” Someone from the crowd yelled, “We believe in you George!”

Non-Profit Construction CEO Caleb Armstrong gave heartfelt thanks to the many people, organizations, business and state and county government officials who worked tirelessly to fulfill the promise of a home for Mac and Cathie.

McNeil spoke to the crowd, thanking Representative Kevin Kiley and El Dorado County Planning and Building Department Director Karen Garner for their work, adding with some bitterness, “The feds and the state did nothing.”

McNeil also praised Non-Profit Construction. “Caleb came along and put this together and this is the first and only house, including Paradise and the fires in Southern California.

I don’t see the government doing anything,” he shared. “Caleb, he’s a miracle worker.”

Supervisor Turnboo handed over a key to the front door and Armstrong gave the couple a key to the back door before the couple went inside. They were surprised to see that gifts, purchased by Armstrong, were laid out for them.

“They did a wonderful job,” Cathie told the Mountain Democrat. “If we had to do this ourselves, I wouldn’t be able to stay retired.”

On Monday, July 8, 2024, the Sacramento Police Department Communications Center received a call for service at a residence located on Didcot Circle in Sacramento. Upon arriving, responding officers found Angelica Bravo, Lee’s partner, deceased within the home. Mateo Lee and Athena Lee, who resided with Bravo, were not at the home when officers arrived and may have been with Lee. The FBI is offering a separate reward of up to $25,000 for information that will lead to the location and recovery of Athena, 5, and Mateo, 3. At the time she went missing, Athena had brown hair and brown eyes stood 3 feet, 2 inches tall and weighed and 40 pounds. Mateo, who had had brown hair and brown eyes, stood 2 feet, 5 inches tall and weighed 25 pounds at the time he went missing.

Lee was charged with four counts of possession of an assault weapon on July 26, 2024, in the Sacramento County Superior Court.

A federal arrest warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was issued for Lee on Aug. 20, 2024, in the United States District Court in the Eastern District of California.

Coppola grew up in El Dorado County and studied at the University of Nevada, earning a bachelor’s degree in finance. He returned to his roots and started his career as an accountant with a Folsom property management company, working his way up the ranks to controller and the company grew to a staff of more than 200.

While climbing the corporate ladder had its perks, Coppola said something was missing. An epiphany hit while he and fiancée Stephanie Silva, a local teacher, took a walk down Main Street Placerville.

“As we walked down the street, we were met with so many happy faces that had either been a student of hers or a parent to one of her students.

It was incredible to see and hear the impact that she was having on all of their lives and to witness how much of a positive impact she was having on the community,” he recalled. “It was

Coleman, our previous treasurer-tax collector,” Coppola continued. “She has had an immense impact on the growth and modernization of our county along with my continued growth as a financial leader.”

The new treasurer-tax collector said he and his fiancée love living in El Dorado County and plan to spend the rest of their lives here, raising a family and giving back.

“We will always be here to help better El Dorado County in any way that we can, and we will ensure that our county remains a wonderful place to live for future generations,” he shared. “As I step into this new role as your treasurer-tax collector, I want to thank you for this opportunity to serve you, for this opportunity to help enhance our communities and for this opportunity to help shepherd the county that we all love into the future.”

Coppola’s appointment comes with a salary of $16,061.07 per month.

The event benefits adult clients of MORE with developmental and intellectual disabilities, providing opportunities for inclusion, creativity and independence.

Guests will have the chance to purchase one-of-a-kind artwork created by MORE artists, with a portion of the proceeds going directly to the artists. Live art demonstrations, raffles and auctions will also be featured. Mardi Gras–inspired attire is encouraged but optional.

“What makes MORE and this night so special is that the support we receive goes straight back into real experiences for real people, whether that’s learning a new skill, discovering a talent or gaining independence,” CEO Kelli Nuttall said.

igh above the American River canyon, a cable tramway once carried logs across a dizzying span locals dubbed the “Impossible.”

Nearly a century later, that vanished ride — and the lives shaped by it — will come vividly back to life in El Dorado.

On Saturday, Jan. 31, El Dorado County Historical Society invites residents and history enthusiasts to step into El Dorado County’s timberera past during a special presentation led by Phil Berry, a local guide and the grandson of Swift Berry, a pioneering figure in the region’s forestry history.

Berry will provide live narration alongside rare 1930s film footage,

offering a firsthand perspective on the Michigan California Lumber Co.’s narrow gauge railroad and its famed cable tramway that once stretched from Pino Grande to Camino. The films capture daily operations along the line and at Michigan Cal Logging Camp No. 15, where Berry lived as a young child.

“This is history told by someone who was there,” organizers said, noting the footage is rarely shown and gains added meaning through Berry’s personal recollections.

The presentation will take place at the El Dorado Community Hall, a restored 19th-century one-room schoolhouse located next to the historical El Dorado train depot.

Images from the timber boom era will be projected on a large screen as Berry recounts what it was like to

ride the line, work around the camps and grow up in the heart of a logging community that helped shape El Dorado County’s economy in the early 20th century.

Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to continue the experience aboard a newly launched, full-size El Dorado Western Railroad car located adjacent to the hall. The short ride traces the same route once used by Michigan Cal to move lumber from the foothills to markets beyond the county.

Organizers describe the event as both educational and immersive, blending personal storytelling, historical film and a physical connection to the rail corridor that powered the region’s growth.

“You’ve heard the stories of Pino Grande and Michigan Cal’s innovative

railroad,” organizers said. “Now you can experience it.”

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, at 6139 Pleasant Valley Road in El Dorado. Tickets are $20 for El Dorado County Historical Society members and $25 for the general public. Seating on the train is limited.

With limited capacity and a rare opportunity to hear directly from the Berry family, organizers expect the event to sell out. For those curious about what it took to move timber across rugged canyons — and what life was like along the rails — the journey promises a memorable ride back in time.

DAY HIKER Codfish Falls

W

ith autumn comes the rain. And with rain, the waterfalls return. I welcomed the change of season as I drove down to the Ponderosa Bridge in the Auburn State Recreation Area, approaching from the Interstate 80 side.

Today’s trek was the 1.5mile Codfish Falls Trail (1.7 miles if you include the walk from the parking area to the trail sign). Walking among trees and vines adorned with red and yellow leaves was calming.

The sights, sounds and cooler temperatures made it easy to linger on the trail.

The toughest part of this 1.7-mile hike is simply reaching the trailhead. The Ponderosa Bridge sits at the bottom of Ponderosa Way, beside the American River.

Outdoor columnist the parking area and the trailhead. A highclearance vehicle can access it from Foresthill Road via Ponderosa Way. My low-profile Subaru takes the longer but slightly easier route off Interstate 80. Take the West Paoli exit, stay right onto Ponderosa Way, then turn right and follow the winding dirt road for three miles down to the bridge. Be cautious — winter rains continue to erode the road, and washouts are possible.

At the bridge, you’ll find two chemical toilets. The trailhead is directly behind them.

The trail follows the river for most of the way. Early on, you’ll need to navigate a rocky outcropping, but it’s manageable. Some sections of the trail are narrow and eroding, so wear sturdy shoes and stay alert. A picnic table sits in a wide spot about halfway along the trail, offering a shaded respite during summer hikes.

You’ll hear the falls long before you see them. As you approach, your ears and eyes are drawn upward to the top of the cascade. Let your gaze follow the length of the first fall, but don’t stop there.

Fresh Tomato Bruschetta Chicken Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 28 minutes Servings: 6 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil, plus additional, for garnish 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 6 thinly sliced boneless, skinless chicken breast cutlets (about 1 1/2 pounds) 1 large onion, thinly sliced 1 jar (24.7 ounces) Bertolli

d’Italia Marinara Sauce cups multi-colored grape tomatoes, halved 2 stems cherry tomatoes on the vine 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze 2

Preheat oven to 400 F. In small bowl, whisk olive oil, basil, garlic, salt, pepper and oregano until combined. Combine 2 tablespoons oil mixture and chicken in resealable plastic bag. Let stand 5-10 minutes at room temperature to marinate.

In medium skillet, heat 2

tablespoons oil mixture over medium heat. Add onions; cook 3-4 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Stir in marinara sauce. Pour mixture into lightly greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Arrange chicken breasts in dish, overlapping if necessary. Top with grape tomatoes and cherry tomato stems. Spoon remaining oil mixture over tomatoes.

Bake, covered, 25 minutes, or until chicken is done (165 F) and tomatoes start to burst. Sprinkle with Parmesan, drizzle with balsamic glaze and garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.

ANNIVERSARY Standifords celebrate 70 years together Mimi Escabar Special sections editor

alph and Helen Standiford celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends on Dec. 13 at the Cameron Park Community Center.

Helen is a California native born in Sacramento where she was raised with three brothers and one sister.

Ralph was born in Springfield, Ore., the seventh son and 13th child in a family of seven boys and seven girls.

His family was hardworking farm hands traveling throughout California following the crops during the Great Depression and World War II. He had five older brothers serving in the military during World War II and one who served in the Korean War. Helen and Ralph have three sons, one daughter, four grandsons and two granddaughters. They also have nine great grandchildren.

Ralph started his working years in Sacramento in the grocery business while preparing for

peace officer with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Ralph holds a master’s degree in education and counseling from California State University, Sacramento which qualified him for several lifetime teaching and counseling

credentials. He is also a retired state licensed family therapist.

Helen was an avid tennis and pickleball player and Ralph is an avid fiddler. He is the president emeritus of the California State Old Time Fiddlers Association District 5 in Orangeville.

Ralph and Helen attribute their long and successful marriage and family life to sharing a deep mutual love and respect for each other while sticking together through thick and thin.

Their secret to a long successful marriage is to marry the one you love and live a long time.

A common misconception is that EDCF holds large pools of money and independently decides how charitable dollars are distributed. In reality, donors direct the vast majority of annual giving.

Approximately 97% of all grants distributed

by EDCF each year are recommended or directed by donors who have established funds with the foundation.

EDCF’s role is to steward those dollars with care, ensure compliance, provide due diligence and guide donors through community needs.

This donor-driven structure is one of the foundation’s greatest strengths. It allows for diverse philanthropic interests, encourages active local giving and invites community members to directly

shape the future of their community. The remaining 3% of funds awarded allows EDCF to address unmet needs and support long-range priorities.

PRESERVE IT! Chicken wing season

T

he Super Bowl is a month away, which means a grand feast of snack foods to plan and prepare. While textures and flavors abound at this annual gathering — whether you watch the game or not — a quintessential ingredient on the menu is spicy, vinegary buffalo sauce. Traditionally, this sauce is baked into chicken wings, with extra sauce for dipping, of course, but it also makes an excellent sauce for pizza or chicken sliders.

Sure, it’s not tomato season, but that bland winter tomato from the store will shine in this sauce recipe. Keep the peels from the tomatoes, sprinkle them with seasoning and dehydrate them for a unique snack.

Chicken wing sauce Makes about eight 8-ounce jars 10 cups peeled, cored, chopped tomatoes* 2 cups chopped onions 1/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 1/2 cups white vinegar (5% acidity) 4 teaspoons salt 2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon ground allspice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground ginger 2 to 3 tablespoons favorite hot sauce (optional), if you want more heat *To peel tomatoes, place them in a pot of boiling water for 30 to 60 seconds, or until the skins start to crack.

Immediately dip them in cold water. The skins will slip off easily. One pound of tomatoes equals about 2 1/2 to 3 cups of chopped tomatoes.

In a large stainlesssteel saucepan, combine tomatoes, onions, brown sugar and cayenne.

Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly.

Reduce the heat and boil gently, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes.

Sphere of influence updates for the Diamond Springs-El Dorado and El Dorado County Fire Protection Districts, as part of LAFCO Project No. 2025-01. The proposed sphere updates are categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) under California Code of Regulations §15320(b).

2. Reorganization of the Diamond Springs-El Dorado and El Dorado County Fire Protection Districts; LAFCO Project No. 2025-01.

The Boards of Directors for the Diamond Springs-El Dorado Fire Protection District (DSFPD) and the El Dorado County Fire Protection District (EDCFPD) unanimously adopted joint resolutions of application to LAFCO requesting annexation of the DSFPD service area and sphere of influence (SOI) to the EDCFPD – Shingle Springs Zone, along with the concurrent dissolution of DSFPD. Additional information can be found on the LAFCO website at https://www.edlafco.us/reorganizationof-the-diamond-springs-el-dorado-and-eldorado-county-fire-protection-districts-lafcoproject-no-2025-01. The proposed reorganization is categorically exempt from CEQA under California Code of Regulations §15320.
