Recovery Ride celebrates grand re-opening of Unity Hall Susan Hiland

FAIRFIELD — The 75-mile motorcycle ride through Solano County on Saturday was a celebration of the newly renovated Unity Hall, which was closed through last year because of the pandemic. The ride took about 15 riders through Winters and around Lake Berryessa. Deanna Allan, program director at Unity Hall, welcomed everyone back in the afternoon for a barbecue and fundraising prize drawing. “It has been difficult because we have not been able to get together and we lost folks to overdoses

and suicide, and we didn’t get to grieve,” she said. The hall was closed but that didn’t mean that the work stopped. The multiple recovery meetings went virtual, which was a boon for some because they couldn’t physically get to meetings. “Some people with mobility problems were able to join the meetings who otherwise wouldn’t have,” Allan said. It had been a long time since Unity Hall had any improvements so with the doors closed she decided to do some renovating. “I want it to feel like a cafe,” she said. The feedback is that See Unity, Page A12

About 15 riders went for a 75-mile motorcycle ride through Solano County, Saturday, as part of the grand re-opening of Unity Hall, which hosts meetings for those in recovery. It has been a year since everyone got together in the hall. A barbecue and prize drawing took place after the ride.

Experts urge CDC to revise mask guidance Tribune Content Agency

Visitors to Los Angeles’ Chinatown wear masks outdoors after L.A. County began requiring them to be worn in public indoors.

A growing number of public-health experts are urging the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to recommend that even fully vaccinated people wear face masks in public amid the resurgence of virus cases fed by the delta variant. Doctors including former surgeon general Jerome Adams say the CDC acted prematurely in May when it announced that fully inoculated Americans See Experts, Page A12

FAIRFIELD — Igal Koiman woke up July 15 to find a rock, perhaps 10 or 12 pounds, had been used to smash the windshield of his car. A note read, “Punk Bitch.” He later learned that three of his neighbors – each with a family member who is of Asian descent – also had their windshields smashed with a similar kind of stone. Koiman said he is the only one to contact the Fairfield Police Department. “They said they don’t trust the police,” Koiman said of his neighbors’ response to his urging them to contact the department. The Police Department also encourages those individuals or anyone else in the neighborhood who may have information to contact the department.

‘The reign of terror started about 10 minutes after I called the police. Phone harassment, text harassment.’ — Igal Koiman

Police officials said they work with residents of that area and were surprised to learn of the stated lack of trust. But even Koiman, a former police officer in Tel Aviv, after more than two months of what he described as an inadequate response to what he calls a “reign of terror” has also lost nearly all his faith in the department, too.

Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen, the public information officer for the department, said the department is aware of the neighborhood dispute, but said without more concrete evidence, there is little the department can do. He said a patrolman was initially assigned to the case, and now two detectives are involved. And while the department has contacted the individual Koiman believes is involved, that person denies any involvement. “My wife is terrified,” Koiman said. “She is afraid to go outside.” Koiman and his wife, Jossie, are concerned that the harassment will escalate. “And it did,” Koiman said, referring to the smashed windshield. It is possible, however, that the windshield incidents are separate from the so-called harassment
