FAIR F IELD — The state Division of Occupational Safety and Health eased its Covid-19 workplace restrictions Thursday to come in line with the governor’s order for the general public. Gov. Gavin Newsom also issued an executive order expediting the implementation of those changes. “What they are basically doing is that they are mirroring what the . . . governor permits for the general public,” Dr. Bela Matyas, the Solano County public health
officer, said in a phone interview Thursday. Anyone who works outside will no longer be required to wear a face covering, and indoor employees who are fully vaccinated also are freed from the restriction. Matyas said it will be up to the individual business to decide what level of proof it will require from their employees about vaccinations. d ista ncS ocia l ing is no longer required anywhere. The Cal-OSHA order, however, allows for an employee to request an N-95 mask, and the See Covid, Page A9

FAIR F IELD — Scorching temperatures are sending the greater Bay Area under an air pollution alert for the second straight day as Solano County is expected to climb around triple digits again Friday. Fairfield hit a blistering 110 degrees Thursday, and should slowly cool to 99 Friday and 93 Saturday. The 110 mark could be a record high for June 17: National Weather Service, Sacramento, data
show a previous high of 106 in 1981. Vacaville was just a tad cooler at 108. It’s predicted to stay in the 100s Friday at 105, with some cooling Saturday at 98 degrees. Local libraries are being suggested as cooling stations for those in need. PG&E also stated there are no immediate plans for power shutoffs to prevent wildfires because of the excessive heat, but plans can change quickly if the strength of local See Alert, Page A9

will be dedicated to the memory of longtime Solano County auctioneer Joe Gates, who died earlier this year after contracting Covid-19. Partida said the pandemic did give her an opportunity to get closer with her 1,341-pound friend. She started in 4-H a few years back by seeing a flyer about it at school. “I just decided to try it,” she said. “I started with goats and moved all the way up to steers. This year I’ve really had more time to be with him.” See Fair, Page A9

VALLEJO — Buddy the steer was a bit aggravated prior to Thursday’s Solano County Fair Livestock Show. His 16-year-old handler Maritza Partida simply stared into his eyes and his anger immediately subsided. “I just try and get him to look at me and listen to me because there is a lot of noise all-around,” said Partida, representing Dixon Ridge 4-H. Asked if she is a “steer whis-
perer,” Partida just laughed with a big smile and said, “I wish.” Partida was one of six 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America youth participating this year with their beef cattle. There were many more participants in poultry (chickens, quail and turkeys), rabbits, swine, goats and sheep with judging taking place inside and outside the livestock center. The auction will follow online this year because of Covid-19 protocols. Bidding takes place Friday and Saturday. Bidders can sign up at scfair.com/livestock. The auction
FAIRFIELD — The principles and rules of redistricting – including “maintaining communities of interest” – was presented Thursday to the Solano County Redistricting Advisory Committee. Redistricting is completed every 10 years with the completion of each new federal census. It sets the district boundaries out of which county representatives are elected. While the public will have opportunities to comment on redistricting, the final decision belongs to the Board of Supervisors, which, in essence, will decide the geographic, population makeup and political spheres of the members’ districts.
