VACAVILLE — Veteran and veterans advocate Jeff Jewell participated five years ago in the Take the Rock veterans swim challenge in the chilly Bay Area waters near Alcatraz. When he finished the swim, a family member of a fallen soldier approached him and wanted to know what Jewell was going to do next. “I’m going to keep exercising and swimming,” he told the woman. “Will you walk for my son?” she asked. The Vacaville resident has since then dedicated his exercising, be it swimming or walking, to a fallen member of the United States military. Jewell, 66, posts his picture, and that of the soldier, on his Facebook page. Jewell shares the background of the soldier. A recent post shows Jewell in the

FAIRFIELD — Air quality officials issued the first smog alert of the season Sunday that’s effective Monday for southwestern Solano County and the greater Bay Area region. The alert coincides with a warning about excessive heat that’s in place Monday and Tuesday for the Bay Area and Sacramento regions and a separate air pollution warning for much of eastern Solano County. Air quality is expected to be unhealthy across the vast majority of Solano County. Light winds and hot temperatures, along with vehicle exhaust, are creating elevated concentrations of ozone, more commonly known as smog. “As traffic bounces back to prepandemic levels, hot temperatures and tailpipe exhaust are expected to cause unhealthy air quality this holiday weekend,” Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, said in a press release. “This alert highlights the need to reduce our driving and keep air quality healthy by finding alternatives to driving alone, such as taking transit or walking or biking.” Air pollution warnings, called Spare the Air alerts, are issued when ozone pollution is projected to reach unhealthy levels. That’s the case Monday in the air district’s Eastern Zone, which includes much of western Solano County – Fairfield, Suisun City and Benicia – but excludes Vallejo, which is in the
