SUISUN VALLEY — The iconic building that was once used as a cold storage facility for area fruit and produce farmers, and was home to an antique shop for 40 years, has sold.

The Ice House, near the corner of Rockville and Suisun Valley roads, sold along with 22.95 acres of adjacent agricultural property.

Jimmy Pierson, whose family started Medic Ambulance and has been living in Solano County for decades, is the new owner, along with his mother, Helen Pierson of Green Valley, two sisters, Cindy McBride and Sandy Whaley, and a cousin, Kristi Kendall.

FAIRFIELD — Fatima Hernandez is a survivor of Covid-19 who took her experience and is using it to help others stay healthy.

Hernandez, the pharmacist project manager for Touro University College of Pharmacy, survived several weeks on oxygen in a hospital in Texas after doing a CPR class for her college degree.

She never thought for a second that she would be exposed to Covid,

much less flat on her back in a hospital, fighting for her life.

“I did the class and a few days later I got my first symptom,” she said. “I was like, no. No, this can’t be.”

But after putting on her favorite perfume, she couldn’t smell it.

She opened the bottle and sniffed: Nothing. She went to the hospi-

tal and was told it looked like she was not going to have a severe response, but they were wrong. She was back in the hospital within four days, on oxygen and in talks with the doctor about the possibility of being intubated.

“I didn’t want to do that. I knew the outcomes of being intubated and it wasn’t good,” she said.

Instead, they wheeled in a new type of breathing machine with a ventilator and oxygen. She credits See Clinic, Page A9

VACAV ILLE — Several hundred tickets to Six Flags amusement parks are free for the taking in Solano

County and across the region as an incentive for people to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

The ticket giveaway is part of California’s Vax for the Win incentive program.

A total of 50,000 tickets were set aside for Californians ages 12 and older, each of whom can get a free ticket to a Six Flags park upon receiving their first Covid-19 vaccine dose at clinics operated

SUISUN VALLEY — Ryan Clark began learning about ham radio operations about two years ago for his Boy Scouts Troop. It was a chance to earn a badge and to learn something new.

He didn’t realize he would get hooked on it.

“It is just fun,” the 13-year-old Fairfield resident said.

His dad set up a shed in the backyard with a table and chair for whenever he wanted to go out and practice with the equipment.

IT WENT FULL SPEED. SUDDENLY, MY LEGS WERE PARALLEL TO THE GROUND. THEN THEY HIT THE TREADMILL AND BOUNCED BACK UP. The treadmill was going faster than I could sprint! My legs hit the treadmill and bounced back up. Over and over. It was a disaster!

I couldn’t take my hands off the railing to turn the machine off because I’d fall. But if I kept going, it would throw me into the wall – or through the wall.

I panicked.

My legs were bouncing off the treadmill like it was a trampoline. They bounced maybe two or three times, but felt like 50.

I don’t know if Carl Lewis, Ben Johnson or Flo-Jo had

used it last (a very time-specific reference) or if I had somehow hit the full-speed button, but I swear it was set at 80 mph.

Finally, I managed to slap the off switch and the treadmill stopped. Disaster averted, narrowly.

Mrs. Brad was doubled over, laughing. Seriously.

I regained my dignity . . . kind of . . . and stepped off.

“Let’s go,” I told Mrs. Brad, who was still laughing into her hands. We went out opposite doors, as the guy – presumably disgusted with the dork who couldn’t even work a treadmill – shook his head.

I learned my lesson.

Always start slow.

Always be in control.

If you don’t know how something works, ask.

Don’t be the subject of a story by Mrs. Brad. She brought a man to Reno, just to watch him fly.

FAIRFIELD — Artist Nick Stiles has drawn some curious eyes to his work at the corner of Texas and Madison streets since he recently began his mural project downtown.

“It’s an active area and a lot of people have been very enthusiastic and have told me they like what they see,” the 29-year-old Rio Vista native said. “I had one critic who wasn’t happy with the design and thought it was boring, but to each their own.”

One passer-by already asked him to paint his fence. Another wants him to do a mural in a church gymnasium in Richmond.

Stiles was commissioned by the city as part of its Art in Public Spaces Pilot Project, the beginning of a city-led initiative to revive the public art landscape. Stiles’ work is the first of the mural projects associated with the new campaign.

In addition to murals,

Nick Stiles’ downtown Fairfield mural features life in the area. the city is also looking to install different media including sculptures and metalwork, and art along streetscapes and utility boxes. Art-based events to showcase both emerging and local resident artists are also part of the project.

Stiles said his design was selected by the city after the ad hoc committee deliberated over several submissions. He

received his degree in arts and humanities at Solano Community College before focusing on illustrations at California State University, Long Beach.

Some of his previous work is featured in Rio Vista.

Stiles has a mural in front of a flower shop and an even bigger 16-footby-60-foot display at the Rio Vista Fire Station. He mostly does graphic design work in smaller projects like album covers and T-shirts, but he cherishes the opportunity to work on the big canvas of a mural.

“I love the scale of it,” he said. “I create a grid that I follow of the brick design to know exact dimensions and where things will be.”

FAIRFIELD — Speeding drivers are being put on notice as California Highway Patrol units are partnering with other state agencies in the west to crack down on violators.

Twelve state law enforcement agencies are putting extra focus on speeding violators through Sunday. The Western States Traffic Safety Coalition traffic safety campaign is giving motorists “a dozen reasons not to speed,” according to a press release from the CHP. “Excessive speed and unsafe driving are a threat to everyone on the roadway,” CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said in a press release.

“The CHP and our allied state partners will be out in force this weekend with the common goal of saving lives through speed enforcement.”

More than 500 people were killed last year in California and more than

57,000 others were injured in crashes by unsafe speed.

CHP officers issued more than 28,000 speeding citations to motorists drivers in excess of 100 mph, and 9,300 during the first four months of 2021.

Officers are also looking for seat belt and

child safety seat violations, evidence of distracted driving, and driving under the influence.

The traffic enforcement effort began Friday.

CHP officials advise people who wish to report any emergencies or dangerous drivers to call 911.

FAIR F IELD — More than 1,000 Solano County residents have received their first coronavirus vaccine shots since the last Solano County update.

Public Health reported Friday that 247,915 residents have at least one shot, up 1,115, representing 66% of residents who are 12 or older.

There appeared to be a technical issue with reporting the number of those who are fully vaccinated and the total number of vaccines that have been distributed.

The county also reported 49 new cases since Wednesday, a two-day average of 24.5 cases, and a continuing upward trend in case reports.

“I’m not really concerned,” Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said. “We still have a fairly large number of our population that is not vaccinated.”

He said those who have tested positive are

telling Public Health officials that they had been out with friends and family, and had really not given the virus much thought lately.

Matyas said most of those infected are younger, so the positive testing is not resulting in bad outcomes.

Hospitalizations remain low, just eight individuals as of Friday, and there are no new Covid-related deaths reported. That number remains 244. Active cases climbed 16 to 162, the county reported.

Fourteen of the new cases were reported in Vacaville, taking that city’s total to 8,898. Fairfield added seven cases for a count of 9,173.

Vallejo continues to inch closer to 10,000 cases with 11 new reports and a total of 9,988.

Suisun City (2,323) added seven cases; Dixon (1,942) added six cases; and Benicia (1,025) added four. There were no new reports in Rio Vista (394) or in the unincorporated area of the county (103).

George McKinney

July 14, 1929 — June 5, 2021

George Lewis McKinney passed away on June 5, 2021, at the age of 91. He was born on July 14, 1929, to parents Joseph R. McKinney and Anna Alice Hanes in Bronaugh, Missouri.

The youngest of four children, George grew up in Nevada, Missouri, until he graduated from Walker High School in Walker, Missouri, and later joined the Navy.

George served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War, NAVY veteran classified as Fireman, and worked on diesel engines as a mechanic. While in the Navy, George met Mildred V. Ballew, who became his wife and later the mother of his four children.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, George worked in many places that utilized his expertise as a diesel mechanic. He started in San Francisco working on fishing boats, then in Oregon working on diesel tractors, then to the copper mines of Arizona working on locomotives. He then moved to Hawaii and began his work on ships in Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and later retired as a General Foreman.

After retiring, he and Mildred moved to Fairfield, California, where they lived for 20 years until moving to Bellingham, Washington, in 2018.

In his free time, George enjoyed hunting, working on cars and anything mechanical. He loved cooking for the Food Ministry at the Shiloh Church in Oakland, where he was a member. It was a very fulfilling endeavor.

George had a very dry sense of humor, quick wit and sly smile. Those who had the privilege of getting to know him loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter, Latricia Sargent (Colorado); sons, Theodore McKinney (Bellingham), Blythe McKinney (Oregon) and Mark McKinney (Hawaii); six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his father; mother; three brothers; and one sister.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, at the Shiloh Church, 3295 School St., Oakland, California. Interment with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, California.

Steven James Palfey May 20, 1955 — June 6, 2021

The Ragland family mourns the passing of Corranzo ‘Poncho’ Ragland Sr. on June 14, 2021, in Fairfield, California, at age 81.

He was born in Marshall, Texas, and as a young child moved to San Francisco where he met his wife, Audrey, of 55 years.

They later moved to Foster City where he worked for the San Mateo-Foster School District.

In 1994, he made his home in Fairfield and after 35 years retired from the school district. He also worked part-time at the Fairfield Performing Arts Center.

Poncho was well-liked, sociable and loved people.

He was a man of faith and made a joyful noise. He had a loving spirit and was cherished by his family.

He will be missed and leaves behind his wife, Audrey; son, Corranzo Jr.; daughters, Jackie, Anisha and Sharon; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Steven James Palfey, 66, passed away unexpectedly in his home in Fairfield on Sunday, June 6, 2021.

Steve, or ‘Palfey’ as most called him, was born May 20, 1955, at Travis AFB in Fairfield, California, to Steven and Juanita Palfey.

Steve was a lifelong resident of Fairfield, graduating from Sam Yeto in 1973. Steve soon landed a job working for the federal government at the Mt. Tamalpais radar installation. This opportunity opened the door to a career serving our United States military as a civil service employee for the Air Force at Travis AFB. Steve was a sheet metal mechanic by trade, serving to repair and rebuild many of the aircraft flying in and out of Travis, even in times of war. Steve retired in 2012, after 37 years of faithful service.

In his off time, Steve enjoyed boating and fishing the waterways of Northern California. Softball was a huge part of his life, playing on many local championship teams over several decades.

Steve was also fond of traveling. He and his longtime partner, Diane Honey, would often visit various Air Force bases throughout the West Coast.

Anyone who knew Steve knew how important music was to him.

He had a keen ear for melody and rhythm, as well as an uncanny perception of lyrics.

Some of his favorite bands were Steely Dan, Joe Jackson and Sons of Champlin.

In his later years, Steve enjoyed the morning crossword puzzle and nightly Jeopardy episodes. Steve’s sense of humor could have anyone in tears. His quick wit and dry sarcasm were a rare and special combination that will be fiercely missed.

Steve is survived by his daughter, Raychel Whedbee (husband Dallas Whedbee); son, Jacob Palfey; granddaughter, Maxine Whedbee; brother, Paul Palfey; and half-sister, Sheryl Altman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and half-brother, Larry Stanley.

Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at BryanBraker Funeral Home, 1850 Texas St., Fairfield. A brief reception will follow at the same location.

Lee Brown

Dec. 17, 1933 — June 9, 2021

Ford Lee Brown was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Mina, South Dakota, to Arvill Clay Brown and Anna Mathea Gunderson, the youngest of their six children, and went to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior on June 9, 2021.

He lived his life dedicated to his call of God to teach, and he faithfully and generously enriched the lives of his family, church, Armijo High School students and many others with his Bible studies, family history, love of science, and his writings on Christian living. Lee also had the gift of wisdom and empathy, and people of all ages turned to him for counseling and a listening ear.

Lee was 10 years of age when his family moved to Napa, California, and he began his work career delivering newspapers and became an Eagle Scout and Sea Scout.

After graduating from Napa High School in 1951, Lee attended Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) and earned a Chemistry degree with a Physics minor.

In Chemistry class, he met his future wife, Jean Miller, when she needed help with her homework. They were married in December 1953 and had a daughter, Martha, and son, Stephen, within two years. They created a loving and disciplined home filled with books, music, church activities and camping.

Lee and Jean were married 67 years when Jean passed away in February this year. Lee was unabashed in his love of Jean and was her caregiver for the last two years of her life. They demonstrated a genuine partnership in their parenting and service to others.

Following college graduation, Lee worked as a chemist for Union Oil Company while completing graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. His family moved to Fairfield in 1961 when Lee accepted the position of Science and Math Teacher at Armijo High School. He went on to become the Head of the Department of Science and served on and led many committees, such as Curriculum Specialist for the school district. Mr. Brown was considered the ‘toughest teacher’ at Armijo High by many of his students but also recognized for teaching character and remembered for using

chemical reactions in experiments to illustrate life lessons.

His Christian witness was an influence in a number of students’ lives and their relationships with him and with God were cultivated in a Friday night Bible Study he began in his home that lasted almost 30 years.

Lee loved learning and during the 1960s, he spent one summer at the University of Washington, Seattle, under a grant from the National Science Foundation and another at American University in Washington, D.C., and was selected to do research at the National Bureau of Standards. He also received four summer grants to study chemistry, physics and mathematics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, resulting in a Master of Science degree in 1974.

Each of these summers, his family accompanied him and was able to enjoy great experiences all across the country.

In 1979, he began studies at Berkeley New College for Advanced Christian Studies, leading to a Master of Christian Studies degree in 1982.

Lee retired from teaching in the 1980s but continued working for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District for over 20 more years.

Lee was very active in the Fairfield Nazarene Church, where he served as Director of Christian Education and taught several classes for over 30 years, and continued leadership roles during his next 26 years at Fairfield New Hope Nazarene Church. He was teaching Sunday mornings and evenings, and occasionally on Wednesday evenings, until churches closed for the pandemic.

Lee will be remembered for his love of reading and vast collection of books, for his compiling and writing of family journals and his knowledge of God and the scripture.

He is survived by his brother, Neal Brown; sister, Alveda Meneely; daughter, Martha (Mike) Johnston; son, Stephen (Tina) Brown; grandchildren, Sheri (Jason) Coffman, Michael Johnston, Christy (Matthew) Smith, John Brown; six great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

Along with his wife and parents, Lee is preceded in death by his brother, Arvill Brown; and sisters, Viola Albeyta and Anne Meneely.

NorthBay breaks ground on urgent care clinic in American Canyon Daily Republic Staff

FAIRFIELD — Leaders from American Canyon and NorthBay Healthcare celebrated Wednesday morning the groundbreaking of a new urgent care facility, scheduled to open in summer 2022.

NorthBay Urgent Care is expected to occupy 4,500 square feet at 416 Napa Junction Road in the Napa Junction Commercial Center. It will have 10 exam rooms, X-ray and a laboratory. The building has a capacity of 6,600 square feet and will allow NorthBay to eventually add primary and specialty care services in the future.

“We are overjoyed you are bringing these services to American Canyon,” Mayor Leon Garcia said in a press release. “This is what our growing community needs.”

NorthBay provides two other urgent care centers amid retail centers in both Fairfield and Vacaville. This new facility will be similar, with an advanced technology kiosk for checking in.

“Our involvement in offering Covid-19 vaccine pop-up clinics in American Canyon in 2021 helped establish connections and paved the way for the decision to expand to American Canyon, considered the gateway to the Napa Valley,” said Wayne Gietz, NorthBay vice president

of Ambulatory Services, in a press release. “We look forward to serving the community.”

The builder is Sierra View of Sacramento, which has constructed other buildings in American Canyon, including other medical office buildings.

The architect is Boulder & Associates, with offices in Sacramento and San Francisco. NorthBay is investing $1.5 million in building improvement, equipment, furnishings and technology.

NorthBay Urgent Care offers medical attention for conditions that are not life-threatening. Clinics also offer virtual care where patients can use smartphones to talk with an urgent care provider and get treated for a range of conditions.

Carbon Health currently operates a small urgent care clinic nearby in American Canyon. It will close when NorthBay Urgent Care opens next year.

“We believe in being a part of the fabric of the community,” B. Konard Jones, president and CEO of NorthBay Healthcare, said in the press release.

“We don’t hold groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings and fade away never to be seen again. We believe American Canyon should have an urgent care center close to home, eliminating the need to travel elsewhere.”

SUISUN CITY — The City Council has a full agenda Tuesday night.

On tap is the annual budget and financial plan as well as proposals to secure the position of a fire marshal and a possible first responder fee.

There is some good news in the annual budget, City Manager Greg Folsom wrote in his budget message. The numbers were not down as much as feared.

Folsom also cited some accomplishments over the past year, such as the new Holiday Inn Express.

The e c o n o m ic shutdown due to Covid-19 significantly affected Suisun City in the 2021 fiscal year “by artificially depressing sales tax and revenue and transient occupancy taxes, in particular,” as well as many user fees generated through rentals and programs, he wrote.

Thanks to cost control and more online shopping, the city was able to escape major reductions in sales tax revenues and Measure S money, he wrote in his message to the council.

The upcoming fiscal year’s total operating budget is $53 million with the general fund operating budget projecting revenue of $19.3 million.

A priority will be placed on identifying and creating new revenue streams, so the city can maintain its fire and police department’s staffing, Folsom wrote.

He noted the structural shortfall in the general fund, where expenses exceed revenue, has a gap that is narrowing.

The city also looks forward to receiving federal American Rescue Plan funding, which will be programmed later.

The proposed budget does not set aside money for dredging, work that needs to be done every seven to 10 years.

“Deferring saving this money will put a greater burden on future budgets to adequately save money

or potentially cause a need to borrow money for this project,” Folsom notes in his report.

No additional funding is recommended for additional r oad work , beyond t he required maintenance effort of about $10,300.

While the city does get additional funds from Senate Bill 1 and the Highway User Tax of about $1.2 million, Folsom wrote the city needs to spend about $5 million a year to maintain the current pavement condition level.

“While FY 2021 will be remembered as a lost year in many ways, FY 2022 will hopefully be a year of re-emergence from that dark days and there is a lot to be optimistic about in Suisun City,” he wrote.

Some opportunities include new cannabis revenues, new retail and residential developments as well as future industrial development.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our extraordinary father and our hero, Dr. Richard Marie Valeriote. Dad died Sunday, June 13, 2021, at 91 years of age, of heart failure. Known as Richie growing up, then as Dick as an adult, Dad overcame enormous obstacles to accomplish more than he ever dreamed was possible.

Dad was born in August of 1929, the 15th of 16 children in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

His parents, first generation Italian immigrants, fell on hard times during the Great Depression. He remembered his mother telling him, after paying for two older brothers’ education, ‘There’s nothing left for you. You’ll have to make your own way in the world.’ And he did. He gained admission to McGill University, and persuaded 46 acquaintances and strangers to loan him money for undergraduate and medical degrees at McGill.

At McGill he met the love of his life, Polly Pillet. A year after meeting, they married, and began the family that would eventually comprise five children. Tuberculosis soon separated them, and dad spent a year being treated for TB in a sanitarium. Polly waited for him, and when he recovered, he went back to McGill and finished medical school.

They moved their family first to Flint, Michigan, for Dad to complete his internship. Then, fleeing the cold, they moved to Fairfield, California. Dad embarked on a long and successful career as a family physician, becoming a skilled diagnostician.

Before the days of specialized OB/GYNs, he delivered hundreds of babies. Up until recently, when he was out and about in Fairfield, people would greet him and say, ‘You delivered me!’

A serendipitous event occurred when one patient paid him for his medical services with a parcel of land. That initiated Dad’s second, simultaneous career in real estate development. He eventually brought all three of his sons into the development business. Ever the Renaissance man, he loved learning new things. He subsequently added a third career to his resume when he formed the Bank of Fairfield. He remained Chairman of the Board of that bank for years until it was acquired by Bank of the West.

Dad diligently paid back the college loans he had taken from friends and acquaintances. Finally, six years after med school, he paid off the last one. He also repaid the generosity of those benefactors by emulating it. He made large

contributions to McGill University and Santa Clara University, and was on the Board of Regents at Santa Clara.

Despite working hard at three jobs, Dad was home every night for family dinner with Polly and his five children. He doted on Mom, who he always said was “the prettiest woman in the room.” He drove thousands of miles in the family station wagon and various RVs, exploring much of the U.S. and Canada, and creating wonderful childhood memories for his kids.

Dad wrote a memoir called ‘Alice Street,’ which was published by his alma mater, McGill University. When the local Barnes and Noble threw a book-signing party for him, people were lined up out the door to have their copies of ‘Alice Street’ signed, and to express their appreciation for his kind medical care. It was the sort of tribute that usually occurs only when a person has died. We are grateful he was able to enjoy it during his lifetime, with his wife and family present.

Even with all the hardships of growing up hungry and poor and the year suffering with tuberculosis, the greatest tragedy Dad had to face was at the end: watching his wife Polly suffer and die with Parkinson’s disease. Going on without her took all his strength, compounded as it was by the Covid-19 lockdown. Alone and isolated after 69 years of marriage, he depended on the love of his children and kind caregivers to assuage his loneliness. Dad’s faith in God helped him through this final challenge.

Dick Valeriote is survived by his children, Catherine Valeriote (Richard Anderson), Susan Valeriote (Ken Goldman), Rick Valeriote (Melissa), Chris Valeriote (Julie) and Pat Valeriote; brother, Pacifico Valeriote; sister, Anna Bordignon; grandchildren, Mattie Goldman Magdovitz (Joe), Mike and Nick Goldman, Ariel and Lauren Kozicki, Talia and Elena Valeriote, Matthew, Jonathon (Kiana), Dominic, and Christina Valeriote; and great-granddaughter, Maya Paulette Magdovitz.

Dad’s funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m.

Law enforcement carries a torch for Special Olympics Daily Republic Staff

FAIRFIELD — Local agencies participated Wednesday and Thursday in the 2021 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Northern California.

They helped raise money and awareness for the children and adults who compete annually in the Special Olympics.

The Torch Run features more than 3,000 law enforcement personnel who carry the Flame of Hope throughout Northern California, according to a press release.

The run in past years would culminate in June at the Special Olympics Summer Games in Davis, but this year the games will be done virtually at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Northern California portion of the fundraiser has earned more than $15 million for local athletes since 1996.

Participating locally were personnel from the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, Benicia Police Department, Vallejo Police Department, the Suisun City Police Department,

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield-Suisun School governing District board voted Thursday to adopt updated employee agreements for several employee groups.

Assistant Superintendent Sheila McCabe’s contract agreement will be extended through June 30, 2023. It was done with much praise from the board for all of her contributions to the district.

“She has been professional in her role (all of them), she represents us well,” said board President Jonathan Richardson.

“She pushes back at times but eventually people come around because they know what she is doing.”

Richardson also noted that over the past 15 years he noticed that she is consistent in her work.

“She is always looking at change and helping us to face that change,” he said.

“As long as we can have her the better,” board member Craig Wilson said.

The only outlier was board member Ana Petero, who disagrees with the district’s Local

Control and Accountability Plan and thus disagreed with the motion of extending the agreements for several employees, including Superintendant Kris Corey, and other reasons she stated.

“It is also because of an aura of oppression in this district,” Petero said.

An agreement with Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Ken Whittemore was also extended through June 30, 2023.

“Mr. Whittemore has been more than a beacon of light to FSUSD, and service to the district,” Richardson said. “I believe he challenges us as well as created a new platform of innovation in the Human Resources department which challenges the status quo

whittemore but helps move our district forward.”

Corey’s agreement was extended through June 30, 2025, after a positive review of her performance over the year.

“We know that leadership positions not always are agreed with by those being led, at times we don’t always achieve all that we set out to do,” board member David C. Isom said. “But I believe she leads with her entire heart on behalf of the children of this district and on behalf of the community.”

‘Major error’ was flagged in 2018 inspection report Tribune Content Agency SURFSIDE, Fla. — In a 2018 report about the Champlain Towers South Condo in Surfside, an engineer flagged a “major error” dating back to the building’s origin where lack of proper drainage on the pool deck had caused “major structural damage,” according to records released late Friday night by town officials in the wake of the tower’s disastrous collapse on Thursday.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the “major error” could have ultimately contributed to the building’s catastrophic collapse. As of Saturday evening the official death toll stood at five, although that was certain to spike with 156 people still unaccounted for. It was feared that scores of bodies remained trapped under tons of rubble.

The report didn’t specifically indicate that the building was at risk of collapse. But a host of concerns were laid out in the October 2018 “Structural Field Survey Report,” produced for the condo

association by engineer Frank Morabito of Morabito Consultants. Morabito wrote that the “main issue” at Champlain Towers was that the pool deck and outdoor planters “laid on a flat structure” preventing water from draining.

The lack of waterproofing was “a systemic issue” that traced back to a flaw “in the development of the original contract documents” 40 years ago, the report said.

Those original documents were prepared by William M. Friedman & Associates Architects, Inc., and Breiterman Jurado & Associates. Representatives for the firms could not be reached for comment Saturday.

The report documented how the years of standing water on the pool deck had severely damaged the concrete structural slabs below. The problem needed to be addressed quickly, Morabito wrote.

“Failure to replace waterproofing in the near future will cause the extent of the concrete deterioration to expand exponentially,” he wrote.

The proper repair would be

an “extremely expensive” undertaking, he warned. “(R)emoval of the concrete topping slab to gain access to the waterproofing membrane will take time, be disruptive and create a major disturbance to the occupants of this condominium structure,” the report said.

The parking garage under the pool deck and planter slabs also “revealed signs of distress/fatigue,” according to Morabito’s report.

“Several sizable (cracks in the concrete) were noted in both the topside of the entrance drive ramp and underside of the pool/ entrance drive/planter slabs, which included instances with exposed, deteriorating rebar,” according to the report.

The estimated cost of repair and restoration work at the building totaled over $15 million, according to 2018 documents from Morabito’s firm.

Morabito noted that previous attempts by other contractors to repair cracks in the garage “were ineffective” and didn’t fix the problem.

Present, future straddled by Gov. Newsom

T

he new state budget now being crafted behind closed doors by Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders exemplifies a basic factor in all political policymaking – the tension between the present and the future.

While those who seek public office often depict themselves as forward-looking visionaries, politics is essentially a short-range business, preoccupied with demands from constituents and interest groups to deal with present-day issues.

Budgets encapsulate the conflict between now and then, especially when economic circumstances provide more current revenue than needed to finance existing services and programs. for new spendDan Walters ingAdvocates increase their pressure for slices of the enlarged pie – arguing, of course, that spending more now will pay dividends in the future. Meanwhile, fiscal watchdogs urge caution about building baseline commitments that could backfire and urge building reserves to cushion future downturns.

When he introduced his revised 2021-22 budget in May, Newsom bragged of a $100 billion surplus, whetting the appetites of the spending advocates. The real discretionary surplus is much lower because of mandatory diversions for public schools, but the Legislature’s spending-oriented budget assumes that future revenues will be higher than the governor’s projections.

Oddly, the higher revenue estimates come from the Legislature’s budget analyst, Gabe Petek, who also told lawmakers that they should set aside more money in “rainy day” reserves to offset future declines.

The political tension between the present and the future is not confined to budgets, as illustrated by several other current issues, two being the state’s housing crisis and the everpresent danger of wildfire catastrophes.

After several years of devastating wildfires, Newsom has pledged to spend more on making the state more prepared and more resilient.

Last year, however, he vetoed a bill aimed at discouraging housing in the “wildland-urban interface” where fires are most likely, or at least imposing new resilience standards on construction within those zones.

“Wildfire resilience must become a more consistent part of land use and development decisions,” Newsom wrote in vetoing Senate Bill 182. “However, it must be done while meeting our housing needs.”

It was a classic political straddle, and one of several that Newsom has employed to bridge the gap between current political pressures and promises of a brighter future.

Two others involve his pledge to wean California from fossil fuels as the state’s contribution to the war on climate change, which he and others depict as an existential crisis.

Taking him at his word, environmental activists have been pressing Newsom to ban fracking, the technique for extracting more oil from underground deposits, as a step toward shutting down the state’s considerable oil industry.

Newsom has taken some symbolic steps in that direction but has also asked the Legislature to pass an anti-fracking bill, no doubt aware that countervailing pressure from the oil industry and unions that represent workers in oil fields and refineries makes such legislation highly unlikely.

Meanwhile, Newsom has also pledged to electrify and decarbonize California with millions of new battery-powered vehicles and a total conversion of its power supply from natural gas-fired generators to nonpolluting wind and solar.

However, as heat waves overwhelmed California’s power grid last summer, forcing some brief blackouts, Newsom quickly declared that he would not tolerate any repeats and his Public Utilities Commission ordered utilities to acquire more backup supplies, some being battery banks but others being gaspowered plants.

Clearly, the governor fears the political fallout from repeat blackouts, even if avoiding them means relying more on the gas-fired generators he considers to be environmental villains.

Politics being what they are, the future often plays second fiddle to the present.

Supervisors display need for DEI training It was disappointing but unsurprising to watch the discussion of DEI training, something that seemingly should be such an easy lift.

It’s astonishing that elected officials can have so little knowledge of this topic even as the country faces a reckoning.

Ludicrous comments about critical race theory, something the vast majority of its detractors do not understand (hint: It is not taught in elementary, middle or high school.

Nor is it taught in college), comments like “I don’t want one person’s perspective on history,” is so counterfactual to how history is taught it is astonishing to actually hear it vocalized.

Elected officials not responding at all to comments about Marxism and other terms that actually mean things, allowing callers to declare that grappling with equity is anti-Western in perspective or that all white people are racist is unconscionable.

It is so distressing to watch people elected to represent the entire county be so comfortable in their lack of knowledge, so secure in their biases and so intractable in their perspective.

Comments like this: “I was born this color,” said Supervisor John Vasquez, the only supervisor of color.

He said he had been “trained every God-damned day,” but would not

allow the color of his skin to define his life. “I resent someone telling me who I am,” he said.

This is a demonstration that merely being a person of color does not insulate the need for training.

It also highlights at best a surfacelevel understanding of how systemic racism and inequity works, and at worst, indifference.

This is particularly disturbing given that Vasquez co-chairs the equity committee – an astonishing fact.

It’s embarrassing to see this on display and exhausting to think about just how far behind this county and its elected officials are.

Nonetheless, we stand on the shoulders of giants and so we will continue to push and move this county forward.

BSA Scouting for girls: Scout me in!

My dad was a BSA Scout and became an Eagle Scout. He would always tell us stories about going on camping trips, and cautionary tales about things gone wrong.

One time, he and his troop were making pasta for dinner and there were ants in the parmesan cheese.

His friend knew there were ants but didn’t tell anyone until everyone had eaten it. No one died, but his best friend had a stomachache for a while.

I thought Scouting would just be camping and talking with other girls and playing games. I discovered that I can explore career paths that I might like. Also, there isn’t just Scouting, there are also Sea Scouts, Venturing and Explorer Scouts (you can explore aviation and emergency response careers). We’ll go on troop outings and there are things that I thought I would never get to do.

I joined during the time of this pandemic to try Scouting and do something outside the house. We met in person outside for a while, all in masks and socially distanced. All the girls were so nice and immediately made me feel like I was part of their group. Even while doing some of the hard things, like the Physical Fitness Merit Badge, everyone supported each other and the parents encouraged us to keep going through both of our 1-mile runs.

I’m getting ready to go to summer camp for a week, and I will be working on merit badges for weather, theater, astronomy, communications and woodworking. I’m really excited to see what it’s like, and many of the things are ones that I would never do by myself (like theater), but my troop members are doing it with me, which makes me feel way more comfortable.

It is ridiculous for a soul to live many lives and always be re-born as the same race, national origin, sex and religion, and all indications from past life regressions indicate that is not the case.

If everybody believed and acted that way, there would be very little violent crime and wars, and everybody would live in peace and harmony.

Biden aims to keep infrastructure deal alive Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden sought to hold together a $579 billion bipartisan infrastructure agreement, saying he hadn’t intended to issue a veto threat by linking it to another spending bill, a position that alarmed Republican senators who had made the deal.

Biden said in a state-

ment Saturday that his comments “created the impression that I was issuing a veto threat on the very plan I had just agreed to, which was certainly not my intent.”

The president plans to begin traveling the country on Tuesday to promote the $579 billion bipartisan infrastructure agreement, with his first stop in Wis-

consin, a White House official said. The goal is to build public support not only for the deal but for the social-spending and tax increases Democrats hope to include in the second piece of legislation, which would include elements of his American Families Plan.

“To be clear: our bipartisan agreement does not

preclude Republicans from attempting to defeat my Families Plan; likewise, they should have no objections to my devoted efforts to pass that Families Plan and other proposals in tandem,” Biden said in the statement. “We will let the American people – and the Congress – decide.”

The president and a bipartisan group of 10 sen-

ators announced Thursday they had reached an agreement on new infrastructure spending. Biden suggested at the time that his signature on the final infrastructure bill was contingent on Congress also passing the much larger tax and social spending measure that Democrats are preparing.

“If only one comes to

me, I’m not – and if this is the only thing that comes to me, I’m not signing it. It’s in tandem,” Biden said Thursday.

Republican senators, including some who had been part of the negotiations to make the deal, quickly expressed misgivings, saying that Biden’s insistence on linking the two bills had not been part of their agreement.

the time the property went up for sale. She remembers Ruth Monez as a private and elegant woman with a “great eye for antiques.”

Manuel and Elma Monez built the Ice House building in the 1930s.

Their son, Chet Monez, owned the Ford dealership in Fairfield.

The property was one of two Suisun Valley-centric properties that went on the market at about the same time. Bosco was the broker for both.

The other property is 15 acres along the north side of Mankas Corner, with a short jaunt along Clayton Road, and west of Gordon Valley Road.

It is the site of the fivebedroom Victorian-style home built by J.C. Wolfskill in 1885. The Wolfskill family is one of the earliest pioneering families in Solano County and the Suisun Valley.

Chuck Wagner, the patriarch of the Caymu s - S u i su n w i ne brand, purchased it in December 2019.

In addition to the Wolfskill home, which came to be known as the Armstrong House, the property also includes a 2,800-square-foot, threebedroom, two-bath ranch house, and some orchards.

Wagner could not be reached about what plans he might have for the property.

“After I went through this, I realized I didn’t want anyone else dealing with this. Many people do not have the knowledge to understand what they need to do in this situation,” she said.

Hernandez decided that the best way to help would be to organize pop-up clinics around Solano County to get as many people vaccinated as possible.

“So many people do not have the right information,” she said.

“This way if we have a big emergency we can still by offering the church’s buildings and property for a drive-through food drive and pop-up clinic.

He noted that misinformation is a huge problem in the Black and brown communities.

“A lot of people do not have the right information,” he said.

Morris and his wife both got the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine right before its use was temporarily halted after a small number of people developed a rare blood clot issue.

“We were terrified,” Morris said. “But other than some fatigue and nausea, it was really nothing. We both are fine.”

People got scared after that and became reluctant to get the vaccine, but Morris said he thought with a little motivation, that might change.

“So we offered free food,” he said.

The church provided drive-up visitors with two bags and two boxes of food. It came out to about 1,700 pounds of food,

Morris said he hopes that clinics like this will help restore things back to normal by returning stability and trust.

The clinic offered all three types of vaccines so people could choose what they wanted. After the shot, they waited

Those who didn’t select the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will have an opportunity for a followup shot in either three or four weeks, depending on whether they selected the Pfizer-BioNTech or the Moderna twodose vaccine.

“It will be good to be able to see people’s faces again,” Morris said.

FAIRFIELD — Since finishing his playing days, Myles King has wanted to be a high school football head coach and the Rodriguez High graduate returned to his hometown hoping to make it happen.

King had his dream come true when he was named the newest head coach of the Mustangs earlier this month, the 12th head coach in the 20 years the school’s been open.

While no Rodriguez head coach has lasted more than three years, King, who’s been the RHS junior varsity coach the last two seasons and with the program for three, is a logical choice to take over.

“Myles was our only candidate,” said Tracy Cordes, Rodriguez athletic director. “Myles has been a part of our program for a while now and he has grown a lot as a coach.

He is ready to take on our football program and he is determined to make our program the best it can be for our student athletes.”

When asked how it felt to be the new Rodriguez football coach, King gave thanks, starting at the top.

“First off, I would like to thank God,” he said. “I feel honored, blessed and excited. I’m very thankful to the administration and the athletic department for trusting in me with the future of our football program. I’m really happy that I have a family that truly supports me and my passion for football, and has supported me on my journey the whole way. It’s what gives me the strength to go out and help develop our community’s youth into better people every day.”

And it’s even more meaningful to be coaching where he had so much success himself, playing a

“This job means everything to me,” King said.

“It’s always been my dream to return back to the community that raised me, and helped shape me into the man that I am today. There’s no other high school in the country that I’d rather be at. I’m really proud to be from here and to be working here. This truly is a unique and special place.”

After finishing at Rodriguez, King helped lead Solano Community College to two Bay Valley Conference championships and went on to play for Graceland University, an NAIA school in Lamoni, Iowa.

King sees having played at so many different

levels – even before high school – as an advantage.

“I’ve been playing football since I was 9 years old, first with the Solano Warriors, then on to Rod playing at championship levels the whole way through,” King said.

“Also playing at Solano College and winning the Bay Valley conference two years in a row, then earning a scholarship to Graceland University where I was the (Heart of America Athletic Conference) MVP and NAIA All-American quarterback. I’ve seen three different levels of championship football and how to get there. I know it’s not easy and everything is to be earned, but I am definitely up for the challenge and will not take any shortcuts.”

Following his graduation from Graceland, King came back to Fairfield where he was an assistant JV coach at Armijo

in 2016 before serving as head JV coach in 2017 with the then Indians going 4-5 with two losses by a combined eight points.

King made his way to Rodriguez where he served as a varsity assistant in 2018 and the Junior Mustangs 10-U head coach. He became head JV coach in 2019 and went 9-5-1 over the last two seasons, including 3-1-1 in the recent abbreviated spring campaign.

“The previous coaching positions helped shape me, and prepared me for this opportunity by learning from previous head coaches before me, watching them closely, and just observing the program as a whole every step of the way,” King said.

“Being the JV head coach at Rodriguez for the last two years, I feel has been the biggest advantage for me in preparing for this year – having already built great relationships with the student athletes and their parents.”

King replaces one-year coach Stevie Johnson, another former Mustang quarterback, who came back to the school after retiring from the NFL and led the team during the pandemic-delayed spring 2021 season, going 2-3.

“Stevie Johnson has done a great job with our guys,” Cordes said. “Under his coaching the program has shown improvements.

He handled a difficult time during the pandemic, facing a lot of challenges, and led the team with a lot of successes. Being from San Diego and away from his family so often, made it difficult for him and he felt that the program needs a leader that can be present and invest the time needed to build a great program.

VACAVILLE — Robyn Stevens and Nick Christie left no doubt with convincing victories in their respective women’s and men’s 20-kilometer race walking events at the United States Olympic Track and Field Trials in Springfield, Oregon, Saturday.

But now t he waiting begins. Their winning times – 1 hour, 35.13 minutes for Stevens and 1:30.48 for Christie – didn’t meet the Olympic Standards of 1:31.00 for women and 1:21.00 for men – but they can still be named to the U.S. Olympic team if they are in the top 60 in the world rankings, which will be released on Wednesday.

Stevens was essentially tied for first with Taylor Ewert through one kilometer (4:41) and held a 1-second lead after two (9:13) and three kilometers (13:47) before starting to pull away. The second and fourth kilometers were her fastest (both 4:33) and she wound up defeating runner-up Maria Michta-Coffey (1:39.25) by more than four minutes.

Meanwhile, Christie led the men’s race, which started a minute before the women’s, from the gun, holding a 21-second lead after the first kilometer. His fastest kilometer was his second (4:11) and he wound up topping second-place finisher Daniel Nehnevaj (1:31.59) by a little more than a minute.

FAIRFIELD — It’s a good thing the Fairfield Expos American Legion baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Casper Oilers at Heroes Park in Bozeman, Montana, Saturday.

The Wyoming pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth and had runners of first and second – all with two outs and nobody on base – before reliever Trevor Morse got Cooper Hack to fly out to right to end the 9-7 Expos victory.

The Expos, 34-7 on the season and 5-2 in the first week of their 16-day, fivestate road trip, jumped to an early 5-0 with

three runs in the first inning and one each in the second and third, the latter two on RBI singles

by Aidan Robles and Bryce Dichoso.

The Oilers closed the gap with three runs in the top of the fifth, only to have the Expos get those runs back and more with four runs in the bottom of the inning as Alex Carver and Robles each ripped two-run doubles.

Carver and Robles each finished 3-for-4 with the former driving in two runs, the latter four.

“I plan to run the West Coast offense, mostly out of the pistol,” King said.

“I’ve taken what I’ve learned from my playing days in high school and college, and also just being a football junkie, studying films of Ohio State, Oregon and Stanford (to be) formed into one playbook I created.”

Robles contributed a two-run single with Dichoso and Bozzini also plating runs in the first inning. In the third, Ramirez delivered a two-run single, while Dichoso, Wilde, Bozzini and Robles each had an RBI with Carver and Robles getting two hits in the frame, including a double by the latter.

Solano Town Center Gallery features ‘Texture,’ works of Albert Daily Republic Staff

FAIRFIELD — The Solano Town Center Gallery will unveil its new exhibit, “Texture,” Wednesday.

Fairfield-Suisun Visual Arts Association artists will explore texture, using a variety of materials and media.

Visitors will see a collection of artwork consisting of paintings, photographs, other framed pieces and sculpture, in a variety of media including oil, watercolor, acrylic, glass, paper, pencil, and color and black-and-white photography.

“Texture can mean different things,” said a press release for the show. “The way something feels to physical touch comes immediately to mind, but while some artists might invite people to touch their works, most use special techniques to show visually how something might feel.

“Some ways this might be done are by using paints of varying thicknesses, using specific camera filters, exploring computer techniques in Photoshop, or actually sculpting with materials that have unique textures.”

The gallery is also featuring the work of Meiling Marie Albert.

She has been an artist for 20 years, and particularly enjoys working with acrylics, mixed media and graphite and Prisma colored pencils. Most recently, she has been experimenting with collage design using papers, fabric and ribbons.

Albert admires artists Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent van Gogh, Wayne Theibaud, Camille Claudel as well as her contemporaries, Mira White and Misuk Goltz. Her art has been described as “representational, personal and visually lovely.” She has been a member of the Fairfield-Suisun Visual Arts Association for 15 years.

The “Texture” exhibit will run through Sept. 4 at 1350 Travis Blvd. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

NAPA — BottleRock Napa Valley is offering a series of BottleRock AfterDark shows in Napa, San Francisco, Berkeley and Sacramento, featuring many of the 2021 BottleRock Napa Valley musical artists and other special guests.

These intimate performances, produced by BottleRock Presents, begin Sept. 2 and extend through the Labor Day festival weekend.

Add in the band’s name, EmeryVillains, and there’s even more curiosity.

Hearing their story answers the questions of a group that launched thanks to a fortuitous house painting job.

Scott Holderby, lead vocals and guitarist, was painting the residence of Rhoda Eichelberger, now 88. She broached the topic of music and invited him to hear the songs she and her brother had recorded in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

It was love at first hearing for Holderby, who reached out to friends, now bandmates, Danny White, guitarist and vocalist, and Hank Alva, upright bass and vocals.

“Let’s play it,” Holderby told his fellow musicians.

They were playing the music within a week.

Eichelberger does an occasional guest spot with the band that draws its name from Emeryville, where Eichelberger lives. She also told the band at one point in time, she was called Emery Villa.

She is the band’s major inspiration.

“It’s a gift to have to this material,” Holderby said of Eichelberger’s works.

Holderby describes 1940s western swing as a “little bit of everything.”

Holderby used the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown time to try his hand at writing music, to “get good.”

“He’s being modest,” Alva chimed in on the phone.

They are set to play three 45-minute sets this weekend at the Pioneer Tap Room. Eichelberger may make an appearance.

Alva, who lives in Solano County, found the venue through a neighbor who works with them. Soon, EmeryVillains sat down and played their music for the owners and signed up for the first gig, which was outside.

This show will mark their fourth or fifth time at the venue. Pretty good for a band that is nearing its second anniversary.

Holderby, who works in painting and construction, was about 4 when his grandfather put a guitar in his hand and showed him a chord. He started

on bass in his early teens, putting the guitar aside.

“I did not play guitar until this band,” he said. “Danny showed me some fancy chords.”

Alva began hitting the drums when he was about 7.

“I couldn’t get the coordination on the bass drum,” he said. “Then, I tried guitar and could not do the chords.”

It was on to the bass, and eventually the upright bass.

He’s a graphic designer for wine labels.

White’s mother got him a Fender knockoff when he was 11. Jimi Hendrix and early Led Zepplin tunes were his first songs.

“Then, I heard Eddie Van Halen,” he said. “I was fascinated.”

White arrived in California and began to play with various bands, including Mordred. Holderby is also a member of the heavy metal band, which releases “The Dark Parade” on July 23.

Holderby and Alva went to high school together.

The EmeryVillains don full western wear for their gigs. Dancing is welcome.

The trio has quite a sense of humor.

“My bandmates are very handsome,” Alva said.

“If not for Facebook, we would forget or own gigs,” White said.

Lucky Penny seeks scripts for ‘North Bay New Plays’ Daily Republic Staff

NAPA — Lucky Penny Productions will present an all-new slate of new short plays in October in a production titled “North Bay New Plays.”

The submission period for authors closes July 31.

Lucky Penny presented a program of eight 10-minute plays known as the “8 x 10 Festival” over five theater seasons beginning in 2012-13.

The new “North Bay New Plays” also will

feature new and original stage plays of 10 minutes or less but this time they must be written by North Bay authors only, residing in Napa, Sonoma, Solano or Marin counties.

Guidelines for authors will be found at www. luckypennynapa.com.

The author whose play is voted as the “People’s Choice” will win a $250 honorarium.

Performances are Oct. 15-21 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center.

The idea for this show

began when Holmes and Ribaud decided to create a larger-than-life-size Cameraman using Holmes’ camera collection and Ribaud’s engineering talents.

The hundreds of cameras date from the 1920s to yesterday, from a 4x5 view camera to plastic toy cameras and everything in between.

The artists responded to the beauty of each camera design. A red box camera becomes the heart,

two 1940s film strip projectors become the eyes, and a series of Instamatic cameras become the spine.

Recorded shutter sounds create a sonic atmosphere and camera cases from Cameraman’s best friend, Cameradog.

This varies depending on the time of the year, latitude and other factors, but between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the sun’s rays are particularly intense. Consider jogging or golfing at alternative daytime hours. n Use appropriate sunscreen.

A sun protection factor of at least 15 is minimally necessary. Apply before sun exposure and in adequate quantity, with re-application every two hours. I also favor sunprotective lip balms. n Teach by example. The damage may be largely done to aging baby boomers, but we can model UV mitigating behaviors for the benefit of future generations. n Seek evaluation of your skin.

This typically begins with an evaluation by your primary care provider. Skin cancer cases do sometimes evade detection at the initial screening level, which is why a dermatology consultation often makes excellent sense.

I recall seeing Hollywood celebrities in my youth, sporting what we called a “healthy tan.” To be sure, sun exposure improves subjective well-being and may improve our synthesis of vitamin D. Excess exposure to UV light, however, comes at a cost throughout the year.

This is a typical thing for parents to do to their children, and it is not fair to them. But the good news is that you are so aware of it and you want to stop.

emotionally healthy for your children, because so much of good parenting comes from modeling good behaviors. That is not to make you feel guilty or overwhelmed. In fact, you could say to your son that his mom sometimes feels insecure, but she wants to change and is seeking the help of a professional in order to do that.

Being an open-minded person willing to look at yourself, admit your mistakes, and say you need help is a wonderful example to set for your children. Try not to be so hard on yourself. You sound wonderful, and so does your son.

ummer has arrived, and with it, long sunny days, and the opportunity to spend more time outdoors. While outdoor physical activity is encouraged, let’s review a few things to keep you safe and fit in the heat.

Most adults should aim for 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise or 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise each week. It doesn’t have to be done all at one time – you can break it up into three 25-minute sessions of vigorous activity (breathless yet able to speak a few words at a time) or five 30-minute sessions of moderate activity (breathing hard yet able to carry on a conversation). You should also add in two sessions of strength training per week.

Children ages 6 to 17 should aim for 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day with strength and aerobic exercises.

While heat and humidity can elevate the body temperature during exercise, our bodies will adapt to heat stress over a few weeks. Heat illness is preventable.

Heat-related illness may start as mild symptoms such as fatigue, headache or muscle cramps but if not recognized and treated can lead to a coma, or even death. Risk factors for

developing heat illness include a sedentary lifestyle, lack of acclimatization, previous episodes of heat illness and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes or sickle cell. Children and older adults may be more susceptible to heat illness along with those who drink alcohol or take certain medications.

Here are some strategies to help decrease your risk of heatrelated illness: n Monitor environmental conditions. Check the weather report online for the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and try to schedule exercise accordingly. The WBGT is a measure of heat stress and is helpful when deciding if you should delay or cancel outdoor activities. n Start slow and gradually increase the duration and intensity of exercise. It takes many days for our bodies to adapt to heat, so start with a short, moderate activity and increase slowly over one to two weeks. n Adjust workout to limit stress.

Options include decreasing intensity or duration of activity, taking more frequent breaks or moving to the shade.

Exercise in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. n Prevent dehydration. During long bouts of exercise (longer than 60 minutes), drink fluids and electrolytes at regular intervals (every 15 to 20 minutes). Have a hydra-

tion plan by knowing where you can refill your water. n Wear appropriate clothing and sun protection. Light-colored, loosefitting and open fabrics provide evaporation and cooling. Opt for a water-based sunscreen over oil or gel and reapply every two hours. n Know the early signs of heatrelated illness. If you or a friend are experiencing fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness or nausea, immediately find a cool place to rest. n Exercise has countless proven health benefits. It can make you live longer, decrease your risk of certain cancers and improve brain function.

Listen to your body when exercising in the heat. Start slow and gradually increase over several days. If you experience any of the early symptoms of heat illness including fatigue, muscle cramps, headache, nausea or dizziness, stop exercising and find a place to cool down. Call 911 if you have confusion, a change in mental status, loss of consciousness or a body temperature greater than 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Air Force re-addresses women’s hair standard

ARLINGTON, Va. — Building on women’s hair updates announced in February 2021, the Air Force will further revise Air Force Instruction 36-2903 to address differences in hair density and texture.

Previously, hair worn in a bun, braid, ponytail or equivalent could not extend beyond the width of the head. Beginning June 25, when hair is secured behind the head, the hair may extend six inches to the left and to the right and six inches protruding from the point where the hair is gathered.

The 12-inch total width must allow for proper wear of headgear.

“Change doesn’t happen overnight, and sometimes it takes another iteration to arrive at the best solution,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. “This updated guidance represents meaningful progress. The feedback we received from our airmen highlighted the need to reevaluate the policy and ultimately, make it more inclusive.”

The change addresses feedback received since the previous guidance was originally published. Specifically, women voiced concerns over difficulty related to securing hair in a manner that does not extend beyond the head.

“In developing policy we try to address all angles and perspectives, but sometimes we have a blind spot,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “The feedback we received highlighted the need to reevaluate the policy to make it even more inclusive.”

Initial changes to women’s hair standards were the result of various recommendations issued last fall by the Air Force uniform board. The group of 19 airmen included a diverse group of men and women with officers and enlisted members from various ethnic and occupational backgrounds across major commands and headquarters directories.

“Whether we’re talking about hair, uniforms or forums for sharing ideas, an approach that embraces diversity and fosters an inclusive environment is critical to ensuring our talented, dedicated airmen stay with us on this journey,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass.

Members must adhere to current occupational safety, fire and health guidance, and mishap prevention procedures emphasizing when and how to mitigate the potential for injury from hair of varying lengths and styles around machinery, equipment, power transmission apparatus or moving parts.

Airmen are encouraged to reach out to their safety office for assistance in analyzing any potential hazards, as applicable.

At this time, guardians will adhere to the grooming standards of the U.S. Air Force until the U.S. Space Force develops its own policy.

Additional ideas generated from the uniform board are still under consideration for policy change and updates will be released as they become available.

60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — “Spacious” is not a word used to describe the center accessory compartment of a KC-10 Extender.

The 1-foot wide, 6-feet long workspace isn’t for the claustrophobic and, coupled with toxic substances like fuel that can leak into other compartments of the aircraft, can be dangerous. The space can make short work of respirator filters, proving an ever-present challenge for those working in it.

Luckily, the 60th and 349th Maintenance Squadrons at Travis Air Force Base have a failsafe: fuel tank extraction exercises.

The annual exercise, consisting of calling emergency services, evacuating affected personnel from an aircraft and beginning resuscitation protocol, combines with a series of computer-based trainings to turn what would otherwise be a frantic struggle to save an airman trapped inside a remote area of an aircraft into a precise execution of procedure to ensure their safety.

“There’s definitely that instinct of wanting to be gung-ho and help an airman who’s stuck in a desperate situation,” said Abraham Bernardo, 60th MXS fuels systems mechanic and one of the exercise’s most recent participants. “But when that instinct results in not just one trapped airman, but two, we’re doubly screwed. The extraction exercise works to install that muscle memory in our maintainers so that when a situation potentially does happen, we’re ready to go with the correct procedures.”

It’s a testament to the Air Force’s commitment to their people, he added.

It’s in that same vein that the Air Force not only has protocol in place for would-be rescuers, but those who could be on the receiving end of that

“When I was deployed, there was a moment when I began to feel lightheaded and queasy,” he recalled. “When you’re in the middle of a job, it can be hard to take a moment and check on how you’re feeling, but in addition to this training, we’re also taught how to identify those tell-tale signs. It can be a fine line between catching yourself and passing out, so that training can be a game-changer.”

Bernardo, too, has seen his fair share of close-calls.

“Above all, communication is key,” he said.

“Whether that’s communication to emergency services or communication with your own team.

“At the end of the day, we don’t perform this training because we

think it’s fun,” he said.

“We do it because there have been fatalities in the past and we have been caught unprepared in the past. We do this training because on our watch, there won’t be another.

by Capt. (Dr.) Julian Moreno, 60th Dental Squadron general dentist, aimed to both reduce the stigma that members of the LGBTQ+ community sometimes face and normalize their service; something that has been seen as controversial in years past.

“Being a member of the community – being a gay man myself – I’ve luckily dodged the physical attacks that some people I know have faced, but I’ve nonetheless faced a lot of adversity,” Moreno said. “Being catcalled on the street, being called the f-word – all these things are unfortunately all too common amongst people in the LGBTQ+ community. It’s our hope that by being here and being queer–being ourselves–that it’ll open a lot

It can lead to depression and even suicidal ideation, and airmen

dealing with these things, needlessly too, don’t bring that same authentic self to the work they do.”

With the Air Force promoting innovation within its ranks, Moreno believes that service members being more accepting of their LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters in arms could not only increase the quality of life for everyone serving, but promote mission readiness as well.

“When you’re made to feel like you need to

hide, you tend to hide other things as well,” he said. “Thoughts, emotions, ideas. These can all be thrown to the wayside just by that queer service member feeling side-lined in an effort to not be outed.

Diversity of thought and of people can be a powerful tool in generating positive conversations and executing the Air Force’s mission, but we need to not only allow everyone a seat at the table, but also invite them to it and nurture an environment in which everyone feels valued and respected there.”

For Moreno, nurturing that environment comes down to a simple request to all airmen: Be open-minded.

“It costs nothing to be empathetic–everyone can do it,” he said.

“Whether you’re a commander or just an airman out grabbing something from the dining facility, being open-minded to the fact that not everyone is going to be just like you and that’s something to be celebrated instead of fearful of would go far in moving the culture in a positive direction. The senior Greek Orthodox priests reached a verdict on Wednesday afternoon: a 37-year-old priest, who was arrested years earlier for allegedly hiding cocaine under his religious garb, should be defrocked.

But as the members of the religious court informed the priest of their decision, he suddenly stood up, pulled out two bottles of acid and lunged at the panel, allegedly dousing them in caustic liquid, local news reported.

“My first thought was that it was holy water,” one of the bishops said, according to Greek newspaper Ta Nea. “I quickly realized what was flying . . . was a caustic liquid.”

Police say seven priests, two lawyers, one guard and one secretary were injured in the attack. Law enforcement has not for-

mally identified the priest.

Police captured the priest before he could escape. They arrested him and he remains in custody, according to the Athens News Agency. It is unclear whether he has been formally charged.

“The attack with vitriol . . . is a disgusting act. I wish them a speedy recovery and a good return to their duties,” Niki Kerameus, Greece’s minister of education and religious affairs, tweeted in Greek.

The priest allegedly had a history of violent behavior, Ta Nea reported. In 2015, he was arrested after he allegedly tried to attack a middle-aged woman with a stick and harassed her outside her home.

He was arrested again in 2018 after police said he hid 1.8 grams of cocaine under his cassock, local news reported at the time of the incident.
