RIO VISTA — A group of 20-plus volunteers worked Saturday through a strong breeze and a near ear-piercing squeaky wheelbarrow at the Rio Vista Habitat for Humanity veterans home. The second of three workdays had representatives from Sustainable Solano, Travis Air Force Base and Berkeley Food & Housing, to name a few. Berkeley Food & Housing operates the home, located right next to the American Legion post. Reggie Sironen was a homeless veteran who began working with Berkeley Food & Housing in 2015. He lived for a time at the former Mission Solano in Fairfield and attended Solano Community College and Brandman University thanks to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Grant and Per Diem program. Today, he’s a program manager
for the Berkeley agency and was among the volunteers digging up the earth and planting. John Davenport, of Cali Ground Troops based in Brentwood, has spent almost every day at the home for the past month. He, too, was a homeless veteran. Prior to work getting underway, Davenport shared the challenges of the task, noting at the first workday, big bricks were being pulled out of the ground. Nicole Newell, program manager for Sustainable Solano, spoke of the Patwin Indians, who were among the area’s earliest inhabitants. “They didn’t stay here,” she said in jest. “They were smart. It’s too windy.” Davenport took that into consideration in designing the garden. He’s a recent graduate of the Permaculture Design Certificate program offered by Sustainable Solano and Vital Cycles in Benicia.
Davenport teamed up with two fellow students in the certificate program to create the design as their final capstone project. The soil was given a probiotic boost to help the plants help each other. The goal is permaculture, where the target is to eventually cut off the irrigation. The garden will conserve water on-site. It also aims to create natural, healing space where the residents can relax and reflect, and to serve as an opportunity for growing food on the site. Funding is from the Solano Sustainable Backyards program, which is funded by the Solano County Water Agency. Newell said Sustainable Solano usually works on backyard projects covering about 1,300 square feet. The Rio Vista project has more than 5,000 square feet, she said. India saw its deadliest day of the pandemic yet with 3,689 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, as the caseload surged to 19.5 million with 392,488 fresh infections, government data showed Sunday. This is the fourth straight day India has recorded more than 3,000 deaths as the second wave of the pandemic carries on unabated and keeps setting grim new records. Altogether, 215,542 people have died from Covid-19. India became the first country to cross 400,000 daily cases on Saturday. It recorded
6.6 million infections and 45,000 deaths in April, compared to the little over 1.2 million cases and 5,417 deaths in March, broadcaster NDTV reported. Health care systems are overwhelmed, and a shortage of medical oxygen has emerged as the most serious challenge. Thirty-four patients died for alleged want of oxygen in hospitals in the national capital, New Delhi, and the states of Andhra Pradesh and Haryana on Saturday, the Times of India reported. Thirty-one more with Covid-19-like symptoms and “breathing difficulties” died in a hospital in

BMI chart, you may notice that at my weight I am still considered overweight by that standard. I don’t trip on that. For one thing, as someone who shrunk from Jabba the Hutt size to Luke Skywalker size, I have some loose skin and it adds some weight. Some women in BLE came up with a calculation that takes that into account as the BMI and other formulas do not and I am very comfortable with my body. Plus, I started out wearing a size 4XL shirt and can wear a large now (actually some mediums as well) and my pants were a 56 waist and now are 34. What, at 6 feet 4 inches, do I really need to wear a small shirt and have a size 28 waist? I didn’t do this to become a male model. You know, I haven’t really given this new body of mine a whirl yet. I mean, there is this pandemic thing happening you may heard about. I’m now vaccinated, though, and I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do. I’ve been walking for more
than a year now and I can keep a very risk pace for over an hour, no problem. That was definitely not the case before. I even went out last week and shot some hoops. Things that may not seem like a big deal to people who haven’t lost more than 150 pounds include being able to easily cross my legs, being able to bend over and tie my shoes, not only not having to shop at the Big and Tall and Overpriced store for clothes, but not being able to because they don’t carry my size anymore! One super cool thing is seeing people become inspired to do BLE because they have witnessed my success. My brother Scott is my BLE buddy and he reached goal range and has been on maintenance for almost a year. Several friends have started as well, including Anna, Sandra, Renee, Chris, Jennifer, a different Sandra, Jason, Robert, Toni, Candace, Paula, Donna and others. The most significant, though,
is my wife of 26 years, Beth, who started BLE in July of 2020 and has released more than 75 pounds thus far and recently landed in “Onederland” (weighing lower than 200 pounds) for the first time in decades. So I have written about my journey a few times before and look, I get it, dramatic weight loss is what people notice. But what is truly the much bigger deal is the peace of mind that I now possess. I think clearer than at any time in my life. I feel confident, relaxed and comfortable in situations that used to stress me out. I have energy that I never had before. Having food in its proper place in my life has worked miracles. I no longer eat for amusement. Food is my fuel and my medicine. I came to Bright Line Eating for the vanity, but I am staying for the sanity. Learn more at www.brightlineeating.com. Fair offers hints of what a ‘culturally equitable’ city would look like Brookings Institution. The findings also show that roughly 1.4 million of those jobs were in the fine and performing arts. Now, Gill sees the fair as an opportunity to rebuild. City leaders, including Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore City Schools CEO Sonja Santelises and Jocquelyn Downs, the director of The Arts Council at Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts, discussed ways Baltimore can better support visionaries. “Baltimore has a deep history of leaving people out,” said Kenneth Morrison, 35, who is the curator for the fair. “In this case, Black creatives are left out of resources and we are trying to address that and making it a more culturally equitable city.” workEducational shops such as “Navigating Technology” and “Grant Writing for Impact” were offered as well as information on financial advice, tax preparation and professional photography. A Baltimore native who lives in Cedonia, Gill is a spoken word artist whose talents have been heard on stages across the United States and overseas as far away as Zanzibar. She taught creative writing in elementary and middle school classrooms and led poetry programs in prisons and group homes throughout Maryland. In 2015, Gill was recognized as an Open Society fellow. In 2016, she was
Tribune Content Agency BALTIMORE – The Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts & Entertainment District, a Baltimore organization that works to promote local artists, hosted its first annual Black Artist Fair. The free event was held virtually and feature 70 speakers, including author, entertainer and comedian Amanda Seals, who will deliver the keynote. The purpose is to help blossoming artists whose growth may have been stunted due to the coronavirus pandemic. More than 2,500 people were expected to log on for the festivities streaming live on Facebook and YouTube. Brion Gill, 30, who goes by “Lady Brion,” is the executive director of the Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts & Entertainment District. She hopes artists can learn how to replenish some of their finances that may have been lost due to the pandemic. “We recognize that especially for entrepreneurs during the Covid-19 crisis, a lot of people did not have stable supplies or they had to come up with new ways to have a revenue stream,” Gill said. “People lost revenue when events and exhibitions got canceled.” An estimated 2.7 million jobs were lost in the creative industry, according to a recent study by the
crowned champion of the National Poetry Slam Competition. And in 2017, she was awarded the 2017 Salzburg Fellowship for Social Innovators. Two years later, Gill founded the Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts & Entertainment District. There are seven people on her team. “We recognize that in a predominantly Black city, there has not been an equitable lend in the artist sector,” Gill said. “We knew we needed to be doing this work.” In the later months of 2020, Gill and Morrison, also a spoken word artist, spent time trying to come up with ways to provide resources for artists who either lost their jobs or had to step away from their field to support themselves during the pandemic. They decided on a virtual event that would help educate and connect creatives while also teaching them to survive without having to abandon their craft. There were some hurdles while putting the event together in just six months. “It was difficult because we had to reach circles of artists we had never heard of before,” Morrison said. He added that roughly 20 cultural organizations, including cable company Comcast and Dewmore Baltimore, which encourages art in marginalized communities, are working
to invest in their effort. “We knew we would not be successful without the support of the city,” Morrison said. Although this was the first-ever Black Artist Fair, Gill and Morrison hope to host the event annually. “This is the time for people to rebrand, stretch, grow and develop,” Gill said. “This is a time to build something new and fan that flame.

Heartache of separation finally ending for vaccinated grandparents The Washington Post Days before the plane touched down in Arlington, Va., on a clear April evening, 5-year-old Akiko Kotcher was already preparing for her grandmother’s arrival. She excitedly announced the upcoming visit to her virtual kindergarten class and made colorful welcome signs to decorate the house. She built a fortress of pillows and blankets in the guest bedroom, so she could be as close as possible to her grandmother, even as they slept. It had been well over a year since they were last together in January 2020, when Akiko’s grandparents, Naomi and Ronald Jue, hosted their two adult daughters, their partners and their children for a post-holiday visit in Fullerton, Calif. So much had happened since then, during the many months of pandemic isolation: Akiko turned 5, started kindergarten online and began learning how to read. Her parents – Karin Jue, 40, senior director of streaming media at PBS Kids, and John Kotcher, 37, a research assistant professor at the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University – juggled fulltime work with full-time child care. Meanwhile, Naomi, 77, devoted herself to caring for her 82-yearold husband, whose health began to decline after he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. From their homes on opposite coasts, they all stayed as close as they could through phone calls and FaceTime, through letters and drawings that Karin and Akiko sent in the mail each week. When Ronald died at home in March, his griev-

As soon as Karin was fully vaccinated in April, she flew to California to see her mother, and brought her back to Virginia for a visit. Their journey is mirrored by families across the country: Among the many who have endured long separations, the first highly anticipated reunions are finally taking place. For grandparents in particular, the need to guard against covid-19 has been weighed against the yearning to be close to children and grandchildren, and an acute awareness of the time being lost. But now, with the arrival of vaccines, dates are circled on calendars, flights are booked, plans are made. In New Jersey, Vernon Gibbs II, 42, told his 5-year-old twins and 7-year-old son that they
could spend the night with their grandmother – and, no, they wouldn’t have to wear masks in her home. In Maryland, Mary Karapetian Alvord, 69, packed for a flight to California, her bag stuffed with gifts and stickers for her toddler granddaughter, whom Mary had last seen when the girl was 8 months old. And in Northern Virginia, Naomi awoke in her daughter’s family home on a bright spring morning and embraced her grandchild for the first time in 15 months. Later, Naomi would recall how healing it felt just to hold Akiko, the joyful moment unburdened by all that had happened – in the world, in their family – during their months apart. There was only an excited child, eager to welcome the person

she’d been waiting for. “Hi, Grammy!” Akiko said. “Come see my new room!” The Gibbs family was never separated by more than a short drive – Vernon’s parents lived nearby in New Jersey, and his wife’s parents were in Brooklyn. But the routine contact between his kids and their grandparents still came to a halt when everything shut down in March 2020. Weekly drop-bys and frequent sleepovers were replaced with phone calls and FaceTime, and then – as the weather began to warm – with socially distanced, outdoor visits that felt better than nothing but still strange.
First through a phone screen, then through a mask, his children would ask his mother: “Grandma,
when are we going to come to your house?” “We kept telling them, ‘it’s not a good time yet,’ “ he says. Vernon, a stay-at-home dad and children’s book author, and his wife, child psychiatrist Tresha Gibbs, 40, were closely following the numbers of reported covid-19 cases in their community, he says, “and the numbers were bad. Over the winter, we went back to staying in touch through phone calls.” Vernon could tell his children were painfully aware of the distance. When the family shared prayers before dinner each night, he recalls, “my daughter started saying, ‘and please help the coronavirus go away, because it’s keeping us from Grandma and Grandpa.’ ” Mary Karapetian Alvord, a Maryland-based psychologist, last saw her granddaughter when she babysat the 8-month-old on New Year’s Eve 2019, and she remembers a See Heartache, Page A8

Your lucky numbers are: 1, 5, 31, 22 and 17.
trust people who say, “Trust me.” SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Responsibility doesn’t burden you in the least today. In fact, you have become so strong through your various roles that you hardly notice the weighty load you regularly carry. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21). You can feel free and simultaneously follow a schedule. In fact, if you didn’t schedule your free time, you’d either have far too much of it or none of it, both unfavorable and unliberated states. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19). You’re so attractive when you’re doing your thing, and the deeper you get into it, the more attractive you become. You wear your passions like a well-styled, custom look. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20Feb. 18). Sometimes, people who think they are offering you their support actually seem to make things more difficult than when you were doing it all on your own. Watch out for that dynamic today.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Admirably, you want to please others and ease their burdens. The best way to do this now is to please yourself. You may actually find it more difficult, as there will be some investigation involved in knowing your own preferences. COSMIC QUESTION: “Are you kidding me right now? Over the last two months, I have sent out job applications, answered ads, given friendly hints and nudges, pitched myself and plain asked for what I wanted at least 20 times to no avail. It’s like I can’t get a date, job, interest. . . NOTHING! I now know what it means when people say, ‘I can’t even get arrested,’ because I’m seriously pinching myself to see if I even exist. This has to be a heck of a cosmic climate for a Leo. When will it end?” You’re used to getting attention with a finger snap. Frankly, you often get attention just by doing things like walking by, looking someone in the eyes, gesturing their way. . . so this period of cosmic literal ignorance feels not just uncomfortable but maybe even devastating. And yet. . . Would you believe it’s how it is for a lot of people a lot of the time? Not everyone has your natural charismatic gifts for entertaining the world. Hopefully, this spell will help you appreciate how good you usually have it. Furthermore, having to work at getting attention and results is an opportunity to figure out what people want and how to tweak what you’re giving to match that.

lucky than good, but at the bridge table and in sporting arenas, the better one plays, the more favorable breaks seem to come one’s way. In today’s deal, North-South reach six spades. How should South play after West leads the diamond queen? Three spades was a game-invitational limit raise showing an eight-loser hand with four or more trumps. South, with a four-loser hand (remember that you deduct one loser for a known 10-card or better fit), bid what he thought he could make. Six spades is a fair contract, needing an opponent to have a singleton spade king or the defender with the doubleton spade king to have at most two clubs. If only dummy had held a third heart, there would have been fewer problems. After winning with the diamond ace, South cashed the spade ace, getting the good news (no 3-0 break) and the bad news (no singleton king). He took his two heart tricks, led a diamond to IT IS BEST TO dummy’s king, ruffed the last diamond, cashed the club ace and played a club to BE BOTH GOOD dummy’s king. The Weeknd leads Billboard Music Awards nominees Tribune Content Agency The Billboard Music Awards nominations hit a much higher note for The Weeknd than the Grammys did. The R&B superstar, who shockingly didn’t receive a single Grammy nod in 2021 despite having a prolific musical year, leads all nominees at next month’s Billboard ceremony as a finalist in 16 categories. His nominations, which were unveiled Thursday, include top artist, top male artist and top Hot 100 artist, while his album “After Hours” is up for top Billboard 200 album and top R&B album. The singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, vowed to boycott future Grammys following this year’s snub. “After
Hours” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart last year, while the song “Blinding Lights” reached the top spot on the singles chart. Other top nominees for the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, which take place May 23 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, include rapper DaBaby, who received the second-most nominations with 11, and Gabby Barrett, who led all female artists with nine. The Weeknd, meanwhile, is joined in the coveted top artist category by Drake, Taylor Swift, Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD. Other notable nominees at this month’s ceremony include Megan Thee Stallion, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish.

Bill opens door to CalPERS corruption
A
ssembly Bill 386 sailed through the Assembly Judiciary Committee last week on a unanimous vote with virtually no discussion about its provisions. The measure also received express treatment a few days earlier from the Assembly committee that deals with public employee matters. Given its cavalier handling, one might think that AB 386, carried by Assemblyman Jim Cooper, an Elk Grove Democrat, is just another minor change in law. In fact, however, it would allow the financially shaky California Public Employees’ Retirement System to semi-secretly lend out untold billions of dollars by exempting details from the state’s Public Records Act. Potentially it opens the door Dan Walters to insider dealing and corruption in an agency that’s already experienced too many scandals, including a huge one that sent CalPERS’ top administrator to prison for accepting bribes. CalPERS, which is sponsoring the bill with support from some unions and local governments, claims that the exemption is no big deal since the money it lends through “alternative investment vehicles” such as venture capital funds and hedge funds is already partially exempted from disclosure. However, there is a big difference. Using outside entities to invest means they have skin in the game. Direct lending by CalPERS means that its board members, administrators and other insiders would be making lending decisions on their own without outside scrutiny. CalPERS’ rationale is that using alternative investment partners is costly because of their fees, and that direct lending could potentially result in higher earnings. However, it says, disclosing loan details would discourage many would-be borrowers from seeking CalPERS loans, thus limiting potential gains. Underlying that rationale is that CalPERS’ $440 billion in assets are, by its own calculations, only about 71% of what’s needed to make pension payments that state and local governments have promised their workers. It has ratcheted up mandatory “contributions” from its client agencies to close the gap, but it’s also been chronically unable to meet its self-proclaimed investment earnings goal of 7% a year. During the fiscal year that ended last June 30, CalPERS saw a net return of 4.7%, blaming the shortfall on the economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic. “What started out as a health crisis turned into an economic crisis and severely affected investors everywhere, including CalPERS,” Yu (Ben) Meng, CalPERS chief investment officer, said at the time. One sub-par year would not be cause for alarm, but CalPERS officials have repeatedly said that meeting the 7% goal over time would be impossible without getting more aggressive in its investments. Meng was brought aboard to juice up investment strategy but shortly after reporting disappointing 2019-20 results was forced to resign because he failed to reveal his personal investments in a New York financial firm, Blackstone Group, with whom he had placed $1 billion in CalPERS funds. The Meng situation illustrates the perils should AB 386 become law and CalPERS officials be allowed to loan money to corporations and individuals without having to disclose all-important details. The potential pitfalls were pointed out in an extensive analysis of the bill by the Judiciary Committee staff. It mentioned the Meng case as well as the scandal that sent chief executive Fred Buenrostro to prison for taking bribes from Alfred Villalobos, a former CalPERS board member who became a “placement agent” for hedge funds. Villalobos committed suicide rather than face prosecution in the scandal. One might think that members of the two Assembly committees that rubber-stamped AB 386 would have at least discussed those scandals and the potential downside. But they couldn’t be bothered to do their jobs. CALmatters is a public interest journalism venture committed to explaining how California’s state Capitol works and why it matters. The U.S. Constitution, Article 1, statehood is 705,749 residents cannot Section 8, Clause 17 provides for a vote for the members to the U.S. national capital that would not be Representatives and Senate. If that is part of a state, or treated as a state, the true concern, the simple and
obvious solution is to retrocede the ceded part of D.C. back to Maryland by an act of Congress, leaving only the buildings and monuments in the District of Columbia. This would not require creating two more U.S. Senate positions but will probably give Maryland more U.S. House representatives. Although the only justification for the Washington, D.C. Admission Act is voter representation for Congress, note that the Capitol residents of the D.C. population will remain without voter representation. The Washington, D.C. Admission Act will require repealing the 23rd Amendment, which authorized D.C. residents to vote for president and vice president only and provided three Electoral College votes. This effort by Democrats, who control the House of Representatives, in passing this legislation without a constitutional amendment is unconstitutional and is an obvious effort to create two more U.S. senators for the Democratic Party. If the citizens of Washington, D.C. want to vote in congressional elections, have them support retroceding the part of D.C. that was ceded by Maryland, back to Maryland. Have they been polled for their choice? This is nonsense, We have been up and down this road for centuries. Correctly, all efforts have failed, as should this latest version. For years, policymakers spoke about the importance of small businesses to our economy but did not follow up with significant action. The pandemic – and the specter of small businesses failing en masse – has changed that dynamic. California policymakers have made real investments in our small businesses in the past year. Now, as we shift from crisis to recovery, small businesses need the state to build on that progress and keep investing in the health of our Main Street entrepreneurs and the organizations that support them. Small-business recovery is the foundation of our statewide recovery – and indeed, the recovery of the nation. The best way to get California’s economy back on track is to put our small businesses in a position to bring their employees back to work, create new jobs and bring vibrancy back to our neighborhoods. If continued investment is done right – placing an emphasis on helping women entrepreneurs and small-business owners of color – it can open new pathways to economic opportunity for communities that have historically been marginalized and are disproportionately affected by the current crisis. If California can get this right, our communities can not only recover; we can transform as a model system of resiliency that responds to the needs of these business owners. Got a good feeling about this: Library to toast ‘Star Wars’ Daily Republic Staff
DRNEWS@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET
FAIRFIELD — Solano County Library is celebrating the "Star Wars" mythos this week with a pair of programs geared toward fans of the books, films and other cultural derivatives. Tuesday is generally recognized among fans as May the 4th Be With You Day, a variation of a phrase that's popular in the books and films: "May the Force be with you." Children can grab a craft kit Tuesday at the Suisun City Library that will allow them to make a May the 4th Be With You bookmark. The kit will have everything that's needed to create a Chewbacca, Grogu (baby Yoda) or Princess
Leia bookmark. The kit is recommended for children ages 10 and older. Supplies are limited. Only one kit per person will be distributed. Next, Solano County Library will host a Zoom celebration this weekend with members of the Rebel Legion Endor Base. Group members will share "Star Wars" books for children and a presentation about their costume creations and activities. The program is designed for fans of all ages. The session is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Registration is required and is available on the library's events page at solanolibrary.com. Medics took some people away on gurneys, while others walked away alongside medics. The boat broke apart when it hit a reef near Cabrillo. Lifeguard initially thought only one person was on the vessel but when it hit the reef, dozens of people emerged from the damaged boat and jumped into the water as the boat broke apart, San Diego lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said at a press briefing.
L ifeguards on jet skis and rescue boats responded. “There were people in the water drowning, getting sucked out the rip current there, and there was people on shore,” he said. “We picked up about seven people in the water, two of them were faced down and drowned. . . . The numbers kept on increasing.” Lifeguards also made a cliff rescue, he said. Human and drug smugglers increasingly turned to the Pacific Ocean as the Trump administration tightened border infrastructure on land in recent years.

An article that started on the front page of Sunday’s print edition, about the Green Valley Fire Safe Council’s event Saturday, contained numerous errors. Michael and Dorene Warchut were evacuated from their home in 2017 to Rodriguez High School, not Solano Community College as originally reported. The event Saturday was scheduled to coincide with Wildfire Preparedness Day, whereas the original version of the article indicated the timing was more a coincidence. The Green Valley Fire Safe Council got its start in 2019; this summer will mark two years since the group started its planning. The original article indicated the genesis for the group was a recent occurrence. The group’s community wildfire risk assessment happened in March 2020, not in recent months as originally reported, and included support from the Cordelia Fire Protection District and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The new fire safety billboard cost less than $800. The $15,000 total noted in the original version of the article was conflated with a $15,000 grant the group received to host a community chipping program in December and January. The updated version provides specifics in the 15th paragraph about the activities of the organization and also clarifies a quote from Rochelle Sherlock in the 16th paragraph to make clear that their efforts focus on hazardous fire fuel reduction strategies. We regret the errors.

India: More than 40 countries send aid From Page One Uttar Pradesh state, the report cited authorities as saying. The Delhi High Court has warned that it will start punishing officials if life-saving supplies of oxygen and medical supplies don’t make it to hospitals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a meeting with experts and officials to tide over the oxygen and drugs crisis. Indian Railways has converted 4,000 railway carriages into “isolation coaches” with 64,000 beds. As many as 213 coaches had been handed to various states for Covid-19 care, it said. While the worst-affected cities and states like New Delhi and Mahrashtra are in prolonged lockdowns, states like Odisha and Haryana also announced new lockdowns to halt the spread of infections in rural areas. India’s Covid-19 task force has pushed hard for a nationwide lockdown to help subdue the second wave, the Indian Express daily reported. India opened a new round of its
vaccinations on Saturday, extending coverage for all those above 18 years old, but only a handful of states were able to deliver the jabs owing to a shortage of vaccines. Despite being among the world’s leading producer of vaccines, India, with a population of more than 1.3 billion, has run short and also placed a temporary hold on exports to meet the domestic demands. Meanwhile, international aid is arriving from the United States, Germany and 40 other countries that have promised support to India as its health care system is pushed to the brink and beyond. Medical equipment including hospital-level oxygen generators and anti-viral drug remdesivir arrived from France and Belgium on Sunday, India’s foreign ministry said. Britain announced that it wanted to send an additional 1,000 ventilators to India, following a first delivery of 200 ventilators, nearly 500 oxygen concentrators and three oxygen generators. But even as Britain continues to make strides with its mass vaccinations, British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab was hesitant about
sending vaccines to India, saying no such requests had been received. The British scientific community and opposition have called for vaccines to be sent to India or at least to give the country an outstanding shipment of several million vaccine doses produced in India. Epidemiologists have been calling on Western countries, where vaccinations are continuing apace, to share their vaccines to prevent the development of new coronavirus strains from surging infections. India, the worst-affected country worldwide after the United States, is in the grip of a second wave that began mid-February. The actual number of cases and deaths was likely to be higher than the numbers provided by authorities, with many people avoiding testing and many deaths going unregistered. Experts attribute the rapid spread of cases to more infectious variants of the virus and people’s failure to observe safety measures. The government has also been criticized for allowing millions of people to gather for religious festivals and state election rallies since March.
Cleanup: Next planned for September From Page One lectively removed around 650 pounds of trash. Other known groups include the Knights of Columbus Spanish Council No. 17037 from St. Vincent Ferrer Church, military personnel from the Travis Air Force Base Fitness Center, the Get Outdoors Club from Touro University California, Tully Consulting Group, the congregation at First Baptist Church in Fairfield, the Kampaign for Change group in Fairfield, the Vanden High School Interact Club, a group of students and their professor from Solano Community College, the Solano Land Trust and Girl Scouts Daisy Troop 33882. Data from CleanSwell show many residents worked individually or with families to collect trash as well, spanning more than 6 miles and collecting around 65 pounds
of trash in their own neighborhoods. Marianne Butler, countywide coordinator for the Earth Day cleanup, said in the press release that organizers still encourage those who did not report their results using the CleanSwell app to contact the Solano Resource Conservation District at education@ solanorcd.org or call 6781655, ext. 114, to report their cleanup activities. “The more data we have, the more we understand the impact local residents are having in their communities and for our waterways,” Butler said in the press release. Organized on-site Earth Day Cleanups, which typically occur on Earth Day, are not possible due to restrictions that remain in place to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19. Event organizers in Solano County and across the state pivoted this
year to loosely organized cleanup activities that targeted the week of Earth Day but also spread across the month of April. Organizers encouraged people to go out individually and in small groups – with proper safety protocols in place – to collect trash and report their activities on the Ocean Conservancy’s CleanSwell mobile app. The next major Solano County cleanup is Coastal Cleanup Day, which happens Sept. 18. Event organizers said they are optimistic that Coastal Cleanup Day will resume having in-person cleanups at designated sites throughout the county, but are waiting on official word from California Coastal Commission, which organizes the event at the state level. The Solano County Earth Day Cleanup is coordinated by the Solano Resource Conservation District on behalf
of the Solano County Department of Resource Management with funding from the CalRecycle Beverage Container City/ County Payment Program. Cleanups are coordinated at the local level by various partners that include the FairfieldSuisun Sewer District; the cities of Vacaville, Dixon and Benicia; the Downtown Vacaville Alliance; the Vallejo Flood and Wastewater District; the Vallejo Watershed Alliance; and Solano County Parks. Additional support comes from Solano County volunteers with the four-county Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership, which has its Solano County office in Fairfield and also serves Napa, Sonoma and Marin counties; and the Sierra Club Solano Group. Boeing fires 65 Heartache workers for hateful words or actions From Page A3
Bloomberg Boeing has fired 65 employees and disciplined another 53 for racist, discriminatory and hateful conduct since Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun vowed “zero tolerance” in June. The CEO is trying to make good on an antibigotry pledge he made last year after George Floyd’s murder by a police officer spurred protests across the U.S. Now, in a bid for greater transparency, Boeing is releasing a breakdown of its employees by gender, race and ethnicity – and the report shows that the company has a long way to go to attain its goal of a more diverse workforce. “As we have witnessed horrific images in the news and heard heartbreaking stories from our people, our determination to advance equity, diversity and inclusion has only become stronger,” Calhoun told employees Friday. Boeing is working to bolster inclusion as investors press U.S. companies to help address deep-seated racism and to be more transparent about their own hiring practices. McDonald’s is tying executive bonuses to targets for increasing underrepresented groups. Investor proposals for independent racial audits were backed by more than one-third of Johnson & Johnson and Citigroup Inc. shareholders at annual meetings this month. While Calhoun tries to reboot the company culture, Boeing is being sued for racial discrim-
ination. According to allegations in a recent case in federal court in South Carolina, a Black employee faced retaliation and a hostile work environment, as well as a supervisor who routinely assigned African-American workers to a building with undesirable and hazardous working conditions. Boeing denies the allegations. One of Calhoun’s first hires after taking the top job last year was Michael D’Ambrose as human resources chief, with a mandate to bolster diversity. According to Boeing’s demographic data released Friday, a company that has traditionally skewed White and male has a lot of work ahead to add more women and people of color to its ranks. Black employees make up just 6.4% of Boeing’s U.S. workforce and 4.4% of its engineers. Women account for 23% of employees and 17% of engineers. “We’re on par with the aerospace industry, and we don’t think that’s anywhere good enough,” D’Ambrose said in an interview. Boeing intends to release the snapshot of its 140,000-strong workforce annually to track its progress, along with another measure of its demographics contained on a form known as EEO-1 that corporations are required to disclose to the federal government. The company wants to increase its Black representation by 20% in the U.S. by 2025, which would still leave the total number at less than 8% of the company’s workforce.
particular moment from that evening: When Mary stood to walk into her kitchen, the baby immediately followed, crawling across the floor and gazing up at her. Mary reached for her phone to capture the image. “I thought, ‘I have to take a picture of this, so I remember,’ “ she says. “It made my heart sing.” In that moment, she says, it felt clear that a bond had begun to form. When Mary’s son and his family flew home to California the next day, she was already eager for the next visit, which she expected was only a couple of months away. Instead, she had to settle for a stream of texts and photos, meant to help Mary and her husband feel like they were still witness to the baby who was growing at dazzling speed. Their son and daughter-in-law recorded the child’s first steps and first words, which soon became full phrases, and the grandparents watched the videos again and again. Through Zoom and FaceTime, Mary made a point to be animated, using stuffed animals to try to hold her granddaughter’s attention. Her efforts seemed to be working: One day, as the toddler looked through one of her books, she pointed to an illustration of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor – whose short, dark hair resembles Mary’s – and announced: “Mimi!” “That made me feel like she was making some kind of connection,” Mary says. “It’s not the same, but it’s something.” Karin and Akiko also went to great lengths to maintain a sense of connection, especially as
Ronald’s health deteriorated and his memory began to falter. Every Monday, mother and daughter would create elaborately illustrated letters and fact sheets for Ronald, coloring pictures of plants and birds and historical figures. Karin kept a family blog updated with photos and videos of Akiko, and Naomi would scroll through them when she felt especially nostalgic, especially far away. Naomi texted photos of Ronald tending his garden and sitting by the pond in their yard. After her father died, Karin printed pictures of him – traveling with his wife when they were young, cradling his baby granddaughter – and Akiko hung them in her room. “When you’re 5 years old, you don’t really understand the process of death. I feel like the distance, the time that passed – I don’t think it’s hit her,” Karin says. “But she knows that she won’t see her grandfather again.” When Mary felt the ache of being far from her grandchild, she thought of what previous generations in her family endured. The daughter of Armenian immigrants, she never met her paternal grandmother, who lived in Iran when Mary was a young girl. “So we also have to put all that’s happening in perspective,” she says, “I kept thinking: ‘Okay, it might be 18 months that I don’t see my granddaughter, or even longer – but I will see her.’ ” And finally, she did. When Mary traveled to California in late March, after she was fully vaccinated, she was amazed by her granddaughter’s transformation: She was so much bigger, her hair
longer and lighter than Mary had remembered. She spoke in sentences, sat on a booster seat at the dinner table and ran around with the boundless energy of a child about to turn 2. “It’s Mimi!” Mary’s son told his daughter, as she regarded her grandmother in person for the first time in her memory. “Mimi!” the toddler repeated cheerfully. “There were pangs of sadness that we had not been able to see each other through all this time, that I haven’t been able to watch her grow in person,” Mary says, “but the overriding emotion was just the joy of being able to relish this week with her. And then the sadness of having to leave again. They’re so far away. But we’re already looking forward to the next trip.” Now that Mary’s husband is also fully vaccinated, she says, they’re planning to go back to California together in May. She is cautiously hopeful that they won’t have to endure such a long separation again. “I do worry about the variants, the surges – I’m not assuming the end of the pandemic is linear,” she says. “But I was just so happy that I could meet her without a mask.” The joy of a maskless reunion was also a welcome milestone for Vernon’s mother, he says. As soon as she was fully vaccinated, she told him that she was ready to host her grandchildren. When Vernon drove the kids to his mother’s house for President’s Day weekend, they bolted from the car and slammed the doors behind them. For three days, he says, they played on the neighborhood playground, ate too much candy, stayed up late. Their grandmother took them shopping, and let them pick out new toys. It was familiar, the usual
routine, he says, but to the kids, it was bliss. “It was like old times – they didn’t want to come home,” Vernon says. “Things are starting to feel really different from how it’s been, finally, and I’m really happy about that.” Spring bloomed in earnest during Naomi’s visit to Virginia, the neighborhood bursting with magnolias and cherry trees and redbuds, and she says she has found solace in both the company of her grandchild and the arrival of a new season. “For someone who has lost a spouse of 54 years – it’s very difficult to put into words,” she says. “My husband was an avid gardener, and he really believed in the restorative power of nature. In Buddhism, the cherry blossom represents a life, and as it falls, that symbolizes the acceptance of a lifespan. So when I walk with Akiko and we just see the beauty around us, it’s very healing. You just realize that life does go on.” Sometimes, Naomi shares memories of her late husband with Akiko – “I’ll ask her, ‘Do you remember?’ ” she says, “and she does.” But they are together for only two weeks, and Naomi is more focused on the present. “I haven’t talked that much about Grandpa, because I’m just trying to make this connection with her now,” Naomi says. “I’m really just trying to get to know my granddaughter again.” So they curl up on the couch side by side and read stories. They set up their watercolor paints and create postcards they will send to each other when they are apart again, after Naomi returns to California. They walk together in the mornings, admiring the trees already turning from blush to green, the sidewalks strewn with fallen petals.

Giants hang on to first in NL West Tribune Content Agency The Padres and Dodgers dominated offseason headlines and played the most compelling head-to-head matchups between any clubs in April, but in the early days of May, the Giants are still in first place in the National League West. It’s far too early to talk about the standings, but with a 7-1 win on Sunday in San Diego, the Giants are now 3-3 against the
Padres this season and have proven they aren’t overmatched against one of the deepest rosters in the majors. “I think there’s a mutual respect for the talent,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “I certainly think their team is incredibly talented, I think they’re a well-coached team and a well-prepared team and I think the respect is returned and I appreciate that.” After dropping the
first two games of a threegame set at Petco Park, the Giants improved to 17-11 behind a strong performance from starter Kevin Gausman and an offense that finally broke out with help from an early three-run home run hit by newcomer Mike Tauchman. With Mike Yastrzemski (left oblique soreness) and Donovan Solano (moderate right calf strain) on the 10-day injured list, the Giants were without
two of their best hitters this weekend, but Tauchman provided power in Yastrzemski’s place while infielder Tommy La Stella had a pair of hits including a RBI triple starting at second base, where Solano usually shares time with him. The Giants felt La Stella was on the verge of breaking out of an extended slump, but he exited Sunday’s game in the fifth inning with an apparent left leg injury after scoring
on a RBI groundout from Wilmer Flores. A Giants offense that failed to score more than three runs in any of their first five games at Petco Park this season put three runs on the scoreboard with one swing in the third inning on Sunday. Tauchman hadn’t homered since the 2019 season, but after being robbed of extra bases with a long flyball to right center field in the first inning by Jurickson Profar, Tauchman hit a
2-2 cutter to a part of the ballpark where Profar couldn’t reach it to give the Giants a 3-1 lead. “When you watch him take batting practice you see the thunder,” Kapler said of Tauchman. “You see him get the ball in the air to the pull side. It’s not Alex Dickerson where balls are no-doubters all over the field, but he has plenty of power, he showed the power in See Giants, Page B8

The United Trinity statue is seen as fans protest Manchester United’s Glazer ownership outside the stadium prior to the Premier League match between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford in

Manchester United-Liverpool soccer match called off as protesters flood field Tribune Content Agency A protest against the Glazer family, who owns several sports franchises in the U.S and the United Kingdom, led to the postponement of Sunday’s Manchester United-Liverpool match at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester, England, after a group of fans stormed the field. The Glazers, who also own the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have
owned Manchester United outright since 2005 after slowly buying small percentages of the team over a few years. The protest stemmed from years of fan dissatisfaction with the Glazers. Several years of poor play and performance on the field was compounded when the Glazers were one of several English teams to join the quickly abandoned European Super League. The protest began
around 8 a.m. local time outside the team’s hotel. However, after about an hour, nearly 1,000 people marched toward the stadium, breaking down fences and storming the field. Video and photo taken at the scene showed fans pouring through the stands onto the field, chanting and waving banners. Many of the supporters were carrying aluminum cans and passing plastic bottles back and forth. The game was even-
tually postponed and no makeup date has been announced. The pitch invasion was the culmination of weeks of fan resentment. The European Super League fiasco has been especially bad for Manchester United with fans protesting outside the team’s training facility and organizing a letter campaign that has so far led to the team’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward announcing he plans to resign.
Five reasons Sharks’ season derailed Curtis Pashelka MERCURY NEWS
S
AN JOSE – The Sharks were not predicted to be a playoff team this season. They weren’t supposed to be able to compete in a realigned division that was tougher than the one they were in the previous year when they finished last among eight teams. Also, how could they overcome playing their first 12 games of a 56-game season on the road? But on the morning of April 10, the Sharks, with an 18-17-4 record and 17 games to go, were basically in control of their own destiny. They were three points behind the Arizona Coyotes for fourth place in the West Division with two games in hand, and two points back of the St. Louis Blues with one game in hand. They were riding high, having won five of six games. Then, in a two-week stretch, it all slipped away. After their 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on April 9, the
ANALYSIS Sharks wouldn’t be victorious again until April 26 when they beat the Coyotes 6-4. They went 0-7-1 from April 10 to April 24, their longest losing streak in 15 years. Before the Sharks played their first game with Arizona last week, they were six points out of a playoff spot with nine games left to play. It was over. “We thought that a lot of those games, most of those games,” Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro said of the eight-game losing streak earlier this week, “were on us and our preparation and our compete level.” Monday, the Sharks (20-26-5) could mathematically be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to the Colorado Avalanche in regulation time and a St. Louis victory when the Blues play the Anaheim Ducks. But regardless of whether it becomes official Monday or not, the Sharks inevitably will miss the
postseason in consecutive seasons for just the third time in their 30-year history. Here are five reasons why it fell apart for the Sharks over a 14-day stretch last month.
Scoring dries up From the start of the season until April 9, a handful of Sharks players were having solid, if unspectacular, offensive seasons. Evander Kane led the way with 35 points in 39 games, a 0.90 points-per-game average, followed by Tomas Hertl (0.76) and Logan Couture (0.67). Brent Burns, Kevin Labanc, and Timo Meier all averaged 0.62 points per game. But during the eight-game skid, Hertl was the only Sharks’ player to average more than half a point per game, as he had two goals and three assists in that time. Meier had four points in eight games. But Nikolai Knyzhov had just as many points, two, as Burns and Erik Karlsson. See Sharks, Page B8
OAKLAND, Calif. — Jesús Luzardo was placed on the 10-day IL with a left pinky fracture, the A’s announced on Sunday. Luzardo allowed six runs, three earned, in a rough threeinning outing on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. Luzardo hurt his hand before his Saturday start, manager Bob Melvin said. The 23-year-old hit his hand on the table while playing video games. He threw before his start, and trainers deemed him OK to pitch. But an X-Ray after the game revealed the hairline fracture on the pinky finger of his throwing hand. “He came in, was a little sore, training staff checked him out,” Melvin said. “We threw him in the cage before he went out there. Watched him warm up. He was comfortable pitching. The training staff
was comfortable with him pitching and there was a hairline in the pinky finger.” There is no set timetable for Luzardo’s return, Melvin said. The pinky injury didn’t impact his throwing, he noted, and he won’t be putting on any cast or splint to expedite healing. There is a way to keep his arm in shape because the fracture is on the far side of his throwing hand. “It depends on how it responds,” Melvin said. “As you can expect, it was a little worse and puffy today, but no idea on a timetable yet.” Off to an inconsistent start, the A’s prized pitcher left-handed has a 5.79 ERA in six starts this season. His command was off in his start on Saturday. Lefthanded reliever Adam Kolarek was recalled from the alternate site as the corresponding move. With Mike Fiers’ See Hurler, Page B8
Golden State, Pelicans ready for double dip Tribune Content Agency Damian Lillard has tortured the New Orleans Pelicans this season. In three games against them, the Portland Trail Blazers star guard has scored 43, 50 and 36 points. In the teams’ most recent matchup on March 18, Lillard had 21 points in the first quarter, an outburst that gave the Trail Blazers the cushion they needed to complete a regular-season sweep. The Trail Blazers and Pelicans won’t meet again this season unless it is in the Western Conference play-in tournament. So why is their recent history relevant as the Pelicans head down the home stretch? Well, three times in its final eight regular-season games, New Orleans must face the only NBA player who’s more lethal at pull-up 3s than Lillard. On Monday and Tuesday, the Pelicans host the Golden State Warriors and MVP candidate Stephen Curry in a back-to-back at Smoothie King Center.
On May 14, they face each other for a third time in the Bay Area. The Pelicans (29-35) trail the Warriors (32-32) by three games. To have any realistic shot at making up that ground, the Pelicans will likely have to win at least two of their games against the Warriors, if not all three. “We’re going into Monday with a mustwin mentality,” guard Lonzo Ball said. “We’re not really focusing on Tuesday. We have to take it one game at a time. We have to put all our focus on that first game Monday.” In a five-day span from Tuesday to Saturday, the Warriors allowed a 28-0 run in a loss and went on a 24-0 run in a win. They might not be as erratic as the Pelicans, but they are close. Even so, beating them multiple times over the next two weeks will not be easy because the Warriors’ best player can hurt the Pelicans where they’re vulnerable: Defending the 3-point arc.

Masa treats in time for Cinco de Mayo celebrations
Chalupas and sopas, made of chorizo with potato, tofu and chicken with avocado.
JeanMarie Brownson The Daily Meal
W
hen traveling in Mexico or dining out closer to home, I seek out antojitos – those little whims of street snacks and appetizers. My favorites include flavor-packed, handheld chalupas and sopes made from corn masa dough that has been transformed into crispy, crusty golden containers. They are perfect for Cinco de Mayo, but equally delicious any day of the year. After a year of pandemic yeast dough and quick bread projects, it’s a pleasure to work with corn masa dough – it’s super simple and forgiving. This flavorful, gluten-free dough is used in the Mexican kitchen for everything from corn tortillas to quesadillas, tamales, dumplings and – of course – shallow rounds for sopes and chalupas that resemble small canoes. If you live near a tortilleria, by all means purchase freshly made masa dough for the snacks. Most of us will have access to powdered corn masa in a Mexican market or large grocery store. It’s super simple to reconstitute the powdered masa with hot water for tortillas. For the recipes below, a bit of oil, salt and baking powder yields a tender result. Once you have your corn masa dough ready, it’s time to make your fillings, though the number of fillings will depend on your available time and the number of guests you’re serving. I have three suggestions to get you started. The first – begin with firm tofu, which stands in for a less rich, albeit not very authentic, protein for picadillo; ground turkey or pork are other options. Potato, poblano and chorizo is another Pueblan-inspired filling, while shredded chicken with chipotle and avocado brings me back to Oaxaca. Serve the sopes or chalupas with a generous spoonful of slightly warmed salsa or Mexican hot sauce. A sprinkle of fresh cilantro or sliced scallions brightens everything with color and flavor. If you don’t want to make your own corn masa dough, you can always make the fill-
ings and serve them tucked into hot tortillas for a fabulous taco party. If you go this route, know that corn tortillas need to be hot to be pliable enough to bend without falling apart. Brush a tortilla with some oil and lay the oiled side down on a hot griddle. Repeat with a second tortilla. After about one minute, when the tortillas are hot, sandwich them (oiled side in) together. Place about 1/3 cup of your hot filling in the center; fold and serve immediately. Whether you make chalupas, sopes or tacos, any of these recipes would be a perfect way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. While May 5 marks the victory over France in the battle of Puebla, it’s not widely celebrated in Mexico. However, in the United States, the date inspires Mexican food and drink festivities. And it’s a great time to dip into our Mexican recipe repertoire. CRISPY CHALUPAS (OR SOPES) WITH VARIOUS TOPPINGS Total time: 45 minutes Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Makes 20 to 24 Notes: The corn masa shapes can be cooked up to 2 days in advance and stored at room temperature in a closed container. Place on a baking sheet and put into a heated 350degree oven to reheat and re-crisp before filling, about 10 minutes. You need 3 to 4 cups filling for the number of masa shapes here. Make or assemble your fillings up to several days in advance, cover and refrigerate. Reheat or bring to room temperature while you prepare the corn masa containers. 2 cups (10 ounces) powdered masa harina, such as Maseca, OR 1 pound fresh masa dough for tortillas 2 tablespoons sunflower, safflower or expeller pressed canola oil 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking powder Sunflower, safflower or expeller pressed canola oil for shallow frying Chopped fresh cilantro, for serving Salsa, warmed for serving Mix masa harina and 1 1⁄3 cups very hot water in a medium-size bowl with a spoon until a dough forms. (Alternatively, put fresh masa dough in the bowl without the water.) Add 2 tablespoons oil, salt and baking powder. Use clean
hands to work ingredients into dough, then gather dough into a smooth ball. Dribble in teaspoons of water as needed to make a soft dough that isn’t crumbly. Divide the dough in half, then divide each half into 10 to 12 equal portions (each about 1 ounce) and roll each into a ball. Cover the balls with a damp towel. For chalupas, put one dough ball onto a piece of parchment paper. Use clean hands to shape the dough ball into a football about 2 ½ inches long. Use your fingertips to press a slight indentation in the center of the football to form a shallow canoe shape about 2-inches long with thick sides. Place it back under the damp towel while you shape all the balls. (Always keep the dough covered with a moist towel to prevent drying.) Alternatively, for sopes, flatten the ball into a 2 ½ inch diameter round disk. Use your fingertips to pinch up an edge, about ½ inch in height, to form a shallow cup. Line a baking sheet with a paper towel. Turn on the exhaust fan. Pour oil into a large nonstick skillet to a depth of ¼-inch. Heat over medium until hot but not smoking. Check the oil temperature by dipping an edge of a corn masa shape into the oil; it should sizzle. Add several corn masa shapes (canoes or cups) to the pan without crowding them. Fry until bottoms are beautifully golden, about 2 minutes. Carefully flip to fry the edge of the shapes to golden, about 1 minute. Flip again so they are flat side down and spoon a little of the oil in and around the shapes’ edges. Cook 1 to 2 more minutes to crisp. Carefully remove to prepared baking sheet. Repeat to fry all the shapes. Top each hot, crispy chalupa or sope with 1 to 2 tablespoons of the warmed filling of your choice. Choices include caramelized onion and tofu picadillo (see recipe below), (potato, poblano and chorizo (see recipe below) or shredded chicken with chipotle and avocado (see recipe below). Other easy options include sauteed mushrooms and onion, guacamole, refried black beans and shredded cheese Sprinkle with cilantro. Spoon on salsa as desired. Eat out of hand with plenty of napkins or place on a plate, garnish with a salad and use a fork to enjoy. CARAMELIZED ONION AND TOFU PICADILLO Total time: 25 minutes Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes
Makes about 4 ½ cups Note: You can swap out the tofu with 1 pound ground turkey or pork, browned in a skillet until cooked. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 small (6 ounce) sweet onion, chopped ½ medium-size red bell pepper, seeded and chopped 2 or 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste 1/3 cup sliced pitted manzanilla or kalamata olives, or a combination 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon smoked sweet paprika ½ teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon each: dried oregano ¼ teaspoon thyme Pinch of sugar Pinch of cinnamon Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes 1 pound very firm tofu, well-drained In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat heat 2 tablespoons oil. Add 1 chopped onion; cook and stir until well-browned, about 6 minutes. Stir in ½ chopped bell pepper and 2 to 3 cloves minced garlic; cook 1 minute. Stir in 6 ounces tomato paste, 1⁄3 cup sliced olives, 1 tablespoon cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, ½ teaspoon cumin, ¼ teaspoon oregano, ¼ teaspoon thyme and a pinch each of sugar, cinnamon and crushed red pepper. Stir in 2 or 3 tablespoons water to loosen the mixture. Remove from heat and cool. (Mixture can be made up to 2 days in advance and stored, covered, in the refrigerator.) Reheat onion mixture if necessary in the skillet. Crumble in the tofu and cook, stirring so the tofu is fully mixed in, until piping hot, about 2 minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings. Use to fill chalupas, sopes or in warm tortillas for a taco filling. POTATO, POBLANO AND CHORIZO Total time: 30 minutes Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Makes about 3 cups 1 medium russet potato, about 8 ounces 6 to 8 ounces uncooked Mexican pork chorizo, removed from casing ½ small white onion, chopped 1 poblano pepper, cored, seeded and cut into ½-inch pieces 1 or 2 cloves garlic, crushed
½ teaspoon dried oregano, preferably Mexican Salt to taste ½ to ¾ cup (4 ounces) crumbled queso fresco or farmers cheese 2 to 4 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro Scrub potato clean and pierce in several spots with the tip of a knife. Microwave on high (100% power) until fork-tender, about 5 minutes. Cool, then cut into small dice (skin is fine). Meanwhile, put 6 to 8 ounces crumbled chorizo and ½ small chopped onion into a large nonstick skillet. Set over medium heat and cook, stirring and breaking up the chorizo with a wooden spoon, 5 minutes. Add poblano pepper, 1 to 2 cloves crushed garlic and ½ teaspoon oregano; cook and stir until chorizo browns, 5 more minutes. Stir in diced potato. Taste and adjust seasonings, adding salt as needed. Stir in 4 ounces crumbled cheese and 2 to 4 tablespoons chopped cilantro. Use warm or at room temperature to top chalupas or sopes or to fill warm tortillas for tacos. SHREDDED CHICKEN WITH CHIPOTLE AND AVOCADO Total time: 15 minutes Prep time: 12 minutes Cook time: 3 minutes Makes about 3 cups Notes: Grilled or poached chicken thighs, shredded after cooking, taste great here and stay moist when reheated. Rotisserie chicken is also an option. 3 cups shredded cooked chicken ½ of a 14-ounce can diced fire-roasted tomatoes with can juices 2 tablespoons ketchup 2 green onions, thinly sliced 2 to 3 teaspoons pureed chipotle in adobo ½ teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 1 small avocado, pitted and chopped In a medium, microwave-safe bowl, mix together 3 cups shredded chicken, ½ can fire-roasted tomatoes, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 2 sliced green onions and 2 to 3 teaspoons chipotle. Microwave on high (100% power) until warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in ½ teaspoon salt, 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro and avocado. Use warm or at room temperature to fill chalupas, sopes or warm tortillas for tacos.

There are about 102,000 public electric vehicle charging outlets across about 42,000 charging stations nationwide today, according to the Department of Energy, with a

Biden wants to build 500K charging stations
Where we stand and how we get there Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has proposed spending at least $15 billion to begin rolling out electric vehicle charging stations, with the goal of reaching 500,000 charging stations nationwide by 2030. There are about 102,000 public charging outlets across about 42,000 charging stations nationwide today, according to the Department of Energy, with a third concentrated in California (in comparison, Michigan is home to just 1.5% of the nation’s public charging outlets at 1,542 charging outlets.) Experts say significantly expanding the charging network would require coordination across the auto industry, retail businesses, utility companies and all levels of government – and $35 billion to $45 billion more, potentially through required matches from local governments or private companies. They also say a long-term approach is appropriate, as the roll-out of chargers should match consumer adoption to moderate demand and allow time to expand the electric grid, and caution against proprietary chargers like those used by Tesla Inc. But if a widescale charger roll-out is pulled off, they say, it would likely bring the industry to scale by reducing or eliminating “range anxiety” – consumers’ fears that they won’t be able to take a road trip or visit out-of-town relatives in an electric vehicle – which remains one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption. Most electric vehicle owners today have chargers in their house or apartment complex, said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities: “In order for EVs to be more pervasive, it’s going to have to be gas station-like, where you can find an EV charging station with significant capacity” almost anywhere. “The green tidal wave,” he added, “doesn’t happen in the U.S. until we have the charging stations to support it.”
Where we stand Today, the charging network in the U.S. is an amalgam of public and private entities seeking to prepare for more EVs
on the roads. The largest charging network is owned by ChargePoint, the first global charging company to be publicly traded. It’s followed by other such private companies as Blink, Electrify America, EVgo, Greenlots and SemaConnect. Most of these charging companies use a universal plug approved by the Society of Automotive Engineers and have adapters available for Tesla-brand EVs. Tesla operates the secondlargest charging network after ChargePoint, but it uses proprietary chargers that can only be used by Teslas. As other automakers work to take a larger bite out of the U.S. EV market, most are not following in Tesla’s footsteps by going it alone: General Motors Co. is partnering with EVgo; Ford Motor Co. is working with Greenlots and Electrify America; and Stellantis NV is also partnering with Electrify America. In Europe, where a standard connector is mandated, Tesla doesn’t have an exclusive network. There’s no standard connector mandated in the U.S. currently, but Sam Abuelsamid, principal research analyst at Guidehouse Insights, thinks that should change to help EV adoption. Electric vehicle startup Rivian Automotive LLC plans to build a charging network that would be exclusive to its customers. “That actually makes the access problem worse,” Abuelsamid said. “As the number of EVs grow, suddenly we’ve got thousands of chargers that could be used, but the company won’t let people use them, and that’s bad. If you really want people to adopt EVs, you need to make every charger accessible to every EV owner.”
Steady growth The Biden administration has frequently likened the president’s infrastructure proposal and the EV initiatives within it to the roll out of the interstate highway system in the 1950s in scope and potential influence, which cost about $1.1 trillion in today’s dollars ($114 billion at the time). The gas stations that dot the
interstates and reach out into some of the most remote areas of the country didn’t come all at once – they tracked with demand for cars and trucks as it rose over the 20th century, experts say. “But when you talk about supercharging stations, there’s increased complexity,” said Ives, referring to the DC fast chargers that would be necessary to come close to the quick-stop experience of pulling over for gas on a road trip (though that speed isn’t yet possible with existing technology.) Charging infrastructure needs to be slightly ahead of demand to ensure the electric grid can be prepared to handle increased use, but not so far ahead that they go unused. “What we’re trying to do is pace the market, not flood the market because EVs ... they’re growing very fast, we’re seeing 20% year-over-year growth in our territory, but they’re still only about one out of every 100 vehicles right now,” said Jeff Myrom, director of Consumers Energy’s electric vehicle programs. “There’s really not a good reason to flood the market.” Consumers is offering $70,000 in rebates for the installation of DC fast chargers and hopes to continue to do so through 2024. Utility companies offering charger rebate programs get a return by increasing their rates over time. “We really view this as beneficial to all of our customers if we’re doing this in a way that we’re integrating the load efficiently with the grid, so we can shift the charging to off-peak times or we can install charging where there’s excess capacity on the system,” said Kelsey Peterson, a manager of DTE Energy Co.’s EV strategy and programs. DTE, too, is providing rebates of up to $55,000 per charger depending on output.
More than $15 billion However, investment from utilities, auto companies and private charging companies won’t be enough without some government help, said charging specialists in each industry – both to support the market expansion and to ensure it happens quickly and equitably, as the administration has said it hopes to do.
It’s also crucial in order to be competitive with China, experts say, which has dramatically outpaced both the U.S. and Europe in publicly accessible chargers. But Republicans in Congress aren’t happy with Biden’s infrastructure and jobs proposal, arguing it constitutes a Democratic “wish list” of climate-related policies that don’t count as infrastructure, including the electric vehicle priorities. They’ve also raised concerns that spending so much more on the heels of the $1.9 trillion Covid-relief package passed earlier this year could cause the economy to overheat due to increased inflation. Experts who spoke with The Detroit News noted the $15 billion set aside in the proposed infrastructure package isn’t nearly enough to meet the president’s goal on its own. Ives of Wedbush Securities said his group estimates it will cost around $60 billion to bring the U.S. up to 500,000 charging stations by 2030, so the Biden infrastructure plan would cover only about 25% of the cost. An analysis by industry consultant AlixPartners also estimated $50 billion would be needed in the U.S. alone to expand charging to adequately accommodate EV growth within the decade. The group estimates Level 2 chargers (which typically charge slowly over hours while the owner is at work or at home) cost about $4,000 to install and DC fast chargers (which can charge an EV to 80% in less than an hour) cost between $50,000 and $110,000 to install. Once installed, maintaining the chargers costs also costs thousands of dollars. “This $15 billion is not the cap on the funding that’s going to contribute to deploying 500,00 chargers, it’s a floor. It’s public capital that’s going to be leveraging private match that will then enable us to do that,” said Anne Smart, vice president of public policy for ChargePoint. Multiple pieces of legislation that have already been introduced in Congress and could be pulled into Biden’s package provide funding for charging infrastructure but require a private match for those who receive grants.
“That’s the exact model that’s been underway for a decade,” Smart said. ChargePoint works with customers to determine how much they can spend while identifying local and state incentives and utility programs that can help complete the sale. “When we’re looking at these federal programs, we want to make sure that we’re considering how do we leverage this funding to the greatest extent possible?” she said. “Ensuring that where private capital is available, we’re using that to continue to accelerate the market, and these public funds are going to help move us all there more quickly, but it isn’t 100% of the cost.”
Political football Negotiations over the bill package are in the earliest stages in Washington, and funding for chargers could be reduced as the administration negotiates with Republicans and moderate Democrats to advance it. Senate Republicans have proposed an infrastructure package more narrowly tailored to traditional infrastructure that would cost $568 billion over five years, while progressive Democrats are pushing for hundreds of billions more for priorities like affordable housing and immigration reform. Some Republicans are hesitant to throw federal funding behind electrification, reflecting a preference to let EVs sink or swim in the free market. Some also argue electric vehicles aren’t totally zero-emissions because fossil fuels are still the largest electricity source in the country. But if what automakers with their multi-billion dollar EV plans and charging companies are saying about the EV ecosystem is true, said Brett Smith, technology director at the Center for Automotive Research, “the technology should be in a pretty market-ready state, where it isn’t any longer a political discussion. It’s about consumer acceptance.” “So maybe this is the last goaround for this being a political football,” Smith added. “Maybe by (the next presidential cycle), you have a technology where it’s no longer us versus them because it’s shown that it actually works.”

7 best works from the next great female director you should know

W
e shouldn’t assume too much but the fact that two women made Oscar’s best director field for the first time ever in 2021 suggests that Hollywood is realizing that the low number of female directors in the biz (still just 20%) is ridiculous. So, now that Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell are in the club, who’s next? My money is on Sarah Polley. Actually, my money has been on Polley for a while. The 42-year-old Canadian should have been Oscar-nominated way back in 2006 for “Away From Her,” a beautiful drama in which she guided Julie Christie to a best actress nomination. Although Polley’s screenplay was nominated, the Oscar nod for directing didn’t happen, just as it never happened for such trailblazers as Alice Guy-Blache (whose career peak preceded the Oscars), Dorothy Arzner (a gay pioneer who started directing in the silent era), Ida Lupino (who carved out the actor/ director path for Polley back in the 1940s) and Lina Wertmuller (the first female directing nominee, for “Seven Beauties” in 1977). Polley’s directing career is short but impressive. Her three films demonstrate an intense interest in the lives of women, the complications of public and private selves, the impermanence of relationships and the strength required to keep a family together. All of those will come in handy in “Women Talking,” a movie Polley is about to begin shooting. Like “Away From Her,” based on a story by Alice Munro, “Women Talking” adapts the writing of one Canada’s leading literary lights. It is inspired by a toughminded novel by Miriam Toews that’s right in the wheelhouse of Polley and her star/producer Frances McDormand. And there’s even better news: Polley, who hasn’t acted in a feature in a decade, will showcase that talent in “Women Talking,” too. Since her debut at age 4, Polley has racked up dozens of appearances. So, if you’re not familiar with her work (her taste is offbeat so she hasn’t been in a lot of hits), there’s much to discover. Her face, especially her large eyes, suggests delicacy. But she’s often cast against that notion, going all the way back to “Road to Avonlea,” her Canadian TV series about a poor little rich girl. She’s also utterly believable as an action hero in “Dawn of the Dead” and in one of her most recent roles as a Dr. Frankenstein-like scientist in the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror movie “Splice.” Polley’s intelligence and

“Away From Her” (2006) This heart-tugging stunner is so much more than a movie about Alzheimer’s. “Everything is going,” says the character played by Julie Christie, who reluctantly agrees with her husband that a memory-care facility is where she needs to be. That difficult decision is the catalyst for a movie that insists on the vitality of Christie’s character – who, as her memory of her marriage fades, begins a new relationship that baffles her loved ones, especially her husband.
“Dawn of the Dead” (2004) Exhibit A in the you-do-notwant-to-mess-with-Polley argument is this remake of the George Romero classic. Zack Snyder’s movie is vigorous, funny and suspenseful. Polley – as a suburban woman who literally wakes up one day to discover her neighborhood is overrun with the undead – is a resourceful survivor.
“The Sweet Hereafter” (1997) This is the place to start with Polley’s career. Atom Egoyan’s stirring movie reconfigures the Russell Banks novel on which it’s based, with a tricky structure that skips around in time and into the heads of various small-town characters whose lives have been derailed by a school bus crash. Polley plays a babysitter who, despite her shy demeanor, becomes the town’s moral compass. (If being a writer/ director/actor isn’t enough, she also demonstrates she’s a fine singer.)
“Stories We Tell” (2012) If we know any stories, surely we know our own? Maybe not, as Polley finds out
in a documentary about her family, which has some enormous secrets. Interviews with her siblings and others combine with re-created scenes, diary excerpts and film clips that reveal her parents, both of whom were actors, did their best acting offstage.
“The Claim” (2000) When I think of filmmakers I wish more people knew about, I immediately go to Michael Winterbottom. And when I think about Winterbottom’s movies I wish more people knew about, I go to this adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s “The Mayor of Casterbridge.” Winterbottom shifts the setting from England to Northern California just after the Gold Rush, where hasty decisions have disastrous consequences for a family. Polley, Milla Jovovich, Peter Mullan and Wes Bentley star.
“Take This Waltz” (2011)

Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams star in Polley’s tale of a woman who, despite being happily married, finds herself drifting into an affair. Williams’ adulterous character is the protagonist but, like everyone else in “Waltz,” she makes the kind of big mistakes from which it is hard to recover. Sarah Silverman is terrific in the supporting role of Williams’ friend and Polley beautifully captures the domestic rhythms of the Toronto neighborhood where she shot it.
“Go” (1999) Like “Dazed and Confused” or “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” it’s one of those early looks at a bunch of actors who would go on to stardom, including Katie Holmes, Timothy Olyphant, Taye Diggs, Melissa McCarthy and Jane Krakowski. It’s sort of a teenage “Pulp Fiction,” a fresh, speedy look at the fallout from a drug deal gone wrong, viewed from varied perspectives.

by Phillip Alder draw them. South is in four spades. West cashes three club tricks, then exits with a diamond to dummy’s king. How should declarer handle his trumps? North’s first two bids strongly suggested that he did not have a club stopper. Since South didn’t either, he jumped to four spades. Lead the ace from ace-king at trick one, and the king from ace-king after trick one. From ace-king-queen at trick one, decide between the ace and queen. The latter’s advantage is that when you lead an ace, partner knows you cannot have the queen. Here, after the queen lead, East signals high-low to show an even number. Since declarer has no more side-suit losers, he should draw trumps as quickly as possible. With eight spades missing the queen, he should finesse. However, should he finesse now or cash the ace first? If the missing spades are 3-2, South will be all right if East has the queen. But if West has a singleton spade, cashing the ace works when it is the queen and loses when it is a low card. Since West is four times more likely to have a low spade than the queen, South should finesse immediately. When the finesse wins, he reenters the dummy with a heart, finesses again, draws trumps and claims. COPYRIGHT: 2021, UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE

Birds bring their ‘love story’ back to beach Tribune Content Agency CHICAGO — Chicago’s preeminent plovers are together again, settling in for their third summer of saving their species at Montrose Beach along the Lake Michigan coast. Monty and Rose, the endangered Great Lakes piping plovers who became the first pair to nest successfully in Chicago in decades, collectively traveled more than 2,000 miles to make it back to Chicago just one day apart. Shortly before sunset Monday, as the edge of Lake Michigan reflected an amber sky, one of the plovers touched down along the shore by the dunes habitat and proceeded to dash past cracked shells and a watermelon White Claw can, pausing here and there to plunge its beak into the sand or sound a piercing cheep. The bird flew over to the pier and, in a blink, was gone again. Rose was first seen Sunday morning at the beach, and as word of the return spread, birders arrived with big cameras and growing excitement. Many were alerted by Mark Kolasa, who was out birding at Montrose, like most days, when he secondguessed what he saw. “I was just walking along the beach, not really expecting to see a plover because it’s maybe a little bit early yet,” Kolasa said. “She was so much smaller than I remembered.” The scramble began to confirm the bird based off its unique leg bands. “There was a lot of excitement, a lot of back and forth,” Kolasa said. “Get someone out there with a scope, now!” Rose flew around, dodging some gulls, Kolasa said. But his favorite part was when she started calling out. “I was imagining she was like, ‘Where are you, Monty?’” On Monday afternoon, another plover arrived at the beach that appeared to be Monty. By Tuesday morning, Monty’s banding combination was confirmed. Monty and Rose darted around their old haunts at Montrose, at times in the protected area and at others right in the

In 2019, they became the first pair to nest successfully in Chicago in decades. middle of open beach, withstanding wind that sent sand flying and masks askew. Patricia O’Donnell, a monitor for the plovers for the last two years, was out at the beach again Monday after visiting Rose on Sunday. “I personally really enjoy watching the birds because it takes me outside myself,” O’Donnell said. On Monday, she learned both of the birds were back. “It’s a comeback story because they went way down in population and then they came back. It’s a great story of conservation,” O’Donnell said. “But I got to tell you – it’s a love story.” O’Donnell has questioned the anthropomorphizing of the wild animals. But, she said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a Pixar film at some point. “Another year, another breeding season,” O’Donnell added. “What drama will unfold? There’s always drama around them.” Last summer, the birds arrived about a week later, on the cusp of May. Experienced males tend to show up first, but as evidenced by Monty and Rose, that’s not always the case.
“We know that if they’re hustling, they can get there in a couple days,” said Francie Cuthbert, a leader of the plover recovery effort and a professor in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology at the University of Minnesota. “Each time the pair shows up it’s a miracle.” Rose’s arrival coincided with a “burst” of plover activity over the weekend, Cuthbert said. About 30% of last year’s adult Great Lakes plovers have returned, most to Michigan. The last season’s young tend to be slower. “This is their first return trip, so you can assume they may be making some wrong turns along the way, so to speak,” Cuthbert said. Monty and Rose first met on a Waukegan beach when they were only a few months old. They attempted to nest in Waukegan in 2018, without success, but in 2019, they ended up fledging two chicks on Montrose. Last summer, they fledged three: Nish, Hazel and Esperanza. In the last two years, Monty and Rose’s followers have found inspiration in their small-but-
mightiness. Deflated birders missed spending their days watching the plovers last summer but hoped an empty beach might mean a more peaceful stay. Drama from the first Montrose summer – a failed clutch of eggs, July Fourth fireworks, a species-saving effort pitted against an EDM music festival on the beach – largely disappeared last year. The birds were on their own, the challenges more natural: a more than 400foot journey through the dunes to secure safer ground for the chicks, eating enough from the “primordial soup” in a flooded area of the beach to ensure a successful migration. Monty and Rose were sighted this winter in Texas and Florida, respectively. The chicks survived the journey south but have not yet been confirmed as making it back north to summer grounds. “For all three of those chicks to show up would be pretty exceptional,” Cuthbert said. “But that’s what’s going to be really interesting – if any of the Chicago chicks from last year do return, survive, where will they go? Where will they end up? Will
they return and be in the general Chicago area or will they show up in Michigan?” This summer, people will be back on the beach. But lake levels are lowering, offering more habitat along the coast. “We’re getting reports from a number of places about really great habitat that’s been exposed,” Cuthbert said. The number of wild fledglings was down last year, but Jillian Farkas, the Great Lakes piping plover recovery coordinator with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said more available habitat is reason for hope. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Farkas said. “As much as I would love to see a constant increase, just exponentially, that would be fantastic, but that’s not how nature always works. We’re expecting the ups and downs, but we’re slowly but surely increasing. So I’m very optimistic about this year, and we’ll all come together to address challenges.” Earlier this month, the Chicago Park District signed off on a habitat expansion for the birds, adding about 3 acres to the existing natural area at Montrose, where stewards have worked for years to foster biodiversity. Plovers continue to face threats from habitat loss, humans and severe storms. And botulism outbreaks remain a threat, especially in warming water. So another successful mating season for Monty and Rose could mean a lot for Great Lakes plovers, once down to about a dozen nesting pairs. “Think about how many people don’t get to witness this bird,” Farkas said. “And I know it’s not a flashy, beautiful indigo bunting shorebird. But it’s pretty unique.” Last season, 64 pairs of piping plovers nested along the Great Lakes, a slight drop from the previous year. By the end of May, a clearer picture of this season’s nesting pairs should emerge. On average, plovers can live about five or six years, Cuthbert said. But some live longer – the record is 16 years. With any luck, Monty and Rose’s Chicago story will be more than a trilogy.

San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove watches a threerun home run by San Francisco Giants’ Mike Tauchman
in the 3rd inning at Petco Park in San Diego, Sunday. The Giants acquired Tauchman from the Yankees, Saturday.
Giants: Tauchman homers in his debut From Page B1 ‘19 and through watching video, he showed the power in spring training.” Gausman, who gave up a first inning home run to Fernando Tatis Jr., scored more runs than he allowed Sunday as the Giants righthander was involved in each of the team’s rallies. In the third inning against Padres righty Joe Musgrove, Gausman laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance catcher Curt Casali to second and
reached base after Musgrove bobbled the ball. The righty then scored on Tauchman’s home run into the right field bleachers before he was able to help himself out once more. In the fifth inning, Gausman led off against Musgrove with a single down the left field line for his third hit in 66 career at-bats before he raced all the way around the bases to score on La Stella’s triple. The Giants extended Gausman a one-year,
$18.9 million qualifying offer last offseason with the belief his best days as a starter were still ahead of him and the 30-year-old right-hander has given the club’s top decision-makers every indication they were correct. In six starts this year, Gausman has completed at least six innings in each outing and struck out 40 hitters while posting a 2.04 ERA. He’s the only Giants starter who hasn’t had the chance to pad his
numbers against a lowly Rockies team, either, as Gausman has missed Colorado twice already while facing San Diego in each of the Giants’ first two series against the Padres. After logging a combined 13 innings and allowing just two earned runs against the Padres in two starts this year, Gausman’s next outing is also slated to take place against San Diego when the Giants host the NL West foe at Oracle Park next weekend.
Sharks: Jones’ rough patch dooms team From Page B1 Joel Kellman also had two points, just as many as Kane. Couture and Labanc both had one point. That’s not the way it’s supposed to work. When the players who get paid to produce didn’t produce, the Sharks’ lack of scoring depth was exposed. Rudolfs Balcers and Ryan Donato each had two points in the skid, with Dylan Gambrell and Patrick Marleau each adding one. Also, the power play was atrocious, going 1-for-21, including 0-for-16 over the final seven games of the losing streak. Job No. 1 for the Sharks’ front office in the summer is to find a way to upgrade the team’s forward depth. Otherwise, the Sharks will be going down the same path next season.
Jones cools off Jones on April 5 was named the NHL’s second star of the week after he went 4-0-0 with a 1.71 goals-against average, .942 save percentage, and one shutout. But the good times wouldn’t last. On April 10, against the Los Angeles Kings, Jones, starting on back-to-back nights after the Sharks traded Devan Dubnyk to Colorado earlier in the day, allowed four goals on
19 shots and was pulled in favor of rookie Josef Korenar. Jones hasn’t won since. Starting with that April 10 game, Jones, with some shaky puck management and leaky defensive structure around him, has gone 0-5-1 with a .861 save percentage, second-worst in the NHL for all goalies who played at least four games in that time.
California dream ends The Sharks went into their April 10 game with Los Angeles with a combined record of 10-2-1 against the Kings and Ducks. After their game with seventh-place L.A., the Sharks would play the eighth-place Ducks in an ensuing two-game series at home – a golden opportunity to put points in the bank before their schedule got tougher. But it was a disaster. The Sharks never held a lead throughout the three games. Instead of rebounding from a 4-2 loss to the Kings on April 10, the Sharks fell behind the Ducks by three goals in both games. Goalie Anthony Stolarz stopped 73 of 74 shots in the two-game series, which Anaheim swept with 4-0 and 4-1 wins. Stolarz is 0-2-0 since with an .867 save percentage. Also, defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic, whose improved play in recent weeks has earned

Despite being swept by the Ducks, the Sharks were still just four points back of fourth place on the morning of April 16 when they began a road trip with two games each against Minnesota and Vegas. The Sharks held leads in all four games, including a 2-0 advantage over the Golden Knights in the second period on April 19 when Marleau passed Gordie Howe to become the NHL’s all-time leader in games played. But the Sharks managed just one point in that game as they lost in a shootout, and were blanked in the three other games. “The difference is very small, so when there’s little things that are off, the execution’s not there, sometimes it looks a lot worse than the difference between teams are,” Burns said April 17 after a 5-2 loss to Minnesota. “Our team, we have to play an extremely detailed, hard-working game every game to be in them and win those games and if it’s a little bit off, it’s
St. Louis gets hot Remarkably, on the morning of April 24, the Sharks were still just four points back of the fourthplace Coyotes and three back of the fifth-place Blues. But St. Louis, which had two games in hand on the Sharks, was about to get hot. Thought to have a difficult schedule coming home, the Blues beat the Colorado Avalanche twice on April 24 and 26 and followed that up with a 2-0-1 record in three games against the Wild to basically lock up the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division. The Sharks’ 6-3 loss to Minnesota on April 24 left them six points out of a playoff spot, a gap too big to overcome considering the shortcomings of their roster. On the morning of April 26, before his team’s game against Arizona, Boughner announced the team was going to use their remaining games to give younger players opportunities to evaluate what needs they have going into offseason. “There’s going to be some games here where there are probably going to be some young guys getting in,” Boughner said, “and that’s the position we put ourselves in.”

Hurler: Gets X-Ray From Page B1 return from his back injury this week, the A’s will return to a five-man rotation along with Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, Chris Bassitt and Cole Irvin. They’ll stay in turn. Earlier, the A’s also placed reliever J.B. Wendelken on the injured list with an oblique injury. Wendelken injured his oblique on his last pitch of his Saturday outing that resulted in a pop up that catcher Aramís Garcia caught at the net. It was initially not ruled an out,
but overturned when the A’s challenged. “Thank goodness that was overturned and he didn’t have to throw another pitch to check it out,” Melvin said. “Once he came in afterwards, it was deemed an oblique strain.” We nd el ke n’s 15 appearances currently lead the American League and has a 4.38 ERA with 14 strikeouts and five walks. The A’s recalled right-handed reliever Jordan Weems from the alternate site as the corresponding move.
