Councilman will run if Spering stays on course to step down Todd R. Hansen

FAIRFIELD — Councilman Chuck Timm said if Supervisor Jim Spering does not run for reelection, he will seek the District 3 county seat. “If Mr. Spering does not run, I will run for his seat,” Timm said in a phone interview Monday. He has been on the Fairfield council for almost 12 years. “If he decides to run, I would applaud that decision because I think he has been a great asset to the county,” Timm said, calling Spering a “great mentor” to him over the years. Spering last week said that at this moment he does not intend to seek re-election, but left open the possibility he could change his mind. Timm said he thinks it is TIMM important to have county supervisors who understand the issues cities face and that he would bring a current perspective to the Board of Supervisors. Spering (Suisun City), as well as Supervisors John Vasquez (Vacaville), Mitch Mashburn (Vacaville) and Erin Hannigan (Vallejo) all served on city councils. Only Supervisor Monica Brown did not. She came out of the education sector and served on the Solano Community College board after a 39-year teaching career. Timm noted critical issues such as homelessness, crime and infrastructure all require strong county-city relationships. He said he would issue a formal statement when the time comes. Vasquez confirmed he will seek a sixth term on the Board of Supervisors. The candidacy period for local primary elections opens Feb. 14 and ends March 11. The candidacy period for Superior Court judgeships is from Jan. 31 through Feb. 9, the county Elections Office reports. The primary is scheduled for June 7.

FAIRFIELD — Councilwoman Catherine Moy confirmed Tuesday she is strongly considering a run at the 3rd District Board of Supervisors’ seat and expects to make a final decision by early February. Moy said she also is weighing the possibility of running for Fairfield mayor. “I’m ready to run, but I’m not 100%,” Moy said in a phone interview. “Obviously this community (Fairfield) has been good to me . . . and what I’m looking at is whether I can help a wider range of residents.” If she decides to run for the county post, she would be the second member of the current City Council to join the race – depending on whether MOY Supervisor Jim Spering steps down as he has said his intentions are, at least for now. Councilman Chuck Timm has said if Spering does not run for re-election, he is all in for the county office, citing the need to build on countycity relationships on critical issues, including homelessness. Moy said while she has supported Spering, and specifically notes his expertise on transportation issues, his decision to run or not will not affect her decision. “Even if Jim Spering is running, that would not deter me,” Moy said. Either way, she said he expects the 3rd District election to be contentious, and could mark a swing in county policymaking. Her emphasis, she said, would be on homelessness and changing the focus on how to address the problem. “We’ve all failed trying to ease homelessness, See Run, Page A8

Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard, the Call of Duty publisher, for $68.7B The Washington Post Microsoft Gaming will acquire Activision Blizzard – the embattled video game publisher behind such hit franchises as Call of Duty, Warcraft, Overwatch and Candy Crush – in a $68.7 billion deal, the company said in a blog post Tuesday. The proposed price would make Activision Blizzard the largest acquisition in Microsoft’s history, even as Activision Blizzard grapples with multiple lawsuits and claims of a toxic work environment. The announcement from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer comes as Activision Blizzard faces a series of crises. In July, the publisher was sued by California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH); the state agency’s suit alleging widespread gen-
