Rabbi Yossi Grossbaum with the Chabad Jewish Community Center in Folsom and his family organized the event and was joined by soloist Yitzchok Friedman of St. Paul, Minn., who performed traditional music and a song dedicated to victims of the Bondi Beach shooting. The rabbi said he is originally from Australia and was personally affected by the loss of life there.

After the service, guests were treated to traditional potato latkes with applesauce, jelly filled doughnuts, both fried in oil, signifying the Hanukkah miracle that a single jar of oil, enough for one day, lasted for eight whole nights.

Walter G. Klinefelter

Oct. 28, 1938 – Dec. 11, 2025

Walter G. Klinefelter (Wally) of Kerrville passed away on December 11, 2025 after a heroic battle with AML, MDS and Alzheimer’s.

Wally was born on October 28, 1938, to Walter Klinefelter and Bertha Bisjak in St. Paul, Minnesota. He married Katherine Miller in 1957 before being deployed with the United States Navy.

Upon his honorable discharge following his final assignment aboard the USS Mount McKinley (AGC7) he returned to his growing family in 1961.

He curated a career as a lifelong salesman beginning with McDonald’s in the early years then Foodmaker Industries which reunited him with San Diego where he was once stationed. After Foodmaker, he spent several years restoring old cars with then wife June and son Timothy in the southern California area before moving to the foothills in Northern California.

This led to the highlight of his professional life as the proud owner of what began as the Diamond K and grew into Diggins Restaurant. He served up a healthy dose of companionship, laughter & joy to the local community who stopped by for his ever present smile & happy demeanor. He served a mean cup of coffee and the best breakfast in town.

Wally had a lifelong love for the Arts, Community, Old cars, Music, and Travel. He was an especially snazzy dancer, prancing around at every possible opportunity.

In his later years, Walter retired to Kerrville, TX where he spent his final precious years with his lovely companion, Jan Stutts, enjoying long drives, great food, virtual travel and lots of laughter.

He is preceded in death by his parents, the mother of his six children, Katherine “Kathy”, sister Bert Ann “Snooky” and husband Fred Payne, brothers James and Charles, and son Paul Walter.

He is survived by his youngest brother William “Uncle Bill” and Kathy, children Timothy of San Diego, Gregory, Kathryn, Annie & Cristian of Minnesota, Grandchildren Holly, Tony (Holly), Alexander (Melissa), Samantha (Stanley), Matthew (Mesa), Kalina (Ruby) and many great grandchildren.

Walt also leaves behind a multitude of cherished friendships in the Center Point/Rio Robles communities in Texas, as well as many in Placerville, CA and especially his dearest friend, Margot Stengel of Monterey.

Lorraine Marie Morrison Oct. 2, 1928 – Dec. 10, 2025

Lorraine Marie Morrison, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025. She was 97 years young.

Lorraine was born on October 2, 1928, in Bloomfield, Nebraska to Vernal and Jennie Clarence. They lived on their farm in Nebraska until the family came to California when Lorraine was six years old. She helped with the family store and gas station where they also lived along the Cajon Pass north of San Bernardino.

Later the family moved into San Bernardino and Lorraine graduated from San Bernardino High School. She earned an associate degree at San Bernardino Valley College and became the Dean’s secretary at the college.

She met the love of her life, Don Morrison, married and moved to Rialto where they raised their children, Donna, Terri and David. Lorraine and Don ran a successful Real Estate Appraisal business together and became real estate investors, developers, and landlords. Lorraine was very involved in the Rialto community where she volunteered in many local charities, the Methodist church and was a long-term president of the Rialto Women’s Club.

Lorraine and Don traveled around the United States in their motorhome. They traveled the world together, visiting Europe, China, Hong Kong, South America, Japan, Russia, Italy and Alaska.

Lorraine and Don moved from Rialto to Placerville in 1980 with her adult children and their families. Lorraine and Don were very involved with the Federated Church in Placerville.

They played bridge with many of their Federated friends. Lorraine has been widowed since 2009.

Lorraine was a very loving and active grandmother. She loved to bake delicious treats and cook special meals for family and friends.

Lorraine loved gardening and enhancing her beautiful Placerville property. She worked in her yard almost daily. Lorraine was very creative and kept busy with her knitting, sewing, painting, and stained-glass creations. She also loved to read. She read every page of the Mountain Democrat and many, many books. Lorraine’s fondest memories are of Christmas time when the whole family would gather at her home. Lorraine was a brave and loving soul. She will be sadly and greatly missed by all of us.

Lorraine is survived by her children; Donna Fleischer, Terri Wehner and David Morrison.

There are five grandchildren, Nathan Fleischer, Chad Wehner, Laura Thomas, Justin Morrison and Kevin Morrison. There are six great grandchildren: Norah, Ilsa, Clara, Molly, Leo and Remy.

There will be a memorial service on January 17, 2026, at the Federated Historic Church in Placerville.

Claire “Birdie” Costa

June 28, 1946 – Dec. 17, 2025

Claire “Birdie” Costa, 79, passed away peacefully at home on December 17, 2025, surrounded by love, after a brave journey with brain cancer. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1946, the sixth of eight children.

Birdie’s faith guided her life. As a devout Catholic, she believed deeply in helping others and lived that belief through quiet acts of service and boundless generosity. Whether through a hug, a kind word, or simply listening, Birdie made people feel seen and cared for.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Donald Costa; her children Bill, Bob, Debbie, Nancy, and DeeDee; eleven grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren, who were a constant source of joy in her life.

We will be having a Memorial Service Mass on December 29th, 2025 at 11am at St. Patricks Church, 3109 Sacramento St, Placerville, CA 95667.

Kenneth Wollard 1946 – 2025

Ken passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife by his side. Per Ken’s wishes there will be no public service.

Mark George Huston Dec. 7, 1957 – Nov. 4, 2025

Mark George Huston passed away on November 4, 2025, in Lemoore, California. He was born on December 7, 1957, in Berkeley, California, to Ronald and Margaret Huston.

At the age of five, Mark and his family moved to a ranch in Gold Hill area of Placerville, California. He spent his childhood fishing, exploring, and embracing the outdoors -- a love that stayed with him throughout his life. Mark attended El Dorado High School, where he was a proud member of the wrestling team. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for 23 years.

In 1979, Mark married Barbara Hammond, and the two shared a devoted life together. They welcomed their daughter, Christinein 1983, and Mark cherished his role as a father. After retiring from the Navy, he found purpose and joy working as a driver for the elderly, offering companionship and kindness to those he served.

Mark was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and his father, Ronald. He is survived by his daughter, Christine Bond; grandchildren, Shelby and Conner; his mother, Margaret; and his siblings, Marcie Schmitz (Bob), Matt (Kari), Scott (Monica), Brett (Jolie), and Stacey Pittman (Bob), as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mark will be missed by his family and forever remembered in their hearts.

OAKLAND — In an ongoing effort to support customers facing financial hardship, Pacific Gas and Electric Company is extending its Match My Payment Program. The program will continue into 2026 while funds last.

The PG&E Match My Payment Program offers a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $1,000, for qualifying low-to moderate-income customers to pay past-due energy bills to stop service disconnections.

PG&E launched the program in June, with a $50 million commitment to provide more ways for income-eligible customers to catch up on outstanding balances. The company is extending it beyond its original Dec. 31 end date while funds last. The funding supports PG&E’s Match My Payment and Relief for Energy Assistance through Community Help programs.

REACH provides income-eligible customers with a bill credit of up to $300 based on the pastdue bill. The emergency assistance is available for customers with a disconnection notice.

Year-to-date, the two PG&E programs have provided nearly $22 million in assistance to over 60,000 customers.

“We know how challenging it can be for families to keep up with bills in so many aspects of daily life, and we’re focused on delivering meaningful support,” said Vincent Davis, PG&E senior vice president, Customer Experience. “This extension is about giving more customers the help they need so they can keep their home comfortable and safe.”

The three counties with the highest number of approved applications and funding include: Fresno, Kern and San Joaquin counties, where collectively, PG&E has distributed more than $9.4 million in support.

PG&E Match My Payment recipients can receive multiple matches throughout the year by paying at least $50 toward a past-due balance of $100 or more. Eligibility is based on federal income guidelines. For example, a family of four earning less than $128,600 annually may qualify, which is double the income limit under the PG&E REACH program.

Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit firefighters were greeted with smiles and gratitude as they delivered more than 500 toys and $19,400 in gift cards to New Morning Youth and Family Services in Placerville on Saturday.

“We can’t do this work without the support from Cal Fire,” said New Morning Executive Director Kristen Patterson, who noted the agency used up the last of 2024’s gift cards the day before the Dec. 20 delivery. “We rely on gift cards to help us get through the entire year.”

Cal Fire PIO Wendy Oaks was on hand for the delivery and said she and the Cal Fire are thankful for 20 years of partnerships in the community.

Customers who received a $300 REACH grant are pre-qualified for up to $1,000 through Match My Payment, for a combined benefit of up to $1,300, or while funds last. Eligibility follows federal income guidelines, which are lower than those for the PG&E Match My Payment Program.

Funding is distributed on a first-come, firstserved basis. PG&E contracts with the nonprofit Dollar Energy Fund to process customers’ applications for program funding.

Other programs PG&E has other assistance programs to help income-eligible customers pay their energy bills: • California Alternate Rates for Energy Program: provides a monthly discount of 20% or more on gas and an average of 38% on electricity (compared to non-CARE bundled customers).

• Family Electric Rate Assistance Program: eligibility guidelines provide a monthly discount of 18% on electricity, regardless of household size.

• Energy Savings Assistance Program: provides energy-savings improvements at no charge.

• Arrearage Management Plan: a debt forgiveness plan for eligible residential customers.

• Other programs include Medical Baseline, which offers a reduction on energy bills for customers who depend on power for

For the past few years, El Dorado County Sheriff Jeff Leikauf has teamed up with El Dorado County resident Ron Mittelstaedt, CEO of Waste Connections, to give out bicycles to children who have been identified by EDSO School Resource Officers and SCHIELD volunteers. The bicycles, each with a helmet, were graciously donated by members of the community and Waste Connections. This year approximately 30 local kids received bikes.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

Church, first published in the New York Sun in 1897. e take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of the Sun: Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, If you see it in the Sun, it’s so. Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O’Hanlon Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age.

They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus!

It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias.

There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove?

Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond.

Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

I hadn’t thought of this! Moreover, I knew that I, the killer of so many houseplants, was not going to be a responsible caretaker of the lichen on the rocks in the downstairs living room.

Wistfully, my husband and I resigned ourselves to the eventuality of the lichen’s decay and disintegration, with bits of it littering the wood stove’s hearth pad.

But! That never happened. Some 46 years later, that lichen is still there, decorating those rocks, in spite of no misting at all — not to mention the periodic scorching from the woodburning stove!

How could this be? That’s what I learned in my most recent research.

Capable Creations students get crafty Shelly Thorene Staff writer

Students in the Adult Transition Program at El Dorado High School held a Christmas craft faire in their classroom Dec. 12. Students in the program created gifts for the holidays, including potpourri, air fresheners, coasters, handmade soaps, greeting cards, candles, fire starters and more. The proceeds from the classroom run business, Capable Creations go toward funding fun activities such as miniature golf, bowling and trips to In & Out Burger during the year.

Program teacher Trish Hardy said the students come from all of the area high schools and can participate for four years in the all-day program, including after graduation. They learn life skills including cooking and laundry which will prepare them for life on their own. Hardy said some students earn their California Food Handler certificate and some students become certified in CPR. She added, “They’re very employable and such good workers.”

Christine VanNoord of Placerville said she and her adult son, Shane, love the program. “He gets to socialize and work and participate in fun activities. It’s good for the community.” Students volunteer at Fat Kitty City, Snowline Hospice thrift stores, Exhilaration Station and local grocery stores. (For a taste of the variety, search online with “lichen images.”) And now I know that the green lichens are green because they contain algae, while the blue or purple ones get their hues from blue-green bacteria, the cyanobacteria.

Lichens don’t grow only on rocks, mind you; their root-like filaments can attach to nearly any surface, including bark, branches, leaves and even soils. They also cling to man-made substances like concrete (such as gravestones) and even metal, plastic and glass.

“Lichens are amalgams of two creatures: a fungus and either an alga or a bacterium,” he writes. “The fungus spreads the strands of its body over the ground and provides a welcoming bed. The alga or bacterium nestles inside these strands and uses the sun’s energy to assemble sugar and other nutritious molecules.”

Quite a dandy arrangement, and one recognized in 1897 when the term symbiosis was coined as the “living together of dissimilar organisms.” Lichens were offered as the prime example.

Could this laid-back approach to life help explain lichens’ incredible longevity? Because some Arctic varieties, for example, are estimated to be over 8,000 years old.

Hard to imagine, isn’t it? Yet this fact comforts me whenever I consider the lovely lichen-wrapped manzanita branch that hangs on the wall of our little Forest Service cabin, a bit of interior décor borrowed from Nature herself.

Or the lichen lacework in our wood-stove corner.

Because now I know all of it will outlast my husband and me.

Amazing. As Popova observes, “Sometimes it is the humblest life-forms that best intimate the majesty of life itself.”

In the case of the lowly but ubiquitous lichens: exactly so.

Thirty-six years after her letter was printed, Virginia O’Hanlon recalled the events that prompted her letter: “Quite naturally I believed in Santa Claus, for he had never disappointed me. But when less fortunate little boys and girls said there wasn’t any Santa Claus, I was filled with doubts. I asked my father, and he was a little evasive on the subject. It was a habit in our family that whenever any doubts came up as to how to pronounce a word or some question of historical fact was in doubt, we wrote to the Question and Answer column in the Sun. Father would always say, If you see it in the Sun, it’s so, and that settled the matter.”

Virginia O’Hanlon went on to graduate from Hunter College with a bachelor’s degree at age 21.

The following year she received her master’s from Columbia, and in 1912 she began teaching in the New York City school system, later becoming a principal. After 47 years, she retired as an educator.

Throughout her life she received a steady stream of mail about her Santa Claus letter, and to each reply she attached an attractive printed copy of the Church editorial. Virginia O’Hanlon Douglas died on May 13, 1971, at the age of 81, in a nursing home in Valatie, N.Y.

Holiday decorations could hurt curious pets. It’s advised that you keep a close eye on your furry friends this season to avoid a not-so-merry trip to the vet.

Washington D.C. — As families gather to celebrate the winter holidays, seasonal decorations, colder temperatures and festive foods can present unexpected safety risks for pets.

“While the holidays are a joyful time for families, they can also introduce hazards that pet owners may not immediately recognize,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Society.

“From toxic foods and plants to cold weather exposure and decorations, a little preparation can go a long way in keeping pets safe and healthy throughout the season.

“Pets are naturally curious, and changes in routine during the holidays can increase the risk of accidents,” she added. “Taking simple precautions helps ensure the season remains happy for both people and their pets.”

Veterinarian-approved safety tips • Keep an eye on holiday foods: Many popular seasonal ingredients — including chocolate, grapes, raisins, candies containing xylitol, alcohol, certain nuts and onions — are toxic to pets. Keep plates and leftovers out of reach, and remind guests not to feed pets table scraps.

• Secure decorations and ornaments: Tinsel, ribbon, ornaments and string lights can pose choking or intestinal blockage hazards if ingested. Place decorations high enough to avoid curious paws and unplug lights when not in use.

• Choose pet-safe plants: Several holiday plants, such as poinsettias, mistletoe and holly, can be harmful if eaten. Opt for pet-safe alternatives or keep plants well out of reach.

• Cover Christmas tree water: Water additives for Christmas trees can be hazardous if swallowed by your pets. Keep the tree water covered or avoid adding chemicals or preservatives to it.

• Protect pets from cold weather: Limit time outdoors in freezing temperatures, especially for small, short-haired, senior or medically vulnerable pets. Provide warm bedding indoors and consider protective gear for winter walks.

• Be cautious with candles and fireplaces: Open flames can easily be knocked over by curious pets. Use flameless candles when possible and supervise pets around fireplaces and space heaters.

• Prevent accidental escapes: Guests coming and going increase the risk of pets slipping out unnoticed. Ensure collars, ID tags and microchip information are up to date, and designate a quiet, secure space for pets during gatherings.

“We were able to win the Pleasant Grove tournament without him playing,” Bray said.

This year’s team only has four returning players from the 202425 team that went 17-10 overall, including a fourth-place finish in the Sierra Foothill League. There are 10 newcomers this season.

“We are very inexperienced this season with only four players returning that have varsity experience,” Bray said.

“So far, they have been doing OK.”

Mountain Democrat correspondent Four Oak Ridge High School boys basketball players scored in double digits in a nonleague road game on Friday.

That helped the Trojans break away from Cordova High’s squad in the second half inside the Lancers’ gym. The conclusion was Oak Ridge (7-3) posting a 93-38 win.

“We played well the second half versus Cordova,” said Oak Ridge head coach Marcus Bray. “We played the entire roster.”

This was the second time this season, and in nine days, the two teams faced each other.

Oak Ridge recorded a 79-25 win in the first game of the Pleasant Grove Tournament in Elk Grove on Dec. 11.

Lucas Cutler, a sophomore forward, led the way for the Trojans with 18 points. Jaxson Harris, a freshman guard, followed with 17 points.

Girls’ basketball powerhouse Bret Harte returned to El Dorado County this past Friday after capturing the championship at the Union Mine Winter Madness Tournament the previous weekend.

The rematch proved to be an evening of sweet redemption for the host Union Mine Diamondbacks, who prevailed in an overtime thriller, 46-42.

“They’ve had our number the last few years,” said Diamondbacks assistant coach Dave Reed. “They’re a really well-coached team.”

Union Mine withstood a barrage of three-pointers from the Bullfrogs, responding each time in a backand-forth battle.

The Diamondbacks were led by Adriana Cavallaro, who poured in 21 points while shooting an impressive 67% from the field.

Kyra Wooden added a strong all-around performance, finishing with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

The hero of the night emerged in overtime.

Callie Dawson was called upon to ice the game twice in the final minute. With Union Mine holding a slim lead and in the bonus, Bret Harte began fouling intentionally.

Dawson calmly sank two clutch free throws that appeared to put the game out of reach, but the Bullfrogs answered with an incredible sprintback three-pointer just seconds later — followed by another foul on Dawson.

t was a very merry early evening at the Mountain Democrat office as the winners of the Christmas Coloring Contest arrived. The winners and their families enjoyed looking at the other entries on display at California’s oldest newspaper while waiting for the festivities to begin.

Mimi Escabar, Special Sections Editor, welcomed everyone and then announced the winners in each age category.

The winners Six and under winners: First place, Logan Meadows, 6, Cameron Park; second place, Sydnee Smith, 5, El Dorado; and third place, Elanor Moore, 6, Placerville.

Ages 7 through 9 winners: First place, Charlotte Moore, 8, Placerville; second place, Leo Hanson, 9, Garden Valley; and third place, Jaxon Knigge, 7, Placerville.

The 10 through 12 winners: First place, Evan Marker, 12, Folsom; second place, Naomi Wood, 11, Shingle Springs; and third place, Allie Schott, 12, Cameron Park.

The Mountain Democrat Christmas Coloring Contest was co-sponsored by the T.W. Bonkers Toy and Candy Emporium and The Wild Pea. The artistic talented displayed by all the participants was amazing making it a very difficult decision for the judges to select the winners.

The judges were: Jody Franklin, Folsom Tourism; Sylvia Coleman, artist; and Wendy Goossen, artist and founder of Images of Hope.

“We had so many great entries to look at and as usual we had a tough time choosing the best of the best,” Franklin said.

“Some of the entries had added artistic touches that really caught my eye,” Coleman added.

“I was appreciative of the work done and being my first year judging it was more of a challenge than I thought,” Goossen said.

The entries were judged on originality, neatness and imagination.

The winners in each age category won $50 and a gift bag from the Mountain Democrat; second place won $20 and a gift bag from the Mountain Democrat; and third place won $10 and a gift bag from the Mountain Democrat.

or the 26th year, the Empty Bowls Dinner in Placerville will bring the community together to enjoy a meal and raise funds to fight hunger in El Dorado County and beyond.

The event will be held Sunday, Feb. 15, 2026, from 3-6 p.m. at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in the Forni Building.

Proceeds will benefit organizations addressing food insecurity, including Upper Room Dining Hall in Placerville, Hands4Hope Emergency Food Pantry in Placerville, El Dorado High School’s Natural Resources Program Garden Senior Project in Placerville and Earth’s Angels in Ghana.

Empty Bowls is a nationwide grassroots effort to fight hunger. The Placerville event is organized

by Hands4Hope – Youth Making A Difference’s after-school Empty Bowls Committee, made up of

18 middle and high school students, including six youth leaders, with support from 11 adult mentors.

The event was led for 23 years by the El Dorado Peace and Justice Community, with assistance from Hands4Hope participants. Leadership transitioned to the youth-led Hands4Hope committee in 2024, making 2026 the third year the event has been fully youth-managed.

“It’s exciting to work with fellow youth from throughout the region and adults from all walks of life to support an important cause,” said Lily Hinkle, project manager and a senior at Ponderosa High School. “Hunger is a serious issue, but the Empty Bowls Dinner is a joy-filled event. It takes hundreds of volunteers and the contributions of many ceramics artists and students, and we are grateful for all the support.”

ommunity members looking for a way to give back to local students are invited to join the El Dorado Community Foundation’s Scholarship Giving Circle, now entering its third year of supporting high school seniors pursuing higher education.

The giving circle pools donations and redistributes 100% of the funds as scholarships for graduating seniors at six El Dorado County high schools: El Dorado High School, Golden Sierra High School, Ponderosa High School, Oak Ridge High School, South Tahoe High School and Union Mine High School. Donors may designate which school their contribution supports.

Since launching the program, the foundation has awarded more than $27,000 in scholarships over the

ahoe Fund is building its 2026 project portfolio with efforts that reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, improve lake health and make it easier to get around, enjoy and care for Lake Tahoe.

Public agencies, nonprofits and environmentally focused businesses are encouraged to submit proposals requesting between $5,000 and

$1 million in funding.

Priority will be given to projects that can leverage public funding with support from the Tahoe Fund.

“Every year, we are blown away by the creativity of the projects submitted for funding consideration,” said Caitlin Meyer, chief program officer. “From transforming trailhead restrooms with beautiful murals to sending roving inspectors to busy beaches to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, our partners continue to lead with innovation as they work to improve the Tahoe environment.”

Since its founding in 2010, the Tahoe Fund

has partnered with more than 50 organizations to support over 220 projects across the Lake Tahoe Basin. Past efforts include Fire Smart Community Pilots that use new technology to create more fireready neighborhoods, the acquisition and demolition of the former Motel 6 site in the Upper Truckee River Marsh to restore sensitive wetlands and a pilot shuttle service to Emerald Bay designed to reduce vehicle traffic at one of Tahoe’s most popular destinations.

Match for Meals program benefits local food banks News release

ACRAMENTO — As local food banks’ resources are stretched thin to serve record numbers of people experiencing food insecurity, Sierra Health Foundation and United Way California Capital Region are launching the Match for Meals campaign. All donations made through Match for Meals until Jan. 31, 2026, will be matched up to $300,000 by the two organizations to benefit Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, Interfaith Food Bank of Amador County, El Dorado County Food Bank, Feeding the Foothills in Placer County and Yolo Food Bank. Sierra Health Foundation will match donations up to $200,000, and United Way California Capital Region will match donations up to $100,000, encouraging individuals and institutions to support the region’s five food banks.

“We launched Match for Meals because the need for nutritional assistance is greater than ever,” said Chet P. Hewitt, president and CEO of Sierra Health Foundation. “Matching initial donor funds doubles the support for local food banks that are working tirelessly to fill the gap left by cuts to critical safety net resources. This is our moment to make a real

impact when it matters most. Together, we can make a difference for our neighbors in need.”

The announcement was made at a press conference at Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, which supports more than 110 local agencies, including food pantries, community meal sites, senior centers, schools and nonprofits. On average, nearly 320,000 people rely on Sacramento Food Bank’s 200 distribution sites each month.

In October, the food bank broke a 49-year record, serving more than 372,000 people. Across the state in 2024, food banks distributed more than 950 million pounds of food and served more than 6 million people per month, according to the California Association of Food Banks. Currently, one in five Californians — almost 9 million — experience food insecurity.

“When one in five Californians is struggling to put food on the table, we are reminded that hunger isn’t just a statistic, it’s a reality for our neighbors, our friends and our families,” said Dr. Dawnté Early, president and CEO of United Way California Capital Region. “It impacts children trying to learn and working families striving to make ends meet and put food on their table. California State Fair to shift to fall beginning in 2027 News release

ACRAMENTO — The California State Fair will move from its traditional mid-summer schedule to early fall beginning in 2027, a change officials say will improve the guest experience and reduce the impact of extreme heat.

The California Exposition & State Fair Board voted to shift the fair’s dates to Sept. 17 through Oct. 3 starting with the 2027 season. Fair

officials said the decision follows several years of evaluation and planning by staff.

The move is intended to create a more comfortable environment for fairgoers while improving operating conditions for vendors, partners and other stakeholders.

“For years, our team has been evaluating the best way to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable fair for everyone,” said Tom Martinez, CEO of California Exposition and State Fair. “With rising summer

temperatures, shifting to the fall season allows us to create a more pleasant environment while maintaining the traditions Californians love.”

Martinez said fair leadership has consulted extensively with vendors, concessionaires, community partners and other stakeholders and found broad understanding of the need for the change.

“The move also aligns with several other state fairs that operate during the fall,” he said.

The 2026 California State Fair will proceed as scheduled and run from July 17 through Aug. 2.

Established in 1854, the California State Fair is held at Cal Expo in Sacramento and showcases agriculture, technology and the cultural diversity of the state. The fair has received international recognition from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions and has been ranked the best state fair in the nation for the past two years.

GROW FOR IT! Master Gardener Confidential: The “experts” tell-all

es friends, we’re back with another edition of Blunders, Bloopers and Bad Decisions.

Several brave Master Gardeners have agreed, under the condition of strict anonymity, to reveal deep and painful mistakes in their gardening careers.

The blunder of all blunders is planting chameleon plant, Houttuynia cordata, because it is a beautiful ground cover. The leaves are very pretty, with variegated splashes of green, yellow and red, but if you turn your back for even a minute, this plant will eventually battle for supremacy over anything in the garden and win. It defies eradication by almost any means and will test your will to get rid of it.

Lest you think it might be better behaved in a container, don’t kid yourself. Its rhizomatous roots will eventually grow out the drainage hole in the bottom and spread from there. In addition to Houttuynia,

Even theoretically well-behaved natives or herbs such as yarrow, Achillea millefolium, mint, Mentha spp., lemon balm, Melissa officinalis, oregano, Origanum vulgare, and milkweeds, Asclepias spp., can become invasive.

The next category of blunder is record keeping.

“I’ll remember where I planted x, ran those water lines or put down my favorite clippers.”

But we don’t.

Here’s an example of my own blunder on this subject. I’m guilty of not marking or mapping what a plant is named when I plant it. I have a mostly native garden, so I may know that I planted a ceanothus, manzanita or epilobium, but which variety? If the plant does well and I want to buy another one, I don’t know which one to buy. If it doesn’t do well, I want to make sure I don’t repeat my mistakes.

Keeping a garden journal, using plant tags to identify each plant by genus and species and placing small flags to mark new plantings or seed beds can help with my sometimes forgetful planting.

Or we divide up a favorite plant or dig some bulbs and cleverly set them in a corner to be dealt with later.

We get distracted and months later discover the sad remains. I’ve learned to put these partially finished projects right on the doorstep, where I’m forced to deal with

Let’s talk about impatience.

A Master Gardener admits she could not wait until evening for her husband to come home to help move a large and treasured pot to a new location. So she decided to move it herself, even though she lives on a steep hillside.

You can guess the rest.

The pot broke away, rolled down the hill and smashed into 100 pieces.

Or the Master

Gardener who found insect eggs on her prize rose and tore off the affected leaves before identifying the eggs as those of a beneficial lacewing.
