FA IR F I E LD — Solano County is fewer than 400 individuals away from reaching its initial goal of vaccinating 225,000 residents who are 16 or older, and about 3,800 away from having fully vaccinated half of that population. The county Public H e a lt h D iv i s io n reported Thursday it has administered at least one coronavirus vaccination shot to 224,610 residents, 390 shy of the target goal, with 172,374 residents having been fully vaccinated. Based on the 16-andover population of 352,437,

the county will reach the 50% mark for full vaccination with 3,844 more individuals 16 or older getting their second shots or a Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccination. About 64% of the 16-and-over population has received at least one shot, the county reported. But the county is shifting its focus to include the entire population that is 12 or older – another 22,975 individuals, of whom 5,156 have received a single shot. “We have not adjusted the (online) dashboard to reflect the 12-and-up (group) . . . but we figured See Orange, Page A12

ROCKVILLE — Solano Community College turned to a sharply pre-produced video commencement ceremony Thursday night to honor the Class of 2021, the second straight year it was necessary to hold a virtual event with the ongoing pandemic. Graduates, families, administrators and faculty gathered together in their own homes throughout the county and beyond to celebrate a special achievement accomplished during a stressful worldwide pandemic. It was the 75th graduating class and a school year few will ever forget.

“The pandemic has lasted much longer than we expected and we did what we had to do to be patient and creative,” said Celia Esposito-Noy, superintendent and president of the college district, in her opening remarks. “Thank you for continuing your education and being patient with us. We did our best to deliver instruction and services during these difficult times.” Short messages were shared by Esposito-Noy; Denis Honeychurch, president of the Solano College governing board; LaNae Jaimez, Screengrab Academic Senate president; Alma Rodriguez, associate diversity affairs Kelvin Chan, student trustee; senator, speaks during the online 2021 Solano and Diversity Affairs Senator Community College graduation ceremony, See SCC, Page A12 Thursday.

SAN JOSE — The Valley Transportation Authority maintenance worker who fatally shot nine co-workers and then himself at a light rail yard Wednesday morning was a “highly disgruntled” employee who came to the facility armed with 32 illegal high-capacity magazines, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s

The gunman in the San Francisco Bay Area’s deadliest mass shooting, identified as Samuel James Cassidy, 57, of San Jose, opened fire upon coworkers in two buildings at about 6:34 a.m. Wednesday, and took his own life as law enforcement officers closed in, authorities said. California to pay $116.5M to those who get vaccinations Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — In the latest, and most audacious effort yet to boost California’s flagging Covid-19 vaccination rates, state officials on Thursday announced what appears to be the largest inoculation incentive in the nation: the chance for 10 residents to win $1.5 million apiece. The goal of the multimillion-dollar giveaway is simple: Give residents every possible motivation to finally roll up their sleeves as the state’s vaccine rollout enters its next, critical phase. “Some Californians weren’t ready to get their Covid-19 vaccine on day

one, and that’s OK,” Dr. Tomás Aragón, director of the California Department of Public Health and the state’s public health officer, said in a statement. “This program is designed to encourage those who need extra support to get vaccinated and help keep California safe.” Along with the 10 grand prizes – the winners of which will be chosen June 15, the date the state is set to fully reopen its economy – California is also putting up 30 prizes of $50,000 each, with half the winners selected June 4 and the rest June 11.
