Solano has received 8% of mail-in ballots Todd R. Hansen THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — About 8% of Solano County’s 260,286 registered voters have sent in their mail-in ballots as of Tuesday – one week ahead of the June 7 primary election, the Registrar of Voters Office reported. John Gardner, the assistant registrar of voters, said as of Tuesday the Elections Office has received Solano Votes 20,082 mail-in ballots, about 7.71%. The ballots were sent out to all registered voters. That is down from recent elections. Eligible residents can still register up to and including June 7, though their ballots will be considered provisional and counted after the main tally is completed. Mail-in ballots that are postmarked by June 7 will be accepted through June 14, Gardner said. Voters, however, do not have to use the mail-in ballots sent to them and instead may choose to go to a poll location to cast their votes. The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Election Day. Voters may drop off their mail-in ballots at the polling sites or at a number of drop-off locations through Election Day. That includes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Gardner said.

FAIRFIELD — The voice of Col. Corey A. Simmons, commander of the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis Air Force Base, cracked several times during his speech at the Memorial Day commemoration at the Solano County War Memorial in downtown Fairfield. Simmons is responsible for the combined efforts of all Andy Anderson salutes during a Memorial Day ceremony at the Solano County War Memorial wing operations and support in downtown Fairfield, Monday. activities associated with the

worldwide air mobility mission at the base. He has given orders in the past that he knew might mean the death of someone. “I’ve seen the strongest of soldiers salute their buddies for the last time,” he said in his speech. Simmons also spoke of the history of the day’s observances. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. The See Travis, Page A8

SUISUN CITY — Vacaville’s Rudy Recile stands alone as the only Republican seeking the 8th Congressional District seat. The district is new but has a familiar figure who has dominated regional politics for a long time – Rep. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove. Oddly enough, Recile attended Tuesday night’s candidates forum for Democrats seeking the 8th District seat, and Garamendi did not. He told organizers he would be out of the country. Edwin Rutsch had hoped to join the event, held at the Marina Lounge in Suisun City, online, but that option was not available for this forum. Garamendi’s absence left him open to criticism that he does not fit the profile of a new district that has a minority majority, with whites representing just 30% of the population. The fact Walnut Grove is outside the district was not lost on the others, either, though the law only requires that he live in California and not the actual district. As far as Christopher Riley is concerned, Garamendi has been out of touch for the entire 12 years he has served in Congress, and pointed to the lack of gun control and the recent shooting in Texas as a stark example. TEXAS MASS SCHOOL SHOOTING

Funerals begin for Uvalde’s 21 victims Tribune Content Agency UVALDE, Texas — A week after the school shooting that killed 19 students and two teachers, this small town is preparing for the first of many funerals – a marathon of grief. This week, services are planned for 11 children and teacher Irma Garcia. The first is for Amerie Jo Garza, 10, who was buried Tuesday in a casket painted and shrink-wrapped with customized art of her favorite things, said designer Trey Ganem. Amerie Jo’s family described her in her WEATHER 89 | 58 Sunny. Five-day forecast on B10.

obituary as an avid swimmer who aspired to become an art teacher, “a kind, caring, blunt, loving, sweet, sassy and of course funny little diva who ‘hated dresses,’” loved Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks Vanilla Bean Crème Frappuccinos. Her family wrote that Amerie Jo was “a protector of her [3-year-old] brother and as we now know her classmates” – an allusion to reports that she and other children tried to call 911 as the shooter attacked their class at Robb Elementary School. Ganem’s company, SoulShine Industries, designed and donated all
