A new era of astronomy NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope launches in French Guiana
BALTIMORE — NASA’s revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope is hurtling away from Earth and toward deep space on a longawaited, high-risk mission that, if successful, will look deeper into the cosmic past than any telescope before. The Webb blasted off Christmas morning from the European Space Agency’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on South America’s northeast coast, and early reports from NASA suggest the mission is going swimmingly. This is, however, an unusually difficult mission involving an extraordinarily complicated instrument, and in the coming days and weeks the telescope will have to transform itself through a series of hardware deployments, each of which is critical to the telescope’s ambitious astronomy. Though relieved by the successful launch, NASA deputy administrator Pam Melroy acknowledged what everyone involved with the Webb knows: “We have some scary days ahead.” That NASA chose to forge ahead with a Christmas launch was a sign of how seriously the agency and the global scientific community takes this $10 billion mission, the long-delayed successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. Airlines’ US holiday flight cuts near 1,800 on crew shortages Tribune Content Agency Airlines’ U.S. flight cancellations neared almost 1,800 for the Christmas weekend, disrupting travel on one of the busiest periods of the year as the omicron-fueled wave of Covid-19 cases triggered air crew shortages. Saturday’s pullbacks erased at least 10% of the schedule at Delta Air Lines Inc., United Airlines Holdings Inc. and JetBlue Airways Corp., according to data tracker FlightAware.com. The cuts on Christmas Day in the U.S. totaled almost 900. “Like many businesses and organizations, we have seen an increasing number of sick calls from omicron,” JetBlue spokesperson Derek Dombrowski said in an emailed statement. “Despite our best efforts, we’ve had to cancel a number of flights, and additional flight cancellations and other delays remain a possibility as we see more omicron community spread.” Airlines’ tie-ups added to evidence of economic disruptions from the omicron variant, whose fast spread is causing havoc even See Flight, Page A12

FAIRFIELD — It’s been a month of transition for Fairfield Fire Chief Tony Velasquez. The 50-year-old Fairfield native has already turned in his company car and cleaned out his office. Deputy Chief Matt Luckenbach won’t officially take over as chief until a Change of Command Ceremony on Thursday but by all accounts it has already been done. Luckenbach led a promotion ceremony earlier in the month. Velasquez has been at his side helping to make the transition as smooth as possible. “Matt’s large and in charge now,” Velasquez said. “It’s an exciting moment for him.” It’s also an exciting moment for Velasquez, who will transition into retirement after taking the rein from then-

Velasquez’s plan is to spend more time with his wife, Carrie, and adult children, Anthony, 31, Justine, 28, and Mitchell, 22, play some golf and do some more traveling. He’d like to finally take the cellphone off 24/7, 365-day access, featuring all the text messages, the troubles and victories, reported to him, though See Chief, Page A12
