California residents will see a wide-ranging slate of new laws take effect in 2026, reshaping workplace rules, healthcare costs, consumer protections, public safety and school policies. Among the most significant updates are expanded pay equity protections, new employer notice requirements, a statewide minimum wage increase and limits on insulin costs. Other measures address used car purchases, police use of face coverings, school policies and traffic safety.

Quick response rescues couple’s Christmas Shelly Thorene Staff writer

A Christmas crash has a happy ending for a couple and their dogs due to the valiant efforts of U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ruben Tala and other helpful motorists. At around 8:24 a.m. on Dec. 25 a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 50 left the roadway east of the 39 milestone marker and landed on its side dangerously close to a steep embankment. Tala was traveling through the snowy conditions with his family from Travis Air Force Base when he witnessed the SUV lose control. Tala pulled over and attempted to stabilize the vehicle; he was joined by other passing motorists who joined in to rescue the couple inside the vehicle and their two dogs. ■ See RESCUE, page A9
