Wildfire smoke tips Solano air quality into unhealthy range Glen Faison

FAIRFIELD — Smoke from various Northern California wildfires tipped the air quality scale into the unhealthy range Thursday with expectations for unhealthy air quality again Friday. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued an air quality warning – called a Spare the Air alert – Thursday and will keep it in place Friday as smoke
that had been drifting overhead for more than a week made its way to ground level across the region. It is illegal for Bay Area residents and businesses to use their fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits or any other wood-burning devices when air pollution warnings such as this are in force. “Multiple wildfires burning on the West Coast are expected to cause unhealthy air quality
throughout the region,” Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Bay Area air district, said in a press release Thursday. “As respiratory health is top of mind for all of us during the pandemic, it’s crucial that residents take steps to avoid exposure to unhealthy air.” The fires sending smoke into the Bay Area include those in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, which have generated a

Fire Engineer Tony Tynes accepts his award as Firefighter of the Year during the Fairfield Fire Department’s annual employee recognition and badge pinning ceremony in Fairfield, Thursday. SUNDAY
Parade coming this weekend. Look for the insert in the Daily Republic.
FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Fire Department normally holds its Employee Recognition and Badge Pinning Ceremony in February, not in the heart of August fire season. But with the backdrop of smoky skies outside, the department honored its own Thursday indoors at the Downtown Theatre. It was a look back to what was an extraordinary 2020 that featured
a global pandemic, civil unrest and a record-breaking California wildfire season that included the monstrous LNU Lightning Complex Fire. “We usually do it in February, but we’ve been a little busy,” Fire Chief Tony Velasquez said. “But we’re also busy right now, as you can see by looking outside. But it’s an exciting time. We are happy to see everyone here and to honor all the hard work that they have all put it.”

A couple of award winners missed Thursday night’s ceremony because they were on duty locally or out assisting the fight against Northern California wildfires. Velasquez said earlier that while balancing the evolving challenges of 2020, the men and women of the department responded to nearly 14,000 calls for service. He also noted that as a point of comparison, the call
