DIXON — The music wafted through the air as visitors listened with family and friends during the HopSpring Festival at Ruhstaller Farm. This was an official welcome-to-spring event for the brewery, which opened its doors almost a year ago this month. “We wanted to bring in talented musicians with original music,” Manager Jan Erik Paino said. “No cover bands today but a chance for artists to showcase their amazing talents.” With five bands there was music until dusk, along with a little shopping as the farm also had about 10 vendors and a food truck serving lunch. Some people chose to bring their own food and sit on hay bales or on benches. Paino considers the business a farm See Festival, Page A10

UKRAINE | RUSSIA CRISIS
Zelenskyy urges direct talks with Putin Tribune Content Agency LVIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday as Russian forces pushed deeper into the beleaguered southern port city of Mariupol, with heavy street battles shutting down a major steel plant and hampering rescue efforts. Military skirmishes erupted across the heart of Mariupol’s city center, obstructing local efforts to rescue hundreds of people believed to be trapped in the basement of a theater struck by a bomb or missile Wednesday. Russia denied bombing the theater, which was being used to protect children. “The city is leveled to the ground,” a member of the Azov regiment that is defending Mariupol said Saturday on Telegram as tanks moved in and Russian forces continued to strike from the air. Meanwhile on Saturday, the Russian military said it had deployed its Kinzhal, or Dagger, aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles – high-speed weapons that can See Putin, Page A10
FAIRFIELD — Coming from the Philippines where she said many young girls had to choose between “education and food,” 18-year-old Trisha Macagba feels like she has been given the gift of a lifetime. The Rodriguez High School senior was recently awarded a $220,000 scholarship from the Los Angeles Strategic Office Recruitment Detachment. It’s an ROTC program that promotes diversity and inclusion where she will par-
ticipate at the college of her choice, followed up by a four-year commitment to the U.S. Army upon graduation. “I still can’t believe it,” Macagba said. “We came from the Philippines. My parents were worried how we were going to pay to get our education.” Macagba is the daughter of Rodolfo Macagba Jr. and Pamela Peralta Macagba. Her brother Joshua is a student at Suisun Valley K-8 School. Rodolfo Macagba is a physical therapist and his wife Pamela, also trained as a physical
therapist, works at Walmart. To say their daughter Trisha is active in school would be an understatement. She carries a 4.6 GPA, is a student representative on the Fairfield-Suisun School District Governing Board, head of the Staff Engagement Program at Rodriguez, chairwoman of the Student Advisory Council at the school, and is currently working on a student bill of rights. She also played JV basketball and helps with volunteer work at her church. See Student, Page A10

Brandon Brown is a flight instructor in Monterey.
VACAVILLE — Brandon Brown was 16 when he climbed into the co-pilot’s seat of a Piper Saratoga that had come over to the Sacramento McClellan Airport from the Nut Tree Airport for a Young Eagles event. Brown, 23, cannot remember the pilot’s name, but the experience was so exhilarating it inspired him to pursue a career as a flight instructor. “And I was afraid of heights,” Brown recalls.
So it was not entirely comfortable for the George Washington Carver High School student when the plane
