n this 20th anniversary Saturday of 9/11, with so many memories surfacing and heaviness of heart that all the years can’t seem to wash away, Manka’s Corner became an unlikely spot for a solemn yet uplifting event. For the first time, elements of the Suisun Fire Protection District, Cordelia Fire Protection District, Napa County Fire Department and Solano County Sheriff’s Office came together for a procession down Mankas Corner Road to The Suisun Valley Filling Station. Waiting for them were about 150 people. Some were elected officials but the majority were people out to pay tribute to those who gave lost lives so many years ago.

caved in on them. Ganci ordered his men to set up a different command post in a safer location, farther north of the buildings, and ordered Steven Mosiello, who served as Ganci’s aide, to acquire backup. However, Ganci himself returned to the buildings, coming to stand in front of 1 World Trade Center, where he was directing the rescue efforts with a multichannel radio when the building collapsed. “I want to thank him for what he did,” Vincent said. Mayor Lori Wilson said she clearly remembers the events of Sept. 11, 2001. She had been up only a few minutes and as she passed the television to get her children up, she saw something about New York on the news. She passed back again

he early morning sun was shining over those assembled early Saturday to remember a day that is etched in the minds of millions: Sept. 11, 2001. The small ceremony was attended at 7 a.m. by members of the Fairfield Police Department, Fire Department, city personnel and city officials before the workday began for many. “It has been 20 years to the day that changed the world,” Fire Chief Tony Velasquez said during the opening comments. “Our security measures changed, and how we travel has changed.” The goal of the morning was to honor those that were killed two decades ago. Nearly 3,000 people died – 246 in the four airplanes (plus 19 hijackers), 2,606 in the two towers and surrounding area of the World Trade Center, and 125 at the

he Fire Department once again honored the lives lost on 9/11 with a morning ceremony Saturday, the 20th anniversary of that fateful day. Fire Chief Justin Vincent spoke of bravery that is not forgotten. “They were heroes that made a difference,” he said. Vincent said he hoped his work emulates New York City Fire Chief Peter James Ganci Jr., who died that day after making sure people were out of the first tower to fall at the World Trade Center. Ganci and others were in the basement of the South Tower when it collapsed at 9:59 a.m., but they dug themselves out of the rubble that had

hough it wasn’t strictly about the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, those atrocities were noted by most if not all the speakers Saturday at the Hour of Prayer event on the steps of the Solano County Courthouse downtown.
The event, organized by Shauntel Jacob, project manager for Faith PAC, was the third the group has held since forming earlier this year, Jacob said. “The mission of Faith PAC is to enhance the quality of life in the city of Fairfield through advocacy for peace and justice, community outreach, partnering with community
