Jackie Farmer teaches her class at Laurel Creek Elementary School in Fairfield, Tuesday.
‘Mrs. Farmer,’ last of the original Laurel Creek Elementary teachers, set to retire Matt Miller MMILLER@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — When school resumes in August at Laurel Creek Elementary, something will be very different in the 30-year history of the school on Gulf Drive. Jackie Farmer – or Mrs. Farmer to the hundreds of students who have entered her classrooms over the years – will no longer be teaching there. Farmer is the last of what she called the “old-timers,” the original group of faculty where many made the switch over from Dover Elementary when it became a middle school. She and her husband Paul, the longtime sports editor of the Daily Republic, will be retiring and
moving to Utah to be close to their children and grandchildren. “I wouldn’t even think about it, but people keep saying, ‘How many days left, Jackie?’ ” Farmer said. “It probably won’t really hit me until August when I’ll want to go out and buy school supplies and I won’t have to. But I do look forward to doing it with my grandchildren.” The Farmers lived in Southern California before they moved to Fairfield in 1990, close to Jackie’s childhood home in Napa and Paul’s in Sonoma. They met as undergrads at Brigham Young University, working together as part of a cafeteria cleanup crew. Jackie started out in the Fairfield-Suisun School District as a substitute teacher before landing a
job at Dover. All four of the Farmer children are products of the district and thrived in various extracurricular activities at Fairfield High, the music programs being the biggest among them. Laurel Creek opened in 1993 and Jackie Farmer found her new home. “It’s been a really good staff to work with,” Farmer said. “There’s a lot of collaboration and helping with new teachers get their feet wet. I’ll miss the staff, but thanks to Facebook and social media, we’ll keep in touch. I have a lot of great memories here.” Farmer has taught first and fifth grade to go with the many years of fourth grade, where she has been See Farmer, Page A7
DOJ opens investigation into police response during Texas school shooting Tribune Content Agency The Department of Justice will launch an investigation into if and how local police failed to stop or slow the massacre at Robb Elementary School last week. “At the request of Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, the U.S. Department of Justice will conduct a Critical Incident Review of the law enforcement response to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas,” officials said Sunday. Nineteen fourth-grade students and two teachers
were fatally shot Tuesday inside their classroom as police waited outside. “The goal of the review is to provide an independent account of law enforcement actions and responses that day, and to identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooter events,” the DOJ said. The report will be released at the end. After days of changing stories, Steven McCraw, the Texas Department of Public Safety director, said Friday that the
