The ideas that define critical race theory are not new. To varying degrees, states and local school districts have been addressing elements of the “theory” for nearly 50 years. There are important arguments made by advocates and opponents of the theory that ultimately must be processed through rigorous public debate and policy-making processes. While I believe that to the extent possible, public schools ought to be included in the open marketplace of ideas, it is particularly important that students are not sheltered from controversial ideas that are based upon thoughtful arguments and alternative interpretations. After all, a central mission of public education is to help students become independent, open-minded, ethical and creative thinkers. FAIRFIELD — Vallejo has reached 10,000 coronavirus cases since the Covid-19 pandemic started. The Solano County Public Health Division on Monday reported Vallejo added 12 new cases since Friday’s update. The county reported 52 new cases since Friday, taking the total to 33,898 countywide, a 17.33 three-day daily average. There were no new deaths reported, with the county number at 244, and the number of residents hospitalized Monday by Covid-19 was eight, the same as Friday, the county reported. Active cases were down 18 to 144. The percentage of residents 12 and older who have received at least one virus vaccination is up to

FAIRFIELD — Natalie Victorine, a 2021 Dixon High graduate, was awarded the top agriculture scholarship from the Friends of the Dixon May Fair. Victorine, who will major in agricultural communications this fall at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, received the $3,000 Ester Armstrong Scholarship. The award is named after the industry veteran and 2006-09 interim chief executive officer of the Dixon May Fair, who died of cancer. Six other Solano County students will share the remaining $9,000 in scholarships awarded, the Dixon May Fair group announced in a statement. FAIRFIELD — Fairfield Neighborhood Court is moving closer to fruition with panelist training continuing, according to a press release from Solano County District Attorney Krishna Abrams. The program is anticipated to begin hearing cases later this summer. Community members who applied to be a part of the program are undergoing a series of online training courses designed to prepare them to employ the Restorative Justice Program. Once completed, the trainees will serve as community volunteers in a mediation process

involving low-level misdemeanor offenses. The goal for the Restorative Justice Program is to prevent the revolving door of recidivism, according to the press release. This is achieved through a teamwork approach by all participants, the press release states. Neighborhood Court is run in cooperation with the police departments in participating cities. “We believe that by using alternatives to the traditional criminal justice system, such as Neighborhood Court, that we can effect a positive change on how our community deals with crime, while still holding offenders accountable for their

FAIRFIELD — Assemblyman Jim Frazier called Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signing of the state budget last week “historic” because it included $1.2 billion in funding over five years for the intellectually and developmentally disabled community. Frazier, who chairs the select committee on IDD issues, has helped lead the effort in budget legislation. He has long been an advocate and regularly volunteers with Special Olympics. The goal had been $1.4 billion over three years and the final decision was short of that, but Frazier, D-Fairfield, knows it is still a win. “I’m actually still pinching myself,” Frazier said. “I got the news on Friday and I was elated. There’s never been this kind of recognition for this community in need. I’m proud to work with the leadership and the governor in doing something that is long overdue.” Where and how the

FAIRFIELD — The Tomato and Vine Festival will return to downtown Fairfield in August with the Parks and Recreation Department taking the lead on what is expected to include much the same offerings from years past. This will be the 29th edition after last year’s event was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Fairfield City Council broke ties with long-time coordinator Fairfield Main Street Association in February and Parks and Recreation has now taken the lead. The event is scheduled Aug. 21-22. Juanita Johnson, superintendent of Parks and Recreation, will coordinate this year’s Tomato and Vine Festival. She said it will be in similar scope to previous years but planning is in the preliminary stages because of the pandemic. The focus right now is on Sunday’s Fourth of

July celebration. “I am excited about it, except the Fourth of July event is ahead and it is all hands on deck,” Johnson said. “Once we get through that event we can start focusing on this one. We’re still working on details but I would say it will be similar to 2019, plus or minus a few things.” Recent Tomato & Vine Festivals have drawn upward of 25,000 visitors to historic downtown Fairfield. What once started out as just a one-block event has expanded to five over time. Past festivals have featured music and food, contests featuring tomato eating and tomato recipes, a children’s fun zone and more. FAIRFIELD — City officials remind residents that fireworks of any kind are not only dangerous but are not allowed within the city limits. Residents are urged to turn in fireworks to the Fairfield Fire Prevention Bureau at 1200 Kentucky St. To report illegal fireworks, contact the bureau at 399-5627. With the combination of extremely dry conditions and high winds, the city reminds residents that lighting any type of fireworks could lead to severe consequences.

“In the city, we don’t allow fireworks of any kind,” Fairfield Fire Marshall Steven Conti said in a press release. “We recommend that folks go see a professional fireworks show. We emphasize the dangers in general because one little spark can cause a catastrophe. Our motto is ‘Don’t light, don’t ignite.’ ” The city also shared some statistics: Fireworks started an estimated 19,500 fires in 2018, including 1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires and 17,100 outside and other fires resulting in five deaths, 46 civilian injuries and $105 million in

property damage across the United States. The same year, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 9,100 people for fireworks-related injuries. Half of those injuries were to the extremities and 34% were to the eyes and other parts of the head, according to the press release. Children under 15 years of age accounted for more than one-third (36%) of the estimated number of fireworks-related 2018 injuries. VACAVILLE — PEP Housing, in partnership with EAH Housing, will break ground Thursday on the company’s first senior housing project in Solano County. The 60-unit apartment complex is to be located at 220 Aegean Way in Vacaville. The groundbreaking is set for 1 p.m. The project will provide 59 one-bedroom units for seniors with low- and very-low incomes, including 15 units set aside for seniors experiencing homelessness, and one two-bedroom unit for a property manager, according to information provided by the Petalumabased PEP Housing. “We are delighted to have reached the construction phase for Pony Express Senior Apartments, adding 59 affordable homes to California’s housing stock for deserving seniors,” Mary Stompe, executive director of PEP Housing, said in a statement. Vacaville provided two loans to PEP. One is a $500,000, 55-year loan as part of the project financing. The interest rate is at 1%. The company also

VALLEJO — A Chicago-based transit firm joins SolTrans as a service operations partner in south Solano County. “We are looking forward to the fresh, new approach that Transdev will bring to our daily operations,” John Sanderson, operations manager for Solano County Transit, said in a statement. “Our goal is to provide our passengers with a safe, reliable, courteous, efficient and accessible transportation experience and this partnership will help us achieve that goal.” Transdev will operate the multimodal SolTrans system within the cities of Benicia and Vallejo, with regional connections to Bay Area Rapid Transit in Contra Costa County. It also will maintain the SolTrans fleet of 68 buses to deliver 16 bus routes, which include nine local routes, three supplemental school routes operating within the Benicia and Vallejo area, three lines

which provide regional service connections, and the entire paratransit service. “We know that our experience, including our electrification expertise, along with our knowledge of this region, can make a difference to SolTrans and their riders,” Ron Bushman, Transdev regional vice president for the Northwest region, said in the statement. “The new technology options that we provide will offer significant improvements to the service, quality and passenger experience. We are looking forward to helping SolTrans recover from the recent effects of the pandemic and make a positive impact to support our new partnership,” he added. Its California services include Napa and San Jose. LAKE BERRYESSA — A 25-year-old Guatemalan has been identified as the man who drowned Sunday at Lake Berryessa – the second drowning in nine days at the popular lake. Marcos Salvador Grijalva Pocasangre was visiting family in San Pablo, the Napa County

VACAVILLE — The schedule for Vacaville’s Fiesta Days is continuing to take shape with the bulk of the celebration taking place over Labor Day weekend in September. G ener a l ch a i r man Karen Juilfs said plans are moving forward for a festive Sept. 2 through Sept. 6. “We’re looking forward to having an open Fiesta Days and giving the community something to be proud of,” Juilfs said. “I think it will be good. Fiesta Days may be a little different and some things may not be back until May. It’s a work in progress.” T he t rad it iona l parade and carnival will return, along with a classic car show, Vacaville Idol Contest, Whiskerino Contest and jalapeño eating contest. The beer garden and vendors section also will be back. There is an Aug. 6 deadline to register for a parade entry. Bands have already been booked for live music and they include Journey’s Edge, California Cowboys, Great Wide Open, Raccoons at the Party, Rust Buckets and the Pub Katz. The full calendar of events with times, places and added bands will continue to grow and can be found at vacavillefiestadays.org. Some Fiesta Dayssanctioned events are coming before September. The Vacaville Fiesta Days Car Show is scheduled for July 17. It will feature all makes of Volkswagens and be located at the intersection of Main, School and McClellan streets. Except for property tax, spering we don’t have a lot of other revenue,” Supervisor Jim Spering said in a phone interview Tuesday. “If you look at city budgets, or at . . . King said having a world-class agriculture research university close by certainly helps to recruit and grow these new farming operations. He said not only will these companies be able to partner with the university on research and other aspects of their operations, but they also will have access to the next generation of farmers. Reworking the uses allowed in the commercial highway districts also is a reaction to the changes it needs for the “motoring public” and the business sectors using those transportation lanes in and out of the county. “This also gives us an opportunity to meet our (regional housing) needs,” Calder added, noting the state requirement

for developing a certain amount of various housing types, from lowto higher-income stock based on population and the existing and future markets. The idea here, Calder added, is to create affordable housing for the workforce in the same vicinity as the new commercial and other developments. The Board of Supervisors in early April raised the possibility of the county getting into housing development – typically a city task – to create more affordable housing in the county, and even housing for the homeless population. “I think it’s time the county looks at a strategic plan for affordable housing, even if we have to amend the General Plan to identify places to put in affordable housing,” Spering said at that meeting. The first Planning Commission hearings on general plan amendments could come as early as September, with the Board of Supervisors holding hearings in November. Spering said part of the task is to determine what the county can amend on its own authority, and would require voter approval. A second phase would include study of the area between Vacaville and Dixon for possible general plan changes. The formal hearings that would follow the study would not be expected to take place until March.

victims whose lives have been lost and those still missing are “invariably incredibly special people” who have touched others “all across the world.” Family members of those unaccounted for remained hopeful, despite the strong undercurrent of despair and futility. A couple of hundred people gathered Monday night at a beach vigil to remember the victims of the building collapse, with both relatives and strangers joining in the silence and the pain. “I have not lost any hope or faith,” said Martin Lagesfeld, whose 26-yearold sister Nicole lived in unit 804 of Champlain Towers South with her husband, Louis. “I know she’s still there, I know it,”

Lagesfeld told WPLG-TV. Cranes at the scene on Collins Avenue and 88th Street continue to move slowly but steadily to remove buckets of rubble. Apartments still standing next to the collapsed sections of the tower were numbered 2 through 11 in green spray paint to identify the levels. Rescue crews continued digging a large trench through the rubble of the collapsed 136-unit Surfside condo tower. They used heavy equipment to create the trench, which is described to be 125 feet long, 20 feet wide and 40 feet deep. It was created for two purposes. One of the reasons is to let rescuers search for survivors in other parts of the pile with their dogs,

cameras, sonar and infrared technology. It was also part of an effort to combat a “deep” fire that the county’s mayor, Levine Cava, described over the weekend as “hampering” search efforts. On Tuesday, MiamiDade Fire Chief Alan Cominsky said 3 million pounds of concrete have been removed from the site of the condo collapse but there are still barriers to progress in the search efforts. He said rescue workers are not going back into the west section of the building facing Collins Avenue that is still standing because it is too dangerous, and he also said that they cannot enter a large area under the rubble on the eastern side because of the same risk.

Nationally, fire management teams are having to compete with each other for crews and equipment much earlier in the season than in years past. On June 22, the National Interagency Fire Center, which coordinates fire response from Boise, Idaho, raised the national preparedness to level 4 on a 1 to 5 scale, saying it was the second earliest it had reached that point. The shortages have filled crews on the fire lines with anxiety and led to louder calls for change. “We’re at a point where we’re simply going to be overwhelmed year after year going forward given the current systems we have in place,” said Jim

Whittington, an expert in wildland fire response. “We really need to look at the way we staff and work wildland fires, the way we fund them, and the way we take care of our people. We need a full reset.” Along with calls for higher pay – a firstyear Forest Service firefighter currently earns a base wage of $13.45 an hour – there are those like Whittington who believe firefighting needs to become a fulltime job. Currently, the federal government fills its ranks each summer with thousands of seasonal firefighters who don’t get health insurance and are laid off after about six months. Some of these workers struggle at the end of the season as months of stress take their toll.

The largest of the fires, the lightningsparked Lava fire in Siskiyou County, forced the evacuation of at least 8,000 residents Monday afternoon as gusty red flag conditions fueled the searing flames. Pacific Northwest heat wave sets up ‘grim’ migration for salmon on Columbia, Snake rivers Tribune Content Agency SEATTLE — This is shaping up to be a dire summer for fish and trees. Temperatures in the Columbia and Snake rivers are already within two degrees of the slaughter zone of 2015, when half the sockeye salmon run was lost because of high water temperatures. An estimated 250,000 sockeye died that year long before reaching their spawning grounds. The sockeye run is at its peak right now just as temperatures hit record highs across Washington state and in Idaho. Spring and summer chinook and steelhead migrating in the rivers also are at risk. Salmon are cold-water animals. Temperatures above 62 degrees make them more vulnerable to disease, and as temperatures climb higher, they will stop migrating altogether. The risk of heat stress is present in the mainstem rivers, but also in fish ladders, where salmon will turn around and head back down river if the temperature is higher at the top of the ladder than where they entered it. Cooling water released at the top of the ladders can only do so much as air temperatures reach unprecedented highs. Water temperatures are already at dangerous levels despite an earlier start to cold-water releases from deep in the Dworshak Dam, on the Clearwater River, upstream of Lower Granite Dam on the Lower Snake River. Nonetheless, temperatures in the tailrace at Lower Granite are still edging above safe levels for salmon and are

Instead of migrating naturally in the river, the fish would take the highway to an inland hatchery

for spawning. “Idaho is preparing to move fish, if they have to,” she said adding that very low flows in the Snake River, at 60% of average, are compounding the temperature problem. Trucking fish obviously is not preferred to natural, in-river migration, McGrath said. “But not at the risk of losing most of the run.” After the last sockeye meltdown in 2015, the Fish Passage Center concluded in a 2016 memo that a drawdown of the Lower Granite reservoir offers significant potential for reducing the water temperatures at the dam, and possibly contribute to

overall lower temperatures at the other downstream Snake River sites. The idea, so far, has not gained traction. A GOP Congressman, Mike Simpson of Idaho, has proposed going further, to take out the Lower Snake dams and replace their benefits to boost survival of salmon and steelhead at risk of extinction, a proposal generating plenty of heat of its own.

Trees stressed by heat Trees are also suffering. Trees are already stressed after a spring drought. March and April were the fourth driest on record in Washington State since 1895,

according to the state Department of Ecology. Then June – long called Juneuary by locals West of the Cascades for its relentless cool, wet gloom – instead came on hot and dry and now is punishing trees with baking heat. Hot dry weather pulls water out of trees, and with inadequate moisture in the soil, the interior plumbing of trees ruptures, or cavitates, noted Tom Hinckley, former director for the UW Botanic Gardens’ Center for Urban Horticulture and emeritus professor at the UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. Stressed trees are more vulnerable to bugs and pathogens. Of course the worst tree killer is fire – and conditions this year are set for fire, with dried out vegetation and soils. Even if trees die back but survive this year, they will be stunted in next year’s growth. That is because this is the time when trees need to be growing their strongest, and socking away food stores for next year’s spring growth spurt. But they have little moisture with which to power photosynthesis, by which they make food and grow new tissue. The suffering of trees this spring and summer will be recorded. Not only on a landscape that will see more dead trees and trees dying back, usually from the top down. But in rings that in the future will show a harsh season with little growth, as the tree hunkers down, just trying to survive.

Williams, who was seeking a historic 24th Grand Slam title at an event she has won seven times, was tearful as she withdrew from the match. Williams had broken Sasnovich and led 3-1, appearing to be in full control of Tuesday’s contest on Centre Court. But she suffered an

ankle injury in the fifth game after seeming to slip while playing a forehand. With Williams’ movement clearly limited, Sasnovich broke back and Williams left the court for treatment as she took a medical timeout. She re-emerged to huge applause and bravely tried to continue but was visibly in severe discomfort. The 39-year-old called a halt to proceedings with the match tied at 3-3, after letting out a scream of pain as she tried in vain to reach the ball.

FA I R F I E L D — Sonoma Raceway has broken ground on an upgraded hospitality facility overlooking the iconic, hairpin Turn 11. The Turn 11 Club of Sonoma Raceway will offer a premium, luxury hospitality and viewing

experience on major event race weekends as well as the year-round racing events at the track. “Our goal is to create a welcoming and high-end focal point for our facility that represents Sonoma Valley well,” raceway Executive Vice President and General Manager Jill Gregory said in a statement. “We look forward to

entertaining our guests in this new space beginning next summer.” The existing Turn 11 building, which was the original raceway administration building and the oldest building on the property, will be demolished this week and construction of the new See Club, Page B10

The San Jose Sharks anticipate having the ability to host capacity crowds next season, but it may be a long time before every seat at SAP Center is filled on a regular basis again. The Sharks’ poor on-ice performance the last two years – combined with

other possible factors out of their control – has led to a notable decline in the team’s season ticket sales for the upcoming season. Sharks Sports & Entertainment president Jonathan Becher said the franchise to date has sold roughly 9,000 season tickets or equivalents for next season, a decrease

The complaints, which name former communications director Eric Kay and longtime vice president of communications Tim Mead as defendants in addition to the Angels, accuse the team of wrongful death and negligence. The lawsuits allege Kay “had a long history of drug abuse” and provided drugs to “at least five” Angels players other than Skaggs. “The Angels owed Tyler Skaggs a duty to provide a safe place to work and play baseball,” the lawsuit filed in L.A. said. “The Angels breached their duty when they allowed Kay, a drug addict, complete access to Tyler. The Angels also breached their duty when they allowed Kay to provide Tyler with dangerous illegal drugs. The Angels should have known Kay was dealing drugs to players. Tyler died as a result of the Angels’ breach of their duties.” The lawsu its don’t seek a specific amount of damages. The Angels, an attorney for Kay, and Mead didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Skaggs was found dead in a hotel room in Southlake, Texas, on July 1, 2019, before the Angels opened a series against the Texas Rangers. The Tarrant County medical examiner ruled in an autopsy report that the 27-year-old’s death was an accident after “mixed ethanol, fentanyl and oxycodone intoxication” led him to choke on his vomit. An investigation by Southlake police and the Drug Enforcement Administration resulted in Kay’s arrest in August. He is charged in U.S. District Court in Fort Worth with providing coun-

Kay, who pleaded not guilty, is scheduled for trial in mid-August. He is the only person known to have been charged in connection with the death. The affidavit in support of the criminal complaint against Kay by DEA special agent Geoffrey Lindenberg alleged that “but for the fentanyl in [Skaggs’] system, [Skaggs] would not have died” and that Kay and Skaggs “had a history of narcotic transactions, including several exchanges wherein Kay acquired oxycodone pills for [Skaggs] and others from Kay’s source(s) and distributed these pills to [Skaggs] and others.” “I also learned that Kay would distribute these pills to [Skaggs] and others in their place of employment and while they were working,” Lindenberg wrote. The Angels hired former federal prosecutor Ariel Neuman to conduct an internal investigation

of the circumstances surrounding Skaggs’ death and have repeatedly denied that anyone in the team’s management “was aware, or informed, of any employee providing opioids to any player.” In October 2019, Kay’s Newport Beachbased attorney, Michael Molfetta, called attempts to blame Kay for the death “shortsighted and misguided.” “When all the facts come out,” Molfetta said, “I think what happened is a tragedy. . . . But to say it’s any one person’s fault is not right.” Around the same time, Mead told The Los Angeles Times that Kay never mentioned to him that Skaggs might be using opioids. “Eric and I conversed about a lot of things over the years,” Mead said. “Tyler and opioids were not one of them.” Kay’s employment with the Angels ended in November 2019, according

He announced in April he was stepping down from the position, citing family responsibilities. The lawsuits accuse Mead of being “negligent in numerous ways,” among them having “a duty to stop Kay’s interaction with players once he learned or should have learned that Kay was providing dangerous illegal drugs to players, including Tyler.” After Skaggs starred for Santa Monica High School, the Angels drafted him in the first round in 2009. He took a winding path to the major leagues – including a 19-month recovery from surgery on his pitching elbow – before becoming a key member of the team’s starting rotation. “The tragedy of Tyler’s death was made worse by the revelation that it could have been avoided,” the lawsuit said.

Yet not a drop of water storage has been added as Sites, and other storage projects are waiting for permit approvals. Numerous water infrastructure projects in the Central Valley, such as the Friant-Kern Canal, could have prepared our region for drought but lacked adequate funding. Almost three years ago, Californians saw one of the most horrific wildfires in our state’s history, with 85 lives lost. Thousands of homes and businesses in the Butte County town of Paradise burned to rubble. With a bipartisan group of state legislators, I witnessed firsthand an entire community nearly destroyed – a life-changing experience. As drought and wildfire conditions accelerate at unprecedented rates, Californians are left watching the two trains collide. Sacramento could have used this year’s healthy budget to take action to prevent future disasters. But our elected officials did not. The impacts of wildfire and drought are no longer confined to select regions of California. Californians across the state need to be vocal, and the time is now. We have to get the basics right in the state budget. California should not have to endure another heartbreaking wildfire season or drought before the governor and legislative Democrats take action.

irtually any utterance from Gavin Newsom’s mouth these days, as well as those from his press office and other outposts of his administration, contains the phrase “roaring back.” When, for example, the Legislature passed a state budget to meet the June 15 constitutional deadline, Newsom issued a statement declaring that “California’s economy is coming roaring back.” Not surprisingly, it’s also the key slogan in his resistance to a campaign to recall him, something voters will decide later this year. “Gov. Gavin Newsom has Dan Walters California roaring back,” the announcer in one of his campaign spots declares. “Newsom is delivering money to your pocket. Plus an extra $500 bucks for families with kids – $4 billion straight to small businesses through the nation’s largest grant program — cleaning up our streets and getting 65,000 homeless Californians into housing – and free pre-K for every California child, regardless of income.” To some, it might appear somewhat unseemly that Newsom so obviously merges his official actions – and taxpayers’ money – with his political campaign, but the once-discernible line between politics and policy vanished long ago. That said, do the facts support Newsom’s repetitive “roaring back” claim? To be sure, some Californians have prospered in the 15 months since Newsom declared a public health emergency due to Covid-19 and imposed restrictions on personal and economic activities. Those who could continue to work at home maintained their incomes and those on the top rungs of the economic ladder were enriched as the values of their investments such as stocks expanded, thanks largely to the Federal Reserve’s cheap money policies. Newsom has a multibillion-dollar revenue surplus mostly due to taxes on the affluent, money he’s now spending on the wide array of new benefits he’s touting in his campaign ads. However, broader economic data offer scant support for the “roaring back” mantra the governor is chanting these days. It’s more like creeping back – slowly. The state’s monthly report on employment, issued June 18, frames the glacial pace of improvement. The state lost nearly 3 million jobs after Newsom ordered widespread business closures in March 2020, and since then we’ve recovered roughly half of them. Our 7.9% unemployment rate is still twice what it was before the shutdown and is the thirdhighest of any state, slightly less than Hawaii and New Mexico. In addition to the official unemployment rate, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics makes other calculations, including an important one on underemployment, called U-6, which includes not only workers without jobs but those who are only marginally attached to the labor force and those working part-time. California’s U-6 rate through the first quarter, 18.4%, was 4 percentage points above the national figure and the third-highest of any state, behind Hawaii and Nevada. Even more disturbingly, the U-6 rate in Los Angeles County, 24.1%, is higher than that of any state. The federal Bureau of Economic Analysis reported this month that during the first quarter of this year, California’s economic output increased by 6.3%, slightly lower than the national rate and in the lowest third of the states. The federal bureau also reported that California’s personal income grew by 42.8% during the first quarter, which sounds impressive until one looks at the nation as a whole and learns that California’s growth was the second-lowest of any state. The bureau notes that nationwide, “transfer payments” – mostly federal aid programs rather than earned income – accounted for virtually all of personal income growth. California’s economy is recovering, to be sure. But “roaring back?” Hardly.

it is his fault. In short, it also seems, one-finger birdies are at no risk of being placed on an endangered species list. I decided to write on this particular topic after receiving a travel forecast that indicated a lot of people were expected to be hitting the road for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. A near-record number, it seems. With more traffic comes more accidents and other troubles that will likely require tow truck operators to be out on the highways. Try to watch out for these brave souls, and give them plenty of room to do their work of mercy. In the spirit of the occasion, be safe and sane. Todd R. Get ready for a ‘Fast 10’ showdown

Tribune Content Agency As the credits roll on Universal’s “F9: The Fast Saga,” a stinger nodding to the “Justice for Han” outcry sets up what could be the biggest face-off in the upcoming “Fast 10” – and one of the most heated showdowns in “Fast and Furious” history thus far. In the scene, Jason Statham’s former rogue MI6 agent Deckard Shaw, last seen in the 2019 spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” is working his issues out on a punching bag somewhere in an undisclosed secured facility. Inside the bag is an informant, who swiftly offers up a flash drive full of intel. Shaw doesn’t need it. He’s pummeling just for fun. Then a ghost from his past appears at the door: Sung Kang’s Han, whom Shaw ostensibly blew up in a fiery Tokyo crash in “Fast & Furious 6.” (An act so heinous, so anti-”family,” so rude, it was depicted again for good measure in “Furious 7.”) Loaded glares ensue. The scene cuts to black – to be continued in “Fast 10,” perhaps? The big “F9” twist bringing Kang’s Han back from the dead serves several purposes, but to understand why, you might need to revisit a little “Fast” history. First introduced in the third film, “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” Han Lue, aka Han Seoul-Oh, swiftly became a fan favorite so popular he returned in the next three (prequel) films, despite having technically died at the end of “Tokyo Drift.” In a “Fast & Furious 6” postcredits scene, it was revealed that the Mercedes that fatally crashed into Han’s Mazda RX-7 was actually driven by . . . Statham’s Deckard Shaw, setting the stage for Shaw to become the main villain of the seventh film. But after trying to kill Dominic Toretto and the rest of his friends in “Furious 7” – disproportionate and misguided revenge for them having merely

put his brother Owen in the hospital – Shaw was redeemed in the eighth film, 2017’s “Fate of the Furious.” In addition to being welcomed to the family BBQ, he was given his own hero spinoff film, opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as special agent Luke Hobbs. Han fans wondered how the loyal Toretto “family” could possibly embrace his killer as one of their own. The move betrayed the core values of the “Fast” franchise, while “Hobbs & Shaw” seemed to prioritize the commercial viability of white heroism over the life of an otherwise beloved nonwhite character. “Justice for Han” was born. And in “F9,” directed by Justin Lin and written by Lin and Daniel Casey, that justice is delivered as Han reveals that he used Shaw’s attack as cover to fake his own death and go undercover for Mr. Nobody, while still mourning the loss of his love, Gisele. Which means that technically speaking, the filmmakers have found a way to absolve Shaw of the moral weight of killing Han. Even if he definitely, for sure, on purpose, meant to murder him and only did not murder him by virtue of a secret extraction. Either way, Han and Shaw have a lot of catching up to do. It’s telling that “F9” – which introduces Dom and Mia’s longlost brother Jakob (John Cena) as its primary antagonist – does not end with a bad guy or gal casting an ominous shadow over the celebratory Corona-clinking. There’s no mystery figure coming out of the woodwork to foreshadow the next chapter, no new threat to tease, although Charlize Theron’s Cipher is still out there, status unknown. Mostly, the stinger reminds us, there’s this matter of outstanding family business to clean up. True justice, Lin teases, is what will come next for Han as the franchise heads into its final chapters. Thanks to the ever-evolv-

ing nature of how “Fast” lore is written, Statham has for years had the unenviable task of answering to fans for Shaw’s actions. “Well, look. All we saw was a snapshot of something. We don’t know exactly what happened. We don’t know the full story!” Statham told the Los Angeles Times in 2019. “F9” lightens his load and opens the door for the main films to merge again with the “Hobbs & Shaw” spinoff branch, which could bring Hobbs, the shadowy Eteon organization and its yet-to-be-identified leader along with it. Lin, who had introduced Han and Kang to the universe in his first “Fast” film as director, took the challenge of correcting the course personally. On the set of “F9” he sported a “Justice for Han” shirt, wearing his intentions on his sleeve. And when Han did make his return to the franchise, revealed in a surprise appearance in the first “F9” trailer, the moment was an emotional one for Kang. Fans had showed him what Han meant to them. The irony, he notes with a laugh, is that few remember that he and Statham actually go way back. Many years ago they had costarred together in the Jet Li action flick “War” – as FBI agents on the same team. (That’s Kang’s character covering Statham from a sniper post in the film’s big climax; “2 Fast 2 Furious” cast member Devon Aoki also stars.) After filming wrapped in 2006, the two actors found themselves at the airport heading out. Statham asked what Kang had lined up next. Kang had a new movie opening soon – “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.” “And he goes, ‘Fast and Furious? That’s a good one to be a part of! Have fun with that,” Kang said. “Then fast forward: He kills me. And, you know, there’s some explaining to be done. . . I would love to explore that with him.”

If South won with the heart ace, he had only seven tricks available before West could gain the lead with the diamond jack to run his hearts. Sensing the problem, South ducked the second heart. Declarer felt much better when West started thinking. West was asking himself the significance of East’s discard. Eventually deciding – incorrectly – that his partner was signaling for a diamond shift, West led the diamond four at trick three! Declarer claimed 11 tricks: two spades, one heart, six diamonds and two clubs. Why was West wrong? Because if East had the K-Q-10-9 of diamonds, he wouldn’t have known that he could afford to signal with the king. After all, declarer might have had the ace-jack. Aguilera, Federline back Spears: ‘She deserves . . . freedom’ Tribune Content Agency Two prominent figures from Britney Spears’ past have added their voices to the growing chorus of support for the pop musician following last week’s bombshell court hearing. Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline and fellow “Mickey Mouse Club” alum Christina Aguilera both spoke out on behalf of the “Toxic” artist Monday. Their statements come nearly a week after Spears delivered an emotional plea to a Los Angeles court requesting termination of her controversial conservatorship, which has restricted the Grammy winner’s autonomy over the last 13 years. “What is best for her, Kevin supports her in being able to do that,” Federline’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told “Entertainment Tonight.” “It doesn’t matter how positive of an effect a conservatorship has had if it’s having a deleterious effect and detrimental effect on her state of mind.” Spears shares two children – Sean, 15, and Jayden, 14 – with Federline, the backup dancer-turned-DJ to whom she was married from 2004 to 2007. During her recent court appearance, Spears accused her conservators of limiting her access to her kids and preventing her from having more children by forcing her to use an intrauterine contraceptive device. Federline believes Spears should have “the best environment for her to live in and for his children to visit with their mother in,” his lawyer said, and “feels that the best thing for his children is for their mother to be happy and healthy.” In a lengthy Twitter thread, Aguilera also defended Spears, whom she met in the early 1990s while shooting “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club” variety series alongside fellow Mouseketeers Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake and more. “These past few days I’ve been thinking about Britney and everything she is going through,” the “Reflection” singer tweeted, along with a throwback photo of her and Spears as kids. “It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might

not be allowed to live life as they wish.” While addressing a judge on June 23, Spears laid out the conditions of her conservatorship in graphic detail, calling them “abusive” and accusing her conservators of forcing her to work nonstop, among other allegations. “To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those ‘close’ to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable,” Aguilera added. “The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly. “Every woman must have the right to her own body, her own reproductive system, her own privacy, her own space, her own healing and her own happiness.” After appearing on the star-making revival of “The Mickey Mouse Club” together as children, Aguilera and Spears went on to launch parallel careers in music, dominating the early 2000s pop scene and navigating a media circus that often pitted the women against each other. “While I am not behind the closed doors of this very layered & personal yet public conversation – all I can do is share from my heart on what I’ve heard, read and seen in the media,” Aguilera wrote on Twitter. “The conviction and desperation of this plea for freedom leads me to believe that this person I once knew has been living without compassion or decency from those in control.” Aguilera and Federline are among several celebrities who have publicly backed Spears in recent weeks. Others who have rallied behind the hit-maker in the wake of last week’s watershed court hearing include Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Cher, Brandy and Spears’ younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears. “To a woman who has worked under conditions and pressure unimaginable to most, I promise you she deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life,” Aguilera concluded her social media statement. “My heart goes out to Britney. She deserves all the TRUE love and support in the world.”

Sharks: Unable to host fans until April From Page B1 The Sharks missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year this season, marking the first time since the mid-1990s that the team has been out of the postseason in backto-back years. Becher said the Sharks’ average rate of seasonticket renewal for the last five years was in the 85 to 88 percent range, “so we are a little bit below our historic average, but it’s not a lot below. I think the best renewal year we’ve had in the last six or seven years might have been 89 or 90 percent.” The Sharks have seen season ticket sales decline over the last decade. In 2012, packed houses at the team’s 17,562-seat downtown arena were the norm as the Sharks had approximately 14,000 season ticket holders. By the 2017-18 season, the Sharks had sold roughly 12,000 season tickets or equivalents with a renewal rate of approximately 90 percent. Unlike past years when the renewal period lasted

from mid-January to late March, Becher said the team started its renewal drive in April and will keep that going until the anticipated start of the NHL’s 2021-22 season in October. Becher added that some former full-season ticket holders this year have opted to purchase halfseason plans instead and that a major reason for the team’s erosion in sales has been people moving out of the Bay Area. He added that prices did not go up for roughly 90 percent of season ticket holders, as their purchases from 2020-2021 rolled over into the upcoming season. Becher said the Sharks have seen a recent uptick in sales as renewals were at 79 or 80 percent in midMay. That leads him to believe that “it might grow a bit from there as people miss hockey even more and want to see it in person.” Sh a rk s gener a l manager Doug Wilson said last month that he feels the team can be in a better position to compete for a playoff spot next year. After the Sharks made the Stanley Cup Final in 2016, season ticket sales jumped by about 2,500, with new subscribers accounting for 70 percent of that number. From 2016 to 2019, the average announced attendance was well over 17,000 per game. For the 2019-20 season, their worst in nearly two decades, the Sharks’ average announced attendance at SAP Center was 16,427, down from 17,266 the year before. This season, the Sharks were unable to host fans until April, when they admitted between 500 and 1,600 spectators for each of their final seven home games. Next season, when fans buy tickets, they will have to declare that they are either fully vaccinated or have tested negative for Covid-19 within 72 hours of the date of the event.
