FAIRFIELD — A 30-year-old Fairfield man was jailed last week in connection with the July 7, in-home armed robbery and assault of a 70-year-old resident. The Fairfield Police Department was able to use the Flock Safety System license plate reading capability to create a kind of vehicle profile that helped detectives locate Omari D. Garland, who had been identified as a possible suspect in the case. Garland was arrested on Thursday and booked into county jail on suspicion of the felony, the police reported. “It’s been phenomenal,” Fairfield police Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen
said about the system. He helped the department roll it out last June. “We started testing it out with a couple of (officers) in June and. it went fully live in July,” Jacobsen said. “The first six months, we had over 60 arrests.” He said he remembers a homicide suspect out of Stockton was arrested after the vehicle he was driving triggered the system. The police also got a gun off the street after arresting the person in the car with him. Flock is used by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office as well as six of the seven city police departments. Dixon is the lone city without a Flock contract. Earlier last week, the Flock system in Suisun City alerted officers on a vehicle out of San Fran-
cisco, which lead to the arrest of Tamia Young, 23, of Suisun City, on several warrants related to retail thefts in six counties, the police department posted on its Facebook page. “Suisun City Police Department along with San Francisco Police Department worked together in the arrest and Young was extradited to San Francisco for booking,” the Facebook post states. Fairfield has 56 Flock cameras. The cost to the city for the cameras and service was not immediately available, but a Flock spokeswoman said the average cost is about $2,500 per camera per year, and that covers software and other services. She said the cost to Fairfield See Flock, Page A8
White House considers emergency declaration to fight climate change Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden will announce executive action to confront climate change after a key senator blocked legislation, but he’s holding off for now on an emergency decree that would allow him to marshal sweeping powers – and billions of federal dollars – against global warming. Biden will outline his moves in a speech Wednesday at a shuttered coal-fired power plant in Massachusetts, vowing that he won’t allow a congressional impasse on climate legislation to prevent urgent work to slow rising global temperatures, according to people familiar with the matter. White House officials are still weighing a separate declaration that climate

The emergency order is one of several tactics now
under deliberation, as the White House weighs strategies to demonstrate Biden’s commitment to clean energy without jeopardizing ongoing talks on health care legislation in Congress. Any move to deploy emergency powers against fossil fuels risks alienating Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat who last week withdrew his support for climate and tax legislation but whose vote is still critical to pass the health measure under fast-track budget reconciliation procedures. Nevertheless, an emergency order would be a potent way for Biden to show he’s committed to addressing the climate threat before November’s pivotal midterm elections. After Manchin slammed the brakes on clean energy and climate provisions in the reconciliation package last week,

FAIRFIELD — One confirmed case of the rare monkeypox disease has been identified in Solano County, and there are two probable cases pending verification with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Public Health is monitoring the situation closely to ensure the health and safety of Solano County residents and limit the spread of the disease,” Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said in a statement released Tuesday. “Though the risk of infection is very low, we encourage people who may have been exposed to contact their medical provider immediately and watch for symptoms.” Matyas, in a phone interview, MATYAS said that the individual with the confirmed case was hospitalized for a short period, and because of that, the virus actually was identified in a commercial laboratory and did not require CDC confirmation. The two probable cases actually came to the attention of Public Health earlier. That virus sample was sent to the state and then on to the CDC, Matyas said. But Matyas emphasized that the general public is not at a high risk of transmission because it takes “sustained physical contact” to get the disease, which is why it is often passed along during sexual activity. “But it is not a sexually transmitted disease,” Matyas said. “Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus, which is related to the smallpox virus. discussions accelerated among Biden’s allies and within the White House about steps the president could take unilaterally. The president has insisted he would “not back down” from the fight. “If the Senate will not move to tackle the climate crisis and strengthen our domestic clean energy industry, I will take strong executive action to meet this moment,” Biden said in a statement Friday
WASHINGTON — The House passed a bill Tuesday to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and codify legal recognition for interracial and same-sex marriages nationwide, part of the legislative response from Democrats to recent Supreme Court decisions. The House voted 267-157, mostly along party lines, with support from Democrats and 47 Republicans, to send the bill to the Senate. The measure would repeal the 1996 law that prevented the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, as well as mandate that all states honor out-of-state marriages regardless of the race, gender or sexual orientation of the couple. Democrats argued the measure was needed following last month’s Supreme Court ruling that reversed Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that established a constitutional right to an abortion. cratic spirit alive. At its core a representative democracy like ours is inherently messy and animated through principled debates regarding the rights of individuals versus the welfare of society at-large. It is, by design, uncomfortable, malleable, imperfect, and inclusive. However, to flourish (and survive) democracy must not only be understood as a model of government, but it must be embodied in the attitudes, behaviors, and common values of all Americans. At its best, democracy is a way of life, not an abstract political system too often perceived by citizens as being unresponsive and irrelevant to their individual or collective interests. There is also a moral basis to democracy anchored in basic human rights that shapes how we make judgments, choices, and important decisions; how we treat others, and how we perceive our roles and obligations as members of civil society. While these are indeed grand and noble ideas that look great on paper, an important question
is how can our citizens learn to personify and integrate democratic ideals into their daily lives? After all, democracy can exist in families, community organizations, business enterprises, as well as in governing bodies and systems. To be most effective the development of democratic values begins with young children. Education professor Dan Gartrell described a five-part model for developing democratic life skills by helping children: 1. Find acceptance as a member of a group and as a worthy individual. 2. Express strong emotions in non-hurting ways. 3. Solve problems creatively, independently, and in cooperation with others. 4. Accept differing human qualities in others. 5. Think intelligently and ethically. Schools that teach students the skills to participate actively in democracy are themselves institutions that reflect democratic principles not only in
word, but also in deed. John Dewey and many others have critiqued authoritarian and anti-democratic modes of education. Instead they propose a “curriculum of place” that promotes student engagement through cooperative/collaborative learning, project-based learning, service learning, community-based learning, and various forms of experiential learning. Finally, learning activities must cultivate metacognitive reflection, critical inquiry, principled dissent, rigorous discourse, and evidentiary debate (e.g., activities central to wellfunctioning democracies). Democracy is not a guaranteed feature of American life. It is an acquired taste that grows from the inside out and requires constant nourishment to flourish. ‘Songs 4 Mom’; tapes, recordings can remind us of those we love
M
emories tend to surface like starfish from the deep to remind us of things we need to know. Last week, my husband and I visited his son, Joe, wife Juli and their three children. We stayed at the home of Juli’s dad and his partner, who live near them, and were treated like royalty. It was a far cry from the days my big Southern family would pile into my grandfolks’ place and I’d have to sleep in the bathtub with several cousins. Family visits don’t need to be luxury vacations. They just need to happen often enough so we’ll know each other well and never forget that we’re a family. We stayed two nights and might’ve stayed longer. But my son and his wife, and their two babes, were due to visit us soon and I had things to do. It had been three months since our last visit. I could hardly wait. When we got home, I checked my phone and saw a missed call and message from my son. He’s an actor on a TV show that’s been on
a break before starting a new season. He said he’d just learned he needs to be back at work sooner than Sharon Randall expected. So they had to postpone the visit. I took a minute to get past the disappointment. I knew he was disappointed, too, and I didn’t want him to hear it in my voice. Then I called him to say, not to worry, I understand, we’ll get together soon. I meant what I said. But I missed my boy. I also missed his wife and their sweet babes. But for some reason, I especially missed Josh. It was strangely how I felt the day he left home for college. His dad and I helped haul his stuff into his new room, met his roommates, hugged him hard, said goodbye and drove away. I did it without shedding a tear. Until he was out of sight. Then I bawled like a newborn calf. I’d spent 18 years raising that boy. He wasn’t a soldier going off to war. He was a high school graduate, smart,
dependable and mature, going off to college to do things I didn’t want to think about. I wasn’t worried about him. Maybe I should’ve been. But I just missed him. I wanted us always to know each other and stay as close as we had always been. I didn’t want him ever to . . . forget me. That’s how I felt that day as I watched him through the rear window waving goodbye from his new life. It seems silly now. In many ways, we’ve grown even closer over the years. And yet, I felt that way again when I heard they weren’t coming to see us. The next day, my husband and I were doing errands when I heard a song on the radio that brought back this memory: The first time Josh came home from college, I was waiting. He drove up with a big grin and a back seat full of dirty laundry. “Hey, Mama,” he said, hugging me hard. When he hugs you, you know you’ve been hugged. “I brought you something.” “I see it,” I said, laughing and nodding at the back seat. “Not that,” he said,
“this.” He handed me a cassette tape he had titled, “Songs 4 Mom.” “I think you’ll like it,” he said. I didn’t like it. I loved it. He had taped some of my favorite songs by Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, the Temptations and others, plus a few he said he knew I’d like if I heard them. “Where did you find all these?” “I had some of them,” he said, “and borrowed the rest.”
“How did you know all those songs were my favorites?” He gave me a look, laughed and said, “I know you, Mama.” The tape included “Addicted to Love” by Robert Palmer. It was the song I’d heard on the radio that prompted that memory. I played that tape countless times, especially whenever the boy left to go back to college. I have no idea how I lost it. I’m not good at keeping up with things. But I am
fierce about hanging on to the people I love. We need to know we’ll always be known and remembered by those who matter most to us. I lost that tape, but kept its memory. And memories can help us remember what is true. Sharon Randall is the author of “The World and Then Some.” She can be reached at P.O. Box 922, Carmel Valley CA 93924 or www.sharonrandall.com.

FAIRFIELD — The coronavirus case numbers are dropping in Solano County, but there has been an uptick in hospitalizations and another Covid-related death was reported. A woman, older than 65 and living at home, is the 429th reported Covid-19 death in the county, and the fourth from the latest spring surge, Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said in a phone interview on Monday. She was reported to be in
very poor health. There have been 166 deaths since July 1, 2021, when vaccines have been readily available to the public, and 40 of those deaths were individuals who had been vaccinated, Matyas said. The number of residents who have tested positive and are in area hospitals also increased, from 39 on Thursday to 43 on Monday, and there are four patients – up from one – in the intensive care units, the county reported. FAIRFIELD — K. Patrice Williams has announced her intention to run for the District 1 seat on the Fairfield City Council. The district covers the Cordelia and Green Valley areas of the city. Her goal, she said in the statement announcing her candidacy, is “to make Fairfield a thriving and diverse hometown where people live, work play and prosper – not simply a bedroom community.” Williams, in a phone interview, said she will bring a different kind of voice to the council, someone who has hands-
on experience dealing with homelessness, including her own transitional house for women, as well as a background in small business development. The announce- WILLIAMS ment described Williams as “a trailblazer in business and a Fairfield community activist committed to tackling the problems of affordable housing, homelessness and local economic development.” The candidate filing period opened on Monday and goes through Aug. 12. It will be extended to Aug. 17 for offices in which the incumbent
does not file for re-election. District 1 is currently represented by Chuck Timm, who is in a runoff with Suisun City Councilwoman Wanda Williams for the District 3 seat on the Board of Supervisors. He is not seeking a new council term. A campaign kickoff event is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday in the Napa Deli / Starbucks parking lot, across from Costco, at 5121 Business Center Drive. Williams had an unsuccessful run at the Solano County Board of Supervisors in 2020.

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County Public Health Division and a number of other agencies, with funding from Partnership HealthPlan of California, have developed a website with information about childhood immunizations. Solano’s vaccination rates for routine childhood immunizations have remained low throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. “The website, Solano VaxFacts.com, serves as a public resource for information on early childhood immunizations, including facts about vaccines,
where to get vaccinated, payment assistance, and more. Community members can also download a vaccine schedule that details the timeline for necessary immunizations for children age two months through 16 years,” the county stated. The other agencies involved are First 5 Solano, Ole Health, La Clinica, Help Me Grow Solano and Child Start. “PHC and our partners are so excited to launch this new resource for Solano County,” Liz Gibboney, chief executive officer of PHC, said in a statement released by the county on Monday. “It is our hope that
additional information about childhood immunizations will help dispel some of the fears and myths around vaccines and increase the number of youth in our community who are up-to-date on needed care, particularly after Covid-19.” Dr. Jeanah Braden, a Solano County Family Health Services pediatrician featured in a video on the website, said, “Just as car seats are designed to protect children in the event of a car accident, vaccines are carefully designed and tested to safely protect children from preventable diseases.”

Newsom signs wildlife conservation bill Daily Republic Staff
DRNEWS@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Tuesday from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that works to help ensure the conservation of wildlife habitats in California through public-private partnerships with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Collaboration is the key to maintaining sustainable hunting lands in California,” said Dodd in a press release. Dodd co-chairs the Legislature’s Outdoor Sporting Caucus. “Many in the outdoor
sporting community are the most conservation-minded because they want to pass on to future generations the opportunities they have had,” Dodd added in the DODD release. “Thanks to Gov. Council wants ‘firm’ legal opinion before setting special district fees Todd R. Hansen
THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — The City Council will pay NBS Government Finance Group $344,000 for assessment engineering and community engagement services to help set future assessments for six landscape and lighting maintenance districts. An additional $30,000 was set aside as a contingency, bringing the total approved Tuesday to $374,000. The action came despite objections from some residents – particularly residents of the Rolling Hills Landscape and Lighting Maintenance District – who are less than enamored with NBS and their interactions with the firm. However, the bigger
fight came later when the city was accused of violating the state Constitution with regard to how it sets the assessment. Rolling Hills residents believe the city fails to follow the provisions of Proposition 218 – approved by the voters in 1996 – and as one man said, could be facing a “huge lawsuit” if it approved the assessments as proposed. The council decided, instead, not to finalize the 2022-23 assessments for the 16 landscape and lighting maintenance districts, and will hold a special closed session to address the legal position the city is in at this time. That was the advice of City Attorney David Lim, who called into the meeting, and said See Fees, Page A6

Pleasants Valley Fire Safety Council certified as Firewise Community Daily Republic Staff

VACAVILLE — The Pleasants Valley Fire Safe Council has been certified as a Firewise Community, opening up opportunities for grants and other benefits. “There is much work that is yet to be completed, a certification often demonstrates a finish, but we are not finished. We have barely started,” council President David Stevens said in a statement. “There is still work to be done through projects by the Pleasants Valley Fire Safe Council including community chipping program, free property risk assessments for residents, fuels management projects, ingress/egress access improvements, and emergency vehicle access points identification and improvement.” The July certification was issued by the National Fire Protection Association and the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the safety council announced in a statement. “Becoming Firewise will allow the council to apply for grants that can benefit the community through chipping programs, home hardening techniques, and weed abatement as they work to reduce the wildfire risk in the area,” the council said in the statement. The council was formed in 2021 following the LNU Lightning Complex Fire, which devastated Pleasants Valley and surrounding areas. “The NFPA’s Firewise USA program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take

FAIRFIELD — The City Council on Tuesday took action to comply with the state’s droughtdriven conservation order issued in March. Stage II demand reductions include, but are not limited to, the following: n Routinely check for and repair leaks, breaks and malfunctions in a timely manner. n No irrigation of landscape between the hours of noon and 6 p.m. n Limit irrigation of landscape to four days per week or less.
n Use water features (i.e., fountains) that recirculate water. n Use shut-off nozzles with hoses to conserve water. “In addition to declaring a Stage II demand reduction, the state’s conservation regulation also calls on urban water suppliers to conserve 10-20% of consumption. Thus far, the city is on track to meet the conservation goals set by the state,” the staff report states. Reduced water use in the city will also cut back on city revenues.

SOLANO VOICES
IMPORTANT ADDRESSES
ov. Gavin Newsom spent three days in Washington last week expanding his profile as a national political figure while insisting he has no interest in running for president. Newsom’s press office trumpeted his visit with daily bulletins listing his contacts with various political figures, the first of which declared that “California was on the national stage. . .” The ostensible purpose of Newsom’s trip was to accept an award for supporting public education in California – although in fact California’s students have Dan Walters only mediocre scores on national academic tests. He used his acceptance speech to continue his rhetorical attacks on Republicans, particularly Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is widely seen as a potential GOP presidential candidate. “I do believe education is under assault in ways that I’ve never experienced in my lifetime,” Newsom said. “But what’s happening now – banning books, suppressing speech, the othering of our students, teachers, parents – it’s alarming. And so I came here not just to acknowledge and be recognized as a state that’s committed to righting wrongs and advancing the cause of reform and innovation but I’d be remiss if I didn’t speak more deeply to the moment that I think we’re living in as it relates to the assault on our freedom.” Newsom has criticized his own party for being too passive in its battles with Republicans at the state and federal levels, leading to media speculation that he is laying the groundwork for a presidential campaign either in 2024 or 2028. At one point, Newsom told reporters that his only ambition is “to express the frantic frustration, anger and despair a lot of folks are feeling about what’s happening in this country in real time. And it transcends the administration. But we have to have the administration’s back.” By happenstance or otherwise, Newsom’s Washington trip, including visits to the White House, coincided with President Joe Biden’s absence during a diplomatic tour of the Mideast. It also came as a new New York Times poll reported that 64% of Democratic voters, citing his age and erratic performance, want someone other than Biden to be the party’s presidential candidate in 2024 and “voters nationwide have soured on his leadership, giving him a meager 33% job-approval rating.” Despite Newsom’s repeated denials of presidential ambition and his declarations of “unwavering support” for Biden and his agenda, the Washington visit drew heavy attention from the national political media, which place him on the informal list of candidates-in-waiting should Biden not seek a second term. So is Newsom really beginning to campaign for president? Not overtly, perhaps, but by escalating his attacks on Republicans and lamenting his own party’s inactivity, he will continue to draw that attention. The New York Times poll and open demands from the Democratic left that Biden stand down indicate that 2024 could be an opportunity for him, if he wants it. Although Newsom has voiced support for Vice President Kamala Harris, a fellow Californian, as an eventual successor to Biden, her political standing is also shaky and she would not be the automatic replacement. Thad Kousser, a political science professor at the University of California, San Diego, had it right when he told the Associated Press, “This is Gavin Newsom building his national brand for whatever opportunities might come up in the future. “He’s savvy enough to know a lot of dominoes would have to fall for his future to come in 2024, but that makes it even more vital to take every opportunity to stay in the national consciousness for 2028.”

Fairfield-Suisun School District board members, some of whom approved bond projects and/or participated in the development details of a project. In my opinion, this presents a conflict of interest perception that their oversight will be biased. The Citizens Oversight Committee reviews and accepts (not approves) the bond annual financial and performance audits prepared by the district’s auditor. The purpose of those audits is compliance with state laws, not for the best interest of community taxpayers, as Smith proclaims. In her column, Trustee Ana Petero alerted the public there will be no more modernization of bathroom facilities at existing schools or career technical education facilities without expanding the district’s debt load. Those are projects that could have been done under Measure J funding if the Fairfield High School performing arts center was not being built. What is the stewardship from the school board when it comes to prioritizing funding for facility upgrades? Does the board understand the consequences of bond debt burdens on the taxpayers? Misinforming the public about needed school facilities funding can only result in negative feedback at election time. From Page One in response to reports Manchin had withdrawn his support. Still, the president does not plan to declare a climate emergency this week, and as of Tuesday morning, White House officials had not made a final decision on measures to be announced in Massachusetts. In remarks in Somerset, Massachusetts, the president will speak about “tackling the climate crisis and seizing the opportunity of a clean energy future to create jobs and lower costs for families,” the White House said in a statement. The venue, Brayton Point power station, was a coal-fired power plant that was once the largest in New England and closed in 2017. It’s now primed to serve as a production hub for power cables and other equipment critical for more than a dozen offshore wind farms planned along the East Coast. The site embodies the U.S. transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy as well as the president’s bid to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030. Biden has repeatedly portrayed the
Bill From Page One argued that the language of the abortion ruling also endangers a Supreme Court decision in 2015 that legalized samesex marriage nationwide. The Supreme Court struck down DOMA as unconstitutional in 2012. Pelosi and other proponents sought to tie the bill, and any Republicans who voted against it, to an empowered bloc of conservative justices who shifted the court to the right this term. “As radical justices and right-wing politicians continue their assault on our basic rights, Democrats believe that the government has no place between you and the person you love,” Pelosi said on the House floor. The Biden administration came out in favor of the bill in a statement Tuesday. “No person should face discrimination because of who they are or whom they love, and every married couple in the United States deserves the secu-
Flock From Page One would likely be pretty close to that figure, which would then be about $140,000 a year. Jacobsen said he knows the cost is lower than that because the city used some of its own cameras that were able to take the software. He said the first 38 cameras in use cost the city under $100,0000. The company said it is always coming up with new products and services to expand the system, but was not willing to say what the next step in that evolu-

movement toward renewable and cleaner energy sources as a jobs engine for the U.S. economy. While the White House hasn’t settled on declaring a climate emergency, the move is tempting because of the authorities it would unlock for the president and his administration. Under an emergency declaration, he could redirect federal funding to clean-energy construction, steer aid to communities on the front lines of climate change and even curb the export of fossil fuels driving global warming. Former President Donald Trump used a similar tactic to divert billions of dollars to begin construction of a wall on the US southern border after Congress refused to appropriate the funding. Trump’s move was criticized by Democrats at the time as an illegal end-run around Congress and faced multiple court challenges. Biden revoked Trump’s emergency declaration shortly after assuming office, before it had been fully litigated. It would be no less controversial if Biden seized powers typically deployed against unexpected national disasters to address an ongoing climate crisis. Some goodgovernment advocates
have warned against the move, cautioning that enduring climate action requires special tools from Congress, including tax credits to spur renewable power projects and advanced energy manufacturing included in the now-stalled climate bill. But many Democrats, ready to move on from that approach after more than a year of negotiations, are pushing Biden to act aggressively now. “The potential to enact the legislation is dead,” said Sen. Jeff Merkley, an Oregon Democrat. The development “frees up the president to use the full powers of the executive branch – and those full powers certainly include a climate emergency.” Sen. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat and author of the Green New Deal, has lobbied the White House to seize emergency authority. “I’m confident that the president is ultimately ready to do whatever it takes in order to deal with this crisis,” Markey told reporters Tuesday. “He’s made that clear in his statement last Friday, and I think coming to Massachusetts is a further rearticulation of that.” By declaring a national emergency, Biden could tap more than 100 special powers nor-
mally intended to address hurricanes, terrorist attacks and other unforeseen events. For instance, under the Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, the president could direct the Federal Emergency Management Agency to construct renewable energy projects using federal money. He could also trigger a national security exemption in a 2015 law that lifted a decades-long ban on most crude exports, re-imposing licensing requirements and other restrictions to curtail overseas oil sales. Even without declaring an emergency, Biden can use the federal government’s purchasing power to compel cleanenergy acquisitions. He’s already invoked Cold War-era authorities under the Defense Production Act to propel US manufacturing of an array of critical energy technologies, including solar panels, fuel cells and heat pumps. Some analysts believe Biden might wield emergency powers in a more targeted way, such as by seeking to increase clean energy production. “Courts have generally given presidents wide latitude on emergency declarations,” Benjamin Salisbury, director
rity of knowing that their marriage will be defended and respected,” the administration said. Democrats and legal experts have said the majority opinion in the abortion case – in which Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. wrote that the Constitution protects only rights “deeply rooted in our history and traditions” – puts the Supreme Court decisions on same-sex marriage on the chopping block as well. Republicans such as Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan disagreed, saying Democrats have stoked false fears about the future of samesex marriage. Jordan pointed to a portion of the Supreme Court opinion on abortion that states the ruling “should not be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion.” “We are here for a charade,” Jordan said on the floor. “We’re here for political messaging, and Democrats can’t run on their disastrous record. They can’t run on any accomplishments less than four months before an election, and all Democrats can do is stoke unfounded fears.”
On the House floor, Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D- N.Y., called “nonsense” on the argument from Jordan and other Republicans. Nadler said the logic the majority applied to abortion rights could easily apply to same-sex marriage, same-sex relationships and access to contraception. Nadler also pointed to a separate concurring opinion from Justice Clarence Thomas, who wrote that “in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell,” referring to the cases that established those rights. “Justice Thomas mentioned all that specifically,” Nadler said. New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis was among the Republicans who backed the measure. The first-term representative issued a statement before Tuesday’s vote that the bill would “ensure our fellow Americans continue to have the right to equal marriage and benefits under federal law.” Although Democrats
control both chambers of Congress and the White House, a closely divided Senate has so far stymied their efforts to address the Supreme Court’s decisions this term. An earlier effort to pass legislation codifying the right to an abortion didn’t gain enough support to overcome a Republican filibuster. Additionally, Republicans have blocked Democrats’ efforts to prevent states from prohibiting women to travel elsewhere seeking an abortion. In a floor speech last week, Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., called concerns from Democrats over the danger to women’s health from laws banning abortion care “misinformation.” During an interview Tuesday with NBC News, Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., called the bill “largely scare tactics by Democrats in a political season.” However, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Tuesday he had not made a decision about the future of the bill in the Senate.
tion will be. Jacobsen is less interested in the next bell or whistle, but rather a drop in the number of crimes. “The biggest thing that I hope is it deters crime,” he said. Facial recognition is not part of the system, and the department is specifically prohibited from using the system for “immigration enforcement, traffic enforcement, harassment or intimidation, usage based solely on a protected class (i.e. race, sex, religion), personal use,” the website states. Flock sells to about 1,200 law enforcement agencies, and is helping to solve between 600 and
700 crimes every day, or about 3% of reported crimes. The goal is to reach 25% of all crimes, said Holly Beillen, the head of public relations for Flock. The company also sells systems to businesses, neighborhood groups and others – though typically not quite as advanced as the law enforcement systems – and links to other systems such as Amber Alert. So if a vehicle identified in an Amber Alert passes a camera, local law enforcement receives a real-time notification. The Flock Safety System was founded by Garrett Langley, the company’s chief exec-
utive officer, as well as co-founder Matt Feury and early employees Paige Todd and Bailey Quintrell. Langley began working on the technology and company after experiencing a home burglary in his Atlanta, Georgia, neighborhood. The system is used in 1,500 communities, the company reported. Unlike other systems, Flock does not sell the information collected to outside interests, Beillen said. Langley also helped launch Clutch, a monthly car subscription service, and Experience, a live events mobile technology company.
in the statement. There have been 250 confirmed cases in California. “People with monkeypox might start experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, low energy, swollen lymph nodes and general body aches. A person can also develop a rash or sores that look like pimples or blisters and may be painful and itchy. Monkeypox illness can last for approximately two to four weeks,” the
county statement said. The CDC recommends the following measures to prevent or lessen the risk of infection with monkeypox: n Avoid close physical contact with people who have symptoms such as sores or rashes. n Avoid contact with infected animals and materials contaminated with the virus. n Isolation of infected persons until their symptoms, including rash, have gone away completely.
n Using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPP) like gloves and a mask when caring for others with symptoms. n Practice good hand hygiene, including washing your hands often with soap and warm water. Anyone who believes he or she may have been exposed to the virus, or who is showing symptoms, should contact their doctor for evaluation.

Officials: Shark that attacked swimmer was about 15 feet long Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — A great white shark that bit and seriously injured a 62-year-old swimmer last month in Monterey Bay was about 15 feet long, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said. The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. June 22 in the waters off Lovers Point Beach near the community of Pacific Grove. A swimmer, identified by the San Francisco Chronicle as Steve Bruemmer, suffered major injuries to his stomach and leg but survived. Bruemmer said he was about 150 yards from the beach when he was attacked, the Chronicle reported. The shark eventually let him go and swam away. Two paddleboarders and a surf instructor rescued the swimmer from the water and pulled him to the beach, where he was treated by
a doctor and two nurses before being taken to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, the Chronicle reported. The shark was not found after the attack. Shortly after the attack, rumors began circulating that the shark had been 20 feet long, the Department of Fish and Wildlife said. But the department’s estimate of 14 feet to 15 feet, based on wound photo measurements and an examination of the victim’s damaged wetsuit, is “within the normal range for white sharks in the area.” “Average adult white sharks range from about 12 to 15 feet long, with females larger than males,” the department said in a release, adding that there are “almost no confirmed reports of sharks much bigger than 15 to 18 feet long.” The incident marked the second shark attack of 2022 in California, with the first occurring off San Miguel Island.
Doctor who performed abortion for 10-year-old rape victim may sue AG Tribune Content Agency The doctor at the center of a national firestorm about abortion has taken the first steps to sue the Indiana attorney general who accused her of failing to report the procedure. Dr. Caitlin Bernard performed an abortion on a 10-year-old girl who had been raped and impregnated after helping her travel from Ohio, where the procedure was banned, to Indiana, the beginning of a contentious back-andforth between political parties about the rights of a rape victim. The abortion, reported by the Indianapolis Star, came just weeks after Roe v. Wade was overturned, leaving behind a powder keg of discourse. Conservatives initially accused Bernard of lying and then, after a suspect was arrested, of failing to follow protocol. “We have this abortion activist acting as a doctor with a history of failing to report,” Indiana Attor-
ney General Todd Rokita told Fox News last week. “We’re gathering the evidence as we speak, and we’re going to fight this to the end, including looking at her licensure. If she failed to report it in Indiana, it’s a crime for – to not report, to intentionally not report.” Health records obtained by the Star confirmed that Bernard reported the abortion to both the Indiana Department of Health and the Department of Child Services within the required time frame, as well as noted that the girl had been abused. “Mr. Rokita either knew the statements were false or acted with reckless disregard of the truth or falsity of the statements,” reads the tort claim filed Tuesday. “Given the current political atmosphere in the United States, Mr. Rokita’s comments were intended to heighten public condemnation of Dr. Bernard, who legally provided legitimate medical care.”

Emmett Till’s Chicago home to get preservation funds Tribune Content Agency CHICAGO — Emmett Till left his mother’s house on Chicago’s South Side in 1955 to visit relatives in Mississippi, where the Black teenager was abducted and brutally slain for reportedly whistling at a white woman. A cultural preservation organization announced Tuesday that the house will receive a share of $3 million in grants being distributed to 33 sites and organizations nationwide that are important pieces of African American history. Some of the grant money from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund will go to rehabilitate buildings, such as a bank in Mississippi founded by businessman Charles Banks, who won praise from Booker T. Washington; the first Black masonic lodge in North Carolina; and a school in rural Florida for the children of Black farm workers and laborers. The money will also help restore the Virginia home where tennis coach Dr. Robert Walter “Whirlwind” Johnson helped turn Black athletes such as Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson into champions, rehabilitate the Blue Bird Inn in Detroit that is considered the birthplace of bebop jazz, and protect and preserve African American ceme-
Teens
“This house is a sacred treasure from our perspective and our goal is to restore it and reinvent it as an international heritage pilgrimage destination,” said Naomi Davis, executive director of Blacks in Green, a local nonprofit group that bought the house in 2020. She said the plan is to time the 2025 opening with that of the Obama Presidential Library a few miles away. Leggs said it is is particularly important to do something that shines a light on Mamie Till Mobley. After her 14-yearold son’s lynching, Till Mobley insisted that his body be displayed in an open casket as it looked
when it was pulled from a river, to show the world what racism looked like. It was a display that influenced thousands of mourners who filed by the casket and the millions more who saw the photographs in Jet Magazine – one of whom was Rosa Parks whose refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus to a white man about three months later remains one of the pivotal acts of defiance in American history. “It was a catalytic moment in the civil rights movement and through this we lift and honor Black women in civil rights,” Leggs said.

Brent Leggs, executive director of the organization that is in its fifth year of awarding the grants, said the effort is intended to fill “some gaps in the nation’s understanding of the civil rights movement.” Till’s brutal slaying helped galvanize the civil rights movement. British rails buckle under record heat Tribune Content Agency Travelers in Britain were warned to stay home rather than risk a ride on rails that could buckle under record temperatures as brutal conditions swept through Europe. Train companies offered refunds and ticket swaps, and Network Rail told passengers on Tuesday not to travel north out of London to a weather “red zone.” A temperature of 39.1 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit) was recorded at Charlwood, Surrey, according to the Met Office, which warned that temperatures would likely rise further. That would break the previous record

A notice in an underground train station warns people to avoid travelling where necessary because of the heat in London, England, Tuesday. of 38.7 degrees set on July 25, 2019. The current heat wave has sparked deadly wildfires in Spain, Portugal and France, adding to the challenges facing Europe from political upheaval to travel chaos and surging
prices. Russia’s war in Ukraine provides a grim backdrop and increases anxiety about the weather’s impact on food production. The hot and dry conditions have caused an area roughly equivalent
to the combined size of New York’s boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens to burn over the past 10 days, while more than 600 people have died across the region. Increasingly frequent and intense heat waves are the result of climate change, and temperatures this extreme are set to become more common as the world continues to burn fossil fuels. Brutal conditions have already struck India, the U.S. and western Europe this year, but pose a particular challenge to regions unaccustomed to scorching temperatures like the UK. Ireland also posted its highest temperature in more than a century on Monday.
National Archives demands report on lost Secret Service texts Tribune Content Agency The keeper of federal records asked the Secret Service to determine whether any text messages by agents around the time of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol were improperly deleted. The National Archives and Records Administration said in a letter Tuesday to the agency that it must submit a report within 30 days documenting what occurred. “This report must include a complete
description of the records affected, a statement of the exact circumstances surrounding the deletion of messages, a statement of the safeguards established to prevent further loss of documentation, and details of all agency actions taken to salvage, retrieve, or reconstruct the records,” the National Archives wrote. The House committee investigating the efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election has also subpoenaed the agency for the texts.

Expos rule Area 1, advance to state finals Matt Miller MMILERS@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Expos have adopted the slogan, "Do it for 6," to honor teammate Demetrio Perriatt, who lost his life in a tragic drowning accident at Lake Berryessa, hours after a return from the team's two-week road trip to Oregon. The Expos have won nine straight games, grabbed the championship of the Area 1 Ameri-
can Legion Tournament Monday night at Laurel Creek Park and are now headed to the state championship tournament Friday night at Fresno State University. "The team has shown its resolve by rallying behind the slogan and honoring him," manager Brad Hanson said. "It's been a motivating factor right now. It's a tight group and the chemistry has been exceptional." Fairfield carries an overall record of 56-14 and
will open tournament play at 5 p.m. Friday night against Clovis, the host team. There are six areas throughout the state represented in the tournament with runner-ups invited from Area 1 (Petaluma) and the Los Angeles area, because of the number of team's in each. "Clovis is a real powerhouse," Hanson said. "They draw from great schools like Buchanan and others in that area." The Expos rallied to win the championship
Monday night in an extrainning thriller. Fairfield topped archival Petaluma 6-5 in nine innings. Aidan Robles singled with two outs and the bases loaded for the walk-off game-winner. Dayton Hicks started the game and pitched into the fifth inning. Peyton Olds worked from the fifth through the ninth, picking up the win. Olds' victory came one day after he got the final two outs in the semifinal, 5-4 win over Napa.
The tournament championship was the 90th in Expos' history. Fairfield notched a 5-4 win over Napa Valley in the semifinals. The Expos scored two runs on a wild pitch with two outs in the sixth inning. The first runner tied the game and the second runner never stopped rounding third and slid safely into home with what proved to be the game-winning run. Trevor Morse got the win in relief of starter Drew Carrington.
Noah Rodda went 2-for-2 for the Expos offense in the semifinal. Blake Bozzini had two hits. Grant Kerr, Aidan Robles, Bryce Dichoso and Cy Dempsay added singles. Fairfield reached the semifinals by advancing Saturday from a forfeit win against Yuba City. The Stripers did not have enough players to field a complete team. The Expos will compete in the Western Regionals the next week as the tournament host.

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
LOS ANGELES — When Dodger Stadium hosted the All-Star Game in 1980, the super-sized (for their time) “Diamond Vision” screens in the outfield were the big innovation, new to MLB at the time. Forty-two years later, the game returned to Chavez Ravine. Run suppression was the looming presence this time. The two teams, stocked with the best hitters baseball has to offer, combined for 13 hits – only four after the fourth inning, the offense setting long before the sun did. The American League did all of its damage that inning, hitting backto-back home runs off Dodgers
right-hander Tony Gonsolin of Vacaville and making that stand up for a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night. The win was the ninth straight for the AL team in the annual exhibition. The NL hasn’t won since an 8-0 shutout at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium in 2012. This game began with a special moment for a hometown hero. Clayton Kershaw is notorious for his single-minded focus on days when he starts. But he did a lot of things Tuesday that he would not normally do on a start day. “Knowing that I’m not going to get to start an All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium ever again. It was just really cool for me to kind of take that all in at once,” Kershaw
said of the event. The National League jumped out in front with two runs in the bottom of the inning off Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan. Ronald Acuña Jr. led off with a double and scored on a Mookie Betts’ RBI single. After a double play cleared the bases, Paul Goldschmidt lined a solo home run into the left field pavilion. Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton crushed an 0-and-2 splitter from Gonsolin. It left his bat at 111.7 mph and landed 457 feet away in the back row of the left field pavilion. Four pitches later, Twins outfielder Byron Buxton sent a 2-and-1 fastball over the wall.
SAN FRANCISCO — Every All-Star break is a chance for teams to do take stock, and it’s also a good time to look ahead – not just to the second half, but beyond. The San Francisco Giants didn’t enjoy their best results in the first half, and that might shape plans for all sorts of future decisions. We spoke to the man in charge of the team’s personnel matters, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, for a closer look at what the Giants are thinking three and a half months into the 2022 season. Q: After 107 wins last year, hovering just over .500 now, how do you evaluate where the team is overall? You’ve said the front office hasn’t decided if you’re buyers or sellers – are you contenders or looking to build for the future, or is that unclear to date? A: Since I’ve been with the Giants, I’ve

Steve Torrence was the Top Fuel finisher at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway in 2021. Born in San Jose, Salinas was introduced to racing by his father, who raced his hot rods during the 60’s and 70’s at Fremont Drag Strip and Little Bonneville, which were all within proxim-
ity of Sonoma Raceway. Salinas made his professional debut in NHRA Top Fuel in 2011, with his first race at drag racing’s highest level in 2011 at Sonoma Raceway. The Denso NHRA
Sonoma Nationals remains widely known as the Salinas’ home event even though Salinas remains winless at his home track. Nevertheless, Salinas knows to keep his points lead alive, he needs to look for his first ever win at Sonoma Raceway in front of friends and family.

used the word ‘transition’ about the organization – we’ve been using that term for three years now, and that I think that kind of continues. We’re a bigmarket team, and we have expectations to be competitive every year, so I don’t think we view our long-term vision through some cyclical prism. Not to say that that’s not the right path for certain organizations, but for us, we recognize that we have an older roster – we experienced some of the transition with Buster [Posey]’s retirement – and even as the look of the roster changes, as we continue to get younger the next couple of years, you just want to feel like you have the ability to compete on a year-in, year-out basis. As a longer-term vision, I think we look at the successes from last few years in terms of guys like Mike Yastrzemski and LaMonte
In the midst of a prolific playoff run in which he helped guide the Golden State Warriors to their fourth title in eight seasons, it was easy to forget All-Star Andrew Wiggins almost began the year without his shot. His Covid shot. At the beginning of the 2021-2022 season, a San Francisco health order required Warriors players to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to be eligible to participate in home games at Chase Center. Wiggins said in September he preferred not to get vaccinated, telling reporters at a press conference the decision was none of your business is what it comes down to.” Wiggins ultimately chose to comply with the health order and get the vaccine, but even after the best season of his
professional career and his first NBA title, the forward said he regrets the decision. “I still wish I didn’t get (the vaccine) to be honest with you,” Wiggins told FanSided in an interview Monday. “But you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.” The sentiment echoes comments Wiggins made in March, after he was named an All-Star for the first time in his eight-year NBA career. “I still wish I hadn’t gotten it,” Wiggins told the Bay Area News Group at the time. “Bigger picture, it all worked out for the best. I’m here on the most exciting team in the league. I’m an All-Star. So I feel like I made the right choice at the end of the day.” Had Wiggins elected not to get the vaccine, he would not have been paid.

Chicago’s Grant Park to host NASCAR race
Guns, Fishing & Other Stuff
By Robert Channick CHICAGO TRIBUNE
CHICAGO — Imagine cars racing down Lake Shore Drive at 130 mph, burning rubber on South Michigan Avenue and jockeying for position bumper-to-bumper on Balbo Drive. Welcome to the new rush hour in Chicago. The city announced Tuesday it will transform the Grant Park environs into the first-ever NASCAR street race for a weekend next summer. The televised Cup Series event will feature a 12-turn, 2.2 mile-course, with top NASCAR drivers weaving through the park on closed-off streets lined with temporary fences, grandstands and what promoters hope will be thousands of fans. “This is actually going to be our first race on a street course in our 75-year history,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing development and strategy. “I think it’s going to be a very unique course.” The NASCAR race is set to take place on Sunday, July 2, with plans for a separate sports car race scheduled for July 1. The Chicago Street Race will also feature music and entertainment in an effort to attract attendees to Grant Park and much-needed hospitality and tourism revenue to the city. NASCAR, which is promoting the event, selling the tickets and building the track, will pay rental fees to the Chicago Park District for the use of Grant Park, but terms of the agreement with the city were not disclosed. “Chicago’s streets are as iconic as our skyline and our reputation as a world class sports city is indisputable,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a news release. “I am thrilled to welcome our partners at NASCAR to Chicago for an event that will attract thousands of people to our city.” While the street course has been tested in simulations, the proposed length of the race has yet to be determined, Kennedy said. The Chicago Street Race is slated to be one of 36 events in the NASCAR Cup Series, which stretches from February to November and includes such well-known races as the Daytona 500 and newcomers such the Enjoy Illinois 300, which held its first NASCAR event last month at a track just outside St. Louis. Most NASCAR tracks range from a quarter-mile to 2 1/2-mile banked ovals, but the Florida-based sanctioning body for stock car racing holds several events at road courses, including Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., which hosted a Cup Series race July 3. That track will be bumped from the NASCAR Cup Series next summer to make way for the Chicago event. The proposed Chicago course will start on Columbus Drive in front of Buckingham Fountain, an area that will also serve as pit road. From there, drivers will go south to Balbo Drive and then jog east toward Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Heading south along

Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Daniel Suárez and other top NASCAR drivers are expected to compete in Chicago. Their race cars, which can hit 200 miles per hour, will likely top out at a much lower speed on the Chicago street course, Kennedy said. “We’re still running simulations to figure that out,” Kennedy said. “I would guess in the neighborhood of 120-plus or so at top speed. And then on the low end, we’ll probably be similar to the speed of cars going around Grant Park right now.” The streets will be closed to traffic for an indeterminate length of time before, during and after the race, Kennedy said. While barriers will be erected to keep drivers and spectators safe, the extent of the street closings during the race has not been disclosed. “We’re going to try to leave a majority of the streets open as long as we can,” Kennedy said. “A lot of the construction will only happen overnight. So the walls and fencing will kind of go in probably down the streets ahead of time. And then they’ll wait until the last minute to close off the corners.” The most dangerous lap may well take place Tuesday afternoon, when NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace navigates the course in real Chicago traffic, led by a police escort. This is not the first NASCAR race to be held in Chicago, nor the first time the city aspired to turn Lake Shore Drive into a race course. Soldier Field hosted a NASCAR Cup Series race in July 1956. A quarter century later, an ambitious plan by thenMayor Jane Byrne to hold a Formula One race on Lake Shore Drive in the summer of 1981 never made it to the starting line. This time, the course will stay north of Soldier Field and south of the infamous S-curve on Lake Shore Drive. The Chicago area has been home to the NASCAR circuit in recent years, with Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet track hosting a number of races since opening in 2001. But the 1.5-mile oval has essentially been idled since it was acquired in 2019 by NASCAR.

Tribune Content Agency The Warriors are slated to sign forward JaMychal Green after a buyout of his contract is complete, league sources confirmed Tuesday afternoon. Green is in the process of finalizing a contract buyout with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but plans to take his talents to the Bay Area once it’s finished. Green spent the last two seasons with the Denver Nuggets before he was traded this offseason to the Thunder for UCLA forward Peyton Watson, this year’s No. 30 overall pick, along with future draft assets. Green was in the final year of his contract and due to be paid $8.2 million next season. The 32-year-old is a proven role player and solid pick up for the Warriors, who lost two key veteran wings, Otto Porter Jr. and Nemanja Bjelica, in free agency. Green had been praised in Denver for his veteran leadership in the locker room. Green averaged 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds while playing 16.2 minutes in 67 games last season.

Before you met another woman, you owed it to your wife to have a conversation about why you wanted to quit the marriage. The case you made against her certainly sounds compelling. Not helping a young couple and their baby out with their heat is certainly mean. Feeling like your spouse only wants you for your money is also a terrible way to feel in a marriage. You could sit down and tell her that it is over and you want a divorce. Or, since you started by saying that you and your wife “get along well,” and you’re not sleeping – possibly because you feel guilty – you could try to patch things up with your wife by securing her promise to stop controlling and hounding you. A marriage counselor might really help both of you. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@ creators.com.

by Phillip Alder from his longest suit, but selects the nine, rather than the five, to deny an honor – top of trash! Declarer sees eight immediate winners: three hearts and five clubs. His best play is to win trick one with dummy’s heart king and to drop a deceptive queen from his hand. Then he calls for a low diamond, hoping to sneak a ninth trick immediately. However, East should pause to consider the defensive prospects. He shouldn’t be fooled by South’s falsecard, because the opening lead tells him that South has the heart 10. Also, East can see that five club tricks are ready to run. Even if declarer has only two low clubs, West will have king-jackdoubleton. So, if declarer wins one diamond trick, the contract is home. Is there any chance for the defenders to get five tricks first? Yes, there is one faint hope. East must assume that his partner has four strong spades. At trick two, East wins with the diamond ace. Then he leads the spade king. Although West signals with the two – hopefully in tempo – East mustn’t be deflected. He should realize that West cannot afford a higher spot-card. East continues with his second spade, and the contract is defeated. COPYRIGHT: 2022, UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE

‘Snyder Cut’ movement for extended ‘Justice League’ movie was reportedly buoyed by bots Tribune Content Agency A fan campaign that successfully got Warner Bros. to release the extended version of Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” may have been helped out by a fake army. The sometimes vicious Twitter movement was made up of at least 13% bots, according to data compiled by Rolling Stone Monday, significantly more than the less than 5% of fake accounts the social media site claims to have. Warner Bros. reportedly commissioned two different studies on the origins of the campaign, which began from an account called @ daniras_ilust, which shared a meme showing
the decapitated heads of “Justice League” producer Geoff Johns, DC Films President Walter Hamada and Toby Emmerich, the former chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, according to Rolling Stone. From there, the fan outrage at the studio grew with claims that they were burying Snyder’s real and true version of the superhero movie. It’s not quite clear who was behind the campaign. Snyder blamed Warner Bros., saying they were trying to ramp up engagement and subscriptions. Sources told Rolling Stone that Snyder was at the very least egging it on.

Rainier Koeners, managing director of Ambassador Theatre Group, in San Francisco, Tuesday, June 21.
Ambassador Theatre Group runs BroadwaySF, the Orpheum and Golden Gate theaters.
Q&A: Former usher now runs 3 major theaters in San Francisco Jim Harrington
BAY AREA NEWS GROUP
SAN JOSE — Rainier Koeners left home at the age of 17 and ended up in London to pursue his passion for theater. Having already done quite a bit of theater work in his hometown of Zoetermeer in the Netherlands during his teen years, Koeners would eventually enroll in the Guildford School of Acting after landing in England. Yet, it was a non-acting gig – working as an usher at the West End’s famed Piccadilly Theatre – that really pointed him toward his future in the theater world. “During my time working there, I became aware that it was possible to have a career in theater outside of being an actor, and that is when I made up my mind – I wanted to run my own theater,” he says. The company that employed him at the time was the powerhouse Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) and he’d steadily work his way up from usher to management at the company. In 2019, Koeners relocated to San Francisco to be the managing director of the Curran Theatre and oversee the opening of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” for ATG. He describes the move as the “best thing that could have happened.” Two years later, ATG acquired BroadwaySF – which hosts touring Broadway shows at the Orpheum and Golden Gate theaters – and Koeners would serve as managing director for those properties as well. We recently had the chance to chat with Koeners about all things ATG in the Bay Area. Q: How would you describe “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” to someone who has yet to see it?
Daily Cryptoquotes
A: The beautiful part of this play is that you don’t have to be a Harry Potter fan to enjoy it. After all, it was chosen by the Tony voters as best play not only because of its magnificent production values but also because of its universal and very real human themes. We meet Harry 19 years after we last saw him. He now has a son, Albus, who goes to Hogwarts and the play really is about Albus’ relationship with his dad and his best friend Scorpius. And as you can imagine, a huge adventure ensues with all the magic you expect from the movies happening live on stage in front of your eyes. So you have this wonderful human story about relationships then it gets matched with some of the most unbelievable scenic elements and special effects ever seen on a stage and, all around, this makes for a pretty spectacular night in the theater. Q: ATG acquired Orpheum and Golden Gate in 2021. Why did the company believe that those theaters would be good additions to the organization? A: ATG already owns and operates dozens of venues across the U.K., Germany and the U.S. Most of ATG’s operations to date have been in the U.K., where the corporate office is, but ATG began expanding into North America a few years ago. I firmly believe that S.F. is a spectacular theater market, probably the best outside of New York. S.F. is also regarded as one of the premier touring markets. So when these theaters came onto the market, we jumped at the opportunity. Our mission as a company is to bring the best possible shows to as many people as possible, and we feel like we totally lucked out being able to take ownership of these two incred-
ibly important theaters. And I, of course, feel like the luckiest man alive to be heading up ATG’s operation in S.F. Q: Your time in San Francisco has overlapped with the pandemic. What were those early days like in March 2020 as you were forced to close down the “Harry Potter” play? A: No one expected the pandemic to close our operations for almost 2 years. We were one of the first industries to shut down and the last to open back up. “Harry Potter” had just opened up and was doing really well. When the pandemic started, we all thought this would blow over within a couple of weeks. “Harry Potter” was originally conceived as a two-part play and on March 11, we were halfway through Part 1 when the mandate to close was issued. People left with sadness, fear but also hope for returning soon. We had to lay off our entire staff and all of the actors and crew working on the production. That was heartbreaking, but we had to start fighting for our survival. We made the commitment that we would keep everyone’s job open for our return and thankfully we were able to do that. It just took way longer than we could ever have predicted. Q: What was the process of reopening theaters like for you and your staff? A: There is a reason why the Bay Area did not see the numbers of Covid deaths and infections as some of the rest of the country. It’s because we believe in science, follow the advice of health experts and did not face many of the politicallyinflicted barriers to masks. See Usher, Page B6

THE UNUSUAL ‘UNSURROUNDING’ PLAY It is the middle of a deal. The dummy, North, holds Q-3-2 of spades. West has the K-J-9-4. Deciding it is right to shift to spades, which card should West lead? The correct play is the jack. If South has the spade ace, probably it is better
Sudoku
by Phillip Alder not to lead the suit. If South holds 10-x-x, only the jack guarantees picking up the whole suit without giving declarer a trick. This is called a surrounding play because West’s jack and nine surround declarer’s 10. However, there is a situation when it appears you have a surrounding play, but you don’t. Against three no-trump, West leads the heart six: two, three, jack. Declarer plays a diamond: two, eight, ace. What should East do now? If he woodenly continues with another heart, declarer wins nine tricks: four major-suit winners and five diamonds. However, East should see there is a grave risk that declarer is ready to claim. Probably East’s next thought is to shift to a club. But to which club? If East leads the four, declarer plays low and loses only three club tricks. Similarly, if East tries the surrounding play by leading the club jack, declarer covers and restricts his club losers to three. The only chance to get four club tricks is for East to assume South holds queen-doubleton. The correct defense is to cash the club king before continuing with the four. When West leads his third and last club, East is sitting with the J-9 over dummy’s 10-8, and the contract is defeated. COPYRIGHT: 2022, UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE

A giant octopus mutated by nuclear radiation threatens San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in “It Came From the Sea.”
LOS ANGELES — Steven Spielberg is the most commercially successful director of all time, drawing fame, acclaim and three Oscars for his work on high-profile feature films. But three-minute music videos shot on a cellphone? The “Jurassic Park” director will make his music video debut with “Cannibal,” the new single from Marcus Mumford. The Mumford and Sons lead singer confirmed the news on Twitter and Instagram, sharing a photo of the 75-year-old director sitting in a rolling chair anchored by wife Kate Capshaw and training his phone on the singer. “On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New York, Steven Spielberg directed his first music video, in one shot, on his phone,” Mumford wrote in a Twitter thread. “Kate Capshaw was the almighty dolly grip.” “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support
Usher From Page B5 As a result, our community came out strong on the other end of the pandemic, but understandably we remained – and still are – cautious. So when we announced we were reopening a large part of our audiences were rearing to go and another large part was – and in some cases still is – not quite ready yet. And that is OK, the time will come. Our job is to make sure everyone understands that returning to the theater is safe. We follow the medical communities’ and city’s advice really closely, so are always up-to-date on everything we need to do to safely operate our business. Q: What has the reaction been like from fans who have returned to theaters after the long Covid-dictated break? A: Our first show returning was “Hamilton” – that had played a 1½-year run at the Orpheum up until the

Kate and Steven just got it, and I cannot thank them enough.” There was no word yet on when the video would come out. Don’t expect Spielberg to retire his movie career anytime soon, though – his semiautobiographical, coming-of-age film, “The Fabelmans,” is scheduled for a Nov. 11 release. pandemic shut down. During the pandemic, the “Hamilton” set and costumes stayed on our stage untouched from the matinee performed on March 11, 2020. Our first performance back was quite something. As a thank you, we invited first responders that had been on the front lines not just of healthcare, but also had been on the ground looking after our communities and buildings throughout the pandemic and the reaction was overwhelming. To say there wasn’t a dry eye in the house – including myself – is not an exaggeration. It had been a long two years. The moment the show began, the ovation was extended and people – even the cast – were overcome with emotion. Through the halfdozen productions we’ve had here since that time, we have seen the continuous power of live theater reaching audiences. They are so happy to be back and experience the thrill of live entertainment.

SEC will stand pat, stay nimble San Diego State as realignment upends football best option for
Pac-12 expansion
Tribune Content Agency ATLANTA — Relaxing June 30 at his Skaneateles Lake getaway in native New York, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey would enjoy a short-lived vacation. News of USC and UCLA’s jump to the Big Ten in 2024 delivered another shock wave to college football’s landscape. Sankey was forced to recalibrate, dig into the details and weigh options before meeting six days later with presidents and chancellors and athletic directors. “So much for our summer vacation,” Sankey lamented Monday at SEC Media Days in Atlanta. Yet, Sankey does not plan to let the latest realignment bombshell force further SEC expansion beyond 16 teams. The league’s top football conference will not seek a counter move but also will be at the ready. “There’s no sense of urgency in our league, no panic and reaction to others’ decisions,” Sankey said during his first public comments since the latest realignment. “We know who we are. We’re confident in our success. “But we’ll watch what happens around us and be thoughtful, but be nimble.” The first seismic shift occurred a year ago at SEC Media Days

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey holds his opening press conference to begin SEC Media Days at the College Football Hall of Fame, Monday. outside Birmingham, where news broke Texas and Oklahoma would leave the Big 12 for the SEC in 2025. The move emboldened the nation’s top college football conference and forced other leagues to react. The Big 12 restocked with UCF, Cincinnati, Houston and BYU. Yet, the Big Ten’s pilfering of USC – the Pac-12′s show pony – and crosstown rival UCLA elevated the second-best football league and
furnished it one of the nation’s top media markets. Even so, Sankey prefers the SEC’s position and additions relative to those of the Big Ten. Asked if Texas/Oklahoma “trumps” USC/UCLA, he replied, “Yes.” Sankey then quickly added, with a smile, ”I’m not sure we want to use the word ‘trumped’ all the time these days. Got to be careful about that.”
Saban says super leagues not ideal Tribune Content Agency ATLANTA — Deep into an empty answer Nick Saban didn’t want to give, Alabama’s legendary football coach hit the nerve of the question overshadowing his sport. “If we have two 20-team leagues,” Saban said Tuesday during SEC media days, “how is that going to impact all the people that are not in those leagues? That’s a question for all of you to
speculate and answer on.” There’s no need to speculate, because the answer is obvious: It will be bad, if not catastrophic. For mid-major programs or even big-name teams outside the Power Two, Saban’s question isn’t merely hypothetical. It’s existential. Even if Florida State, Miami and Clemson end up in a super league, other successful programs (UCF? Virginia Tech? Oklahoma

State?) won’t. They’ll fall behind even more financially while losing any shot at challenging for national titles. Fan interest will inevitably, and deservedly, wane. The problem is even more pronounced at schools like USF. There’s some concern among Bulls fans about the timing of the on-campus stadium the school wants to build. Take away the possibility – however remote – of moving to a
bigger league or vying for a College Football Playoff bid, and USF will be spending nine figures to host a generation of games against Charlotte and Florida Atlantic. Is that a sound investment? None of those scenarios hurt Saban or his Crimson Tide. But when college football is at its best, have-nots are relevant, too. The game needs Cincinnati to crash the playoff occasionally to keep things interesting.
The array of lifeboats available for the Pac-12 seemingly has been reduced by one. The conference is no longer discussing a merger or alliance with the Big 12, according to an ESPN report Monday night. In the realignment game, nothing is official until it’s official – and sometimes not even then. But if we presume the leagues don’t reconsider a partnership, the Pac-12 seemingly is left with three paths to survival: n Join forces with the ACC under an ESPN media rights umbrella. n Stick together (without the ACC) as a 10-school conference. n Stick together (without the ACC) and expand. If expansion is the preferred outcome, one school stands as the obvious addition: San Diego State. The Aztecs have been preparing for this opportunity for a decade and borrowed from the expansion blueprint used by Utah, which spent years readying itself for the moment the Pac-12 called. Admittedly, we don’t have a good handle on San Diego State’s Olympic sports, but it doesn’t matter. Realignment is about football, men’s basketball, and football. Also, football. On the field, the Aztecs are 6-1 against the Pac-12 since 2017, with wins over Utah, ASU, UCLA, Stanford and Arizona. They have won at least
ANALYSIS 10 games in five of the past six seasons (excluding 2020) and were ranked in the end-of-year AP poll in 2016 and 2021. While SDSU hasn’t reached the same level of success as Cincinnati – or Boise State under Chris Petersen – the program is on the next tier. Add the resources and cache that would come with Pac-12 membership, and the Aztecs would more than hold their own on a weekly basis. Meanwhile, the men’s basketball program is plenty worthy of an invitation, having qualified for the NCAAs in nine of the past 12 years. (Had Covid not intervened, the Aztecs would have been a No. 1 or 2 seed in the 2020 tournament.) Also, have you seen the state of Pac-12 basketball lately? SDSU would enhance the overall product. The Pac-12 desperately needs SDSU in order to maintain a presence in the greater Southern California region, both for media exposure and a recruiting foothold. Put another way: Without the Aztecs, the conference won’t have a campus within 300 miles of the talent pool that fuels its roster building – all while the Big Ten will have greater access once USC and UCLAbegin play in 2024. In that case, the Pac-12 might as well be the Big 12. But there’s a second piece to consider: Home to 3.3 million people, San Diego County itself is a vital recruiting zone for the conference.

Giants From Page B1 Wade [Jr.] and this year Luis Gonzalez and Thairo Estrada, guys that kind of broke onto the roster and established roles. You just hope that process can kind of continue every year where you have guys, whether they’re your own prospects that you drafted coming up through the system, or players you trade for in smaller trades, or even guys that you signed as minor-league free agents, come in and establish themselves as important roster pieces have the chance to be here for six years-plus. Q: How do you get younger and more athletic? Is that something that could also be achieved through trade or free agency? A: Yeah, I think so. We have to be open to all those channels. When you’re talking about getting younger, in particular free agency isn’t the most obvious way to do that just by virtue of the player pool, but it can be a way to get more athletic. When you have veteran players who are going to be in their roles really as long as they’re Giants – which in a lot of cases is going to hopefully be until they decide they’re done playing; we have players that we want to see retire as Giants and want them to play as long as they feel they can be productive – some transition happens, and we just want to make

sure we’re prepared with guys that can step in. Q: I presume you’re talking about Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt. Do you see both of them retiring as Giants? A: It’s really early to speculate on any players in particular – I guess I would just leave it at that. Sometimes you’ll get a case like Buster where it was a little bit surprising considering how good he was last year, but that’s kind of a case in point that it can really happen any time. We have players on this team who are so accomplished, and who have achieved a lot in the game. They sort of have the luxury of stepping away at any point and feeling like they accomplished a lot. Those guys are also really good players who are really important parts of our team. I think that’s the position most players want to be in, to feel like they have a choice to do what’s right for them, and as an organization, we just have to be prepared. Q: So what are your plans at first and shortstop in that case? You have some in-house options at first base already. Is shortstop a position you will fill internally eventually? A: Obviously, it’s still ways away. Marco Luciano was playing great D, and we’ve talked a lot about the fact that he’s gotten bigger and more physical but still really seems to be able to handle the position, which is encouraging; the injury this year is unfortunate.

term planning can wind up becoming moot really quickly. Our overarching philosophy is to not overplan to the point where we’re restricting ourselves from opportunities. Q: Third base is also potentially a question mark next year. I talked to Evan Longoria a couple weeks ago and he said retirement has gone through his mind at times. How do you see things there? A: Look, Evan is the classic case of a guy who’s still playing really good defense, and his OPS is hovering around .800 and he’s had a lot of big hits for us this year. Gabe Kapler has talked about what a great career Longo has had, and it’s true. The typical fan opening up his baseball-reference page might be a little taken aback by really how accomplished he’s been and what a great career he had even before he got to the Giants. The story is available in full at dailyrepublic.com.
It’s maybe a setback as in terms of his chances of reaching Double-A this year. We’ll look into whether it makes sense for him to play winter ball to make up some of those at-bats. That’s where having a guy like Thairo, who’s shown the ability to play short for stretches, could be a bridge, playing shortstop for some period of time while Luciano continues to develop. But Brandon’s under contract for a year after this year, and he’s still that player – and I put him in that category where it’ll ultimately be his prerogative. You know, from our standpoint, we also want to be open-minded and nimble and flexible. You don’t want to get too regimented about things. Three years ago, I couldn’t have told you what our outfield picture would be and who would wind up taking all these at-bats. Baseball can be a little bit unpredictable and long-

Records This track still holds some very impressive speed records but also some remarkable win records. Below are a few records at Sonoma Raceway that are in jeopardy of a new holder. On July 29, 2017, Robert Hight broke the national record in the Funny Car class at 339.87 mph here at Sonoma Raceway. The record still holds to this day. John Force holds the record for most NHRA career victories in Sonoma, with eight in the Funny Car class (199092, 1994, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2016), with Robert Hight (2008, 2018-19, 2021) and Ron Capps (1997, 2010-11, 2013) with both four wins in the same class. In 2019, Brittany Force set the track speed record in the Top
Toyota power With the newest addition of Steve Torrence to the team, Toyota seems to be in a solid position as it currently has three of their Top Fuel drivers in the top 5. As for Funny Car, only two of the top 5 drivers are in Toyota, and would you be surprised to see the leader in the Funny Car class is Ronn Capps, who also happened to be a new addition to the team?
Back to back? Only a handful of drivers have been able to win back-to-back years at Sonoma Raceway. Last year, Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) joined Robert Hight (Funny Car), Aaron Stanfield (Pro Stock), and Karen Stoffer (Pro Stock Motorcycle) in victory at the 33rd annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway. In 2021 Torrence narrowly beat Leah Pruett in the final round after she went 3.768 at 323.04 in a thrilling side-by-side race. This year Torrence has shown he remains a force to be reckoned with as he stands fourth in points. Last year, Hight in his Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro SS showed us he wasn’t giving up even if defending world Champ Matt Hagan had beaten him off the line. Instead, Hight chased him down to the finish line, winning by a mere 15 inches. This year Hight is showing he’s serious about winning another championship.

holder at 205.04 mph is Matt Smith, who also happened to be the previous record holder at 200.83 mph in 2019. Smith, currently leading in the points after an impressive 34th career win at this past weekend’s race at Bandimere Speedway, is looking to take back-back weekend wins at Sonoma Raceway. It has been 15 years since his last win in 2007 when he defeated Eddie Krawiec. After that win in 2007, Smith would sit runner-up on three occasions, coming very close to victory. So keep an eye out this weekend for Matt Smith and see if he can break his very own track record a third time as he also tries to defend his pointleading season.
