FAIRFIELD — The families of Latrelle Lindsay and Winifred Douglas – both 46 when they were strangled to death: Lindsay in 1980, and Douglas in 1996 – have been waiting decades to see justice done. That day may be closer than ever. James Roy Gary Sr., 76, of Fairfield, appeared in Solano County Superior

Court on Thursday to face a charge of murder for the death of Douglas, who was found by Caltrans workers in the bushes along Highway 780 near Laurel Street in rural GARY Vallejo, the Sheriff’s Office reported. “The specific relationships (to the women) are still being investigated, but I can say he lived in the same area of all

our victims,” sheriff’s Lt. Jackson Harris said in a phone interview. Douglas lived in the Oakland/ Berkeley area, the Sheriff’s Office reported in a statement released on Thursday. “In 2003, evidence from the Solano County homicide with possible DNA was sent to the California Department of Justice for DNA analysis. A single

DNA profile was found, but when loaded into the FBI’s DNA database, no match was made,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “In 2012, the Solano County Sheriff’s Office was informed that the DNA profile from the Solano County homicide matched a piece of evidence from a Union City Police Department homicide from 1980. However, still no suspect was identified. Earlier this month, Union City PD and the

Solano County Sheriff’s Office were notified that the DNA profile identified from their two cases, also matched a sex crime investigated by a North Bay police department in 2021. Detectives were able to identify a possible suspect from this newest case.” The sheriff’s statement goes on to state that, “Ultimately, detectives were able to collect a DNA sample from 76-yearold James Ray Gary

from Fairfield. This newly obtained DNA sample was submitted as comparison to the already identified DNA from the three crimes. On July 18, 2022, our office was notified that the submitted DNA sample from Gary matched all three crimes . . . A warrant was obtained for his arrest and to search his home.” Gary was arrested on that felony warrant See Cold, Page A9

Banks, who will be 56 in August, said he grew up in Fairfield and understands the city’s culture, the influence of Travis Air Force Base, where his father was stationed, and the need to improve life for the children. “So I will be out in the neighborhoods learning what we need to do,” said Banks, a 1984 Armijo High graduate who has five daughters, three sons and four grandchildren “I joined the City Council in 2008 when our town was in a crisis over the deaths of two councilmen. I stepped up to help. We now have another crisis on the West Coast: homelessness,” Moy said at the time she announced her intention to run. City Clerk Karen Rees said she expects to hear from Mayor Harry Price on Monday about whether he will seek a new term. If Price chooses to run, the filing deadline is Aug. 12. If not, it will be extended to Aug. 17. Because Moy is running for mayor, there will be a new council member sitting in the See Election, Page A9

FAIRFIELD — Solano County has converted a Covid testing site in Vallejo into a second test and treat site. “I am thrilled to see that our community has another tool to protect ourselves against Covid-19,” Supervisor Monica Brown said in a statement released by her office

on Wednesday. “Covid-19 has not gone away and we must remain vigilant to protect our residents and our businesses. I am happy that we not only have a test and treat site, but that it is located in south Vallejo, an area I am extremely proud to represent,” she said of the Norman King Center located at 545 Magazine St. “It allows people who are symp-

tomatic to go get tested . . . and be treated with Paxlovid,” Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said in a phone interview. “So it . . . allows you to get over (the disease faster), and lessens the likelihood of hospitalization,” Matyas said. ically talking about the crown jewel of comic books – Marvel superhero ones. They are unique and I will demonstrate why,” Craig went on. He had a stack of comics beside him that he held up as he went through his spiel. He started off his talk by highlighting genres that were, in his subjective view, lowest on the totem pole in terms of their worth. He held up a western comic called “Rawhide Kid” and a war book by DC called “Sgt. Rock.” Those were OK if you were stuck on a desert island and were the only choices, he said. Craig then picked up a romance comic called “Our Love Story.” He held it with the tips of his thumb and index finger like it was radioactive. He uttered one word: “No.” Now, at that point in our development, girls were becoming slightly more interesting, but none us knew how to, you know, talk to one. We were closer to the worship-fromafar stage. That was a few steps away from the Spanky and Alfalfa He-Man Woman Haters Club, but nowhere near the Actually Having a Girlfriend Zone. As Craig put the loveydovey comic down, Brian and I exchanged a glance that wordlessly said, “Say, where did Craig get that romance comic from in the first place?” That infraction of the CCCC code would be dealt with later however. Craig then detailed the usefulness of Harvey comics titles like Richie Rich, Hot Stuff, Little Lotta and many others. He

His assessment was that that they could be entertaining when eating breakfast cereals or perhaps using the lavatory. “The laboratory?” Boyd asked, confused. “Lavatory. It means the bathroom,” Craig answered and Boyd chuckled until he choked. Craig then moved on to well-known DC superhero comics like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow and others. He stressed that while they contained wonderful stories and often captivating art, they were inferior to Marvel superhero comics. The difference between the two, he floated, was that Marvel characters just seemed to be more real and had to deal with ordinary life stuff. Just like normal people, they had flaws

and sometimes made mistakes. Sure, Peter Parker was the Amazing Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but he was also a broke teenager. The Thing from the Fantastic Four had some anger management issues. Iron Man’s alter-ego Tony Stark was an alcoholic. According to Craig, Marvel Comics superheroes came across as more real and more relatable. “In closing, I believe that we all have gifts and abilities as well as flaws. So in that respect, everyone is super in their own right and what Marvel superhero comics demonstrate is that you can’t judge a book by its cover,” Craig said, setting his script down. “We sometimes just need a time and a place to shine.” He then pulled his paisley button-up shirt open at the chest to reveal underneath it the instantly recognizably black arachnid on a crimson web-covered background – Spider-Man’s logo. Underoos were never cooler than at that moment. “Thank you,” Craig said and bowed. We all stood up and clapped. Boyd then asked to borrow a Jughead comic to use in the lavatory and we all cracked up. A ‘second chance’: Oak tree thought to be extinct discovered in Texas Tribune Content Agency Somewhere on the rugged, pathless hills of Big Bend National Park, under the sweltering Texas sun, a singular tree stands apart from the rest. At least for the people who know what they are looking for. Its odds of survival are grim. The oak tree, standing stoically about 30 feet high, is scarred by fire and likely suffering from a serious fungal infection. This was the scene a group of nine researchers, led by the Morton Arboretum, in suburban Chicago, and the United States Botanic Garden, came across when they found a specimen of Quercus tardifolia, a type of oak thought to be extinct since 2011, at Big Bend on May 25. One of the researchers had called over Wesley Knapp, chief botanist at Virginiabased NatureServe. They faced a tall tree, sunlight filtering through its foliage. “And (he) held up these leaves. And immediately I was like, ’Well, we haven’t seen this,’ ” Knapp recalled. Three days in, their expedition had already encountered thousands of oaks, Knapp said. But nothing quite like this. Q. tardifolia is one of – if not the rarest – oak there is. And one of the ways to identify it is by its leaves, which look hairy. “It was kind of one of those things where no one wanted to just jump up and down immediately,” Knapp said. “But then, as we started to look at the material and feel the thickness of the leaves, noticed the hair on the undersurface, we all kind of collectively realized that this is a dead ringer for Quercus tardifolia. And then excitement started to really grow.” For the trip, researchers from across the country headed to the Lone Star State to see if they could locate the oak. Murphy Westwood, vice president of science and conservation at the Morton Arboretum, led the project alongside the United States Botanic Garden. Westwood said the research trip to Big Bend was prompted by a 2017 study of threat-

U.S. Botanic Garden/TNS

A group of researchers stands beside an oak tree, a specimen of Q. tardifolia, which was thought to be extinct by 2011. They found the rare tree on May 25 during a research trip in Big Bend, Texas. ened oaks in the United States, which cataloged 91 native oak species that are under the risk of extinction, and a 2019 report on a conservation gap analysis that identified 28 species of concern, coupled with the knowledge that Southwest Texas is a hotspot for oak diversity in the country. Some of the leaves collected from the specimen on the discovery trip were sent to the Morton Arboretum for molecular analysis, Knapp said. So scientists will study the DNA composition of the oak and pinpoint whether Q. tardifolia is its own species or if it is a “weird hybrid,” as Westwood put it. But besides excitement, the discovery of the tree also offers cause for concern: Its location makes it vulnerable to wildfires and droughts, which are more likely every year due to climate change, researchers said. “This individual tree could be on the precipice of dying,” Knapp said. The researchers said they don’t know the age of the tree because that would require a procedure to read the rings in its core, which could damage the already struggling oak. But its existence means that there may be other specimens of Q. tardifolia around. “If we found one, there’s certainly a chance that we

could find more, and we are going to go back and keep looking and we’re going to do the work to try to prevent this (tree) from disappearing,” Westwood said. The National Park Service and the group are working to protect the oak from fires and the researchers will soon search for acorns to try to help the tree breed. “So when we go back, now that we know that it’s there and we know that it’s struggling, a top, top priority for us now is to do things to mitigate the risk to that individual,” Westwood said. That includes clearing the underbrush, which can act as fuel in case of a wildfire, so that the tree is better protected from a possible blaze. Oak trees – one of which is the state tree of Illinois – carry out important ecosystem functions, Knapp and Westwood said. They are important sources of food and habitat for pollinators like butterflies and moths. In addition, they are a keystone species for other wildlife and plants, which means that the ecosystem would be very different or not exist without it. “So, preserving oaks is preserving much more than just oaks – it’s preserving pollinators, wildlife and our forests,” Knapp explained.

Studying specimens such as this endangered oak, researchers said, is necessary to prevent other organisms from suffering the same fate. According to Westwood, a discovery like this underscores that biodiversity exists beyond the Amazon rainforest and the jungles of Southeast Asia. “We have really unique and really threatened plant species right here. In our own backyard, right here, in the States, we have them here in Chicago, we have them in Texas,” she said. “We have our own sort of natural heritage and biodiversity that we can be conserving.” The rediscovered oak offers hope, too. In a world where bad news of climate change and biodiversity loss predominates in the main narrative, to Westwood, this discovery means a second chance. “We thought we lost this oak, right? We thought we lost it, and we have found it. So we have this second chance and that, I think, is the good news,” Westwood said. “We know we’re losing species to extinction all the time. Here is our opportunity. We have the technology, we have the knowledge, we have the resources to prevent another extinction and I think it is absolutely incumbent upon us to do that.”

Benicia voters to decide on 0.75 sales tax increase for road repairs Todd R. Hansen

THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

BENICIA — The city will have $5 million more each year for road repairs – that is if local voters support Measure R. City officials announced that the measure will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot. The three-quartercent increase would take Benicia’s sales tax rate to 9.125%. The revenue would support general services “repairing, paving and maintaining streets, fixing potholes, improving safe routes to schools and fixing aging storm drains. “Every dollar of the city’s sales tax revenues must be spent locally to address community needs and cannot go to the county or state,” the city said in a statement. The measure, calling for a general tax, requires a simple majority to pass. The Benicia Economic Development Board, which is responsible for identifying and

investigating economic development needs and opportunities in the city, would serve as the Citizens Oversight Committee responsible for overseeing the measure and report to the City Council how the funds are being used. A one-eighth cent countywide general sales tax increase also will appear on the ballot. The county Board of Supervisors approved that sale tax increase to generate an estimated $9 million a year for wildfire protection and prevention needs. County Voter Information Guides will be mailed to households starting Sept. 29. Vote-by-mail ballots will be delivered between Sept. 20 and Oct. 10. Man who struck, killed Caltrans worker gets 8 years in prison Todd R. Hansen

THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — A 31-year-old man on Wednesday pleaded guilty to felony hit and run causing great bodily injury in the death of a Caltrans worker on June 3. Taje Holliman also pleaded guilty to three other felonies – felony DUI, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and being a felon in possession of ammunition – and four misdemeanors including vehicular manslaughter, the Solano County District Attorney’s Office reported. He was sentenced to 8 years in state prison, the District Attorney’s statement said. The charges stem from a June 3 incident when he

struck and killed a state Department of Transportation worker along westbound Interstate 80 near Lagoon Valley Road in Vacaville. The female Caltrans worker is only identified as Q.M. in the District Attorney’s statement. Caltrans identified her as Quanda McGadney, 51, of Fairfield. She was standing outside her work vehicle when she was struck, the District Attorney reported. “As (Holliman) neared, he swerved onto the shoulder, striking (McGadney). Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene,” the District Attorney’s statement said. See Prison, Page A4

VACAVILLE — Scout, a quarter horse and member of the Solano County Sheriff’s Posse, calmly allowed children from Vacaville’s Camp Adobe to make their acquaintances Wednesday at Peña Adobe. Scout and rider Robin Turner were on hand as Wilderness 101 at Camp Adobe kicked off. It was an opportunity to meet some of the posse, and learn how horses were great partners in the wilderness back in the 1840s when the Peña family settled in Vacaville. “The kids usually have a lot of questions, like what do they eat and do they stand up all the time,” Turner said. “We let them pet the horses, answer their questions, and show them the shoes that they wear and the saddles that we use.” The posse, which has been around since 1947, currently handles public appearances such as at community ceremonies, schools, parades and law enforcement days as part of the Sheriff’s Office’s public relations work. Turner, a Vacaville native, has been with the team since 2013. Since 2015, the Peña Adobe Historical Society has partnered with the Camp Adobe program to share with campers Vacav-

On Wednesday, they also learned how to wear a bandana, studied the history of the adobe, held branding irons and shook cow bells, learned how to rope calf dummies, and witness Native American docent James Tunstall do a grass dance and learn about authentic Native American clothing. To help settle a new area and create an appropriate venue for a tribal meeting, or to secure an arena for ceremony, high grasses

had to be trampled down. Native American scouts would bless and flatten the grass with a dance. Tannalee Kendall worked with kids on how to rope those calfs. She was roped into being a docent when she recently paid a visit to Western Days. “I grew up going to rodeos in New Mexico,” Kendall said. “I came for Western Days and they asked me to show the kids how to rope, and they asked me to come back again.” Kendall is a daughter-in-law of Cecelia Peña. Peña represents the fifth generation of Vacaville pioneer Juan Felipe Peña. Peña Adobe, built in 1842 by the Peña family, who along with the Vaca family settled in Vacaville’s Lagoon Valley. The park is located at Peña Adobe Road in Vacaville’s rural southwest section just off of Interstate 80 to the left of the Lagoon Valley Park entrance. Darlene Stewart, a granddaughter of Rose Peña, was on hand Wednesday to answer any questions about the family and help the children meet the Sheriff’s Posse horses. “I like to show what a simple life they had and the hard work they put in,” Stewart said, “and how centered around family they were and how everything was so self-contained.”

Governor signs online wine auction bill Daily Republic Staff

DRNEWS@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — Legislation by Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that will expand the ability of business associations and nonprofit groups to conduct online wine auctions, and increasing fundraising potential, has been signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. “In response to the pandemic and the rapid growth of virtual events,

it makes perfect sense to expand the ability to hold online auctions,” Dodd said in a press release Wednesday. “With this new law, groups can step up much-needed fundraising, improving our economy and charitable giving while keeping our communities safe. I appreciate the governor for lending his support.” Senate Bill 1011, written by Dodd, applies to registered nonprofits and trade organizations.

It expands the number of times both groups can hold annual fundraising auctions. It also allows trade groups to conduct online auctions for up to 15 consecutive days instead of two days under current law. The bill is sponsored by Napa Valley Vintners. “This law is a service to non-profits that rely on fundraising auctions with the sale of wine or beer to fulfill their mission and support their commu-

nity,” said Linda Reiff, president and CEO of Napa Valley Vintners, in the press release. “We are grateful to Sen. Dodd for helping sponsor this legislation and to Gov. Newsom for enacting this update to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act.” Dodd represents the 3rd Senate District, which includes all or portions of Napa, Solano, Yolo, Sonoma, Contra Costa, and Sacramento counties.

Fairfield responds to 3 civil grand jury reports: Homelessness, emergencies, library service Todd R. Hansen

THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — City Councilman Scott Tonnesen praised the efforts of Shelter Solano to help homeless residents of the city. “You’re doing a great job,” Tonnessen told John Eckstrom, the chief executive officer of Shelter Inc., which operates the Shelter Solano facility on Beck Avenue. The comment came after Eckstrom addressed the council on Tuesday about a 2021-22 Solano County Civil Grand Jury report that was largely critical of the city, the shelter and local agencies in general. Eckstrom said that he hoped to work with the city to correct what he described as “a lot of misstatements” in the grand jury report. He did not elaborate on the comment. Shelter Inc. is one of the agencies from which the grand jury wanted a voluntary response to the report, but as of Wednesday, no response had been filed on the grand jury page of the Solano County Superior Court website. The City Council, as part of its consent agenda, approved the city’s response to the report, which is titled, “Shelter Solano Inc.: A Review of its Three Years Operating An Emergency Shelter in Solano County.” It also approved the city’s response to the grand jury reports, “Solano County is Not Prepared for Future

Kimberly ‘Kim’ Jackson, daughter of the late Maggie Hall and J.D. Jackson, was born May 27, 1961, on Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. Kim graduated from Fairfield High School then went on to cosmetology school to jump start her career as a master hairstylist in 1980. At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and kept Him at the center of her life as a longtime member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. In 1984, Kim gave birth to her pride and joy, her one and only son, Christopher Neil Broughton Jr. Kim was a great mother and introduced Chris to her love of being outdoors and doing activities such as gardening, fishing and camping. Kim and Chris were longtime residents of Old Suisun and were loved by everyone in the community.

Kim loved to cook, celebrate holidays, watch her favorite sports teams – San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors – and spend time with her family. She was truly the life of any party: Kim loved to laugh, dance and live life in her own way. Kim is survived by her son, Christopher Neil Broughton Jr., and wife, Shannon Broughton; granddaughter, Emika Broughton; sisters, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Izetta Jackson, Dezorah Jones and Soncerra Watson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maggie Hall (Raymond Hall) and J.D. Jackson; and her brothers, J.D. Jackson Jr. and Randle Jackson. Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Suisun Marina.

Tom Hoover Tom Hoover, 83, left this world on June 14, 2022, at his home in Stockton, California. He was born in Los Banos, California. Tom participated fully in life, continued to work well past retirement age and regularly traveled to hunt and visit the many friends he made throughout the years. Tom was well-known in the duck hunting community of California and was a wetland specialist, having worked for over 30 years on Grizzly Island for Wetland Construction of Fairfield. Tom was a loving father, grandfather, husband and friend. He will be missed. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carolyn; his daughters; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Service will be held at 11:45 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2022, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, California, with Jim Knoll officiating. It also noted it is working with Library Services regarding facility issues directly linked with the city. There were no comments during the meeting about either of those reports. However, the report on Shelter Inc. did receive some attention. In addition to his general statement, Eckstrom handed the

council members copies of the Shelter Solano Report Card. The report states that from Feb. 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022, Shelter Solano has provided services to 787 unique individuals, which amounted to 1,004 enrollments into its programs. Individuals can have more than one enrollment. Sixty percent of the individuals are male, 38.6% are female and 0.9% are transgender. The largest age group, 45.2%, are between 18 and 44, while 32.9% are 45 to 61,

14.5% are 61 or older and 7.4% are 17 or younger, the report states. The report also noted where those individuals went after leaving the shelter, including 188 into permanent housing. The largest number of shelter-served individuals, 351, ended up back on the streets or their whereabouts were unknown. Another 94 went into transitional housing, 68 went to hospitals, substance abuse centers or other institutional placements, and 14 ended up in jail, prison or juvenile deten-

FAIRFIELD — A handgun, which was reportedly stolen out of Benicia, and more than 20 grams of methamphetamine were confiscated by the Fairfield police following a Tuesday night traffic stop near the intersection of West Texas Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Emmanuel Sosa, 34, of Fairfield, was arrested on suspicion of narcotics and

weapons allegations. “The recovered gun was a Beretta and 21.4 grams of methamphetamine was recovered,” Jennifer Brantley, a department spokeswoman, noted in an email response to the Daily Republic. The traffic stop occurred about 8:20 p.m. The department reported Sosa was booked into the Solano County jail. No one by that name was listed as being in custody on Wednesday.

FAIRFIELD — Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, voted to pass H.R. 8294 Wednesday, the six-bill appropriations package that includes funding for key projects in Solano County. The projects include SolTrans battery electric commuter coaches and restoring Mare Island landmarks. “Today’s vote puts vital projects within Solano County one step closer to full funding,” Thompson said in a press release. “I worked with local leaders in Solano County to identify these projects. We know that these projects will improve the community by promoting sustainability and preserving important local landmarks. As the legislative process continues, I am committed to ensuring that these projects remain part of the final package that is sent to President Biden’s desk.” The Mare Island

tion, the report states. The grand jury report suggested the lack of oversight and accountability “opens the door to the potential for a homeless industrial complex that benefits the nonprofits without accomplishing the task at hand.” In other words, homelessness has become a billion-dollar industry that lacks the motivation to solve the problem if that means losing income. The report also warns Solano County not to stumble into the same pitfalls of San Francisco, which has spent $2.8 billion on homelessness since 2016-17 but has experienced an increase in the homeless population. However, the grand jury also states in its recommendations the need to find more funding sources to meet the service issues, not the least of which, as the report notes, is more housing. “To successfully address homelessness in Solano County requires that the county and cities work together to secure housing in their respective communities,” the report states. To that end, the council agreed to agendize the issue of whether a forensic audit on where and how homeless funds are spent needs to be conducted. No specific meeting date was set. Councilman Chuck Timm was not against the idea, but believes it is the county that needs to pay for that audit as the grand jury report indicates.

New York records first US polio case in almost a decade Tribune Content Agency ALBANY, N.Y. — New York health officials confirmed Thursday that a case of polio was recently recorded in Rockland County, the first time the highly infectious virus has been reported in the U.S. since 2013. The nearly eradicated disease, which can affect the nervous system and cause muscle weakness, is incredibly contagious and can be dangerous or even fatal for those not vaccinated. Officials encouraged anyone not up on their shots to do so immediately. “The polio vaccine is safe and effective, protecting against this potentially debilitating disease, and it has been part of the backbone of required, routine childhood immunizations recommended by health officials and public health agencies nationwide,” said State Health Department commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett. Officials did not share personal details about the infected Rockland resident, but said that viral sequencing confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the strain likely originated from somewhere outside the U.S. People infected with

polio can still spread the virus even if they are not sick as symptoms can take up to 30 days to appear. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, headache, stiffness, muscle pain and vomiting. Some polio cases can result in paralysis or death, officials warned. “Many of you may be too young to remember polio, but when I was growing up, this disease struck fear in families, including my own,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day. “The fact that it is still around decades after the vaccine was created shows you just how relentless it is. Do the right thing for your child and the greater good of your community and have your child vaccinated now.” The polio vaccine, first introduced in 1955, led to a national vaccination program that dramatically reduced cases and eventually led to the virus being completely eliminated in the U.S. by 1979. In 2000, the U.S. switched to an inactivated polio vaccine, while many other countries still use the original vaccine that includes a tiny amount of the live virus. The Rockland case shows signs of originating from a live vaccine administered somewhere outside the U.S.

FAIRFIELD — The driver of a red Subaru “made an unsafe lane change” on westbound Interstate 80 between Manuel Campus Parkway and Lagoon Valley Road, causing a three-vehicle crash that injured seven Thursday, the California Highway Patrol reported. The injuries were described by the CHP as minor, and the individuals were transported to various hospitals as a precaution.

Emergency officials take a victim to an ambulance following a multiple-vehicle accident along westbound Interstate 80 in between the Lagoon Valley Road and Manuel Campos Parkway exits, Thursday. Names and cities of residence of those involved in the crash

were not available. The incident took place about 10:10 a.m.

The Subaru sideswiped a blue Tesla which, in turn, crashed into a pickup truck towing a travel trailer, the CHP said. The pickup and the Subaru then went up the embankment and crashed through a fence onto the edge of Lyon Road, which was closed until the wreckage could be cleared away. The slow lane on Interstate 80 also was shut down until the crash scene was cleared, the CHP said.

NASA photos reveal Lake Mead water levels at lowest point since 1937 Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — Recent satellite images from NASA show the dramatic water loss that has occurred over the last 22 years at droughtstricken Lake Mead, the nation’s largest reservoir and a lifeline for California, neighboring states and Mexico. The images show how a deep blue strand of water snaking through the Nevada desert in August 2000 has drastically receded and narrowed amid the parched landscape by July of this year. Lake Mead and much of the Colorado River Basin are in the midst of a 22-year drought. Water levels at Lake Mead – formed by the Hoover Dam – are at their lowest levels since 1937, when the reservoir was still being filled. As of July 18, the lake was

Lake Mead serves approximately 25 million people in the West, including California, Arizona, Nevada, tribal lands and northern Mexico. Approximately 74% of nine Western states are experiencing some form of drought, with 35% seeing “extreme drought,” according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Over the last several months, the lake’s receding shoreline has revealed sunken boats

and human remains, including a probable homicide victim. Water levels at Lake Mead have precipitously dropped from 1,204 feet in June 2020 to 1,043 feet in June 2022, according to federal data. The last time the reservoir approached full capacity was in the summer of 1983 and 1999, nearing 1,220 feet. A white band of dried rock surrounds the lake like a bathtub ring and tells a story of where the water levels once reached. The exposed lake bed reveals a sweep-

ing pattern of cracked mud baking in the sun, mineralized areas of the lakeshore that were once underwater and littered with dead fish. The latest satellite images confirm the alarms climate scientists have sounded about climate change and overuse of the Colorado River, which feeds into Lake Mead. The current situation may present one of the worst droughts in the West in the last 1,200 years, according to climate data.

House approves measure to protect right to contraception Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — The House on Thursday passed legislation that would codify the federal right to contraception, although the measure faces slim odds in the Senate because of GOP concerns about the broadness of the bill. Supporters say the bill, which passed largely along party lines, would enshrine the right to access contraception and the right of providers to prescribe and provide information about contraception into federal law. If it’s enacted, violators could be penalized for impeding access to birth control including oral contraceptives, emergency contraceptives, long-acting reversible contraceptives and other birth control methods.

The bill passed 228-195, with eight Republicans joining 220 Democrats. Two Republicans voted present. Democrats who are worried about the potential implications of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June have pushed for weekly votes like this one to send the political message that they are exploring what options they can accomplish to protect reproductive rights. “We want to put the Republicans on record – but we’d like to put them on record in support of contraception. We want this legislation to pass in a bipartisan way,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a Wednesday news conference in support of the bill.

Democratic Sens. Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts, Mazie K. Hirono of Hawaii and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois introduced the measure’s Senate counterpart on Tuesday, though the razor-thin margins in the Senate make passage more difficult. House Democrats announced plans to hold votes to codify the right to contraception and to same-sex marriage during a hearing last week on the judicial implications of overturning the longstanding federal right to abortion under Roe v. Wade, fast-tracking both the contraception bill and the marriage equality bill to the House Rules Committee this week without a markup or legislative hearing. The marriage bill passed

267-157 on Tuesday. Contraception, which refers to preventing ovulation or embryo fertilization or implantation, is distinct from abortion, which ends an existing pregnancy, and Kaiser Family Foundation survey data published last year found that 87% of women use contraception at some point in their lifetime. OnMessage, a Republican political consulting firm, released polling Tuesday that found that 84% of likely Republican primary voters support access to contraception. That poll, conducted July 5-7, found that Republican support drops when looking at abortion, with 53.5% saying they oppose medication abortion drugs. But some House Republicans who opposed

the contraception bill sponsored by Rep. Kathy Manning, D-N.C., said they worried the legislation was too broad and could limit protections under a religious liberty law known as the Religious Restoration Freedom Act of 1993. They also worried that the bill could violate other federal and state moral protection laws. Other Republicans, meanwhile, said the bill would increase funds for abortion providers and be interpreted to cover the right to medication abortion drugs. “Practicing medicine for over 30 years in Texas, I personally prescribed a lot of contraception. I have seen the benefit that they have in the lives of women who use them,” said Rep. Michael

C. Burgess, R-Texas, an OB-GYN. “Contraception is so broadly defined that it could guarantee access to medication abortion pills or even contraceptives that do not have FDA approval.” But House Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., disagreed with that interpretation. “This bill defines contraceptives as those legally marked under the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act,” said Pallone, referring to the 1938 law that granted FDA authority. “ Nothing prevents FDA to [sic] remove unsafe products from the market,” The focus on codifying both rights comes after the Supreme Court overturned the national right to an abortion under Roe v. Wade.

Troubled bullet train project given a reprieve

I

n 2019, just weeks after being inaugurated as California’s governor, Gavin Newsom issued what many took as a death knell for the state’s troubled bullet train project. “But let’s be real,” Newsom told legislators in his first State of the State address. “The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There’s been too little oversight and not enough transparency. “Right now, there simply isn’t a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A.,” Newsom said. “I wish Dan Walters there were. However, we do have the capacity to complete a high-speed rail link between Merced and Bakersfield.” It seemed as though Newsom wanted to finish the initial phase in the San Joaquin Valley and then give up on a statewide link between the San Francisco Bay Area (and perhaps Sacramento) and Southern California. The reaction from project supporters, particularly construction unions, was swift and sharply negative and Newsom claimed that reporters misinterpreted his intentions. “I just think people in the media should pause before they run headlines and actually consider the facts and maybe even ask the person that’s stating things before they run with things,” Newsom said. “That’s the deep lesson I learned in this.” He insisted that he wasn’t abandoning a statewide system, but wanted to concentrate first on completing a working portion in the San Joaquin Valley. That limited goal, however, also has vexed the governor as costs continued to rise and work slowed to a crawl. Seizing on Newsom’s words, President Donald Trump’s administration tried to claw back a nearly $1 billion federal grant for the project that predecessor Barack Obama had awarded. When Joe Biden became president, the grant was restored. Last year, Newsom asked the Legislature to appropriate the $4.2 billion remainder of a $9.95 billion bond issue that voters approved in 2008 to build the system, but legislative leaders balked, saying, in essence, that it would be money down a rathole and would be better spent on local and regional transit projects. The stalemate over the bond money lasted for a year but in June, Newsom bought off legislative naysayers by providing $3.65 billion from the state’s huge budget surplus for the local projects in return for freeing the bond money. However, the compromise also included an inspector general’s position to oversee the High Speed Rail Authority, which outside critics have faulted for delays and cost overruns. “They know that with the inspector general that they’re going to be watched,” Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, one of the sharpest critics, said. “They’re going to be held accountable.” There has been some construction, including a bridge over the San Joaquin River near Fresno, but having tracks that will carry trains is years away and heavy expenses loom for electrification and rolling stock. Newsom has also expanded the San Joaquin section on both ends to Merced in the north and Bakersfield in the south, which carries its own price tag. It could be a decade, or more, before trains actually begin carrying passengers between the two cities, but without connecting Bakersfield to Los Angeles and Merced to San Francisco, the segment would be little more than an amusement park ride. As it stands – and as Newsom said in that 2019 speech – there are no plans to finance multi-billion-dollar extensions to make the bullet train a real transportation alternative. He seems to be content to provide enough money to maintain construction for the remainder of his governorship and leave it to his successor – or successors – to decide what to do after that.

There are some questions about what those quarterly GDP declines really mean, given that job growth has continued at a healthy pace and GDP would have risen in the first quarter if it hadn’t been for a big increase in imports that may have reflected U.S. economic strength more than weakness. But it seems pretty obvious why we pay attention to quarterly GDP changes. In retrospect, annual GDP change gives a smoother, clearer view of the medium-term trajectory of the economy, but at turns in the business cycle that view is usually out-of-date. (The chart stops short of 2020 for the reason mentioned above.) To some extent all of the economic indicators discussed here are out-ofdate, of course. The CPI is among the timeliest, but the numbers released this week are supposed to represent average prices over the entire month of June. There’s been much pointing in recent weeks to signs that inflationary pressures are receding – gasoline prices, among the biggest inflation drivers so far this year, are down 8% since mid-June. Maybe this will have an impact on the next CPI report. If it does, though, the place to look will be in the monthly changes and not the annual ones. stick to it. Dear Annie: I connected with a man on Match.com, and we’ve been dating for four months now. Though we have things in common and enjoy each other’s company, he is a workaholic and gives more attention to his business than to me. I’m not sure if he considers us a couple because he told me I could date other people as he feels bad about not having a lot of time for us. He treats me very well when we do get together, though, and is a real gentleman. What are your thoughts on this? — Lukewarm Love Dear Lukewarm: It sounds like this guy has his priorities figured out; unfortunately, you’re not at the top of that list, and for him to encourage you to see other men implies you won’t be anytime soon. (With a full-value high-card raise to three spades, East cue-bids three clubs.) South might have made a takeout double on round two, but he was confident his partner didn’t have heart length because he had not made a negative double over one spade. Now North evaluated his hand well. He had a useful fifth trump and the working diamond ace. He conveyed his enthusiasm with a three-spade cue-bid. West led the spade king, East encouraging with the eight. West continued with a low spade. Declarer ruffed, drew trumps and tried the diamond finesse. It lost, and East switched to the heart 10, but declarer won with his ace and ran the diamonds, discarding dummy’s heart loser. Curtis, Myers do battle in ‘Halloween Ends’ official trailer Tribune Content Agency “Halloween” is coming to an end, but not before one final showdown between Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Myers. The official trailer for “Halloween Ends” has arrived, promising a horrifying climax to complete the “Halloween” trilogy. Over suspenseful strings, we see a barrage of jump scares and screams, culminating in a snippet of the do-or-die struggle between Myers and Curtis’ Laurie Strode. The upcoming movie follows 2021’s “Halloween Kills” and 2018’s “Halloween,” all of which starred Curtis and were directed by David Gordon Green. Even though there have

been 12 films since the franchise’s inception (“Halloween Ends” will be No. 13), the 2018 flick was considered a direct sequel to the 1978 original. “Trick or treat?” Curtis tweeted a few minutes before the new trailer dropped Tuesday night, attempting to get fans excited. “Were you a good person today? Do you deserve some eye candy?” Last year’s “Halloween Kills” smashed its opening weekend box office, soaring past its projected $35-$40 million and landing at $50.4 million, according to estimates from Comscore, a measurement firm. “Halloween Ends” is set to be released on Oct. 14.

Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump ignored pleas from his advisers and took no action for hours to quell the violent mob storming the Capitol because he wanted them to stop or delay certification of the 2020 election results, members of the panel investigating the insurrection said. “President Trump did not fail to act,” Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger, a member of the Jan. 6 committee, said. “He chose not to act.” The committee’s prime-time hearing Thursday drew on testimony from senior aides who were in the White House with Trump during the attack describing repeated, fruitless attempts to persuade him to publicly urge his followers to leave the Capitol. It is the ninth public hearing by the committee, but Republican Liz Cheney, the vice chair, said it won’t be the last. The panel is continuing to gather evidence and hear from witnesses, which will lead to additional public hearings in September. “Doors have opened, new subpoenas have been issued, and the dam has begun to break,” Cheney said. “We have far more evidence to share with the American people, and

Election From Page One District 3 seat. That means the filing period will be extended to Aug. 17. Doug Carr, 60, a reentry court case manager for Solano County Superior Court, and David Verza have met with the city clerk about the position. “There’s a need for the kind of experience I can bring to the table for such things as homelessness, addiction issues and I also have some good ideas about bringing businesses to our fine city,” Carr said. First and foremost, however, he said security and safety are at the top of the list, especially after hearing at a recent meeting he attended in Vacaville saying they were afraid to come over to the mall in Fairfield. Verza could not be reached Thursday for comment.

Biden From Page One faith – it’s going to be OK.” A Covid-19 diagnosis for any 79-year-old is cause for concern, but Biden’s vaccination status may help him avoid serious complications. He received a fourth vaccine dose on March 30 and was found to be in good health during his annual physical last November. According to a letter from the president’s doctor released by the White House, Biden tested positive first on an antigen test and had his

more to gather.” The committee said that in numerous interviews with senior law enforcement and military leaders, Vice President Mike Pence’s staff, and D.C. government officials, none heard from Trump during the attack on the Capitol. Instead, he spent the time watching television and calling Republican senators to press them to stop or delay the electoral count, he said. Trump did nothing publicly for 187 minutes, and there is evidence Trump didn’t want a record of what he was doing during the assault on the Capitol. The White House photographer was discouraged from taking photographs of Trump, and both the presidential call log and his activity log are largely devoid of any entries for the afternoon of Jan. 6. “For 187 minutes on January 6, this man of unbridled destructive energy could not be moved,” committee Chair Bennie Thompson said. “There can be no doubt he commanded a mob, a mob he knew was heavily armed, violent and angry to march on the Capitol to try to stop the peaceful transfer of power.” Witnesses provided vivid testimony about the chaos and fear that engulfed the Capitol as Trump’s supporters

stormed the building. Within minutes of the mob’s breach of the building, the situation inside became so desperate that members of Pence’s Secret Service were making calls to their families to say goodbye, an anonymous security official testified. “The members of the VP detail at this time were starting to fear for their own lives,” the official said in recorded testimony. On Secret Service radio traffic the panel played, agents spoke of smoke in the Capitol hallways and concerns they were within minutes of being overrun and losing control of the stairwell they used to evacuate Pence from the Senate chamber area. In the midst of that, Trump posted his tweet berating Pence for not having the “courage” to overturn the election results. Matt Pottinger, a deputy national security adviser to Trump, said he decided to resign his post when he saw Trump’s Pence tweet. “I didn’t want to be associated with the events that were unfolding at the Capitol,” Pottinger told the committee. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone said he began urging Trump to say something “almost immediately after I found

out people were getting into the Capitol... in a way that was violent.” White House aides including chief of staff Mark Meadows and Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump joined him in urging Trump to act early on, Cipollone said. He said he “can’t think of anybody” who worked in the White House who didn’t want the riot to stop. When asked specifically if Trump wanted the riot to stop, Cipollone hesitated and looked at his lawyer, before declining to respond, citing executive privilege. Two veterans, Kinzinger of Illinois, who flew Air Force missions in Iraq, and Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia, a retired Navy commander, led the questioning. They cast Trump’s inaction during the assault against the president’s role as commander-inchief, describing Trump’s conduct as a “dereliction of duty.” “Why did he not take immediate action in a time of crisis? Because President Trump’s plan on January 6 was to halt or delay congress’s official proceeding to count the votes,” Kinzinger said. “The mob was accomplishing President Trump’s purpose, so of course he didn’t intervene.”

There also will be a new representative for District 1 as Councilman Chuck Timm will not return to the council. He is seeking a seat on the Solano County Board of Supervisors. He is in a Nov. 8 runoff with Suisun City Councilwoman Wanda Williams – the top vote-getter in the June primary. K. Patrice Williams, who announced her candidacy earlier in the week, George Kennedy and Nora Dizon have all started the filing process and have met with Rees. The filing period for the District 1 council seat will be extended to Aug. 17. “I am running because I am active in our community and have been for over 30 years . . . but, there is so much more that needs to be done in the 1st District,” said Kennedy, 65, director of development for a food and beverage company specializing in developing food and beverage concepts at military locations and in airports. He emphasized his

involvement in Tri Valley Little League and the development of the Cordelia Community Park, and his desire to see more done. “We have vacant lands that sit and are set aside for parks that for 25 years are still empty lots, even though the city has been collecting millions of dollars in fees from the residents for parks. I want a healthier Fairfield. That’s why I am spearheading the Allan Witt tennis courts redo and including pickleball in the design.” Dizon, a real estate broker, said, “Right now, a select number of wealthy land owners and developers are pulling strings to get results that are good for them and very bad for the residents. They even are attempting a hostile annexation of county property (Suisun Valley and rural Cordelia).” She added, “The developers have been trying to cram in high density housing without the addition of infrastructure

needed to support the additional residents: Schools are at capacity, traffic gridlock is ignored, there is no proper evacuation plan in case of fire or other emergency, there is insufficient childcare services, no senior services for the Cordelia and Green Valley district, etc.” Councilwoman Doriss Panduro is seeking a new term as the District 5 representative. She faces a challenge from Jeremy Ferrell and Scott Mulvey. Panduro said she wants an opportunity for a full four-year term – now finishing a two-year term set by the redistricting – and to continue to work on the regional homeless response efforts. She is also very involved in the redevelopment of the North Texas Street corridor. “I think there is a lot of opportunity for change and it is getting done,” Panduro said. Farrell and Mulvey could not be reached for comment.

Harris said “that there were some items related to Union City that was . . . collected.” Union City is a reference to the Lindsay homicide. She was found dead in her home. “Her cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to strangulation associated with blunt force injuries. She had also been the victim of sexual assault. At the time, no sus-

pects were identified in this killing. A DNA sample was later sent for entry and search in a law enforcement database, but no match was made,” the Sheriff’s Office reported. Details of the North Bay sexual assault were not released because, the Sheriff’s Office has been informed, the case is not likely to be prosecuted. “We are hopeful that this arrest can help bring

some closure to the families and friends that have been seeking justice for as much as 40 years,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. Anyone who may have information about the 1996 Solano County homicide is asked to call the sheriff investigations unit at 707-784-7050. Anyone with information related to the Union City case is asked to call the Union City police at 510-675-5227.

diagnosis confirmed by a subsequent PCR test. His symptoms were a runny nose, fatigue and “an occasional dry cough that started (Wednesday) evening.” “The president is fully vaccinated and twiceboosted, so I anticipate he will respond favorably, as most maximally protected patients do,” Dr. Kevin C. O’Connor, the White House physician, wrote. The White House scrubbed Biden’s schedule for the next five days. Prior to his positive test, the president had planned to travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia on Thursday before continuing on to

his home in Wilmington for the weekend. Vice President Kamala Harris tested negative on Thursday, her office said. She last spent time with Biden on Tuesday and planned to continue with her scheduled events. The president’s positive test comes amid a rise in cases nationally due to the highly contagious BA.5 variant and after a wave of high-profile Covid-19 diagnoses in Washington, as Cabinet members, senior aides and lawmakers have all contracted the virus. According to the CDC, the seven-day average of new cases increased 15.7% in the last week, while the

rate of hospitalizations also rose by 14.4%. “Because the president is fully vaccinated, double-boosted, his risk of serious illness is dramatically lower,” said Ashish Jha, the White House coronavirus coordinator, during the daily briefing. Biden, he added, “is breathing well. His oxygen level is normal.” First lady Jill Biden, despite being in close contact with the president, tested negative Thursday morning and kept her schedule, traveling to Detroit. She told reporters with her there that she’d spoken to the president. “He’s doing fine. He’s doing good,” she said.

Storylines to keep eye on with Giants in second half of season By Evan Webeck

BAY AREA NEWS GROUP

SAN FRANCISCO — The AllStar break is an abbreviated one for the Giants, who are one of eight teams that opened the second half on Thursday, rather than Friday, with a four-game set with the Dodgers. Playing the first games at Dodger Stadium since the midsummer classic, they could use whatever pixie dust Julio Rodríguez left lying around if they’re going to catch the Dodgers, who sit 12.5 games ahead in the standings. The Giants likely played themselves out of the division race in a three-week span from June 19-July 8. During that stretch, they went 4-14 while the Dodgers went 15-5, turning a 3.0-game differential into a double-digit deficit. However, the Giants are well

within striking distance of the National League wild card, thanks to a 7-2 run to end the first half. With an additional playoff spot this season, the Giants are primarily battling Atlanta (56-38, +6.5 games), San Diego (52-42, +2.5 games), Philadelphia (49-43, +0.5 games) and St. Louis (50-44, +0.5 games) for three wild card bids. In a new postseason format this season, the three wild card teams and the lowest-seeded division winner will face off in a three-game series to begin the playoffs.

Buy or sell If there was a question whether the Giants would be buyers or sellers at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, they answered it with their play over the week against Milwaukee

entering the All-Star break. When president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi met with reporters last Wednesday for a midseason rundown, he said that he would “take it personally” for the Giants to be considered sellers but that he also needed to see “internal improvements” before considering any substantial external additions. Consider that accomplished after the club went on to take three of four from the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers following those comments to pull itself within half a game of playoff position. If the Giants are firmly situated as buyers, the question then turns to what degree. Could they make a run at Juan Soto, the Nationals’ 23-year-old megastar who appears more likely to be dealt with each See Giants, Page B10

OAKLAND — Frankie Montas made a short and sharp return to the mound for the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, in a showing that would appear to allay concerns about his right shoulder. Montas, in his first start since July 3, worked three scoreless innings against the Tigers. The right-hander displayed more typical velocity after a concerning dip in that outing in Seattle. He struck out five batters before departing an eventual 5-0 A’s win in the second game of a doubleheader at the Coliseum. He exited after 53 pitches. A’s manager Mark Kotsay did not state a pitch limit for Montas pre-game but said: “Obviously, this (was) a little bit of a layoff, so we’ll have to manage how he feels today.” On July 3, Montas threw one inning, averaging 93.8 mph on his fastball, before

VACAVILLE — The Solano Thunderhawks will have six athletes competing at the U.S.A. Track and Field Association national Junior Olympics at Sacramento State next week. The competition begins at Hornet Field, Monday, and will run through Sunday, July 31, with thousands of youth athletes ages 7 to 17 competing from across the United States. The meet was held in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2021. “This is the largest class of Thunderhawk athletes we’ve had qualify

for the Junior Olympics in our 11-year history” said head coach Dan Swartz, in a press release. The Thunderhawks competed in a Regional Junior Olympic qualifying meet at Modesto Junior College June 24–26, where the top eight athletes for each event, age group, and division advanced to the national championship. Team Capital and Green Valley Middle School eighth-grader Gisselle Swartz qualified in two events, the 600meter javelin and the 800-meter event. This will be Swartz’s second See Track, Page B10

departing with shoulder tightness. He received a cortisone shot July 6 amid a 17-day stretch between starts. The A’s did not put Montas on the injured list in that time, terming the issue “inflammation.” Thursday, Montas threw fastballs at 96.8, 97.6, 98, 97.5 and 97.4 mph to the first Tigers batter he faced. Montas averaged 96.8 mph on 16 four-seam fastballs and 96.7 mph on 14 sinkers he threw – both were slightly above his season averages, per Statcast. His splitter and slider showed normal action. A candidate to be dealt before the Aug. 2 trade deadline if healthy, Montas, pitching with a number of scouts in attendance, finished three of his strikeouts on fastballs and two via splitters. On regular rest, Montas would line up for one or, possibly, two more starts before the deadline.

SAN FRANCISCO — Andre Iguodala is thinking about it. There’s little in the Warriors forward’s life that isn’t well-thought-out. Does he want to play another NBA season with the Warriors? Can he play another season? The decision will obviously have major consequences for Golden State. Iguodala might have only played 664 minutes for the Warriors last season – only 61 in the playoffs – but the future Basketball Hall of Famer showed that he has immense value to the team, even in his limited oncourt role. He will be even more valuable next season. That’s why the Warriors will hold open a roster spot for Iguodala for as long as he’s ruminating

ANALYSIS on a return. The Warriors bench for this upcoming season is young. Comically young. This organization is really pushing the “two timelines” plan to an extreme. Yes, soon-tobe-signed forward JaMychal Green is 32, but every other player on the Warriors bench is 25 or younger. In fact, the average age of the current Warriors’ bench, including Green, is 22. There will be four players on the Warriors’ bench this upcoming season who can’t legally drink. That’s going to be a handful for the Warriors’ coaching staff in a Western Conference that provides Golden State no quarter after a championship season. See Warriors, Page B10

Grijalva posts third fastest 5,000 qualifying time at Worlds Daily Republic Staff DRNEWS@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — Luis Grijalva posted a personal season-best and the third fastest overall qualifying time Thursday night for Guatemala in the men’s 5,000 meters in the World Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. The Fairfield native finished third in the faster of two heats with a time of 13 minutes,

14.04 seconds. Grijalva, an Armijo graduate, smashed the 13:18.13 he clocked last month in Oslo. His best all-time mark came in the Olympics last year in Tokyo, Japan, when he ran 13:10.09 for 12th overall. The world 5,000 finals will be Sunday night, just after 6 p.m. In order to run in the Olympics for his native Guatemala, Grijalva, a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, needed

an expedited permit to leave the country for Tokyo and Oslo. That wasn’t necessary to compete on United States soil in Eugene.

Vacaville’s Harrison drafted by Toronto VACAVILLE — Vacaville High School product Devereaux Harrison, a right-handed pitcher out

of Long Beach State University, was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the ninth round (248th pick overall) of the recent Major League Baseball Draft. Harrison had dominating 2020 and 2021 seasons, with a 1.32 and 1.57 ERA respectively. His ERA went up this year to 6.15 but he still showed enough promise to get selected. He made 17 appearances for the Dirt Bags in 2022, which

included two starts and a team-high five saves. He also batted in 11 games, hitting .179 in 28 at bats. The right-hander earned nationwide recognition after 2021. He entered the 2022 season on four preseason All-American teams, and was watch the watch list for Stopper of the Year and the Golden Spikes Award. Former Bulldog, Troy Claunch, meanwhile, went undrafted but signed a free agent contract with

the Chicago White Sox. Claunch helped guide Texas A&M to the College World Series as a catcher and had a batting average of .292, with 15 doubles, three home runs, 49 RBIs and 45 runs scored.

The 49ers openly tried trading Garoppolo before he opted for surgery on his throwing shoulder. What followed was an NFL land rush for quarterbacks, with no takers for Garoppolo, who reportedly won’t be fully cleared to throw until midAugust. He has a $24 million salary that doesn’t kick in until Week 1. The 49ers could release him, retain him for competition’s sake, see if the Browns need him upon a Deshaun Watson suspension (they reportedly aren’t interested), or magically trade him a team with a not-so-surefire QB like the New York Giants, the Houston Texans or, gulp, the Seattle Seahawks. Stashing him on the physically-unable-to-perform list seems like an option.

SANTA CLARA — Training camp is a week away, so let’s catch you up with an abridged recap of the 49ers’ offeason. On the surface, nothing major has transpired in the six months since losing the NFC Championship Game. No trade or release of Jimmy Garoppolo, mainly because of his March shoulder surgery. No multi-year contract extensions (yet) for Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa or Dre Greenlaw, their 2019 draft-class gems. No known season-ending injury or off-field chaos, that we know of to this point. There is plenty to review and ponder ahead of Tuesday’s reporting date and Wednesday’s initial practice:

Samuel reportedly sought a trade (for still-unknown reasons) weeks before the draft and he confirmed that to an ESPN reporter April 20. The 49ers publicly insisted they would not trade him. Once the draft’s opening night ended April 28, coach Kyle Shanahan said “nothing was even remotely close” in terms of trade offers. Samuel skipped the voluntary offseason program, then attended the mandatory minicamp to observe practices in upbeat fashion. “Hopefully when it’s all said and done, we’ll get the best thing for the Niners, the best for Deebo and hopefully that’s the same thing, because we’d love to keep going how we’ve been,” Shanahan said in April.

Aiyuk shines Brandon Aiyuk served as the No. 1 wide receiver, both on the 49ers’ fields in Samuel’s absence and in Trey Lance’s Southern Califor-

A’s From Page B1 Last week, Montas said he thinks it’s “a big possibility that I still get traded.” His start Thursday lowered his ERA to 3.16, with 105 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. Montas entered the game ninth among qualified American League starters in opponents’ OPS (.635) and 10th

The 49ers have not said goodbye to Jimmy Garoppolo yet and the coming weeks may decide his future. nia workouts with private coaches. “I’m trying to really maximize my spot, my role I have in this offense,” Aiyuk said in May.

Dee Ford done? Three years after a big deal (and contract) for defensive end Dee Ford, the 49ers are apparently done with him, though he hasn’t formally retired or been released yet. In June, Shanahan said Ford was cleared by his doctor, and that the 49ers’ staff still would examine him, but “I do not expect him to be on our team.”

Free agency gains Cornerback Charvarius Ward ( Kansas City Chiefs) was their big buy (three years, $40.5 million). Special teams were their other big emphasis with receiver/returner Ray-Ray McCloud (Steelers), safety George Odum (Colts) and linebacker Oren Burks ( Packers). Also signed: wide receivers Marcus Johnson (Titans) and Malik Turner (Cowboys); defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway (Eagles); defensive ends Kerry Hyder Jr. (Seahawks) and Kemoko Turay (Colts); and, tight ends Troy Fumagalli ( Patriots) and Tyler Kroft (Jets).

Free agency loses Pro Bowl left guard Laken Tomlinson ( New York Jets) cashed out after five seasons. Dolphins coach and ex-49ers assistant Mike McDaniel brought with him running back Raheem Mostert and wide receivers Trent Sherfield and River Cracraft. The Denver Broncos poached cornerback K’Waun Williams, nose tackle D.J. Jones and guard Tom Compton. Also gone: safeties Jaquiski Tartt (Eagles) and Marcell Harris (Jets), defensive linemen Arden Key (Jaguars) and Kentavius Street (Saints), wide receiver Richie James (Giants) and running back Trenton Cannon (Titans).

Retirements Center Alex Mack waited until June 3 to announce the end of his 13-year career, the last season of which came on the 49ers. Jake Brendel is Mack’s projected replacement, unless the 49ers bring in a veteran before camp (see: J.C. Tretter) or if Daniel Brunskill slides over from right guard. (Also: Frank Gore, the 49ers’ all-time leading rusher, signed a ceremonial contract to retire with the franchise on June 3, the same day as Mack.)

One-year encores Re-signed to one-year deals were former Rodriguez High School cor-

in strikeout-to-walk ratio. A matchup of the majors’ two lowestscoring offenses was, unsurprisingly, scoreless until the sixth inning. Sean Murphy, at DH for the A’s after catching Thursday’s first game, untied it with one impressive swing. Murphy drove a curveball from Tigers starter Garrett Hill for a threerun homer that flew into the open window of a center-field Coliseum suite. It

Still on the market Among last season’s 49ers who remain unsigned are wide receivers Mohamed Sanu and Travis Benjamin, cornerback Josh Norman and safety Tavon Wilson.

Draft class Having spent their first-round pick in the 2021 move up for Lance, the 49ers’ top pick this year came in the second round with USC defensive end Drake Jackson. Also drafted: running back Ty DavisPrice (LSU; third round), wide receivers Danny Gray ( SMU; 3rd), offensive linemen Spencer Burford (Texas-San Antonio; 4th) and Nick Zakelj (Fordham, 6th); cornerbacks Sam Womack (Toledo; 5th) and Tariq Castro-Fields(Penn State; 6th); defensive tackle Kalia Davis (UCF; 6th); and, quarterback Brock Purdy ( Iowa State; 7th).

Undrafted class If an undrafted rookie sneaks onto the roster or secures a practicesquad job, it’ll come from a group featuring running back Jordan Mason; linebackers Jeremiah Gemmel, Marcelino McCrary-Ball and Segun Olubi; safeties Tayler Hawkins and Leon O’Neal; offensive linemen Jason Poe, Sam Schlueter and Dohnovan West; cornerback Qwantrezz Knight; and wide receivers Taysir Mack and Tay Martin; and, defensive lineman Kevin Atkins.

Health updates Held out of practice for precautionary or rehabilitation measures were: Garoppolo (shoulder); running backs Elijah Mitchell (knee) and Ty Davis-Price; tight ends George Kittle (lower body) and Charlie Woerner(lower body); offensive linemen Mike McGlinchey (quadriceps) and Daniel Brunskill (knee tendinitis); wide receiver Danny Gray (hamstring); cornerback Charvarius Ward; defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee); and, linebackers Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Azeez Al-Shaair (knee, shoulder), Demetrius FlanniganFowles (knee tendinitis).

Coaching changes It’s the biggest shift change in Shanahan’s six seasons, particularly at run-game coordinator (out: Mike McDaniel; in: Chris Foerster); special-teams coordinator (out: Richard Hightower; in: Brian Schneider); quarterbacks (out: Rich Scangarello; in: Brian Griese); running backs (out: Bobby Turner; in: Anthony Lynn), wide receiver (out: Wes Welker; in: Leonard Hankerson); tight ends (out: Jon Embree; in: Brian Fleury).

was estimated at 447 feet and 107.8 mph off the bat. Murphy reached the All-Star break as arguably the A’s hottest hitter, batting .311 in his final 31 games. His season average climbed nearly 50 points in that span, from .193 to .241. Murphy entered Thursday in the top one-third of MLB hitters in barrel rate and expected slugging, per Statcast. The A’s, who lost

7-2 in Thursday’s first game, have split each of their three doubleheaders this season, also May 10 in Detroit and May 14 against the Angels. They are not scheduled for another. Tigers starter Tarik Skubal held their offense hitless until the fifth inning of game one, when Brown hit a pop-up that fell for a sunaided double. Oakland plays host to Texas tonight.

Port of Oakland shuttered for second day over trucker protest

US jobless claims hit eight-month high as labor market cools

Tribune Content Agency

Applications for U.S. state unemployment insurance rose for a third week to the highest since November as more companies announce job cuts, suggesting some softening in the labor market. unemployInitial ment claims increased by 7,000 to 251,000 in the week ended July 16, Labor Department data showed Thursday. The figures coincide with the reference period for the July jobs report that’s due early next month. The median estimate called for 240,000 applications in a Bloomberg survey of economists. Continuing claims for state benefits rose 51,000 to 1.38 million in the week ended July 9, the biggest weekly increase since November. Unemployment claims are rising as more companies announce job cuts amid increasing fears of a recession. The trend may continue as the Federal Reserve ratch-

A group of truckers continued to halt cargo traffic at the Port of Oakland on Wednesday deepening concerns over major supply chain disruptions at one of the country’s largest ports and a key hub for global commerce. The protest entered its third day on Wednesday after escalating to a near complete shutdown of port activity the day before. A growing chorus of protesters say they plan to continue halting cargo movement throughout the week although the loose coalition of truckers has yet to reach a final decision. At the heart of the protest is the 2019 California law AB 5, which will require about 70,000 currently independent owner-operators to register as employees of trucking and other companies. Many small business owners and independent truckers say the law could force them to shut down their operations. However, worker’s rights groups say the trucking industry is in desperate need of employee protections. The truckers and freight operators are calling on Sacramento to exempt them from AB 5. Navdeep Gillm, the owner of a small freight company, said protesters will enter talks with Port of Oakland officials on Wednesday and afterward decide whether to continue their protest at the Oakland port, which is caught in the middle

A truck is blocked by protesters at the main entrance of the Port of Oakland in Oakland, Monday. of the truckers’ dispute with Sacramento lawmakers. Port of Oakland representatives did not return multiple requests for comment. The 2019 AB 5 law was heavily backed by labor groups who say many gig workers and truckers are often classified as independent contractors even though their work should qualify them for full-time employee benefits. The law has been held up since 2020 amid legal wrangling. In June the Supreme Court declined to review a case opposing AB 5, paving the way for the state to

enforce the new system of employee classifications. Many truck drivers say the independent contractors’ model gives them flexibility and the ability to grow small trucking businesses in an industry that has become an economic engine for Sikh immigrants and their children. At nearly a century old, the Port of Oakland is one of the top three gateways on the West Coast and it handles virtually all of Northern California’s containerized imports and exports.

ets up its fight against rampant inflation with some of the largest interest-rate hikes in decades, which could ultimately curb demand for workers. On an unadjusted basis, initial claims increased to 248,991 last week. Unadjusted claims in Massachusetts rose by more than 14,000. California, South Carolina and Georgia also posted increases. In recent weeks, a slew of tech companies – including giants like Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Apple Inc., Meta Platforms Inc. and Microsoft Corp. – have said they’ll slow hiring in a time of global economic uncertainty. Firms in other industries like crypto, housing and autos have also said they’re letting workers go. The jobless claims four-week moving average, a measure which smooths out some of the volatility in the series, ticked up to 240,500, the highest since early December.

Musk signals hope on end to ‘supply chain hell’ State pension fund reports $29B loss amid market turmoil Tribune Content Agency

Tesla Inc. has been going through “supply chain hell,” but Elon Musk believes the electric-car maker stands a chance of emerging from it in the second half of the year. The chief executive officer tempered his optimism while discussing Tesla’s betterthan-expected earnings, emphasizing how challenging it’s been to secure parts and materials. Tesla sold roughly 75% of its Bitcoin holding due to concerns about the company’s liquidity last quarter, when its Shanghai plant shut for weeks. “We have the potential for a record-breaking second half of the year,” Musk said on a call with analysts Wednesday. “The past few years have been quite a few force majeures, and it’s been kind of supply chain hell for several years.” Tesla shares rose 2.6% to $761.51 as of 8:25 a.m. Thursday in New York, before the start of regular trading. The stock has fallen 30% this year. The first major US automaker to report second-quarter results said in a letter to shareholders that increasing production at its two newest plants, in Germany and Texas, will take time

Cars are lined up near the Tesla Motors factory complex in Fremont, Jan. 28, 2016. and require overcoming ongoing supply issues. Musk, 51, said that while the larger battery cells Tesla has been trying to make itself won’t be an important factor this year, the company has enough older-generation cells to meet its needs. Tesla left unchanged its plan to increase vehicle deliveries by 50% on average annually over multiple years. It will have to pick up the pace to hit that mark in the second half, as issues ranging from supply shortages and labor to logistical problems kept its factories from running at full capacity. “They are maintaining their 50% growth rate, which is a bit of a surprise. I thought they might back

off from that,” said Gene Munster of Loup Ventures. “They are doing a good job navigating a difficult environment.” Tesla posted adjusted earnings of $2.27 a share, besting the $1.83 a share average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That was below the $3.22 per share Tesla made in the first quarter, marking the first sequential profit decline since the end of 2020. Analysts are paying close attention to how quickly Tesla can ramp up output of its mass-market Model Y SUV from its new factories, and introduce its long-awaited Cybertruck pickup. Musk said on the call that Tesla is on track to start producing the truck in the middle of next year and thinks it could

be the company’s “best product ever.” Tesla said previously it delivered 254,695 vehicles worldwide in the quarter, up 27% from a year ago but down from its firstquarter record of 310,048. It was the first time in two years the company failed to increase vehicle deliveries from one quarter to the next. In April, Musk predicted the company would produce more than 1.5 million vehicles this year. Tesla had made about 564,000 through the first half. Read more: Musk Says Tesla’s Problem Is Production, Not Demand Tesla’s total revenue rose 42% from a year ago to $16.9 billion, meeting analysts’ average estimate. Sales from regulatory credits totaled $344 million, down from $679 million in the first quarter. Musk called Tesla’s dalliance in digital currencies “a sideshow to a sideshow” and said the company is open to increasing its holdings of cryptocurrencies even after it reported a Bitcoin impairment that reduced second-quarter earnings. The sale of most of Tesla’s digital assets “should not be seen as “some verdict on Bitcoin,” he said.

Tribune Content Agency The California Public Employees’ Retirement System reported a loss of more than 6% last fiscal year, its first negative investment return since the Great Recession, the state pension fund said Wednesday. At the close of the 2021-22 fiscal year, which ended June 30, the fund stood at $440 billion, a loss of nearly $30 billion from the previous year, when CalPERS reported a positive 21.3% return to bring the fund’s total to $469 billion. “Tumultuous global markets played a role in CalPERS’ first loss since the global financial crisis of 2009,” the organization said Wednesday in a release. CalPERS, which provides retirement benefits to more than 2 million members with the largest public pension fund in the U.S., reported investments in stocks dropped 13.1% in value. Fixedincome investments,

such as bonds, fell 14.5%. These “public market investments” make up nearly 80% of the fund. CalPERS’ private equity investments and real assets, however, gained more than 20% each, although those figures were as of March 31. “Our traditional diversification strategies were less effective than expected, as we saw both public equity and fixed income assets fall in tandem,” CalPERS Chief Investment Officer Nicole Musicco said in the release. As a result of the overall loss, the fund ended the fiscal year with 72% of the money it needs to meet all its financial obligations. After a banner 2020-21 fiscal year, the system was 82% funded. The loss comes as CalPERS has sought to stabilize itself, two years after previous investment chief Ben Meng stepped down abruptly.

Amazon gets the ‘Whole Foods of primary care’ with One Medical deal Bloomberg Amazon.com is done dabbling in health care. With its proposed $3.49 billion purchase of One Medical parent 1Life Healthcare Inc., the e-commerce giant is taking its biggest step yet into an industry that accounts for about onefifth of the U.S. economy. The deal announced Thursday will give Amazon relationships with hundreds of thousands of patients and their employers as well as brick-and-mortar clinics in major cities across the U.S. Combined with Amazon’s existing online pharmacy and nascent telehealth and housecall

services, the deal shows that the Seattle-based company is serious about building a comprehensive health care business. “One Medical is sort of the Whole Foods of primary care,” said Dan O’Neill, a former health care consultant who is now the commercial officer at senior-focused care company Pine Park Health. “It’s expensive but it’s a good customer experience, and it’s popular.” said One O’Neill Medical’s clinics could eventually augment Amazon’s virtual offerings by stitching together online consultations with in-person tests and treatments when needed. Such integration would

bring convenience to patients, much the way Amazon customers can return packages at Whole Foods stores. “This puts Amazon much further up the list” of entities trying to assemble vertically integrated health care businesses at a multi-billion-dollar scale, said Lisa Bielamowicz, president of consultancy Gist Healthcare. “If I’m Optum or I’m CVS-Aetna, I’m looking at this and saying, ‘these guys are serious and they’re starting to put their own pieces together in a way that will create a unified product.” Still, health industry experts say the purchase falls short of a transformative deal that will turn

Amazon into a major contender overnight. As with the company’s 2017 acquisition of Whole Foods Market, Amazon is buying a niche player in a massive market. And while the Whole Foods deal didn’t make Amazon a dominant grocer, it did sufficiently spook Amazon’s retail rivals for them to redouble efforts to build out food delivery services. It also helped turn concerns about Amazon’s market power into antitrust investigations in the U.S. and Europe. The One Medical acquisition is unlikely to be blocked by regulators. But antitrust scrutiny could dampen future health care merger prospects

for Big Tech companies, SVB Securities analysts wrote in a research note. And the deal was already prompting concerns about how much Amazon knows about its customers. The company became the world’s largest online retailer in part thanks to meticulous collection and analysis of shopping data. With One Medical, it’s set to become the custodian of medical records for hundreds of thousands of people. Regulators and lawmakers have accused Amazon of using the shopping data it collects from third-party merchants to copy their products. The company has said that it has policies against using

individual seller data to compete with them. Amazon, which declined to make executives available to discuss the deal, said the transaction won’t change One Medical’s obligations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act to protect patients’ privacy. One Medical, which has never turned a profit, has more than 8,500 business clients and about 767,000 patients, it said in a securities filing. That’s a substantial base, but hardly an Amazonscale platform.

How Ethan Hawke signed on to direct HBO’s Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward documentary

Crossword

Tribune Content Agency When actor-director Ethan Hawke was offered the chance to direct a documentary about married movie stars Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, he knew it was a huge opportunity. But he didn’t say yes, at least not at first. “My first reaction was, ‘Absolutely not,’” Hawke says on a recent video call. “I just knew it would hijack my brain. And I worried a lot.” Hawke, 51, knew a fair bit about Newman, who died at 83 in 2008, and Woodward, 92, who retired from public life after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease some years ago. He knew they’d attended the same acting classes as Marlon Brando, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. They’d made scores of movies together, often acting together as they had in the 1990 masterpiece “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge,” a film for which Hawke had auditioned. Their Newman’s Own food line had raised millions for philanthropic causes. But outside of the biggest films made by Newman and Woodward, there was a whole lot to know. “The 40 years that happened in between, the 50 years, is a lot,” Hawke says. “Like, how the hell was anybody to make sense out of that? How do you create a narrative?” Still, as “The Last Movie Stars,” the six-part docuseries that arrived on HBO Max Thursday, makes clear, they were special. Not that it was originally going to be that big of a project, Hawke says. “If they had said to me, ‘Do you want to direct a sixpart docuseries?’ I would have said no, definitely,” he says. “They said, ‘You know, we’ll just make a little two-hour documentary and we have some material for you.’ And they sent me some home movies that were really charming. “It felt like somebody daring you: ‘I dare you to make a documentary about it,’” Hawke says. “I was like, all right, I’ll jump off the high dive. I’ll take the dare.”

Finding the story There was good news and bad news regarding the materials that Hawke was provided by the Newman-Woodward family. The good news: At some point in the ’80s, Newman recorded hours of interviews for a memoir, which included the couple but also family and friends such as writer Gore Vidal, directors and frequent collaborators George Roy Hill and Martin Ritt, Woodward’s stepmother, and Newman’s first wife.

Actor Paul Newman with his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, Feb. 3, 1958. The bad: When Newman decided to ditch the memoir a few years later, he burned all the tapes, though the conversations still existed in hundreds of pages of transcripts made by Newman’s collaborator on the project, his friend, the screenwriter Stewart Stern. Hawke took the transcripts and reached out to his many actor friends to breathe life back into the stories the transcripts told. George Clooney plays Newman, Laura Linney took Woodward, and others including Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, Zoe Kazan, and Josh Newman handled different real-life characters in the transcripts. That same improvisatory spirit produced another unusual but effective technique in the documentary. As Hawke talked to his voice cast and others, including the Newman children and executive producer Martin Scorsese on Zoom, he recorded the video calls, never thinking he might use pieces of them in the documentary, he says. “I didn’t want to insert myself at all. And yet there was something, as I would Zoom with my friends, and ask them to read these parts, that was bigger than us happening that I liked,” Hawke says. “For example, just a little moment where you can tell Sam Rockwell’s remembering a tiny moment in ‘The Sting’ so vividly,” he says. “It’s probably been 25 years since he saw that movie or thought about it, but he remembers the cardplaying scene, and what a great scene it is. “You realize in the spontaneity of that moment, the impact the previous generation has had on this one, and how interconnected we all are.” The Zoom interludes end up drawing viewers into the conversations Hawke and his collaborators are having about Newman and Woodward, almost making them part

of Hawke’s quest to understand what made the couple so special. “My editor was like, ‘This might be an interesting way to make sure the audience is with us all the time,’” Hawke says. “I just embraced the moment and made it part of the documentary.”

A vulnerable star In the opening minutes of the series, Hawke tells a story about driving to church with his dad on a Sunday morning, only for his father to suggest they skip out and catch an early screening of Newman and Robert Redford in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” “I was hypnotized by him right away,” he says. “I mean, he manifested so many of the positive attributes of being male, right? No pun intended, he was just so butch, so cool, and so sensitive at the same time. And seemed kind. “It cut a path of what a positive masculinity could be.” The 1982 film “The Verdict” arrived at the time Hawke says he was falling in love with acting and seeing it when he was a 12-year-old boy left a deep impression. “It’s so rare somebody who’s like a card-carrying movie star makes themselves vulnerable the way he was in that movie,” Hawke says. A few years later, the 1986 film “The Color Of Money,” earned Newman his only acting Oscar and sent Hawke back to 1961’s “The Hustler,” the movie to which the later film was a sequel. “To watch the breadth of his career as a young actor was really powerful,” he says. “Because it makes you believe that good acting isn’t a fad, that it’s something that can be worked on, and provide you with a meaningful, substantive life.” See Hawke, Page B5

However, every now and then a deal will come along that will trip him up – today’s, for example. Against four hearts, West led the spade ace. East signaled with the queen, the textbook play to show the queen-jack (or a singleton queen). West continued with the spade king and another spade. Declarer ruffed, cashed the club ace, ruffed a club high in the dummy, played a trump to hand, ruffed the club jack high and cashed the heart jack. Now came the key play: Dummy’s spade nine was led, and when East produced the 10, declarer didn’t ruff. Instead, he discarded a diamond. East was endplayed. He could either lead a diamond into dummy’s ace-queen or concede a ruff-and-sluff. Whichever he chose, declarer had no diamond loser and 10 tricks. “Why didn’t you switch to a diamond at trick three?” asked East. “Yes, I probably should have done that,” replied West. “But why did you encourage a spade continuation? You can see the advantage in a diamond switch, so play the spade two at trick one, grateful that you have the two, not the seven.” Always consider the whole deal, not just one suit at a time. Hawke From Page B4

The actor’s actor Where Newman was a very good actor and a genuine movie star, Woodward’s reputation was the reverse, an actor’s actor – more talented than her husband, according to many in the documentary – who missed the huge commercial success of Newman. “I knew her name and I guess she was famous, but I didn’t really become aware of her until I was around 20 and “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge” came out,” Hawke says. “It’s a breathtaking performance. I remember sitting there going, ‘Wow, this woman can act.’ “You have no idea what she’s gonna say next or do next,” he says. “She can be both funny and strong and small and big at the same time.” As an acting student in New York, he sometimes saw Newman and Woodward out and about, including one night when Woodward happened to be in the audience for a production of Kenneth Lonergan’s play “The Waverly Gallery” that Hawke and his friend the director Richard Linklater went to see. “My friend Josh Hamilton was in the play and the lead actress didn’t show up for this performance, so they were going to cancel,” Hawke says. “And Josh had kind of known Joanne Woodward, I don’t know, from class or something, and he just said, ‘Well, before everybody goes, would you read the part?’ “Joanne Woodward walked on stage with a book in her hand,” he says. “She would be guided around the stage. And at the end of the night, the roof came off the building. “She was at a place where the acting was so effortless. I mean, she gave a performance on a cold read with a live audience. I’d never seen anything like it. “So that woman was just a hero to me.”

Legacy of love The length of “The Last Movie Stars” gave Hawke plenty of space to go deep into the lives of Newman and Woodward. There’s a bounty of glorious clips from films good – Woodward’s Oscar-winning role in “The Three Faces

of Eve” – to those less so: “The Towering Inferno,” anyone? There’s also space to explore the harder chapters in a marriage that lasted 50 years – Newman’s drinking, Woodward’s disappointment in setting aside her career to care for her children, the loss of their son Scott to drugs. It’s clear, though, by the end of the series that their love for each other was always strong enough to weather the rough times, Hawke says. “It was wonderful to discover how passionate they were for each other,” Hawke says of the unexpected pathways his research led the story. “I mean, these people were lovers. You think of husbands and wives often, and it’s just like, ‘Oh, they’re married.’ “But these people were loved for a long time, and that was kind of delightful,” he says. “Reading his transcripts, they loved to be with each other and kiss each other and touch each other, and they longed for each other when they were apart. “There’s a great old interview that didn’t make the final cut where he’s with Larry King, and Paul’s old,” Hawke says. “He’s old, and Larry King says, ‘Well, it’s nice to hear that a sexual relationship can sustain.’ And Paul goes, ‘Let’s hope!’ “That part was charming,” Hawke says, laughing. Near the end of the film, Hawke visited the couple’s longtime Connecticut home and filmed inside the renovated barn where Newman and Woodward screened movies, hosted parties, and displayed all the many awards they’d received in their careers. “I left there profoundly depressed because all these things that I’d coveted or thought would give life meaning are just sitting there collecting dust,” he says. “But then I had this realization that those awards weren’t for us, or they weren’t for now. They were for them in that moment, for them and them only. “And then I had this realization that the biggest legacy they have is the way they lived their life, and the impact that can have on all of us,” Hawke says. “I was kind of like, That’s what the movie should feel like when it’s over.”

The Warriors’ official coaching staff, that is. As he battled injuries and the loss of a few steps, Iguodala, 38, became an unofficial coach last season. “Andre in particular was just incredible this year and continues to be so with his counseling and advice,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said before the NBA Finals. “And he does it in a way only Andre can. With humor and sarcasm and cryptic messaging.” Upon winning the title, Kerr said: “Andre was just a really big part of this with his guidance and leadership and wisdom.” Iguodala, for what it’s worth, doesn’t want to be associated with a player-coach role. He told NBC Sports earlier this month that he has to “kill” that terminology. So let’s instead call Iguodala a player-mentor. The Warriors’ forward is the keeper of the Warriors Way. He once declared that he plays to “protect Steph [Curry]’s legacy.” Few players in the NBA know the league – and all that comes with being a professional basketball player – as well as Iguodala. Fewer understand what makes the Warriors the NBA’s preeminent franchise. Iguodala can still provide oncourt value to the Dubs. The team – which plans to only carry only 14 players because of luxury tax concerns – could still use a wing and a depth point guard. But it’s that wisdom that is even more valuable to the Warriors next season. Yes, they could easily go out and get a younger player to sign the veteran minimum deal they can offer Iguodala. That money – taxed, of course – wouldn’t go as far. Not when Jonathan Kuminga

passing day? That’s an investment in the present and future – Soto is teamcontrolled through 2025, even without signing an extension (he reportedly turned down a 15-year, $440 million offer from Washington) – but would cost a fortune in prospects and money. Perhaps Zaidi is more content to nibble around the edges – a bullpen arm here, some position player depth there – with a roster that he feels hasn’t played up to its potential.

Brown is now the Kings’ head coach. The Warriors need someone in a hybrid role on that bench – someone who can instruct, mentor, and guide but also give the Dubs 10 minutes and a couple of buckets on occasion. Yes, there are others who could do it, but no one can do it quite like Iguodala. Ever the businessman, I’d imagine that Iguodala will ask for a significant pay raise ahead of this year. He is doing two jobs, after all, he’ll say in his desert-dry tone. Frankly, he’d deserve it. But the

Warriors are a business, and I don’t think that conversation would go far. But perhaps Iguodala would return – on the veteran minimum, of course – out of loyalty. Iguodala recently had Warriors’ governor Joe Lacob on the podcast he co-hosts with former NBA forward Evan Turner. On the podcast, Lacob railed against the NBA’s luxury tax system, calling it “very unfair.” (It is, Joe!) The NBA heard the pod and fined Lacob $500,000 for that comment. Even for someone as rich as Lacob, that’s a big chunk of change. I’m sure Iguodala feels a little remorse about it all. Enough remorse that he’ll come back for another year to make it up to Lacob? Probably not. But it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Because the Warriors really could use Iguodala back for next season.

Is Brandon Belt fixed? What about Joey Bart? The Giants’ two biggest downgrades in their lineup from last season have come at first base and catcher, but each showed signs of improvement in the days leading up to the AllStar break. In his final seven games before the break, Brandon Belt came to the plate 23 times and reached base in 13 of those opportunities, including three that ended right back where they started. The batting line – .524/.565/1.048 (a 1.613 OPS) – was the apparent result of some adjustments made with hitting coach Justin Viele in San Diego. A more significant set of adjustments is already paying off for Joey Bart, too. Since returning from a month at Triple-A with a reworked swing, Bart has batted .276/.344/.552 (an

How does the bullpen hold up? One result of a shortened spring training and Gabe Kapler’s overall managerial tendencies has been a reliance on the bullpen. Until May 30, Giants pitchers had thrown 100 pitches in three starts. They were all Carlos Rodón. Even now, after 91 games, Giants starters have completed six innings in 35 of them. As a team, the Giants haven’t relied on their relievers in any disproportionate amount. They’ve gotten 352 2/3 innings from their bullpen, which ranks 11th in MLB. However, no team turns to the same selection of arms as frequently as the Giants. Three relievers rank in the top 20 of appearances, more than any other team. With 43 games, righthander John Brebbia has appeared in as many contests as any reliever in the majors. Tyler Rogers is tied for seventh, with 41 appearances. And Camilo Doval is right behind, at 40, tied for 11th. Of the 10 teams to use their bullpen more frequently, seven have lower ERAs than the Giants’ 4.19 mark (another point of regression from last season, when the group led the majors with a 2.99 ERA).
