FAIRFIELD — Solano County is doing its fair share to reach the projected 3.7 million centenarians living across the globe in 2050. The Solano County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday recognized 43 who have made it to the century mark. The 15th annual event, held virtually for the second consecutive year due to Covid-19 concerns, featured a slide show of the honorees, two of them who have celebrated their 106th birthdays: Hazel Booher of Fairfield and Dorothy Pennycott of Vacaville. Booher made note at the October event in 2015 that she wasn’t hitting the century mark until Nov. 3. (Anyone celebrating their 100th birthday within the calendar year is eligible for
the commemoration.) The Minnesota native was a military wife who had two children and played the organ at her church. “You did this last year,” Pennycott told Supervisor John Vasquez in 2018. “I want to come next year if I can,” she said. “I hope you are here next year,” she told Vasquez. Both have been part of the annual event ever since. Pennycott shook the hand of Charles Lindbergh once. She plays Bingo weekly at the McBride Senior Center in Vacaville. Jennalee Dawson oversaw the event. She makes an annual appeal for Solano County centenarians and finds many in local residential facilities with which she works. Frances McCullough has lived
FAIRFIELD — Solano County Supervisor Jim Spering called the new state law mandating recycling organic waste “heavy-handed,” but facing state fines if out of compliance, joined the other board members in Tuesday introducing the ordinance. That fine could be as much as spering $10,000 a day if the county does not have the law on its books by the start of the new year. Mitch Supervisor Mashburn also expressed his concerns about “the unfunded state mandate,” and how the costs of implementing the law will force restaurants and grocery stores to

Pfizer’s Covid vaccine for younger kids wins FDA panel’s backing The benefits of a Covid-19 vaccine for young children made by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE exceed its risks, according to a panel of U.S. experts, putting a shot for the
youngest school-age children on track for a likely clearance. The Food and Drug Ad m i n ist rat ion’s vaccines advisory committee voted 17-0, with one abstention, to back the immunization, which is intended for children
from 5 to 11 years old and is one-third the dose currently given to people age 12 and older. Making a vaccine available to children in elementary school would mark a major milestone in the pandemic. Though kids generally don’t get
as sick from Covid-19 as adults, schools have been at the center of public debate over U.S. virus policy, and providing children with a shield against infection is likely to be welcomed by

FAIRFIELD — Seven roads were closed and every city in Solano County experienced at least some level of flooding from Sunday’s storm, which dropped 6 inches of rain over a 24-hour period in some areas. Public Works crews were out Tuesday assessing possible damage to bridges and culverts, while other crews were looking at areas where possible landslides or

other erosion issues could be a concern, such as the burn scar area as well as Lynch Canyon park. A dogwood tree fell on top of a restroom at Lake Solano Park, which also lost an old oak tree that fell and blocked part of the campground area. There were other minor issues at some of the other county parks, the Board of Supervisors was told at its Tuesday meeting. Having a week or so See Flood, Page A10

pass their costs onto the consumers. Board Chairman John Vasquez said he was concerned that while the law targets larger businesses now, it is only a step away from smaller outlets, too. There were also concerns about vermin and other pests being attracted to the food waste. But Supervisor Erin Hannigan said she did not think the law will be that much of a burden, and County Administrator Birgitta Corsello said similar recycling programs exist across the country, including what she described as a “robust program” in Las Vegas. Bill 1383 Senate requires the county and
