VACAVILLE — The Northwind Quilt Guild is a little short on members these days. What was once a group of 120 prior to the pandemic, is now a guild of 39. Still, the quilters were able to create 10 quilts to be given to the two Fisher House facilities located at Travis Air Force Base. This
giveaway comes just six months after 20 quilts were donated. “We got a lot of quilts (Wednesday) . . . but they weren’t the right size,” said Edith Gaither, who helped organize the giveaway. Those extra donated quilts will now likely find their way to one of the other four charities to which the quilters donate – Remember a Vet, Holiday Connections, Project Linus and Kaiser Oncology. The group is currently working
on a large quilt with a patriotic theme to be auctioned off to raise money for veterans needs. The guild also makes monetary donations to other causes, including $1,000 in scholarships for high school graduates from Solano and Napa counties who are majoring in an arts course of study. FAIRFIELD — The first human case this year of West Nile virus has been found in Solano County – the 17th case since records began being kept in 2003. The Public Health Division reported Thursday that the individual is from Vacaville and is recovering. There have been seven reported human cases in California as of July 29. The worst years for Solano were five human cases in 2014 and four in 2016, the state reported. “West Nile virus is most commonly transmitted to people and animals through the bite
of a mosquito infected with the virus,” Dr. Christine Wu, deputy public health officer for Solano, said in a statement. “Residents should take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of getting an infection by using insect repellent when spending time outdoors and removing standing water sources around the home.” Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Four out of five individuals who are infected will show no symptoms. About one in five will develop mild flulike symptoms, including

Group releases plan to improve health of San Francisco Bay, Delta Todd R. Hansen
THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — A report that addresses sea level rise – including plans to protect Highway 37 – water quality and habitat protection this week was released by the the San Francisco Estuary Partnership. The 2022 San Francisco Estuary Blueprint maps out how the San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta will be managed over the next five years. “The Estuary faces immense challenges, but we have remedies in the blueprint and a serendipitous confluence of funding that can begin to implement solutions,” Caitlin Sweeney, director of the partnership, said in a statement. The partnership consists of local, state and federal agencies, nongovernmental organizations, academia and business leaders working to protect and restore the San Francisco Estuary, the group stated. The partnership was established in 1988 by the state of federal environmental protection agencies under the Clean Water Act’s National Estuary Program. It is required to develop a management plan. “We are at an exciting juncture where we can really make a difference in the health of the estuary moving forward. It’s a very exciting time for the region,” Sweeney said. The group is counting on federal funding – $24 million from the omnibus spending bill signed in March; $29 million from the infrastructure law enacted in November, includ-

One of the foundational elements of the blueprint is that it considers the Bay and the Delta as a “holistic, integrated system forming a single estuary.” “The report also underscores the need for equity in work on the estuary – the largest in western North America – while addressing resilience at the nexus of the social and ecological sciences,” the statement released by the partnership said. Issues defined in the report include the project to protect Highway 37 from sea rise, as well as other broadly defined needs in the four quadrants of the Bay Area. Among the regional takeaways in the blueprint: n North Bay: The blueprint looks at the regulatory and administrative hurdles facing complex multiple-benefit shoreline adaptation projects like Highway
37 with tasks to advance climate adaptation. These include the creation of a technical assistance “help desk” network for cities, counties and others as well as the alignment of FEMA hazard planning with climate adaptation planning. n South Bay: Millions of tons of sediment will be needed in the coming years to restore and retain tidal marshes at the edge of the bay. Tidal marshes can soak up the effects of sea level rise to protect the billions of dollars of business infrastructure in the South Bay. n East Bay: The East Bay’s tributary streams form essential pathways for wildlife, sediment and freshwater flows to reach the bay. The blueprint focuses on restoring the connections between creeks – such as Walnut Creek – and the shoreline, as well as rejuvenating channelized creek corridors – such as San Leandro Creek – to provide recreation and green space in neighborhoods that need amenities. n San Francisco: As drought has taken hold, the blueprint supports strategies that will stretch water supplies further,
including maximizing the use of recycled water when available, while ensuring fresh water continues to flow in streams and rivers for fish and wildlife habitat and cultural uses. The Association of Bay Area Governments also released information with the following objectives of the plan: n Accelerate wetland restoration, sea level rise adaptation and other multiple-benefit naturebased projects along the shoreline. n Cut through “green tape” and remove hurdles to implementing naturebased solutions. n Elevate the role of frontline and underserved communities and tribes in planning for and benefiting from a healthy, resilient estuary. n Decrease carbon emissions and increase carbon sequestration. n Reconnect and restore creeks to provide habitat and reduce flooding. n Increase use of dredged sediment and soils for flood management and restoration. “To bring full health back to the estuary, the blueprint proposes an ambitious combination of solutions, including moving sediment, restoring creeks, recycling water, removing invasive species, monitoring conditions, among other steps,” the statement said. The full plan and its recommended actions can be viewed at www. sfestuary.org/estuaryblueprint/. A blueprint video can be found at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Tgp6r2F4CW8.

Solano reps voice continued opposition to Delta tunnels Matt Miller
MMILLER@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — Congressional representatives in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region voiced their continued opposition to the proposed tunnel project in response to the recent release of the Draft Environmental Impact Report by the State Department of Water Resources. Reps. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, and Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, joined forces with Josh Harder, D-Turlock, and Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, in urging Gov. Gavin Newsome to cancel the planned construction of a tunnel under the Delta. Newsom announced in May 2019 that the Delta Tunnel Project would be downsized from two tunnels to one, but the representatives’ message continues to be “one down, one to go.” “The fact remains that any tunnel construction under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta would be a misguided, multibilliondollar boondoggle that won’t create any new water for California but will cause irreversible damage to the Delta,” the representatives said in a joint statement through a press release issued Tuesday. “As federal representatives of the Bay-Delta region, we implore Governor Newsom in the strongest possible terms to listen to the voice of the Delta counties and reconsider this project that would devastate the Delta communities and ecosystem.” The representatives believe California must
invest in water solutions that “prioritizes recycling, conservation and the creation of new storage systems” instead of a plan that they feel could destroy the Delta. “We will continue to work tirelessly to advance solutions that will improve California’s water supply and infrastructure while protecting the Delta and its historic communities,” the representatives said. Last week when the report was released, Don Nottoli, chairman of the Delta Counties Coalition, which is comprised of Solano, Contra Costa, San Joaquin, Sacramento and Yolo counties, said in a press release, “After two years, the state has released what appears to be another deficient and deeply flawed tunnel plan that would do very little to improve statewide water supplies and bring lasting harm to the Delta.” The coalition believes the “massive and costly” 14-year, more than $16 billion construction project would undoubtedly cause “irreversible environmental and ecological impacts in the Delta.” “It would also have negative economic impacts on California residents in the Bay-Delta region and beyond – especially those in underserved communities where water quality and quantity would be severely impacted,” Nottoli said in the release. The full environment impact report is available at deltaconveyanceproject.com. It is available for public view and comment through Oct. 27.

FAIRFIELD — Visitors to the Jelly Belly Factory on Wednesday received the added bonus of showing up on Mascot Day as friendly people in costumes from around the area were on hand to supply hugs, high-fives and photo opportunities. There was Dinger, the festive feline representing the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A baseball team affiliated with the San Francisco Giants. He was happy to see an old friend in the Vacaville High School Bulldog mascot. T-bird the Eagle was on hand from Travis Credit Union. Pawlette from Build-A-Bear also brought cheer. And the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano had representatives dressed as apples, grapes and avocados. Later in the day, Sourdough Sam, the prospecting cheerleader of the San Francisco 49ers, made an appearance and interacted with visitors. The event began more than 10 years ago

the visit to Jelly Belly is one of Dinger’s favorites. He even managed to find some time in between visits with children to do some scouring of the merchandise. “He loves the candy and seeing all his friends,” Finley said. “He’s excited about possibly taking the tour and doing some early Christmas shopping.” Kathy Abraham came dressed as an apple for the Food Bank and said it was great “to be part
of a community event.” She was eager to interact with the children and their parents, particularly those who could use the services of the Food Bank. Neil Zarchin, dressed as an avocado, also represented the Food Bank. He hoped to recruit new volunteers because “we are literally right next door.” Zarchin later changed his identity into a broccoli. Ina Pineda, a media relations officer at Travis Credit Union, who was assisting T-bird, said they were offering coloring books for children to help educate them on finances. “This is a wonderful event,” Pineda said. “We like to bring education to the kids. We try to teach them how to save money and balance between their wants and needs.” Pineda also promotes the credit union’s webinar that helps teenagers learn to handle their finances. by Phillip Alder no-trump. West led the heart five, and East put up the king. How should declarer have continued? In the auction, North might have rebid three clubs after his initial transfer bid. South had eight top tricks: three spades, one heart, two diamonds and two clubs. He needed only one more winner. Seeing that that could come from either black suit, declarer won the first trick with the heart ace and cashed his three top spades. When West discarded a diamond, South continued with three rounds of clubs. However, East won the last and West discarded another diamond. Now a heart through declarer’s jack-four produced four more tricks for the defense: down one. South realized that if he had taken his four minor-suit winners and exited with a diamond, West would have been endplayed to give declarer a trick with the heart jack. That would have been lucky. The best line, which alleviates guesswork, is to cross to dummy in either minor at trick two and play a spade to the eight. South keeps East, the danger hand, off the lead and sets up a fourth spade trick in the process. It is important to ensure that the enemy’s sauce piquante – their strong suit – cannot upset your stomach – I mean, your contract. COPYRIGHT: 2022, UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE

Warner Bros. axes $90M ‘Batgirl’ film Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — Warner Bros. has scrapped plans to release a nearly finished “Batgirl” movie that was planned for the streaming service HBO Max, according to two people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to speak publicly. The Burbank movie studio had finished shooting the DC superhero spinoff, which cost an estimated $90 million to make. The movie was in postproduction. But the project fell short of what the company wanted for its key comic book franchise and no longer fit with the studio’s film strategy, the sources said. “Batgirl” was originally commissioned as a straight-to-streaming
film, as part of a broader plan to use the DC franchise to boost subscriber numbers for HBO Max. At the time, Warner Bros. was part of AT&Towned WarnerMedia, run by Jason Kilar, who wanted multiple original films made specifically for the direct-to-consumer platform. Kilar left the media company ahead of its combination with Discovery Inc. in a $43 billion deal that closed this year. Now, Warner Bros. has a different corporate mandate as part of the new Warner Bros. Discovery whose chief executive, David Zaslav, has been open about his view that big movies perform better on streaming when they first premiere exclusively in movie theaters.

a federal government, philosophically storming Congress to create the Constitution, which, of course, included the office of the president and the executive branch, and shifted a lot of state powers to the newly formed government of the United States. Oh yeah, it created the authority to tax. Maybe it wasn’t a government takeover as envisioned by our fellow Americans on Jan. 6, 2021, but make no mistake, it was the second American revolution. In many ways, it changed political life in America far more than the War of Independence. And, of course, Washington, D.C., was very much the target of the Confederate Army. Gettysburg, had it gone the other way, would have very likely
been a prelude to storming the Capitol. So, bumpy roads or not, Jan. 6 was not the first takeover attempt of the U.S. government. But, make no mistake, it was an attempt to overthrow the presidency and the executive branch. There is even a group that, right now, wants a new constitutional convention to rewrite the old Constitution in order to create a more perfect conservative union. This group does not have the chops to rise to the level of the Constitution’s principal framers – James Madison, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington – and I will leave it up to others to decide if this, too, is a takeover attempt. Also, to be historically fair,
55 delegates attended that first Constitutional Convention. Of those, 39 signed the Constitution. In deference to those who remain loyal to Donald Trump, I ask only this: Substitute Hillary Clinton’s name wherever you see Trump’s name in the timeline of events and strategies and actions leading up to Jan. 6, 2021. Then tell me where you would have built the gallows for that unmistakably, for-owngood-first revolutionary and traitor to oath and country, Hillary Clinton. You can switch names back if you want. global temperatures. Then there are the measures to increase revenue. Added funding for the Internal Revenue Service would be more tolerable if it were accompanied by reform of that agency. It isn’t. And the “book minimum tax” on businesses is a terrible idea. It subjects companies to different tax codes in different years and encourages them to game the system. It reduces the effect of previous legislative efforts to lower the burden of taxes on investment, and imposes a particular burden on manufacturing. Raising the corporate income tax would have been more straightforward while doing less to distort the economy. These measures also come with an opportunity cost. We’ll probably need to raise revenue as part of a plan to contain and cover the future costs of Medicare and Social Security. Pass this bill, and these tax increases, which are relatively easy politically, won’t be available for any such plan. Democrats, naturally, think more highly of the components of this bill than I do, and are willing to overlook its flaws because of its overall purpose. But what is its overall purpose, really? It’s not fighting inflation or reducing deficits. The original point of this bill was to enact as many Democratic tax and spending wishes as could get 50 senators’ votes. There was never any more coherent idea behind it, which helps explain why Democrats have had so much trouble making the case for it. Now that imperative has been joined to the desire to salvage something out of the many months Democrats have been working on this project. They want to shore up morale as they head into the midterm elections. I wish they could find a less expensive way to do it. Ramesh Ponnuru is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist. There are seven rooms in Fisher House 1 and 16 in Fisher House 2. “It means a lot to our guests,” Ivana Jordovic, the Fisher House manager, said when she came to the Cloth Carousel in Vacaville to collect the quilts. “They’re handmade . . . so they know that the people who made them put a lot of love and time into making them.” She said the quilts help create a “home away from home” for the guests. The patients, or perhaps a family member, keep the donated quilts, although the Fisher House also has quilts that it keeps. The Cloth Carousel, owned by Adina and Paul Schwerdtfeger, along with their son, Scott, is where the night group of the guild meets – and at no charge. Gaither said the group would not be able to hold night meetings if not for the shop, which is located on Parker Street in the downtown area. “We have numerous community groups that meet here,” Adina Schwerdtfeger said. That includes the Community Grange, the newly formed Pleasants Valley Fire Safe Council, and, of course, a number of sewing groups. And

they have classes. “We start our kids sewing at age 5, boys and girls,” said Schwerdtfeger, adding there is a generational gap of mothers who do not sew largely because the schools dropped home economics. The morning group meets at the Adult Recreation Center in Fairfield. Jude Sell-Gutowski learned to sew when she was in seventh grade, but she always thought the demands of quilting were too much while working and raising her family. “I always knew I wanted to start quilting once I retired. So I invested in a good sewing machine . . . and my sister recommended I get involved with a guild,” said Sell-Gutowski, who runs the night gathering. She has been with the guild for about a year. She considers herself to be a modern quilter, but enjoys all disciplines. Right now she is working on an abstract mountain scene quilt for her daughter who lives in Truckee. Gaither has been a member of the guild since 2000, but said she is still learning. “There is always something new to learn,” she said. The longest-tenured member is Diane Salera, who has been active in sewing since she was a little girl growing up in Southern California. She had just finished making some items for her brothers and sisters when she realized she had a lot of material
left. So she found a quilt pattern she liked, adapted it to her own tastes and made her first quilt. “I still have that quilt. It’s a little tattered, but I still have it,” Salera said. Salera even has a quilt she made by hand – no machine – which she said she will not do again. And she has three machines to make sure of that. “I use every one of them,” she said, including a very old Singer Treadle from the 1920s. Salera and her husband moved from Oakland to Fairfield in the late 1980s, but both were still working. When she retired, she attended a quilting show, and right after that joined the guild.
That was 1997. The Northwind Quilt Guild is about 40 years old. There are three men who are members. Of course, Salera enjoys the quilting, but it is the relationships that are the best part. “It’s being able to be with a wonderful group of women willing to help each other. There are no jealousies and no temper tantrums,” Salera said. That was evident as the members joyfully watched as each donated quilt was pulled out and shown before being folded back up to give to Jordovic and the Fisher House facilities at Travis Air Force Base.
people who have received organ transplants, are at greater risk of developing severe illness and complications, the county stated. Reduce the risk of contracting mosquito-borne illness by following these guidelines: n Dawn and dusk: Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and evening. Residents should avoid being outside at these times. If you are outdoors, wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants and use insect repellent. n Drain standing water: Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Residents should eliminate all sources of standing water on their property and drain empty flower pots, buckets,
barrels, old car tires, rain gutters and pet bowls. If you have an ornamental pond, contact the Solano County Mosquito Abatement District at 707-437-1116 for a free mosquito fish. n DEET and other repellents: Insect repellents help keep mosquitoes from biting. Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR3535 or para-menthanediol products per the manufacturer’s instructions. n Doors and windows: Residents should ensure their doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep mosquitoes out. Repair or replace screens with tears or holes.
The Solano County Mosquito Abatement District is conducting surveillance activities in the affected area and applying what is described in the county statement as appropriate control measures. “We urge residents to remove standing water on their property to aid in our prevention and control efforts,” Richard Snyder, Solano County Mosquito Abatement District manager, said in the statement. Snyder said any unmaintained swimming pools and stagnant water should be reported by calling the district. Residents are encouraged to report dead birds at www.westnile.ca.gov or call 1-877-WNV-BIRD (1-877-968-2473).

FAIRFIELD — The tournament run at the American Legion Western Regional came to an abrupt end for the host Fairfield Expos at Yabrough Field, Thursday. Fairfield was eliminated by Kapolie Post 1 of Honolulu 10-1 in a loser's bracket game Thursday afternoon. The defeat came one day after the Expos opened the tournament with a 3-2 loss to La Cueva Post 49 of Albuquerque. "I'm the oldest and the team captain," Fairfield's Grant Kerr said. "The cards just didn't fall the way we wanted them to. We
gave our all and what happened, happened. We just couldn't get anything going and they made a lot of plays. They wanted it." The Hawaiian team scored three runs in the second inning, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and four more in the top of the seventh. They gobbled up just about every ground ball, every fly and let pitchers Jaxen Nishimura, Eddie Ogasawara and Bryan Nakano do their job keeping the Expos' bats off-balance. The three combined on a two-hitter. "All their pitching was great," Expos manager Brad Hanson said. "Their off-speed pitches were really killing us. But it was an
excellent season and everybody played positive this year. From A to Z, I was pretty happy with this team." Kerr singled on a high hopper passed first base in the in the fourth inning. Blake Bozzini delivered a single in the sixth inning. That was all the offense for Fairfield as the Expos scored just one run in the fourth inning on an RBI ground out to third base by Aidan Robles. Trevor More pitched the first 2 1/3 innings against Hawaii for Fairfield. Teagan Gonzalez worked a long 3 2/3 innings of relief. Dayton Hicks pitched the seventh. Kapolie banged around 13 hits. Kapler ejected as sinking Giants swept by Dodgers at Oracle Park By Evan Webeck
BAY AREA NEWS GROUP
SAN FRANCISCO — A heated Gabe Kapler was ejected Thursday for his first time as a Giants manager as his team stumbled their way to an eighth straight loss to the rival Dodgers. The incident that led to Kapler’s outburst came after Jarlín García struck out James Outman to end the top of the seventh and appeared to exchange a brief back-and-forth with Mookie Betts, who was in the on-deck circle. However, it was likely also a product of consecutive four-game sweeps at the hands of their rivals, who downed the Giants again Thursday, 5-3, to widen the gap in the National League West to a season-high 21.5 games. Davis’ second-inning home run, an oppositefield shot just over the arcade in right, gave them a 2-1 lead. But Betts stole it right back with a three-run blast to left in the fourth, the first batter faced by reliever John Brebbia after starter Jakob Junis allowed Outman and

The two-day tournament will be played at the Rancho Solano and Paradise Valley golf courses. There will be championship, senior, super senior and lady’s flights, competing for division titles. FAIRFIELD — Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, will co-chair a joint informational hearing next Wednesday on two competing November ballot initiatives that seek to legalize sports wagering – Propositions 26 and 27. The meeting will take
place at 1:30 p.m. in State Capitol Room 1100 in Sacramento. The hearing can also be viewed virtually at sgov.senate.ca.gov. Joining Dodd will be Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, D-Los Angeles, chairman of the Assembly Governmental Organization committee. "Legalized sports wagering could be an
opportunity for California to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for vital services in our most vulnerable communities," said Dodd, who also chairs the Senate Governmental Organization committee. "Importantly, it could also help regulate something that goes on regardless of its legality, bringing it out of the shadows and
protecting consumers. This hearing will help explain what’s being proposed so the public can make informed decisions come November." At the joint hearing of the Assembly and Senate Governmental Organization committees, the California Legislative Analyst’s Office will provide an "impartial"
review of Propositions 26 and 27, according to a press release, outlining their respective impacts on California. Proposition 26 would authorize on-site sports wagering only at physical locations operated by federally recognized Native American tribes and major race tracks. Proposition 27 would
authorize online and mobile sports wagering for gaming tribes. Public comment will be accepted at the hearing. No official positions will be taken. Dodd represents the 3rd Senate District, which includes all or portions of Solano, Napa, Yolo, Sonoma, Contra Costa and Sacramento counties.

Lance’s demeanor with offense encourages his 49ers’ coaches Cam Inman
BAY AREA NEWS GROUP
SANTA CLARA — Kyle Shanahan’s assistant coaches spread out inside Levi’s Stadium’s auditorium for 60 minutes of interviews with the media Thursday. Heck, if they can handle that pressure, then an hour game on Sundays will be a breeze, right? Actually, that annual access to Shanahan’s staff offers a treasure trove of insight. So, while players got the day off from practice, here are a dozen things we learned a week into training camp:

Trey Lance’s new quarterbacks coach, Brian Griese, is really encouraged by what he’s seeing, and even though only half of Lance’s passes were completed through seven practices, that good and bad offered a peak into how the first-year starter copes. “I’ve been really encouraged by his demeanor. That’s impressive for a young man his age. That’s not natural,” Griese said of Lance, 22. “The way he interacts with his team, the way he operates on the field, the way he responds when he makes a mistake – all those things are very, very positive, on top of his physical abilities, which are significant.” Griese is a former NFL quarterback-turnedbroadcaster and now a first-year assistant. He noted how NFL quarterbacks’ emotions can run the gamut, from the wild high of a Brett Favre to QBs who are “flatliners.” Lance is revealing his style each snap, and his ability to compartmentalize his role and responsibilities are evident. “For someone his age, 22 years old,” Griese said before stopping himself. “Look, he doesn’t have it down, guys. We’re continuing to grow at that. But he has a foundation and base that’s really impressive.”
On Garoppolo Two months ago, Griese said he’d yet to speak with Jimmy Garoppolo, who’s throwing on the side at camp

49ers quarterback Trey Lance takes part in a practice session, Wednesday, in Santa Clara while awaiting a trade or release. Have the two talked yet? “I texted him. But I left that between Jimmy and Kyle,” Griese said of Garoppolo’s awkward limbo. “I have a huge amount of respect for Jimmy. I was in a situation where I knew I wasn’t going to be on a team, and I was let go late in the process, after June 1 for salary cap reasons. I remember how hard that was. “We all want to know where we’re going to play, where we’re going to be. Now this has gone on, so it’s very difficult for Jimmy,” Griese added. “I have a lot of empathy for the situation he’s in. I know what he’s meant to this organization, to this locker room, to the Bay Area. So I hope this is resolved as soon as possible, and he finds a place that works for him. I wish nothing but the best for him.”
Master thieves Safeties account for 5-of-11 interceptions produced so far at camp by an intentionally greedy defense. “Our guys are attacking the ball more than we have in the past,” safeties coach Daniel Bullocks said. “We had nine interceptions last year, ranked 26th. We need to do a better job finishing the ball and winning at the point of attack. Our guys now are confident they can go make a play on the ball.” Safeties with interceptions: Jimmie Ward, Talanoa Hufanga, Tarvarius Moore (two) and Tayler Hawkins. By the way, Bullocks confirmed that longtime cornerback Dontae Johnson is being viewed this camp as a
safety, though he’ll also split time at nickel.
Trent the scout Trent Williams is not only an All-Pro left tackle but also a savvy scout, according to Chris Foerster, the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator. “His study of opponents is unbelievable,” Foerster said. Every week, I have the guys – it’s not an original idea – you have your guys do a scouting report. I assign, ‘You do a defensive lineman, you a defensive lineman.’ Every Friday night we read them. I don’t need a book on them, just what is our approach or attack going to be. Trent’s the best. It’s not even close, how on point he is of what (the opponent) is trying to do and what you need to do to block him.”
Horray for Turay Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek is “really happy” with his unit’s start to camp, including early signs that rookie Drake Jackson “shows up around the quarterback a lot.” One off-the-radar name to watch is defensive end Kemoko Turay, who had 12 sacks and a very serious ankle injury in his previous Colts tenure. Kocurek on Turay: “Pass rush length, pass rush get-off, explosive dude out of his staff, a guy that can bend the edge and can threaten the quarterback from an outside edge. . . . He’s consistently going to the ball with a purpose.”
Kinlaw’s comeback Javon Kinlaw’s comeback from knee reconstruction is on track,
and that excites Kocurek for what it means to his defensive line’s interior. “He’s slimmer, his body fat is down, he’s moving really good, and now it’s a matter of stacking these reps,” Kocurek (“Coach K” to some) said. “If everything keeps going on track, we’ll increase it as time goes and hopefully by Chicago (in the season opener), you’ll all see the finished product. I’m really excited. He’s big, long, explosive player that can reset the line of scrimmage and be disruptive.”
Warner’s fire As Warner has grown into the defense’s leader, he’s entering his fifth season with huge intensity, as reflected by this week’s practice fights with Brandon Aiyuk. “He’s one of the hardest working linebackers I’ve been around,” Holland said. “Guys see that. They want to know what made you good. Fred, ‘Just watch me.’ They know his goal is to make our team better.” As for Warner’s wingmen, Dre Greenlaw and Azzeez Al-Shaair, Holland added: “They all lead in different ways. Fred is more of a vocal, example leader. Greenlaw, a ‘watch me work, watch me play,’ and Azeez is the same way.”
Don’t forget J.V. Corey Undlin was rightfully singing the praises of his defensive backs’ showing in camp when he remarked: “Don’t forget about J.V.” Indeed, Jason Verrett is showing burst in his comeback from last year’s anterior cruciate ligament tear. Will he come off the physically unable to perform list by the season opener, even though the 49ers’ starters seem set with Charvarius Ward and Emmanuel Moseley? “I don’t know when. I know this: I’ll never bet against the guy. We’ll see how that plays out.” As for Ward’s arrival from the Chiefs, he’s been stellar with his coverage and an ability to learn a new scheme. “You tell him one time, it’s over. You don’t tell him twice,” Undlin said. “His recall and ability to do ‘this’ in this coverage, it’s like (instant).”
Sharks sign Ferraro to a four-year deal Tribune Content Agency SAN JOSE — Mario Ferraro will spend his mid-20s in San Jose after the Sharks announced Thursday that they’ve signed the restricted free agent defenseman to a fouryear contract. The 23-year-old Ferraro, who became an alternate captain for the Sharks last season, has grown into one of San Jose’s most reliable players on the blue line since debuting for the team in 2019-20. He stands to take on a more important role after the Sharks traded Brent Burns to Carolina last month, likely on the Sharks’ top defensive pairing.
“Mario has shown that he is a dynamic and reliable defenseman for our club, skating top-level minutes against the best competition every night and delivering solid results,” general manager Mike Grier said in a release announcing the move. The Sharks did not disclose the terms of the deal, but NHL Network insider Elliotte Friedman tweeted that it was worth an average of $3.25 million per season. Grier said last week that he was expecting to reach a deal with Ferraro soon. With just two goals and 12 assists in 63 games last year, Ferraro is not an offensive force, but he led the
Sharks in blocked shots 151 despite missing all of March with a left fibula fracture. He was third on the team in ice time per game (23:00) behind Burns (26:09) and Erik Karlsson (23:28) and will likely become the leading penalty killer after trailing only Burns last season. The Sharks drafted Ferraro, a Toronto native, in the second round (No. 49 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft out of the University of Massachusets. San Jose’s remaining RFAs are forwards Noah Gregor and Jonah Gadjovich.

Outside Lands 2022 12 must-see acts at SF’s massive festival

BAY AREA NEWS GROUP
F
ollowing last year’s Halloween weekend episode, Outside Lands is moving back to its usual early August spot in 2022. The festival offers its usual impressive collection of headliners and other top touring acts – including SZA, Green Day, Post Malone, Jack Harlow, Mitski, Weezer, Kali Uchis, Phoebe Bridgers and Lil Uzi Vert – for its three-day run, Aug. 5-7, at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Attendees probably don’t need us to spend much time slinging the virtues of the bigger-name acts. After all, those artists are likely the main reasons why fans bought passes in the first place. Yet, if you’re looking for recommendations on lesserknown acts performing at the festival, we are more than happy to oblige. Here’s a look at a dozen must-see acts listed further down on the bill. You might not know all their names – at least not yet – but they are all worth your attention at the 2022 Outside Lands. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit sfoutsidelands.com.
Day 1 n Ashe: We’ll kick off our picks on a local note and recommend that Day 1 attendees definitely make time to catch this San Jose native. Ashe grew up on a mix of Christian music radio and classic rock, attended Berklee College of Music, and now ranks among the most compelling new pop artists in the business. She is best known for the 2019 single “Moral of the Story,” which was co-written and co-produced by hit-maker Finneas O’Connell (Billie Eilish’s brother) and was used in 2020 Netflix film “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You.” The singer-songwriter’s debut full-length, “Ashlyn,” came out in 2021 and proved to be an amazing showcase for her vocal work. Her sophomore effort, “Rae,” is expected in October. Peaks Stage. Ashe also performs 10 p.m. Aug. 6 at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco. n Cory Henry: The multitalented artist, who is nothing short of a marvel on the Hammond B-3 organ, was reportedly just 6 years old when he made his debut at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater. He’d go on to perform with such jazz/R&B/rock acts as Bruce Springsteen, Boyz II Men and Kenny Garrett as well as with an assortment of gospel greats, including Yolanda Adams and Kirk Franklin. Henry would also spend time as a member of the acclaimed jazz-fusion act Snarky Puppy – earning three Grammy wins along the way. He garnered more Grammy recognition as one of the co-producers of Kanye West’s “Donda,” which was nominated (but lost) for both album of the year and best rap album in 2022. His latest solo album is 2021’s “Best of Me.” Website: coryhenry.com Set time: 12:10-1 p.m., Lands End Stage n Best Coast: This was the first band that we singled out when we started making this list of can’t-miss acts for the 2022 Outside Lands. Of course, Best Coast is far from being a hot new band and certainly doesn’t generate the type of buzz found with some of our other picks. Yet, no other act on the bill – including the any of the headliners – has put out better music over the past 13 years. During that time frame, Best Coast has released four full-length studio albums – and each has been excellent. So, those looking to immerse themselves in some gloriously sunny California indie-pop sounds – even if the famously unpredictable San Francisco weather might be offering up a completely different vibe – then definitely make plans for Best Coast. Website: bestcoast.net Set time: 7:45-8:30 p.m., Panhandle Stage n Hiatus Kaiyote: The funky neo
soul/jazz-pop outfit boosts a sizable following in its native Australia, where its last two albums – 2015’s “Choose Your Weapon” and 2021’s “Mood Valiant” – have both charted in the Top 25. Now, the rest of world is catching on to vocalist-guitarist Nai Palm and her groovy band mates. Fans include some heavy hitters in the hip-hop world – including Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, the Carters (aka, Beyonce and Jay-Z) and Drake, who have all sampled Hiatus Kaiyote in their works. Website: hiatuskaiyote.com Set time: 4:10-5 p.m., Lands End
Day 2 n KennyHoopla: The Cleveland native has stirred up a tremendous amount of excitement with the singles, EPs and one mixtape – “Survivors Guilt: The Mixtape” – he’s released over the last few years. Spin through a handful of those offerings – starting with the single “Estella” that the vocalist released with pop-punk icon Travis Barker – and it’s pretty easy to see why people think KennyHoopla, born Kenneth La’ron, could be a dominant player in the alt-rock space for years to come. That Barker collaboration hit No. 8 on the alt-rock charts, giving KennyHoopla his second top 10 offering – following “How Will I Rest in Peace if I’m Buried by a Highway?” Website: kennyhoopla.com Set times: 1:05-1:50 p.m., Lands End; 6:10-6:40 p.m., Music Den by Toyota n Larry June: One of the Bay Area’s best rappers, June has been incredibly productive during his career. The San Francisco native, who ended up attending high school in Vallejo, is just 31-years old and yet has already released more than two dozen albums, mixtapes, EPs and collaborative efforts. In 2019 alone, June released five full-length albums. Now that’s impressive. Fortunately, the quality of these efforts tends to be just as impressive as the quantity. June is a great wordsmith, with flow for days and an ear for great beats, and he certainly knows how to put it all together in the studio. Website: larryjunetfm.com Set time: 5:30-6:20 p.m., Twin Peaks n Zoe Wees: You won’t hear a better voice at the 2022 Outside

Festival From Page B3 Lands than the one belonging to this German singer-songwriter. Wees is a major talent, with incredible vocal chops and the ability to sell a song with such high-flying emotion. Her 2020 debut single, “Control,” was an international smash, hitting No. 1 in France and breaking into the Top 40 in many other countries. “Control” is one of those songs that stays with you long after you hear it, especially when the realization hits that the aching power ballad is propelled by the singer’s own anxiety over her struggle with epilepsy. Website: zoewees.com Set time: 2:203:10 p.m., Twin Peaks n Robert Glasper: The Houston native is nothing short of the one of the most important, acclaimed and respected artists of the 21st century. The phenomenal pianist – who is also an accomplished songwriter, producer, arranger and band leader – is best known for his work in the jazz realm but, really, his talents can hardly be contained by any one musical genre. Thus, it’s no surprise that he’s found success in hip-hop, neo-soul and R&B as well. He’s been nominated for nine Grammys, winning four. The first “w” came for “Black Radio,” which earned the title of best R&B album at the 2013 Grammy Awards. Website: robertglasper.com Set time: 2:50-3:40 p.m., Sutro Stage
Day 3 n Griff: The British singer-songwriter, whose birth name is Sarah Faith Griffiths joined some mighty impressive company when she was named the Rising Star at the 2021 Brit Awards. Past recipients include such notable talents as Jorja Smith, Sam Smith, Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding and, even, Adele. Listen to Griff’s debut mixtape, last year’s “One Foot in Front of the Other,” and it’s plain to see why people are expecting such big things of her. The effort is filled with winning pop tracks that nicely frame Griff’s soulful vocals. Of particular note is the lead single, “Black Hole,” which ranks among the best broken-hearted love songs we’ve heard in recent years. Website: officialgriff.com Set time: 1:502:35 p.m., Twin Peaks n Wet Leg: Hailing from the Isle of Wright, this British indie-pop/rock duo – consisting of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers – has been skyrocketing in popularity ever since the release of the debut single “Chaise Longue” in 2021. The song quickly went viral, collecting more than
6 million views on YouTube, and propelled Wet Leg to appearances on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” “Later . . . with Jools Holland” and other programs. The band quickly built on that early success with the release of its first full-length album, a 2022 eponymous effort that debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. and Australian album charts, and cracked the Top 20 in the U.S., Germany, New Zealand and other countries. Website: wetlegband.com Set time: 4-4:50 p.m., Sutro n Briston Maroney: The young alt-rock hero came to fame with the release of “Freakin’ Out on the Interstate,” the surprise smash that has collected more than 135 million spins on Spotify alone. Yet, that’s just one of a number of solid tunes this talented Tennessean has to offer. Waltz through such winners as “Small Talk,” “The Kitchen” and “Bottom of the Ocean” and you’ll see why Maroney belongs on our list of must-see acts at Outside Lands. The singer-songwriterguitarist has released several EPs as well as one full-length outing, “Sunflower,” which hit shelves in April 2021. Website: briston maroney.com Set time: 2:40-3:30 p.m., Sutro. n Amber Mark: Having already begun courting a fan base with an EP, mini-album and a number of singles, the Tennessee R&B singersongwriter finally released her full-length debut “Three Dimensions Deep” earlier this year. Of course, the offering probably sounded pretty familiar to fans by the time it hit stores, given that no less than five singles off the album – “Worth It,” “Competition,” “Foreign Things,” “What It Is” and “Softly” – had previously been released. Mark has also been heard on Montreal electro-funk act Chromeo’s fifth studio outing, “Head Over Heals,” which earned a nomination for best engineered album (non-classical) at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Website: ambermark music.com Set time: 2:30-3:15 p.m., Lands End
And don’t miss . . . n The Linda Lindas: L.A. pop-punk band act was pure dynamite at Oakland’s Mosswood Meltdown festival in July. Set time: 12-12:45 p.m. Saturday; Lands End) n Rina Sawayama: The Japanese-born, Londonraised artist’s full-length debut, “Sawayama,” was one of the best albums of 2020. Set time: 7:05-8:05 p.m. Aug. 6; Twin Peaks) n Pusha T: His latest offering, “It’s Almost Dry,” is a fine follow-up to 2018’s Grammy-nominated “Daytona.” Set time: 3:45-4:35 p.m. Aug. 8; Lands End

Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an "eligible tenant buyer," you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an "eligible bidder," you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-280-2832, or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-22-912302-AB to find the date on which the trustee's sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee's sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee's sale. If you think you may qualify as an "eligible tenant buyer" or "eligible bidder," you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser's sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary's Agent, or the Beneficiary's Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right's against the real property only. Petaluma hosts the winner of League City-Albuquerque at 7 p.m. Tucson hosts the loser of the late game at 4 p.m. Honolulu and St. George, Utah meet in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. The Expos finished the season 59-20. "Going to Fresno took a little bit of the breath out of us," Hanson said of competing at the state tournament last weekend. "We had a lot of travel and a lot to do. Last year we didn't go to state and looked a little fresher and stronger."
From Page B1 Tyrus Stephens went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Ogasawara had two hits, one being a double, with two RBI. Sy Stephens also singled twice. "It's upsetting," Expos catcher Aaron Strong said. "I thought we had a really good season. The last game we played pretty well. It was tough to get anything by them and they played good on both sides." Fairfield did manage to get six hits in the loss to La Cueva. From Page B1 Dodgers’ base-hit celebration. Betts, who was hit by a pitch in the final meeting of the four-game sweep in Los Angeles last week, appeared to take exception. As Kapler escorted García back to the dugout, Cuzzi trailed him and got his attention. When Kapler turned around, the typically even-keeled manager began to unleash into the umpire with more fury in 45 seconds than he had shown in twoplus seasons.

Kapler had been ejected four times in two seasons managing the Phillies, but Thursday marked the first time he was tossed as San Francisco’s skipper. Bench coach Kai Correa, who tried to intervene but was shoed away by Kapler, took over as acting manager for the final two-and-a-half innings. Any number of issues over these past eight games could have led to Kapler’s frustration boiling over. On Thursday, it would be easy to point to the decision to remove Junis with two outs in the fourth. The Giants open a series with the A’s Saturday.
