4 things to know about Biden’s omicron strategy Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — Warning in a speech from the White House that the fast-spreading omicron variant of the coronavirus “is serious and potentially deadly business for unvaccinated people,” President Joe Biden announced a winter strategy that he hopes will mitigate risks from the new wave of infections.

The speech followed federal officials’ confirmation Monday that omicron had quickly become the United States’ dominant variant, accounting for 73% of new cases, according to federal health officials.

Here’s what you need to know about this upcoming surge and the Biden administration’s response to it:

Biden is expanding the nation’s testing capacity, but not by much, experts say At-home rapid Covid-19 tests are becoming increasingly hard to find as many people flock to the stores to get tested ahead of the holidays. The White House said the federal government would purchase 500 million at-home Covid-19 test kits and mail them to Americans who want them, starting next month.

The move is designed to make it easier for people to skip long lines to get tested. But it ultimately but may not be enough, said Dr. Leana Wen, a public health professor at George Washington University.

If just half of all Americans requested just three test kits, this new stockpile would be depleted, Wen noted.

“Five hundred million tests sounds like a lot but it’s a drop in the bucket,” Wen said. “We should be getting to the point of having at least twice a week testing for every American family.”

FAIRFIELD — Reps.

John Garamendi and Mike Thompson announced this week that they intend to seek re-election in newly drawn Congressional districts that represent Solano County.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission on Monday finalized the maps for the new Congressional districts, as well as the state Senate and Assembly districts, and the boundaries for the Board of Equalization.

Certification of all the maps is expected to be completed on Dec. 27.

Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — California has a new congressional map after its independent commission voted late Monday to finalize a plan increasing the number of Latino-majority districts in the state and giving Democrats a chance to pick up more seats even as the overall delegation shrinks.

Latinos make up the majority of the voting population in 16 congressional districts under the new map, and a plurality of voters in another two districts. In its 2011 map, the state had 13 districts with a majority Latino population.

California was one of a handful of states that lost a seat in reapportionment earlier this year following the release of 2020 census results. Due to relative population loss, the state’s lost seat came out of Los Angeles County.

Comments by Vance and Pace brought up memories of encounters I had as a school teacher and administrator with teenagers in various stages of distress. I vividly recall the emotional trauma experienced by a high school senior named Julie whose boyfriend suddenly broke up with her. Upon learning of this from a friend in class, Julie smashed her fist through a glass paneled trophy case and severely

injured her hand.

I also recall the pain experienced by a junior named Harlan who received a B semester grade in history after an incredible record of straight A’s since he began receiving letter grades in elementary school.

Feelings of shame caused him to withdraw into himself; he started missing class, and he began drinking alcohol. It turned out that he felt overwhelming pressure from his parents to excel in school.

Finally, I remember a ninth-grader named Bobby who was the target of ongoing bullying and teasing by a small group of students. One day Bobby had suffered enough, and he attacked one of the bullies in the restroom with a metal bar taken from the metal shop classroom.

In these examples student reactions to stress were driven by emotion or avoidance. More rational, problem-solving strategies were simply not used.

In no case did the coping

mechanism used provide a successful outcome.

These are only a fraction of the stressful situations faced by adolescents each day in our public high schools. Beyond the fact that such behaviors often produce harmful outcomes, the larger point is that recognizing the signs of stress in teenagers and providing swift and effective interventions are ongoing and vitally important challenges for teachers and administrators. It is especially important that educators help students temper the emotional reaction that often accompanies a stressful event and draw upon other, more thoughtful, coping strategies.

Every day that last week before Christmas, my stepfather would shove

his crutches in his ’49 Ford and drive to the depot to wait for the train.

I would wait on the porch steps praying.

And every day he’d come back shaking his head, looking grim.

Finally, on Christmas Eve, he limped into the living room holding a box under one arm.

“Merry Christmas,” he muttered, dropping the box on the floor by the little Douglas fir. It was a case of tangerines.

We ate them all. They were good. But that night, for the first time, they tasted like Christmas.

And for me, they

always will.

I’ve seen a lot of Christmases since then, and received far more than my share of gifts.

I’ve also done a little giving and learned my mother was right. Giving is easy. Taking is hard.

In this season of giving, and through the coming year, I hope we’ll all know the joy giving to family and friends and strangers in need. But I also hope we’ll be willing to accept a little help, just to keep us humble.

When you find yourself in need, remember: Sometimes we give. Other times we take. And one

day, you will do the giving.

You don’t need to send me a Christmas card or New Year’s greeting (P.O. Box 922, Carmel Valley, CA 93924) unless, of course, you really want to.

May your stocking be filled, not just at Christmas, but every morning.

And in the toe, may you always find a tangerine.

FAIRFIELD — Solano County has reported the first death of a child due to Covid-19.

The infant, younger than 1 year old, died about a month ago and had been ill for about a month prior to that, Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said in a phone interview Monday.

“It’s tragic,” he said.

It takes the total of Covid-related deaths to 342, the county reported.

The child “did not appear to have any underlying health conditions . . . and, of course, the child was not vaccinated,” Matyas said.

Children that young are not allowed to be immunized.

Matyas said the infant contracted the virus almost certainly by being exposed to someone with the disease, probably a family member or friend, and, he added, it was far more likely from someone who had not been matyas vaccinated.

That is especially true if the person who transmitted the disease was asymptomatic and did not know he or she was infected.

While the Public Health Division is investigating in hopes of learning how the child was exposed, Matyas said a clear

VALLEJO — Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, announced that Isaac Ellis from his 5th Congressional District has been selected as the 2021 App Challenge winner for his Space Adventure V video game.

Each year, members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosts a districtwide Congressional APP Challenges for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. The seven-day positivity testing rate was 5.4%, up from 5% Friday.

County public health officials do not post case updates on Tuesdays.

The next update is scheduled late Wednesday afternoon.

FAIRFIELD — Solano County joined 11 other counties in filing a lawsuit asserting that Walmart over the past six years has been illegally disposing of hazardous waste in violation of several state laws, the Attorney General’s Office announced Monday.

The waste, the state contends, includes “alkaline and lithium batteries, insect killer sprays and other pesticides, aerosol cans, toxic cleaning supplies, electronic waste, latex paints, and LED light bulbs as well as confidential customer information.”

“Walmart’s own audits found that the company is dumping hazardous waste at local landfills at a rate of more than 1 million items each year. From there, these products may seep into the state’s drinking water as toxic pollutants or into the air as dangerous gases,” Attorney General Rob Bonta said in the announcement.

Based on the company audit, the state Department of Justice estimates “the company unlawfully disposes of approximately 159,600 pounds – or more than 1 million

items – of hazardous waste in California each year,” the announcement said.

The lawsuit contends Walmart has violated the Hazardous Waste Control Law, the Medical Waste Management Act, the Customer Personal Information Law and the Unfair Competition Law, the statement said.

The state, in 2010, reached a $25 million settlement with Walmart “for illegally disposing of hazardous waste,” the DOJ statement said.

“Despite the injunctive terms Walmart agreed to as part of the settlement, inspections beginning in 2015 found that Walmart was continuing to conduct operations in California in violation of state laws,” the statement said.

The other counties involved in the suit, along with the state Department of Toxic Substances Control, are Alameda, Fresno, Monterey, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Joaquin, Tulare and Yolo.

While the list of counties includes those that joined the lawsuit, the complaint covers all Walmart outlets in the state.

FAIRFIELD — The long-awaited Amy Tan author event is set to take place – after a couple of postponements – at 2 p.m.

March 20 at the Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre, 1010 Ulatis Drive.

Originally scheduled for March 2020, the event was postponed due to the uncertain nature of whether social gatherings would be permitted or advisable at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Existing ticket holders will have an opportunity to exchange their tickets for the new date from Jan. 3 to Feb. 6 at any Solano County Library branch location.

Solano County Library will release available tickets to the general public beginning Feb. 7.

Seating is limited and a ticket is required for admittance to the event.

The event celebrates Women’s History Month. Tan, The New York Times’ bestselling author of “The Joy Luck Club,” will share her memoir about life as a

writer in “Where the Past Begins.”

She will appear in conversation with Solano County writer Suzanne Bruce.

Tan is the author of “The Kitchen God’s Wife,” “The Bonesetter’s Daughter,” “The Valley of Amazement” and two children’s books.

She was also the co-producer and co-screenwriter of the film “The Joy Luck Club.”

Her essays and stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, and her work has been translated into

35 languages.

Tan is the subject of the PBS-produced documentary “Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir,” which premiered at Sundance in 2021 and can be streamed on Netflix.

May 4, 1947 — Nov. 21, 2021

Janet N. Mahan was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on May 4, 1947. She passed away at her home with her family by her side. She has been a resident of the area for 13 years and lived in Lake Almanor before moving to Potter Valley.

Janet was proud to have raised three wonderful children. She was a licensed vocational nurse and was honored to care and advocate for her patients.

She was a former member and Deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Napa, California.

Janet’s love of her family and encouragement to others in need will be a couple of things she will be remembered for. Her favorite quote was, ‘I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.’

Janet is survived by her spouse, Lloyd Mahan of Potter Valley, California; daughters, Teressa Morris of Sutherlin, Oregon, and Tina Simms of Potter Valley, California; sons, Jay Pence of Napa, California, and Marcus Mahan of Potter Valley, California; sister, Carol Hamilton of Napa, California; brother, Tim Hamilton; grandchildren, Christine Morris, Oregon, Devin Morris, Oregon, Caylie Soon, California, Rocky Pence, California, Gage Mahan, California.

She was predeceased by her mother, Vivian Hamilton; father, David Hamilton; and her sister, Diana Elliott.

Eula Mae Dunn

July 13, 1937 — Nov. 23, 2021

Eula Mae Dunn was born July 13, 1937, in Lula, Mississippi, the daughter of Robert Gross and Lucy Hudson. She went on to eternal life on Nov. 23, 2021.

She was loved by many, especially her family and friends.

She was joined in marriage to the late John L. Dunn in 1956 and subsequently moved to Fairfield thereafter.

One of her favorite pastimes was gardening. She loved growing vegetables and flowers and always proud of her accomplishments in that area. She often photographed her flowers and vegetables. She also loved to cook, which she loved doing since she was a little girl.

Eula love life to the fullest. Her grandchildren gave her the greatest joy. She didn’t know what it meant to be a great-grandmother, all were grandkids to her.

Most of her life, Eula was a homemaker, a ‘stay-athome Mom’ until she decided to seek employment at Anheuser-Busch, where she worked for about 15 years.

She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield for some 40-plus years.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her sisters, Flora Posey and Louise Shaw (Joe); children, John Dunn (Tamara), Audrey Montgomery (Ken), Melvin Dunn (Vicki) and Karl Dunn (Lisa); a host of grands and great-grands whom she loved dearly; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from all over the country.

Viewing will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. with funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W. Texas St., Fairfield, California.

If that happens, voters in the current 11th Assembly District would vote on the candidate to fill out Frazier’s term.

That includes voters in Solano, Contra Costa and Sacramento counties.

In Solano County, on

the same ballot, voters from the newly drawn 11th District would vote for their representative for the 2023-24 term, with the top two vote-getters in the primary squaring off in the November general election.

If the special election is held before June, then the current district voters would select Frazier’s replacement, then the new district voters would cast ballots in the June primary and November

general elections for the next term.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission, after a weekend of district boundary shifts in the Central Coast and parts of the Bay Area, has placed Solano County in a single Assembly district, labeling it as the 11th District – the same number as Frazier’s current district.

The commission is expected to finalize its vote Dec. 27 on the new district maps.

FAIRFIELD — Those who access the Fairfield website today and beyond will see a significant new look and upgrade.

The city officially launched its newly designed site at 9 a.m.

Wednesday, featuring new branding, improved navigation and new interactive tools. It’s designed in partnership with Granicus Vision, a national leader in national state and local government websites, based in El Segundo, now number-

ing over 1,500.

The intent is to put detailed government information at the fingertips of residents and visitors. have “Websites evolved quite a bit over the years, and we were long overdue,” said Bill Way, communications manager for the city.

“The last design was in late 2009. We are excited to bring a more userfriendly experience.

Efficiently providing information and services is our No. 1 priority as a city.”

Users can access key

features from the homepage, including a “How Do I?” tab, which takes them directly to their requested information. It also has friendlier navigation designs with the user in mind, consolidation of E-Service functions, and the most requested topics can be accessed from the home page.

A community calendar is able to be synced with user calendars. Users can also send feedback easily by clicking on the link from any page.

The new design is the result of feedback from staff and users, Way said.

“We wanted to be as inclusive as possible in the design process, and we are thrilled with the final product,” Way said.

Access to city social media sites is also easier.

Users can also subscribe to the city website to receive email or text alerts on popular pages.

“The new site will engage the public and provide vital information via desktop or mobile,” Way added.

Jeff Jewell, one of the organizers for the event – which dates back more than 30 years – said Monday that pies and dinner rolls are still needed to complete the meals for those who will get the dinners delivered on Christmas Eve. Donations of those items, or cash donations that can be used to buy them, are being accepted Thursday at the Veterans

Caltrans adds ‘complete street’ rule to get project funding Daily Republic Staff

FAIRFIELD — Any new construction project to receive Caltrans funding will have to have “safe and accessible options for people walking, biking and taking transit,” the state agency announced Monday.

“California must reduce dependence on driving without sacrificing mobility and accessibility,” Toks Omishakin, director of the state Department of Transportation, said in the announcement. “As Caltrans and local transportation agencies prepare for the influx of new federal infrastructure funding, it is important that we provide safe, convenient, sustainable and accessible alternatives

to driving to achieve our climate goals while equitably serving all Californians.”

The so-called “complete street” requirement also comes with a commitment from the state to “remove administrative barriers and partner with communities and local agencies to ensure more projects on state and local transportation systems improve the connectivity to pedestrian, bicycle and transit facilities, and accessibility to destinations.”

The agency announced there will likely be some projects for which the complete street provision is “not appropriate to the context or community of the project” and would not be required for funding approval.

Suspected kidnapper kills himself, forces closure of Peabody, Air Base Daily Republic Staff

FAIRFIELD — A suspected kidnapper died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a car crash Monday night in Fairfield, according to a press release from the Fairfield Police Department.

Shortly before 7 p.m., Fairfield Police’s Flock Safety cameras located a wanted felony vehicle from a neighboring jurisdiction. The vehicle and associated person were wanted in regard to an armed kidnapping

and carjacking.

With the assistance of further Flock Safety camera notifications, and a citizen calling in, officers were able to locate the vehicle in the area of Chuck Hammond Drive and Peabody Road.

Officers attempted to contain the driver, but he drove away and later crashed at the intersection of Peabody Road and Air Base Parkway, according to police. The intersection was shut down as officers attempted to communicate with the driver and de-escalate the situation.

When the officers could not get a response from the driver, a team approached the vehicle and found he was dead inside. Officers found a handgun and determined he died from a selfinflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The driver was a 38-year-old man from Oakland. His identity is being withheld at this time.

The kidnapping and carjacking happened previous to last night’s crash and the victim had previously been released and was not present, accord-

ing to police.

Peabody Road and Air Base Parkway were closed for approximately eight hours while the scene was processed by traffic investigators, detectives and crime scene investigators.

Based on a partnership with Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield Police notified them of the closure and restricted ability for base personnel to gain access through the main gate. Travis Air Force Base opened up the north gate for access until the main gate was accessible.

FAIRFIELD — The superior courts of Solano, Marin, Napa and Sonoma counties jointly announced the establishment of a judicial mentor program.

It is a regional collaboration in partnership with the Governor’s Office to advance the shared goal of an inclusive judiciary that reflects California’s diversity. Gov. Gavin Newsom launched the program in July, comprised of an appellate court mentor program and a trial court mentor program.

Fully-vaccinated Andy Cohen had Covid-19 again Tribune Content Agency NEW YORK — For fans wondering why Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show was airing reruns, it wasn’t due to him taking an early holiday break.

The Emmy Awardwinning reality TV kingpin revealed he was battling a breakthrough case of Covid-19.

Cohen returned to the New York city studios on Monday after quarantining for 10 days. This was the second time he tested positive for the virus.

“I am so happy I could cry right now,” he shared. “I had Covid.

That’s why we were gone all last week. And the best news is I woke up this morning to a negative PCR test.”

The 53-year-old father of one first confirmed he’d contracted again on Covid-19 Twitter, after announcing his return to the show.

Cohens nightly talk show, “Watch What Happens Live,” was also on rerun despite cable programming guides promoting new shows.

He explained: “People were wondering where we were this week and what was going on with our odd ‘Watch What Happens Live.’ I just didn’t show up a few nights. We had one episode that was pretaped – or two episodes that were pre-taped – that aired, so people were very confused,” he said. “So that’s what was going on.”

Turns out, orbiting Ganymede, which is one of Jupiter’s moons and the largest satellite in the solar system, kind of sounds like R2-D2.

Juno, which NASA launched in 2011 and began orbiting Jupiter in July 2016, is the eighth spacecraft to visit Jupiter, and the first to probe below the giant planet’s thick gas cover. It fought Jupiter’s extreme temperatures and hazardous radiation to survey its north and south poles, chugging along despite a lack of sunshine on its solar panels.

Uncovering the secrets behind Jupiter’s workings could shed light on the evolution of other planets and the formation of the solar system itself, said Scott Bolton, the Juno mission’s principal investigator.

“We’re trying to understand where we came from, how we got here,” Bolton told The Washington Post. “And Jupiter is a big part of that story.”

To accomplish that objective, the spacecraft has flown across the giant planet, mapping its magnetic field. The mission, which recently completed its 38th orbit, was

Among the issues outlined dodd are affordable housing and climateresilient infrastructure, as well as universal preschool and affordable college educations.

Garamendi will continue to represent his current 3rd District through 2022, and Thompson will continue to represent his current 5th District.

Supervisor Erin Hannigan said losing Thompson’s representation in the south county hurts. She said he brought more attention and resources to the Vallejo and Mare Island area than perhaps ever before.

However, she said the redrawn districts may provide greater opportunities as it relates to diversity because of the stronger connection to Contra Costa County, from which she said the district would benefit.

She also wondered, as she had in earlier comments, if there had been

some manipulation in the new 8th District boundaries.

“There is an interesting connection to the (new 8th) District, and that is all the Bay Area (oil) refineries are in that district,” Hannigan noted.

Solano, under the new maps, would be located in a single Assembly district, instead of being divided among three.

That new district would be the 11th District, which has been represented by Jim Frazier, who is stepping down at the end of the year.

A special election will be held to fill out the rest of his term through 2022, and would include voters from Solano, Contra Costa and Sacramento counties.

The regular primary and general elections, within the new boundaries, would determine the representative for the 2023-24 term.

Solano, under the new map, would continue to be located within the expansive 3rd Senate District represented by Bill Dodd, D-Napa. His current term ends in 2024.

Juno also discovered that the planet is being pelted by tiny but powerful particles from Mars.

Jupiter’s gravity acts like a gate pushing the micrometeorites out of its orbit – similar to how it may have bullied other ancient planets out of the solar system.

Scientists are now setting up to detail Jupiter’s ring. Much like Saturn and Uranus, the gas giant has a faint ring of dust created by two of its moons. The spacecraft already took a look at it from inside the ring – an observation that allowed the researchers to see the Perseus constellation from a different perspective.

“What always impresses me is we wind up discovering all kinds of stuff that we never anticipated,” said Jack Connerney, Juno’s deputy principal investigator.

Jupiter is unlike the eight other planets in our solar system. With the exception of a rocky core, the planet is made of gaseous and liquid elements. Surrounded by electrons, protons and ions that rapidly bounce around, Jupiter’s cloud cover has a layer of liquid metallic hydrogen. Its

core remains a mystery, but scientists believe a motley of diffused elements that are heavier than helium are at the very center. This configuration paves the way for a dynamo – or the source of a magnetic field – Connerney, an astrophysicist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said.

The result, he said, are “spectacular aurorae, or tremendous depositions of energy.” Much like our own Northern Lights, but thousands of times brighter.

With the data generated by Juno, Connerney and his team were able to map Jupiter’s magnetic field. Their study also revealed that the dynamo action stems from metallic hydrogen beneath a layer of helium raindrops.

The interior of the planet is dynamic as well.

It spins every 10 hours and holds raging wind jets that give Jupiter its Van Gogh-like swirls.

Within its southern latitudes, the Great Red Spot is essentially a hurricane that has been observed since the age of Galileo.

But scientists have found another formidable patch: the Great Blue Spot.

The Great Blue Spot “is really a magnetic anomaly,” said Connerney. Its name stems not from its color but from how magnetic field lines are drawn – sporting blue when they go into the planet. It also offers clues about the planet’s workings.

“We actually detected

a big change from the beginning of our Juno mission in 2016 to now,” he said. “We detected a change in the magnetic field that is equivalent to the eastward drift of the great blue spot in time, very slow about four centimeters per second but fast enough to circle the planet in about 350 years.”

The Great Blue Spot is being pulled away by Jupiter’s jet streams – a pattern that shows that the planet’s winds extend down much deeper than they originally believed.

The discovery of the anomaly getting turned around, Bolton, Juno’s principal investigator, could shed light into one of the biggest questions scientists are hoping to answer: How does Jupiter’s atmosphere work?

“This is really the first time that we’ve seen a magnetic field getting affected by the atmosphere,” he said. “It really demonstrates that its deep atmosphere is very dynamic, much more than people had thought.”

Uncovering Jupiter’s secrets, said Bolton, is a humbling experience – one that can make us feel like tiny specks but also reminds us of how much there is left to explore.

“Throughout history we often thought of ourselves as the center of everything because, in a sense, you’re looking out right from your own eyes and your own brain,” Bolton said. “But there are many things out there.”

Early morning crash requires Jaws of Life

SUISUN CITY — Police are investigating an early Tuesday morning accident.

Several bystanders contacted the Suisun City Police Department Dispatch at approximately 5:47 a.m. stating a minivan had collided with a tree on Sunset Avenue, just south of Railroad Ave., according to a Facebook post.

Officers, Suisun City Fire Department and Medic Ambulance arrived on the scene. The driver had to be extracted using the Jaws of Life and was taken to NorthBay Medical Center for the treatment of minor injuries, the post said.

While the smell of wood smoke may bring back fond memories for some, the reality is that wood-burning creates emissions widely recognized as harmful to our health. Wood burning is the greatest source of air pollution in the Bay Area during the winter, and emissions from wood burning can cause coughing, wheezing, asthma attacks, heart attacks, lung cancer and even premature death, among other negative health outcomes.

As with any type of air pollution, children are considered high risk. Their lungs are not fully developed until the age of 18 and exposure to higher levels of wood smoke can lead to reduced lung function and risk of future lung disease. For children with asthma, breathing wood smoke can lead to serious asthma attacks and breathing emergencies.

The American Lung Association offers the following tips for Bay Area residents to breathe easier this winter: n Explore climate-friendly alternatives to warm your home, such as solar panels and electric or geothermal heat pumps. n Enjoy the glow during

family gatherings by using electric fireplaces and logs that flicker without the health risks. n If you must burn fuel to heat your home or water, natural gas stoves and heaters have lower particle pollution emissions than wood-burning devices. n Directly vent heating devices outside the home to reduce exposure to carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and other emissions produced by these energy sources.

Remember that when the Bay Area Air Quality Management District calls a Spare the Air Alert for fine particle pollution, wood-burning is not allowed in the nine-county Bay Area.

What replacing Melvin with Kotsay means for A’s in 2022?

The Oakland A’s face an offseason full of uncertainty, but laid down one foundational brick on Monday.

The A’s have found their next manager from within the organization as Mark Kotsay is set to take over the job after Bob Melvin – the winningest

ANALYSIS manager in Oakland A’s history – who was released from his contract and left for the San Diego Padres manager spot earlier this offseason.

The organization has not yet announced the hire, which MLB Network’s Jon Heyman first reported and this organization confirmed. Kotsay

was the Oakland thirdbase coach last year, his seventh on Melvin’s staff.

Leaving the Padres’ hitting coach job in 2014, Kotsay joined Melvin’s staff as the bench coach in 2015 and moved to quality control coach in 2017 before taking on third base coach duties.

Kotsay has been cycled through a few new manager hiring seasons,

interviewed for open managerial jobs with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants in recent years.

His managerial and coaching skills translate from his strengths as a player with the A’s, Padres, Marlins, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red See Kotsay, Page B2

Chris Minner’s basketball teams are known for getting off to fast starts. While this year’s Midway University women’s squad struggled a bit out of the gate, sitting at 3-3 after an 87-79 loss to Pikeville on Nov. 15, the Eagles have hit their stride since.

Minner, who coached locally at Vacaville and Vacaville Christian high schools, has led Kentucky-based Midway to an 8-1 record since that midNovember setback, including wins in their last six games and first six contests in River States Conference play.

Last week the Eagles soared to a 102-55 bouncing of Brescia

n May, about two weeks after he was drafted by the 49ers in the third round, cornerback Ambry Thomas boldly predicted he’d by dominating after doing some studying.

“I’ve just got to get used to the whole playbook,” Thomas said. “But once I feel I’ve got that, it’s over. It’s over.”

Seven months later, however, Thomas’ NFL education is just beginning.

In the past two weeks, Thomas has officially enrolled in the school of hard knocks by being picked on by Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, Atlanta’s Matt Ryan and a host of social-media critics.

On Monday, after Thomas endured

“If it was easy, everybody would be doing it,” Thomas wrote. “Don’t forget.”

After seeing that tweet, I immediately thought of some hard-earned advice (that I don’t follow myself) for the 22-year-old: Don’t read the Twitter comments! I’m far less qualified to offer advice on football fundamentals, but my thought after reviewing his performance in the 49ers’ 31-13 win over the Falcons: React to the ball better when it’s in the air.

The encouraging news for the 49ers is that Thomas was often in excellent position against Atlanta, when he allowed three of

Ryan’s four longest completions. However, after turning his head to locate the ball in mid-flight, Thomas failed to make a play on the ball.

Wide receiver Russell Gage, who, like Thomas, is 6 feet tall, soared over the flat-footed cornerback to snag a 20-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 21-yard reception down the right sideline in the third. In the fourth quarter, tight end Kyle Pitts beat Thomas for a 49-yard catch on which Thomas was beaten so badly that he couldn’t recover despite Ryan’s slightly underthrown pass.

VACAVILLE — Vacaville High outscored Vallejo in all four quarters, including 21-8 in the first, en route to defeating the Red Hawks for the second time this season, 65-28, at Harold Youngblood Gymnasium, Tuesday.

Allyssa Shaffer led the Bulldogs (5-6) with 16 points and six rebounds, while Maggie Lopez added 11 points and seven rebounds, and Katie Driscoll had seven points and three steals.

“What really made this game fun was the defensive effort by the entire team,” Vacaville coach Kate Shipp Roberts said. “Their persistence on defense helped generate their offense.

They all bought into getting stops, rebounds and limiting Vallejo’s second chance points.”

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday at Davis.

Kotsay was known as a smart player who could read the game well as an observer.

“Couldn’t have a better hire for A’s players, A’s front office and A’s fan base. this dude checks all the boxes,” former teammate Dallas Braden said in a video on Twitter. “Incredible competitor, outstanding preparation and motor that doesn’t quit. The dude wants to win each and every day. Each and every ballgame. That’s all you can ask for.”

The hire is one of few transactions the A’s can make this month as the league’s lockout continues. Teams cannot make any moves involving players after the owners imposed a lockout following the Dec. 1 expiration of the collective bargaining agreement with the players’ association.

The former infielder played 17 seasons in the major leagues with seven different teams, including a stint from 2004-07 with the Athletics.

Though the A’s interviewed outside the organization, including Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada, Boston Red Sox bench coach Will Venable and Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro, they also looked internally. With cost-conscious the organization looking to trim even more fat from its barest bones, fiscally, an internal hire made most sense.

What does the Kotsay hire mean for the organization’s direction? It could go either way.

As a familiar face well versed in the A’s front office and coaching operations, Kotsay could be a guiding light for newcomers on a rebuilding team.

The Kotsay hire could also mean the A’s want to maintain some familiarity with most of the core they may just keep another year. That the 2022 team will look anything like the 2021 team seems a long shot given front office hints that we should expect a roster overhaul in Oakland. However there is no indication ownership has passed down a directive on the team’s financial direction for next season. The offseason freeze will keep that uncertainty suspended for, at least, another month.

Next year’s roster remains a mystery, but at least there is a skipper at the wheel to man this rudderless boat.

The Gamecocks are now the first team since Baylor in 2011-12 to win multiple regular season matchups between No. 1 and No. 2 teams, adding Tuesday’s win to a top-two victory over thenNo. 2 UConn in November.

Here’s what we learned about the Gamecocks.

HENDERSON MAKES A DIFFERENCE Henderson hadn’t seen the floor since the first half against North Carolina A&T on Nov. 29, and her return from a leg injury Tuesday night was exactly what the Gamecocks needed.

Henderson played a principle role in the Gamecocks’ third-quarter comeback, in which South Carolina outscored Stanford 22-7 after going into halftime with a 14-point deficit.

Henderson grabbed five steals in the third quarter, contributing to South

Carolina’s 12 points off Stanford turnovers in that period.

Henderson finished the night playing 31 minutes after Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley told ESPN’s Andraya Carter before the game she wouldn’t be limited. She scored 17 points and added seven assists and seven steals to her stat line Tuesday.

My 2021 Christmas wish list to Santa Claus

t’s almost Christmas so it’s time for me to ask Santa for some gifts I’d really like to see this Christmas and for the coming year.

Santa, can you bring Hollywood some original ideas so they’ll stop trying to force-feed us remakes and sequels? OK, yes, I’m going to see the new “Spiderman” and “Matrix” sequels but I’d like to see more original fare.

Is it possible to make a new “The Many Saints of Newark” series on HBO a thing? I know that appears to contradict my last request, but “The Many Saints of Newark” is a prequel to “The Sopranos.” Sue me.

And while we’re talking about streaming services, can you gift the world with a cap on streaming channels? What’s the Kelvin Wade point of dropping cable if we’re paying for Netflix, YouTube TV, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+ and Amazon Prime?

If you want to drop me your Netflix password, that would be cool, too.

Just curious. Can you explain why I have a half-dozen streaming services with new movies, series, documentaries, specials and foreign films at my disposal yet I often end up watching movies I’ve already seen or old episodes of “Good Times” and “All in the Family?”

With new releases by Billie Eilish, Drake, Lil Nas X, Adele, Kool and the Gang, Styx, Santana and Iron Maiden, 2021 has been a great year for music. So can you bring us a slate of hot new music for 2022? While you’re at it, can you gift the younger generation with the knowledge that “old school” doesn’t refer to music from the ’90s?

Father Christmas, would it be too much to ask to have Metallica perform the “Sunday Night Football” theme next season?

For my Las Vegas Raiders, can you deliver them a defense, an offensive line, a competent coaching staff and . . . can you just bring a new team?

Santa, how about bringing all public restrooms little foot handles at the bottoms of doors so we can use our feet to open the door instead of having to do the paper towel thing?

Just saying.

Saint Nicholas, could you bring those of us who work with the public a little more patience so we don’t go upside their heads and end up on the naughty list next year?

And can you bring my girlfriend some ideas to get her on my naughty list?

And Tony, I have one of those Womanspeak Translators you want. I read the last paragraph to Cathi and she said, “You think you’re funny.”

The translator flashed red and said, “Run!” Can you send some elves to wrap Betty White in bubble wrap so she’s safe and secure until her 100th birthday next Jan. 17?

Santa, can you explain why in the Rudolph song it assumes we know all the names of your reindeer and then asks if we recall the most famous one? How would we know the names of all your other obscure reindeer and not remember the most famous one?

This might be a heavier lift, but could you possibly cancel the word “cancel” in 2022?

Bring Americans some common sense so we’re able to discern fact from fiction and the truth from conspiracy theories. Perhaps spray some kind of aerosolized common sense serum from your sleigh like chemtrails. (I’m kidding.

Chemtrails aren’t real. Like birds. Kidding again. Birds are real.)

Kris Kringle, could you bring me one of those full body suits that John Travolta used to go to school in in the 1976 made-for-TV movie, “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” so I can go about my business with no worries during this pandemic.

Speaking of our old nemesis, Covid-19, can you deliver FDA approval of Pfizer’s new Covid pill so Covid-19 can just be a manageable condition and we can all stop talking about it, thinking about it and shaping our lives around it?

Saint Nick, for next year, could you bring a sequel to my brother Tony’s book, “Growing up in Fairfield, California” and maybe two new collections of short stories and a nonfiction book from yours truly? That’d be awesome.

Lastly, how about more laughter, fewer tears, more hope and fewer fears? Merry Christmas!

Build Back Better was unusual in seeking to realize an expansive partisan agenda in a very narrowly divided Congress. Neither Bill Clinton nor Barack Obama tried to enact such large and far-reaching changes in spending when they had much larger margins.

The next stage of grief will be despair over the future of the Biden administration, if not that of democracy itself. Democrats have managed to make the bill a serious test for Biden’s presidency without ever having conveyed to the public what it’s even about.

But Democrats are going further, saying that Manchin has crippled Biden politically, both because they hope it will get the senator to change his mind and because they really are that worked up about what they see as his obstinacy.

Clinton managed to get re-elected after his health-care initiative collapsed – and that was a longdrawn-out collapse, complete with an address to a joint session of Congress. Clinton’s comeback, however, involved moving rightward and scaling back his ambitions. His greatest legislative accomplishment following the health debacle was a center-right retrenchment of welfare policy. He said the era of big government was over, which was not really true but signaled that he would not repeat his mistakes.

The Clinton example of success after legislative defeat is, then, not one today’s Democrats are especially interested in learning from. Let’s see how well yelling at Senator Manchin works instead.

hen the Wachowski siblings, Lana and Lilly, changed the film landscape (and popular culture) forever with 1999’s “The Matrix,” a philosophical sci-fi film that questioned the very nature of existence itself, it was no surprise that the studio behind the movie, Warner Bros., asked them to make a few more. They obliged in 2003, with “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” though the sequels effectively killed off the idea that we’d ever hang with Neo and Trinity again. But the powers that be will always want more, and so another sequel to the trilogy, “The Matrix Resurrections,” arrives 18 years later. But this isn’t just another rehash.

Rather, the film asks us to question the utility of sequels, reboots and the constant churn of intellectual property, especially when the original lesson of “The Matrix” was to awaken oneself to the system, and then bring the whole thing crashing down.

Lana Wachowski enthusiastically takes on this almost impossible task of plugging back into the Matrix to mine the code for new ideas. Lana’s sister Lilly sits out “The Matrix Resurrections,” but Wachowski has brought on writer David Mitchell, who wrote the novel “Cloud Atlas,” which the Wachowskis adapted to the screen in 2012, as well as Aleksandar Hemon, a writer on their Netflix series “Sense8,” to co-write the script. HHH (out of four) is a swift, self-reflective, often funny and always original reimagining of the material, which sees Wachowski reassessing the existing characters and lore of “The Matrix,” while embroidering the text with new ideas and details. It’s less of a reboot than a remix, and this time, it’s a bop.

Wachowski has infused the world with an exciting new cast of characters, playing roles both familiar and fresh. It feels good to be back with these beloved characters, some of whom have taken on new, and it must be said, hotter, forms (looking at Jonathan Groff and Yahya Abdul-Matteen II, specifically).

The story of “The Matrix Resurrections” is indeed familiar too. A man named Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) leads a repetitive, uninspiring life behind a desk, who has the nagging feeling that there’s something else out there for him. But this time around, he’s a video game designer, the brains behind a revolutionary game called “The Matrix,” the narrative of which is essentially the first trilogy of films. The game came from his memories of his time as Neo, not that he’s necessarily aware of that. As his boss, Smith (Groff) presses Thomas and his

team for a remake of the game, a new group of Matrix-hopping hackers, including the awesome Bugs (Jessica Henwick), is ripping through the code, searching for Neo. When they find Thomas, and once again offer him the red pill to escape the Matrix, the renewed Neo only has one goal: go back and find his one true love Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss).

This film is all about the “re,” the reboot, remix, reimagining, reassessment, the (literal) resurrection of the man who died for our machines, and the Neo myth has influenced a whole new generation, including Bugs and her tough, androgynous, multiculti crew.

The new blood brings new life to the text, which could otherwise be just a clever dig at sequel culture, but the film is also deeply earnest, and deeply felt, especially when it comes to the core love story, the swooning romance between Neo and Trinity.

Wachowski brings this unapologetic earnestness and sense of pleasure to “The Matrix Resurrections,” which is also a welcome reminder that big action films can be well lit, stunningly designed and yes, colorful, too. She invites the audience to have as much fun as she’s having revisiting this world that initially defined her career, and seems to apply her full self to this text, bringing an irreverent and infectious zeal to the resurrection. The fact that this ends with an exaltation to “paint the sky with rainbows!” tells you all you need to know about her attitude in this latest trip into the Matrix.

‘Jagged Little Pill’ musical won’t return to Broadway, due to omicron Tribune Content Agency NEW YORK — With one hand in her pocket, Alanis Morissette is saying goodbye to Broadway.

“Jagged Little Pill,” the musical based on Morissette’s 1995 album of the same name, will shutter permanently on Broadway after the current Covid-19 shutdown, the show announced late Monday.

“We are so proud of this extraordinary show, and this extraordinary company, who every night in difficult circumstances, have told the ‘Jagged Little Pill’ story.

This show about healing, human connection, and catharsis, has been a salve to audiences, and to all of us, throughout these trying times,” producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price said in a joint statement.

“Yet, the drastic turn of events this week with the rapid spread of the omicron variant has, once again, changed everything. We are dismayed by what appears to be another substantial public health crisis, and – due to the detection of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the company – need to prioritize the health and safety of the cast, crew, and entire team working on ‘Jagged Little Pill.’ ” All tickets for scheduled performances will be refunded.

The show, starring Elizabeth Stanley, Sean Allan Krill, Celia Rose Gooding, Derek Klena and Lauren Patten, was nominated for 15 Tony Awards and won two, as well as a Grammy Award for best musical theater album.

“Jagged Little Pill,”

with music by Morissette and Glen Ballard, lyrics by Morissette and book by Diablo Cody, told the story of the Healys, an upper middle class suburban family in Connecticut facing the everyday realities of racism, sexuality and addiction.

The musical received rave reviews from critics and fans, but also faced controversy behind the scenes, over the Broadway decision to turn the nonbinary character of Jo into a cisgender woman and allegations from nonbinary actor Nora Schell that the show’s stage manager ignored their need to get surgery for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Gooding, who starred as daughter Frankie, and Antonio Cipriano, who played her love interest, both left the production in September, blaming the treatment of trans and nonbinary actors.

“I cannot ignore the harm ‘Jagged’ has done to the trans and non-binary community, including cast members on stage, off stage, and behind the scenes in the production making process,” Gooding wrote in a lengthy statement.

“I believe it will be in my best personal interest to focus more on work that I can align myself with emotionally and morally, just as Frankie would.”

As of this week, more than one-third of Broadway shows have canceled performances due to breakthrough Covid-19 cases among cast and crew. “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Hamilton,” “Aladdin” and “MJ” have all canceled shows through at least Christmas, but “Jagged Little Pill” is the first to turn the lights off permanently.

Two years after looking overwhelmed in a meaningful rotation role, Jordan Poole is a candidate for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award. Wiggins, long derided for questionable defense and shot selection, is now a perimeter stopper shooting 42.2% from 3-point range on 5.3 attempts per game.

If the Warriors can transform those two into key pieces of a winning team, why can’t they do the same with Wiseman, Kuminga and Moody?

Whenever Wiseman returns from knee surgery, he’ll provide something Golden State is lacking: a rim-running big man who excels as a screen-setter for Curry. Wiseman’s ability to throw down lobs and execute pick-and-rolls will only add to the Warriors’ championship blueprint.

During its recent dynasty, Golden State rode a position-less, uptempo style to three titles in five years. The emergence of such high-level big men as Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid and Deandre

Ayton across the NBA, however, might raise an intriguing question: Will the Warriors require dominant interior players to again make annual Finals appearances?

Wiseman looked raw during his rookie season, which should come as no surprise given that he only played 69 minutes in college and didn’t have an NBA Summer League upon which to draw experience. But the Warriors believe that, given his work ethic and physical tools, he could still become a franchise center.

Kuminga might have even higher upside. At 6-foot-7 with a 6-11 wingspan and strong scoring instincts, he draws comparisons to Kawhi Leonard and Jaylen Brown. As Kuminga’s 26-point outburst in Saturday’s loss to Toronto reinforced, he can already get to the rim and knock down jumpers against NBA defenders.

But Kuminga also committed six turnovers and corralled just one rebound in those 36 minutes, which underscored why he has had a tough time cracking the regular rotation. For all of his natural ability, Kuminga is still learning the game.

Shortly after his career night against the Raptors, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr pulled Kuminga aside and said,

“If we were a lousy team, you’d be doing this every night. You’d be on the all-rookie team and scoring a bunch of points, and everybody would be saying how great Kuminga is. But you wouldn’t be learning how to win.”

Furthermore, the Warriors wouldn’t have the luxury of ironing out his mistakes in the G League – a level that proved instrumental in the development of Poole. There may be a world five years from now – when Curry, Thompson and Green are nearing retirement – in which Wiseman, Kuminga and Moody have joined Poole as the collective face of the team’s next era.

That is a tantalizing prospect, one not worth sacrificing for a shot at someone like Sabonis, Beal or Simmons.

Football Kyle DeVan (Vacaville) was announced as the new offensive line coach at Colorado, Tuesday. He spent the 2021 season as an offensive analyst with Michigan and will join the Buffaloes after the Wolverines are done in the College Football Playoffs, according to a Colorado release. Michigan plays Georgia in the semifinals on Dec. 31.

DeVan, an Oregon State graduate, has also spent time coaching at OSU, USC, the New Orleans Saints, Ball State and the University of Arizona.

Jake Levengood (Vacaville) started for Oregon State in a 24-13 loss to Utah State in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. Levengood played in eight games this season for the Beavers, who finished 7-6.
