FAIRFIELD — More menthol cigarettes are sold in Solano than any other county in the state, the result – officials said – of a targeted marketing strategy toward communities of color and youth. “Solano County – one of the most diverse counties in the country – has become a leading target of the tobacco
industry,” Kirbee Brooks, the county Tobacco Prevention Project coordinator, said in a statement released Thursday by the county administration. “Big Tobacco aggressively promotes menthol cigarettes, particularly among communities of color and the young. Mentholated tobacco products are typically aimed at people of color and our youth because menthol temporarily masks the harshness of
tobacco smoke, making it easier for new users to get hooked,” he said in the statement. His comments follow the release of the third Healthy Stores for a Healthy Community survey, which is taken every three years. The survey shows more than 96% of retailers stock mentholated products, compared to 88% statewide and See Tobacco, Page A9

More than half of Solano’s adult population has been vaccinated thansen@dailyrepublic.net
FAIRFIELD — More than 51% of Solano County’s adult population – 16 or older – has received at least one vaccination shot, the Public Health Division reported Thursday. In raw numbers, 176,000 individuals have received a shot – about 51.5% of the adult population – of whom 113,000 are fully vaccinated, Dr. Bela Matyas, the county public health officer, said in a phone interview. Matyas said the county will continue to hold mass vaccination clinics at the fairgrounds in Vallejo, but noted that neighboring counties are starting to see fewer people show up for their events. Part of the explanation, he said, is the counties are targeting the part of the population that
are less inclined to get the vaccinations, something Solano County hopes to avoid as case numbers continue to keep the county mired in the morerestrictive red tier. Matyas called it “unfortunate” that the county is not closer to graduating into the orange tier. Solano County had 40 new cases Thursday, well above the 27-case daily average threshold that needs to be met over a 14-day period to get into orange. Vacaville’s 20 new cases represented half of those confirmed cases. Matyas said the tracing evidence clearly shows the cause of the case numbers is younger residents hanging out in social gatherings. The total number of cases rose to 32,126, the

SUISUN VALLEY — There are some changes coming to the American Armory Museum. Guests at Saturday’s Military Vehicle Demonstration Day and Car Show will get a look at new and future exhibits. Under construction is what will become a tunnel where guests will enter and view items, including an Arabic policeman’s vest and a scene from the 2109 death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. A new room is being built to look like Iraq, said Geoff Lippman, the museum’s general manager. Visitors will then travel back into earlier wars such as Vietnam and World War II, where they can view Gen. George C. Patton’s jeep. The museum opened in
