Moderna applies for US clearance of toddler shots Tribune Content Agency Moderna Inc. applied for emergency use authorization for its Covid-19 vaccine in children from six months to under 6 years old after a successful trial showed two doses generate high levels of antibodies to the virus. The highly anticipated application comes just over a month after Moderna said a large trial showed two low doses of its vaccine produced powerful immune responses in young kids. Even though its effectiveness against omicron-related infections is modest, the
application will put tremendous pressure on the Food and Drug Administration to quickly make a decision on whether to authorize it. Similar submissions for clearance are underway with regulators outside the U.S., Moderna said Thursday in a statement. Meanwhile, Moderna has also initiated a submission for authorization of its vaccine for use in kids ages 6 to 11. While the vaccine from partners Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE is authorized for kids 5 and up in the U.S., there is no See Shots, Page A5

FAIRFIELD — The city will host a virtual Housing Element workshop to discuss options for housing strategies and solicit stakeholder input. The workshop will begin at 6 p.m. May 9 using Zoom video conferencing. The city said in a press release that community engagement is critical to devel-
oping a Housing Element that reflects the community’s vision for the future and is responsive to community needs. Cities are required by the state to adopt a Housing Element every five to eight as part of the General Plan, which serves as a community's blueprint for growth. The Housing Element establishes goals and policies that guide long-term decision-making around housing and provides an opportunity to
have a community conversation about local housing needs. The project kicked off by examining housing trends and zoning, economic and market constraints, and by completing a Sites Inventory Memo to identify where Fairfield has sufficient land zoned to meet future housing needs. The project is now beginning to identify strategies for new housing. Visit www.fairfieldforward.com for more information.

Matyas: No Solano mask mandates need to be updated Matt Miller

FAIRFIELD — Covid case numbers continue to rise from the BA.2 subvariant of omicron, but Dr. Bela Matyas, the Solano County Public Health Officer, says reintroducing previous masking mandates won't be necessary at this time. MATYAS "Especially with the mild cases of the variant," Matyas said. "This variant is very transmittable, but unlike the first variant, it does not appear to be as severe." Matyas said Thursday's county Covid numbers are still feeling the impact of Easter weekend. While those hospitalized rose since Monday from seven to eight, no patients are in an intensive care unit with Covid. Two reported new
deaths put the overall pandemic total at 420, but both cases came from 2021 reporting. One man was older than 65, living in the community, who died in October and was unvaccinated. The other was a man older than 65, living in the community who died in January 2021, which predates the widespread availability of vaccinations. Matyas said his department is currently reviewing death certificates from the pandemic to see if any related to Covid have not been reported. "There are still several dozen to go through," Matyas said. "Some deaths of Solano County residents died outside the county." The number of deaths since vaccines were readily available to the See Matyas, Page A5

Russia launches new attacks as Biden seeks massive aid package Tribune Content Agency DNIPRO, Ukraine — Ending days of relative calm in the Ukrainian capital, Russia on Thursday bombarded Kyiv – even as the head of the United Nations visited and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – while also ramping up attacks along the besieged country’s eastern front, Ukrainian officials said. The attacks came as President Joe Biden announced he was seeking $33 billion in additional military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine and also sought congressional approval to seize the assets of Russian oligarchs who support Russian President Vladimir Putin and use the funds to help Ukraine. “The cost of this fight is not cheap, but caving to aggression is more costly,” Biden said in announcing the new package to be spent over the next five months. The explosions came as U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres was winding up a day of meetings in the capital with Zelenskyy and others to discuss the evacuation of civilians from the nearly obliterated southern port city of Mariupol, among other issues. Guterres and his team were uninjured, the U.N. said. He also inspected the sites of suspected atrocities committed by Russian forces and denounced the “evil” of the Kremlinordered invasion.

Ukraine has not confirmed any new evacuations from the city, which Russia has otherwise largely overtaken. As the war raged on Thursday, Ukraine See Ukraine, Page A5
