TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Personnel and aircraft from Travis Air Force Base are supporting ongoing evacuations in Afghanistan, base officials confirmed Tuesday. The base’s KC-10 Extender aircraft are providing aerial refueling and assisting in passenger movement missions in the region, base officials report in a press release. Assigned C-17 Globemaster IIIs are providing their strategic and tactical airlift capabilities to support the evacuation efforts. C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft based at Travis have supported the operations by delivering equipment for crews of KC-10 Extender aircraft to execute their mission sets, as well as transporting additional personnel to the region, base

Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden appeared unwilling to bend to pressure, including from European allies, to extend a massive evacuation effort from Afghanistan, planning – for now – to stick to his Aug. 31 deadline for troop withdrawal. “We are currently on a pace to finish by Aug. 31. The sooner we can finish the better,” Biden said when he entered the RoosSee Biden, Page A9

officials report. Travis personnel are trained for this mission and are proceeding with professionalism, agility and speed, base officials report. “Our Team Travis personnel deployed in support of this mission are trained professionals who understand the complexity, urgency and importance of their mission,” Col. Corey A. Simmons, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, said in the press release. “From our support teams to our aircrews, our nation can trust these multi-capable mobility airmen . . . trained for these moments to deliver hope and save lives.” Simmons in a post last week on his commander’s Facebook page made note of the fact that the flight line at the base was nearly empty as crews left See Travis, Page A9

FAIRFIELD — Solano County Supervisor Erin Hannigan on Tuesday said Covid-19, and specifically the delta variant, is killing county residents and putting a burden on area hospitals. Hannigan called for the Board of Supervisors to require vaccinations for all county employees and vendors with the county. “I think we have to stop playing around and get serious,” Hannigan told the other board members during an off-topic discussion on providing additional resources to the Area Agency on Aging to combat Covid-related issues among the elderly. The point was brought home on a very personal level by board Chairman John Vasquez, who said that his wife’s uncle was that very day scheduled to be taken off a ventilator and was expected to die. He has been in the intensive care unit of a local hospital for three weeks. The latest coronavirus surge, which started shortly after July 4, has claimed eight lives locally – two of whom had been vaccinated. Those individuals have generally been older and have

had significant underlying health issues as well. Supervisor Jim Spering said unless he receives additional information, he would not support a countywide vaccine mandate. He was among four board members who were wearing masks during the meeting. As he conducts the meeting, a mask would impair Vasquez more than the others, who generally pulled down or removed the mask when speaking. Supervisor Monica Brown also made an impassioned plea during the board member comment period for people to send cards or show other levels of support for hospital workers, who she said are “exhausted” from the surging hospital numbers created by the pandemic. As of Monday, there were 143 residents hospitalized, 38 of whom are in area ICUs. Huddleston, Steve vice president of public affairs at NorthBay Healthcare, said the hospital’s beds, in and out of the ICU, are full, largely due to Covid-19. “Since the first of August, the hospitals have been full,” Huddleston said, referring See Vaccine, Page A9

Supes to discuss oversight panel for Sheriff’s Office Todd R. Hansen

FAIRFIELD — Solano County supervisors will at least be scheduled to discuss at a future meeting the possibility of creating a civilian oversight commission for the Sheriff’s Office. No specific date was set. During the board members’ comment period Tuesday, Supervisor Monica Brown renewed her call for the commission, which previously had not received any support from other supervisors. This time, Supervisor Erin Hannigan joined Brown, forcing the matter to be placed on a future agenda. The action comes about a week after the county

and the Sheriff’s Office were sued for alleged civil rights violations by a Sacramento-area woman who claims in the court document that she was knocked unconscious by brown two deputies. However, the call for a commission dates back at least six months, precipitated over concerns about what advocates of the commission said is a far-right, anti-government presence within the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office.
