How to recycle household materials By Jennifer Gilbert Special to The Enterprise

Do you ever wonder what you personally could do to slow climate change? A major way that you, your household and the larger community can help to slow climate change is to sort your recycling and organic waste. Landfills are the third largest source of methane emissions in California. When buried in landfills, organic waste (including recyclables like paper, cardboard, as well as food scraps, food-soiled paper products, yard trimmings and other organic-based wastes) emit 20 percent of the state’s methane (a climate super pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide) and air pollutants like PM 2.5 (which contributes to health conditions like asthma). Items placed in the trash are sent directly to the landfill and are not sorted out. Since organic wastes make up half of what Californians send to landfills it’s important to sort everything into the correct bin. Reducing the amount of organic waste in landfills has a direct impact on the climate crisis and can create healthier air for all of us to breathe. In Davis, most of our waste can be placed in either the recycling or organics carts. Help us continue to keep material out of the landfill by taking a careful look at what you are throwing away to see if it can be recycled or composted instead! • Paper: Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, phone books, office paper, cereal boxes and shredded paper. • Plastics, metals and glass: Steel cans, aluminum cans, clean aluminum foil, aluminum pie plates, rigid plastics (including plastics #1-#7), metal and plastic caps and lids, plastic milk jugs and glass food and beverage containers. Please give containers a quick rinse (this helps the material and your cart stay clean)

Environmental Update

and place plastic caps on bottles prior to placing them in your recycling cart. • Organics: Fruits and vegetables, breads, rice, pasta, meat, bones, cheese, paper towels, paper take-out food packaging, facial tissues (yes, even after they have been used), greasy pizza boxes, refrigerated paper cartons and more. • Cardboard: Remove all packing materials (such as packing paper, plastic air pillows, foam and packing peanuts), flatten the cardboard boxes, and stack them flat on the ground next to your recycling cart, and Recology Davis will pick them up on your collection day.

What still goes in the trash?

• Diapers and other personal sanitary products • Broken dishes and glassware • Polystyrene foam (a.k.a.”Styrofoam”) • Plastic wrappers, plastic film and plastic bags • Pet waste • Pre-moistened disposable wipes • Disposable gloves • Single-use (disposable) face masks

Most common recycling questions:

• Do I need to keep paper separated from other recyclables? Yes! When the recycling truck empties recycling carts, the paper goes into one compartment of the truck, and the plastics,

metals and glass go into a separate compartment. • What do I do with paper cartons of juice, milk, soy milk or broth? This can be tricky as there are two different kinds of

cartons that are made from different materials. Cartons that are shelf-stable and do not require refrigeration before opening are not recyclable locally and should go in the trash.

Non-shelf-stable cartons that must be refrigerated before opening can be placed in the brown-lidded organics cart for composting. If it has a removable plastic cap, take that off and place it in the recycling cart (don’t worry about the plastic spout, it will be screened out of the finished compost). • Are our recyclables, particularly plastics, still being recycled? Yes! Because Davis collects paper separately from other recyclables and all recycling is hand-sorted here in Davis, our recyclables are still recycled and are not landfilled. Recology prioritizes domestic markets whenever possible, but they also follow the Basel Convention and do not ship lowgrade plastics overseas. Recology only export plastics that they know are recycled (they have followed their bales of plastics overseas and visited the recycling facilities to verify this). Keep up the great work recycling, Davis! How to shop at the Davis Farmers Market By Wendy Weitzel

Special to The Enterprise Let the colors of the season inspire your meal planning Looking to connect to the community? There’s no better way than through the Davis Farmers Market. Year-round at Central Park in downtown Davis, thousands gather each week to shop for what is grown, raised and made locally. Since 1976, the market has connected residents to their community, its land and its people. Shopping there supports a sustainable lifestyle, and provides a huge impact on the local food system. The Davis Farmers Market is open year-round, rain or shine, every Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon. It has long been one of the only markets with a permanent shade structure. Walk rows of stalls lined with a beautiful array of fruits and vegetables, including certified organic produce, choice meats, chicken, seafood, wine, local eggs and honey. Choose from a variety of fresh-baked goods, plants, flowers and gifts. Enjoy a picnic from one of its food stands, made from market ingredients. Below are some secrets to maximizing your market experience. Get to know the growers, the seasons and the reasons for shopping fresh and local. Farmers market shopping supports your neighbors and the environment. It keeps ag land rural and sustainable. Most vendors grow what they sell, and are happy to answer questions and suggest ways to prepare their products.

Taste the difference

You’ll never go back after you taste fresh-picked berries, locally grown potatoes or tomatoes, or just-harvested corn. Yes, you can get these things year-round at the supermarket but in the offseasons, they come from another hemisphere, losing flavor and

In addition to fruits and vegetables, the market has vendors that sell honey, herbs, baked goods, nuts and nut milks, eggs, cheeses, meats and jams.

using up a lot of fossil fuels to get here.

Try something new

The market will often have produce you can’t find in chain stores because some produce doesn’t ship well. You will find a larger selection of things like peppers, corn, potatoes and tomatoes, and a greater variety of colors and flavors than a traditional grocery store. Rather than shopping with strict recipes in mind, create your meals from the bounty of your discoveries.

Bring the little ones

The market can be an educational experience for the whole family. Your children can talk to farmers and start to understand how food is grown, and why it’s seasonal. Picky eaters are less likely to turn up their noses at produce that’s in-season and picked at its peak. (While we welcome families, health department rules forbid dogs in areas where food is sold.)

Find more than produce

In addition to fruits and vegetables, the market has vendors that sell honey, herbs, baked goods, nuts and nut milks, eggs, cheeses, meats and jams. There are also succulents, garden starts and plants.

Discover unusual gifts The market hosts florists and

Wendy Weitzel/ Courtesy photos artisans as well. On Saturdays, there are many skilled craftspeople who bring their customized goods. Examples include candles, soaps, pottery, tools, woodworking, quilts, umbrellas, totes, masks and clothing. The market shed sells logo merchandise and baskets, which are great components for building custom gift packages. Mark your calendar. The Davis Farmers Market, 301 C St., is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (or 6 p.m. during colder months) on Wednesdays. Saturdays is the flagship market, while the Wednesday and satellite markets are a great chance for a quick restock. Satellite markets include the UC Davis Farmers Market, on the North Quad: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays during fall and spring quarters; the Sutter Davis Hospital Farmers Market, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays, May through September; and the Sutter Medical Center Farmers Market in Sacramento, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, year-round. How to choose a roofer Special to The Enterprise

Roofs are designed to withstand many years of abuse from the elements, but even the best can erode. You should inspect your roof on a routine basis, and if you notice stray shingles, a leak or falling debris has damaged your roof it may be time to replace part or all of it. Roofing is expensive, so you’ll want to engage the services of the best contractor you can find to do the job. Your first step in finding a reliable roofer is to ask your family, friends and neighbors if they have recommendations. You can also look on the internet for roofing contractors in

your area. Some websites offer lists of professionals, along with reviews of their work. Personal recommendations will give you the best information. Be sure to focus on the quality of work as well as the cleanup process. You don’t want scraps of shingles and nails left over after the contractors have gone home. Don’t hire professionals who leave debris after they are gone. Pick someone with a long track record in your community. Some contractors travel the country looking for work. They appear after a community experiences a natural disaster or heavy storm. These contractors are making money from the insurance claims. If you hire one of them, they

cannot provide realistic guarantees for their work. After all, they may be on the other side of the country if your roof starts to leak again. Becoming acquainted with local contractors is especially important if you live in an area prone to high winds or hurricanes. It is good to know who to call if your house needs repair work. Once you have contact information for several roofing contractors, call them. Inquire about the company’s background and how long they have been in business. Generally, a good roofer should offer a guarantee between five to 12 years. If the company has been in business for less than

five years, it will be difficult to determine the quality of their work. Continue to ask questions about timeframes and estimates. You should always get a written estimate before proceeding with any work. Communicating with the contractor will let him know that you will be taking a hands-on approach to this project. Find out if the roofers recommend standard or architectural shingles, what they will do if they find damaged decking, and when they might be available to start. You should also ask about the warranty and whether you can have it confirmed in writing. Every professional who works

JULY 2022

on your property should be licensed and bonded. Insurance is particularly important for roofing contractors. They should be able to cover any damages they might cause to your property. It is also essential that workers are covered under their insurance as well, in the event someone is injured during the job. Before work commences, you must receive a written contract from the roofer. Read it over carefully. It will state the type of materials to be used, what the work will entail and the final cost. Following these tips will help you find the best roofing contractor in your community. You can rest comfortably knowing that you made the right decision.

How to choose a Furniture Store Special to The Enterprise

Quality that lasts

When on the hunt for furniture, look for a store that sells quality, long-lasting products. While inexpensive accessories can be bought cheaply and changed often, big furniture investments — sofas, dining tables and the like — need to be purchased for the long term. That means putting solid construction before a pretty style. Solid construction isn’t always apparent at first glance. It should feel solid, not flimsy, of course. Beyond that, find out as much information as possible about the frame, materials and what kind of warranty it comes with. A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as

guides and teachers, not pushy salespeople.

Value, not just price

It is best to pay more for a quality piece than to try to save money on something that will not last in the long term. The bigger the investment, the more important the design and quality become. Concentrate on finding the best value. An inexpensive sofa will not be a good value if it is built with cheap and weak materials. Likewise, the most expensive love seat will have a wise investment if the frame is not built solidly. It’s best to look for brands with a long track record and good reputation.

Service and delivery

Every store has a different customer service policy. Choose a store that is well known for being loyal to its customers.

A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as guides and teachers, not pushy salespeople. Inquire about return policies. Some furniture stores will allow you to exchange an item within a

certain time limit if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Learn what fees are involved if you have

to return an item — if that is allowed at all. Also, be certain to ask about the store’s delivery policy, including how much it costs, how far they’ll deliver and how quickly your furniture will arrive. If you are comparison shopping, factor in the delivery cost when considering different stores. A low-priced couch will not save you money if it comes with an expensive delivery fee. It may be worth it to pay a little more for the couch if free or reduced cost delivery is available. The bottom line is that there are only two things that matter: the quality of the furniture you are purchasing, and the level of service you receive. Once you discover them both, furniture shopping can be a fun experience that that will beautify your home for many years. And you can be happy and comfortable with the furniture for generations to come.

How to choose a mortgage company Special to The Enterprise

Choosing a mortgage company, and even thinking about the home loan process in general, can seem a bit overwhelming. Therefore, it is important to have an experienced, knowledgeable and reputable lender who will partner with you in exploring your home loan goals and options that best fit your needs. As you do your home-loan shopping and speak with different lenders, compare interest rates. And keep in mind that many factors dictate interest rates, such as occupancy type, loan program, property type, loan to value, loan amount and credit scores; so be sure to provide the same parameters to each lender in order to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Rates can change daily, so be sure to set aside some time to do your mortgage shopping on

the same day, if possible. While rates and fees are a very important part of your decisionmaking process, there are many other things to consider when selecting a lender. For instance, what is the lender’s process once you decide to move forward? What is their pre-approval process and how do they help make your offer shine above the rest? Do they have an organized team, one that is communicative and can meet critical timelines? Rate lock extensions can be costly and, maybe worse, not meeting contractual timelines can also diminish the seller’s trust in you and your lender, which can make negotiations more difficult. Another consideration is choosing a local lender who has built trust in their community and among local real-estate professionals. Look up online reviews and testimonials to find

Adobe Stock/Stock photo a lender who is also known for going above and beyond for their clients and creating an

exceptional experience. A lender who has a reputation for honoring their word and

creating a smooth transaction without stress can make all the difference.

How to choose a carpet cleaner Special to The Enterprise

There’s been a trend in recent years toward hardwood flooring, not just because of its natural beauty, but because it’s easy to clean. But the joys of carpeting cannot be denied. And if you care for it properly, there’s no reason to abandon carpeting. It’s comfortable, colorful and warm, and brings big design advantages to any room. While carpeting has advantages, keeping it plush, soft, clean and looking and smelling good is paramount to making sure it lasts as long as possible. Regular cleaning will help your carpet maintain its beauty and texture. But it’s also a tedious and difficult job that many don’t want to approach themselves. That’s when you may want to enlist the help of a professional. Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting a carpet

You should also check whether the company subcontracts services to other providers, and get to know them as well.

Cleaning process

Adobe Stock/Stock photo cleaner.

Professional staff

A carpet-cleaning company should have a professional appearance and demeanor. There are few regulations on cleaning businesses, so the professionalism of each company can vary widely. Keep in mind, you will be bringing these cleaners into your

home, so ask the company pertinent questions and make sure you are comfortable with their staff and process before hiring them. Proof of their insurance coverage is a must. If the company doesn’t have insurance, you’ll be responsible for injuries or damage that occur while they work on your property.

Processes for cleaning carpets vary. A good cleaning can be achieved using chemicals, water, steam and heavy-duty equipment. Learn about the company’s process and understand why they prefer one process over another. Verify that the chemicals are safe and nontoxic if you have children or pets.

Happy customers

References from previous customers can be a big help in choosing a good cleaning company. People are usually happy to tell you when they’ve received good services. They’ll also usually let you know if you’re in for a disappointment. Your social network is a great

place to ask about carpet cleaning companies. If they have found a great service, ask for the contact information and get a quote for your own home. You can search online for information about what to expect. Look at review websites to see what customers have said about each business.

Protection policies

As with any service, you should ask your carpet cleaning company about their service guarantees. If they miss stains and spots will they return? How about if they somehow damage your carpet or leave your home with a lingering chemical odor? If the prospective cleaning company gives a guarantee, it’s a good indication of sound business practices. So find a company with warranties and a spotless reputation, and you’ll know you have found a good carpet cleaner.

How to choose a gold buyer Special to The Enterprise

When it comes to selling something as valuable as gold, choosing a gold buyer can mean the difference between a handsome payoff and winding up short of what you expected. Depending on your situation, you may simply have come into a collection you don’t need or want, or you have valuables you need to cash in to provide much-needed cash. Either way, a reputable gold buyer can help you get the most of your sale. Gold prices will always be volatile, subject to the peaks and valleys of the economy and markets. But it’s also always a solid investment that can be a safeguard against inflation and declines in currencies. It also comes with a huge risk: potential dealings with unscrupulous experts who lack experience in determining the proper value of these items. Many pieces of jewelry might be worth more than their gold content or melt value. Anyone can make a mistake, but fly-bynight operators will often offer far less than the melt value of the gold in these items.

Here are some tips to help you get the most money from selling your unwanted gold.

Research

Metro/Stock photo

Exercise caution when selling gold. While many buyers are honest and reputable, finding them requires research. They are counting on your lack of knowledge. Infomercials have also flooded the airwaves with ploys offering “immediate cash for your unwanted gold.” But mailing gold in flimsy prepaid envelopes to these dealers is the same as dropping cash into the mail. Exercise caution when selling gold. While many buyers are honest and reputable, finding them requires research.

Do some research to determine the gold content of an item. Gold is soft, so it must be alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and durability. Jewelry usually has an inscription identifying the purity of its gold content. For instance, 24-karat gold contains 99.9 percent gold. It is measured in terms of a troy ounce, equal to about 1.097 avoirdupois ounces, the kind of ounce we use in measuring butter, flour and body weight. One troy ounce of 14-karat gold contains 14/24th troy ounce of the pure metal.

Visit reputable jewelry stores

Next, take your gold items to reputable jewelers in your area for their opinion. A jeweler may charge a small fee for this service. It is the best way to establish the gold content when the piece lacks markings. Take it to more than one jeweler to verify the findings.

The Better Business Bureau and the Internet are valuable sources of information about gold buyers. Poor dealers usually leave a pile of complaints from disgruntled sellers whom they’ve allegedly cheated. Do not deal with these companies. Also, if a gold buyer operates from their home or business unrelated to precious metals, be careful. They probably don’t have enough experience to provide an accurate evaluation of your items. It pays to use a local business. If you must mail your gold items, insure the package and use registered mail available at the United States Postal Service. You could use a shipper that offers package tracking and delivery verification. Do not trust someone you don’t know and have never met. Learn as much as you can before visiting a gold dealer. Information is your ally. There are reputable gold buyers doing business today, and they will pay you for the true value of your piece. Doing the proper research and taking precautions will help you find the best people doing business today.

What to look for in a senior-care agency Special to The Enterprise If a senior reaches a point where he or she needs care but wants to maintain a level of independence at home, in-home care is a good option to look into. If you’re looking to find home care for your loved one, you’ll want to find an agency that is compassionate, qualified, professional, and has client and caregiver safety protocols in place during this time of pandemic. So, what does that entail exactly? Here are a few things to consider when searching for quality in-home senior care.

Are they licensed and qualified?

Is the agency fully licensed by the state? Most states require that home care agencies have a license and be reviewed regularly. You may also want to find out how long the agency has been providing home care, although experience does not always equal quality. Nowadays, you can find star ratings and reviews online for almost anything, including home care agencies. You could also ask the agency for a list of references, which are usually doctors, discharge planners, and other clients who are familiar with the agency. Qualified agencies will make a visit to your home before setting you up for care. A registered nurse will perform an assessment to determine the needs of the senior, whether medical or non-medical. Does the provider meet all of the senior’s needs? Some seniors may also have special needs, like physical therapy, occupational therapy, or language and cultural preferences. Safety should be a top priority when looking for home care. One in ten seniors living at home suffers from some form of elder abuse, and it’s an issue that often goes under the radar. Be sure that the agency you choose performs extensive background checks on their caregivers. You can never be

Adobe Stock/Stock photo

If a senior reaches a point where he or she needs care but wants to maintain a level of independence at home, in-home care is a good option to look into. too careful when hiring someone to come into your home. It’s also a good idea to choose an agency that hires employees — rather than a registry or individual — who are covered by workers comp and liability laws.

What is the quality of care?

Are the agency’s caregivers trained, certified, and offered continuing education? Even nonmedical care requires certain levels of experience. It’s important to find someone who is trained to assist seniors with activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, walking up the stairs, preparing

meals, etc. Some seniors will also want the same caregiver every day, so be sure to ask the agency if they are able to keep the same caregiver on a case consistently. Does the agency involve the family in the care plan? A good agency will not only include a senior’s loved ones in the development of the plan, but also keep them in the loop with updates on changes in the care plan and caregiver, how the senior is doing, and emergency situations. One of the most important things to consider is what type of caregivers the agency hires. Are they compassionate and understanding? Are they reliable

and punctual? Will they respect your senior loved one and also treat them as a friend? It will be easier for the senior and family members to transition if they know they are in good hands with their caregiver.

What about financial care coordination and help with payment sources?

Just because a home-care agency is licensed and has great caregivers doesn’t make them the right fit. Frequently, one of the most difficult aspects of handling in-home care is dealing with funding sources and payment for

services. There are so many things that can go into this — is care being funded by a long-term care insurance policy? Is the person being cared for a veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran, and is the Aid and Attendance pension involved? Does the senior prefer to convert a life insurance policy to pay for in-home care? If your answer is “yes” to any of these questions, you’ll want to go with an agency that can help you manage these aspects of your care. Interestingly enough, this is something many home-care agencies claim to do, but that very few actually help you with in meaningful ways.

Do not make the mistake of basing your decision on cost alone. They may also offer other products from off-site manufacturers. In general, they are an excellent resource. Jewelers and watch repair technicians have undergone extensive training and should

They also attend periodic classes to keep current on regulations within the industry. Many jewelers travel to professional shows featuring the latest trends. They maintain their knowledge

and understanding of the precious metal and gemstone markets. Technical expertise isn’t the only aspect to consider. Customers who receive superior service are likely to return for future purchases. You’ll want to work with someone who sees more than dollar signs behind each customer. Guarantees are essential. It is a fundamental factor in establishing a long-term relationship with the public and a track record of satisfied customers. A discount store may offer an unbelievable price on a piece of jewelry. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Inexpensive prices are often an indicator of lower quality gemstones and metal components with lower purity. Doing business with a jeweler you know and trust will make a big difference when it is time to make a significant investment in a ring,

necklace or watch. He or she will make every effort to get you the best possible price without sacrificing quality. If you have been doing business with the same shop for a long time, you should expect a high level of service. The item should be guaranteed every time. Anyone can sell jewelry. Malls across America are filled with jewelry stores. But a dedicated professional jeweler doesn’t just sell precious metals or gemstones. He or she brings a keen eye for the beautiful and stunning quality of each piece. It is true that price is important, but it shouldn’t be your top consideration. You will get better value for your money when you do business with a jeweler you can trust — now and 20 years from today. High-quality workmanship starts with the jewelry and ends with your satisfaction.

How to choose a flooring company Special to The Enterprise

Choosing flooring for a home or business is no longer as simple as choosing carpet, tile or linoleum. Modern flooring is made of several materials, including concrete; ceramic, porcelain or vinyl tile; wood; laminate; and plank vinyl, which mimics the look of wood. What you choose depends on the room, maintenance considerations and traffic, as well as aesthetic considerations. Most flooring dealers stock many of the popular options or can order them, and you’ll likely discover there’s many dealers in this competitive business, so choosing the right dealer is key to your decisions. Getting the service and value you seek from an expensive and long-term investment requires you consult a reputable, professional flooring dealer with a history of meeting client needs with not only sales but support and service. Here are some things to consider as you shop for flooring. When picking the best flooring and respective dealer, longevity, not price,

Quality of materials, comparable or lower prices and good references will all make a big difference in finding the right flooring dealer.

should be your guide. Everyone wants the best price possible, but it’s important to consider these factors as well: What if something happens in 10 years and you have no warranty to repair or replace the damage? Or if the installers make a mistake and leave your flooring permanently damaged? So be sure to look at additional support and services. Find a dealer who has a great reputation and long track record of excellent customer service. Spending extra money is worth purchasing a product from

a flooring dealer you can trust. You aren’t just buying flooring. You are also creating a relationship. When looking for a flooring dealer, look on the internet or your local phone book. On the internet, you can find review sites to see how local flooring dealers compare. You can also check advertisements in your local newspaper to find specials and deals. Be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has had any complaints lodged against it. If so, look to see how they were resolved. You might also check with the Chamber of Commerce. After making a list of potential dealers you are considering, give each of them a call. Inquire about the background of the company and how long they’ve been in business. You may ask for referrals from previous customers for references. Find out about the installation services they use and the dealer’s reliability. Do they use in-company groups or outside contractors? Also, find out about prices and warranty coverage. If you visit their offices, they might even show you a scrapbook of prior work.

How to choose a garden center Special to The Enterprise

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a novice, choosing plants and flowers for your home requires a great garden center or plant nursery for your landscaping and gardening projects. A well-run, well-stocked garden center filled with a variety of plants, flowers, seeds and gardening supplies will be a frequent stop for any gardener, so choosing wisely is the key to success. But garden centers are more than just plants. The best centers will be staffed by knowledgeable plant and landscaping experts who can advise you on the best type of plants for your garden. They can help you choose by understanding the specifics of what you’d like to achieve and how to help keep your garden healthy year-round. Because you’ll likely want to develop a relationship with a

garden center, choosing the right outlet will help you get the most out of your garden. Here’s what you should look for when selecting a garden supply store.

Do the research

Look at the center’s website or informational brochures. They should have information to help you become more successful. Staff advice should be easy to understand and apply. Remember, they are not only retailers but also experts in their field. Expertise can also be defined by media presence. The specialists at the garden center you are considering should be on the short list that the media uses. Your friends and neighbors may have referrals. Does someone in your social network love gardening? If so, then ask who they use. While most garden centers stock

a wide variety of brands and products, some specialize in certain categories of plants and may be especially knowledgeable about those. Examples include native plant nurseries, growers of vegetables and herbs, and house plant shops.

Visit garden centers

Talk to the staff. Think of a problem you experienced in the past and ask them for a solution. They should be knowledgeable about pest and disease identification and lifecycles, extent of damage you can expect, and considerations about whether to treat or not. Do they offer safer pest control options and know how to apply the product you’re considering? Find out how long they have been in business and more about the owner. Good centers are usually in the same place, operated by the same people for a very long time.

Do the plants look healthy and well-maintained? Well-labeled with botanical name and growing information? Is there an interesting variety of plants?

Regionally appropriate

Are the plants appropriate to the region for cold-hardiness, heat tolerance, and local climate and soil conditions? Know your climate zone! If you live in USDA Zone 9, and the plant is only hardy to USDA Zone 10, it won’t likely survive the winter. If they have special requirements regarding winter protection, special fertilizer needs, or will require seasonal spraying or pruning, is that indicated on the label or brought to your attention by the staff at the time of purchase? Once you’ve done your research and know what you want, head on over to your local garden center and get started improving your garden.

How to choose a funeral home Special to The Enterprise

After the death of a loved one, choosing a funeral home for services and memorials prior to burial is the next step in honoring a life. Sometimes it can be a hasty decision made during a confusing time. But it’s worth the time and effort to survey funeral homes in your area and take account of the services before making a selection. Here are some tips to help make choosing the right funeral home less stressful.

Ask for recommendations

Even if you have never had to choose a funeral home in the past, you may have a friend or two who has. Ask these friends if they would recommend the services provided at the funeral homes they have used. They may be able to share valuable information

about the staff and facilities of a specific funeral home.

Caring staff

When visiting a potential funeral home, the funeral director can be a major deciding factor when you choose whether or not to use this particular company to handle the funeral of your loved one. A caring and professional funeral director and staff will take the time to explain all your options in an empathetic way so you can make a better choice when choosing a funeral home. If the director seems short or uninterested in your needs or makes you feel like you and your deceased loved one aren’t important, you won’t want to choose this facility to handle the funeral of your loved one. How to choose a financial planner By Paul Meyerhoff

Special to The Enterprise It can be overwhelming to choose a financial planner. They go by many titles and acronyms, provide different services and are compensated in a variety of ways. This brief article offers five tips for selecting the right financial planner for you.

Know what you are looking for

Do you want someone to manage your investments? Are you looking for advice on a range of personal finance issues other than investments? Or are you looking for a comprehensive package of services that includes investment management as well as planning? The terms “financial

advisor” and “financial planner” are often used interchangeably, but not all financial advisors provide financial planning services – some may be mostly focused on selling or managing investments.

Check out the qualifications

The financial planner may go by other titles, such as “financial advisor” or “wealth manager,” so assessing their capabilities is key. You want to ensure they have experience in the services you seek. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) mark indicates that the individual has met comprehensive education, examination and experience requirements. Be sure to ask a potential planner if they

are acting in a fiduciary capacity, which requires them to put your interests first.

Look for a planningcentric process

Financial planning should lead the investment process and not come as an afterthought. A planning-centered advisor can help you align your investment portfolio with your goals. Making investment decisions without a thorough understanding of why and when your money is needed can lead to a portfolio that is too risky or too conservative for your needs.

Understand how you will be charged for services

Your planner should be able to clearly spell out all the fees you will pay, how you will pay them, and the services provided for those fees. “Fee-only” financial planners are compensated directly by clients solely and do not receive commissions, which helps to reduce conflicts of interest.

Assess the personal aspect

When done well, financial planning is personal. Your plan should be about you — your goals in life and the financial strategies that can help achieve them. You want someone who is a good listener and empathetic and gets to know you and your values. A financial planner and client

working as a team will create the best financial plan. Ideally, the planner will collaborate with other professionals such as attorneys and tax professionals as part of your team. To find a financial planner, consider asking family members, friends, and colleagues for recommendations. You can do localized internet searches, such as “fee-only financial planner Davis CA,” and search on www. letsmakeaplan.org. Potential regulatory issues are disclosed at www.brokercheck.finra.org. Once you have a short list, schedule a call to discuss your situation and get a feel for whether they are a good fit. A good financial planner will help you gain confidence in your situation and help you make the most of your resources.

How to choose a good appliance store Special to The Enterprise

So much we purchase these days is from online outlets. But there are still many things you need to visit a brick-and-mortar store for, among them appliances. Not just because of their size, but these big-ticket items are something you want to experience and learn about in person. While many department stores and big-box outlets sell appliances, it’s worth your time and effort to shop around for the best deals. But price isn’t everything. Smart technology has breathed new life into appliances, so finding the right oven, refrigerator or dishwasher is no longer a matter of cost and color. We’ve put together some tips that can help you narrow your search and find exactly what you need. But first you’ll have to determine your budget and requirements — what you need,

what you want and what you’re willing to pay for it. Now, it’s time to go shopping.

products.

Shopping online

First, do an internet search for appliance stores in your area. Local stores are easier to work with and you will likely be able to get your appliance much quicker than if you had to go out of the area or order it. If your refrigerator has stopped working, this is especially important. Many appliance stores also offer free delivery in the local area. Consumer Reports and the Better Business Bureau are also great resources for finding reputable businesses. To qualify for listing on the Better Business Bureau site, the business must be reliable and honest. Many stores also have review sections for customers to leave comments, reviews and ratings

For most of us, getting a good deal is probably a top concern when shopping for appliances. Check your local newspaper for the latest, greatest deals on appliances in your area. Many stores will use pricematching to stay competitive. Not all stores have policies on price-matching, so be sure to ask first. If you can find a lower advertised price on the exact same product and model elsewhere, many stores will sell you the product for that price. As always, conduct research on the appliance you need to make sure you are spending money wisely. Not all appliances are the same; just because one manufacturer was excellent two decades ago doesn’t mean the quality will be the same now.

Store policies

Review the store’s policies about warranties and repairs. If the appliance comes with a oneyear manufacturer’s warranty, you might not need an additional warranty from the store. Appliances have a yearly saleprice cycle. Washers and dryers usually go on sale during the winter. Refrigerators are often discounted in the spring, with stoves and ovens dropping in price during the fall. If you don’t need it right away, consider shopping seasonally for the best deal. You could also haggle for a price, especially at a local appliance store. Salespeople are typically prepared for this process. If you are too shy or afraid of haggling, ask the store for extras, such as an extended warranty or free delivery and set-up. It never hurts to ask.

How to choose a good painting contractor Special to The Enterprise If you’re looking for easy ways to spruce up your home and increase your enjoyment of a room, a fresh coat of paint can work wonders. It’s among the least expensive home renovation projects, but it’s also timeconsuming and DIY jobs don’t always achieve the expected results. A great paint job can transform a room or home, inside or out. But a poor job can end up damaging your home at added expense — not to mention the disappointment. So hiring a professional painting contractor can help ensure an expert job done right to your specifications. It’s time for a fresh coat of paint on your home, shop around and make sure you’re working with a reputable painting company. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you vet potential

Details

painters.

Previous work

When looking for a painting contractor, one of the first things to consider is their previous work. It will give you a good indication of the quality you can expect. For exterior paint jobs, ask the contractor for a list of buildings he has painted in the past. You can easily inspect his work yourself by visiting the location. A quality paint job should last for several years without showing signs of deterioration. Ask how many years the contractor will guarantee their work on one- and two-coat paint jobs. Also ask if the contractor is a licensed, bonded and insured company, and how long they have been in the business.

Design help

The best painting contractors will help you avoid the costly

Adobe Stock/Stock photo mistake of choosing wrong colors for your home. A shade that is too light, dark or just “off” can ruin an otherwise good paint job. True professionals will be patient with you. They will put several options on the wall so you can decide the best color and sheen. They will develop good relationships with you and an

interior designer, if you’ve hired one.

Specialties Ask about the contractor’s specialty finishing, such as wall texturing, epoxy garage floors, deck and fence staining and cabinet refinishing.

Consider all the details before signing a contract. You should have all the specifications in writing. This contract should include deadlines, along with specifying costs and materials to be used. When you have narrowed your choices down to one or two contractors, ask plenty of questions. Inquire about what kind of insurance policy they carry, who will be doing the work at your home and what kind of preparations need to be made. If they are working on the interior of your home, you will likely need to move or protect your furniture before they arrive for the job. After these questions have been answered satisfactorily, you can be confident you’ve chosen the right painting contractor. Then you can relax while your home gets an updated, fresh new look.

How to create a spa-like bath Special to The Enterprise

We all want a place to escape from our hurried lives, a showering and a bathing sanctuary where we can relax and rejuvenate, surrounded by beauty. At Lorain Design, we plan, design and build large and small bathroom remodels that give our clients that spa-like getaway. Below is a list of design elements to consider for your bathroom upgrade if you’d love to replicate the feeling of a luxury resort at home:

Gorgeous tile

Even the smallest bathroom can become an enviable oasis with take-your-breath-away tile. Go daring. Who says your bathroom has to be generic white on white? How about realistic wood-look porcelain tiles to remind you of an

open-air wellness retreat? Or rich sea blue tile to make you feel like you’re at an oceanside vacation destination?

Air tubs and whirlpool tubs

Air tubs, a fairly new massaging tub quickly replacing water-jet whirlpool tubs, use a series of pinhole vents to pump thousands of invigorating bubbles into the tub water. The motion of the air bubbles surrounding your body gives you a feeling of weightlessness and relieves muscle tension. The air vent intensity can be adjusted to create a soothing or more intense overall massage.

Japanese soaking tub

Deeper than a standard tub and traditionally with a smaller round shape, Japanese tubs typically have a built-in seat, letting you immerse yourself up

to your neck in enveloping warm water in a seated position.

and treatment rooms of highend wellness centers.

Steam showers

Beautiful plumbing and light fixtures

Steam showers can transform a standard shower space into a luxurious bathing environment. A steam generator heats water into steam which then circulates around the sealed shower enclosure. Steam showers are known to have many health benefits, including lowering stress levels, increasing blood flow, reducing joint pain and stiffness, hydrating your skin and improving breathing issues.

Full tile walls

Why does the shower tile have to stop at the edge of the shower? Continuous tile walls expand the sense of space by connecting the shower with adjoining bathroom elements. Large tile walls are also practical for cleaning and remind us of the tiled hallways

Bathroom faucets, tub fillers, shower heads, pendant lights and chandeliers can be the jewelry of a luxury bathroom. Whether your overall design style is sleek and modern or vintage chic, select all the perfect fixtures to complete the design aesthetic of your spa-like bathroom and set your project apart from the rest. If you’re ready to have your ordinary bathroom transformed into a spectacular getaway retreat, allow yourself some time to thoroughly consider your space and plan the elements you want to include. The beauty of the end result will make the extra time spent planning well worthwhile.

How to create effective publicity Enterprise staff

What is publicity? It’s information designed to attract public interest or support. Suppose your organization is having a special speaker, a concert, a sports event or a fashion show, and wants to let the general public know about it. There are a number of things you can do to promote interest: put up posters, tell your friends, or announce it at your church or lodge meeting. But the quickest way to reach the largest number of people is through your newspaper. You recognize, of course that your organization isn’t the only one planning interesting activities. Competition for public participation can be keen on just about any day of the year. So, naturally, your group will try to make the event as interesting and as lively as possible, because you wouldn’t have planned it in the first place if you didn’t want people to come and find it rewarding. But all too often, member of an organization work for weeks to put on an interesting and pleasurable event, and yet fail to capture the audience that would have made the event a success. Sometimes it’s just the breaks — too many other things going on that weekend. But sometimes people don’t attend because the publicity was too late or so lackluster that failed capture people’s imagination. Sometimes publicity fails to give a clear message about the scope and purpose of the event. A publicist is truly creative and successful when he or she can make people feel they’ll be missing something very special if they stay home.

All the news that’s fit to print

The Davis Enterprise is in the mainstream of community life — dedicated to promoting activities that will enrich our community.

editor may have questions about the information in the release, put your name and daytime phone number upper right-hand corner.

Don’t give us double vision

Adobe Stock/Stock photo But as we strive help you publicize your organization’s activities, we have a responsibility to all of our readers to provide news that is balanced, timely and newsworthy. So the basic criteria for deciding what will be printed in our newspaper are twofold: newsworthiness and reader interest. Before submitting an item to the newspaper, ask yourself, “Will other people be interested in reading about it?” It has been said that the amateur publicist thinks of the story, while the professional thinks of the audience. The creative and polished publicity person will decide what audience is to be reached and relate the story to the interest of that audience. Here’s another question to ask yourself: “If I were not a member of this organization, would this news interest me?” If your answer is no, perhaps your information belongs in the organization’s newsletter but shouldn’t be offered to a general readership.

Preparing a news release

Don’t feel that you must be an accomplished writer in order to write publicity. It is up to the

reporter or editor to revise your text to fit the needs of good newspaper style; your task is to be well organized and to present complete information so that it can be easily read and understood. The news release that will most quickly and favorably catch an editor’s eye will be: • Neatly typed with double-spacing. • Typed in upper- and lower-case letters. When releases typed in all capital letters, it’s difficult to tell when something would be capitalized in standard form. • Clear in stating the facts of the story: who are the important people involved in the event; what is to be going on; when it is happening, with specific reference to dates and times, including advance-reservation dates if appropriate; where the event will happen, with a specific and complete address; and why the story is being written. Often you’ll want to say how the event is happening — i.e., the guest speaker is in town to receive an award for his achievements. • Clear in stating a reservation deadline. Put it at the top of the story, not at the bottom, where it may be overlooked by a hurried editor.

• Checked for spelling, especially the names. A small check in pencil above a name with an unusual spelling will tell the editor the spelling has been checked and is correct. This is one of the reasons why news writers usually will not take news releases over the phone. The danger of misunderstanding the spelling is just too great. The other reason, of course, is that, except in unusual circumstances, reporters simply don’t have time to take information that way. (Nor is it helpful to call a reporter or photographer at home. Our records and appointment books are kept at The Enterprise office, and we prefer to be contacted at work, during working hours.) • Written in newspaper style, which dictates that in most cases, Mr., Mrs. or Ms. Are not used with a name. The subject is, for example, “Sally Jones” in the first reference and Jones thereafter. • Clear and complete. Do not assume that an editor knows what initials stand for. Spell out the name of your organization or association, at least on the first reference. Make sure all times and places are correctly and completely stated. And, in case the

To avoid confusion, make sure the name of the person for whom the release is intended is at the top of the page. If you don’t know the reporter’s name, indicate the subject matter (i.e., sports, campus news, politics, or arts and entertainment) so that it will more quickly reach the right person. Do not submit releases about the same event to more than one department of the paper — the “shotgun” effect — in hopes of ensuring lots of exposure. If you want to have the news in more than one section, state on each release the names of the the other to whom it’s being sent. And make sure that only one person is requesting publicity for a particular event. It is not uncommon to have tow pictures assigned for the same event, or to have the same story appear in two places in the paper on the same week, because the organization’s right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing.

Just the facts

Requiring reporters and editors to dig through disorganized news releases it fond the important facts of a story makes poor use of everyone’s time. Because of space limitations, stories often have to be cut, so information should be listed in order of declining importance. Editors traditionally cut from the bottom of the story, if cutting is necessary. The news release should carry all the basic information; the reporter simply has no time to search through organizational newsletters or brochures to get to the facts of the story. Such supplementary literature is

How to choose an aggregate company Special to The Enterprise Often overlooked, aggregates — materials such as gravel, sand and crushed stone that are used in the building trades — are the most basic construction foundations. Because they are less glamorous than other materials, aggregates are nevertheless the starting point for any building project and have been since the days of the Roman Empire. Not only the most important element in roads, bridges and

buildings, aggregates make up some 400 tons of the materials used in constructing the average home. So picking a provider of quality aggregate for your project is key. Here are some things to consider when choosing a provider.

Materials

The quality and quantity of materials available will vary with different providers, so first make sure the company is a good fit for the scope of your project. The best aggregate companies

will offer a wide range of popular and specialty products to fit your budget, whether you need gravel, limestone or granite. They also will source materials from the best quarries and processing plants that deliver extremely consistent, high-quality finished products in a range of sizes, from fine sand to large, chunky, fillergrade materials. Two factors impact the quality of aggregate: where it comes from and how it was processed. A good aggregate company will understand both those answers,

including having the expertise to know which materials are suitable for the application you have in mind.

Service

The same principle applies to every part of the buying process, too. From selecting the right aggregate materials — including having employees on staff who actually know your industry inside and out — to getting them delivered on time and on budget, customer service is critical to

making a decision. Look for an aggregate company that shows professionalism at every level, including with how their employees communicate. The best companies will return messages and phone calls promptly to help you find the answers you need in a timely manner. If you find a company with all those attributes — high-quality materials, reliable delivery options and excellent customer service — your decision will be simple.

PUBLICITY: Stretch your imagination to capture something different From Page C27 sometimes useful as reference material, but should not be offered in place of a completely, clearly written story. Flowery language with excessive use of adjectives is out of place in most news stories and an editor will remove them. We can’t say “the beautiful bride” — even though we know all dogs are beautiful — because news writer must avoid stating, or appearing stop state, their opinions. So phrases such as “worldrenowned” will invariably be deleted from publicity releases unless they can be attributed to a spokesperson or unless we’re dealing with someone like Mother Teresa or Yitzhak Perlman — so world-renowned that it is a generally accepted fact. Although we make every effort to use material submitted to The Enterprise, final decisions about when or whether to use a news release are based on space limitations and editorial judgment. We can never promise anything.

Live by the deadline

Every day there are multiple stories, all important, vying for space in The Enterprise. So a good publicity person will plan ahead, not only to give readers plenty of advance notice of an event, but to give an editor more flexibility in planning space and giving each story the best possible exposure. Deadlines for some of the special departments or columns regularly appearing in The Enterprise are: Text or photographs for the Arts pages should be submitted at least two weeks before the event. These publish on Fridays, so items submitted between Friday and the event will likely not get in. Short items for inclusion in the Sports section must be in by 5 p.m. two days before the desired date of publication. For longer stories, consult the sports editor three

days to a week ahead. Short items for news pages should in by 5 p.m. the day before they are to be published. Longer stories should be brought in several days ahead, or by special arrangement with the managing editor. Pictures to publicize a coming event should be requested two weeks before the time they should appear. Call an editor, not the photographer directly.

Make your picture say something

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but you don’t want that word to be “blah.” We all like to see ourselves, our friends and neighbors in the newspaper, but a newspaper’s job is not to show other people what we look like — your friends already know and strangers aren’t interested. The purpose of a news photo is help tell a story, in a way that is more eye-catching and dramatic than the written word. There is no story in a picture of three or four people standing around looking at the camera. There is very little story in a picture of one person passing a check or a gavel to another person, or holding up a proclamation signed by the mayor or governor. And even that little bit of story is so tired and played out as to make the reader lance at its and yawn. This is why we ask publicity people to stretch their imaginations, to help our photographers capture something and different by showing activity, by providing interesting props and backgrounds, and by being willing to have their

subjects ham it up with a little humor when appropriate. Before requesting a picture to publicize an event, ask yourself these questions: What is it that the picture — not just the caption, but the image — is meant to convey? What purpose will a picture serve that a written story could not do just as well? What would my own reaction be if I picked up the newspaper and saw this picture? The Enterprise reporters and photographers will work with you to plan and to get the most imaginative photo possible, but it is up to you to do the groundwork. Think of your work not just in terms of getting X number of people there for a photo at certain time and place, but as an artistic challenge. Using creativity will better serve your organization as well as the paper’s readers. Be ready when a photographer arrives. He or she is working on a tight schedule and can’t wait for latecomers or people who aren’t prepared. The Enterprise prefers not to have more than two or three people in most shots. Again, the goal is to get an interesting image, and this becomes difficult when the frame is crowded with too many people. There are, of course, exceptions, but the photographer must make the final decision. A special note to those who work with children: It should be firmly decided which children will be in the picture before the photographer arrives. Do not ask the photographer to make the choices. A creative youth-group leader will make sure those left out one time will be chosen first another time. Wanting to avoid disappointing the children is not a good reason for crowding too

many people into a photo, with uninteresting results.

We aim to please, but …

Because of the proliferation of organizations in the Davis-DixonWoodland-Winters area, and because space for pictures becomes more and more difficult to find, The Enterprise regrets that it will no longer take the following kinds of photos: • Pictures publicizing an event to which the public is not invited. Occasionally, such a social or newsworthy event will be covered as it happens. This will be at the discretion of the editors. • Photos showing checks being passed from one person to another, even if it’s a really large check. We can mention how much money is being given, but we prefer to show how the funds are going to be used. • Pictures of the reading of a proclamation. Again, we can mention that the mayor has proclaimed Be Kind to Toads Week or whatever, but we won’t take a photo of the proclamation, or quote the text verbatim. Show the mayor or your members working to help amphibians instead. • Photos featuring a candidate for public office once the campaign season has begun, unless the photo is part of our election coverage. • Pictures showing the passing of a gavel, or the installation of officers. We’d rather picture your new officers involved in one of your activities. • Photos of ribbon cuttings. When you’ve seen one ribbon cutting, you’ve seen them all. • Pictures to publicize rummage sales, flea markets or car washes. That we won’t take photos of these events doesn’t mean we won’t publicize them. We’ll still be happy to run short articles telling of these activities. We’d rather take photos showing what the money from such fundraisers will be used for. We have chosen these types of pictures for exclusion from our

photographer schedule because they reflect the more common types of events taking place among organization in the area. As such, they soon lose their freshness and interest. Other types of events that become too commonplace may be added. Our photographers may refuse to take a picture, or the editors may decide not to run it, if it is obvious there is no way to make it tell a story. This is why it’s important to think ahead about what the picture is to say and how to say it well. If you tell an editor you will supply props and action and do neither, the paper won’t use an uninteresting photo.

How to choose a real estate agent Special to The Enterprise

Sometimes it feels like every time you turn around you meet another real estate agent, but how does one find a great Realtor who has solid experience, credibility, and strong ethics? As with finding a delicious restaurant, a good hairstylist, or a relaxing vacation spot, look to your friends and family as an ideal source for a referral. It’s important to delineate between a real estate agent and a Realtor. A Realtor is a trademarked term that refers to a real estate agent who is an active member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the largest trade association in the United States. Realtors must adhere to a strict code of ethics founded on the principles of the “Golden Rule” requiring them to cooperate with each other to further the best interests of consumers and their clients. All California real estate agents must take courses and pass an exam from the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) in order to obtain their license to sell real estate. Every four years, continuing education and ethics courses must be taken before their license can be renewed. Finding a reliable, reputable Realtor is essential when you are considering buying or selling a home. These professionals will guide you through the complex process of negotiations, contracts, and disclosures to the desired endresult of a successfully closed sale. They also will inform you of the precise steps to take before buying or selling, and often this advance preparation is the most critical part of the process.

Where to start looking

Recommendations are one of the best ways to find a qualified real estate agent or Realtor. Ask people in your social network for referrals. Sometimes agents have a niche helping clients purchase homes (buyer’s agent), or sell them (listing agent), but most agents serve in both roles. Keep this in mind when

If you need a buyer’s agent, ask the agent for a list of their buyerrepresented sales and testimonials; if you need a listing agent, ask them for a list of their sellerrepresented sales and testimonials. While many of the skillsets needed on the buying and listing side are the same, there are some unique differences. Another great way to meet an agent is by attending open houses. Often the agent holding a house open is not the listing agent of that property and seeing them in action at an open house offers a great way to get to know them. Talking to agents at open houses is a comfortable and informal way to meet, ask questions about the market, and determine if their personality is a good fit for you.

What next?

Whether buying or selling, you’ll want to have an initial consultation

with your prospective real estate professional to ask questions and determine your comfort level while interacting with them. Do you get the feeling they are genuinely concerned about your needs, or is their primary concern their commission? Do they know the current housing market and trends? Can they negotiate a contract? Do they have strong relationships with inspectors and tradespeople who may be needed during the purchase or sale? Many buyers and sellers interview more than one agent prior to selecting one. You and your agent will work closely together over what could be a significant span of time, so it’s important that you find someone who aligns well with your needs.

Communication and planning

Your agent should be an effective communicator. If you

are selling your home, your agent should develop an effective marketing plan, explain it to you and respond to any questions or concerns you have. This plan will involve the marketing and advertising of your home. Will there be public open houses, or will your home be shown by appointment only? How will print advertising and social media be used? If you are purchasing a home, allow your agent to recommend local lenders to you so that you can get pre-approved, a vital step before you go out to look at property. With your agent you’ll want to discuss your nonnegotiable “needs” vs. negotiable “wants” as well as your budgetary limits. For example, you may “need” three bedrooms minimum so looking at twobedroom homes is out of the question; you may “want” a swimming pool but be willing to look at homes without pools.

Above all, your real estate agent should provide consistent updates on the process. If you find yourself working with an agent who ends up difficult to get ahold of or who doesn’t return texts, calls or emails, you might consider terminating your relationship and seeking a new Realtor.

Your Realtor for life

If you have a positive experience buying/selling real estate, chances are you will refer your Realtor to others and call upon him/her when you need help in the future. A great Realtor is highly connected to their community and can assist you with recommendations for many things beyond real estate. Many Realtors are connected with networks across the country and can help you find a competent Realtor in another location if you want help buying or selling elsewhere.
