LOS ANGELES — California’s largest wildfire so far this year merged with another, smaller fire overnight, swelling to 190,625 acres by Sunday as it burned through some area neighborhoods. Authorities on Sunday issued new evacuation orders as the massive Dixie Fire in Butte County, north of Sacramento, continued to spread rapidly to the north and east, and burned together with the nearby Fly Fire, which had previously scorched about 4,300 acres. “Right now, with the

weather getting hotter and drier, the fire is moving faster,” Luis Jimenez, public information officer on the fire, said Sunday afternoon. The incident meteorologist warned firefighters that unstable atmospheric conditions could help the fire generate a pyrocumulonimbus cloud capable of creating its own lightning, he said. “The whole thing is basically picking up and going, and we’re trying to get that box, trying to corral the fire,” Jimenez said. “It’s been like that since day one.” Already, the fire had destroyed at least See Wildfires, Page A7

SUISUN CITY — Majs. Bob and Joanne Louangamath arrived at the Kroc Center a few weeks ago via Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Santa Fe Springs, Santa Maria and San Jose. Bob Louangamath had his first officer appointment 26 years ago in Stockton. Just getting to America was a challenge. Born in Laos, he was half Thai. He fled the country in 1979 when

he was 5. Gunshots were fired at them from the riverbanks. “My grandpa shot back and they stopped,” he said. Bob Louangamath’s job was to scoop water out of the canoe, which had holes in it. “I did the best I could,” he said. When they neared the shore, a hand chain helped pull the family to safety. They settled in a refugee camp, waiting for sponsorship. “We came to San Francisco on a 747,” he recalled. “I felt like it was part of heaven.” The family then settled in Santa

Rosa and were introduced to The Salvation Army. Bob Louangamath went camping, learned tae kwon do and the trumpet through The Salvation Army. “Coming from a Third World country, I wanted to help,” he said of enlisting. The fact the organization also put into practice what they preached was key, he said. He was 19 when he signed up. “I was the baby of the session,” he said. See Majors, Page A7

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Republican Rep. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. is moving in the “wrong direction” in combating a new wave of Covid-19, and a booster vaccine shot may be needed especially for the most vulnerable, said Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert. With half of the country still not fully vaccinated, and with a new spread fueled by the highly contagious delta variant, the U.S. faces a worst-case scenario of daily deaths reaching 4,000, the same level as See Fauci, Page A7
