FAIRFIELD — Bill Box was flying cargo deliveries out of San Jose back in 1979 when he experienced his first bird strike incident. “We were in the clouds, and so we just heard a big bang, and then the blood splattered across the windshield,” said Box, 67, of Vacaville. Box went on to work for American Airlines, and experienced several more bird strikes, but is now retired. He owns a small plane and a helicopter, which he keeps at the Nut Tree Airport. Box said the most significant event he experienced was when a bird hit the plane just below the copilot’s window, breaking several of the support stringers, but did not penetrate the skin of the aircraft.

A KC-10 lands at Travis Air Force Base, Sept. 19, 2014. “The worst case scenario,” he said, “would be (a bird) coming through a windshield and knocking you out.” He said that is not a likely scenario for commercial or military aircraft, but smaller planes and especially helicopters could be vulnerable. And, of course, as made famous by the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson,” pilot Chesley “Sully”
Sullenberger landed his US Airways Airbus on the Hudson River after the aircraft hit a flock of geese. The Federal Aviation Administration reports that there were about 1,800 wildlife strikes in 1990, and 16,000 in 2018. “Expanding wildlife populations, increases in number of aircraft movements, a trend toward faster and quieter aircraft, and outreach to the aviation community all have contributed to the observed increase in reported wildlife strikes. As a result of the increase in wildlife strikes, there has been greater emphasis on wildlife strike hazard research and airfield wildlife management,” the agency notes on its webpage. “For over two decades, the FAA See Birds, Page A12
Travis hears report on mental health of students in district Susan Hiland SHILAND@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — It is a tsunami of needs that has impacted our schools, according to Allyson Rude Azevedo, Director of Student Service, at the Travis school board meeting, Tuesday evening. She along with Sylvia Crowder, School Social Worker, provided an
overview of the mental health and climate of the school district. The revelations rocked the attending parents, causing much outrage. In February of this year an anonymous survey was handed out to students from elementary school through high school to judge how things were going emotionally for them. The number of
respondents was high with nearly 97% of students responding to the survey from grades three through 12. They were asked to answer a few questions on how they were feeling about certain topics for this school year alone. The study looked at protective factors like school connection, caring adults at school, high expectations from school
and feeling safe at school. It also compared these results against Risk Factors like harassment and bullying, chronic sadness and suicidal ideation/self-harm. Most students in the protective factors category felt a connection to school along with having adults who care about them in the school. For See Report, Page A12
