SUISUN CITY — The Fire Department is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year. That’s quite a feat since the city is 150 years old. “The Fire Department predates the city,” Fire Chief Justin Vincent said at a recent City Council meeting. It was launched by the Union Army. The department secured a hand-pulled cart from San Francisco in August 1861. The story, Vincent said, is that it was too much for the steep hills and had rolled downhill, killing a firefighter. The department still has that piece of equipment. A fire devastated much of downtown Suisun City in 1869. An eight-square block area was lost to fire in 1988.

Ready to rocket, Bezos aims to open up space tourism Tribune Content Agency SEATTLE — When Kent, Washington-based Blue Origin on Tuesday rockets Jeff Bezos upward on its first mission carrying humans into space, the wealthiest man on the planet will be blazing the trail of a newly hot recreation for the very rich: space tourism. Bezos, creator of Amazon, founder and bankroller of Blue Origin, follows on the
tail of the heavily marketed trip to space just days earlier by fellow billionaire Richard Branson in a Virgin Galactic spaceplane. On Blue Origin’s rockets, tickets for its 11-minute thrill ride are initially expected to cost in excess of $300,000 per seat.
