SUISUN CITY — America’s military veterans were honored Thursday afternoon during a ceremony at the waterfront, organized by Councilwoman Wanda Williams. “We made sure the sun was shining and the wind was gently blowing,” Suisun City Mayor Lori Wilson told the crowd. It’s OK to enjoy the day, she said, as long we remember the significance of the many Americans who have served in the military. The odds were some of those attending had fought for the nation’s freedom. Wilson also offered praise for military families. Nate Stonestreet, the pastor of First Christian Church, offered a prayer thanking veterans for their service and asking for healing for those who have been affected physically and psychologically by their service. Rep. John Garamendi asked all veterans to raise their hands and noted a Battle of the Bulge veteran was part of See Suisun, Page A10

VACAVILLE — A sizable crowd gathered Thursday under the sun-dappled trees at the Creekwalk Plaza in Downtown Vacaville for this year’s Veterans Day celebration and ceremony. Tots, seniors and everyone in-between showed up to honor those who have served our country. The ceremony was led by U.S. Marine Corps veteran Ed Rapisarda, who invited everyone to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem, sung by Vacaville resident and musician Taryn Cross. Vietnam War veteran Harry Beck was there with his two grandsons. Beck served “in country” from 1966 to 1972, and like so many others, is still coming to grips with that war and its affect on him. FAIRFIELD — Community members welcomed the return of the annual Veterans Day Parade – after a year’s hiatus because of the Covid-19 pandemic – by lining the streets downtown Thursday. Ted Davidson came out with the family for the parade. His wife Barbara, daughter Wendy Hamilton and Ted Davidson Jr. have been attending the parade for six years and were disappointed last year’s parade was canceled.

“We have come to the parade every year,” Ted Davidson said. “They used to have a parade all the time where we used to live over in Lake County. It is good to see it again.” “Having a parade really makes this feel like home,” Barbara Davidson said. “But this is also about pride in our military.” Kalie Cambra, event coordinator for the Fairfield Parks and Recre-

Mare Island commemoration promises no ‘second death’ for US veterans VALLEJO — George Levine, like so many veterans, did not speak about his time in the service until late in his life. Levine’s family had escaped Europe just before the start of World War II, and as a young man in America, he joined the U.S. Navy to fight for his new country. He served on the USS Langley, a converted coal carrier that became the United States’ first aircraft

ation Department, said this year was a little different than past years, mainly because there were no community activities scheduled after the parade. But the parade itself drew solid participation. “We have 50 entrants for the parade this year from clubs to veterans organizations,” she said. The parade went from Kentucky Street, up to Great Jones Street and then along Texas Street before stopping at the old City Hall building. Starbucks provided free coffee

An hour-long concert by the Alive Music Orchestra started at 10 a.m. “It is wonderful to be back normal and able to celebrate again,” said veteran Edna Barnes, a past commander of Reams Post 182. “We have a long ways to go but we are getting there.” Barnes served during the See Concert, Page A8
