Airbnb party in Pittsburgh turns deadly with shooting Tribune Content Agency PITTSBURGH — Two people were killed and several more were injured in a shooting at a home in Pittsburgh’s East Allegheny neighborhood early Sunday in what the mayor called a “senseless loss of life.” Up to 200 people – many of them underage – were attending a large party at an Airbnb rental property near the intersection of Suismon Street and Madison Avenue on the North Side when dozens of shots rang out around 12:30 a.m., officials said. Two juvenile males were killed, and eight other people were wounded by the gunfire. Police Chief Scott Schubert said five other people suffered non-gunshot-related injuries while fleeing the scene. Officials said no one had been detained, and there were no suspects as of Sunday afternoon. The motive behind the shooting also was not clear. Police believe there were multiple shooters, Schubert said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. "We're not going to sleep until we get who did this,” Schubert said. “This shouldn’t have happened. We're sick about it. We're going to do everything we can to get those responsible for it." Schubert said the ShotSpotter monitoring system registered more than 90 rounds fired. Public safety officials had initially said more than 50 shots were fired. Shell casings from around the area indicated there were multiple firearms used during the melee. Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz said earlier Sunday that some of the victims suffered broken bones and cuts as they jumped out of windows of the home while fleeing the gunfire. Some gunshot victims were transported to hospitals by Pittsburgh EMS and police, and others arrived at hospitals within and outside city limits via private transportation, Cruz said. Stephanie Waite, a spokeswoman for Allegheny Health Network, said the system treated See Pittsburgh, Page A8
Late-season storms bring Sierra snow Tribune Content Agency A series of late-season storms pummeled the Sierra Nevada with several feet of snow, drawing skiers to the mountains on Easter Sunday as more snow is expected to fall this week. In the last week, upper portions of the mountains around Lake Tahoe received 1 to 3.5 feet of snow, said Dawn Johnson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno. "It's pretty unusual to get storms like this, this late in the year," Johnson said. "We still have two more coming in this week." Tim LeRoy, a spokesperson for Mammoth Mountain, said the area received 14 to 16 inches of snow. "It'll sort of freshen things up through the remainder of this ski season," said LeRoy, adding that Mammoth will be open through at least Memorial Day. "Snow in Mammoth is water for the rest of California, so the more of it the better." Johnson said the storms have resulted in bumps in the snow water equivalent, or how much water is contained in the snowpack. She said it marks the first increase since December, "which of course is going to help considering that we spent so many months during our wet season being so dry." Johnson added, "It helps the drought but by no means eradicates the drought." Officials cautioned drivers coming up mountain passes to be prepared for snow-covered roads, as authorities have reported a series of weather-related wrecks and spinouts. "We just want to make sure anybody coming up here is prepared for winter conditions," Johnson said. "The worst time frames are always going to be in the nighttime into the early morning hours." Mariupol on brink as Ukrainian fighters defy surrender demand Tribune Content Agency SEVERODONETSK, Ukraine — A Russian deadline for Ukrainian troops to surrender in the devastated port city of Mariupol came and went Sunday in a pitched battle whose outcome could change the course of the war. A few thousand Ukrainian fighters bunkered in the Azovstal steelworks plant were offered a chance to lay down their arms, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. But the Ukrainian side appears to have rejected the offer, and Russia’s military warned that troops who refused “will be destroyed.” In an address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that the strategic coastal city was on the verge of being lost, saying Ukraine’s troops were outnumbered 6 to 1 and the situation there “remains as severe as possible.” “Russia is deliberately trying to destroy everyone who is there,” said Zelenskyy, who also warned that
Ukraine may walk away from peace talks with Russia if troops continue to commit atrocities in the city. Mariupol, which has endured almost two months of fighting, has become one of the starkest examples of Moscow’s brutal tactics in the invasion of its smaller neighbor. Officials say more than 20,000 people have been killed there. An estimated 100,000 civilians remain in siege conditions, with no food, water or heating, local officials and aid groups say. Speaking to CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said remaining Ukrainian soldiers and a large group of civilians “are basically encircled by the Russian forces.” The badly damaged city “doesn’t exist anymore,” he said. “They decided to raze the city to the ground at any cost.” Still, Mariupol has become a symbol of defiance for Ukrainians for refusing to bow even as many of its buildings lie in ruins and its people are buried in mass graves. A takeover of the city, which
lies on the Sea of Azov, would be a significant victory for Russia in a war marked by its forces’ missteps. A win there would not only provide a land bridge from the east to Russian-annexed Crimea, but would also free up Russian forces to move north and link up with the other thrust of the Russian offensive coming from the city of Izyum, some 144 miles north, and complete their encirclement of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, the stated objective of the second phase of Russia’s invasion. The escalating battle for Mariupol comes as Russian troops press their offensive on cities and towns in the east. On Sunday, the United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry said Russia was deploying additional combat and support equipment from Belarus to locations close to Kharkiv and Severodonetsk. “Russian artillery continues to strike Ukrainian positions throughout the east of the country” as part of what the defense ministry said was a See Ukraine, Page A8
Pope Francis calls for end to all wars during his Easter blessing Tribune Content Agency ROME — Marking Easter Sunday with the traditional "Urbi et Orbi" (To the City and the World) blessing, Pope Francis has urgently called for an end to all wars and conflicts worldwide. "We have seen too much bloodshed, too much violence," the head of the Catholic Church said in front of roughly 100,000 worshippers on St. Peter's Square in Rome. Much like the disciples after the resurrection of Jesus Christ celebrated on Easter, today "our hearts are filled with fear and terror when so many of our brothers and sisters had to lock themselves up to protect themselves from the bombs," Francis said. "May a new dawn of hope soon rise over this terrible night of suffering and death!" the pope said, urging states to relent. "Let peace be chosen. Let there be no more flexing of muscles while people suffer." He said: "In my heart I carry all the many Ukrainian victims, the millions of refugees and internally displaced persons, the families torn apart, the

razed to the ground." He also recalled the many sufferings in conflicts elsewhere in the world, such as the Middle East, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Myanmar and parts of Africa. "Let us be overwhelmed by the peace of Christ!" concluded Francis. Peace is possible, peace is a duty, peace is the primary responsibility of all!"
