FAIRFIELD — Supervisor Erin Hannigan requested that the board be updated on the Covid-19 situation, and specifically why Solano is the only county in the region that is not mandating wearing masks in public indoor places. She said she had received a number of comments from the public on the topic and hopes Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, can explain the local policy. Matyas, in a phone interview, said the answer is simple: The science does not

support such a policy. He noted, first of all, it is already a state mandate that unvaccinated individuals wear masks in such places, though enforcement is mostly on the honor system and not some kind of specific verification. More directly to the science, Matyas said, the

sources of transmission in Solano County are private social gatherings and not public settings. “All this is predicated on the belief that all these indoor places are where transmission takes place,” Matyas said. “They are not the same risk of transmission, not even remotely as close.” Nancy O’Brien could not disagree more. VALLEJO — The Solano County Fair Board voted 4-1 Monday to stop hosting gun shows at the county fairgrounds. Director Lee Williams dissented. The prohibition will begin when the contract the fairgrounds has with show promoter Code of the West expires at the end of the year. There are still shows scheduled for October and December. There was a general consensus among those voting for the ban that while gun shows are probably not a direct cause for the escalating gun violence in Vallejo and around the country, they felt compelled to do something. “There is an opportunity for us to do the right thing,” said board Chairman Manuel Angel, who initially abstained but then changed his mind and joined the majority. Angel noted that he is a hunter but is sensi-

Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — The Senate on Tuesday approved an expansive bill to rebuild the nation’s aging roads and bridges, with $8.3 billion specifically targeted to water infrastructure projects in the West and billions more to fund national projects to mitigate the impact of wildfires. After months of negotiation between President Joe Biden, Democrats and a group of mod-

erate Republicans to forge a compromise, the Senate voted 69-30 in favor of the legislation. In the end, it had support from 19 Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. The plan, which is the first portion of Biden’s “Build Back Better” program, will next go to the House, where it faces challenges from progressives. Ten centrist senators See Senate, Page A8

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that he will resign from office in the face of escalating political pressure over allegations that he sexually harassed nearly a dozen women, marking a stunning downfall for CUOMO one of the most prominent Democrats in the country. In a livestreamed speech from his Manhattan office, the 63-year-old governor acknowledged for the first time that he “deeply offended” all of

his 11 accusers. He said the only move for him is to step aside and let New York regain its focus on pandemic recovery and other pressing matters. “Wasting energy on distractions is the last thing that state government should be doing. I cannot be the cause of that,” Cuomo said, adding that his “love” for New York motivated his decision to resign. “The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to See Cuomo, Page A8

tive to the fact Vallejo has had a recent history with gun violence. Director Norma Placido acknowledged the benefits of the shows, economically and culturally. But she has reservations, too. “It’s a big difference than it was 20 years ago,” Placido said. “My concern is, if possible, we have to make sure that we will not continue to host gun shows,” she said. “For me, because there (are) so many (violent) crimes in Vallejo.” Director Kari Birdseye also expressed reservations about stopping the shows , but cited comments by Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, who is on record as saying the state should not be in the gun and ammunition business. Director Valerie Williams said she “has mixed feelings about whether we should be hosting gun shows,” but
