FAIRFIELD — The word hobo has a few different meanings. Most notably, it refers to an unemployed person who wonders and may hop in open railroad boxcars for a free ride. It became an acronym about eight months ago for Helping Others Before Ourselves, a program out the Islamic Center of Fairfield. Raheela Dean brought the program to life after working with the area’s homeless, starting with the former Mission Solano. She took a little break as she
and her husband operated the Hot Spot Cafe and Deli on Chadbourne Road. They sold it just before the novel coronavirus outbreak. “I knew there was so much more for me (to do),” she said. And, she saw a great need, especially with MIRZA Covid-19. People lost jobs, cars and housing, she said. “It was a domino effect,” Dean said. She connected with Free Food Solano and launched a weekly food giveaway at the Islamic Center. They also share boxes with City
Church, Liberty Church and Mission Somoa. What started with roughly 60 boxes weekly has now more than doubled to 120. The food is given to anyone who shows up. “No questions asked,” said Imam Faridbeg Mirza. Dean has also helped to distribute food in Alameda and Santa Clara counties. More the 900,000 pounds of food has been given away in Solano County and the surrounding area since she launched HOBO Exchange. See Hobo, Page A7

President Joe Biden said Saturday that he has “grave concern” about ongoing violence across Israel.
Members of the United Nations Security Council, including the U.S. and China, called on Israel and Hamas to immediately halt more than a week of deadly fighting. That may not be enough, though, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled on Sunday that the fighting will continue as Israel continues to pummel
the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire from Hamas and other militant groups. The violence has raised the political heat on President Joe Biden, with calls from within his Democratic Party to condemn Israel running up against longstanding U.S. support. Biden also risks blowback at home if he shows any daylight between him and

FA I R F I E L D — Members of the Fairfield-Suisun School Board got off to an energetic start Thursday with a proposal from Trustee Craig Wilson to follow strict rules of order for the session. Before the approval of the agenda was considered, he proposed to the board a motion to remove all opportunity for board members to ask questions or make commits except to speak in favor or against the motion. It carried on a 6-0 vote with Trustee Ana Petero dissenting. Wilson said he was unhappy with the past few meetings because of what he perceived as intentional disruptions or at least grandstanding, which he defined as gratuitously speak-
ing to the public but not to the board. “The meetings are to formally approve or disapprove agenda items, which is the primary reason we meet,” he said. He noted that Robert’s Rules of Order do not allow for debating an issue, except for debating motions. Robert’s Rules of Order is a political book written by Henry Martyn Robert. It is the most widely used manual of parliamentary procedure in the United States. It governs the meetings of a diverse range of organizations – including church groups, county commissions, homeowners associations, nonprofit associations, professional societies, school boards and trade unions. The previous meetings, Wilson said, were See School, Page A7

Branch has been recognized for his service in numerous ways, including, but not limited to, being named the recipient of the 2002 California Parks and Recreation Society Community Champion Award, the 2002 Community Service Foundation Citizen of the Year Award and being named the 2018 Veteran of the Year by California Assemblyman Jim Frazier. Jenn Victoria: There are numerous places to buy stuff on Facebook so it’s nice to have a place where you know the asking price and the one you negotiate will always end up being $0. Fairfielder Jenn Victoria created the private group Somethin’ 4 Nothin’ in 2012 that now has more than 6,000 members. Somethin’ 4 Nothin’ is a closed Facebook group, which means that potential members must first be approved. Key to the success of Somethin’ 4 Nothin’ is the concept, mentioned in the group’s rules, of keeping the cycle of giving going. Members must first post an item to give before claiming one posted by someone else or making an ISO (In Search Of) post. In addition to creating a freebie hub, Jenn also created a community within a community. Anonymous Fairfield dogooders: There are many Fairfielders among us who pick up trash, who pay for the person in the Starbucks line behind them, who return lost wallets, who hold the door for others, who give their money and/ or time to charitable causes, who smile and greet complete strangers and in numerous other ways are forces for the collective good. Does Fairfield have challenges, issues and problems? Absolutely. Are there many negative aspects to the city? Of course. But we also have numerous people here who are beacons of positivity. You know who you are. This Bumpie is for you. Reach Fairfield writer and accidental local historian Tony Wade at toeknee weighed@gmail.com.

PLEASANTS VALLEY — The Pleasants Valley Agriculture Association has launched the PVAA Community Fire Safety Council, tying in with the start of the 2021 fire season. The farmers and rural area landowners in Vacaville were hit hard in August when the LNU Lightning Complex Fire burned some 547 square miles (350,000 acres), destroying nearly 1,500 structures and killing six people. He has discovered more than a dozen new species of sharks and has gotten in
the water to tag some of the rarest sharks on the planet, including the ultrarare megamouth shark. The event will occur via Zoom at 4 p.m. Friday. Violinist hits the right notes as a tax preparer Tribune Content Agency PHILADELPHIA — The violinist/violist Zoë Martin-Doike was not yet 30 when she landed a full-time job with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2018. Back then, “you got an orchestra job and you’d made it. You didn’t have to hustle any more,” she said. “The pandemic has taught us we still have to hustle.” Like everyone else, classical musicians around the world have been challenged by Covid-19’s devastating disruptions. But Martin-Doike, 31, is likely among only a few violists/violinists whose latest side hustle is to pursue an undergraduate degree in accounting. And probably not many, if any, of her peers also have become a certified tax preparer – and have helped other taxpayers file their IRS returns. The same sort of determina-
tion, discipline, and focus that have enabled Martin-Doike to succeed in music also have helped her frame her unusual pandemic pivot as an investment in the future. She said a deeper understanding of accounting and taxation will help sustain her artistic life and financial independence, as well as provide the skills to assist other musicians and artists with their often-complex tax issues. “I am still planning to go fullsteam with my music career,” said Martin-Doike, who grew up in Honolulu and lives in Philadelphia. “But during the pandemic it became clear I need to build multiple income streams. I was looking for a way to branch out and take advantage of my love of personal finance.” The Met furloughed its musicians last April; Martin-Doike’s final performance with the esteemed orchestra was a March 10, 2020, pro-
duction of “The Flying Dutchman.” As shutdowns and quarantines circumscribed daily life, it seemed like “the perfect time to dive in and go all in for another degree,” she said. So Martin-Doike enrolled last July in a bachelor of science in business administration-accounting program offered by Western Governors University, a private, nonprofit online institution based in Salt Lake City. Martin-Doike is already about two-thirds of the way toward completing her degree. She had earlier completed her undergraduate studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and earned a master’s degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. “Some students move through more quickly than others, and Zoë really put in the work, talking to See Notes, Page A8

In doing so, I was able to accept the decision that my friend had made regarding severing our friendship. And by forgiving myself, I also realized that I was not to blame. After declarer calls for dummy’s six, what should East do? Whatever East plays, South wins with his jack, crosses to the dummy in spades and takes the losing club finesse. What should West do next? You can see that if West cashes the diamond ace, declarer’s king drops, and West can cash three more diamond tricks to defeat the contract. But what if South started with K-J-5 or K-J-3 of diamonds, and East has the heart ace? Then cashing the diamond ace would be fatal to the defense. Emily Blunt says superhero genre ‘has been exhausted’ Tribune Content Agency Emily Blunt is doubling down about not a big fan of the superhero genre. The “A Quiet Place” star shot down rumors that she and husband John Krasinski were suiting up to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a recent interview, she was asked about the “Fantastic Four” reboot casting rumors, which she maintained were false. During an interview on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show, the Golden Globe Award winner explained that the reports are just speculative “fan-casting” and “People saying, ‘Wouldn’t that be great?’” Blunt also opened up about how she famously turned down the oppor-
tunity to portray Black Widow in “Iron Man 2,” which Scarlett Johansson went on to adopt in the blockbuster franchise. The British actress made it clear that she didn’t reject the part because she thought it was beneath her. “I love ‘Iron Man,’ I wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr. It would’ve been amazing,” she said before opening up about her thoughts on the superheroes becoming a box office staple. “I don’t know if superhero movies are for me. They’re not up my alley,” Blunt confessed. When asked if she is tired of the superhero genre, the “Mary Poppins Returns” star admitted that she believes “it’s been exhausted.”

Our nation’s future teeters in the balance

as your jaw dropped to your belt over the news? Yes, the party of Abraham Lincoln is fully supporting a Big Lie, just like in Germany in the 1930s. The reason is the same, too: to elect a person who couldn’t be elected otherwise. The GOP has no platform anymore. It just parrots whatever their Supreme Leader says, like, “I won by a lot,” which is lie number 30,001 supported by not a shred of evidence. The GOP has become a cult that is mesmerized by an incompetent but charismatic fraud. After 240 years, this is new. But a plan behind the madness is beginning to come clear. For years I’ve listened to Jack Batson Sean Hannity accuse the Democrats of lusting for power. “They want you to wear facemasks to get used to government power,” he’s recently claimed. But it’s the GOP that’s really organizing to seize power. It’s the GOP that cries, “Election integrity, election integrity!” But it’s the GOP that is abandoning election integrity. In the upcoming congressional elections, Republican swing states will certify only Republican wins. That’s what you’re seeing with all the voter restrictions and other laws that are being put in place now. Those laws legalize corrupt practices. A baffled Democrat might ask, “What problems in the 2020 election are these restrictions trying to repair?” Wrong question. Forbidding giving water to people standing in election lines in Georgia was not a problem last year, to cite an outrageous example. The real problem was, too many Democrats voted. The real problem was, the wrong person won. Or look at the vote recount now going on in Arizona. The Republican state Senate commissioned a Trump-loyal group, Cyber Ninjas, to “audit” the election results in Maricopa County. Undoubtedly, they will find reasons to disqualify enough of Biden’s 10,000-vote margin to reverse the state’s Biden win. It’s not legal, but so what? It’s a rehearsal for 2024. Again, the problem is that too many Democrats voted and the wrong guy won. The legislatures in many Republican states are passing laws that will allow them to override nonpartisan election workers, just like the Arizona secretary of state has been pushed aside in what she calls the “fraudit.” You might have seen that the Republican convention in Utah recently almost voted to censure the state’s former favorite son, Mitt Romney. The legislator who offered the motion stated that Mitt “caused harm to our party, our country and ultimately the U.S. Constitution.” Where is George Orwell? The real reason is that Mitt refused to bow to the lie. He voted to certify Democratic votes. You’ve certainly watched the political assassination of Liz Cheney. Again, we can’t have a party leader deviate from the party line, can we? Like in the old USSR, she’s been purged. When a presidential certification vote comes up to Congress again in 2024, Republicans had better vote against any Democratic state win that the Republican Party can discredit. Republican members of Congress, you’re on notice – don’t be “Liz Cheneyed.” What you’re witnessing is a warm-up and testing of a future power grab, unlike anything in our past. The GOP wants to rule no matter what. And if Democrats take to the streets chanting “Stop the Steal,” why, there’s always those armed militias that might assist Republicans. We saw them Jan. 6 in their practice scrimmage. This can all be stopped if House Resolution 1 (now Senate 1), the For the People Act, would be passed. But listen to Sen. Mitch McConnell: It’s “a partisan takeover,” he whined, that will “give Democrats unprecedented control over 50 states’ elective laws.” No, it would actually end all this deadly tomfoolery and voter suppression. The Democrats will stand for democracy in 2022 and 2024. The Republicans will stand for autocracy. How do you stand, Fairfield Republicans? OK with raw, unvarnished corruption? You don’t have to become a Democrat and “turn the U.S. into Venezuela.” You can become an independent. Save your party by sending it the most powerful message you can. Our nation’s future teeters in the balance. Jack Batson is a former member of the Fairfield City Council. Reach him by email at jsbatson@prodigy.net.

zero. Non-Confederate states first elected a Black congressman in 1929 and 28 more in the next 30 years. Progress accelerated and the current Congress has 59 Black members. Obviously, the Voting Rights Act of 1964 contributed to the expansion of Black congressional membership. President Lyndon B. Johnson promoted it but again it only received congressional approval because of strong Republican support. American presidents have selected and the U.S. Senate has confirmed Black jurists to the U.S. Supreme Court twice (Thurgood Marshall-Johnson, and Clarence Thomas-President George H.W. Bush). Americans have elected Black citizens to the presidency (Barack Obama) and vice presidency (Kamala Harris). Presidents have selected and the Senate has confirmed Black citizens twice as secretary of state (Colin L. Powell and Condoleezza Rice-both President George W. Bush), secretary of defense (Lloyd Austin-President Joe Biden), and twice as attorney general (Loretta Lynch-Obama, and Eric Holder-Obama). The Progressives’ label of America as systemically racist? Ludicrous. It is obvious that racism was a substantial part of our history, but that history also identifies continual opposition to it. A small percentage of all races are racists but declaring it systemic is wrong and destructive. How can young people mentally grow and succeed if they are indoctrinated that all whites are oppressors and all Blacks are victims? What I don’t know is whether Bonta was appointed to his job by Gov. Gavin Newsom or chosen by the Democrats who control everything that goes on in Sacramento. It appears that Bonta is parroting the dogma of believers in Critical Race Theory, which holds that virtually all crime is the product of white oppression. That’s what they’re teaching our children in school, of course, and now it appears to have infected Sacramento. Bonta will be the role model for the politically correct crowd that has already taken over our public schools. Bud Stevenson, a retired stockbroker, lives in Fairfield. Baltimore officers Gaza fatally shoot man after he threatened woman with a knife
From Page One
Tribune Content Agency BALTIMORE — Baltimore police say officers fatally shot a man who was holding up a woman at knifepoint in a Broadway East home Sunday morning. At a news conference, Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said police shot and killed an unidentified man after he was seen holding a woman at knifepoint inside a home in the 1800 block of E. Lafayette Avenue Sunday morning. Harrison said officers tried to de-escalate the situation by requesting the man put down the knife and release the woman before they ultimately shot and killed the man to save the woman. The commissioner said the woman was unharmed in the attack. At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Mayor Brandon Scott commended the officers’ efforts, saying they did what they could to save the woman’s life.
“They did exactly what we want them to do: to try and preserve life at all costs,” Scott said. Police had not identified the suspect as of Sunday afternoon. Harrison said at the news conference the department plans to release footage of the responding officers’ body-worn cameras to the public. It’s the second person shot by police in the neighborhood in the past four days. A man, who the department said struck an officer with his vehicle, was shot by police on the 2200 block of E. Biddle Street on Thursday. Both the suspect and the officer survived their injuries, police said. Police statistics show that domestic violence has risen year-over-year as people were forced to work and spend more time at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

A Suisun City firefighter battles a blaze that destroyed a house on Maple Street, June 3, 2020. The fire scorched at least 300 acres and burned down or damaged numerous homes.
Budget From Page One expenditures will exceed general fund revenues in the next fiscal year, as they did in the current fiscal year. The budget will be balanced based on Measure S and new cannabis revenues, new development and one-time money from the American Rescue Plan Act.” The draft budget does not include additional funding for roads or dredging projects. It estimates a bit more than $18.923 million in total revenues and nearly $18.774 million in total expenditures. Measure S is estimated to have $3.5 million in revenue and expenditures. It will transfer nearly $2.885 million to the general fund, 64% going to the Police Department and 19% to the Fire Department. The council has approved two cannabis dispensaries to be open within the city limits. The proposed budget includes $927,400 in cannabis tax revenue. The city is also expecting to open a second hotel. The city’s transit occupancy tax revenue is estimated to increase by $337,633. Property taxes are projected to stay flat except the secured property tax, which is expected to decrease by 1.5%. The city is estimated
to receive approximately $5.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and will have to commit those funds by December 2024. Staff has identified some projects and operating budget items that may qualify under the American Rescue Plan Act funding options. The city is also looking to take control of its Transportation Development Act funding. The city currently partners with the city of Fairfield to provide transit services through Fairfield and Suisun Transit and passes on most of its share of Transportation Development Act money for FAST operations. The Transportation Development Act is a law that provides funding to be allocated to transitand non-transit-related purposes that comply with regional transportation plans. Staffing changes may include restoring, with possible American Rescue Plan Act funding options, the development services director, two police officer positions and an administrative assistant position. The complete draft plan can be found under the City Council agenda link at www.suisun.com. There is limited seating at the meeting. Reservations are needed to attend in person. More details can be found on the agenda. It will also be available on the Zoom platform and the city’s website and Facebook page.

This combination of pictures created Saturday shows the Jala Tower (highest building) housing international media outlets in Gaza city controlled by the Palestinian Hamas movement, being hit by an Israeli air strike and collapsing Saturday. Israeli air strikes pounded the Gaza Strip, killing 10 members of an extended family and demolishing a key media building, while Palestinian militants launched rockets in return amid violence in the West Bank. Israel’s air force targeted the 13-floor Jala Tower housing Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television and the Associated Press news agency. has met behind closed doors twice since the conflict erupted but failed to issue a joint statement due to U.S. opposition. “We call on the U.S. to support the Security Council in easing the situation,” Wang said. “It is important that Israel exercise restraint,” he said, calling on Palestinians to de-escalate as well. U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said it’s time to “end the cycle of violence” but singled out Hamas and other Palestinian groups in Gaza, calling on them to immediately “halt rocket attacks and other provocations.” She urged “all parties to protect medical and other humanitarian facilities, as well as journalists and media organizations.” What started off this month as hostilities between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in contested East Jerusalem has quickly escalated to an almost full-blown war between Israel and the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, dragging the U.S. back into the center of efforts to broker a cease-fire. Gaza militants have fired about 3,100 rockets at Israel since the start of hostilities. The Israeli army has struck some 1,500 targets in the blockaded enclave, going after Hamas’s missile production and launching sites as well as the underground tunnel network for its
fighters, Netanyahu said. Hamas last week signaled it was ready to end this round of fighting. Analysts say the militant group wants to consolidate political gains it’s made over the Palestinian Authority, with whom Hamas has a rivalry over the leadership of the national movement. By standing up to Israel with incessant rocket barrages against a much stronger enemy, the rulers of Gaza have scored points with the Palestinian public as defenders of their sacred city, said Ghassan Khatib, a former Palestinian cabinet minister who teaches political science at Birzeit University near Ramallah. “Their image was lifted dramatically,” Khatib said. Israel drew outrage for targeting non-combatants after it leveled a high-rise building in Gaza on Saturday that housed news outlets such as the Associated Press and Al Jazeera. Netanyahu said Israel warned occupants to evacuate the building, which he said had been used by Hamas’s military wing, before striking it. The death toll continued to climb on Sunday. More than 190 Palestinians in Gaza, including dozens of women and children, have been killed, and more than 1,000 have been injured. Ten people have died and close to 300 have been hurt in Israel.

cease-fire and understands that it made a mistake in starting this fight with us.” Biden’s support for Israel has attracted rare criticism from his own party, with some Democrats arguing the administration needs to push harder to stop the violence. On Friday, a dozen Jewish Democrats wrote to Biden demanding that the U.S. address Israel’s “deepening occupation” in Jerusalem. Democrats have been increasingly divided on Israel as some on the party’s left flank tie what they see as unjust Israeli policies toward the Palestinians to calls for racial justice at home. “If the Biden admin can’t stand up to an ally, who can it stand up to?,” tweeted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Also speaking on CBS, Rep. Adam Schiff of California said he defends Israel’s right to defend itself but that shouldn’t be “interpreted as support for Israeli settlement policy for the eviction of Palestinians from their homes.” At the rare Sunday meeting of the U.N. Security Council, held virtually, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi also took a jab at the U.S., saying that it should join the rest of the Security Council in supporting an effort to bring calm. Netanyahu from Republicans, who are already pinning the Gaza unrest on Biden. “We’ll do whatever it takes to restore order and quiet and the security of our people and deterrence,” Netanyahu told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” in a Sunday interview. “We’re trying to degrade Hamas’s terrorist abilities and to degrade their will to do this again. So it’ll take some time. I hope it won’t take long, but it’s not immediate.” The U.N. effort to push for a cease-fire comes as the U.S. works with Egypt and Qatar to broker an end to the latest bout of violence. Biden has ramped up efforts to calm the spiraling violence between Israel and Palestinian militants, including urging the protection of civilians in calls Saturday with Netanyahu and with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas. But he’s also reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself, giving Netanyahu room to maneuver for now. Similar sentiment came on Saturday from U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a call with his Israeli counterpart. The question is for how long. Hebrew and Arab media outlets have reported that Israel has rejected Egyptian attempts to broker a cease-fire for now. Prior to the fighting that started last week, Israel and Hamas fought three brutal, inconclusive wars. This round is also likely to end without a clear victor, but Israel is trying to damage Hamas as much as possible before it agrees to end the fighting, diplomats and experts say. Hamas, for its part, wants to show it can wreak damage while reclaiming the mantle of the Palestinian movement best able to stand up to Israel. “There is full support behind the government even though we are all paying a price,” said former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon. “Israel will keeping hitting Hamas hard until it begs for a

Bloomberg Wynn Resorts and Las Vegas Sands Corp., two Nevada casino operators, will tell vaccinated guests they can stop wearing masks, following new guidance from state and federal regulators. Wynn plans to begin delivering that message to customers Friday evening, trusting guests to take the appropriate precautions based on their personal vaccination status, according to a statement. Sands said that while it won’t ask vaccinated patrons to wear masks, it is still requiring staff to do so for now. MGM Resorts International, the largest casino operator on the Las Vegas Strip, is expected

She’s a hard worker.” “Part of the reason I’m doing accounting is to be able to do tax preparation,” said MartinDoike, who acknowledged that prior to enrolling at WGU “I didn’t prepare even my own” tax returns. “I need the business degree in order to, down the line, obtain CPA certification,” she added. Through the university, Martin-Doike also found an ideal internship opportunity: helping clients of the Campaign for Working Families with their tax returns. The Philadelphiabased nonprofit aims to provide low- and moderate-income individuals and families the tools they need to build financial security. “Working Families offered free tax-preparation training and a [path] to get tax-preparation certification,” Martin-Doike
to update its policy shortly. The companies are among the first to amend their masking and social-distancing policies following the revised guidance Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency said vaccinated persons could stop wearing masks both indoors and out in almost all circumstances. Late Thursday, Nevada updated its health directives, saying fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks indoors. It also said companies aren’t prohibited from asking patrons about their vaccination status. Earlier in the week, the Nevada Gaming Control Board
began granting casinos the option to lift social-distancing requirements as well. Wynn, MGM and Caesars Entertainment Inc. said they would remove capacity limits at their casinos. Caesars rose as much as 4.9% to $98.98 in New York, while Wynn gained as much as 3.2%. The others also advanced. Wynn, with a staff vaccination rate of 91% in Las Vegas, said it was removing plexiglass dividers from all table games and slot machines. MGM said it was still maintaining an 80% capacity limit and 3-foot social-distancing requirement off the casino floor, including at restaurants and pools.

They didn’t have withholding taxes taken on their benefits and they ended up owing a lot to the IRS.” Jonathan Barnes, director of volunteer engagement at the Campaign for Working Families, said Martin-Doike “stepped up in a way that really helped support the team at our Center City tax site. She did intake and tax prep and moved into a quality reviewer role; every tax return requires two sets of eyes.” Barnes also said MartinDoike “was among the brave folks willing to [work at] our tax preparation sites” despite the pandemic restrictions and precautions – and during one of the most complicated and fastchanging tax seasons in memory. “I was doing the taxes for people with five or six jobs, and people from all walks of life,” Martin-Doike said. “You get a kind of intimate
picture of someone’s life when you do their taxes. There is so much trust involved in that, and to me, it felt like a huge honor.” Martin-Doike also put some of her newfound knowledge to work during the process of looking for, and buying, the home in Philadelphia that will become her primary residence. “I have much more of a handle on financial analysis because of studying for the degree,” she said. “It has really helped.” Meanwhile, the Met’s plans to resume live performances in the fall are in doubt due to a complicated labor dispute involving multiple unions, including the one that represents musicians, Martin-Doike among them. She did perform before limited, live audiences twice last year, and on YouTube as a member of a houseboundin-quarantine string quartet that included her boyfriend, the violinist and Curtis faculty member Joel Link. So the prospect of playing in the viola section of Opera Philadelphia’s special live performance of Tosca last week at the Mann was thrilling – as well as a reminder of how profoundly the pandemic has changed everything.

Curry scores 46 points as W’s clinch eighth spot Tribune Content Agency Over the previous five weeks, as they played their best basketball of the season to cement a spot in the play-in tournament, the Warriors thought they had fixed their fourth-quarter issues. But there they were midway through the fourth quarter Sunday afternoon at Chase Center, having let a 17-point lead give way to a two-point deficit in their most important matchup of the season. With major playoff implications at stake, guard Stephen Curry saw his cue, hitting highlight-wor-
thy shots when it mattered most to power Golden State to a 113-101 win over the Grizzlies. His 30-footer with 3:17 left put the Warriors up six points. Less than two minutes later, after draining a 3-pointer to push Golden State’s lead to nine, Curry laced the ball between his legs, stepped back and nailed a 30-footer over De’Anthony Melton’s outstretched arm. As his teammates ran toward him to celebrate, Curry grabbed his jersey, unleashed a primal yell, and pounded his chest with his fist. He finished with 46 points on a career-high 36 attempts as
the Warriors clinched the eighth spot in the Western Conference, which will give them two chances to win one game in the play-in tournament and advance to the playoffs. “He’s like the Picasso of our time,” forward Juan ToscanoAnderson said. “He’s just doing his thing. . . . You can’t have a knock on him. He’s the best doing it right now. It’s fun to be a part of that.” Golden State had to wait to learn that it’ll play the Lakers on Wednesday. The Lakers and Blazer entered Sunday with identical records, and by fin-
ishing in the seventh spot in the standings the Lakers will host the Warriors. But in the immediate aftermath of Golden State’s season-best sixth straight win Sunday, it wasn’t thinking about its next opponent. This one was worth savoring. After digging an early nine-point hole, the Warriors built a 17-point cushion at the end of the third quarter, only to need late heroics from Curry to escape with a convincing victory. On an afternoon in which he edged Wizards guard Bradley Beal for his second scoring title, Curry heard a familiar chant as
‘Saturday Night Live’ parodies Michael Jordan’s competitiveness From ‘Last Dance’ quarters game with bodyguard Tribune Content Agency Remember the scene in ESPN’s “The Last Dance” when Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan lost a game tossing quarters against a wall to bodyguard John Michael Wozniak, who celebrated with a Jordan-esque shrug? “Saturday Night Live” and guest host Keegan Michael-Key certainly did. Roughly a year removed from the final episode of ESPN’s 10-part ode to MJ and the 1990s Bulls – and an earlier “SNL” digital parody of it – the NBC late-night mainstay returned to the well. With Michael-Key as Jordan and a sensational turn by Heidi Gardner as Wozniak, “SNL” lampooned the Hall of Famer’s cutthroat competitive nature, love of gambling and penchant for feeding off perceived affront the ESPN’s docuseries showcased. “Even though it was 10 hours long, there was so much left on the cutting room floor,” “Last Dance” director Jason Hehir (Mikey Day) explains, setting up the supposedly extended scene, which begins with Michael-Key’s Jordan losing a $5 bet on the quarters game and quickly devolves into a total debasement of Gardner’s Wozniak. “The thing about Michael is he didn’t just want to beat you,” teammate Dennis Rodman (Chris Redd) says, echoing a well-tread “Last Dance” theme. “He wanted to dominate you.” By the time it’s over, the bodyguard has lost more than money, all while good-naturedly trying to playing along. The Phoenix Suns’ Charles
Mauricio Dubón of the Giants is a kid at heart. Plays a kid’s game. Showcases a kid’s exuberance. Watches kids’ movies. This 26-year-old kid can be unnerving to watch because he’ll take chances other players won’t, and sometimes they’re costly mistakes. And sometimes they’re not. In Sunday’s 4-1 win in Pittsburgh, Dubón took a big chance that others wouldn’t, and it handsomely paid off for the Giants, who split a four-game series that could have been a sweep with some better relief pitching. Buster Posey had three hits, Mike Yastrzemski hit an insurance homer in the ninth and three relievers pitched shutout ball following Alex Wood’s six innings. But all the postgame buzz was about Dubón’s decision-making and execution in a first-and-third situation in the fifth inning. “I do that in Honduras when I play rec ball, coming down and trying to mess with people,” Dubón said of his play, which needed to be

he stepped to the foul line with 27.3 seconds left: “M-V-P!” In the regular-season finale, with an easier path to the playoffs hanging in the balance, Curry had made one thing certain: He deserves serious consideration for the league’s top individual honor, even if many believe Denver’s Nikola Jokic secured it weeks ago. With the Warriors nursing a six-point lead at halftime Sunday, Curry had just 13 points on 6-for-15 shooting (1-for-6 from 3-point range). In the third

efore the pandemic, you could wander into Du-par’s, on the corner of Fairfax and Third in Los Angeles, ask for a seat in a slick, red, tufted vinyl booth, and be sipping a mug of hot coffee in less than a minute. You could order a stack of the diner’s famous pancakes, fat as throw pillows, a small bowl of melted butter on the side. You could feast on dense slabs of French toast, soft tuna sandwiches, ice-cold chocolate malts, wedges of cherry pie, “big, Frisbee-shaped omelets gilded with American cheese, soft rolls as large as spaniel ears . . . Swedish meatballs on Wednesdays and roast turkey with dressing,” as Jonathan Gold wrote in the Los Angeles Times in 1994. You could, if you were in the mood, order a patty melt. Du-par’s probably didn’t invent the patty melt, but it claims to serve the original recipe. On the menu, it’s listed as “Tiny’s Classic Patty Melt: The Original Since 1932.” A beef patty, smothered in car-
amelized onions and melted Swiss, peeks out from between two slices of rye, griddled until crisp on both sides. I used to live a block from Du-par’s – which reopened with limited indoor and outdoor seating last summer – and when I was having a bad day, I ordered the patty melt with french fries. On good days, I got it with coleslaw and extra pickles. I still love that play among the rich, buttery sandwich, soft tang of the slaw and sour punch of the pickles. An Arnold Palmer on the side, a slice of pie for dessert, extra coffee if I had time to linger. Diners! In honor of diners, how about we make patty melts tonight? This recipe is a bit of a cheat, because it sidesteps the traditional “patty” for meaty, crispy mushrooms. You can use any mushrooms you like, but it’s wild mushroom season in most of the United States now, so if you see maitakes, king or black trumpets, hedgehogs or porcinis at the market, use those! Whatever ones you pick, the mushrooms will get a boost of flavor from Worcestershire sauce. Caramelized onions go in, too, of course, as
does a pretty generous amount of cheese. Pile everything between two slices of bread and fry the sandwiches in a smidge of butter until they’re golden on both sides. Slice – on the diagonal! – and serve with . . . potato chips? A short milkshake? A quickly tossed slaw or herby salad? In my humble opinion, you should never skip the pickles. As with all sandwiches, you can change up just about any element in this mushroom melt. Swiss is traditional, but use whatever melty cheese you happen to have kicking around in the fridge. I think the caramelized onions are essential, but consider instead caramelized garlic or fennel. I only ever make patty melts on rye bread, but Texas toast, multigrain, gluten-free or plain old white pullman can work, too. If you don’t cook mushrooms too often, know that they will steam first, releasing excess moisture, before they caramelize alongside the onions. Onions have some natural sugar that will help them caramelize; if you skip the onions for any reason, consider adding a pinch of sugar to the mushrooms toward the end of cooking them,
to ensure extra-crisp edges. Mushroom Patty Melts 30 minutes 4 servings The patty melt is a diner classic, but it doesn’t have to be so meaty. This version puts deeply caramelized mushrooms and onions front and center. (You can add a beef patty, too, if you want.) A splash of Worcestershire sauce adds acidity and rounds out the flavors. Use your favorite cheese and bread, but don’t skimp on the butter, which ensures the best flavor and a crispy exterior. 6 tablespoons (3 ounces) unsalted butter, divided 2 tablespoons olive oil 10 ounces mushrooms, such as cremini mushrooms or baby bella, sliced 1 large yellow onion, halved and thinly sliced 1 ⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 8 slices rye bread or another bread of choice 8 slices Swiss cheese or Gruyère cheese, or more as desired Pickles, for serving (optional) In a large (ideally 12-inch wide cast iron) skillet over high heat, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter. Add the olive oil, mushrooms, onion and
salt. Fry, stirring frequently, until the onions and mushrooms caramelize and crisp, 10 to 15 minutes, adjusting the heat as necessary if they start to burn. Remove from the heat and stir in the Worcestershire. Assemble the sandwiches: Lay 4 slices of bread onto a flat surface. Place at least 1 slice of cheese on each slice of bread. Top with a quarter of the onion-and-mushroom mixture, followed by at least 1 slice of cheese and the remaining slice of bread. Wipe the skillet out and place over medium heat. Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter, and fry the sandwiches, in batches if necessary, until the cheese has melted evenly and both sides are crisp, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Slice in half and serve hot, with pickles on the side, if desired. Apple AirTags are here
Apple’s AirTag can be personalized with an emoji or even your name, if it’s short.
Were they worth the wait? Jim Rossman
L
The Dallas Morning News
ast week, Apple finally released AirTags, which are small devices to help you find things, much like the Tile Bluetooth locator I have on my keychain. I say Apple “finally” released AirTags because they’ve been rumored for years. Heck, the box for the keychain fob Apple sells to hold the AirTag has a 2019 copyright date on it. But the company never jumps into an established market unless it thinks its offering will blow away the competition. There were plenty of MP3 players on the market before Apple released the iPod. So does the AirTag blow away the Tile locators? Yes and no.
Mentos? The AirTag ($29 or a four-pack for $99) is small, round and white plastic on one side – it looks like a Mentos candy but slightly larger. The back side is metal, and you can open it with a counterclockwise turn to expose the replaceable battery. Apple says the CR2032 battery will last about a year. You can check the battery level in the Find My app on your iOS device. Speaking of iOS devices, you have to have either an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.5 to set up and use the AirTags. Android users are out of luck. You interact with the AirTag through Apple’s Find My app, which is where you also go if you track the location of a device like an iPhone or iPad or Mac. When you load iOS 14.5, the Find My app gets a new tab for finding items that have an AirTag attached.
Setup Setting up the AirTag could not be much easier. Take it out of the box and remove the plastic covering, which has a small tab that activates the battery when you pull it out. Then place the AirTag next to your iPhone or iPad, and a small dialog box will rise up from the bottom of the screen. Press the Connect button in the dialog box. The next screen asks you to name the AirTag. I am putting mine on my keychain, so I chose Keys from the list. The next screen is where you link the AirTag to your AppleID and put in your mobile number. That’s all there is to it. The AirTag will now show up in the Find My app of any iPad or iPhone you are logged into. But while you can log into iCloud. com in a browser on any computer and
tech review use Find My iPhone to see your devices on a map, you can’t see or find AirTags through a computer. The AirTags are waterproof, so they can survive a dunk. There’s a speaker enclosed in each AirTag, but there are no holes for the sound to get out, so water can’t get in.
Finding nearby AirTags’ job is to just sit there and wait for you to lose whatever it is you are tracking. If I lose my keys at home, which happens more than I’d care to admit, I can call up Find My on my iPhone and see the keys’ last-known location on a map. If the keys are close by and you just need help finding them, you can choose to have the AirTag make a sound so you can quickly locate them. If you have an iPhone 11 or 12 model (with an Ultra Wide Band chip), you can also invoke a precision locator. It will show you with an arrow which direction to walk and tell you how many feet you are from the AirTag. My iPhone XS Max is too old to have a UWB chip, so I don’t get the cool locator arrow, but I think finding the AirTag by having it play a sound is just as good. Both of the finding methods are restricted to Bluetooth range, which can be up to 50 feet, but inside my house, it was more like 30 feet through walls. I left the AirTag at one end of my L-shaped house and walked to the other end and asked the AirTag to play the sound – it was too far away. Apple’s app asked me to “walk around” until the AirTag was in range, which is not an unreasonable request, and the AirTag started sounding when I took a few steps toward the middle of the house. When I did the same test with my Tile Pro, it was successful from the farthest reaches of the house.
Lost mode What happens if you really do lose your keys? What if you’re at the mall and you leave your keys at the checkout counter when you’re buying a big pretzel? That’s where a feature called Lost Mode comes into play. You can push a button in the Find My app and put the AirTag into Lost mode, which tells Apple to start looking for it. Every iPhone user who has activated Find My iPhone can now help you find your lost AirTag. If I’m walking down the street and my iPhone comes close enough to a lost AirTag to register the connection
(within 50 feet or so), then my iPhone will send the location to Apple’s Find My server. The user who has lost an item will get an alert on his phone listing the address where the AirTag was spotted. There are hundreds of millions of iPhones and iPads in use, and all of them can help you find your lost AirTag. This communication all happens behind the scenes without the device’s owner ever realizing it. Tile has had this feature, and it works if another Tile user comes into close contact with a lost Tile, but there are many more iPhone users than Tile users. I’m willing to bet that if you lost an AirTag at the mall, it would be found in minutes. But you would only be notified of the street address and not a specific location inside the mall. It would be up to you to retrace your steps until you get close enough to use the Find My app.
Find a lost AirTag? So what happens if you find an item with an AirTag attached? You can use your iPhone or even Android phone to pull up the owner’s information. Inside the Find My app is a button called Identify Lost Item. If you put the AirTag close to your phone, you’ll see the email address and phone number associated with the AirTag so you can notify the owner. If your Android phone has an NFC chip, holding the AirTag next to the phone will bring up a web page with the owner’s information. This is kind of like bringing a lost pet to the vet to scan for a chip. I’m not sure how many people will know how to look up this information if they find an AirTag, but I’m sure word will get out.
Fobs and such Out of the box, AirTags don’t have any way to attach to your devices. My Tile Pro has a hole, so I just attached it to my keyring. To put your AirTag on your keys or anything else – a backpack, luggage, a bike or a computer bag, for example – you are forced to buy a fob. I purchased one AirTag and Apple’s leather fob with a key ring. The AirTag costs $29, and the fob cost $35. I gritted my teeth when I pressed the Buy Now button last week, but I did so knowing that I’d be putting the fob on my keys and I wanted it to look nice. Would it have killed Apple to add a hole? I get that the design might no longer be a perfect circle, but I think it was a bad decision. Whenever Apple decides not to include a feature (like a hole), that
forces the user to look for another solution. Apple calls it a “third-party opportunity.” I bought my fob on launch day through the Apple store app and didn’t look for other fobs, but I’ve since found fobs for less than $15. Also, if you have way too much money, you can buy an AirTag with an Hermès luggage tag for $449. I’m sure there will be hundreds of cheap AirTag accessories in a month or two.
Stalking safety Apple takes user safety seriously, so it included some features to keep people from using AirTags to spy on others. It would be pretty easy to drop an AirTag in someone’s purse or backpack or even attach one to a vehicle. For $29 and with a yearlong battery life, it would be a cheap and easy way to stalk someone. Apple has included a feature that will alert an iPhone user if it appears they are being followed by an AirTag not associated with their Apple ID. Android phone users are not so lucky. Apple has no way to warn them of an AirTag that’s in close proximity to them.
Conclusions I had high hopes for the AirTag, but aside from a larger network of iPhones for finding lost AirTags, I can’t see much that would make me want to give up my Tile Pro. My Tile can even help find my iPhone if I misplace it in the house. If I double press the button on the Tile, my phone starts to ring. AirTags don’t have that feature. The precision finding is made possible by the UWB chip in new iPhones. I suspect this is why Apple delayed releasing the AirTag until now. I hope this first AirTag model is not the last, and that Apple tweaks the design or even adds new AirTags. I’d like to see a slim one that can slip in a wallet. I seem to use my Tile once every few months to locate my keys or phone. I’ll keep both on my key ring for now and see which performs better the next time I lose my keys. Pros: Small, good battery life, precision finding, a huge network of iPhones to help find lost AirTags, waterproof. Cons: Bluetooth range for nearby finding could be better and a fob is required to attach it to anything. Bottom line: There are some good features, but I don’t think AirTag is better than my Tile Pro. Jim Rossman writes for The Dallas Morning News. He may be reached at jrossman@dallasnews.com.

From left, David Pittu, Ewan McGregor, Krysta Rodriguez and Rebecca Dayan star in “Halston.”
‘Halston’ paints a fashionable portrait of a tortured genius Tribune Content Agency A meteoric rise in the fashion industry made American-born designer Halston a household name by the 1970s, as he revolutionized women’s fashion from the head down. But his fall from grace, part pride, part bad business decisions, was even swifter. By the mid-’80s, he had nothing. In “Halston,” the Netflix series that premiered Friday, Ewan McGregor stars as the famed designer who hailed from a middle-class Indiana family but became a staple at wild nights inside Studio 54 in New York City with other famous figures. “These people lived large and they lived larger-than-life lives,” director and executive producer Daniel Minahan told the Daily News of Halston and his entourage, which included Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol and muse-turned-jewelry designer Elsa Peretti. “To tell the story, we had to express the incredible genius of this character so when we take it away, you really feel it.” Halston is not always likable, and is prone to fits of rage and cruelty propelled by drugs and failure, particularly as he sees his world beginning to crumble. He shuns his friends when they get too famous for him, or when they ask for too much. He lashes out at those trying to help. He rejects the idea that anyone can do what he can do. But at the same time, you understand his anger and frustration. You’re watching a man lose everything. “It’s the story of an artist who creates himself whole cloth and then has that taken away from him,” Minahan said. “It’s about the human spirit and the soul of an artist.”
Daily Cryptoquotes
By the end of the five-episode limited series, Halston’s soul is shattered by the ups and downs of capitalism. But the journey to his AIDS-related death in 1997, at just 50 years old, is one of opulence and decadence. “They were soulmates, really,” Krysta Rodriguez, who plays Minnelli, told The News. “They stuck with each other through thick and thin.” Unlike Peretti, Halston couldn’t take credit for Minnelli’s fame. Instead, the two soared together. But “Halston” focuses too on the quieter moments of their friendship, the dinners at home and the stern, but well-meaning lectures in the back of limos. His and Peretti’s relationship was more volatile. “It’s a love affair without the physicality. It’s a friendship. It’s a mentorship,” Rebecca Dayan, who plays the model and Tiffany’s designer who died earlier this year, told The News. “He was probably one of the great loves of her life in the way that he understood her (like) very few men (did) and gave her that push to be creative, to be who she wanted to be.” Their collaborations were legendary but so, too, were their fights, including an infamous one during which she threw a fur coat into the fire at his townhouse. “Eventually, because of all the things that happened, they grew to the point where it was too much having both of them in one space,” Dayan told The News. “They had to take their separate routes.” And then there’s David Mahoney, the CEO of Norton Simon, Inc., who lost Halston’s company in a poorly planned business move. Mahoney, who funded the designer as he rose,
could easily be blamed for his collapse as well. “It was in talking to (Minahan) and then eventually (executive producer Ryan Murphy) that I realized that Mahoney wasn’t just the bad guy in the story,” Bill Pullman, who plays the stoic businessman, told The News. “He really had a great sense of wanting to steward someone who had the creativity that Halston had so he could do what he did best. That was his job, to let the people that he’s engaged do the best job they can.” Mahoney, for a minute, stood atop the mountain with Halston as the pair expanded the fashion empire to JCPenney, making Halston designs accessible to everyone. But it was Mahoney, too, at the helm when Norton Simon was taken over by Esmark in 1983. A year later, Halston was tossed out, paid for the next five years not to work. “It was a Hail Mary pass,” Pullman said of the sale. “They were sinking and he wanted to do something bold.” So inexorably tied were Halston the man and Halston the brand that the downfall of the latter took down the former as well. The designer fell apart as his empire fell apart and, internally, as his body began to fall apart, ravaged by AIDS. Two years after he was diagnosed, he died. But for several decades, in the spotlight of New York, Halston burned brighter than almost anyone. “We explore those moments of the difference between genius and mania and what you sacrifice for your art. Is it still art if no one can see it?” Rodriguez said. “They were people who were broken and had to use their artistry to survive.”

Zumba marks 20 years of dance-fitness craze ‘It could only have been born in Miami’
Tribune Content Agency MIAMI — It started with VHS tapes. And now it’s taken over the world. Twenty years since its founding, Zumba has helped millions dance their way into fitter, happier lives, says co-founder and CEO Alberto Perlman. Officially launched in Aventura by Colombian dancer Alberto “Beto” Perez, Zumba reached $20 million in video sales via TV infomercials by 2003. By 2012, the New York Times reported Zumba was valued at $500 million. It now has 250 employees at its Hallandale Beach headquarters. “The stories you hear are amazing – it’s not what you hear in a normal fitness class,” Perlman said. “It’s people who have survived an illness, or stories of people who moved to a new city and didn’t know anyone and Zumba created a community for them, or someone who was able to leave an abusive relationship.” Today, Zumba, the business, works via licensing its material to instructors who pay a monthly fee to teach classes. Perlman says the company’s biggest growth market is in Asia, which he attributed to the region’s rising middle class. Zumba’s Japanese Instagram page has nearly 15,000 followers. “It’s nonstop in those markets – I don’t think you’ll find a gym there that doesn’t have Zumba,” Perlman said. The Miami Herald spoke with Perlman to learn about the evolution of the dance-fitness craze 20 years later, how it survived the pandemic, and what the next 20 years might look like. His remarks have been edited for clarity and brevity. Q. How has Zumba changed over the past two decades? A. The original Zumba class
Joe Raedle/Getty Images/TNS file (2014)
First Lady Michelle Obama, right, dances in a Zumba class along with children and actor Mario Lopez during a visit to the Gwen Cherry Park NFL/YET Center in Miami, Florida, Feb. 24, 2014. hasn’t changed that much, but what changes is the the type of music we use. When we came on the scene, reggaeton did not exist, and as soon as we started hearing these sounds coming out of Puerto Rico, we said, ‘These are perfect for Zumba.’ We were the first ones to bring reggaeton into the mainstream. As music evolves, Zumba evolves – you’re dancing to popular music, and that always keeps you coming back. Q. How does Zumba compete with new exercise trends on the scene? A. Most fitness programs usually live in the space of, ‘We’re better from a calorie-burn perspective, or from a fitness perspective.’ But if you only live in that physical space, someone is going to come along and will build a better mousetrap. Think about the Thighmaster in the ‘90s, or 8 Minute Abs – someone is going to come up with seven-minute abs. Zumba is similar to yoga in that there is emotion – in yoga you think of zen or flow state. In Zumba we call it F.E.J.: freeing electrifying joy. You get lost
in the music, you’re having so much fun that all other thoughts are gone, you’re just there, present in the moment. And the other piece is the community. In yoga it’s similar as well – there’s a pilgrimage to India, or some sort of yoga shrine. In Zumba, there’s a convention every year, and it’s a magical place. Physical plus emotional plus community is why Zumba is a forever brand. Q. What is the significance of Miami to the Zumba story? A. It’s where we live. It could have only been born here because of the cultural aspect of Miami, the openness to Latin music, Latin influence – Miami is capital of Latin America. Beto’s dream growing up in Cali was to go to Miami. Zumba started when my cousins, my mom, everyone I knew was taking Beto’s class here in Aventura – it wasn’t even called Zumba then, he called it “rhumba-cise.” At that moment something sparked the idea: What if we take this to the world, put it on a VHS tape – this was 2001 – and teach Zumba at home via
VHS. What we realized is that the community and class was the true Zumba experience, so we started training instructors, who would come from all over the country and go to Miami and train in Zumba. But Miami is still the root and culture of Zumba. Zumba is Miami. Q. How did the Covid-19 pandemic affect Zumba? A. We had some pretty dark moments at the beginning. In February 2020, since we have an operation in China, we started getting some real reports of things happening, and instructors calling in and saying this is serious. So we started preparing for it by saying, ‘If you want to become an instructor, you can train online,’ and we created a livestream version of our course. Then in March, when lockdowns started, we told instructors that we were going to create something so you can teach from home to people at home. And we challenged our technology team – we have over 50 developers – we said in 60 days we need a solution for instructors to teach digitally, take payments digitally, and manage students, and they did it in 60 days. It was incredible and amazing to see our instructors and the community migrate to online. You can see what people were saying about the classes – it was a very powerful moment to emerge as a virtual brand. But now we’re trying to get them back into classes, so after the virtual moment, we started seeing outdoor classes. So we had instructors teaching in parking lots and parks – and they still are. Now we’re finally going back into the exercise rooms, and seeing the classes come back is an emotional thing. To be physically back in the Zumba class, sometimes you see everyone crying to be
back – it’s very powerful. Q. What will the next 20 years of Zumba look like? A. We’re constantly enhancing our technologies to make our instructors more successful. We believe people don’t need another screen in their life. We want them to get together in person, and we don’t want humanity to lose that. Mental health has also come up as a big topic in how Zumba helps – we want to create more moments to help people through any mental health issues. We’ve also created a new brand, STRONG Nation. It’s a high-intensity training program – but we created a program where the music is scored to the workout. So we create these routines, then create music that completely matches the routines. We want to have an epic feeling, really feeling like a bad-ass. So you’re going to see more STRONG Nation in the years to come. We also created the Zumba music lab. It’s a production house where we create our own music. We’re working with some the best writers and producers in the world, and now record labels are coming and saying they want to launch our songs. Q. What is the best way to convince someone to try Zumba? A. Go with them. Say, ‘I’ll do it with you. I’ll go to the gym with you and if you don’t laugh the whole time and never do it again’ – you know, it’s hard not to smile when you’re in a Zumba class. And a good instructor will notice people who are shy – they might be going there and not be sure what they’re getting into. And the instructor will make them feel warm and special. And when that happens, that’s when they get hooked and their life starts to change.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CITY OF SUISUN CITY, CALIFORNIA, ADDING CHAPTER 12.03 OF THE SUISUN CITY MUNICIPAL CODE ESTABLISHING A 5-YEAR STREET CUT MORATORIUM IN THE CITY OF SUISUN CITY NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT the City Council of the City of Suisun City will consider an ordinance adding Chapter 12.03 of the Suisun City Municipal Code establishing a 5-year street cut moratorium in the City of Suisun City. The City of Suisun City owns and maintains a roadway network of approximately 76 miles. Given that a paved street is a unique public resource held in trust for the benefit of the public, the City desires to maintain the ride-ability and appearance of new street surfaces, prolong pavement integrity, and minimize pavement degradation. One way to achieve this goal is to enact a 5year street cut moratorium which will minimize roadway excavations, and encourage contractors and utility companies and franchisees to effectively plan and review potential conflicts with new streets as well as with recently reconstructed or resurfaced streets. The City will endeavor to coordinate its Capital Improvement Programs with utility companies and franchisees with facilities in, on, under or above the public right-of-way. Under the street cut moratorium guidelines, utility companies and franchises, will be required to plan well enough in advance to determine alternate methods of making necessary repairs to avoid excavating in newly resurfaced streets. No excavation will be allowed in streets under a moratorium. However, this prohibition will not apply in the event of a new development or an emergency that endangers life or property, in which event the permittee shall notify the City and apply for an encroachment permit for “emergency work.” Moreover, the City may grant a waiver under the following circumstances: a) Interruption of essential utility service, b) Work that is mandated by city, state, or federal law, c) Service for buildings where no other reasonable means of providing service exists, and d) Situations in which no alternative course of action exists, as determined by the Engineer in writing setting forth the facts giving rise to the conclusion that no alternative exists. The City Council will consider adoption of proposed ordinance at a public hearing, which will take place during a regular meeting of the Suisun City Council at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the Suisun City Council Chambers, 701 Civic Center Boulevard, Suisun City, California. All interested persons are invited to attend said public hearing and comment upon any proposed action, express opinions or submit evidence for or against the matter as outlined above. Pursuant to California Government Code Section 65009, if you challenge any of the above actions in court, you may be limited to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at the public hearing described in this notice, or included in written correspondence delivered to the City Clerk, 701 Civic Center Blvd., Suisun City, California, 94585, prior to, the public hearing.
Any interested person may file a written protest with the City Clerk prior to the conclusion of the Public Hearing, or, having previously filed a protest, may file a written withdrawal of that protest. A written protest shall state all grounds of objection and a protest by a property owner shall contain a description sufficient to identify the property owned by such property owner. At the Public Hearing, all interested persons shall be afforded the opportunity to hear and be heard.
If you have any questions or comments regarding this matter or wish to review the proposed ordinance, please contact the Deputy City Clerk at (707) 421-7300 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, City Hall is closed on Fridays.

W’s: Green came close to triple-double From Page B1 quarter, he scored 17 of Golden State’s 31 points to help put it up 86-69, only to outdo himself in the game’s defining moments as Memphis’ best defensive option on him – forward Dillon Brooks – watched from the bench after fouling out with 6:12 left.
“I felt like the second and third quarters, I got a lot of good looks,” Curry said. “Obviously, in the fourth quarter, it was go time. At that point, you don’t think about it. You just let it fly.” Even though Curry deserves much of the credit for the Warriors locking up that crucial No. 8 spot, he still needed some
help. Forward Andrew Wiggins scored 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, forward Draymond Green had a near-tripledouble (14 points, nine rebounds, nine assists) and guard Jordan Poole chipped in 15 points off the bench. Head coach Steve Kerr, intent on sticking with the
lineups that keyed the Warriors’ recent 13-5 stretch, only played eight players. Curry logged 40 minutes, which showed that Kerr is willing to lean on his best player when the situation necessitates it. “He’s gone above and beyond this season,” Kerr said. “He’s never been better.”
A’s: Felt frustration over umpiring calls From Page B1 Bassitt said. Bassitt has a knack for lending color commentary to the games he starts, but he bit his tongue when asked his thoughts on some controversial umpiring and replay reviews that clouded the game early for the A’s. “I’m usually a man of a lot of words. Right now, I don’t know what the hell to say without angering people. I have no idea how we won,” Bassitt said. “Any baseball fan, anyone watching a game that actually has an opinion, knows how bad the first couple innings were. I’ll leave it at that.” Frustrations with the umpiring started to bubble in the second inning, when Matt Chapman went for second base on his RBI single and was called out. Replay didn’t show shortstop Andrelton Simmons lay down a clear-cut tag on Chapman, but the call was upheld – eliminating an opportunity to add on. Bassitt had to endure
the replay sting in the next half inning. Miguel Sanó appeared to be hit on the hand with a pitch, but Bassitt argued the ball hit the base of Sanó’s bat, as the ball traveled fair and well down the first base line for what could have been a turned double play for the A’s. Having used their challenge earlier, the A’s couldn’t ask for a review. Minnesota outfielder Max Kepler made it pay with a go-ahead, threerun home run on a mistake pitch over the plate. The A’s are 1-of-8 on challenges this year. Frustrations boiled over in the third inning when, with the bases loaded, Ramón Laureano made a tough catch in center off Kepler’s drive and nailed Jorge Polanco at home. The Twins challenged the call, and the call was reversed when replay showed catcher Sean Murphy didn’t get the tag on Polanco in time. Laureano had suited up for his next at-bat and hovered in the on-deck
circle during the replay review. He shouted at umpires from the dugout steps when the crew in New York reversed the call, determining Murphy’s tag was late and the Twins extended their lead to 4-1.
hit day and gave the A’s a 6-4 lead. Andrus and the A’s offense’s resiliency rubbed off on Bassitt, who was flustered by the questionable calls. Bassitt settled in and finished his fiveinning outing allowing those four runs only with six hits, four strikeouts and two walks. The counter punch: After not allowing a home run in any of his 17 appearances this season, Jake Diekman gave up the go-ahead home run to Sanó in Saturday’s loss and allowed the game-tying, two-run home run to Andrelton Simmons in the eighth inning on Sunday. It was a sign of some fatigue for a core of bullpen arms that have been used in a majority of games – Diekman, Yusmeiro Petit and Lou Trivino are among appearance leaders in MLB. Sergio Romo and Burch Smith pitched scoreless innings before the late-inning dramatics. Trivino recorded his seventh save. A’s come out on top: Bad luck turned to a bit of good luck in the ninth inning when Laureano singled with one out and Josh Donaldson’s error turned Matt Olson’s checkswing bouncer into a scoring opportunity. Chapman struck out swinging, but Laureano scored the go-ahead run when the pitch ricocheted to the backstop. “Talk about resilience,” Melvin said. “That’s a hard-fought win after last night’s game. People keep asking me about ‘How do you respond from something like yesterday?’ These guys keep doing it. A lot of heart on this team.”
The comeback: Chad Pinder kicked off the fifth inning with a double and Murphy singled to score him. Elvis Andrus – who entered the game 8-for-23 over his last seven games after a cold start – poked a single the other way and Canha singled to load the bases and force Twins starter Kenta Maeda out of the game with the score 4-3. Seth Brown hit a ground ball down the third base line and Andrus flexed his base running IQ, forcing catcher Ben Rortvedt into interference during the run down. Andrus embellished the contact with a little flop, but the ruling tied the game. Not the first smart base running for Andrus, who provoked and scored on a balk against the Boston Red Sox. “He’s very clever, he stole two runs on this trip,” manager Bob Melvin said. “He plays with so much energy and positivity that rubs off. When you’re going through a frustrating game, to have a guy that’s constantly positive and talking in the dugout is really settling for the rest of the guys.” Chapman’s sac fly scored the goahead run and an infield hit in the seventh inning completed his three-
Giants: Finally held onto late lead From Page B1 like Brandon. “If I overthrow it or the guy gets safe, I get my head chopped off,” Dubón said. “But it ended up working. I take pride in my instincts.” An impressed Posey said, “It’s not a play you see every day. I thought Dubi did a great job, No. 1, catching the ball – I didn’t make a great throw – and, No. 2, controlling the runner back to first and making

a really strong throw to third. That’s a hard one.” It wasn’t Dubón’s only defensive highlight of the game. Not even of the inning. After Frazier opened with a single, Kevin Newman hit a foul popup that right fielder Yastrzemski and first baseman Darin Ruf tried to chase down, but it was Dubón who went in a full sprint to make the catch, leaping into the protective netting separating the

field from the stands. Which was more impressive to Dubón? “I think the foul territory one,” said Dubón, whose infield defense has immensely improved this year, including in games when he fills in for Crawford at short. “That was a little tough, knowing where the wall was and having three guys coming for the ball. That was a lot harder than the firstand-third one.” For the third time in
