State’s health care workers must be vaccinated by end of September Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES — In what officials characterized as the first requirement of its kind in the nation, California ordered Thursday that health care workers statewide must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 come early fall. The new mandate applies to employees in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, clinics, doctor’s offices, hospice facilities, dialysis centers and most other health care settings, and stipulates that they complete their inoculation regimen by Sept. 30. “As we continue to see an increase in cases and hospitalizations due to the delta variant of Covid-19, it’s important that we protect the vulnerable patients in these settings,” Dr. Tomás Aragón, state public health officer and director of the California Department of Public Health, said in a statement. “Today’s action will also ensure that health care workers themselves are protected. Vaccines are how
we end this pandemic.” The state also ordered that hospitals, skilled nursing centers and intermediate care facilities must verify that visitors indoors are either fully vaccinated or have tested negative for the coronavirus within 72 hours of their arrival. It was just last week that Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that California health care employees would soon either have to show proof of their vaccination status or be subjected to regular testing. Thursday’s order largely removes the testing option and allows only limited religious or medical exemptions from the vaccine requirement. Employees who are exempted would have to be tested regularly – twice a week if they work in acute or long-term care facilities and once a week in other health care settings. Unvaccinated employees would also have to wear a surgical mask or respirator, such as an N95, while inside a facility.

FAIRFIELD — The new academy graduates of the Fairfield Fire Department immediately put their training to the test before family and friends, climbing right into the training tower on Union Avenue and working a simulated structure fire. Fire Chief Tony Velasquez said it was the first time the ceremony had taken place at the training tower. The scene was festive with chairs encircled by fire trucks and American flags and the tower smoking in anticipation of the simulation. All six went right to work with full gear on and simulated an entrance into a multiple-story blaze. Minutes later they dusted
off the smoke, took off the gear and got prepared for the milestone moment. “This is a very exciting moment for us,” Velasquez said. “It’s our first graduation at the fire tower. It was a really cool moment and we’re happy to be here.” Nick Morgado, Chris Engell, Logan Lanza, Brandon Mihelich, Meghan Reid and Bryan Rose, the Class of 21-1, were sworn in and had their badges pinned by girlfriends, wives, children, brothers, fathers and sisters. Engell had the special opportunity to be pinned by his father, Randy Engell, a retired Fairfield firefighter. Training Chief Nick Eisan presented the class to the audience after conducting his first
