JAN. 6 HEARING
Officer: ‘I could have lost my life that day . . . many times’ Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — Four Capitol and Metropolitan Police Department officers on Tuesday recounted their experience fighting off the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol during the first hearing of a new House committee investigating the attack. “I recall thinking to myself, this is how I’m going to die, defending this entrance,” Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell said. “I could have lost my life that day, not once, but many times.”
Dressed in uniforms, the officers struggled at times to deliver the emotional testimony and graphic descriptions. At one point during a video presentation, Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone placed his hand on Gonell’s shoulder and whispered in his ear. Others dabbed their eyes with tissues, cleared their throats repeatedly and paused to drink water throughout their testimony. Gonell said he was more scared on

CDC urges using masks indoors, including schools Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Tuesday that some people vaccinated against Covid-19 resume wearing face masks indoors as new data indicates fully vaccinated individuals can spread the dangerous delta variant. The rising threat of infection led the agency to say that individuals in areas of “high” or “substantial” transmission of Covid-19 should wear masks indoors, whether or not they are vaccinated. All students, staff and visitors to K-12 schools should wear a mask when students

FAIRFIELD — Various pollination services in 2020 cracked the top 10 most valuable agricultural commodities for the first time in Solano County. Pollination had a gross production value of nearly $5.11 million, a 59% increase over 2019, Ed King, the county agriculture commissioner, reported Tuesday to the Board of Supervisors. Overall, however, the 2020 Crop and Livestock Report showed a total agriculture value of $357.16 million, nearly $15 million less than the prior year and the lowest in three years. This was the 71st annual report, dating back to 1949. The 4.02% decrease was blamed on the LNU Lightning Complex Fire, drought and the Covid-19 pandemic, which King said devastated processing plants, restaurants, stores and other related outlets the farmers and ranchers depend on each year.
