WASHINGTON — There’s “no doubt” the U.S. has undercounted its number of deaths from Covid-19, which now stand at more than 581,000, President Joe Biden’s top medical adviser said. But Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that a University of Washington analysis published May 6 that the true toll is probably over 900,000 is “a bit more than I would have thought.”

True frogs have moist skin, and they must live in or near water. They are also better than toads at jumping. They can jump more than 10 times their length in distance.

Frogs, toads

They’re country cousins with different lifestyles The Washington Post To some, they’re cute personalities in kids’ movies and books. To others they look slimy and warty. But by taking time to observe, you’ll find that frogs and toads are amazing amphibians. All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads, say naturalists. Nature can be complicated, so let’s dig deeper. Scientists don’t make a distinction between frogs and toads. They all belong to the largest amphibian order called Anura, meaning the adults are “without a tail.” Frogs are an important part of our ecosystem, said Brooks Paternotte, director of the Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills, Maryland. “They’re the ‘canary in the coal mine.’” That expression refers to a now-abandoned practice of taking caged canaries into mines. The birds would react quickly to poisonous gases, alerting miners to the danger. Like those canaries, frogs let us know when our environment needs help. Frogs thrive with plenty of insects to eat and an abundance of healthy ponds, marshes or other wetlands to lay their eggs. “If you don’t hear frogs around their normal habitats on spring evenings, that’s a signal that something is wrong in the area,” Paternotte said. There are more than 7,000 species of frogs in the world, about 100 of which are in the United States. Found everywhere except Antarctica, frogs are grouped into three basic categories. True frogs have moist skin as they must live in or near water. Tree frogs have sticky pads on their feet for climbing. True toads have dry bumpy skin, are more drought tolerant and live

True toads have dry bumpy skin and live mostly on land. All toads and some frogs excrete poison that can harm predators. This Eastern American toad does so from large beanshaped glands on its head. mostly on land, but need access to healthy water for egg-laying. Probably the easiest way to tell the difference between a frog from a toad is by looking at the hind legs and how they move. Toads use their short, squatty legs to hop or walk. Frogs have strong hind legs - longer than the rest of their body, said Sara Hasenstab, a biologist in the National Zoo’s herpetology department. Frogs seem like champion jumpers, reaching more than 10 times their length in distance. Imagine if you could jump 10 times your height from a standing position. A kid who is four feet tall could jump more than the length of a school bus! Scan wetlands looking for frog eggs and tadpoles. Frog eggs are in clusters, while toad eggs form long narrow strands. Frogs need gentle slopes to the water so they can get in and out easily. Toads are often found in backyard gardens, on a forest floor, or camouflaged in leaves and tree stumps. It’s mating season now for many frogs, so you can hear the males calling in the evening. “Toads may even be on your steps, looking for moths under outdoor lights,” Hasenstab said.

Business owners set to talk with city about spending in downtown area Daily Republic Staff

drnews@dailyrepublic.net

FAIRFIELD — Business owners are scheduled to meet this week with city staff to help determine how to spend money that’s designated for the downtown area. The meeting will take place Thursday at the Downtown Theatre, 1035 Texas St. At issue is money set aside in the Parking and Business Improvement Area fund. The city’s downtown figures prominently in the Heart of Fairfield plan. City leaders seek over the long term to revamp Fairfield’s core business area – from West Texas Street through the downtown along Texas Street – from a primarily strip commercial area to one that mixes businesses and housing to take advantage of mass transit options located nearby and to make the plan area more pedestrianand bicycle-friendly. Recent work to update Allan Witt Park falls within the scope of the Heart of Fairfield plan, with the park serving not only as a gateway into the plan area but as a major community asset. A similar meeting between city officials and business owners happened April 8. That session was designed to build better relations, identify business owner concerns and determine their interests for use of the PBIA money, City Manager Stephan Chatwin wrote in a memo to the City Council dated April 21. Chatwin said more than 10 business owners and representatives from each city department were present at the Downtown Theatre. An overarching concern raised by the business owners was how homelessness affects the downtown area and their businesses, Chatwin said in his report. He characterized the meeting as productive. “A number of great ideas came out of the conversation focused on use of PBIA funds,” he said. He did not elaborate on those ideas in his written report. He did report that additional meetings would be scheduled. Chatwin in his report said city staff members “recognize there is a lot of work needed to earn the trust of businesses.” This meeting is designed to build on the

Minor forgetfulness, such as forgetting where you parked your car, is pretty normal, according to Lisa Genova.

Worried about your forgetfulness? This Harvard-trained neuroscientist may put you at ease

Tribune Content Agency What, you lost your glasses – again? And you have no idea where you parked your car? And the name of your favorite sitcom – it’s on the tip of your tongue, but you just can’t quite remember it? Fear not. Such minor forgetfulness is pretty normal, neuroscientist Lisa Genova told an audience of more than 750 people at a recent Zoom event, hosted by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library. Genova, a Harvard-trained neuroscientist, is the author of five bestselling novels, all centering on people with brain maladies. “Still Alice,” her bestselling novel about a woman with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, was made into an Academy Award-winning film. Her new book, “Remember,” her first book of nonfiction, delves into why we remember, why we forget and how the brain works. Here are highlights from her recent talk. This has been edited for space; you can watch the full talk at supporthclib. org/lisa-genova.

On why she started writing Becoming a novelist was really accidental. My interest in Alzheimer’s began in a very personal way: My grandmother had it. I was the neuroscientist in my big Italian family and I figured I would learn everything I could about Alzheimer’s. I read everything, the scientific research papers, and the clinical texts, and a lot of the caregiving manuals, and everything was helpful – to a point. What was missing for me was the

perspective of the person who had it. I thought, fiction is a place where you get to walk in someone else’s shoes. I wish there were a story written about someone with Alzheimer’s told from her perspective. And then I thought, well, someday I’ll write that book.

On ‘normal forgetting’ I have been talking about Alzheimer’s for over a decade, and I found that the conversation invariably drifts from Alzheimer’s to normal forgetting – but people don’t know what’s normal. We have this conception that memory is a perfect thing. It wasn’t even when we were 20, but I don’t think we even noticed or cared when we were 20. But when we’re 50, people start getting really scared and anxious. So with this (nonfiction) book, I could reassure them and explain why they are really normal – how we remember and how we normally forget and what we can do to improve our memory.

On why we forget things The No. 1 first ingredient for creating a memory that’s going to last beyond the moment is attention. You cannot remember something if you don’t pay attention. I think a lot of us think of memory as a video camera and it’s recording a constant stream and all you have to do to retrieve something is hit “play.” That is not memory. You’re only going to keep what you pay attention to. So when your keys go missing or your phone or your glasses – and we do these

things every day – this likely doesn’t involve your memory at all. This is a symptom of distraction – you did not pay attention to putting your glasses here. You’re texting, you’re thinking about the 12 things you need to do, and you’re not paying attention to what you’re doing. You can’t create a memory of what you don’t pay attention to.

On the different kinds of memory There’s the memory for the stuff we know, the facts and information, like the stuff you learn in school. And there’s the memory for the stuff that happens, the episodic memory. This is the story of your life. There’s muscle memory, which doesn’t actually live in your muscles but lives in your brain. This is the stuff you can do – ride a bike, brush your teeth, drive the car. There’s also the memory for what you plan to do later. For something that I remember that happened, that will change over time with every time I retell it. Every time I recall it, I have an opportunity to add something to it, subtract something. Maybe my mood is different now, maybe I can interpret it differently. Maybe I heard something on the news related to this thing that happened. I can slide that in, as well. This is not necessarily consciously done. When I go to restore that memory, the new memory is what gets stored and it overwrites the old memory. We think that those memories are accurate, but they’re probably not. See Forget, Page A8

Florida artist paints portraits of those who died of Covid-19 Tribune Content Agency Last October, St. Petersburg, Florida, artist Margaret Bayalis, feeling burned out by the pandemic, was grappling with how to respond to it visually. She came up with the idea to offer free painted portraits of people who died from Covid-19 to their loved ones. She reached out on the social media app Next Door and immediately got a few requests. Soon, word spread and she was getting queries from as far as Hawaii, Portugal and India. “I never dreamed it would go so far when I started” Bayalis said. To date, she’s created more than 50 portraits. Along the way, she created a collage of them. “The numbers are upsetting,” she said. “When I look at my

collage, it seems like so many, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the numbers even in Florida. It’s overwhelming.” Primarily a landscape painter, switching to portraiture was a “journey” that helped her pick up a new technique. In January, she started a Facebook group called Faces Not Numbers and invited other artists to join her mission. So far, more than 20 artists have joined and the page has 200 members. The group’s mission is to “use the healing power of art to create memorial portraits, free of charge, of individuals lost to Covid-19 in an effort to comfort families and raise awareness of the pandemic’s toll on life.” Bayalis has made connections with the people See Artist, Page A8

I recommend seeing a licensed marriage counselor together. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@ creators.com.

Today’s birthday Not only do you have a clear vision for the good of the group; you have the amazing talent of managing and leading others in a way that’s virtually undetectable. You and your friends will help one another without keeping score. Nurturing relationships naturally come together. Cancer and Sagittarius adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 7, 30, 11, 20 and 15.

you, you’ll also help someone else. The opposite is also true, so take precautions against working too hard and doing too much. The burnout would not only be your own. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Because everyone is doing the same thing, it seems acceptable to miss the point. You’ll step back, only to see how appalling certain “normal” behaviors really are. Ultimately, this clearsightedness will lead to change. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It’s acceptable to make the wrong choice. People do it every day. Holding compassion in

your heart for human error allows you to learn quickly. Wrong choices lead to right choices. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21). The person who challenges your ideas is helping you broaden and strengthen your mind. The challenger could come in many forms – gentle, antagonistic, intelligent, thuggish. There’s something to learn from all. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19). As for the thing that is weighing on you . . . don’t forget that you are part of the equation that gives it a particular kind of gravity. Change your position or drop it. The thing weighs the same, though not to you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20Feb. 18). You’ll suddenly see the answer to a puzzle. It was there all along, of course, mixed in with the other pieces, just waiting for you to pick it out. Once seen, it’s so obvious you can never unsee it – a perfect fit. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). A quiet joy lightens your step now. You are buoyed by your undertakings, honored by your responsibilities, and you feel the full gift of your current position.

clubs. You hold Q-J-3 of clubs. Which club should you play? There is only one right answer: the jack. When going third hand high, so you might even win the trick, play the bottom of your equal cards. Why? Suppose partner has the king and declarer takes your jack with the ace. If it is beyond your partner to work out that you must have the queen, get a new partner before the next trick begins! Why would declarer win the jack with the ace if he could have taken the trick with the queen? That isn’t always the end of the defense, though – as in this deal. South had a close decision after his partner’s two-spade raise. He knew from West’s double that the opposing high cards would be badly placed, but South understandably felt that he had too much to pass. West guessed well to lead the club two. Marvel’s ‘Loki’ series to debut 2 days early Tribune Content Agency Here’s a little magic from Marvel’s God of Mischief. The highly anticipated “Loki” series will debut on Disney+ two days earlier than expected on June 9, with weekly installments continuing to be released on Wednesdays from there. The announcement was made in a video Wednesday by actor Tom Hiddleston, who stars as Loki. “I’ve noticed that in these long superhero montages, Loki tends to get a bit left out, even though he’s arguably incredibly heroic himself,” Hiddleston said. “You know, cunning. Charming. I could go on, but maybe

why don’t I just prove it to you? Wednesdays are the new Fridays.” “Loki” is the third series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” which both debuted earlier this year. Both of those series released weekly episodes on Fridays. The morally questionable Loki has long been a fan favorite in the Marvel movies, with Hiddleston appearing in multiple “Thor” and “Avengers” films as the character. The new “Loki” show, which also stars Owen Wilson and Gugu MbathaRaw, picks up after the events of the 2019 movie “Avengers: Endgame.”

id you notice how many of the Jan. 6 violent insurrectionists are attached to end-of-the-world prophecies? I have a question. How is violence supposed to usher in the Kingdom of God? This is yet another example of the misuse of religion. Angered, I wrote a complete column on the reasons why I doubt there’s going to be a Battle of Armageddon and associated catastrophes. You see, I was raised in a mainline Protestant church in which I was taught the Second Coming. I didn’t realize until much later how conservative our mainline theology was. I’ve since grown away from that aspect of Christianity. But I’m going to spare you, dear readers, because I think most of you aren’t interested. I showed the column to some Jack Batson friends and got raspberries back. If you are interested, email me and I’ll send you the column. Still, it’s frustrating for me to see how religion is misused. Farfetched and ridiculous stories about how President Donald Trump was the 45th president and how Isaiah 45 describes a pagan savior of Jews in ancient Babylon completely ignore Jesus’ warnings about false prophets and wolves in sheep’s clothing. What a spectacle to see Evangelical Christians flock enthusiastically to an incompetent charlatan and tower of sin. So what to write instead? We live in truly historic times. I predict that high school textbooks will record them. America is being shaken by two huge earthquakes: Black Lives Matter and the descent toward authoritarianism of a political party that is 160 years old. Not much still flickers in my memory about my college studies. But one book on the causes of the Civil War does. Historian Allan Nevins summarized the cause of the Civil War so clearly I subsequently taught it for 30 years: The South seceded from the Union due to “fear of abolition and eventual race adjustment.” Abraham Lincoln’s famous statement that “this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free” meant abolition to the South. When Lincoln got elected, they vamoosed. But what did Nevins mean by “race adjustment”? I think we’re looking at the final chapter of it right now. The fairly complete story of our racist past is now coming out for all to see as well as how brutal enforcement was and is. Notice even how ads on TV show race adjustment, that is, social equality with racially mixed couples. The second catastrophe we are watching is the radicalism of the GOP. Insanity has almost fully gripped the Republican Party, cementing its conversion from a democratic party into an authoritarian party. Let’s not mince words. Another elected term for Donald Trump and the GOP would end the great experiment this country has worked on for 240 years. Can ordinary people rule themselves without violence and without self-appointed “betters”? Looking at the sweep of history, the default government we see is government by strongman and oppression. Will America slink back to ordinariness? No more “city on the hill” for the world to admire? Nothing exceptional about America? While the economy has snapped back smartly due to the remarkable rate of vaccinations, a cancer eats at the soul of America – the Republican Party. Look at the astonishing evidence. A total of 146 Republicans, a majority of Republicans in the U.S. Congress, voted to reject the lawful, certified results of the 2020 presidential election. The reason? Donald Trump insisted he won, even though he lost the Electoral College, the popular vote and 60 court rulings. In other words, “We lost, but we’re not going to accept a loss.” Do I need to emphasize how illegal and revolutionary that is? It’s a fundamental rejection of democracy. Yes, the fascist Big Lie has come to America, and predictably, some people believe. A CNN poll recently reported that 70% of Republicans believe Joe Biden didn’t really win. Why not? A president said it, a political party says it, Fox News says it as does One America News and Newsmax. No, it’s not the end of the world, but we teeter on the cusp of the end of the U.S. as a republic based on democratic principles. Jack Batson is a former member of the Fairfield City Council. The appellate court ruling was not surprising for several reasons. First, California courts have generally sided with governors facing legal challenges. A few years back, for instance, the state Supreme Court gave then-Gov. Jerry Brown a pass when he employed a legally questionable process to place a criminal justice proposal on the ballot. Second, judges at all levels are aware that the governor controls how much money will be allocated to the courts. Finally, the three justices who issued last week’s decision all were high-ranking members of previous governors’ staffs – two worked for Brown and one for George Deukmejian – so they naturally incline toward upholding executive authority. Newsom will likely prevail when the issue hits the state Supreme Court. Whether he will prevail when his performance as California’s one-man band is placed before voters is less certain. However it turns out, California’s experiment in quasi-parliamentary government will be grist for political scientists, political historians and pundits for many years to come. They should weigh whether emergency powers meant to cope with relatively brief calamities such as earthquakes or riots should be extended into months- or even years-long expansions of executive power. Contractor set to start traffic safety project in Fairfield Daily Republic Staff

DRNEWS@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — Several streets downtown will be closed overnight starting Monday as a contractor begins work on a traffic safety project linked to the Heart of Fairfield plan. Crews will close portions of Texas, Webster, Jackson and Madison streets at 9 p.m. Monday to work on the bollards traffic safety project, the city reports. Work will continue until 5 a.m. Tuesday. Bollards are posts used to divert traffic. The City Council approved the plans and specifications and awarded a $319,500 contract April 20 to Kerex Engineering Inc. for the Heart of Fairfield Bollards Project. Funding comes from the Intergovernmental Loan Fund.

Council members approved the hiring of a design and engineering firm Feb. 2 along with the purchase of crash-rated, removable bollards as part of the Heart of Fairfield project. The projected cost was $199,534 with payment from the city’s Capital Streets Fund. The bollards would be used largely for special events. The bollards, with decorative sleeves, were expected to cost about $127,000 plus shipping and tax, according to a staff report to the council. The council agreed to suspend competitive bidding in making the purchase. Bennett Engineering Services of Roseville was approved to be hired to prepare engineering and design services for where the bollards would be located on Texas Street.

Agency extends fire danger warning for Solano, Bay Area Daily Republic Staff

DRNEWS@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — A fire danger warning in place through the weekend was extended Sunday to Tuesday due to fires that sparked across Solano County and much of the greater Bay Area region. The fire danger warning, known as a Red Flag Warning, was in place from 3:45 a.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Monday. It had initially been set to begin at 11 p.m. Friday. Officials with the National Weather Service extended the warning Sunday to 6 p.m. Tuesday for East Bay hills and valleys and for the North Bay mountains. Dry winds, high temperatures and low humidity combined with parched conditions over the course of the weekend to create a high danger of wildfires across Solano

County and a large swath of Northern California. A separate wind advisory from the National Weather Service was in place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Gusty north to east winds, low humidity and unseasonably dry fuels will resulted this weekend in what the weather service characterizes as “critical fire weather conditions.” The strongest winds are expected along the west side of the Sacramento Valley and through what the weather service describes as “favorably oriented gaps and canyons” in the surrounding foothills. Fires that develop during these conditions are more likely to spread rapidly, the weather service reports. The agency discourages outdoor burning during what it describes as critical fire weather conditions.

Hedrick retired from the University of California, Davis. Riding a trike is second nature since many people use bikes to travel the UC Davis campus. A knee injury convinced him the trike would be a better choice. He purchased it from a former Paradise Valley Estates resident. The riders tout the safety of the trikes as the body is the center of gravity and close to the ground. Hedrick almost got clipped by a car and

quickly changed his yellow rectangle flag for more colorful and bigger decorations. Ed Williams, a retired Navy captain, said he had not ridden a bike since he was a teen. “I used to walk by myself. This is nice company,” he said. The pedalers welcome other recumbent trike fans who live at Paradise Valley Estates. There are no women in the informal group, yet. Cheney From Page One name during his appearance on Fox News’s “Su nday Mor n i ng Futures” when asked about the campaign to oust Cheney over her dogged efforts to denounce Trump’s baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen. “Any member can take whatever position they believe in. . . . What we’re talking about is a position in leadership,” McCarthy said, adding: “As conference chair, you have one of the most critical jobs as a messenger going forward.” Cheney has accused Trump and others who have spread the election falsehoods of “turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.” She survived a previous vote among fellow Republicans in the wake of her outspoken support for Trump’s impeachment after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol but has refused to bend to the will of McCarthy and others who have since affirmed their loyalty to Trump. McCarthy on Sunday said another vote on Cheney was imminent. It could come as early as Wednesday, when the House returns to session and the Republican conference is scheduled to meet. It was the first time that McCarthy had officially endorsed Stefanik as a replacement for Cheney, though Axios reported last week that the GOP leader had said he had “had it” with Cheney during an off-air conversation with Fox News’s Steve Doocy that was caught on a live microphone. McCarthy’s official support of Cheney’s removal is the latest sign of how the GOP is purging from its leadership anyone seen as opponents of Trump, solidifying the former president’s grip on the party. The Washington Post reported that the National Republican Congressional Committee, in recent polling presenta-

Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., speaks to a fellow lawmaker on the House floor, April 28. tions to its members, had left out key polling data about Trump’s weakness in some districts, indicating a willingness to minimize damage the former president could do to the party. Instead, fealty to Trump – and to his baseless assertions that the election was stolen – has become the defining loyalty test for Republicans. Few actions would symbolize that situation more than replacing Cheney with Stefanik in party leadership. Where Stefanik has often broken with the party line, at least in the past, Cheney has notched a fiercely conservative voting record. In 2017, Stefanik broke with the GOP to vote against Trump’s tax plan. M a r yla nd G ov. Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican who has criticized Trump, said Sunday that he was dismayed by the extent to which the party is now built around support for the former president. “It just bothers me that you have to swear fealty to the ‘dear leader’ or you get kicked out of the party,” Hogan said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “It just doesn’t make any sense.” Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., who has been one of the few Republican lawmakers to speak out against Trump, said McCarthy was responsible for Trump’s ability to remain all-powerful in the GOP, even after losing his reelection bid. On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” K inzinger argued that Trump had been “done” and relegated to “sulking away at Mar-aLago” after Jan. 6, when a

pro-Trump mob overran the U.S. Capitol in a violent insurrection. Immediately afterward, McCarthy told his House colleagues that Trump “bears responsibility” for the Capitol attack, and he floated the idea of censuring Trump, though he did not support his impeachment. Two weeks later, McCarthy met with Trump in Florida, where they discussed taking back the House in 2022. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., did the same in early February. Their decision to do so – along with the fundraising implications for others in the party – helped restore relevance to the former president, Kinzinger said. “They put the paddles on Donald Trump and resurrected him in the party, and everybody after that became scared to death of who Donald Trump was again,” Kinzinger said. “And that’s what empowered him. And everybody [who dared criticize Trump] went quiet.” Kinzinger, who months ago started a PAC to challenge his party’s embrace of Trump, has increasingly found himself in the minority within the GOP. On Sunday, he likened the Republican Party to the Titanic “in the middle of this slow sink,” with Trump “running around trying to find women’s clothing and get on the first lifeboat.” “As a party, we have to have an internal look and a full accounting as to what led to Jan. 6,” Kinzinger said. “There’s a few of us that are just saying, ‘Guys, this is not good, not just for the future of the party, but this is not good for the future of this country.’ “

Within the most ardently pro-Trump wing of the GOP, the animosity toward Cheney and other Republicans who have criticized Trump was on full display over the weekend, at an “America First” rally in central Florida hosted by Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. For more than an hour Friday, they mocked Democrats and rallied the crowd against so-called “Republicans in name only” who go against Trump and his agenda. “It’s the establishment against the rest of us,” Gaetz said then. Polls show that support for Trump – and his election falsehoods – is deep and broad in the Republican electorate. Across the country, local and state party organizations have sided with the former president and moved to censure or otherwise punish officials who have attacked Trump. Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, a vocal Trump critic, was booed by a Republican audience in his home state. Cheney’s probable loss of her leadership role drew a sympathizer from across the aisle: House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C. “I don’t agree with Liz on much politically, but, you know, that’s how we grow as a country. This whole thing that everybody ought to be marching in lockstep, that is what leads people to destruction,” Clyburn said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “I want to see a strong Republican Party. My parents were Republicans, and I would love to see this party honor them.”

On memory games The way to improve your memory is not through brain games and crosswords. You’ll get better at doing those brain games, and you’ll get good at crosswords, but it doesn’t translate. You don’t then get a better memory in your day-to-day life.

On the importance of sleep Sleep is super important for your memory. Events are being consolidated into a lasting memory while you sleep.

If you don’t get enough sleep, the hippocampus might not have enough time to do its job. You go and try to retrieve them (the memories) later and you’ll have a tough time and they won’t be fully retrievable. If you have a horrible night’s sleep, do you have a hard time paying attention the next day? What do you need to form a new memory? Attention. So you won’t have formed the memories of the stuff you learned yesterday and you’re not going to be able to form the memories of the stuff you learned today because you won’t be able to pay attention. While you sleep, the glial cells, the janitors of your brain, they

And they clear away the metabolic debris that accumulated during the business of being awake. And one of the things it clears away is amyloid beta. And if amyloid beta isn’t cleared away, it’ll stick to itself and form plaque. That is the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease. So if you want to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, one thing you can do is get enough sleep.

On how to get a good night’s sleep Our body temperature needs to go down by 2 degrees for us to fall asleep. Maybe your room is too warm. Are you worried through

who she’s given portraits to. She said that while she paints the subjects, she feels like she’s spending time with them and “honoring the lives they led.” Pamela Davis of St. Petersburg reached out to Bayalis after seeing the Facebook group. She lost her brother, Gary Joseph Eccher, in January. Bayalis offered to do a portrait of him and worked from his prayer card. “She captured every aspect of his features, even the dark circles under his eyes,” Davis said. She broke down when she first saw it and called Bayalis a “wonderful woman.” Davis looks at the tribute every day and has been sharing it on social media to show that “he’s a face, not a number.” For Bayalis, the project has helped her cope with the pandemic and allowed her to interact with more people than ever. “In terms of being rewarding, there’s no way to measure it,” she said. “It’s been a real nice reciprocal thing.”

the night? Write down everything you need to do tomorrow before you go to bed. Caffeine is a big deal. Caffeine is actually great for memory – it wakes your brain up. But you want to be careful about when you have this last latté of the day because the half-life of caffeine is five hours. That means that five hours later, half of the caffeine is still in your body.

On stress and memory Stress will inhibit your memory to remember. Chronic stress is super bad for memory. Exercise, even a brisk walk every day, can save our hippocam-

pus. Yoga, meditation, deep breathing. If you close your eyes and breathe in to the count of four, through your nose, it calms everything down. You can do this several times throughout the day.

On giving in and using Google If you can’t remember something, people think if they google it, it’s cheating. It’s not. It does not make your memory stronger by forcing yourself to remember it, and you do not make your memory weaker by googling it. A normal glitch in your memory doesn’t mean you’re getting Alzheimer’s.

Derby champion Medina Spirit fails drug test Tribune Content Agency BA LT I MOR E — Medina Spirit tested positive for the antiinf lammator y drug betamethasone after his victory in the Kentucky Derby, trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday morning, a result that could throw the Triple Crown series into chaos ahead of Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. “Medina Spirit has never been treated [with] betamethasone,” Baffert

said at an impromptu news conference outside his barn at Churchill Downs. “I got the biggest gut punch in racing for something I didn’t do. It’s disturbing; it’s an injustice to the horse.” Baffert said Medina Spirit has not yet been disqualified from the Derby and will still run in the Preakness. He’s scheduled to board a van to Baltimore on Monday afternoon. In a statement Sunday afternoon, the Maryland

Jockey Club, which operates Pimlico Race Course and the Preakness, said it will review “the relevant facts” before making a decision on Medina Spirit’s status for the second leg of the Triple Crown. “We are committed to achieving the highest level of horse care and safety standards, and we have a proven track record of pushing those standards forward,” the club and its parent company, 1/ST Racing, said in

the statement. Mike Hopkins, executive director of the Maryland Racing Commission, said he couldn’t comment on an open case in another state but said there’s no reason Medina Spirit can’t run in the Preakness. The Derby champion will have a blood sample taken for testing when he arrives in Maryland and would be tested after the Preakness if he finishes in the top three.

Betamethasone is also a regulated drug in Maryland, meaning it can be used therapeutically but triggers a violation if it shows up in a race-day sample. Churchill Downs confirmed the medication violation in a statement Sunday and suspended Baffert from racing horses at the home of the Derby. “It is our understanding that Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit’s

post-race blood sample indicated a violation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s equine medication protocols,” the statement read. “[Those involved with] Medina Spirit have the right to request a test of a split sample and we understand they intend to do so. To be clear, if the findings are upheld, Medina Spirit’s results in the Kentucky Derby will be invalidated and Mandaloun will be declared the winner.”

Add this to the legacy of his mantel of the greatest player of all time. He didn’t just set up his exit from New England. His absence showed them for what they were – an average team without him – while turning perennial loser Tampa Bay into a winner. Unhappy quarterbacks aren’t unusual. Terry Bradshaw criticized Rodgers for being

so “sensitive” in Green Bay. But Bradshaw didn’t return to Pittsburgh until three decades after his retirement because he was so put off by how Pittsburgh treated him. Dan Marino, tired of four straight non-playoff seasons and perhaps coach Don Shula’s ways, brokered the idea of a mutually beneficial trade from the Dolphins after the 1989 season. In a world without Twitter, it still caused a seismic outcry. “How dare he,” was the common theme. Players were treated as feudal property at the time. “With him or with anyone else, if a trade would help the club, I

would give it serious consideration,’’ Shula said then. “But I’d never trade him and hurt the team.” Marino’s request went nowhere. It turned out fine for him from the view of decades later. He’s now a quiet adviser inside his one and only team. But would he have won a ring if traded to a veteran Philadelphia team as rumored? Would that itch have been scratched? The looming question as first posed by Brady is if quarterbacks should have a voice inside the team’s decisions. Answer: It depends on the quarterback. Dolphins See Rodgers, Page B8

Humbled and hungry: Jordan Bell returns to W’s with renewed purpose Tribune Content Agency Jordan Bell flew from Minneapolis to Los Angeles last June, unsure if he’d get another chance to prove he belongs in the NBA. Less than a year earlier, Bell was playing meaningful minutes in the Finals with the Warriors. Now, after short-lived stops with the Timberwolves, Rockets and Grizzlies, he was an unemployed 25-year-old wondering where he’d gone wrong. Intent on showing NBA teams that he could still be a key part of a rotation, Bell mapped out a rigorous offseason workout regimen with his trainer, Chris Johnson: early morning skill work, afternoon games of 3-on-3, nightly shooting drills. As Bell prepares to return to the Warriors on a two-way contract, his closest friends believe he is a transformed player – not just because of his improved jump shot

and ballhandling, but because of his newfound maturity. Bouncing between six NBA teams, as well as two G League clubs, in 15 months humbled him and reignited his passion for the game. Bell now should have a few regular-season games and the postseason to make his case for a long-term role with the franchise that started it all. “He’s been through a lot,” said Sharrief Metoyer, Bell’s mentor and former high school coach. “I think that he now understands the value of being a professional and how to be a professional. “Sometimes, you don’t know how to be a professional when you’re young. It took some time, but he’s there.” During his first stint with Golden State (2017-19), Bell sometimes needed reminders from older players that optional workouts weren’t optional for him. Midway

through his second season, he got into a heated argument with head coach Steve Kerr during a win over the Lakers, which Kerr later dismissed as a “misinterpretation.” That spring, Bell was suspended for a game against the Grizzlies for charging a gift shop candle to assistant coach Mike Brown’s hotel bill without Brown’s permission. The Warriors had reason to think that wasn’t the first time Bell had done that to Brown. Such incidents could be chalked up to a young player learning how to be a professional. But even though the organization liked Bell and would have tried to bring him back in restricted free agency if not for the hard cap created by the D’Angelo Russell sign-and-trade with Brooklyn, news stories about Bell’s lapses in maturity portrayed See Bell, Page B8

Mark Canha watched his line drive carry into center field. It sank, but not enough. Brett Phillips made a crouching catch. Elvis Andrus, the potential tying run, was left stranded on third base. Canha slammed his helmet to the ground, the reflection of a frustrating A’s loss. Oakland’s season series against the defending AL champion Rays ended in fitting fashion. All but one game was decided by less than three runs. The A’s won four of the games and had chances late in a 4-3 loss at the Coliseum on Sunday. Canha’s lineout ended the seventh inning. First baseman Matt Olson was thrown out trying for third base on a pitch in the dirt to end the eighth. Mitch Moreland drew a two-out walk in the ninth; Andrus’ groundout ended the game. “Every time we play these guys it seems like it’s a battle,” A’s third

baseman Matt Chapman said. “I feel like they’re a similar kind of ballclub to us the way they play the game, the matchups and having guys that can play multiple positions. . . . Unfortunately we dropped that game today, but to be able to come out of it winning that series and taking four out of seven from them is something we can feel good about.” An early three-run A’s lead went for naught as they lost for just the fourth time in 18 games decided by three or fewer runs. The Rays totaled just four hits, all against starter Cole Irvin. The A’s had seven but mounted no scoring in five innings against Tampa Bay’s bullpen. Irvin cruised through his first four innings. Randy Arozarena lined Irvin’s first pitch of the game for a single. He retired his next 12 batters. He peppered four-seam fastballs in to right-handed hitters and changeups See A’s, Page B8

Johnny Cueto yields two homers in return, Padres spoil Giants’ sweep bid Tribune Content Agency Facing the loaded Padres lineup isn’t a treat most days, and Johnny Cueto on Sunday was just coming off the injured list. Cueto, who missed four starts with a lat strain, didn’t give up a ton of hard contact – except for two extremely well-struck balls, both drilled for two-run homers as San Diego beat the Giants 11-1 to avoid a threegame sweep. By the end of the proceedings, position player Darin Ruf was on the mound for San Francisco. The Giants remained in first place in the NL West, leading San Diego by a game and a half. In the second, Jake Cronenworth crushed a 1-1 slider from Cueto into McCovey Cove, a 445-foot shot. Fernando Tatis Jr. topped him later

in the inning, though without the splash, with a 454-foot drive, also on a 1-1 slider, pitches that Cueto described as mistakes he left up in the zone. Cueto allowed six more hits in three innings of work, but the rest were a variety of grounders, dribblers off bases and bloops. He walked one and struck out two. “The first thing we noticed that the stuff was there, so he came back with life on his pitches,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “No concerns there. He looked healthy. . . . Early on, there were some balls that got through and I think sometimes that can spiral a little bit, but there were some mistakes as well.” Cueto was sensational in his previous three outings, putting up See Giants, Page B8

he last time my Boy Scout troop went on a campout, we ate steak. I was startled. I was shocked. I didn’t know you could do that on a campout. Before that, most of our previous experiences around a campfire somehow involved Spam. We also had a memorable night in which we ate hamburgers with the ground beef stretched by adding bread, which our troop leader informed us was to add flavor. Our troop leader’s name, incidentally, was Norman Bates. Despite sharing a name with the notorious psycho in “Psycho,” he was a nice guy. He was so nice, he bought steak for our last campout. So perhaps my concept of eating around a campfire has been skewed. I always thought it meant Spam, with occasional sightings of hamburger and, on the rarest of occasions, steak. But apparently things have changed in 50 years. Now, some people drive to a campsite in campers equipped with all the comforts of a four-star hotel. Others’ tastes have expanded beyond the bounds of hot dogs, hamburgers and Spam to encompass dishes with more creativity in their cooking. I recently camped out in the wilds of St. Louis’ Tower Grove East neighborhood, where I encountered exotic wildlife (squirrels) and experienced the mysterious sounds of nature (the friendly barking of the dogs next door, Florence and Moby). I also cooked up a mess of chow around the old campfire, which I guess would technically be called a “grill.” But still, the recipes will work for campfires, too. I began, as one does, with breakfast. I made Campfire French Toast, which just may be the best French toast ever. And that’s not just because you get the faintest hint of smoke in your toast (OK, you can’t really taste it at all, because it’s wrapped in foil), but it’s also because the recipe is so stunning. And rich. Usually, you use whole milk to make French toast, but it can be a hassle to bring milk with you on a camping trip. It’s so much easier just to use a can of evaporated milk, which, I see now, has more calories – even nonfat evaporated milk. But you could use regular milk and still be impressed by this superlative dish, because it also calls for a fair amount of cinnamon and vanilla, plus a bit of maple syrup right in the dipping mixture. These are the magic ingredients that make any French toast better,

Shrimp Scampi, left, and Grilled Bacon and Avocado Toast, made on the grill. especially when paired with multigrain bread. I used the same loaf of bread to make Bacon, Egg and Avocado Toast. Or that’s what I would have made if I had remembered the egg. As it was, I made Bacon and Avocado Toast. And that was excellent, too, because of certain irrefutable fact: Bacon tastes better when it’s cooked over a fire. Though it is smoked to begin with, bacon only improves from a little extra fresh smoke from the glowing embers of a campfire. Toast, too, tastes better when cooked directly on the grate over a fire. Don’t cook the avocado. And if you do happen to remember the egg, simply cook it in the pan you used for the bacon. But frankly, the sandwich I made was so good it did not need an egg. The next dish I made is so obvious I’m embarrassed that I never thought of it before – quesadillas cooked over a fire. Like the French toast, the secret is to cover it in foil. Once protected from the fiercest heat of the fire, the quesadilla has a chance to warm up slowly until the cheese reaches the ideal state that scientists refer to as “gooey.” You can put anything in a quesadilla, but I stuck to the basics: precooked chicken, black beans, salsa and shredded cheese. When you’re cooking over a campfire, you don’t want to get too fancy. Unless you’re making shrimp scampi. If you happen to have the ingredients for shrimp scampi at your next campout, you may as well make it. It’s actually a simple, unassuming dish, but it is as delicious to eat at a campfire as it is unexpected. Once again, the key is to use foil. Just divide the ingredients – shrimp, garlic, white wine or chicken stock, butter, red pepper flakes, lemon juice and a bit of salt – into foil pouches, seal the pouches tight and put them on the grate. Foil, of course, is notori-

ously nontransparent. And because shrimp are so quick to cook, you’ll have to open the pouches a few times to see if they are done. But this slight effort does not matter, because the results are so worth it: shrimp scampi, on a camping trip. Imagine that. Naturally, any time spent around a campfire must include s’mores, but I decided to mix things up and make savory s’mores. That is, I stuffed mushroom caps with blue cheese and wrapped then with bacon. Perhaps you have had dates stuffed with Parmesan and wrapped with bacon. These savory s’mores are a variation on that life-changing idea, and you get the extra benefit of the smoke-enhanced bacon. Bacon, mushrooms and blue cheese. It’s the ultimate appetizer. It’s almost worth going camping for. CAMPFIRE QUESADILLAS Yield: 4 servings 4 flour tortillas, medium size (7 inches) 8 ounces cooked chicken (from about 12 ounces raw) 1 cup canned black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup salsa 1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese Place each tortilla on a large piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil and place chicken on half of each tortilla. Top with equal amounts of beans, salsa and cheese. Fold tortilla over and fold foil over tortilla, but do not seal the edges. 8 ounces bacon Clean mushrooms and remove the stems. Fill caps with blue cheese and wrap with bacon so the bacon covers the cheese. Secure with a wooden toothpick. Place wrapped mushrooms on a grate over a fire. Cook, occasionally turning carefully with long tongs, until bacon is done. Whisk together the evaporated milk, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon in a small baking dish or large resealable bag. If you don’t have a whisk, use a fork. Dip both sides of each piece of bread in the milk mixture until fully submerged. Arrange 2 pieces of bread next to each other, without overlapping, on 1 piece of buttered foil. Repeat with the remaining bread and 3 pieces of foil. Make the foil packs: Put the remaining 4 pieces of foil, butteredside down, directly on top of the bread so the foil touches the bread and the edges line up. Fold and crimp the edges tightly to make 4 rectangular packets. Place the packs on a grate over a medium-hot fire and cook about 5 minutes on each side. Cooking time will depend on the heat of the fire and the distance of the packs above the embers, so check for doneness by carefully opening one

Remote, remote work opportunities may outlive pandemic Emily Weddington at her home in Brentwood, Tennessee, a suburban city outside of Nashville, April 30.

E

Tribune Content Agency mily Weddington put some distance between herself and her West Midtown office in Atlanta during the pandemic. It’s now, give or take, 240 miles door to door. She and her husband have the same Atlantabased jobs they did before Covid-19. She’s in marketing for a company that produces corporate reports and he’s in finance for a commercial real estate firm. The two just no longer live in a house with a small yard in Brookhaven, Ga. Instead, they are in another time zone. They bought a bigger house on five acres outside Nashville. They each have an office in their Middle Tennessee home. They’re closer to his parents. And their two English Setters have room to run. When she looks out her backdoor, all Weddington sees is green space. “It’s a sense of relief: We are not crazy,” she said. “We can do this.” For many Americans, the pandemic redefined jobs and workplaces. Shuttered offices and relaxed work-from-home policies meant not having to make daily commutes. For some, the new flexibility cleared the way for really remote, remote work. They kept their jobs but moved to another part of the United States or stayed put after landing a new job that traditionally was based elsewhere. Many expect it to last long after the pandemic. While long-distance working existed before the coronavirus, companies have become increasingly open to more employees living far from where their jobs would traditionally be based. The shift poses new benefits – and challenges – for job seekers, employers and, potentially, communities such as metro Atlanta where office-based work is a big part of the economy. People looking for jobs could dramatically increase the number of positions they pursue without having to factor in cost-of-living changes, pulling kids out of school or being farther away from

family and friends. But they also could be competing with more people from virtually anywhere. Work-from-home job postings increased 199% nationally for the 12 months ending in March compared with the same period a year earlier at CareerBuilder, a job listings and recruitment company. At another jobs site, Indeed, the number of U.S. job postings mentioning “remote work” and related terms has doubled during the pandemic. The share of those postings grew even as more people returned to offices in recent months. “The rise of remote work has been one of the most dramatic effects of the pandemic – and might be one of its most longlasting,” Jed Kolko, the company’s chief economist, wrote in blog earlier this year. Offices likely aren’t going away and most jobs still don’t offer long-distance flexibility. A PricewaterhouseCoopers survey in January found nearly 30% of office employees want to work remotely five days a week after Covid-19 is no longer a concern. But the majority surveyed wanted to spend some time at the office each week. And most employers surveyed think they need to. About 7% of Indeed’s U.S. postings were remote this past February, versus about 3% in January of 2020. The spike varied by category. About 22% of software development job postings were listed as remote last year compared with nearly 9% in 2019, according to Indeed. For legal jobs, the share grew from nearly 5% to about 16%, banking and finance increased from less than 4% to over 15%, and therapy rose from just over 1% to more than 6%. The year before the pandemic, Nikki Forman landed a communications job with a nonprofit based in Washington D.C. and asked about remote working from Atlanta, a city she had grown to love. She was told it made more sense for her to be in the office, where she could connect with other staff. That all changed once

Steve Schaefer/The Atlanta Journal-Constitution/TNS

Nikki Forman poses for a photograph at Atlantic Station near her loft, April 30. the coronavirus swept the nation. The nonprofit sent people to work from home. Forman left her expensive apartment in Southwest D.C. and her regular walks to monuments along The Mall. She holed up at her parents’ home in Columbus, Ga., working from the family’s kitchen table, backyard and the bedroom where her sister had grown up. “What that community offered me was the family feeling, the comfort of being home,” she said. “I started saying ‘ya’ll’ again,” she added. Late last year, Forman started a new job as an Amazon public relations manager. She was allowed flexibility in where she wanted to live, as long as it was on the East Coast. She advocated for Atlanta and now lives in the Atlantic Station area. The potential for more people to choose remote work raises broader questions for Atlanta’s economy. Many of the jobs with remote working options traditionally took place in office buildings and corporate parks, something metro Atlanta has in abundance. In addition to regional outposts of some of the nation’s biggest companies and smaller employers, Georgia holds the headquarters of nearly 20 Fortune 500 businesses, all credited with helping to feed the local economy, tax base and image. If some employers can pull more workers from all over the nation, will they be more or less likely to base

their operations in metro Atlanta? And will Georgia be a magnet for more or fewer workers than before? M idtown Atlanta snagged numerous corporate research and development operations thanks largely to proximity to Georgia Tech, with its pool of tech students, researchers and alumni. More recently, Atlanta has drawn major jobs announcements from Airbnb and Microsoft, companies hoping to recruit from the city’s pool of Black tech workers. Georgia Tech Professor Patricia Mokhtarian, who studies the impact of telecom technology on travel behavior, suspects distant working will remain a relatively small part of the jobs picture. While she doesn’t know of any study into its potential ramifications for specific metro areas, she predicts Atlanta will remain attractive because of such advantages as relatively affordable housing and a decent climate, plus the benefits of people and businesses clustering together. Cathr ine A ndersen didn’t want to move to metro Atlanta when the business payments company Fleetcor Technologies, based in the city’s Buckhead district, began talks last fall to buy the small tech company she co-founded and operated with remote employees around the world. She and her husband were living in San Francisco, but had been planning to move to

Austin in Texas, enticed by lower living expenses, more options for outdoor activities, the promise of somewhat fewer tech people and closer proximity to family. Fleetcor wanted her to keep running things after the acquisition, which in the past would have required a move to Atlanta, where she didn’t know anyone. But the company agreed for her to live where she wanted. Now, she’s a Fleetcor product development executive and lives near Austin’s famous Barton Springs Pool, which she often walks to for a swim. None of the 55 people from her original company made the move to Atlanta, Andersen said. “This is the new world. This is how work is now.” In the past, Fleetcor would never have considered having new hires remain far from company offices, said Crystal Williams, the chief human resources officer. But the increased flexibility will help the company’s IT department recruit workers from beyond tight job markets such as Atlanta and Nashville, she said. “We are actively looking in markets we would never have searched before for IT talent.” There are complications to work through, she said. How will they avoid isolation among distant employees, instill corporate culture and encourage strong collaboration? “We do not have all the

answers,” Williams said. Plenty of employers have been evaluating which of their positions need workers on site fulltime, which could best fit under a hybrid model and which allow for almost never setting foot in the office. Williams doesn’t think many of the company’s existing employees will move far away soon, in part because of the complexity it would add to their own lives. But some are already asking. Other companies with locally based operations are making similar moves. Oversight, which helps companies analyze spending transactions and has about 135 local employees, has changed its hiring strategy to recruit more outside metro Atlanta for almost every role, Chief People Officer Jill Sutton wrote. “Oversight’s Return to Office Policy is really, ‘do your best work, where you work best’.” At Purchasing Power, Chief People Officer Racquel Roberts is glad to be able to hire from beyond people already in Atlanta or willing to migrate here for a job with the provider of purchasing programs through payroll deductions. That’s a big deal for smaller companies with less recognizable brands, she said. “More employees are going to be looking for companies where they can work 100% remote.” Weddington, who moved with her husband from Brookhaven to Nashville’s suburbs, said a shift to Tennessee had been the long-term plan. She just thought it would have come much later and required her to quit her current job and find a new one. But her employer’s thinking seemed to have shifted during the pandemic. So did hers. On a long stay with family in East Tennessee following the death of her mother and the beginning of the pandemic shutdowns, she and her husband enjoyed peaceful walks in an orchard and fields. They were sold. “We are planning on being here for the long haul,” she said.

Miss the Spice Girls? A new comedy mocks ‘misogynistic’ culture behind their rise Los Angeles Times The catchy, syrupy-sweet tunes from the female pop stars of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s were once described by some as a major step toward female empowerment: Britney Spears showing the world how a young woman could own her sexuality, or the Spice Girls championing the power of female friendship. But in retrospect, these acts’ shiny surfaces can also read as a slick repackaging of sexist tropes. And the ongoing reconsideration of American culture from that era, which has included everyone from Spears to Monica Lewinsky, is allowing those who lived through the years of overplucked eyebrows, low-rise jeans and Destiny’s Child to look at it again, even as Gen Z delights in experiencing those bygone trends for the first time. Bring in “Girls5eva,” the new Peacock comedy from executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The series follows the titular girl group, which years ago shot to stardom and then quickly faded into obscurity, when its members seize the spotlight once more after being sampled on a trap artist’s new single. The show jumps back and forth in time, juxtaposing the present with the group’s music videos, grainy camcorder footage and “Total Request Live” appearances of yore: We see Y2K through 2021 eyes, as the women – now in their 40s – grapple with the questionable artistic choices they made, often with less autonomy than they first thought. “Have you ever wanted the perfect girl to fit in your world?” croons Gloria, played by former “Saturday Night Live” head writer Paula Pell, in the song “Dream Girlfriend.” “Well, don’t make a wish, because we’re already real.” This ridiculous anthem of male fantasy, which launches

Daily Cryptoquotes

into more pointed satire about whale-tail thongs and stylish birth control, might sound like a stretch, but the show makes a point that it’s only a stone’s throw from real-life examples like “I’m a Slave 4 U” and “Cater 2 U.” “Everything is an amalgamation of [turn-of-the-millennium pop music]. It’s Spice Girls, it’s Destiny’s Child, En Vogue, Britney Spears. It’s kind of like a pastiche of a kind of genre that I think is even wider than what Girls5eva were doing,” Sara Bareilles, who plays the group’s “chill” member, said via video conference. In borrowing so much from that period, the team behind “Girls5eva” (so named because “4 eva’s 2 short”) has tried to ensure, through meticulous research, that any exaggerations depicted in the show are rooted in reality. “The writers and I kind of bought every book that was written. We have one from, like, Beyoncé Knowles’ father; everyone who wrote a book in the late ‘90s about that era,” said showrunner Meredith Scardino. Other reference materials include the TV series “Making the Band” and the Lou Pearlman documentary “The Boy Band Con.” It also helped that the show is about an era the writers and actors remember vividly, Scardino added. “When I was thinking about developing the show, the girl group idea kind of popped in my head as a cool way to be able to talk about being a woman in her 40s now, and also look back at when I came of age,” she said. The show’s riffs on the music industry certainly passed the test for the musicians on set. The third episode, in which Stephen Colbert plays an inscrutable but revered pop songwriter named Alf Musik, finds the group’s members in an uncomfortable spot when they’re compelled to turn down an awful song Musik

has written for them. “I’ve been in those rooms with the producer who has a bad idea, and it’s sort of like the push-andpull of wanting to be amenable, but also checking in with, ‘Is this a good idea? Should we say these things on the microphone? Probably not,’” recalled Bareilles. “A lot of [these groups] are just kind of churned out by a factory and just handed a song and didn’t really have a voice in the equation,” said Scardino. Girls5eva’s “Dream Girlfriend,” crafted in much the same fashion, is about “being the ideal woman, but for a certain kind of man – like it was clearly not written by them.” Another nod from the show to the girl group industry is that many weren’t formed from friendship but from money and circumstance. The show’s biting lyrics work, Richmond said, to shed light “on the music industry, how it operated, and how misogynistic it was to have a girl group that was created by men and written by men.” (“We’ve been best friends ever since we auditioned for a man in a motel in New Jersey,” says Wickie Roy, the superstar of the group, played by “Hamilton’s” Renée Elise Goldsberry.) But while “Girls5eva” sharpens its comic knives for the ways in which pop culture exploits young women and then quickly casts them off – “For ladies, 35 is checkout time,” says the group’s manager, played by Jonathan Hadary – Scardino said the series is rooted in affection for the girl groups of that era. “We have nothing but love for every pop star that’s out there and went through this.” And in our own nostalgiaobsessed culture, it’s not even a stretch for Girls5eva to get back together in hopes of making it big – on its own terms, a second time around. After all, the Spice Girls are teasing a reunion tour later this year.

WHEN YOU CANNOT WIN THE TRICK Sitting third hand, you hold Q-J-2 and it’s your turn. Yesterday, we learned that if your card might win the trick, you play the jack, the bottom of equal cards. However, what happens if you cannot win the trick, because partner or dummy has already played the ace or king? What would you do then?

Sudoku

by Phillip Alder If you think it is beneficial to tell partner about your honor sequence, drop the queen, the top of the touchers. This guarantees that you have either the queen and the jack (perhaps with one or more lower cards), or an unlikely singleton. Now partner, if he led ace from ace-king, knows that he may underlead at trick two, and you will win the trick either with your jack or by ruffing. (Partner can probably read the position correctly, knowing from the bidding that you cannot have a singleton queen.) This agreement aided the defense in today’s deal. When West overcalled, he was primarily hoping to make it harder for the opposition to reach a spade contract. However, despite the adverse vulnerability, it was possible that East-West could win the auction. South, after receiving a single raise from his partner, took an understandable shot at game. West led the club ace, and East signaled with the queen, promising the jack (or a most unlikely singleton). West continued with a low club, not the king. After winning with the jack, it was the work of a moment for East to shift to the diamond queen. In another moment, the defenders had taken the first four tricks. Note that without this defense, declarer has 10 major-suit winners. COPYRIGHT: 2021, UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE

When forces surrounding his stardom threaten to crush their dreams, she must decide what she is willing to risk for love. The Compton Girls Club is the after-school program you wish you’d had as a teen Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — Kukim Vazquez, a 17-yearold high school senior from Compton, started baking when she was in fifth grade and has spent the last few years watching YouTube tutorials and making more cookies and cupcakes than her friends and family are able to consume. After a cousin encouraged her to get on Instagram to promote her baking business, she came across a jewelry-making workshop hosted by the Compton Girls Club. Like a lot of high school students, Vazquez had been struggling during the pandemic: There was no more French club, no gymnastics, no tutoring kids after school. Signing up for the sessions seemed better than scrolling on her phone all day. First, she learning how to make earrings over Zoom, then she signed up for a business incubator. Over three weekends, she and 10 other teens learned the basics of starting a small business. During a final, “Shark Tank”style session, participants pitched their businesses. Vazquez was excited but worried about presenting to a panel. “I get really nervous and I stutter a lot,” she recalled. Her idea – Home Sweet Compton, a home bakery – won over the judges. “I was just so happy,” she said. “I wasn’t so focused on winning, but just learning so much throughout the process was really helpful.” The business incubator is just one of the many ways founder Chrystani Heinrich has sought to make the Compton Girls Club a warm and affirming community where girls, femmes and nonbinary teens can explore new

hobbies, ask questions and learn how to boss up. Heinrich, who uses they/them pronouns, founded the club in 2017 as an after-school program at Compton High School, where they worked as a librarian for more than a decade. Even as the club has grown it has kept to its core mission: boosting and supporting the teens. “I just want to make sure they have a safe space to feel included,” Heinrich, 35, said recently. “I make sure to use that language and make sure they see an adult, a Black woman, using that language, because it’s important to see it being used.” Club meetings are designed to expose the teens to new creative, selfcare or business activities. The club has hosted an alcohol-free paint ‘n sip, a tea tasting and self defense classes. Club members have learned how to decorate pastries, sew, crotchet and start a zine. They’ve taken field trips to LACMA and Little Tokyo. They’ve also workshopped résumés and strategized on how to get into career fields like social media. Classes are often taught by Heinrich’s friends, volunteers in the community and industry insiders from companies that have come on, recently, as corporate sponsors.

What the schools aren’t teaching In a lot of ways, the Compton Girls Club is the club Heinrich wanted when they were a teenager growing up in Compton – something that made art and culture easily accessible, but also have the tools to turn new hobbies into business ventures. Heinrich comes from a long line of entrepreneurial women. When times

America Gonzalez, who has attended multiple workshops with the Compton Girls Club, is photographed at home in Sun Valley, April 14. were tough, their mother sold cheesecakes and their grandmother sold flowers to make ends meet. Heinrich’s mother and grandmother both formed Girl Scout groups when their children weren’t able to join the troops available to them. Heinrich started off selling cookies and graduated to selling vintage clothing while working as a librarian at Compton High School. One of Heinrich’s goals for the club was to spark that same energy in their students. While Heinrich understands the criticisms against hustle culture, they also know that sometimes people from the neighborhood need that flexibility. “These schools aren’t teaching these girls anything,” Heinrich said. “You’re learning math and you’re learning how to read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ but how am I going to take care of myself?” The club’s mission has drawn in a series of volunteers, sponsors and donors who help fund the organization. At one of the earliest meetings of the club, Heinrich had the stu-

dents make vision boards. About a dozen teens met up to cut photos out of old issues of Vanity Fair and Essence. They gravitated toward images of people traveling, trying new things, smiling and generally looking happy. The magazines, and additional art supplies, had been donated by a woman who found the school club . . . somehow, possibly through social media. Years later, Heinrich isn’t exactly sure. “When that happened I was like ‘OK, this is beyond me. I don’t even understand how this woman found me, but she did, so I must be on my path and my purpose, because somebody sent her to me and I appreciate it,’ ” Heinrich said. In 2019 Heinrich created GIRL, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit and left their job as a librarian. Heinrich signed a lease on a space in downtown Compton just before the March 2020 lockdown. And though the club’s workshops – on sexual education, K-pop and Korean culture, and meditation, among other things – were moved to

Zoom, they have remained popular with teens in and around Compton. Both in person and online, the vibe has remained the same: have fun, learn new things and practice self-care. And if that new hobby could turn into a side hustle, great. After the club learned how to make brown sugar body scrubs, some of the members suggested they might sell the scrubs. Heinrich encouraged them. “Use these skills as your hustle, your self-care activity or just a hobby,” Heinrich said. “Always have a skill in your back pocket to take care of yourself, because you never know when you might need to pay your way through college or just survive or help your family.” Heinrich has also focused on helping teens manage sexual and reproductive health. At Compton High School they ran donation drives for pregnant teenagers. And during the pandemic the club has held several sex ed workshops. America Gonzalez, a 17-year-old junior from Sun Valley, found out about the club last year through social media and participated in a sex ed series held last August. Topics included how to obtain birth control and access sexual healthcare, how to prevent and identify STIs, what consent looks like and an introduction to gender identity and sexuality. Gonzalez said the lessons were more in-depth than at school and she didn’t have the same fear of judgment from her peers. “They welcomed you with a really kind heart, and they were like, ‘Ask questions, ask what you need,’” she said. “I really liked that space and the environment.” From there, Gonzalez attended sessions on

graphic design, spaghetti preparation and making soap. Now she makes lavender scented bars when she’s stressed.

Entrepreneurship is not just for adults Earlier this year Gonzalez and others participated in a business incubator run in partnership with TBWA\ Chiat\Day Los Angeles, an advertising agency, and its client QuickBooks. (Gonzalez pitched an app called Eco Friendly Swap to help people find environmentally conscious shops in the San Fernando Valley.) “Have a great idea, but can’t even imagine how to get started being your own boss?” read a Dec. 16 post on the club’s Instagram page advertising the incubator. “Owning your own business isn’t just for adults!” The incubator partnership grew out of the ad agency’s effort to back Black-owned organizations in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the racial reckoning that followed. “We went into it as, ‘We’re here as a net for you, a supportive partner,’ ” said Oyinda Elias, the multicultural practice lead at TBWA\ Chiat\Day LA and one of several Black employees who led the firm’s effort to come up with ways it could commit to promoting racial justice. In six sessions held over three weekends, incubator participants learned how to vet business ideas, got help with branding, and were trained in marketing, budgeting and how to use different small-business tools while hearing from guest speakers like Mikaila Ulmer, the young entrepreneur behind Me & the Bees lemonade.

Rodgers: QBs finally flexing their value From Page B1 GM Chris Grier nearly chuckled at a question about whether Tua Tagovaila stating the offense needed speed played into the team’s decision to get faster at receiver this offseason. Tua played one marginal year. There’s no weight to his voice just yet. Rodgers and Wilson are different. They’ve won Super Bowls, are perennial Pro Bowl players – Rodgers is a three-time league MVP. They’ve not only won big but made their franchises billions (yes, with a “b.”) Why wouldn’t Seattle consult Wilson on offensive-line issues? Is it buying the future of 70-year-old Pete Carroll over the 32-year-old

Wilson? Green Bay looks even dumber. No matter Rodgers always sounds like the smartest guy on a “Jeopardy” show. Why wouldn’t you consult with him before hiring a young, unproven coach in Matt LaFleur? Why wouldn’t you simply call him out of respect before drafting a first-round quarterback in Jordan Love? Watson, meanwhile, was saddled with the dumbest NFL team of late. It traded a top receiver in DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona for nothing, traded the future to the Dolphins for tackle Laremy Tunsil and has an owner in Cal McNair who only oversees the mess. Why stake your future

ers each year. Forget the rest. Those eight were the ones with a good personnel director, a good coach – and a great quarterback. You need each component. Brady won six Super Bowls in New England. Rodgers has one ring in Green Bay. Is Brady that much better than Rodgers? Or was the organization coach Bill Belichick set up in New England that much better than in Green Bay? Still, the slow-moving NFL teams are discovering what pro basketball teams did too late. They better work with their top stars. Sometimes even that won’t matter. For the rest of the league the tantalizing issue is this: Who wouldn’t want Aaron Rodgers for four good years?

to that? Because you’re paid a lot? The money will be there. The top 15-paid players in the league last year were quarterbacks (and nine starters were on rookie contracts, meaning they can’t be paid top money). They make that money because the best make their team billions (yes, with a “b.”) These quarterbacks finally are flexing their value like NBA stars. Why trust their careers to people they don’t trust? The clock is ticking on Rodgers, at 37, and Wilson, at 32. This isn’t to say quarterbacks are the end-all of a team’s success. Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh always said eight organizations were sustained contend-

A’s: Still won season series from Rays From Page B1 away. Yandy Díaz lined out and grounded out sharply; no other Rays hitter put a ball in play above 100 mph through the fourth. Mike Brosseau led off the fifth skying a pop-up above home plate. Catcher Sean Murphy stood under it, shielding his eyes against the sun with his glove. The ball bounced off Murphy’s glove, his first error of the season, as Brosseau sprinted to first base. “I talked to Murph about it and he had it all the way, which is why he didn’t say anything,”

Chapman said. “But once the ball started coming back down I think it went into the sun and he lost it at the last second.” Joey Wendle ripped a double under the glove of Olson into right field. With one out, Irvin threw a changeup to Willy Adames, who lined it over the right-field wall. “I don’t know if he in his career has sat on a changeup and took it the other way,” Irvin said. “I thought that was a pretty good pitch to throw him and he beat me, and all I can do is tip my hat.” Irvin had surrendered

just three home runs in his first six outings this season. A second blast hurt Sunday. Brosseau homered on a two-strike slider with two outs in the sixth. Murphy whipped his head around as the ball arced toward the left-field seats to break a 3-3 tie. The A’s had built their lead in the fourth. Rays starter Shane McClanahan had retired 10 in a row before Chapman lined a two-out single. Seth Brown drew a walk and Stephen Piscotty flared a single to shallow center to score Chapman. Moreland,

who had struck out on a 100 mph fastball from McClanahan in his first at-bat, shot a two-strike slider through the left side of the infield for a two-run single. The A’s scored no more than three runs in six of their games against the Rays, yet still claimed the season series. “Every one went down to the last at-bat, the last strike,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We felt pretty good at 3-0 but their team comes back, they’re scrappy like we are, and you know it’s probably going to come down to the end.”

Bell: Struggled with T’Wolves last year From Page B1 him as a locker-room issue. It didn’t help that, despite plenty of opportunity, Bell struggled to crack the Timberwolves’ rotation last season. After averaging just 8.7 minutes in 27 games with Minnesota, he was included in a four-team, 12-player trade last February that landed him in Houston. The Rockets, who only took Bell as salary filler so they could get Robert Covington, dealt Bell to

Memphis the next day. Not in the Grizzlies’ long-term plans either, he was waived less than a month later. “When it happened, I was down, I was sad, I wanted to cry,” Bell told The Athletic in August. “I wanted to be mad, I wanted to cuss somebody out, I wanted to fight somebody. But I still had a chance to play basketball in the NBA. There’s not a lot of people who get to say that.” Bell’s previous three

offseasons had been limited by a Final Four run at Oregon and two straight Finals runs with the Warriors, which might have set back his development. The offseason is the best time of year for young players to round out their skills. Bell spent six months last year working with Johnson in Los Angeles to become more than just a high-energy big man who rebounds and blocks shots. Six days a week, Bell participated in exer-

Pigeonholed with the Warriors, Timberwolves and Grizzlies as a rim-runner and interior defender, Bell was finally comfortable putting the ball on the floor, finding open teammates and knocking down midrange jumpers.

Giants: Lose big From Page B1 a 1.80 ERA before incurring the lat strain during a start against the Reds on April 14. Sunday, that was on his mind initially. “I was a little bit worried about the injury,” he said, “but I’m happy that everything was fine.” The Padres would have inflicted more damage were it not for center fielder Steven Duggar, who with the bases loaded and two outs in the third, plunged for a liner by pitcher Chris Paddack. “It was a great play,” Kapler said. “He’s been playing a really aggressive center field, it’s one of the things that we’ve asked him to do with everything that that he brings to the game.” The Giants got strong work from Matt Wisler, who has been among the most erratic relievers. Wisler worked two perfect innings, striking out two. Lefty Jarlin Garcia also showed

good stuff in his first appearance after coming off the IL Friday, striking out three in two innings, and when he got in trouble in the seventh, Brandon Crawford helped to bail him out with a great play deep in the hole. K apler c a l le d the outings promising, adding, “That was another peripheral benefit from today’s rough game.” In the eighth, the Padres tacked on four runs against José Álvarez, in part because of Álvarez’s own throwing error on a potential inning-ending double-play ball. Maurico Dubón cost Austin Slater an RBI in the seventh when Dubón didn’t get a good break off second and couldn’t score on Slater’s single to center – the team’s only hit with a man in scoring position Sunday. Crawford’s sacrifice fly in the eighth drove in the lone run.
