FAIRFIELD — Adriana Gabriel, 34, of Suisun City was wearing her red, white and blue Mickey Mouse ears, and her son, Liam, 3, was also decked out in patriotic colors and riding in a red wagon Sunday for the annual 4th of July Parade, which ran through downtown Fairfield.

“We make it every year,” she said.

Gabriel was cheering in the car on the way to the parade because the Independence Day parade and

festivities were something that she missed in 2020.

“The sense of normalcy is very nice,” she said. “Without the celebration last year it just didn’t feel the same.”

Her husband, Jeff Gabriel, agreed.

They were looking forward to a barbecue with tacos, watermelon and cupcakes.

FAIRFIELD — The U.S. Coast Guard reported 767 boating fatalities nationwide in 2020, a 25.1% increase from 2019.

“There is evidence that boating activity increased significantly during the (Covid-19) pandemic, from reports of increased

boat sales, insurance policies taken out, insurance claims and calls for towing assistance. With the increased exposure . . . there was greater risk of deaths, injuries and accidents,” the Coast Guard reported in a statement released with the 2020 Recreational Boating Statistics Report.

burst into my room and said, “Who are these people that can’t stand Lucy? I thought everybody loved Lucy!”

One song she did like though was “Start Me Up” by The Rolling Stones. It’s often used

by NFL games right before the kickoff. I loved to hear her singing along to it. So yes, The Rolling Stones remind me of my mom.

The game Scattergories is where you have about a minute to write down unique answers to different categories all beginning with the same letter.

Once we played and one of the categories was, “Stones/Gems” and the letter was W. I wrote down "Watts" for Charlie Watts, the Stones’ drummer. They all denied me that one point and I'm still bitter over it.

2. A vintage Whitesnake t-shirt. My sister-in-law, Co, over the years has shipped me all kinds of awesome gifts including a Bob Ross sticker book and this electronic game called Scrabble Flash that I

love. Not too long ago she sent me a vintage 1987 Whitesnake T-shirt with lead singer David Coverdale on the front. Now there is no way she could have known that that old rock shirt would remind me of my mom, but it did. Their huge hit, “Here I Go Again,” was another tune that I liked back in the day that my mom did as well. So when Tawny Kitaen, who had been married to Coverdale and famously danced on top of cars in the “Here I Go Again" video,” died recently, it (kind of awkwardly) reminded me of my mom.

Now, if I was in the In-Shape steam room listening to Whitesnake on my headphones, I could get a family remembrance twofer. I could pull off the hat trick if I could somehow use my 8-track player in there.

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County Library is offering a free, four-week course in July for teenagers on how to play the ukulele.

Lorenza Gibson, of Vallejo, will instruct all skill levels, including those with no previous musical experience. Those who attend are asked to complete the full course schedule. It begins from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday and continues July 17, July 24 and July 31.

U kuleles (either soprano or tenor models) can be borrowed from local library branches.

Each teen who registers will receive their own ukulele to keep.

Fat Babes Club of Columbus hosts pool parties, yoga classes for people with marginalized bodies

Tribune Content Agency COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Lana Moy would go to the Westerville Jaycee Community Pool in Westerville, Ohio, growing up, she’d typically wear shorts and a t-shirt over her bathing suit – even when she went in the water.

“The only time I’d strip down to my bathing suit was at (swim team) meets when I had to,” said the now 40-year-old South Side resident.

That’s just one of the many reasons she was in awe of the scene that played out at her childhood pool Saturday night for the Fat Babes Club of Columbus pool party.

It, frankly, was priceless for her and the other 210 attendees.

“This is amazing,” she said from the water in a leopard and black bikini.

“The idea that I have my belly out and everyone is comfortable – to have this community where you feel as sexy and wonderful as everyone else is worth whatever money.”

I nvest ment was minimal, though, as tickets cost only $15 and the price of admission paid for more than just a fun evening at the pool.

The party, which was the third such aquatic event hosted by the group founded in 2019, provided people of all genders, sexualities and abilities who often feel judged by their size a chance to be themselves and feel beautiful and let it all hang and to show some skin.

Aidy Bryant show ‘Shrill’ inspires Fat Babes Club The club and these events were initially inspired by an episode of the Hulu series “Shrill,” which chronicles the daily life of a young woman (played by Aidy Bryant) who wants to change her life but not her body.

In the show, the main character attends a “fat babe pool party.”

“You can physically feel the anxiety and see the stress on Aidy Bryant’s face,” said Elizabeth Chinn, one of the founders of Fat Babes Club of Columbus. “When she takes off her jeans, there is this moment of relief, of safety and then, she’s swimming in the water.

“You see that at our pool parties.”

Chinn, a social worker, said she and three other local bloggers and Instagram influencers who advocate for those in the

A pool party seemed like a logical kickoff event.

“For people of size, summer is usually a triggering time,” said Chinn, of the Near East Side. “Our bodies are more on display. Verbal harassment, physical harassment can be more present in the summer.”

Tickets for Fat Babes’ pool party sell out in minutes While the pool parties are very popular – tickets for Saturday’s event sold out in less than 10 minutes – Fat Babes has also offered yoga classes, roller skating meet ups, variety shows and karaoke outings.

Basically, the organizers try to offer anything they’ve felt uncomfortable doing because of their size.

The events are always a blast, the founders said, but the group is more about creating a community – online and in the real world – where people feel safe being their true selves and getting the resources they need to live their best lives.

Hannah Godown, one of the other founders, said she used to be the only “fat friend” in her social circle and didn’t have many friends who shared her same experiences.

“This is a whole new level of loving and accepting my body,” said Godown, a 29-year-old who lives near Clintonville. “Going shopping with Elizabeth is so much more fun than going somewhere where I can’t fit into clothes and I have to buy jewelry or a purse.”

As founders, which also include Jeannette Burchfield and Krystal Orr, they’ve received questions about what types of bras work better for bigger sizes and where to find love. One of the most asked questions, however, is much more serious, they said.

Where can I find a doctor who won’t make fun of my size?

“It’s life-saving,” Chinn said. “If they feel more comfortable going to that doctor, they’re going to go to them for care.”

She continued that the Fat Babes Club is about creating a community where joy, visibility and access aren’t radical concepts for people with marginalized bodies.

The joy was certainly palpable Saturday night poolside in Westerville.

Courtnee Fuehrer, 25, of the King-Lincoln neighborhood, couldn’t stop smiling after going down the tall, winding waterslide.

Fuehrer said she has enjoyed following the Fat Babes Instagram account as it represents body types like hers that aren’t typically celebrated on social media. She attended the event with friend Holly Ciampa.

“It’s so refreshing to have something so pointedly supportive of fat people,” said Ciampa, 28, of Westerville. “That never happens. Any person who has ever been fat knows how intimidating swimming and swimwear are. To have a space where we can just be – there are just good vibes here and that’s hard to find when you’re fat.”

Babes did cannonballs, tried to help each other onto the numerous floaties – shaped like unicorns, dragons, donuts and roller

skates – and giggled. They toasted with hard seltzers and danced to a dee jay playing upbeat music.

“Everybody looks so happy,” Ciampa said surveying the scene.

Longtime best friends Erin Nguyen and Ann Smith donned coordinating swim suits that represented Ariel and Ursula from “The Little Mermaid.”

Nguyen, 35, of Westerville, said the evening gave her the opportunity to reclaim her childhood a bit where no one judges, asks questions about attire or talks about being fat.

Smith, 34, drove all the way from Cleveland to share in the experience with Nguyen and she said she now feels less alone in her body.

“I might not talk to everyone here, but we probably all have shared experiences,” Smith said.

Linden residents Erin Katalinic and her wife Jenn appreciated the comfortable environment they experienced Saturday.

Erin Katalinic was especially excited to wear the rainbow striped one-piece with a plunging neckline she’d bought before the pandemic.

And she was more than thrilled to not have to justify the bathing suit choice to onlookers nor hear that she’s brave for wearing it with her body type.

“People here just say, ‘Your bathing suit looks great,’” she said.

“I like that they put ‘fat’ first,” Erin Katalinic said. “Everyone should love their bodies, but fat people need to love their fat bodies.”

Pearl Jam fronting Funko’s new band collection of Pops!

Tribune Content Agency Funko, the Everett, Wash.-based company that produces pop-culture collectibles, is welcoming the start of summer (and music festival season) with a lineup of musicthemed figures inspired by legendary artists.

With Thursday’s launch of Popapalooza, Funko‘s own musicthemed line, the company featured an homage to Seattle’s very own Pearl Jam. Fans have been asking for Pearl Jam Pops! – Funko’s best-known line of vinyl figurines – for a long time, said Billy Brisebois, Funko’s director of retail marketing.

“Being a Seattle-area company, Pearl Jam is a special line for Funko. It

doesn’t hurt that they are also one of the greatest rock bands of all time.”

The Pearl Jam 5-Pack features Pop! figures of Mike McCready (guitar), Jeff Ament (bass), Eddie Vedder (vocals/ guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Stone Gossard (guitar).

In addition to Pearl Jam, Popapalooza features such bands as BTS and TLC and artists like DJ Khaled.

The decision to feature a wide range of music genres in the Popapalooza lineup stems from Funko’s motto, “Everyone is a fan of something,” said Lauren Winarski, Funko’s director of licensing and brand strategy. “Where else do you see TLC promoted alongside Elvis Presley?”

his is an apt topic for the Independence Day holiday – whether the U.S. Supreme Court struck a blow for privacy and free speech last week or undermined California’s justifiable effort to require a controversial (and conservative) political organization to reveal its donors.

After numerous battles in lower courts, the Supreme Court, by a 6-3 margin that reflected its ideological division, sided with Americans for Prosperity, a nonprofit organization founded by industrialists David and Charles Koch, and other nonprofit organizations.

Federal law requires such organizations to file income tax returns and list their Dan Walters major donors, but California law requires only that they provide copies of their tax returns to the state Department of Justice, which oversees charitable groups.

However, beginning with former Attorney General (and now Vice President) Kamala Harris, the California Department of Justice began demanding that organizations also disclose their donors. Americans for Prosperity sued, alleging that the demanded filings violated their donors’ constitutional rights and, if disclosed publicly, would subject them to harassment.

Advocates of the disclosure requirement countered that the information was needed to combat fraud and the flow of so-called “dark money” into political campaigns, particularly after the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. The state insisted that the information would remain confidential, but there has been in fact, a couple of incidents in which it was disclosed.

Americans for Prosperity tended to win in lower federal courts but lose in the 9th District Court of Appeal, which has a reputation for liberal leanings. Finally, the case reached the Supreme Court, where conservatives hold sway by a 6-3 margin, and that’s how the court divided on the case in last Thursday’s decision.

The majority opinion, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, declared that California’s regulation violated donors’ First Amendment rights and did not serve a narrowly tailored government interest.

“The upshot,” Roberts wrote, “is that California casts a dragnet for sensitive donor information from tens of thousands of charities each year, even though that information will become relevant in only a small number of cases involving filed complaints.”

The court’s three liberal justices saw otherwise, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor writing their dissent and alleging that the decision would allow more anonymously donated money to influence campaigns and poses a “significant risk that it will topple disclosure regimes that should be constitutional.”

It’s the latest skirmish in an old debate over whether regulating political activity with campaign contribution and spending limits, bans on certain kinds of political spending, disclosure laws and other rules is needed to prevent corruption or whether it violates constitutional rights of free speech.

The regulations at all levels of government are written and imposed by politicians, who have vested interests in how they affect political campaigns. In the Americans for Prosperity case, three Democratic attorneys general – Harris, Xavier Becerra and now Rob Bonta – sought the information other Democrats clearly and publicly hoped would curb the influence of the libertarian Koch brothers.

Through Americans for Prosperity and their other organizations, the Kochs have been fairly successful, especially at the state level (although not in California) in electing Republican legislators and thereby influencing the decennial redrawing of congressional districts to help the GOP gain and retain seats.

Democratic politicians and their allies, especially labor unions, obviously dislike that the Kochs have been successful. However, in pursuing the names of major donors to nonprofit organizations, California’s attorneys general also have imposed burdens on purely charitable groups that could damage their ability to attract donors, and there’s virtually no evidence that the requirement has actually played a material role in rooting out fraud.

Joe Biden was an elected member of Congress for 36 years under the old Civil Service Retirement System, plus eight years as vice president under FERS, therefore, his pension is calculated at a much more generous rate. So, his total service under CSRS and FERS is approximately 44 years.

His pension for this service is approximately $248,670.

Since Biden was elected president, his pension, when taken, from that office will be an additional $221,400 per annum, which could increase pending any further congressional action on this matter.

Both Vice President Pence and now President Biden spent time as our elected federal employees and qualify for health benefits under the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program. Oddly enough, Biden’s health insurance comes under CSRS, not the Affordable Care Act he championed as President Barack Obama’s Vice president.

Numbers specific to Solano County were not readily available.

Not all the deaths, however, were the result of boating accidents, Chief Warrant Officer M. Leo Zapawa noted in an email response to the Daily Republic.

Zapawa is the Search Mission coordinator and command duty officer in the vast sector, which is bordered by the Mendocino County line to the San Luis Obispo County line, 200 nautical miles out to sea, the inland San Francisco Bay to Sacramento and Stockton, Lake Tahoe, as well as much of Nevada, Utah and parts of Wyoming.

There are about 2,500 miles of shoreline within the San Francisco Bay and its tributaries.

California accounted for 493 of the national boating accidents, second to Florida were there were reports of 804 accidents, the Coast Guard reported.

Of California’s accidents, there were 39 deaths, 37 attributed to the accidents directly, and 311 who were injured.

The property damage amounted to $6.94 million.

Nationally, the damage total was $62.5 million.

“Operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed and machinery failure ranked as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents,” the Coast Guard reported.

“It’s crucial for boaters to wear a life jacket at all times because it very likely will save your life if you enter the water unexpectedly. The Coast Guard reminds boaters to make sure that life jackets are serviceable, properly sized and correctly fastened,” Capt.

Scott Johnson, chief of the Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety at Coast Guard headquarters, said in the statement.

Where the cause of death was known, 75% of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims, 86% were not wearing a life jacket.

The most common vessel types involved in reported accidents were open motorboats, personal watercraft and cabin motorboats.

Where vessel type was known, the vessel types with the highest percentage of deaths were open motorboats (50%), kayaks (15%) and pontoons (9%), the Coast Guard reported.

The report is based on incidents that resulted in at least one of the following criteria: death, disappearance, injury that required medical treatment beyond first aid, damages to the vessel or other property that equaled or exceeded $2,000, or a loss of vessel.

Remainder of condo to be demolished Sunday night or Monday morning The Washington Post Workers prepared what’s left of the Champlain Towers South building for a demolition that is slated for late Sunday evening or early Monday morning as search-and-rescue efforts remained paused and Tropical Storm Elsa drew closer to Florida.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said a crew is set to level the remainder of the building between the hours of 10 p.m. Sunday and 3 a.m. Monday. She has said the demolition is officials’ “top priority” so firefighters can resume their search for those lost in the rubble.

The demolition plan calls for using small, strategically placed detonations as part of a technique known as “energetic felling,” which also relies on the force of gravity to bring the building down. Levine Cava said the collapse would be confined to the immediate area, but she advised nearby residents to keep their windows closed during the demolition to avoid any dust.

“We pray for the limited impacts of the storm in Surfside, so that we can continue unimpeded,” the mayor said at a news conference.

Demolishing the structure was initially thought to be weeks away. But the approach of Tropical Storm Elsa added a

The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center shows Elsa veering toward Florida’s western coast, away from Miami-Dade County, but storm trackers warn that the area could feel rain and wind gusts from the system’s outer bands.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told CBS News’s “Face the Nation” that 80 percent of the preparation work for the demolition was complete.

He said the plan is to bring down the rest of Champlain Towers South in a westward direc-

tion, so the debris pile is not affected. This would allow rescuers to access a broader swath of the wreckage, where officials and relatives are still holding out hope that there might be survivors.

Search crews have only been able to access a fraction of the debris pile since a 15-hour pause on Thursday over concerns about the remaining tower’s stability.

“This demolition is going to open up a whole area, so we’ll be able to pour more resources onto the pile,” Burkett said.

“We are going to attack it big time.”

The Miami-Dade Police Department identified another person evening.

Sunday David Epstein, 58, was recovered Friday, the department tweeted. The

death toll stands at 24, with 121 people still unaccounted for.

For nearly 40 years, Champlain Towers South was a familiar sight on the Surfside waterfront.

Completed during Florida’s condominium boom in the 1980s, it offered a slice of oceanfront living at a comparatively more accessible price than the glitzy surrounding communities. It was also, in many ways, a microcosm of Miami’s unique diversity, a blend of families, many of whom had fled troubled homelands in search of prosperity.

Surfside resident Darrell Arnold lives in a house on Harding Avenue, about a block from the collapsed building, and said he and his wife were frequent visitors to the beach behind

the building, where they’d go to sunbathe and swim.

“In some ways, before the event, the building was just another building on the beach,” he said.

“Now it’s a site of trauma and tragedy, a sign of – I don’t know. I don’t even know what it is. Is it a sign of mismanagement, overoptimism, negligence? I don’t know.”

Arnold said seeing the wreckage is still hard to process. He hopes the site can be converted into a memorial, at least for some period of time.

“At one point, the word grotesque occurred to me, to build something there very quickly, like a forprofit building,” he said.

“At least there needs to be some time for that to be some kind of memorial.”

As the demolition neared, some expressed concern for any pets who might have been left behind as residents fled in panic after the collapse.

For days, firefighters have been trying to save animals in the building, including by using drones to survey the remaining units, but they have not found any signs of the missing animals. By late Sunday, more than 15,000 people had signed an online petition to halt the demolition until all the animals are rescued.

“We’ve been actively searching for days for any pets that remain in the building,” Levine Cava said. “We know these are family members.”

“We got the notification we could do the parade a little late,” she said. “The team rallied and came together to pull it off.”

Chamberlin said she was really excited to welcome the Budweiser Clydesdales for the first time in the parade, and a flyover of a B-17 by Travis Air Force Base was also a first.

“It is the first time in 14 years we had a flyover,” she said.

The theme of the parade was “Reigniting Community.”

This parade included some changes due to Covid-19.

“We don’t have any of the school marching bands and really no student groups,” Chamberlin said. “But the Boy Scouts have come out and volunteered.”

The parade had 45 entrants, which was similar to years past.

The parade was followed by games for children on the green lawn area next to the old courthouse at Jefferson and Texas streets.

There were sack races, food trucks and ice cream carts. They also had a best apple pie contest and hot dog eating contest.

Regina Chevalier of Fairfield entered the apple pie contest. She waited by the tent for the judges to begin tasting and making a judgment on the best apple pie.

“I have never done a contest before,” she said.

“But I’m not nervous because this is meant to be fun.”

Chevalier brought two pies in case of an “accident” and was happy to report nothing happened.

The city plans to host the annual Tomato and Vine Festival in August and the Veterans Day Parade in November and the Christmas Tree Lighting in December.

Chase Elliott adds second Cup Series win in 2021 Tribune Content Agency Chase Elliott’s car wasn’t quite where it needed to be ahead of NASCAR’s Cup race at Road America. Elliott said that the No. 9 team was “still searching” following Sunday’s qualifying session in which time ran out before Elliott could run his fastest lap.

But that didn’t matter by the end of the race when Elliott was sitting comfortably in the lead, nearly six seconds ahead

of second place finisher Christopher Bell and driving to his second win this season. Kyle Busch finished third.

“We’ve had a rough few weeks, so it feels really good,” Elliott said on NBC after a smoke-raising burnout he completed for fans on the front stretch.

The defending Cup champion and NASCAR’s most popular driver then thrilled fans with another burnout near Turn 5 of the 14-turn course near

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. He said he was surprised by the support since he’s only run a handful of lower-level races in the state.

“It’s exciting when we change the schedule up and go to new places,” Elliott said. “You bring energy and excitement that our series deserves to have.”

The Cup Series made a long-awaited return to the track on Sunday. The last race for NASCAR’s top drivers at Road

America was in 1956, but the sanctioning body laid out its 2021 schedule with the goal of mixing it up and spreading the wealth to different venues. Elliott’s victory clearly struck a chord with fans, but it wasn’t one he expected early in the race.

He started in the bottom 10, but was up to 10th place by the end of the first stage – a promising sign for the defending road course winner. In the final 20 laps, he was

leading and said he didn’t need any more adjustments, just tires and fuel.

Elliott pitted when a laterace caution came out, and even though he didn’t line up in the front row for the restart, his Chevy quickly got up to first place passing Aric Almirola and Busch.

The No. 9 then remained in the lead for the final 17 laps despite contact between Hendrick Motorsports teammates with five laps to go. Alex Bowman’s car

had a brake issue and he sent Kyle Larson for a spin, but fortunately for Elliott, Larson was able to get straightened out without NASCAR throwing a caution. Elliott took the checkered flag then catered to the Fourth of July crowd.

“If the fans want a burnout I’m gonna give them a burnout,” he said after wearing his tires down so badly that it required a NASCAR vehicle to push his car back.

One special onlooker seeing the contest for the first time in person was Princeton, New Jersey, resident Tabitha Bellamy, 45, who babysat Chestnut as a child.

“I’m absolutely amazed. I’m so proud,” said Bellamy, who said Chestnut was a “very, very rambunctious child.”

A hot-dog-hatted Mayor Bill de Blasio was also on hand to congratulate and share his insights: “It is a dog-eatdog world … we should relish this moment!”

“This was a great way to celebrate after being home,” she added. “I was just feeling the electricity and positivity from the crowd.”

“I don’t really have anything to compare it to, but I think it definitely will be a little bit more special because I grew up only 30 minutes down the road from Coors Field,” Gausman said, “It’s going to be pretty cool.”

Crawford made the team at the age of 34 and after a couple of down seasons, and, he said, “I think every All-Star Game is specialy but yeah, after a few kind of tough years to kind of turn it around last year and then being more com-

fortable with some of the changes that I made last year, bringing them into this year and having a good first half definitely makes it more special.”

Crawford is leading the Giants with 17 homers and 52 RBIs while continuing to play his regular Gold Glove-caliber defense. His totals going into Sunday’s game at Arizona were second only to Fernando Tatis’ 25 homers and 53 RBIs among NL shortstops, and he was an MLB selection to the roster.

FAIRFIELD — As if a five-run fourth innings wasn’t enough, Northwest Star Academy tacked on a six-run fifth as the Fairfield Expos American Legion baseball team concluded tournament play at Swede Johnson Field in Eugene, Oregon, with an 11-1 loss, Sunday.

After falling behind 5-0, the Expos, 36-13 overall and 7-8 on their 16-day, five-state road trip, scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Grant Kerr drew his second walk of the game and was doubled home by Aaron Strong.

A

stroll through a farmers market during the summer is as tempting to me as a walk through a candy store is to others.

Booth after booth is piled high with multicolored tomatoes, corn and bell peppers.

This is the time of year, I like to take full advantage of what’s out there, and this dish of Shrimp With Summer Vegetables from chef Kenneth Temple, a private chef in Dallas, let me do just that.

Summer corn scraped from the cob adds a delightful freshness here, but you can use frozen or canned as well.

He tosses in multicolor cherry tomatoes and red or orange bell peppers, so the dish is full of bright colors. Minced jalapeños give the vegetables heat and lemon juice and zest add zing.

Then, right at the end, he stirs in fresh spinach and parsley to wilt and fresh garlic for a little additional bite.

The vegetables – still slightly crisp – walk a line between sweet and spicy, making them ideal to serve with grilled seafood and meats. (I actually enjoy eating a big bowl of the vegetables, which are similar to a succotash, all on their own.)

For Temple, however, they are an ideal foundation for one of his favorite cooking techniques: blackening.

When he was about 8, Temple said the first thing he ever cooked was a smoked sausage that he fried in a skillet until it was dark and charred on the outside. He added it to an omelet and loved the combination of creamy eggs and the crusty pieces of sausage.

“At 8 years old, I didn’t know it was a technique. I just enjoyed the bitter, crispy, crunchy exteriors.”

Here, the vegetables are the milder complement for the highly seasoned shrimp, slightly charred in fat over high heat.

“To me, this is the perfect example of a balanced dish,” he said. “You want to season everything, but you have to understand the flavors you’re building. With the milder vegetables and the spicy shrimp then it is all balanced.”

If you want to try blackening the shrimp, Temple’s technique is simple. First, he advises to remove your shrimp from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before starting to cook. Then turn the vent on over your stove, as it can get a bit smoky.

The shrimp are then tossed with melted butter and seasoned with your favorite spicy seasoning mix. Temple, who is originally from New Orleans, likes to use a Creole or Cajun blend.

“If your protein is cold, it’s going to cool off the butter and

Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet, such as cast iron, for a couple of minutes over medium to medium-high heat, add additional butter and watch as it melts and starts to bubble. The butter should not be smoking.

Then, add the seasoned shrimp, cooking them about a minute on each side. (The shrimp are done when they are opaque throughout.)

“It happens really fast,” Temple said.

If you are not comfortable with blackening, he recommends adding a tablespoon of oil. “That will help keep the butter from burning.”

If you are cooking the shrimp in batches and your butter does begin to burn, start over with a clean pan and fresh butter.

Also, he noted that you can make the shrimp in a neutral oil, such as vegetable, instead.

The oil should be hot before the shrimp is added; shimmering, but not smoking.

“For those who don’t know any better, they associate [blackening] with burnt, so it may be off-putting,” he said.

“They don’t understand how the high heat brings out all of the herbs and spices in the blackening seasoning.”

Temple loves to teach people to cook because he still gets inspired by learning new techniques and flavor combinations.

This recipe was created for his online cooking classes, the Hunger Trap, said Temple,

who is working on a six-class cooking show for the Food Network Kitchen App and conducting online classes for kids this summer.

“When people trying something new, it can be intimidating, but it opens you up to world of flavors and cuisine, trying new things,” he said.

Shrimp with Summer Vegetables 45 minutes 4 to 6 servings Chef Kenneth Temple, who was born in New Orleans, says people tend to overcomplicate blackening shrimp.

This simple technique requires heating butter until bubbling hot and then dredging the shrimp in a spicy seasoning, such as a Creole or Cajun blend. Make your own spice blend or buy it. Then, the shrimp are quickly cooked over very high heat until deep brown and slightly charred. To make the vegetables, stroll through the farmers market and pick up your favorite produce. Keep the spices mild in the vegetables to balance the flavorful shrimp. If you prefer not to blacken the shrimp, the vegetables are great with grilled, poached or broiled shrimp as well. Serve with hot sauce and lemon wedges, if desired.

Make Ahead: The vegetables can be made up to 1 day in advance.

Storage Notes: Leftover shrimp and vegetables can be refrigerated in separate containers for up to 3 days.

Where to Buy: Creole or Cajun seasoning can be found in wellstocked supermarkets.

NOTE: Temple leaves the tail shell on the end of the shrimp to protect the tender tip in the blackening process.

You can do this or peel the shrimp completely.

For the vegetables: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound cherry tomatoes, halved 1 medium onion (about 8 ounces), chopped 1 red or orange bell pepper (about 7 ounces), chopped 2 jalapeños, seeded, ribbed and minced (optional) 16 ounces fresh or frozen corn (if frozen, no need to defrost) 1 lemon, finely zested and juiced 1 ⁄4 cup no-salt-added chicken broth or water 6 ounces baby spinach 1 ⁄4 cup chopped fresh parsley, plus more (optional) for serving 2 cloves garlic, finely grated or minced For the shrimp: 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided, plus more as needed 24 large (21-25 per pound) shrimp, peeled and deveined (see NOTE) 2 tablespoons Cajun/Creole seasoning, preferably low or no-salt Make the vegetables: In a large, nonstick skillet over medium heat, add the oil and heat until shimmering. Add the tomatoes and cook, stirring, until blistered, about 2 minutes. Add the onion, bell pepper and jalapeño and cook, stirring, until just starting to soften, about 2 minutes. Pour the corn on top and let it sit undisturbed for about 2 minutes. Stir to combine and cook until the onions are translucent, and the bell pepper softens, about 3 minutes.

Stir in the lemon zest and juice, chicken broth or water and cook for

about 3 minutes. Turn off the heat, then stir in the spinach, parsley and garlic until the spinach is wilted.

Cover to keep warm.

Make the shrimp: Turn on the vent over your stove, if you have one. In a large, microwave-safe bowl, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.

Toss the shrimp in the butter to lightly coat. Place the shrimp on a platter and season liberally and evenly on both sides with the Creole/Cajun seasoning; it’s OK if some of it falls off.

In a large skillet over mediumhigh heat, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter until bubbling. Increase the heat to high and add the shrimp in a single layer to the skillet. Cook undisturbed until they turn deep brown, about 2 minutes, then flip and cook until deep brown on the other side, about 2 minutes more.

Watch carefully, the butter will turn brown, but should not smell burned. If you’re cooking in batches and the butter does start to burn, carefully wipe the skillet clean and start over with fresh butter for the next batch. To check if the shrimp are done, cut one in half – it should be opaque throughout.

Divide the vegetables among plates, top with the shrimp and sprinkle with parsley, if using.

Prepare tacos: Wash and pat dry lettuce leaves with a paper towel, then place on individual plates or a large platter.

Place corn in a small saucepan set over medium heat, and toss until it is slightly charred and warmed through.

Divide chopped chicken among the lettuce leaves. Top each with minced onion, corn, black beans, diced avocado and diced tomato.

Drizzle cilantro-lime dressing on top of lettuce wraps, then garnish with crumbled Cotija cheese and crumbled corn tortillas, if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite cold Mexican lager.

Remote work losing its luster Employers are calling people back to the office

fter months of keeping employees at home to dodge Covid-19, many companies are concluding that the best place for most of their workers is back at the office.

The pandemic proved that people don’t need to sit in the office full time, but employers are bringing people back on at least flexible schedules, shattering the illusion of a workplace revolution that leaves most people signing on from home.

“Nobody has that full crystal ball,” said Jenni Morejon, president and CEO of the Downtown Development Authority in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “Human beings are creatures of habit, and the notion that people will never go back to the office – that is probably a lot of hype and hysteria.”

She believes the real question is the degree to which workers are burned out “from remote working full time.”

A national survey of 185 companies by CBRE, a real estate service firm, suggests that managements now see the office as a better means of supporting collaborative work than relying on remote communications.

The firm’s Spring 2021 Occupier Survey found 41% of companies interviewed intend to return to steady office use in the third quarter of this year, while 20% are targeting the fourth quarter. Another 23% said their workers have already returned to their places of employment.

“Multiple factors support this sentiment, including the ongoing rebound of the U.S. economy and companies’ realization that they need to retain more office space than they previously thought,” said Julie Whelan, CBRE’s head of occupier research.

Some observers think companies have no choice but to recall most workers because clients are restless about the services they’re receiving.

“The biggest user of office space in South Florida tends to be banks, investment shops, wealth management companies, law firms and real estate companies,” said Stephen Bittel, chairman of the real estate services firm Terranova. “We tend not to have large corporate users here. Those service firms had businesses that are well designed to work from home.”

“They congratulated them-

selves” for cutting expenses through remote work, he said, But the cuts may have boomeranged for some.

“They have spent no money on travel and client entertainment and have not replaced employees and support staff,” Bittel said. “They think they’ve bottled lightning for a moment.

The flip side is that clients and customers are screaming about the incredibly slow pace of transactions getting completed.”

While many acknowledge that remote work demonstrated the benefits of technology, there is a strong belief that communication and training are better done in person. That includes people who are learning on the job.

Isabella Guttuso is a student intern from the University of Florida at EDSA of Fort Lauderdale, a decades-old architectural firm. She insists that human interaction is important for growth and for learning how to collaborate with other adults in the workplace. She is studying landscape architecture and believes it’s unlikely she’d pick up the nuances of the business via Zoom.

“I’m trying to learn and get my feet wet,” she said. “I definitely needed that interpersonal experience. We’re constantly sketching and working together and getting people’s feedback in that way. I feel like even for people not in the design field, that sense of community you get from the workplace is so important.”

Training is better done in person, agreed Brandon Isner, associate research director for Florida with CBRE. Technology can accomplish only so much.

“When people come into the office everyone is so glad to see each other,” he said, “Technology is great, and I love Zoom.

That said, that human element cannot be replicated by Zoom.

That’s eventually what’s going to win out.”

Firms heading back to the office During the pandemic, the benefits of remote work depended on the industry. While harder to pull off in hospitality and leisure, which relies heavily on personal contacts with customers, professional service firms found an easier path.

“Allowing employers to work remotely on a wholesale basis will in some situations be driven

by the industry,” said Denise Heekin, a labor and employment lawyer and Broward County resident who manages the Miami law office of Bryant Miller Olive P.A. “Certainly, technology has made it a lot easier for attorneys to work from home and staff to work from home, and certainly it’s nice to have that option,” she said.

The firm allowed employees to work at home except for one person who staffed the office.

“We just recently went back to having each person come in at least twice a week, and we rotate that,” Heekin said. “We have papers and files and documents that may not all be on our computers, We will need a brickand-mortar footprint.”

Some believe it will take until the end of summer before most South Florida employers settle on where their employees should land as managements try to figure out a new normal while Covid-19 variants lurk in the background.

One upshot could be smaller spaces for some companies that conclude that portions of their work forces can continue spending some of their workweeks at home.

At the same time, office spaces that remain empty are likely to be snapped up by outof-state companies seeking new homes for their headquarters or regional operations.

“I do think we will have a reduced footprint in South Florida and around the country,’ said Siri Terjeson, professor of entrepreneurship at Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business. “But the good news is more and more companies are relocating to South Florida.

That’s your silver lining.”

Some companies will reduce spaces “because you don’t need people in the office eight hours a day, five days a week,” she said.

“When people’s leases are up for renewal they will dial back the space,” she added.

The volume of companies seeking office space is on the rise, said Ken Krasnow, vice chairman of institutional investor services at Colliers International, the real estate services firm.

“Six months ago, at the height of the pandemic, there was a real thought of ‘do people need to go back to the office in total?’’ ‘he said. “What we’ve heard from our clients is the number of companies looking for space

has exponentially increased in the last 30 to 60 days. You talk to office brokers out there and they’ll tell you there are a lot of tours.”

The theme is an important sales point for commercial real estate brokers who have clients with space to lease.

“Across the board, whether companies are adopting more flexible office schedules or not – the space itself is being viewed as a place to support a company’s ability to attract and retain talent,” said Tere Blanca, CEO of Miami-based Blanca Commercial Real Estate, which represents large commercial landlords in Broward County.

Locally, the demand for space from companies seeking to relocate is on the rise, brokers say,

A unique market From Miami to West Palm Beach, analysts say. the office market is unlike any other in the country, with more new tenants signing leases, “Miami and South Florida are a bit of an outlier,” said Isner of CBRE. “No one’s concerned about our office market right now. We’ve seen an unprecedented amount of new interest in this market.”

Isner has seen heavy leasing activity by new tenants in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Plantation and Fort Lauderdale.

“They’re signing leases and they’re expanding,” he said.

Interior design firms are getting a lift.

“We’ve seen a major impact in our industry all the way around in the last six months or so,” said Brianna Brown, president and CEO of Fine Line Furniture and Accessories in Coral Gables.

“We’re seen a huge increase in professionals wanting to reopen their businesses, or we have an influx of corporations coming from other places in the U.S.,” she said. “They know and they understand how people feel about returning to work.

They’re really trying to alter their atmospheres. Some people want to jump back in. For those [employees] who are hesitant, they’re trying to make it a better environment to appease them.”

In downtown Fort Lauderdale, which has seen a building boom of high rises designed for office, retail and apartment living, economic development advocates argue the city’s business district will remain

attractive as a center for work.

“I think downtown Fort Lauderdale is going to be well-positioned” as a place for more companies to set up shop, said Morejon, at the Downtown Development Authority. “There’s this sense of community and place as opposed to suburban office parks where you’re back to driving to the parking lot and walking into the building.”

The city’s leasing rates are cheaper than its counterparts, which is another incentive to move downtown, she said.

Christina Stine Jolley, a vice president of Blanca Commercial Real Estate in Fort Lauderdale, said the 35-floor The Main Las Olas, a new 1.4 millionsquare-foot, mixed-use office, residential and retail community, is leasing up quickly.

“Over 50% of that activity is from out of the [local] market,” she said. Two professional service firms from New York each signed for between 8,000 to 10,000 square feet. She declined to identify them.

“We’re over 50% leased right now,” Stine Jolley said. “If we close every deal we are negotiating, we would only have two floors left.”

Allure of suburbia Outside the city limits, brokers and employers see advantages operating in the suburbs, where people don’t have to jostle each other in crowded elevators and battle downtown traffic.

“It seems like there is a reevaluation taking place of the need to be in an urban center,” asserted Jonathan Calderon, director at Gibraltar Realty & Management. His firm represents Monarch Gardens in Miramar, which offers nearly 100,000 square feet of office and retail space.

“This whole [pandemic] experience has proved how people can work outside of the office, but on a human level there is a desire to collaborate in person and not have appointment-driven dialogues with your peers,” he said.

How companies choose to reconfigure work spaces “will come down to the resourcefulness and empathy of each individual company,” he said.

“Those companies that want a smaller footprint will undoubtedly have an easier go of it than somebody occupying an entire floor plate.”

The magic of David Harbour as an actor is his ability to blend toughness and vulnerability, cheekiness and authenticity, physical prowess and an every-man aesthetic.

It’s that unusual interplay of assets that made him a star as police chief Jim Hopper on Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and now an intriguing new character in the upcoming Marvel film “Black Widow,” out in movie theaters July 9. He plays Alexei Shostakov, a Russian “Captain America” equivalent nicknamed Red Guardian.

Most of the film, he is in full middle-aged, paunch form wearing a red and grey suit, a father figure to “Black Widow” Avenger Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and spy Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh).

The film was supposed to come out last year, but the pandemic delayed its release.

Fortunately, people are starting to come back to the theaters, as evidenced by the success of “A Quiet Place 2″ and “F9: The Fast Saga.” Industry pundits are expecting strong results from this latest Marvel movie as well. (The film will also be available for $29.99 on the Disney+ streaming service.)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently spoke with Harbour via Zoom. Here are excerpts: Q: That is quite a beard you wear in the movie. Is it au naturel?

Harbour: Most of the movie.

There is one reshoot we did where it’s me yelling out of a helicopter. One line. “Let’s go!”

That was a full fake beard. But the rest of the movie is my real beard. No enhancement. That disgusting ratty beard.

Q: You were promoting this movie before the pandemic when you thought it was coming out last year. Have your feelings about the film changed since then?

Harbour: It’s kind of joyous.

There was discussion early on to release it just on Disney+.

I was kind of into that. I said, ‘Let’s get the movie out.’ They said, ‘No. Let’s wait until movie theaters come back.’ I said, ‘Oh, come on.’ I realize now that they’re very right. I’m so happy you have a big movie like that just as the world is starting to open up because Marvel movies have become this thing over the past last 10 years.

They are a joyous way to come together and have this fantasy experience together. There is such a big fan base for them.

It’s almost like they’re becoming part of our mythology.

Q: It has to be seen on a big screen. I had to watch on a tiny laptop. I’m not getting the full experience.

Harbour: Me too! I can’t wait to see it in a theater myself and see it on a big screen.

Q: What did you like about playing the Red Guardian?

Harbour: There was hardly anything I didn’t like. It’s hard to find anything I had trouble with except for doing stunts because I’m terrible at them and I get hurt. I hurt myself a lot. But when they show you the finished product, you’re like, ‘Wow! That’s fantastic!’

In terms of Alexei, he’s just so human. There are so many contradictions. Right from the beginning of the movie, he does this thing that’s incredibly brutal in a certain way and takes the rest of the movie for you to go like, ‘This guy?’ You warm to him. He does have this humor, which comes out of the fact he is so oblivious to his own narcissism. He’s such a idiot.

There are people in your life who are like, ‘Come on! Get it!

You’re not paying attention!’ He doesn’t get it.

Q: A therapist would go crazy trying to figure him out.

Harbour: He’s the perfect specimen. He’s got a lot to work out like guilt, shame and remorse. He’d be great in therapy!

Q: You’ve done a lot of stunt work in the past. Was

this the toughest of them all?

What injuries did you have from this movie?

Harbour: By far, this was the toughest I’ve ever done. In the beginning, I was just so big, like 270, 280 pounds. So my knees were really shot. There was a lot of running around and climbing that happens in the prison, which was the first thing we shot. He has this super strength where he can jump. They have me on wires.

That stuff was hard. But it wasn’t as hard as a sequence in the beginning. Really simple stuff. I tore a hamstring.

Thankfully, it was the last night of the whole sequence.

I was just running. I’m just boogying and I felt this pop.

That sucked. I was a little bit busted, but I didn’t break my legs or anything.

Q: “Stranger Things” involves stunt work, too, right?

Harbour: We’ve done some crazy stuff this season. I can’t wait for you guys to see it.

Q: You shot some of that before the pandemic.

Harbour: We shot some of it but we’ve been shooting more since last September.
