Manchin says he won’t back partisan voting rights bill Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Manchin said Sunday he won’t support the For the People Act passed by House Democrats, potentially dooming the legislation. He also said he wouldn’t support ending the filibuster rule. Without Manchin’s support, the sweeping voting reform legislation – approved by the House in March with no Republican support, in response to efforts by GOP lawmakers in many states to tighten voting standards – seems set to fail in the evenly-divided Senate and may not be brought for a vote. T he D emo c r at announced his position in an op-ed for the Charleston Ga zet te -M a i l in his home state of West Virginia. “I believe that partisan voting legislation

Netanyahu accuses rival of ‘fraud’ as political tensions spike in Israel Tribune Content Agency TEL AVIV, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unleashed a harsh verbal attack Sunday against his potential replacement, rightist rival Naftali Bennett, declaring it would constitute the “greatest election fraud” in Israel’s history if his own reign as the country’s longest-serving leader were ended.
With a parliamentary vote of confidence in a prospective new Israeli government to take place as early as Wednesday, Bennett, 49, retorted that it was time for the 71-year-old prime minister, his onetime mentor, to “let go and allow Israel to move forward.” In the wake of four inconclusive national elections, political See Israel, Page A7

The report also suggests that center staff needs “additional training in understanding the statutory requirements of a (family justice center), discrimination issues, and trauma-informed care,” and the manager’s role with regard to “county employees and employees of on-site partners” needs to be more clearly defined. As wildfires decimate giant sequoia, California faces unprecedented loss

LOS ANGELES — When wildfire tore through giant sequoia groves in the Sierra Nevada last year, researchers estimated hundreds of the towering trees – maybe 1,000 – were killed. Now, almost nine months later, experts have revised that figure tenfold. A new draft report puts the toll at 7,500 to 10,600 trees – 10% to 14% of the world’s natural population.

FA I R F I EL D — T he 2020-21 Solano County civil grand jury concluded that the Solano Family Justice Center “is not meeting” its mission, and stated the Board of Supervisors should initiate a study to determine if the center should be transferred from the control of the District Attorney’s Office to the Department of Health and Social Services. The grand jury stated that the justice center “is not performing as a (one-stop shop) for victims, adding stress to an already stressful situation.” The report also noted that the justice center needs to find a way
to be financially stable. The justice center director and the district attorney disagree with much of the grand jury’s report. In fact, of the nine findings issued in the report released June 1 by the Solano County Superior Court, the District Attor- ABRAMS ney’s Office and the justice center only agreed in full with two points, and partially on two others. The justice center “has always worked to ensure the essential services are rendered, such as domestic violence advocacy, court accompaniment, restraining orders, crisis intervention, safety planning and basic needs

“The whole thing is surprising and devastating and depressing,” said Christy Bringham, chief of resources management and science at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and lead author of the report. The finding startled scientists because sequoias are adapted to thrive in fire, with bark that’s up to 2 feet thick, branches that reach above flames and cones that release seeds when See Sequoia, Page A7
