VACAVILLE — It was eine grosse party (a big party) Saturday in downtown Vacaville as the 14th Annual Oktoberfest drew hundreds to partake in German culture and food. Several people got into the spirit by donning lederhosen and dirndls, traditional Bavarian garb. Bryan Eckert came all the way from Marin with his German wife to celebrate the season. He was bedecked in lederhosen and a smile, saying he appreciates German culture and even spent part of his youth in Munich. As for the clothing, he said it wasn’t entirely authentic: He bought it on Amazon. “It’s actually from China,” he

House budget panel advances Biden’s giant tax, spending bill Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — The House Budget Committee advanced a draft version of President Joe Biden’s signature tax and social spending measure, a milestone ahead of possible votes on the floor of the chamber next week. The economic package would raise $2.1 trillion in revenue through measures including tax increases on corporations, the wealthy and tobacco users.

Bands played all day, with the Gruber Family Band providing the most oopah oomph. No one seemed to notice that they were, at times, singing in Spanish. But there was an accordion, an Oktoberfest staple, so

no one complained. Krystal Hicks brought her family out for the day to partake in the festivities. “It’s great to get out and about, especially after Covid,” she said. Venders lined up along the sidewalks, selling everything from handmade soap to succulents. Nonprofits such as Court Appointed Special Advocates also set up booths. Amy Yarborough came from Budget Blinds to raise money for the Vacaville Storehouse, which assists people in need. She was smart and set up her “tip” jar for the nonprofit at the beer line.
