WASHINGTON — In his first formal address to Congress last month, President Joe Biden implored lawmakers to act expeditiously on an ambitious to-do list. On expanding access to voting, Biden pushed for legislation to be sent for his signature “right away.” On immigration, he urged Republicans and Democrats to at least “argue over it” and “debate it,” but mostly, “let’s act.” Biden told Congress that he wants to sign legislation overhauling controversial policing practices by May 25, the first anniversary of the

murder of George Floyd. And while he pledged to do everything in his power to counteract the rash of gun violence, Biden added: “It’s time for Congress to act as well.” Yet the burst of legislating that characterized the first few months of the Biden administration – from the signing of $1.9 trillion in coronavirus relief into law to swift passage of several Democratic priorities in the House – has slowed dramatically. I used to visit Vegan Paradice, the only vegan restaurant in Fairfield, when it was downtown from 2012 to 2015. I went there just to try it out as I had never had vegan food and was surprised that I loved it. Everyone I took there enjoyed it, but it was kinda pricy for Fairfield and I was not then looking to switch the way I ate. I ultimately opted out of the Standard American Diet (with the apt acronym SAD) for health reasons. While the saying “I didn’t get to the top of the food chain just to eat grass” looks good on bumper stickers and t-shirts and is funny, the SAD was absolutely leading me to heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and early death. Those are not such knee-slappers. The results speak for themselves. The budding neuropathy in my feet? Gone. Diabetes numbers? In normal range. Joint pain? What joint pain? Taste Buds: Before I made the change, I thought there was no freakin’ way I could get used to eating fruits and vegetables, but one thing I didn’t know is that taste buds renew every two weeks. Now, that changing-everytwo-weeks thing applies just to taste buds, not taste in other

areas. So if you like Nickelback or Cardi B., you’re on your own. I didn’t have a sweet tooth, I had sweet teeth or a whole sweet mouth. I have now not eaten refined sugar (which is in just about everything, including iodized salt) in two years and soon after stopping eating it (and flour) I could actually taste my food and I was amazed. I recall the first time I discovered this phenomenon. I was in a room full of people and had brought my lunch to an event. I started eating a peach and suddenly the room melted away and there was no one else there. It was just me and this succulent, absolutely glorious tasting cold, indescribably sweet peach. I thought to myself, “Ya know, makeup sex is awesome . . . but OMG, THIS PEACH!” A Whole New Food World: There are things that I had never eaten in my life that it turns out I really love. They include grains like teff, bulgur, barley as well as vegetables like daikon and arugula (which I thought was a disease). Now there are some foods I don’t like for reasons other than taste. I recently got some black wild rice and decided I could never eat it again. It tasted fine, but when I put

it on a white plate, some of the loose grains of the black rice looked like a mouse had left its . . . uh, calling card on my plate. Ick. I Love Eating This Way: I do not feel deprived or that I am missing out on anything at all. I eat a huge variety of delicious and nutritious fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts and so much more. I know there are people who cannot handle legumes for a variety of reasons, one of them being gas. I have found that not to be a problem for a couple of reasons. One is that my body adjusted quite easily and the other is that I’m a guy. Like most weight-loss programs, BLE is overwhelmingly female. We men are the proud 4% and I call us unicorns. I have sometimes seen women posting in BLE Facebook groups about the problem of having gas and the resultant explosive flatulence. Problem? Uh, no. Again, I’m a guy. Danish toymaker Lego is launching its first-ever LGBTQ set, a 346-piece rainbow-inspired creation “designed to celebrate the diversity of our fans and the world around us,” the company said in a statement. Titled “Everyone is Awesome,” the model will feature 11 monochrome minifigures each with its own individual hairstyle and rainbow color. “Over the last few years there’s been a lot of struggles in the world and I think that’s really made us reflect as individuals and as society that we could all probably be doing a little bit more to show empathy, love and acceptance for other people,” Matthew Ashton, Lego’s VP of design, said in a video introducing the product. The characters were created without a specific gender, so builders get to decide if they are male, female, neither, both, or anything else. “I wanted to create a model that symbolizes inclusivity and celebrates everyone, no matter how they identify or who they love,” Ashton said in a statement.

Lavender U-Pick Festival set to start Daily Republic Staff

PLEASANTS VALLEY — Hierbas y Flores will host a Lavender U-Pick Festival from Saturday through June 13 in the lavender field at Soul Food Farm at 6146 Pleasants Valley Road. Hierbas y Flores is a partnership and farm venture between Soul Food Farm and Morningsun Herb Farm to plant beautiful fields of lavender in the countryside of Solano County. The many varieties come into bloom during the month of June, filling the field with lavender in shades of purples, blues, lavenders and whites. Members of the public are invited to come out to the fields during the flowering season to harvest their own bundles of lavender. There is plenty of space for social distancing. Advance registration is required and 40 visitors are allowed into the field at a time so that participants can enjoy a quiet, relaxing experience. There will be products available for sale made locally from Hierbas y Flores’ own essential oil and flower water, as well as the olive oil produced by Soul Food Farm. There is no cost to register and to come out to the fields. Bundles of lavender are $6 each. Ties, buckets and sanitized clippers will be available but visitors are encouraged to bring their own buckets and clippers if possible. Two workshops will be offered during the two-week festival: Fresh Lavender Wreath-Making ($70) and Lavender Wand-Making ($20). The Lavender U-Pick Festival day is June 12. There

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — K-9 correctional officers from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation trained with the 60th Security Forces Squadron military working dog handlers, April 27-29. The Department of Corrections conducted three separate, three-day training events at three different site locations throughout Northern California, with Travis as one of the sites. “With this joint training and partnership, we will be facilitating some of the training to help advance the Department of Corrections’ dog teams as well as our own,” said Staff Sgt. Roniel Tolentino, 60th Security Forces Squadron, military working dog trainer. The Department of Corrections brought in 25 dog teams, each specializing in different abilities to find contraband, i.e., drugs, bombs or

‘Hocus Pocus’ sequel to put a spell on Disney+ Tribune Content Agency They’ll put another spell on you, come 2022. The long-awaited “Hocus Pocus 2″ will hit Disney+ in 2022, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprising their roles as the Sanderson sisters, according to a press release Thursday. The sequel to the 1993 Halloween cult classic will center on a trio of young women who accidentally bring Winifred (Midler), Sarah (Parker) and Mary (Najimy) “back to modern day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world,” according to the release. Production is set

to begin this fall with “27 Dresses” director Anne Fletcher at the helm. Fletcher’s pal and “The Wedding Planner” filmmaker Adam Shankman stepped aside from directing, citing scheduling conflicts, and will now produce the film. The stars shared on Instagram to share the teaser poster and some favorite lines from the original film. “Sistaaaahs! It’s been 300 years... But we’re BACK!” wrote Midler. “Yep. I’m ready. To run. How will California schools spend gusher of cash?

uring Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 90-minute, superlative-saturated monologue on the virtues of his revised 2021-22 budget this month, he boasted of an historic high in public school spending. State aid and local property taxes would push per-pupil spending to $14,000, he said, and with federal funds, it would top $20,000 for the first time. Moreover, Newsom’s budget would advance his long-sought goal of offering universal pre-kindergarten programs, and a new notion of making schools centers for community services. The massive injection of money into schools raises a pungent question: How will they spend it? It’s a new version of a Dan Walters long-burning issue, centered on what educators call the “achievement gap” – a wide disparity in learning between poor and English-learner students and their more privileged classmates that has almost certainly worsened during classroom closures. Nearly a decade ago, former Gov. Jerry Brown and the Legislature gave schools with large numbers of under-performing students extra money to close the gap. However, he specifically refused to have the state monitor whether it was effective. Ever since, there’s been a running battle in political and legal arenas, pitting an “equity coalition” of civil rights and education reform groups against the education establishment over how Brown’s Local Control Funding Formula is working. One point of conflict has been the “Local Control and Accountability Plans” that are supposed to guide how Local Control Funding Formula funds are spent, with critics saying they are often vague and filled with dense educational jargon that makes them useless. After schools were closed last year due to the pandemic, the legal mandate to write Local Control and Accountability Plans was suspended and instead, local schools were to adopt “Learning Continuity Plans” as they temporarily shifted to at-home instruction. Last week, members of the equity coalition issued a critical report on the Learning Continuity Plans’ lack of clarity about “how they were investing money and resources to support California’s most underserved students – leading us to wonder whether they were investing in these supports at all.” The criticism mirrored the previous clashes over the Local Control and Accountability Plans and sets the stage for additional conflict over how schools will spend the gusher of new financing that Newsom is touting. The equity coalition likes what Newsom says about using the new revenues for a big push to narrow or close the achievement gap. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine our schools with transformative investments that can ensure all students will thrive,” Erin Apte, legislative counsel for Public Advocates, one of the authors of the new report, said in a statement. The report from Public Advocates and like-minded groups offers recommendations to help local schools “meet their equity obligations to students and families, strengthen their engagement of key stakeholders, bolster the services and supports they provide to students with unique needs, and improve transparency around public education funding during and in the aftermath of this public health crisis.” However, as we have seen with the Local Control Funding Formula and what has happened – or not happened – during the pandemic-induced classroom closures, local school officials will be under tremendous pressure to spend the extra money to shore up the status quo, such as salary increases, rather than concentrating on the achievement gap. The lingering question is whether while crowing about giving schools billions of extra dollars, Newsom is also willing – unlike Brown – to hold them accountable for spending the money effectively. There is reason to doubt that he will, given his close ties to the education establishment, particularly the California Teachers Association, and his Brown-like penchant for shifting tough decisions to local officials, often chanting “local is determinative” on dicey issues. Both Becerra and Bonta made calculated political decisions. Bonta is feebly attempting to scapegoat Abrams. Bonta left the Legislature and should leave partisan scapegoating behind him for all our sakes. Solar From Page One the geomagnetic waves unleashed by solar storms can cripple power grids, jam radio communications, bathe airline crews in dangerous levels of radiation and knock critical satellites off kilter. The sun began a new 11-year cycle last year and as it reaches its peak in 2025 the specter of powerful space weather creating havoc for humans grows, threatening chaos in a world that has become ever more reliant on technology since the last big storms hit 17 years ago. A recent study suggested hardening the grid could lead to $27 billion worth of benefits to the U.S. power industry. “It is still remarkable to me the number of people, companies, who think space weather is Hollywood fiction,” said Caitlin Durkovich, a special assistant to President Joe Biden and senior director of resilience and response in the National Security Council, during a talk at a solar-weather conference last month. The danger isn’t hypothetical. In 2017, a solar storm caused ham radios to turn to static just as the Category 5 Hurricane Irma was ripping through the Caribbean. In 2015, solar storms knocked out global positioning systems in the U.S. Northeast, a particular concern as selfdriving cars become a reality. Airline pilots are at greater risk of developing cataracts when solar storms hit. Female crew see higher rates of miscarriages. In March 1989, a solar storm over Quebec caused a province-wide outage that lasted nine hours, according to Hydro-Quebec’s website. A 2017 paper in the journal of the American Geophysical Union predicted blackouts caused by severe space weather could strike as much as 66% of the U.S. population, with economic losses reaching a potential $41.5 billion a day. To head off such a catastrophe, President Barack Obama’s administration laid out a strategy to begin raising awareness of the dangers of massive solar storms and to asses the risks they pose. Last year, President Donald Trump signed the ProSwift bill into law, which aims to build up technology to improve forecasting and measurement of space weather events. There’s debate among scientists about how much can be done to shield vulnerable parts of the planet’s infrastructure from the effects of solar storms. Steps such as using non-magnetic steel in transformers and installing more surge protectors in the grid could

bolster resistance, but in the end the best defense against catastrophe might be better forecasting. That would go a long way toward helping utilities prepare for shortages and making sure there are paths to back up their systems in case they lose power. In weeks, a new model developed by the University of Michigan will come online to help improve Earthbound forecasting. In the U.K., National Grid is building up its supply of spare transformers and conducting regular drills to deal with a major space weather event, said Mark Prouse, deputy director of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, a ministerial department. Within the past 15 years, the U.S. and U.K. have built space weather forecasting centers that deliver daily outlooks on what may be coming from the sun for airlines, power grids, satellite owners and anyone else threatened by solar flares. While Earth-bound observers can see explosive storms erupt on the sun, they can’t tell the true nature of the threat – exactly how potent it is – until the blast reaches a set of satellites 1 million miles from the planet. At that point, there is only 60 to 90 minutes until it hits Earth. “Our ability to understand and predict the solar cycle is still very limited,” said William Murtagh, director of the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center. Just as utilities can prepare for a severe thunderstorm by staging repair workers nearby, similar precautions could be taken ahead of a solar storm, according to Mark Olson, the reliability assessment manager for the North America Electric Reliability Corp., a nonprofit answerable to the U.S. and Canadian governments. “You have the potential for very large areas to have voltage instability,” Olson said. “Situational awareness is the key here, just like in terrestrial weather events.” Solar storms have their roots in an 11-year cycle that shifts the polarity of the sun’s magnetic field. The magnetic forces at work on the sun get tangled during the process, and can punch out through the surface, sending the sun’s plasma into outer space and potentially triggering storms on Earth. The most powerful geomagnetic storm ever recorded resulted in the 1859 Carrington Event, when telegraph lines electrified, zapping operators and setting offices ablaze in North America and Europe. If a storm of that magnitude were to hit today, it would likely cut power to millions of not billions of people.

A bipartisan group of senators has also quietly discussed expanding background checks for gun purchases, a weeks-long backand-forth that the lead Democrat involved said was “frustrating.” Immigration continues to vex GOP and Democratic lawmakers, as Republicans remain wary about granting legalization to undocumented immigrants as long as migrants, including unaccompanied children, continue to arrive at the southern border in large numbers. And on voting, Senate Democrats, who hold the barest of majorities, have not even rounded up unanimous support within their ranks, much less the 10 GOP votes that would be needed to clear legislation through their chamber. “At every level on all three – immigration, guns, policing – various levels of achievement at this point,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., giving a candid assessment of the issues his Judiciary Committee oversees. “Some disappointing, others very encouraging.” So far, senior White House officials and Democratic leaders have let

CDC From Page One are loosening and around 60% of the population isn’t yet fully vaccinated. “From everything I can tell the vaccines are highly effective against this variant,” said Samuel Scarpino, a co-founder of Global.health, an organization that tracks Covid cases and variants internationally. “But there are some states in the U.S. with quite low vaccination coverage putting them at risk for potential outbreaks.” The B.1.617 variant that has devastated India was first detected in the U.S. between late February and late March of this year. On May 4, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designated B.1.617 as a variant of interest. It is now studying whether to escalate its standing to a variant of concern, said Jade Fulce, a CDC spokesperson. Currently, the CDC has classified eight variants of interest, three of which are forms of the B.1.617 strain, according to the CDC website. The agency says these variants are “predicted to affect” transmission, diagnostics, therapeutics, or immune escape, but still have limited prevalence or expansion in the U.S. or in other countries. There are five variants of concern listed by the CDC. This category covers those that show “evidence of impact” on diagnostics, treatments

Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz. “We’re going to have a hard time winning the [2022] election. Gerrymandering is going to severely affect our chances. And so we need to be able to have strong, concrete arguments about what you get from a Democratic-controlled House, Senate and White House.” The White House has checked off significant legislative accomplishments already, such as

the massive pandemic relief package and a slate of Cabinet secretaries who were confirmed at the fastest pace in recent memory. The first tranche of judges tapped by Biden are poised to be confirmed as early as June, while the Senate is working its way through legislation aimed at boosting U.S. competitiveness against China, which could form one pillar of the White House’s broader infrastructure ambitions. Biden has turned his attention to his next bigticket legislative priority: a pair of infrastructure bills designed to bolster the economy and the workforce, which total about $4 trillion. The president, a veteran of the Senate who still feels at home at the Capitol, has been visibly involved, from convening Oval Office meetings to his top aides exchanging paper with GOP negotiators. In contrast, senior officials at the White House and on Capitol Hill say that, on the most sensitive issues, such as guns, immigration and policing, the administration has deliberately chosen to let lawmakers take the lead in negotiations without overt involvement from Biden or his top aides. The overall legislative strategy is one that aides say stems from Biden himself, whose decades in the Senate and eight years as vice president have imbued in him the value of relationships and insight into how successful negotiations unfold on Capitol Hill. There’s an acknowledgment, one senior White House official said, that each negotiation is unique, and Biden gets

the balancing act needed in congressional talks while knowing when to act through executive actions and the bully pulpit. Biden is aware of “what is the right way to encourage them and to be engaged,” said the senior official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly about White House strategy. “That kind of deft touch, I think, is very important, and one that is deliberate, careful and considered daily.” On guns, for instance, Justice Department officials have offered technical guidance when asked by senators, and Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., has kept White House aides in the loop on his talks with Republicans. A similar dynamic exists on policing negotiations, which are led by Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., and Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Cory Booker, D-N.J. Although administration officials have been helpful if called upon during the policing talks, Bass said, “it is 100% up to us.” “I really feel like the strategy here is very smart, which is to have the White House focused on the next big-ticket item while allowing rank-andfile members, like myself and Booker and others, to try to work out deals on other issues,” said Murphy, who has been meeting with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and other Republican senators on a gun deal. “It hasn’t always been that somebody like me gets the wiggle room to try to negotiate something like this.”

The designation will also spur efforts to control the variant’s spread and, potentially, development of new diagnostics or the modification of vaccines or treatments. So far, according to the CDC’s Fulce, there is “insufficient data to evaluate with a high degree of confidence whether these lineages are variants of concern.” Agency efforts to determine variant classification include reviews of the latest case percentages, as well as laboratory, epidemiological and clinical research data, according to Jasmine Reed, another CDC spokesperson. The CDC also is in touch with global partners, including the WHO, to share data and coordinate genomic surveillance and characterization of variants, Reed said. The recently released U.K. study by Public Health England found both the Pfizer vaccine, authorized for use in the U.S. on an emergency basis, and the AstraZeneca Plc shot, which isn’t yet available in the U.S., to be “highly effective” against the B.1.617.2 form of the variant first detected in India. The study was c o n du c t e d from April 5 to May 16. PfizerBioNTech shot was 88% effective against the B.1.617.2 variant two weeks after the second

dose. Two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were 60% effective. “We expect the vaccines to be even more effective at preventing hospitalization and death,” said Mary Ramsay, head of immunization at Public Health England. “So it is vital to get both doses to gain maximum protection against all existing and emerging variants.” Still, some health experts are questioning if the CDC is doing enough as experts warn that with states opening up, and anti-pandemic measures loosening, under-vaccinated pockets of the U.S. could be at risk of B.1.617 outbreaks. U.S. vaccine roll-out efforts vary state by state. New Mexico, Maine and New Jersey have administered enough doses to cover more than half of their population. Other regions, however, are lagging. Idaho, Wyoming and Louisiana have administered enough doses for just under 35% of their population, while Mississippi and Alabama have administered enough for only 30%. “I think the CDC should be doing more in terms of communicating the risks of this variant, and that should translate into states taking precautions more seriously than we’re currently doing,” Global.health’s Scarpino said. Scientists pay most attention to mutations in the gene that encodes the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which plays a key role in viral entry into cells. Targeted by vaccines, this protein

influences immunity and vaccine efficacy. B.1.617 is among several variants that carry multiple mutations affecting the spike protein. The WHO earlier this month declared B.1.617 a variant of global concern based on early evidence suggesting it is highly contagious and carries at least some propensity to evade antibodies, including bamlanivimab, a monoclonal antibody therapy developed by AbCellera Biologics Inc. and Eli Lilly & Co. The mutation was detected in 44 countries as of mid-May amid a dramatic spike in cases. It is “highly likely that this variant is more transmissible than B.1.1.7,” the variant first detected in the U.K., and possibly as much as 50% more transmissible, the U.K.’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies said on May 13. President Joe Biden has banned most travel from India, though the order doesn’t apply to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Countries including Singapore, the U.K. and Tanzania have also curbed travel to and from India over B.1.617 fears. The U.S. has been increasing its surveillance efforts in order to get a better understanding of the Covid variants that exist in the U.S. They are collaborating with state and local public health laboratories to increase the number of specimens that are sequenced. The CDC has also increased sequencing capacity through contracts with commercial diagnostic laboratories.

It worked. More parents put their babies on their backs and the rates of sudden infant death syndrome went down from 130.27 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 33.3 per 100,000 live births in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rates of accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed for infants have increased in the same time period. Those rates went from 3.44 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 25.5 per 100,000 per live births in 2019. Unexplained causes of death in bed also have increased slightly from 20.87 per 100,000 live births to 31.3 per 100,000 live births. The three – SIDS, unexplained deaths, and suffocation and strangulation – are considered sudden unexpected infant deaths. There are some factors that increase a baby’s risk factor for SUID, including being born prematurely or at a low birthweight or having a mother who smoked. Another big risk factor is where the baby is put to bed. A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics found of the incidents that were entered into the CDC’s Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Case Registry from 2011 to 2017, 72% happened in an unsafe sleeping environ-

Dr. Shyam Sivasankar, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at St. David’s Children’s Hospital, says when babies come into his emergency room not breathing, or after having had a near fatal suffocation event, the first thing he says is “tell me where they are sleeping.” Often the baby is cosleeping with an adult, he says, and the baby gets caught in adult blankets or pillows. That’s when he’ll reiterate how important it is to put baby to sleep in a crib with nothing in it. Sivasankar recommends that exhausted parents who are getting up with babies in the middle

of the night for feedings should set an alarm on their phones as a reminder to put baby back into the crib and not fall asleep with them in bed, on the sofa, in a chair or wherever they are feeding them. Sometimes the suffocation or strangulation happens to a baby who is in a crib with a blanket or something else soft like a stuffed animal. Sivasankar often hears that parents think their baby is cold and so they give them a blanket. He recommends using warmer clothing or a wearable blanket or sleep sack to keep them warm instead of something that is separate and loosely floating around the crib. Having babies sleep in an empty crib with just a fitted sheet needs to be followed for the first year of life, Sivasankar says. Even

tools like wedges, which are used for babies with reflux, shouldn’t be used unless doctor recommended. Babies who fall asleep in car seats, swings, strollers or on a parent, should be moved as soon as possible to their crib rather than allowing them to nap or sleep in one of those places, which are not a recommended safe sleeping environment. Car seats, strollers and swings also should be free of toys and blankets or other suffocation hazards in case a child falls asleep in one of those devices. These deaths are “an unfortunate situation,” because they are preventable. “The parents who experience this, they go on to educate and promote these safe sleep practices,” Sivansankar says.

Moments after the final buzzer sounded Friday night on the Warriors’ season-ending loss to the Grizzlies in the play-in tournament, guard Stephen Curry and forward Draymond Green embraced on the court. The hug said it all. In a season loaded with adversity, Curry and Green had done all they could to will their injury-thinned team to the playoffs, only for Golden State to drop both of its play-in games and enter the lottery for the second straight year. But even though the Warriors fell short of their postseason goal, they have plenty of reasons for optimism. Here are our end-ofseason superlatives for Golden State: MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: CURRY The Warriors missed the playoffs, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort from Curry. This might have been his most impressive year yet — a big statement considering that his unanimous MVP campaign in 2015-16 is widely considered the best statistical season in modern NBA history. At an age when many players contemplate retirement, Curry, 33, led the league in scoring (32 points per game) and 3-pointers (337) while ranking fifth in free-throw percentage (91.6). His defense and vocal leadership were also as good as they’ve ever been. If not for Curry’s historic scoring surge to end the regular season, the Warriors might not have even made the play-in tournament. The question now is what Golden State will do to ensure he is competing for a title in 2021-22. As his performance this season illustrated, Curry is too talented to just be vying for a playoff berth.

In the first five games of the season, when Green missed four outings with a foot injury and spent another on a severe minutes restriction, Golden State posted the NBA’s fourth-worst defensive rating. In the 67 games after Green returned to his usual playing time, the Warriors boasted the league’s fifth best defensive rating. He led Golden State in steals (1.7) and ranked third in blocks (0.8), but he affected games in ways that won’t show up in any box score.

Green is a masterful help-side defender who can also match up one-on-one with any position. Utah center Rudy Gobert will likely win Defensive Player of the Year because he better fits the traditional criteria for the award, but one could argue that Green meant more to his team’s defense than anyone else in the league. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: MISSING THE PLAYOFFS In the immediate aftermath of Friday’s loss to Memphis, head coach Steve Kerr called 2020-21 a success for the Warriors. Few doubt that Golden State had a lot of positive takeaways, but there’s something unsettling about the

For nearly two months, the Giants lived a dream. Gabe Kapler’s club exceeded nearly every spring training expectation, working its way to the top of the National League West on the shoulders of excellent starting pitching, outstanding defense and a lineup that produced timely home runs. The dream has not only ended, it’s given way to a nightmare. In a span of 72 hours, the Giants fell from first place down to third as Dodgers starting pitchers put on an overwhelming performance capped off by Julio Urías’ dominant effort in an ugly 11-5 defeat. In the club’s worst loss of the season, right-hander Anthony DeSclafani became the first Giants starter since Ty Blach in May, 2017, to give up 10 earned runs in an outing as he watched his ERA climb from

Tear-and-share scones baked around a berry compote make for an easy weekend treat

adore the neat, tidy sides and stately height of a classic British scone. But I don’t always have the time or, um, free counter space to work butter into the dry ingredients and then roll and cut dainty rounds or even elegant wedges. I wanted a recipe that would help me satisfy my scone craving with less fuss. It took a compressed viewing of the entire season of the absolutely delightful Netflix series “Nadiya Bakes” with former “Great British Baking Show” winner Nadiya Hussain to get the gears turning. One theme that consistently appears in both shows is the tear-andshare: Breads, buns, wreaths of rolls. The more rustic appearance of items baked into one another is a large part of the appeal – they’re fun to look at, less fussy to make and informal enough that no one’s going to hesitate to dig in. I wondered, could I, ahem, pull it off with scones? I’ve made a lot of scone recipes over the years so I whipped out my trusty yellow legal pad and started thinking about what I liked about each one and drilling down to how the different ingredient amounts might affect the ultimate outcome. The tear-and-share approach seemed most achievable with a dough I could scoop and drop onto the sheet pan. What became pretty apparent was that I needed a fairly wet dough that would puff up beautifully. Eventually it came together. A mix of yogurt and milk provides tang and tenderness but not so much moisture to make the dough soupy. Melted butter streamlines the mixing process and also helps the scones spread just the right amount to bake into each other in the way I wanted. An egg adds richness and loft. The dough includes a restrained amount of sugar, but a little vanilla and some chopped milk chocolate lend a gentle sweetness. (Feel free to swap in your favorite inclusion, such as dark chocolate, nuts or dried fruit, as long as you keep the weight about the same.) A disher makes easy work of portioning the somewhat sticky dough, though measuring cups or even a pair of dinner spoons would also work. Because I liked the idea of having something around which to build a ring of scones, I decided to throw in a baked berry compote set in the middle of the sheet pan. All it requires

(Eliminate the cornstarch if you prefer a looser, more saucelike consistency for drizzling.) Don’t want to bother with the compote? Just stagger and drop the dough into whatever shape or pattern you want. In the end, I came out of testing even more excited than when I went into it, which isn’t always the case! (Nothing but raves from all my taste-testers, too.) In truth, the result was more of a mash-up of scones, biscuits and muffins (muffin tops, really) than scones alone, and that’s what makes it particularly enjoyable and unique. I even contemplated a silly portmanteau combining the names – muffsconscuits? bisconffins? – but that seemed like a mouthful, especially when the only mouthful I want you to experience is the one in which you tear off a fluffy bite of this treat and pause to savor it. Tear-and-Share Drop Scones With Baked Berry Compote Active time: 30 minutes Total time: 50 minutes 11 to 13 scones This breakfast treat is basically a tender, fluffy and delicately sweet mash-up of scones, drop biscuits and muffins. Melted butter means no need to fuss with working it into the dry ingredients – and no rolling and cutting either, great for lazier weekend mornings. The

rustic baked-into-each-other appearance makes for a fun tear-and-share experience. The berry compote is a nice addition as a condiment and also serves as something to build your scone ring around. If you want to skip it, no worries. Just stagger and drop the dough into whatever shape or pattern you want. There’s plenty of room to improvise here. We liked chopped milk chocolate, though you can substitute dark or any other add-in you enjoy (nuts, dried fruit, etc.), as long as you keep the volume about the same. Storage Notes: The scones taste best the day they’re made, but they’ll keep well in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Or freeze for several months. Reheat for a few minutes in the oven at 350 degrees or on the toast setting of the toaster oven until warmed through. For the berry compote: Unsalted butter, for greasing 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch Pinch Diamond Crystal kosher salt (may substitute other salt of choice) 4 ounces (113 grams) frozen mixed berries, thawed under running water in the sink and drained/patted dry (may substitute fresh berries) For the scones: 2 cups (250 grams) allpurpose flour 1 ⁄3 cup (66 grams) granulated sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder

⁄4 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt (may substitute generous 1⁄4 teaspoon table or sea salt or 1⁄2 teaspoon Morton’s kosher salt) 1 ⁄2 cup (120 grams) wholemilk Greek-style yogurt, preferable Fage 5% 1 ⁄2 cup (120 milliliters) milk (any percentage) 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 6 tablespoons (3⁄4 stick/85 grams) unsalted butter, melted and cooled About 2⁄3 cup (3 1⁄2 to 4 ounces/100 to 115 grams) milk chocolate, chopped (see headnote) Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet (about 13 by 18 inches) with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Make the berry compote: Lightly grease the outside of a small ovenproof bowl or ramekin (2 cups is more than sufficient) with butter or nonstick cooking spray. In the bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch and salt. Add the berries and stir until evenly coated. Place the bowl in the center of the baking sheet. Make the scones: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a medium bowl, whisk together the yogurt, milk, egg and vanilla. Gradually add the melted butter, whisking constantly. Add the yogurt mixture to the flour mixture and stir gently until 3

mostly combined, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as you go. Try not to overwork the dough, otherwise your scones could be tough. Fold in the chopped chocolate, at which point the flour mixture should almost be completely incorporated (a few dry spots are OK). Using a No. 16 disher or 1⁄4 -cup measuring cup, scoop and drop the dough into mounds around the compote bowl, spaced about 1⁄2 inch apart. (Each portion should weigh about 70 grams.) How you arrange the scones depends somewhat on the size of your compote bowl and your preference, but we placed 7 mounds surrounding the bowl (4 1⁄2 inches in diameter), adding the rest in a second ring around the outside. Position the second scones near gaps in the first circle. Bake for 20 to 23 minutes, or until the scones are puffed and golden. The compote should look cooked down and thickened, though not as set as jam. Let cool a few minutes (this lets the compote gel a bit more and ensures it doesn’t scald your mouth). Serve warm, letting people tear off scones and scoop the compote at the table. Add garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds, being careful not to burn it. Add mushrooms and a pinch of salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring often, until mushrooms are lightly browned. Add kale and sauté for 5 minutes, or until kale has softened. Set aside to cool slightly.

Prepare lasagna: Ladle about 1 cup tomato cream sauce into the bottom of a 12-by-9-inch lasagna pan and spread so it completely covers the bottom. Lay 4 lasagna noodles on top of sauce. Pour another ¾-1 cup of tomato sauce on top of noodles (depending on how saucy you like your pasta), and spread with a spatula or spoon to cover. Layer half of the kale mixture over the noodles, then dollop 1⁄3 of the ricotta mixture on top, followed by 1⁄3 of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat with 4 more noodles, sauce, kale, ricotta mixture and mozzarella cheese. Add a final layer of lasagna noodles and top with the remaining tomato sauce and remaining ricotta and mozzarella cheese. If desired, sprinkle a little grated Parmesan on top along with finely chopped parsley. Cover pan with foil and bake lasagna for about 45 minutes or until top cheese is melted and golden. ith the growing number of streaming services, viewers have an unprecedented level of choice over what they want to watch. But they also face the daunting task of keeping all those services straight. Not to mention the growing cost. A cadre of former Disney and Discovery executives has proposed a solution to help relieve streaming overload. Their upcoming app, Struum (pronounced “stroom,” which is “stream” in Dutch), uses a credit-based system similar to the fitness app ClassPass to let subscribers access shows and movies from dozens of niche streaming services. The Los Angeles-based company, backed by former Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Michael Eisner’s Tornante Co., has finalized deals to feature content from more than 50 smaller streaming services, studios and programmers. For a monthly fee, users get access to programming from providers including BBC Select, Tribeca, Magnolia Pictures, Cheddar, Indieflix, Filmbox, Cinedigm, Docurama and Revolt in one place, rather than by jumping from app to app. Struum this month is expected to launch its app through the iOS app store, the web, and Google’s Chromecast, with content from about 25 initial partners. The app organizes content from multiple providers by categories, such as “indie hits,” “stranger than fiction” and “true crime.” Struum will also make recommendations across programmers based on users’ activity. “For the consumer, it’s so hard to find things,” said Chief Executive Lauren DeVillier, a former Discovery Ventures and Disney/ ABC TV Group executive who cofounded the company with Paul Pastor, Eugene Liew and Thomas Wadsworth. “Everything’s so disaggregated. We’re sort of re-bundling for consumers. Our goal is to say, ‘You really love cooking? Here are 10 different services that are going to conquer it for you.’” Struum, founded in April 2020, is far from the first company to notice that consum-

More than half of consumers said in a recent Deloitte survey that they are frustrated that they need multiple subscriptions to access the content they want to watch. And consumers are subscribing to more services than ever, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, with newer players like Paramount+, Discovery+ and Peacock competing for attention with Disney+, Netflix and HBO Max. A Parks Associates survey found that 31% of households had four or more streaming subscriptions in the third quarter of last year, up from 14% a year earlier. The number of streaming platforms has passed 300 in the U.S., more than double the number in 2014, the consultancy said. Companies are trying several different ways to streamline the market. London-based ScreenHits TV recently launched an app to help viewers see what’s on all the different streaming channels through one TV Guide-like system. Unlike Struum, ScreenHits allows users to see content on the streaming services they already subscribe to, including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. ScreenHits’ desktop version is free, while its iOS app charges

99 cents a month and includes additional features. Users “can see very clearly what they’re getting from cutting the cord and having access to these streamers,” said ScreenHits CEO Rose Adkins Hulse. “We really believe the streamers are the new TV channels for the future.” Companies such as Roku and Amazon try to aggregate streaming apps by offering viewers different services through a single interface. Search engine apps including JustWatch and Reelgood help viewers find what shows and movies they’re looking for, and show users what series are available through the different providers. “They’re all trying to solve this issue, because consumers are just overwhelmed,” said Parks Associates research director Steve Nason. “They love that they have all this choice but that choice is killing them.” Struum’s business model is unusual. Subscribers will pay $4.99 a month to receive 100 credits. Those credits can then be used to pay for a TV episode or movie (say, “Planet of the Apes,” for four credits), giving the viewer access to that title for 30 days. Users can buy additional credits through the

app, similar to Audible. A TV show episode will cost three to four credits, while a feature film will cost five to six. The idea was inspired by ClassPass, an app that lets subscribers use credits to try workout classes at different gyms and fitness studios. “It’s another front door for the user,” DeVillier said. “We’re letting you dip in and dip out of these services.” The catch is that Struum won’t have the big streamers, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+ and Discovery+. Instead, the company has deals with more niche services that are looking for ways to increase their reach. Cinedigm, for example, had about 640,000 subscribers as of April. The biggest streaming companies are doing everything they can to increase “scale” – size and reach – on their own. Disney+ and Netflix are spending billions of dollars on original content and don’t need to share revenue with an app like Struum to help with their marketing. AT&T on Monday announced a deal to spin off WarnerMedia, the parent of HBO Max, in a $43-billion merger with Discovery Communications. But Eisner predicts that some

bigger players will eventually get on board with Struum if it is successful. “If you get big enough, a company like ViacomCBS would find a way to introduce consumers to their really good product through Struum,” he said. “I think they will find over time that it’s just another avenue to bring people to their portal.” For now, Struum thinks there’s a lucrative big business in aggregating the content from the 250 or so services that represent the more obscure end of the streaming industry. For the smaller streamers, being on Struum is a chance to get their names out there and get more subscribers. If a user watches a lot of Magnolia content, for the example, Struum will suggest they should consider subscribing to Magnolia’s standalone service. Struum will split revenue with providers based on what movies and shows users watch by spending their credits. With the combined cost of the major streaming services already rivaling the cable bundle, it’s unclear whether viewers will want to pay for yet another service to package a lot of content from the more minor players in the streaming wars. Parks Associates’ Nason said consumers may be happy with finding content on the various apps without help from a third party. “Do most consumers want to sign up for this other thing, or am I just fine taking 10 minutes to find something to watch on Netflix?” he said. But the timing is opportune for Struum to test its business model, said Jeff Cuban, who overseas his brother Mark Cuban’s properties, entertainment including Magnolia Pictures. How Amazon pulled off the radical new TV show that gives its actors ‘nowhere to hide’ Los Angeles Times Amazon’s new anthology series is called “Solos” even though, technically, no one is actually alone. Anne Hathaway, for example, shares a scene with additional versions of her character. Anthony Mackie plays two roles, acting only opposite himself. And Uzo Aduba and Helen Mirren converse with virtual assistants voiced by Jack Quaid and Dan Stevens, respectively. Instead, the title of the profoundly insightful sci-fi series speaks to that innate human need to connect with other people. Created entirely during the pandemic, “Solos” is one of the few television projects to embrace the limitations of Covid-safe filming for the sake of artistic experiment. “In film and TV, it’s incredibly rare to have a single character telling an uninterrupted, 30-minute story – it just doesn’t happen,” creator David Weil told the Los Angeles Times. “But to be honest, the way I first fell in love with storytelling was listening to scary stories around the campfire with my brother, or hearing my grandmother share memories around the kitchen table. I wanted to create that feeling onscreen.” Spurred by the solitude of sheltering in place last spring, the “Hunters” showrunner began writing scripts with “the stories that are too difficult to share, whether because someone is too shy or embarrassed or ashamed,” said Weil. “It became an exploration of, ‘Who are we when we can actually be seen for the first time, when we can finally express our secret dreams and fears?’” All seven episodes – written by Weil, Tori Sampson, Bekka

And when Mackie was captured as both a human character and a robotic replica, he acted opposite a double.

“He would be playing one character while, at the very same time, also thinking about how he was going to respond as the other character,” Weil recalled of the second episode. “It was incredible, almost like watching someone play two instruments at the same time.” While numerous TV shows have explicitly incorporated Covid into their narratives, only one “Solos” episode mentions a deadly virus. But “Solos” is very much a pandemic-related series in that it echoes the emotional experience of surviving forms of social isolation. “It’s a time capsule of a moment we were living in, and many people around the world are still living in, because all these universal feelings like hope and fear and loneliness were heightened during this awful time,” said Weil. “But ultimately, these stories are both exhortations and cautionary tales to what our lives were before the pandemic and also what they can be afterward,” he continued. “At least in America, as we’re moving toward opening back up and rolling out vaccines, I wanted this to encourage an introspection and reflection: Is there a loved one you haven’t spoken to in some time, and maybe want to reconnect after watching this? Or is there a dream you’ve always had that, after watching, you might be more energized and to pursue that passion? “For me, working on ‘Solos’ has taught me to not be afraid to create pieces that are maybe a little different and really lead with emotion,” he continued. “I hope it inspires people to be a bit bolder and live more truthfully, in whatever way feels right for whoever is watching.”

This has been a year like none other for Dr. Rebecca Elon, who has dedicated her professional life to helping older adults. It’s taught her what families go through when caring for someone with serious illness as nothing has before. “Reading about caregiving of this kind was one thing. Experiencing it was entirely different,” she told me. All these experiences have been “a gift, in a way: They’ve truly changed me,” said Elon, 66, a parttime associate professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Elon’s uniquely rich perspective on the pandemic is informed by her multiple roles: family caregiver, geriatrician and policy expert specializing in longterm care. “I don’t think we, as a nation, are going to make needed improvements [in long-term care] until we take responsibility for our aging mothers and

fathers – and do so with love and respect,” she told me. Elon has been acutely aware of prejudice against older adults – and determined to overcome it – since she first expressed interest in geriatrics in the late 1970s. “Why in the world would you want to do that?” she recalled being asked by a department chair at Baylor College of Medicine, where she was a medical student. “What can you possibly do for those [old] people?” Elon ignored the scorn and became the first geriatrics fellow at Baylor, in Houston, in 1984. She cherished the elderly aunts and uncles she had visited every year during her childhood and was eager to focus on this new specialty, which was just being established in the U.S. “She’s an extraordinary advocate for elders and families,” said Dr. Kris Kuhn, a retired geriatrician and longtime friend. In 2007, Elon was named geriatrician of the year by the American Geriatrics Society. Her life took an unexpected turn in 2013 when she started noticing personality changes and judgment lapses in her husband, Dr. William Henry Adler III, former chief of clinical immunology research at the National Institute on Aging, part of the federal National Institutes of Health. Proud and stubborn, he refused to seek medical attention for several years. Eventually, however, Adler’s decline accelerated and in 2017 a neurologist diagnosed frontotemporal dementia with motor neuron disease, an immobilizing condition. Two years later, Adler could barely swallow or speak and had lost the ability to climb down the stairs in

Dr. Rebecca Elon’s life took an unexpected turn in 2013 when she noticed personality changes and judgment lapses in her husband, Dr. William Henry Adler III. He was eventually diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia with motor neuron disease and died in February. their Severna Park, Maryland, house. “He became a prisoner in our upstairs bedroom,” Elon said. By then, Elon had cut back on work significantly and hired a home health aide to come in several days a week. In January 2020, Elon enrolled Adler in hospice and began arranging to move him to a nearby assisted living center. Then, the pandemic hit. Hospice staffers stopped coming. The home health aide quit. The assisted living center went on lockdown. Not visiting Adler wasn’t imaginable, so Elon kept him at home, remaining responsible for his care. “I lost 20 pounds in four months,” she told me. “It was incredibly demanding work, caring for him.” Meanwhile, another crisis was brewing. In Kankakee, Illinois, Elon’s sister, Melissa Davis, was dying of esophageal cancer and no longer able to care for their mother, Betty Davis, 96. The two had lived together

for more than a decade and Davis, who has dementia, required significant assistance. Elon sprang into action. She and two other sisters moved their mother to an assisted living facility in Kankakee while Elon decided to relocate a few hours away, at a continuing care retirement community in Milwaukee, where she’d spent her childhood. “It was time to leave the East Coast behind and be closer to family,” she said. By the end of May, Elon and her husband were settled in a two-bedroom apartment in Milwaukee with a balcony looking out over Lake Michigan. The facility has a restaurant downstairs that delivered meals, a concierge service, a helpful hospice agency in the area and other amenities that relieved Elon’s isolation. “I finally had help,” she told me. “It was like night and day.” Previously bedbound, Adler would transfer to a chair with the help of a lift (one couldn’t be installed

in their Maryland home) and look contentedly out the window at paragliders and boats sailing by. “In medicine, we often look at people who are profoundly impaired and ask, ‘What kind of quality of life is that?’” Elon said. “But even though Bill was so profoundly impaired, he still had a strong will to live and retained the capacity for joy and interaction.” If she hadn’t been by his side day and night, Elon said, she might not have appreciated this. Meanwhile, her mother moved to an assisted living center outside Milwaukee to be nearer to Elon and other family members. But things didn’t go well. The facility was on lockdown most of the time and staff members weren’t especially attentive. Concerned about her mother’s wellbeing, Elon took her out of the facility and brought her to her apartment in late December. For two months, she tended to her husband’s and mother’s needs. In mid-February, Adler, then 81, took a sharp turn for the worse. Unable to speak, his face set in a grimace, he pounded the bed with his hands, breathing heavily. With hospice workers’ help, Elon began administering morphine to ease his pain and agitation. “I thought, ‘Oh, my God, is this what we ask families to deal with?’” she said. Though she had been a hospice medical director, “that didn’t prepare me for the emotional exhaustion and the ambivalence of giving morphine to my husband.” Elon’s mother was distraught when Adler died 10 days later, asking repeatedly what had happened to him and weeping when she was told. At some point, Elon realized her mother was also

grieving all the losses she had endured over the past year: the loss of her home and friends in Kankakee; the loss of Melissa, who’d died in May; and the loss of her independence. That, too, was a revelation made possible by being with her every day. “The dogma with people with dementia is you just stop talking about death because they can’t process it,” Elon said. “But I think that if you repeat what’s happened over and over and you put it in context and you give them time, they can grieve and start to recover.” “Mom is doing so much better with Rebecca,” said Deborah Bliss, 69, Elon’s older sister, who lives in Plano, Texas, and who believes there are benefits for her sister as well. “I think having [Mom] there after Bill died, having someone else to care for, has been a good distraction.” And so, for Elon, as for so many families across the country, a new chapter has begun, born out of harsh necessities. The days pass relatively calmly, as Elon works and she and her mother spend time together. “Mom will look out at the lake and say, ‘Oh, my goodness, these colors are so beautiful,’” Elon said. “When I cook, she’ll tell me, ‘It’s so nice to have a meal with you.’ When she goes to bed at night, she’ll say, ‘Oh, this bed feels so wonderful.’ She’s happy on a moment-to-moment basis. Out of Kerr’s rotation early in the season, he headed to the G League bubble near Orlando, where he became more confident with his jump shot and made strides as a facilitator. After being recalled from Santa Cruz on March 1, Poole averaged 14.7 points in 36 games. His clutch performances in important outings late in the season prompted Kerr to say that he could see Poole being the team’s sixth man as soon as next season.
