VACAVILLE — Summertime is around the corner and the city is gearing up for camps and classes to keep children entertained. “We wanted to get out here as soon as possible to get the kids signed up for summer classes and camps,” Bridget Hough of Vacaville said Saturday during the city’s Recreation Expo. She has four children and her son, Edward, 7, is already in the music class and having a fun time. “Most classes fill up fast. We wanted to get in early,” Hough said. The Vacaville Recreation Expo usually draws hundreds for a chance to sign up early and see what camps, classes and clinics the city is offering for the summer. “I am so excited to be able to do this again,” said Kerry Walker, director of Parks and Recreation. “We weren’t sure it was going to happen in January.” But they were able make use of the Ulatis Community Center. The four-hour event offered games, raffles and opportunities for children and adults. The city received $100,000 this year for scholarships to Youth Programs through Measure M. “Each family can receive $1,000 to go to the cost of classes,” Walker said. “There should be no barrier to a kid being able to enjoy the city programs,” City Councilman Michael Silva said.

FAIRFIELD — Gary St. Vincent and his wife, Theodora, plan to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary this year. The couple has three children and a 6-year-old granddaughter. St. Vincent hopes to be able to watch his granddaughter grow up, but the 60-year-old auto shop teacher at Fairfield High School is in need of a kidney transplant. He just completed his first week of in-center treatments
at the DaVita Fairfield Dialysis Center after about two years of home treatments. He goes three times a week. Each session lasts three to four hours. Dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that removes waste and extra fluids from the blood through use of a filter. “This is no way to live,” St. Vincent said in a phone interview during one of those sessions. An avid swimmer, St. Vincent is no longer able to enjoy that activity.
“I enjoyed swimming. That was my passion. After having to do dialysis, I could no longer swim because I have a tube in my stomach, so I can’t swim in pools or lakes,” St. Vincent said. The tube was inserted for use in his home peritoneal dialysis treatments. He could dip into the ocean if he chose to do so due to the saltwater, and he does do some cycling. St. Vincent is able, however, to continue with another passion, which is See Donor, Page A9
Cease-fire in 2 southern Ukrainian cities falls apart Tribune Content Agency KYIV, Ukraine — Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its 10th day on Saturday with a ceasefire quickly falling apart in two besieged southern cities and Russian President Vladimir Putin warning that any no-fly zone imposed over Ukrainian skies “would bring catastrophic results not only to Europe, but to the whole world.” As Russia continued shelling civilian targets and Ukrainian protesters defiantly waved blue and yellow flags in multiple

to declaring war” and he also threatened to strip Ukraine of its statehood if it continues to resist the
invading army. “If they continue to do what they are doing, they are calling into question the future of Ukrainian statehood,” Putin said during a televised meeting with flight attendants from Russian airline Aeroflot, which has been forced to ground nearly all of its international flights because of the Western sanctions. “And if this happens, it will be entirely on their conscience.” Putin has repeatedly sought to blame Ukrainian leadership for fueling the unprovoked invasion, while stepping up censor-
ship at home, including blocking access to Facebook and some foreign news sites, vastly limiting Russians’ knowledge
